Meet Father Christmas and his reindeer at Bacton Wood and Holt Country Park

Father Christmas will bring seasonal joy to local children (not to mention quite a few adults!) when he and his reindeer visit Bacton Wood near North Walsham on Saturday 14 December and Holt Country Park on Sunday 15 December.

As well as the chance to meet Father Christmas, children and their accompanying adults will have an opportunity to follow a Christmas trail through the woods to learn about animals and their winter hibernation habits, collect items to make a wildlife treat, and make a Christmas spectacle! At the end of the trail reindeer from Melsop Park Farm will be waiting for their Christmas snack, and of course there’ll be presents for all the children.

Father Christmas and his reindeer will visit Bacton Wood on Saturday 14 December, and Holt Country Park on Sunday 15 December, 10.30am – 12.45pm on each day (last entry to the trail 12.15pm). £3 per child, adults free (all children to be accompanied by an adult, please), no booking required – and everyone is advised to wear appropriate footwear and to wrap up warm! Dogs on leads welcome. Hot drinks will be available and note there is a small parking charge at Holt Country Park.

Further details are available from North Norfolk District Council Event Ranger on 07920 576634 or visit www.northnorfolk.org/community.

North Norfolk District Council approves former HL Foods site development

An application to redevelop the former HL Foods site and adjacent land in North Walsham has been approved by North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Development Committee.

The site has been a long standing eyesore since closure of the factory and demolition of the buildings some years ago.

The approval will lead to the construction of 176 family homes, the provision of public open spaces and land for employment development. Commitment has also been given to providing a 50 space car park for North Walsham railway station and road connections to allow development of further homes.

The approval gives the opportunity to bring the brownfield site back into positive use and represents a vote of confidence in North Walsham. It will also provide much needed footfall for the town centre and support the North Walsham economy. Additionally, it will secure the £2.3m investment loan from the Greater Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership making future site development possible.

NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I am delighted by this decision which represents another major investment in the town. When faced with a site that has stood derelict for many years and that looked set to remain so for many more to come, I am pleased that the committee supported the positive move to invest in the town. For too long North Walsham has been blighted by a lack of action and we are determined to deliver change for a better future.”

Council calls for guarantee on ‘crucial’ Coasthopper service

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has called for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the Coasthopper bus service that links isolated towns across the district throughout the year.

In a motion approved at a meeting of NNDC Full Council last month councillors agreed to urge the County Council not to cut the service, and that if there were any proposals for changes to the service there should be full and meaningful consultations with residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk before any changes could be implemented.

The Coasthopper bus service, currently run by Norfolk Green, carried 545,523 passengers in 2012, with an estimated increase to over 570,000 this year. Norfolk Green has said that any cuts in County Council funding over the next two years would force them to reduce the level of service, most especially in the winter.

Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Leader, said “The Coasthopper bus service plays a crucial role in the district, providing essential links between our coastal and neighbouring inland communities.

“It is a vital component of the North Norfolk economy, making it possible for people to travel outside their towns and villages throughout the year. We are very concerned by the County Council’s proposals to drastically reduce the funding of this core service. Any cuts will potentially lead to further rural isolation for many people across the district and threaten to make life more difficult for our tourism and business communities.”

The full wording of the motion as passed is: “North Norfolk District Council calls for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the service and to consult fully with the residents and stakeholders in North Norfolk on the details of any potential changes when these are known.”

Cub Scouts are young people aged between 8 and 10 1/2, who make up the second section of the Scouting family, between Beavers and Scouts.

Cub packs are themed on "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling, a friend of Baden-Powell. Cub packs are divided into Sixes, with each six being identified by a coloured triangular patch on the member's arm. Each Six is led by a 'Sixer' and a 'Seconder', who have their rank indicated by horizontal yellow stripes sewn onto their left arm JOINING - Under some circumstances, Cub Scouts can join the Pack as young as 7 1/2 if, for example, they have friends joining at the same time, or are mature enough to move on early from Beavers, (and there is space in the Pack). Such decisions are taken by Cub and Beaver Scout leaders. ACTIVITIES - During their time in the Pack, Cub Scouts will get a chance to try lots of different activities like swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting. There are a range of badges available which Cub Scouts can wear on their uniforms to show everyone how well they're doing. Cub Scouts also get to go on trips and days out, to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm. Sometimes they will be able to go camping with the rest of the Pack and take part in all kinds of outdoor activities. WEDNESDAY CUBS - 6.30PM – 8PM, FRIDAY CUBS - 6.30PM - 8PM For more information, contact membership@northwalshamscouts.org.uk

Two Norfolk Youth Groups Walk Ten Miles for Charity

Two youth groups from Norwich and Stalham showed solidarity and determination on 23 November, walking ten miles along the Weaver’s Way to raise money for charities, Beat and Macmillan. A total of 13 young people turned out on a chilly Saturday November morning, to start the sponsored walk from Stalham Sports Centre, along with four Youth Workers from MAP - the young person’s charity based at Chapelfield, Norwich. Young people from the Norwich MAP Active group joined forces with the Stalham Youth Hub, and enjoyed a fantastic day out. Although the weather was chilly, the sun was shining for our sponsored walkers. The group had a great opportunity to explore the old windmills, villages and nature reserve along the ten mile stretch, finishing up at Potter Heigham. Senior Youth Worker, Will Mills, commented how impressed he was with the groups “not only did every young person complete the whole ten miles, but everyone pitched in and helped each other out whether it was keeping spirits high with bad jokes, or sharing snacks. A great example of the energy and commitment young people can contribute” The total amount raised has yet to be confirmed.

What’s next?

Six years ago Norfolk Cleaning was founded by Peter and Diane Murther, offering a domestic cleaning service to the local community.

This soon changed and what developed was, The Norfolk Cleaning Group. This is made up of; Norfolk Cleaning, Norfolk Laundry Services, Norfolk Holiday Home Management and now The Norfolk Cleaning Centre.

Peter and Diane started Norfolk Cleaning when they were unable to find a professional cleaning company to look after their own office and home in North Walsham. Peter has been in management for almost all of his working life, with many years running his own company. The Group has grown phenomenally year upon year. What started as a small operation has turned into something on a much larger scale with a wide range of services being offered

throughout Norfolk, including; Complete Holiday Home Management Package, Washing and Ironing, Dry Cleaning, End Of Tenancy Cleaning, Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning and the job everyone hates… Oven Cleaning.

Norfolk Cleaning first started in a small unit on Douglas Bader Close, North Walsham but shortly after was forced to move to much larger premises at 2A Stanford Tuck Road. With the significant expansion of the laundry, 2A just wasn’t big enough and they have now taken over the unit next door. With half of this unit being used for laundry, there was still half of the unit left to form The Norfolk Cleaning Centre.

Do you have sight problems? Are you no longer able to enjoy reading?

Why not come along and discover a world of enjoyment and interest through our Audio Book Group at Aylsham library on Tuesday 17 December from 10.30 am until 12 noon. Please contact Aylsham library on 01263 732320 or Mark and Simon on 01603 629558 or marksmith@nnab.org.uk

What funny weather we have had since last Christmas. Winter continued well into a long, cold Spring. The plants and birds were confused with things so late, They must wonder what the next year will bring. A long, hot, sizzling Summer produced berries, fruit and nuts galore, And with all that glorious sun who could ask for more? Autumn was pushed back, affecting the plants and trees, Which were so much later in shedding their leaves.

The Norfolk Cleaning Centre launches in December selling Janitorial and Cleaning Supplies that have been tried and tested by their cleaners on a daily basis. These will be available for sale both on-line and throughout their retail outlet. They really believe their products work, and not only that it’s next day delivery. Who knows what’s next…?!

The jolly team look forward to helping you soon!

Aylsham Library has PCs with free internet access, email and office software. We also offer an online reference library on a range of subjects including family history where you can search the ancestry website free of charge for library members, current affairs, arts and business.

We can also offer online courses for complete beginners. For more information please contact Aylsham Library on 01263 732320.

Aylsham Library will be closing at 12.30 pm on Christmas Eve and will re open at 9.30am on Friday 27 December.

Suddenly Winter’s here now, with all the cold weather we fear, But first let’s enjoy … A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Derek Philpott

It’s Christmas

Today we’ll dress our Christmas tree With little gifts and fairy lights, It will be a sight to see When all lit up on Christmas night. Children’s faces will glow with joy, When they each receive a special toy, We will watch the Queen on our TV, Then sit down to a scrumptious tea. It’s snowing now, I hope it will lay, And be white for Christmas Day

NORTH WALSHAM PLAYERS VARIETY GALA NIGHT I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came and supported the North Walsham Players 'Variety Gala Night' which took place at North Walsham Community Centre on Friday 15 November.

The Players pulled out all the stops, to make it yet another successful show. The show featured several song and dance routines from Joseph, Whistle down the Wind and Matilda. There were also comedy sketches and new member local singer Neville Rowe who sung throughout the show and also had his own solo spot. The cast consisted of 16 people who varied in age, some of them had never been on stage before, and a technical crew of three. After all the expenses were paid for, we were able to kick start our years fund raising with £100 which will go to East Coast Truckers at the end of the year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the cast, also the backstage crew, technical crew and front of house for their help and support, as without them it would not have been possible to put on the show.

Lastly I would like to say a special thank you to Carl Bird Ltd, Andrea's Photography, Emmajins Cupcakes & The Three Cottages for their help and support.

The next show to be performed by the North Walsham Players at North Walsham Community Centre will be a pantomime in February watch this space for more details.

Have you ever wanted to appear in a pantomime? Well here’s your chance!

We are looking for new members aged eight and upwards for various parts in our next show. If you are interested in joining please telephone Colin on (01692) 402116 or e-mail jeabol@aol.com

With the festive season rapidly approaching, the children of St. Nicholas House School in North Walsham have been taking the opportunity to think those who are less fortunate than themselves. Many (52 to be precise!) have been filling shoeboxes with carefully chosen items for the annual Operation Christmas Child campaign, sending gifts to those children overseas who may otherwise receive nothing.

On Friday 15 November the children in Form Five organised their own Bring and Buy Sale to raise money for their chosen charity, the World Wildlife Fund. The children did a fantastic job of setting up and running the stalls, donating toys and books, organizing games, baking cakes and even clearing up afterwards! Their hard work paid off and the sale raised a fantastic £127.45!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

With Christmas fast approaching it is time to reflect on the past year and to mention some of the cats that we have looked after.

With nearly 300 cats being cared for by the branch this year and over 210 having been found new homes, our fosterers have been kept very busy. Two cats which came into care as strays were reunited with their owners because they had been chipped, five cats were returned to their owners and sadly we lost six cats because they had serious health problems. Much to our delight several of our long term residents have been re-homed as have all of the older cats, apart from one. Max, the oldest cat still in care is, however, not available for re-homing as he is a “golden oldie” cared for by Pauline, one of our fosterers, and at nearly 19 years old is very happy to retain his position as a Cats’ Protection cat but also continues to enjoy his freedom and home comforts.

With so many cats, our vet bills have been considerable as all cats have a

“vet check”, are vaccinated, micro chipped and in some instances blood tested for FIV/FELV. With several cats also needing operations, X rays, etc, our fosterers are familiar faces at the vets. For example, Caramel, a dear little kitten, who required cage rest after damaging one of her legs, and Mickey and Jim two of the older cats who needed dentals.

Fortunately, fundraising has gone quite well despite raising less money at two of our major events. As well as car boot sales, street collections, bingo and table top sales we have also been selling some of our goods on line and these sales are proving very successful. Our final fund raising events for this year, a table top sale and a Quiz night, will have taken place by the time you read this. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved during the year, helping cats in their own special way.

We are delighted to have opened the doors to our brand new practice on 4th December at 8.30 am. Come along and have a look at our new facilities. We have 5 individual consulting rooms, separate cat and dog waiting areas our shop ‘Miramar Pets’ is incorporated in the spacious waiting area. Our custom built Reception Desk enables our reception staff to help with your enquiries in an efficient, professional manner. The Consulting Rooms are equipped with their own computers which link with each other and our Cromer Surgery so no matter where you are seen your pet’s records will always be available to the Vet. Our new ‘Prep’ (preparation) room has more space with a nurses station centrally located to enable constant monitoring of our separate cat and dog wards, as well as the isolation unit. The Theatre has its own piped gas supply and is equipped to a very high standard. There is plenty of Office Space for our administrative team and a comfy staff room for us to relax in at coffee time. In the Shop we are stocking well-known brands such as James Wellbeloved, Arden Grange and Royal Canin. As well we have a good selection of toys, leads, collars and other pet supplies and necessary accesories. If you can’t find what you want just ask and we will do our best to get it for you!

With Christmas now only a few days away we need to remember the cats in our care and make sure that everything is safe for them. Securing the Christmas Tree (in case your kitten decides to climb it), making sure the decorations are shatterproof and the cat does not eat anything it should not (eg tinsel, chocolate) will ensure that everyone has a very Happy Christmas and large emergency vet bills will be avoided.

We wish all our cat loving friends a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

All the colour of Snow White

The cast of this year’s pantomime have arrived at Sheringham Little Theatre in a blaze of colour.

As costumes are fitted and rehearsals for Snow White begin, familiar faces are being welcomed back and new performers being introduced to the coastal venue.

Muddles and Russel Hicken as Nanny Knotty Knickers.

Russel said “This is my fourth year playing the pantomime dame at Sheringham so it feels like coming home for Christmas!

This year’s festive production begins on Friday, December 13 and runs until Saturday, January 4.

back in Sheringham for the second time,” she admitted. “I am looking forward to getting stuck into the role of Snow White and really making it my own.”

Wicked stepmother Loraine has not appeared in panto at Sheringham before but is a regular in the Summer Rep. “I can’t wait to get started. I have played the evil character in other pantomimes and I just love it. All that booing and hissing is just wonderful!” she said.

Written by West End star Killian Donnelly, who is currently starring in The Commitments, and has appeared in blockbuster film Les Miserables alongside Russell Crowe, it looks set to be a lively production.

Simon said Snow White promised as much singing, dancing and great family fun as last year’s Christmas show.

Pantomime director Simon Thompson said Killian’s version of Jack and the Beanstalk was so successful last year that the theatre was keen to work with him again.

“Killian really understands pantomime – the tradition, the use of dialogue and what people are looking for in terms of pace,” he said. “His writing appeals to young people because it is contemporary but at the same time it has the right balance for adults too.”

The production stars Rachel Waring, as Snow White, Loraine Metcalf, as the Wicked Queen, Kyle Fraser as Prince Charming, Rik Warren as

“It looks like the show is going to be a lot of fun. It is a great script, which had me laughing out loud from the very first moment I read it.” Rachel is also returning the venue for the festive season. Last year she played Jill in Jack and the Beanstalk.

The record surge tides that hit Britain and in particular the coast of Norfolk & Suffolk severely damaged Cromer Pier. With one of the best ever Christmas Shows only just opened less than a week before, the damage to the pier and the Pavilion Theatre has forced the show’s cancellation at least for a few days. The worst ever surge tide damaged a number of businesses small and large right around the coast as well as requiring the evacuation of substantial numbers of homeowners from the worst-hit areas. 48

It is to be hoped that the damage, which included many decking planks being ripped from the pier, can be fixed quickly so that the Christmas Show can continue, hopefully even before you read this story. CHRISTMAS LUNCH

Christmas now seems looming towards us so we would like to remind you about this year’s Churches Together Christmas Lunch.

This will be held on Christmas Day in the Community Centre followed by tea and cake and listening to the Queen’s speech. This event is financed by gifts from local organizations for which we are extremely grateful. It’s not too late to book your place.

This lunch is not entirely for old people, it is for any person who is on their own on Christmas Day living within North Walsham.

We are not convinced that we are reaching everyone who qualifies so if you are within this criteria or know of any one who is please write to Mr. & Mrs. R Vincent at ‘Wisiwig Too’, 14 Marshgate, North Walsham. NR28 9EE or email roger.vincent@hotmail.co.uk

The Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham

The last charity lunch to be held by the Inner Wheel and Rotary Clubs of North Walsham was held at the Community Centre on Monday 28 October. This was our 30th year and the 60th meal. Notwithstanding the inclement weather conditions and approximately 133 meals were consumed.

Unfortunately age has wearied us and all good things must come to an end and we shall miss the camaraderie of preparing the food but not the inevitable crop of problems that confront our organisers! We have to thank Rotarian David Pardon and Inner Wheel member Daphne Skipper for their wonderful original idea, when they were both Club Presidents in 1983. Daphne has not missed one lunch and her energy and enthusiasm has kept us all going. Another stalwart in the team has been Denis Payne, whose music is well-known to many. He has entertained us on his keyboard during nearly every event. Our thanks to go the three of them with a token gift to show our appreciation.

Approximately £60,000 has been raised for charity over the years. A big “thank you” goes to all of you who have attended those functions and given generously in the raffles.

Our November meeting has held on the 11th at Witton Village Hall. The speaker was Hilary Livermore, who gave a most interesting talk about patchwork and quilting. She brought with her some beautify examples of bedspreads and cushions which she had made. It was a popular hobby and prompted many questions.

The evening ended with chat and refreshments. Stella Hunter - Club Correspondent

Norfolk MPs and Lib Dem councillors condemn council proposal to cut funding for student transport in Norfolk

Norfolk Members of Parliament have expressed their concern at the proposed changes to post 16 school transport. In a letter to the Leader of Norfolk County Council, George Nobbs, all nine Norfolk MPs urged the Leader of NCC to look at other ways to achieve savings rather than increasing the cost of transport passes. Norfolk County Council is currently conducting a consultation into the proposed changes. The consultation closed on 12 December 2013.

Police keep up pressure on rave organisers

Police have vowed to keep up the pressure on organisers of illegal raves after officers prevented an event in Thorpe St Andrew last month. Twelve people were arrested and sound equipment seized after officers were alerted to suspicious activity at Pinebanks on Saturday 16 November. More than 50 people arrived at the site shortly afterwards becoming hostile towards police. Residents, businesses and landowners are urged to be vigilant and to call police immediately if they witness similar activity. Chief Superintendent Nick Davison, County Policing Commander, said "The action taken falls in line with our zero-tolerance approach to these events and its important people understand the reasons for this action. "These events are illegal, happen in

uncontrolled environments and therefore pose a risk to the safety of people attending. This was evidenced at two events disrupted in the summer where a young woman was airlifted to hospital after collapsing through taking a cocktail of drugs at a rave near Thetford while a man suffered head injuries after falling from a speaker rig onto farm machinery at a rave near North Walsham. The consequences are potentially fatal and as the police we cannot be seen to standby and not make any intervention. "These events, sometimes referred to as ‘free parties’, also impact on the wider community – people often drive to and from raves and with large numbers this can cause significant disruption in local communities. This is without the serious anti-social

Surprise, Surprise Barry

It really was ‘surprise surprise’ for viewers of the popular television programme earlier this month when none other than North Walsham’s very own Barry Holden was second on Holly Willoughby’s ‘hit list’! Barry, renowned for his much-loved ‘North Walsham Live Aid’ concerts held at the Community Centre every summer was nominated by his granddaughter Daisy, and unbeknown to him his wife and daughter were also ‘in on’ the surprise. But the surprises didn’t end when Holly confronted him with the infamous words ‘Surprise Surprise’. Barry’s daughter Kerry explained that the one star Barry had not been able to make contact with, despite his best efforts, was Rod Stewart. He had

behaviour, noise nuisance, criminal damage and environmental impact...someone has to clean up after the event. "We will continue to work pro-actively to disrupt events and take positive and appropriate action where necessary.” Advice to residents/landowners Any sightings of vans, lorries or large numbers of vehicles Sightings of fliers advertising raves Broken padlocks on access gates, to areas where a rave may take place Suspicious activity around derelict buildings/warehouses.

been to see him in concert and tried to ‘blagg his way backstage’ but unsuccessfully so his evening of surprises was complete when Rod Stewart took to the stage to publicly sign a guitar which will be auctioned at the next Live Aid event, together with a signed and framed album and the ultimate promise that when Barry was organising his next function, if he let him know he would come along as the Guest of Honour! He then sang a song for Barry from the album which he had dedicated to his father who helped him in the early days of his career. We all heard you Rod, so no letting us down, North Walsham looks forward to welcoming you! As for Barry, what more can we add except to say North Walsham salutes you!

Competition North Walsham & District

Bob White at Showcase Gallery has been busy tracking down interesting books about Norfolk. He really wanted to find the original book by Neil R Storey titled "North Walsham & District, released in 1995 as part of the Britain in Old Photographs series.

The book is a nostalgic look back at North Walsham and surrounding villages and contains over 200 photographs. In addition many local characters are remembered, with many anecdotes.

And he is delighted to say that he has not only found it, he has commissioned a reprint, exclusive to Showcase.

And even better, one of the North Walsham Times readers will be the lucky recipient of a free copy. All you have to do is send in the answer to this question.... "Name one other book written by Neil R Storey."

Send your answer to Showcase Gallery, or drop it into the Gallery at 40a Market Place, North Walsham NR28 9BT. Make sure it arrives by 31st December 2013. Mark your entry North Walsham Competition.

One lucky entry will be drawn out of the hat at random by Bob and the winner will be announced in the NW Times in the first issue of the New Year. Rules - open to all over 16, one entry per household, no cash alternative.

A lovely Christmas present, priced at just £13.99.

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is currently presenting a debut exhibition entitled ‘Mixed Media Exhibition’ featuring a collection of observational and creative works by young local artist Charlotte Rowlands. The exhibition runs until 27 January 2014.

Self-taught 24 year old North Norfolk Artist Charlotte Rowlands, from Roughton, near Cromer, has achieved an inspiring portfolio of mixed media from original portraits and wildlife to stained glass 3D work. She has been encouraged and creatively nurtured by her artist mother Karen Rowlands, who formally exhibited at NNDC last year.

Charlotte said “I love the challenge in drawing portraits of observing and capturing the subtle details that make each individual person unique. The simplicity of colour and rawness of pencil I feel brings an honesty to the portraits. When drawing animals I like to use pastel and charcoal to achieve the quality of light, fluffiness in the fur. Making stained glass presents a very different challenge to drawing. An image needs to be captured in a few simple lines, then developed by the choice of colours and textures of glass.”

The exhibition will provide original and great value seasonal gifts ranging from £8 to £180, with the additional offer of commissions for drawings and stained glass.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am – 5pm; Wednesday 10am – 5pm; Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.

Dear Margaret,

Once again the Christmas mail will increase so I am making another appeal for stamps for charity.

For those of you who have donated stamps throughout the year, many thanks.

Stamps may still be handed in at the Lottery counter in Sainsburys in North Walsham and also at the mobile library for those outside the area. Any large amounts I will collect – please phone me on 01692 405002. Yours sincerely, Arthur Gribben North Walsham

Dear Margaret,

I help to run a self-sufficient group of people who meet every Tuesday at Stalham Youth Club, Recreation Road, Stalham. It is primarily for people who have been mentally ill but anyone is welcome to join.

We find it difficult to attract new members. We have advertised in the surgeries and written to MIND in Norwich and Yarmouth. The group is very casual and the main function is to provide somewhere for people to go who may otherwise be a bit lonely. Tea and coffee are provided and one of the members cooks us a two course lunch. There is no charge on your first visit but after that we pay £4 each to cover the food and drink and the rent of the premises. We meet from 11am until 2pm.

Occasionally we go out for a change and sometimes we have a quiz. There are five pool tables which are free to use.

I’m afraid that only limited help with transport is available. We have Chris in Trimingham, Gary in Catfield and myself in North Walsham who will gladly give anyone a lift. If interested please contact me on 07919 865413 Yours sincerely, Richard T Baker

‘Concrete Cockerill’ was the subject of a presentation to the Club last month by David Summers, a retired architect.

John Cockerill was Great Yarmouth’s surveyor for 40 years until his retirement in 1922. He began his career with the Borough in 1870 at the age of 21, as ‘inspector of nuisances’ at a salary of £45 per annum. His employment spanned over half a century, a period of change influenced by the development of the railways, and also by the introduction of statutory bank holidays in 1871. This led to Great Yarmouth acquiring a reputation as a tourist resort, apart from its role a fishing port.

He gained his nickname following the concreting of paths in Gorleston High Street in 1874. Born in 1849 the son of a successful builder he played an influential role in the town’s development especially in the provision of utilities including drainage, lighting and waste collection. The first of his sons. Ralph Scott Cockerill, became a talented architect, responsible for the design of the Hippodrome in 1903 and Falstaff House in 1908.

Members saw numerous slides showing buildings of particular interest taken during a walking tour. The first was the Town Hall, built in 1878, following a design competition. Next was the fire station built in 1908 recently acquired by the Saffron Housing Trust for 50P! The walk continued along Regent Street past Falstaff House, then past the ‘Herring Arch’, a reminder of the Borough’s connection with the fishing industry.

Through the park was seen the School of Arts and Crafts, designed by John Cockerill, ‘a remarkably sensible building with polygonal columns, with steel frames and brick cladding’. This was not the opinion of the mayor who opened the building in 1912, describing it as a ‘lost opportunity, with an austerely unlovely exterior’. John Cockerill’s designs for Britannia Pier were criticised by a councillor on the grounds that ‘he was not a qualified architect’, whereupon he later qualified to become a member of the ARIBA.

Slides were shown of the Windmill Theatre (1908) and the Empire Cinema (1911), the latter is claimed to be the first cinema in the country. Both were designed by ASHewitt. The tour returns to the quay to take the ferry up river to Gorleston and Lowestoft, finishing at Columbus House, again designed by John Cockrill together with Doulton tiles. The Club meets next on 22 January at the Community Centre, when ladies’ are invited. New members are equally welcome! Ted Gadsden

Cromer’s New Year’s Day Firework Display All eyes will be on the skies above Cromer Pier at 5pm on 1 January 2014 for the traditional New Year’s Day Firework display, and organisers hope as many people as possible will again come to Cromer for the day – but urge them not to leave it until the last minute to come to Cromer. “We’re delighted it’s become such a successful annual event, and with plenty of good vantage points to watch the display, come early, we don’t want anyone to miss it,” says Firework Committee Chairman Jim Bond. “The idea has always been to bring people up to the coast for a breath of fresh air, something to eat and drink, and a fabulous firework display over the sea fired from Cromer Pier at 5pm.

"This year, 1 January is a Wednesday, so linger longer and enjoy the evening. Cafés, pubs and restaurants will also be open, so there'll be plenty of places to get a cuppa or something stronger." There will also be teas and coffees in the Church with mulled wine outside Cromer Museum. Raising over £3,000 for local good causes – and funding the following year’s display – the annual display attracts up to 8,000 people into Cromer on New Year’s Day.

to conclude with red fireworks, representing the poppies, floating on the sea to mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War in 1914.

3pm FUN RUN Work off those New Year’s Eve excesses with a gentle jog along Cromer Prom – or a five minute dash if you’re up to it! North Norfolk Beach Runners are organising their annual One Mile Fun Run as a curtain-raiser for the firework display at 5pm. Starting from the pier forecourt at 3pm, the run is open to all ages and abilities, with categories for under 13 year-olds, 14-16 year-olds, seniors, and even Fancy Dress. Registration will take place from 2.30pm on the pier forecourt for a fee of £1.

SPEND THE DAY IN CROMER Prior to the fireworks there will be illuminated light-sabres and lanterns available to buy during the afternoon out side Cromer Museum (next to the

"This year’s show will be as spectacular as in previous years. Premiere fireworks have been planning and building the show over the last few months and are hoping more than ever to produce effects that will light up the sea in a variety of colours, but this, as always, is all weather dependent.” This year’s display has been specially designed

Church). Mulled wine will again be served outside the museum, with tea, coffee, and hot soup available in the church.

Local cafés, pubs, shops and restaurants will also be open and other vendors are planning to ensure the crowds who descend on Cromer won’t go hungry. Please see the Town Council website (www.cromertown.org) and facebook page (‘New Year's Day Fireworks, Cromer’) for a list of some of the traders who will be participating. “PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY” Donations from spectators last year raised over £8,500, which is divided between funding the following year’s display and local charities.

“Everyone’s aware that budgets are still tight, but we do ask people give as generously as they can,” says Jim Bond. “Just a few coins can make a lot of difference to local charities and good causes – and without everyone’s help we couldn’t continue the annual display.” Visitors are urged to arrive in Cromer as early as possible on New Year’s Day. All three town car parks will be open. Runton Road car park will be charging a fixed charge of £2 per car for all day parking from 2pm on the day. Normal car park fees will apply on all other car parks. Please note Cromer Pier will be closed from 8am on New Year’s Day until after the display (7pm approx) although Tides Restaurant will be open from 10am – 4pm.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

Christmas is almost here and our Christmas Day Luncheon is almost fully booked so if you are thinking of joining us book your table as soon as you can. I am please to report that our New Year’s Eve Dinner is also very busy so if you want to see the New Year in with us and enjoy a great evening and live music call us soon.

Of course we are already thinking about next year and have plans underway for Valentines Day, Easter and are already looking at our Spring menues.

Method Place all the ingredients in a nonstick pan and simmer on a low heat until the sauce thickens.

Continue cooking until the Cranberries start to burst.

If you find the sauce to sweet add a squeeze of lemon juice.

Will keep for one month in a fridge.

Norfolk Car Enthusiasts

Last week we introduced our new wine list and our customers are already paying us compliments on the range of wines we have selected. Don’t forget to come along to our Christmas Sing-along on Sunday 15th December from 7pm when our village musicians Claire and Will are joined by our very own ‘Panto’ fairy ‘Fairy Liquid’ who together will be judging our Childrens Christmas Fancy Dress Competition. The winner will receive a Family Swim pass valid for a year. It’s a great prize and I am sure that there will be lots of children taking part in the fun event. A tombola and raffle will raise money for our Charity of the Year; ‘Nelson’s Journey’.

The second meeting of the newly formed Norfolk Car Enthusiasts club took place on November 27th at the Bluebell Inn in North Walsham and attracted an keen group of 13 people with an eclectic range of interests from supercars to classic cars.

A spokesman said that apart from the regular monthly meetings, for 2014, the group hoped to organise a trip to the Lotus factory, arrange Sunday runs, visit or participate in car shows, do quiz nights, invite speakers with special technical expertise, or those who want to do a slide show presentation of motoring trips they’ve been on. Other suggestions ranged from a day’s karting to organising longer trips to Scotland, Wales or even Europe.

I wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Cup Semo Goes Down to Wire as NWSCA Make it to Final

The focus in the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League turned to the quarter-finals of both Knockout Cups. In the doubles competition, NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted Cromer Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Paul Warner and Whil De Neve at North Walsham Sports Centre with Wilson and De Neve winning the opener in straight. Warner and De Neve had two match-points at 10-8 in the fourth set of the second battle, but they were saved by Kirkup and Stone who took the next four points to take the set before racing through the decider 11-2 to level the tie. Despite their 4-0 lead in the second set being pegged back to 7-7, Wilson and Warner beat Sawyer and Kirkup in straight. Next Kirkup and Stone again saved match-points to level the tie – Wilson and De Neve had three chances to close out, but the Walsham duo took their second as they won 15-13 in the fifth. Sawyer and Stone squandered three chances to take a set at 10-7 in the third and Wilson and Warner closed out their win 13-11 as Backhanders moved into

a 3-2 lead, which soon became 4-2 as the Cromer team moved one win from a semi-final berth following another win in straight. Wilson and Warner closed out Backhander’s 5-2 win with an 11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8 defeat of Kirkup and Stone.

Another quarter-final took place at Trunch Village Hall as Shark’s Chris Marshall and Steve and Matt Hudson hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, John Batchford and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Despite some great backhands from Marshall, NWSCA came through 5-0 with no sets dropped – although it was close with three sets going beyond deuce and a quartet that ended 11-9. The following week saw the same NWSCA trio visit Gresham’s School A in one of the closest ever semi-finals in the history of the competition which saw every one of the nine battles going to at least four sets. The score stood at 2-2 after a quartet of four set tussles and then Beane and Batchford moved two sets ahead of Hubert Cheng and Robin Thaxter. The Gresham’s

duo forced a decider which the visitors then won 11-5. The next battle saw four 11-9 sets, but three of them were won by Cheng and Haken Bennell as they beat Batchford and Baldock-Yaxley to level the semi-final at 3-3. Bennell and Thaxter then beat Beane and Batchford 14-12, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6 to move Gresham’s one win away from a place in the final, but Beane and Baldock-Yaxley beat Cheng and Bennell also in five to force a deciding ninth tussle. The deciding battle went right to the wire as Batchford and Baldock-Yaxley came through against Cheng and Thaxter 4-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 to seal the tightest of 5-4 wins for NWSCA.
