NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

On Thursday 18 September we had a very special coffee morning in St Benets Hall, North Walsham. For the first time we had slices of cake made by our fantastic helpers. It is a strange thing that people who are good gardeners are also brilliant cake makers. The range of cakes was amazing and no one knew what anyone else was bringing – congratulations to all who contributed and helped on the day.

That aside, we had a surprise visit from our MP Mr Norman Lamb, who spent about an hour with us and enjoyed coffee and cake as well as talking to everyone in the hall. Our other guest on the day was Gabby Ryan who won the ‘Miss Teen Norfolk 2014’ contest and was good

Over the years, we have always been humbled by the number of people who recommend us to their family and friends.

enough to distribute leaflets in the Market Place and draw our raffle for us. Our thanks go to her for giving us her time and bringing a bit of glamour to St Benets Hall.

So now we are into Autumn Planting and all that it entails. We start on 13 October and this year it will be ‘all hands to the pumps’ for all of us.

We now have several new sites to work on including five new towers as well as Grammar School Road bed. We do, however, also have some additional new helpers from last year and look forward to working with them.

All our helpers really love what we do and the local people seem to do so as well. We very rarely go into town to work without someone putting some money in our hands to help support our work. We are so very grateful as this shows us that we are to some degree getting it right.

See you all for more tea, coffee, scones and cake at the next Coffee Morning which will be in April 2015.

1940s Weekend

The ever popular Links Country Park Hotel in West Runton was host to another successful 1940s-themed evening on Saturday 20th September.

The group known as Groovy Gazza Productions preformed their act a Salute to the 1940s, packed full of songs and variety of a bygone era.

The show itself features a very talented company of six professional entertainers. Each established in their own field. Tributes are paid to Vera Lynn, George Formby, Gracie fields, Al Jolson and the Andrews Sisters.

The evening consisted of a three-course 1940sstyled menu with a modern day twist, colourfully decorated tables complete with union jack hand waving flags. The Runton Suite was decorated with bunting, sandbags and Spitfires hanging from the ceiling the whole evening was a wonderful tribute to the 40s and very heart warning it makes you proud to be British.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on 27 September to the aid of ‘Cam Diver’ with five persons on board. The crew had been unable to restart its engine so they called Humber Coastguard, who in turn paged Happisburgh Lifeboat at 12.50pm. ‘Douglas Paley’ was launched at 1 pm with Tim Grimmer at the helm and a crew of Sean Ferguson and John Fryer. It arrived at the ‘Cam Diver’ at 1.10pm, which was 3 miles off Bacton. The dive boat was then towed back to Sea Palling, where they had started from, arriving there at 1.47pm. ‘Douglas Paley’ then returned to station at 2.10pm. Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers are happy to see their D-Class, “Spirit of Berkhamsted” return to Station after undergoing her latest refit and service.

The “Spirit of Berkhamsted” came into service in October 2003 so is one of the oldest D-Class lifeboats in the RNLI fleet. However, thanks to this latest refit it is one of the most up to date D-Class in the fleet with the addition of Garmin Radio and SIMS Chart Plotter designed and made by the RNLI.

“Spirit of Berkhamsted” left the station on 15 July and returned on 16 September - the crew have been having training to enable them to operate the new equipment. The radio has DSC (digital selective calling) which is a bit like texting, which helps in sending information more accurately. Also, in an emergency at a push of a button, they can call for help and send their position to the Coastguard.

The SIMS chart plotter has been put on offshore lifeboats and the larger Atlantic 85, but now it’s started to be fitted to D-Class; it is much easier for the crew to use and it works out search patterns. The AIS (automatic identification system) not only shows the position of the lifeboat at all times, but if the vessel in difficulties has this system the lifeboat can find it on the chart plotter, which will then work out the course to the casualty.

The crew are very pleased with the new equipment and believe it will enable them to do their job of saving lives at sea more efficiently as well as making it much safer for them.

power of the sea.’

The RNLI’s key advice includes the following messages: • Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags, where you’ll have professional lifeguards looking out for you. • If you want a few drinks in the sun on the beach, remember that alcohol and water don’t mix, so drink after swimming, not before. • Remember that, despite warm air temperatures, the UK sea temperature is cold enough yearround to trigger cold water shock, so acclimatise gradually in shallow water. • Don’t over-estimate your ability – the sea is a very different environment to a pool and even the strongest swimmers can tire quickly. • If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic or try to swim against it; swim parallel to the shore until you’re free. • To avoid falls, stay away from cliff edges, stick to pathways and read safety signs.

Anyone wanting to contact Happisburgh RNLI Coastal Safety Team can telephone the lifeboat station on 01692 583269 or e-mail info@rnlihappisburgh.org.uk for advice or information.

Weddings were celebrated by a peal of bells and death was also signified, the number of peals, according to the status of the deceased, ranging from three for a girl to nine for a married man. One of the most recent occasions to be celebrated by a peal of bells, was the passage of the royal barge along the Thames during the Jubilee.

Paul went further in explaining the construction of bells, and especially their tuning by chipping particles off, and spinning on a lathe. With the aid of a model he demonstrated some of the mechanics of bell ringing, showing that a bell at the top of a circle becomes weightless, despite that it may weigh in excess of twenty hundredweight.

The next meeting is on 22 October, when new members will be cordially welcomed. Ted Gadsden

Chocolate and Baileys Pot

for weeks now... An added bonus of these pots is that they are gluten free – as are many of our desserts (our gorgeous cheesecake, for example).

As the summer slowly fades the big news from the Grove is luanch of our Autumn menu, running from 9th October. It’s packed with our favourite dishes with a slightly mellower twist – North Sea scallops with pea and lime risotto, the finest Icarus Hines steaks and of course John Davies’ Cromer lobster – and it also features some returning friends, including Norfolk quail and pheasant. We’re also excited to be showcasing wild Norfolk venison, as well as our fabulous garden produce including, blackberries, apples, pears, and all the winter vegetables that are coming through beautifully.

Of course no menu is complete without a delicious dessert and this is one that the kitchen team have been experimenting with (liberally!)

We look forward to seeing you – and of course our Christmas party menu is now available, please do book quickly as places are going fast!

John’s Landscape Photograph Wins the Nikon School Competition

North Walsham Photography Group was recently invited to take part in a Nikon School camera club competition, ‘Landscapes’ being the theme. The competition was to promote Nikon School, the new training facility in London. The prize for the winning image was extremely generous a Nikon D7100 18-105mm kit and a SB-700 Speedlight.

To the delight of the group, member John Riggott was the winner with his entry ‘The Winding Road’, a beautifully bucolic Shropshire scene. The acquisition of this top of the range Nikon is the culmination of a lifetime’s experience which began with the ubiquitous box Brownie, given to him many years ago by an aunt.

In the earlier days, he was fortunate enough to work for a Norwich-based printing company which allowed him to work in their dark room. His own dark room at home could only guarantee him complete darkness during the winter months! Eventually digital cameras came into existence, dispelling all need for a dark room. And since John’s primary interest is in photographing trees, both individually and collectively, this Nikon competition was completely up his forest road!

The North Walsham Photography Group meet in the Atrium every second and fourth Tuesday in the month, and are involved in a wide variety of activities, from talks and practical evenings, to competitions, both internal and inter-club. They welcome everyone with an interest in photography, from complete novices to the more experienced. Contact Liz Fiddy (Secretary) on 01692 582793 for further information.

Come

We’re hoping it’ll help get people in the mood to perhaps pick up an instrument themselves or join one of our music and singing groups.

The Atrium - October events Saturday morning cinema welcome family audiences and younger children. The Lego Movie is this month’s Family Friendly screening on Saturday 11 October at 11am. Tickets for children are just £3 and accompanying adults come free. All other tickets are just £3 too. The Family Friendly screenings are accompanied by activity in the café before the film, such as a play area, colouring-in and themed games.

Norwich City Concert Band, following on from sell-out shows elsewhere, will be presenting an evening of songs from West End shows and films, from Les Miserables to Lloyd Webber and Bond to Monty Python! Tickets for the concert on 17 October are just £7 and £5 for under 15s. The concert band formed in 1998 and has toured to Belgium, Holland and Germany and has always been very supportive

These events are all ahead of our NO/WHERE Fringe which takes place 28 October to 1 November, which we’re all looking forward too!”

of charities with different fundraising concerts. Under the direction of Mr Brian Dermott the band has a wide repertoire and is always interested in developing its programmes and membership. Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk said “It’s great to welcome the city’s concert band to our stage here at the Atrium theatre. We’ve had many requests for more live music and this concert will present familiar show tunes and movie themes.

MUNDESLEY PLAYERS – ‘An Inspector Calls’

In the penultimate week of October (22 – 24), a small but dedicated cast will present J B Priestley’s significant and challenging drama in the Coronation Hall.

The play was written “at top speed…within a week” in the Autumn of 1944 by a man who had fought in the Great War as a member of the Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment and survived many of the horrors of the Second World War. For me, as Director, the relevance of staging this play in 2014, the centenary of the 1914 – 18 war is crystal clear. Priestley saw a direct link between the causes of that conflict and the global destruction that was brought by the rise of fascism in the late 30s. He wrote in one of his BBC Radio Postscripts in 1941, “One must stop thinking in terms of property and power and begin thinking in terms of community and creation.” The enigmatic Inspector warns not only the Birling family, who are the central focus of the drama, but also all of his audiences, both in 1944 and now, 70 years later, in ringing Biblical terms ‘We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other. And I tell you that the time will soon come when, if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire, blood and anguish’. The irony of those words cannot be lost on us today in a world daily scarred by human folly and greed.

Whilst this is not a play for the morally squeamish, it is a superb piece of entertainment which, with its tension-building dialogue, examines both the dynamics of family life as well as the origins of twentieth century conflict. Don’t miss this theatrical tour de force, featuring Mundesley Players’ stalwarts not dissimilar to Priestley’s “Good Companions” - Ian Cashmore, Lesley Dillon, Neil Ellson, Val Newell, Paul Reynolds, Gerry Robins and Louise Stevens . Our hope is that the production will put this year’s numerous memorial events into a dramatic perspective. David Ross

New Events Group for North Walsham to be set up in advance of the first North Walsham Festival

Following on from recent news about Arts North Norfolk presenting the first North Walsham Festival for June next year, the arts charity is setting up an Events Group to help support the Festival and work on ideas for more events in and around North Walsham.

The first meeting will take place on Monday 20 October at 6.30pm at No. 1 Market Place in the town centre.

Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk said “Our new town centre hub is going well, we’re selling more tickets and more ideas and coming in to help promote North Walsham and all the events in it. This new group will help recruit some more support for our existing plans such as the North Walsham Festival and develop ideas to help other events and establish new ones. From coming up with ideas to helping clear up the rubbish afterwards, this is a big call out to the people of North Walsham to come and be part of it.”

Arts North Norfolk already has an array of events in full swing such as the NO/WHERE Fringe at the end of October and the Christmas Festival on 22 November at the Atrium. Plans for the North Walsham Festival include a weeklong programme of events including the first street parade in many years, leading to the Fun Day in the memorial park.

All are welcome to attend the Events Group meeting, please RSVP to info@artsnorthnorfolk.org or pop into the shop (open Wednesday to Saturday).

To find out more about events, workshops and shows, check out the organisation’s website at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org, call 01692 218060, email info@artsnorthnorfolk.org or pop into the shop when it’s open. The organisation is also on Facebook and Twitter so you can keep up-to-date there too.

2014 North Walsham Visit to Friesenried, Germany

My report for our town twinning visit to Germany, on 24 to 29 July is a little late but I went on holiday just after the visit which in no way suggests that I required a break!

Because of our journey there by coach we had to add a day on to each end of our trip which made this one a little longer than usual. The last time we travelled by coach was in 1994. Leaving from the Community Centre at 04:30am, we set off for an uneventful journey to our first overnight stop on the outskirts of Bonn, the former German Capital City.

Leaving Bonn for Friesenried after breakfast the next day allowed us time to stop at Rothenburg before our evening arrival to meet our hosts and of course to enjoy the brass band welcome and copious quantities of delicious food prepared for us. It is a shame that we have to wait two years for the next feast!

Our visit programme began on Friday through to Monday ready for our Tuesday morning departure for home. A visit with guided walk through Memmingen with its wonderful town centre and fabulous buildings was well worth

the trip. We were a day early for the annual ‘Fisher King’ celebration. A great many of the men (usually young) leap into the river flowing through the town and the one who catches the biggest trout is king for the year. I understand that those exiting the river require something of a clean up afterwards! Our mountain trip was into Austria to visit the Kanzelwand a 2,000 metre high “hill” via cable car. Sadly it was very cloudy and later very wet but we had time to climb the summit. The signpost read “summit 100 metres, half an hour”. In the cloud we could not see that the climb was almost vertical but the Brits did it from 15 minutes plus.

King Ludwig II, the builder of Castles, was our host for a visit to Castle Linderhof. The building, interior and gardens are truly magnificent.

During the visit free time was organised for families to organise get togethers and outings to attractions not in the programme.

All visits are themed and this one centred on the anniversaries of the two world wars, the

fall of the Berlin Wall and how former foes have transcended the past to build lasting friendships.

Forty members took part this year, of whom six were Paston College sixth form students who were a credit to our association, their school and parents. We were all accommodated with local families.

My highlight was on the Kanzelwand, where two Austrian couples were celebrating an anniversary.

They were in a cable car equipped with a fully laid table drinking champagne, as they reached me at the top a waitress from the restaurant almost threw in the soup course for the return journey down and I last saw them on their way back up to no doubt receive their main course then only to repeat it all for the sweet course. Bearing in mind the weather, they really did have their heads in the clouds! They certainly looked to be having fun.

New members always sought and very welcome. Steve Wolstenholme

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Yet more kittens have arrived in care, all from outside situations and most of which needing to be hand reared. Stephanie, Kelly, Irene and Lesley are all now bottle feeding kittens and I can honestly say we have never had so many at one time before. There are also more kittens outside which need to be caught before they become feral and eight cats to be trapped to be neutered. As volunteers we only have a limited amount of time to commit to these situations and do need to rely heavily on the help and co-operation of people living where the cats are situated. Fortunately, in most instances, people are only too happy to help as, at the end of the day, they will benefit. It is usually a case of asking them to identify where the cats/kittens are living, set a trap to catch them, and ring us once they have been caught. Once caught, the kittens come into care and we take the adult cats of both sexes to the vets and get them neutered. Although it only takes a few moments to set a trap and to give us a call once something has been caught, it does mean a far bigger saving of time from our point of view.

At present we have two traps in the garden of one lady and have recently caught one kitten and one cat there. We have already taken 12 kittens from this area so you can imagine how quickly the problem could have escalated if they had not come into care. Four of the 12 kittens were actually caught in another lady’s garden earlier in the year. She and her

Dedicated care for pets and exotic animals

In contrast to looking ahead we were proud of four of our pupils who represented young people at North Walsham’s WW1 commemoration event at The Atrium on the first weekend in September. They sang Douglas Guest’s haunting version of the exultation ‘The Fallen’, and provided two readers of diary extracts, one from a stretcher-bearer and the other that of a wife waiting at home for (ultimately tragic) news.

partner also managed to trap the mother who was neutered and returned to the area. If she had not been caught she would have had at least one more litter by now and the three female kittens would probably have been pregnant too. Apart from all the kittens now in care, we Tansy and Dill, the two Dilham stray kittens should not forget all the lovely adult cats in care that are also looking for a new home. Their ages range from a few months to the oldest, which are roughly 10 years old, so if you would prefer an older cat there are plenty to choose from.

NORTH WALSHAM & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

“Have you seen the Muffin Man?” was the intriguing question asked by our September speaker, Geoff Worton.

Taking a set of Lambert & Butler cigarette cards from 1934 as his cue, Geoff introduced a fascinating cast of London characters and street traders from bygone days.

Before recycling, there was the Rag & Bone Man, before sewer systems, there were the quaintly-named Honey Carts and before TV, there were Punch & Judy shows and street entertainers.

There was the ice cream vendor and his “penny licks” of ice cream – with the glass container being returned to the vendor and just swilled out before being re-used for the next customer... unsurprisingly questions of hygiene led to the practice being banned and to the introduction of the wafer cone we know today.

Geoff also talked about the Chestnut Seller, the Coffee-Stall Keeper, the Flower-Seller and the Pavement Artist who still survive today, albeit in limited numbers and in differing forms. In all, a very entertaining talk and for many, a walk down memory lane! Diana Velhagen

BLUEBELL POND CLEAN

We picked a perfect day, with not a drop of rain in sight, for our annual Bluebell Pond clean.

With volunteers Sue & Becky Richardson, George Blackburn, Jack Pearson, Chris Hicks, Andrew Brown, Andy Creasy and Audrey Haynes on parade, work started at 10am on Sunday 28 September and by noon the skip was full of overgrown plants from within the pond and its surrounding area.

It was a sight to see, with George & Andy dressed in wet suits working in the pond, and everyone else busy either cutting back to ground level the plants surrounding the pond or filling the skip. Wild flower seeds were also planted around the area.

I would like to thank Cliff &Chris Cushion and Mike Kirby who are great supporters of the Bluebell Pond society, and finally our thanks to Granville Yaxley who keeps the grass in good order. Roy Haynes (Chairman)

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CONKERS

Do children still play conkers? Or is the game a victim of Health and Safety worries? It would be sad if children have stopped as conkers has a long history. The first mention of the game is in 1821 when snail shells or hazelnuts were used but from the 1850s horse chestnuts became fashionable. Conkers were also known as obblyonkers, cheggies or cheesers.

This is the ideal time of the year for children to plant tree seeds to learn all about growing and the link between seeds and trees. So take your children for a walk in the park or the countryside to collect some seeds such as conkers or acorns. Check the seeds do not have any holes in them – if they do it may mean that insect larvae are inside eating them.

Place some crocks at the base of a pot, then nearly fill it with compost. Ask your children to plant their seed about 2cm (0.8in) deep, then cover it over with compost and water it well. The pots can then be placed in a shady place in the garden for the winter. Make sure that the children check them from time to time to make sure the pots do not dry out. Explain how it will be necessary to wait until spring to see if their seed has sprouted. The plant should be repotted as it grows. It is worth planting several seeds just in case some don’t germinate.

If children do not collect conkers nowadays, the position was very different 100 years ago when in the autumn of 1917, a notice appeared on the walls of classrooms and scout huts across Britain. ‘Groups of scholars and boy scouts are being organised to collect conkers... This collection is invaluable war work and is very urgent. Please encourage it’. It was not explained why the conkers were needed but the children were offered 7s 6d for every hundredweight they handed in.

The secret, when finally revealed was that they were needed to help with the production of acetone an essential part of the propellant for shells and bullets known as cordite. Before the war acetone had been produced from wood, mainly imported from the USA, but it was soon realised that an alternative domestic supply was needed and a Jewish scientist Chaim Weitzmann developed a process

involving the use of maize and potatoes to produce acetone at factories in Dorset and Norfolk. Together the two factories produced 90,000 litres a year, enough to feed the seemingly insatiable demand for cordite. (The British Army and Royal Navy fired 240,000,000 million shells between 1914 and 1918.)

By 1917 the maize and potatoes were needed to feed the hungry people of Britain and another source of acetone was needed and Weitzmann suggested that conkers might be the answer and the appeal to boys and girls to collect horse chestnuts went out. Production was centred in Kings Lynn but there were technical problems and delays and the process was never as successful as hoped.

So did conkers help win the war? Well they certainly played a small part but perhaps the most surprising outcome was that Weitzmann, a leading Zionist, was rewarded by the British Government for his work on producing acetone by their support for the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine (The Balfour Declaration). When the state of Israel was finally established in 1948 Chaim Weitzmann became its first president.

So when you encourage your children to plant their conkers you can also include a bit of history and tell them of the role of this humble seed. Bob Wilkinson

School Children visit the Houses of Parliament

Following a visit to their schools by the local MP Mr Norman Lamb earlier this year, the children on the School Councils were excited to be invited to visit him at the Houses of Parliament in London. Last month they gathered eagerly at the train station in North Walsham to begin their journey. A coach met them in London to give them a tour of the capital’s highlights and popular tourist destinations, before driving them to Parliament Square. ‘Wow, I can’t believe I have visited such an important and spectacular place!’ said Oliver age10. ‘It was even better than I was expecting because it was so huge!’ said Amy age 6. The Houses of Parliament was a very busy place that day following the recent referendum, so the children were able to meet several MPs as well as enjoy a full tour of the building. Mrs Finch, executive deputy headteacher of the schools, organised the visit for the children. ‘This is such an important visit for the children- we have a democratically-elected School Council so the opportunity to come to London to the Houses of Parliament has shown them how their experiences in school are part of our country’s traditions’. On their return to school the children presented an assembly to the classes to share their experiences and some photos of the trip.

‘I want to be an MP when I grow up!’ said Kyle age 7.

SMG Architects have carefully designed the refurbishment to retain the character of the 1930s building on the outside, but completely transformed the interior. The roof construction has used recycled tiles from the old roof, which have been cleaned and put on the new frame. Similarly all the windows will be refurbished and improved to retain the character of the building. The company building the project, Draper and Nichols Ltd, who built the award winning Scarburgh Science Centre at the College, have completely gutted the internal areas and will soon start the intensive rebuilding programme.

The Art area will have four new classrooms, a dark room, new equipment and a gallery area entrance. The new theatre will have a new entrance, a larger performance area, new seating, changing rooms, and storage and toilet facilities. The College have worked with a consultant to include the latest up to date lighting and production equipment, to support the award winning Far East Youth Theatre Company.

Paston Sixth Form College Awards Evening 2014

Kevin Grieve welcomed over 200 students and their parents to a packed St Nicholas Church on the evening of Thursday 11 September. He told the audience “once again students had achieved some outstanding results and North Walsham and the whole North Norfolk community should be very proud of the student performance in 2014”. He was particularly pleased with a 98% A level pass rate and a 100% pass rate on BTEC courses. The results at A level included an A*-B pass rate of 43% and an A*-C rate of 70%.In BTEC 71% achieved high grades with 24% achieving triple star distinction level. “It is not surprising that over 250 students are going to University after A level and BTEC courses, with over 20% going on to top Russell Group Universities and a record five students going to Oxford and Cambridge. All over the country Universities will be receiving some talented people from Norfolk” said the Principal.

In his address Kevin Grieve thanked all the teaching, support staff, students and parents for their hard work over the last two years. He also spoke about students progressing on to University, Apprenticeships and employment. He explained that students at Paston were very ambitious and realised the benefits of going to University. In Norfolk only 19% of students go to University compared to 50% in the Eastern region. At Paston 60% of students decide to make the transition to University, going on to a range courses throughout the country. He also praised the students who had progressed on to apprenticeships and employment which provide worthwhile career prospects.

Reverend Paul Cubitt newly appointed at St Nicholas Church, spoke to the students and parents about making a difference and having high aspirations and ambitions. He then presented the certificates and prizes to all the students including 90 Norfolk County Scholars. Students enjoyed the citations from teachers who explained the reasons for the awards. Special prizes included the Ivan Palfrey Cup presented to Gemma Beasy by Ted Gadsden for the Rotary Club and also the

Kristopher Harper Prize to Samuel Webb and the Kristopher Harper 30 Year Celebration Prizes to Daniel Wicks, Julia Dawson and Bethany Hughes. The Paston Sportsperson of the year was awarded to Elliot Wesby

“Once again the Awards Evening has been a brilliant success” said Kevin Grieve.

How to Save Tax

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

panacea. What might work to protect assets from being assessable for the cost of care might well not work for tax-planning. Social Services and the Local Authority apply different tests to those of the taxman.

Any Inheritance Tax saving scheme that looks ‘too good to be true’ almost certainly is.

There is a politician-lead crackdown on tax avoidance scheme. This is more aimed at the super-wealthy than the man in the street with money in the bank or a house that is worth a bit, but impacts on them too.

Whatever you own, or once owned but still enjoy the benefit of, as well as anything you have given away in the last seven years is fairgame for the taxman when you die. I have written articles on using the various small annual exemptions and allowances in the recent past and those used consistently are beneficial.

Inheritance Tax is saved for the benefit of one’s heirs and of course a solicitor has to be very clear who their client is. The solicitor’s duty is to their client and not to the wider family (other than in a very secondary way).

Giving your house to your children only ‘works’ for Inheritance Tax planning if there is no ‘gift with reservation of benefit’, which generally means that you need to pay a market rent; whereas, an asset protection trust (where Joking apart, spending is a good way of saving your children own your home but allow you tax but spending too much can leave you to live there rent-free) can still work for care financially-stranded at the time when you fee protection if you do it long enough before are most vulnerable. nursing or other care is required. particularly as risk of having to take a tougher line as we have a higher than the national average proportion of older people.

Remember always that it is only when you are worth more than £325,000 (or £650,000 in the case of a married couple, or civil partners) that Inheritance Tax will be paid on your death.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Advice must be tailored to the individual and their family and finances. Even hard-bitten tax advisors appreciate that schemes which save tax, but at personal inconvenience, are often not the answer. The important thing is to take advice early while you still have the health and energy to implement arrangements, to do this before a care home becomes anything close to a reality, and (using your crystal ball) more than seven years before you die. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Fat is not all bad

A three-dimensional face lift using your own fat

Why fat? Two main characteristics of a beautiful face are fullness and flawless skin. In this article we will discuss a procedure that helps both. Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler'. It is an active metabolic tissue and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements which make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement as well.

What happens with facial ageing? The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.

as fat injections or autologous fat grafting.

How are fat injections different from commercial fillers? There are many commercial injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm etc that are available for facial rejuvenation. Each of these products has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. An ideal substance would be readily available, inexpensive, long-lasting, natural-feeling, and would not cause adverse reactions. Your own tissue meets these requirements. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required.

supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells. Facial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift.

What will my recovery be like? Patients who have fat transfer experience a quick recovery. You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hours you may increase your activity as tolerated. Most patients are back to work within 2 to 5 days. Refrain from heavy exercise for a few weeks. Some amount of swelling and bruising can occur. Ice compresses are applied for 24-48 hours to minimize inflammation. Discourage massage and excessive facial animation immediately following fat grafting. These restrictions are to prevent migration of fat away from the desired areas of treatment.

What happens during the procedure? This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. New look for NHS patient transport service

The NHS patient transport service for Norfolk (excluding Great yarmouth) has undergone a new look. The telephone access number has also changed.

From 1 October the service will be provided by ERS Medical. ERS Medical is a major force in providing non-emergency ambulance services to the NHS across the country.

ERS Medical is already a familiar name in the area as its courier division has been operating around Norfolk since July 2012. Its fleet of courier vehicles service the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn as well as GP surgeries, dentists and podiatrists in the region.

ERS Medical was awarded the 5-year contract to provide the service across all of Norfolk, excluding Great Yarmouth and Waveney, by the NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups for Norwich, South Norfolk, West Norfolk and North Norfolk.

The service carries patients who are registered with a GP Practice in Norwich, South, West or North Norfolk, who have a medical need and who are unable to travel without assistance. About 115,000 patient journeys were undertaken in 2013/14.

Slipper Swap

For patients there will be no change in service. If eligible, patients will still be taken to their appointment via patient transport vehicles. And regular patients will recognise familiar faces because many of the staff have transferred to ERS Medical.

The telephone number to book journeys has changed. Patients who believe they may be eligible and who need to make a booking will now call 0333 240 4100.

Mark Taylor, Chief Executive Officer North Norfolk CCG said “We are pleased to have re-procured a contract to run this service in compliance with public sector legislation. There were a number of bidders but ERS Medical was chosen because of the quality of the service offered and importantly, the value for taxpayers’ money.

“It will be good to work with ERS Medical and we have confidence that together we will continue an excellent and valued NHS service to our patients.”

Chief Brendan Fatchett, Managing Director for ERS Medical, said “We are delighted to expand our offering in Norfolk and build on the existing services we’ve been delivering to the area for a number of years. We look

forward to continuing to work with the Norfolk community and delivering a service which is focussed on patient care.”

ERS Medical is also working with Voluntary Norfolk to bring the ‘Car Link’ Volunteer Drivers’ Scheme back into operation. The Scheme will recruit and train volunteer drivers to transport patients and clients to health, social care and wellbeing appointments. Additionally, its national apprenticeship scheme, in partnership with YMCA Training, will see ERS Medical offering career opportunities locally to candidates aged 18 to 24. The scheme presents an opportunity to work within the healthcare sector on either a one or two-year fixed term contract while gaining Level 2 and 3 NVQ qualifications. Visit www.ersmedical.co.uk/apprenticeships or www.ersmedical.co.uk/volunteers for more information.

The Slipper Swap event organised by the Healthy Communities team from Norfolk County Council will take place from 10am until noon on Thursday 16 October at North Walsham Library (please note not as stated in last issue owing to incorrect information supplied).

COAST Coming Soon

Known locally as COAST, the Cromer and Sheringham Art and Literary Festival is coming soon in autumn half term. The festival kicks off on 24th October with an evening featuring acclaimed blues musician Ron Sayer at the White Horse in Overstrand, followed by an exceptional week of exhibitions, music, poetry, dancing and fun on the theme of 'War and Peace'. Highlights of this year’s festival are an exhibition of photographs from Sir Michael Savory's personal archive at Muckleburgh, two special afternoons of poetry at Cromer’s Virginia Court Hotel, a war-time sing along at Sheringham Little Theatre Hub, creative writing and filmmaking workshops, a musical afternoon with the Honeybirds at the Sea Marge Hotel in Overstrand and a family circus event in Cromer Community Hall. Sally Wallace, Chair of COAST says “This year, building on the successes of the last 4 years, we are holding two exciting competitions to encourage creativity amongst our communities. Entries in the short film competition will be shown at a special screening, with tapas, on 28th at Sheringham Little Theatre. The 40+ entries to the poppy painting competition, showing a vast range of ideas, styles and content, will be on display at the Atrium in North Walsham from 24th October. We look forward to seeing you soon.” The full programme can be found on the COAST website at casaf.co.uk. If you particularly want to attend an event make sure you book your tickets soon - the Jarrold Literary Lunch is already sold out!

St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market Welcome Developments …

The news that the Big Lottery Fund Awards for All Scheme has approved the project to improve the car park and upgrade the recycling areas is tremendously encouraging. Nearly £10,000 has been allocated. The access and surface will be much more user-friendly and the recycling skips will sit on a concrete area that can be kept clean. The work is expected to take place before the end of the year, whilst contractors are working so the skips will be re-positioned but still accessible. Fly-dumping is an ever present problem, the latest deposit of grass-cuttings and dead petunias has generated warnings from both NNDC and the Parish Council but is something that we cannot prevent. Any information as to the perpetrators would be very welcome. Once the improvements are completed CCTV surveillance will be installed.

Less Welcome Developments …

The news that NNDC are extending their doorstep collections of recyclable materials to include glass was expected but not welcome. Many charities, clubs, churches, schools etc have organised recycling as a funding stream for many years and could now potentially lose that income. It is not clear whether the council’s decision to compete in this market is to meet political targets, or whether the costs of administration will leave a surplus for the rate-payers.

PLEASE continue to support your local community groups with glass and paper donations. If you are donating your recyclables to a charitable collection point maybe offer to bring family and neighbour’s on the same visit. The financial rewards to charities are not enormous but provide a steady income. Currently a rebate of over £50 a tonne is claimable and groups like Thorpe Market Church have no means of replacing the income lost under the new scheme.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP?

The Royal British Legion raises the major proportion of the monies they spend supporting current and former service personnel through their annual Poppy Appeal.

This year, in North Walsham, we are again fortunate to have received invitations from both Sainsbury’s and Waitrose to collect in their stores. Unfortunately old age and infirmity reduces our pool of volunteer collectors each year and we are desperately in need of further volunteers to ensure we raise as much as possible to help support the Legion’s work.

If you could spare an hour or two any day at a time to suit yourself between 28 October and 9 November to assist please contact the local Poppy Appeal organiser, David Audley, on 01692 404418

Young People had a fantastic, free summer of fun with North Norfolk Youth Hubs North Norfolk Youth Hubs had a fantastic summer of activities with young people from Cromer, Sheringham, undesley and Stalham. The Youth Hubs is a Youth Advisory Board funded project that started last year, aimed at providing young people in rural areas with access to free, positive activities.

Youth workers from MAP—a young persons’ charity based in Norwich and Great Yarmouth—developed a range of activities for young people that help them learn new skills, build self-esteem, and raise confidence. Providing a safe and welcoming space for young people to socialise in is at the heart of the Hubs’ aims. Activities included a 4 day vintage photography workshop with Cromer museum, a paintballing excursion, a photo walk, a trip to Barton Turf to learn about the broads, a graffiti art session and a relaxing walk around Sheringham Park.

Now that the summer is over, the Hubs will be starting up again from 4-6pm at Stalham Youth Club and Oddfellows’ Hall in Sheringham every other Thursday, and at Merchant’s Place in Cromer every second Wednesday.

As well as having a safe, warm place to socialise in, the Hubs are base where young people can access sexual health advice, information about drugs and alcohol and confidential support from experienced youth workers. If you or someone you know is interested in joining one of the Hubs, then please contact youth workers Will Mills or Hannah Garrard on 07876 864281 or email williammills@map.uk.net or hannahgarrard@map.uk.net

The Perfect Pickled Egg

A small Norfolk business based near North Walsham has fought off competition from around the world to be crowned World Pickled Egg Champions. The Championship, run by Aspall, was concluded on Sunday at the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival where judges, celebrity chef Valentine Warner and food writer Xanthe Clay of The Telegraph, selected Ollands Farm Foods from Happisburgh as this year’s winner.

But the award-winning products aren’t just any pickled egg. These are Pickled Quails Eggs, with a touch of chilli and mustard seeds, to

give them an extra kick. Kim Holt from Ollands Farm Foods explains more “We pride ourselves on using local produce wherever possible, so these are genuine Norfolk quails eggs. We’ve worked on the recipe over the past couple of years and are now happy we’ve cracked it. It’s a fiddly process – I peel all the quail’s eggs by hand – but it’s worth it!”

Business owner Mary Ann Stuart continues “We couldn’t believe it when we got the email to say we’d won! We weren’t able to make it to the Festival because both Kim and I were out selling our wares at local farmers markets. We’re really proud of what we’ve achieved,

New youth forum for North Walsham set up to encourage young people’s voices to be heard

Edge TV, a new online channel made by and for 13-19 year olds in the North Walsham area has been going for a few months and already has a handful of films to show online, from documentaries to news reports and blogs responding to topics relevant to the age group.

Responding to feedback, the group will now set up a youth forum where young people aged 13-19 are welcome to come along and have their voice heard about local issues and set up activity and events for peer age groups. Ideas so far include under 18 club nights and a pop-up milkshake bar. Alice Portway, aged 13 and a member of Edge TV said “We’re setting up the group to show that there is a place for young people and that our ideas and be made happen. A lot of stuff goes on at the Atrium and with Arts North Norfolk and we’re told the best ideas for our age group comes from us!”

The first meeting of the North Walsham Young People’s Forum will take place on Wednesday 15 October at 6pm, at Arts North Norfolk’s town centre hub, No 1 Market Place. Young people are also invited to come along to Edge TV which runs every Wednesday 5.30pm -7pm at No. 1. It’s free to take part and new skills can be learnt each week such as filming and presenting. If you would like more information, pop into the shop (open Wednesday to Saturday) or email edgeTV@artsnorthnorfolk.org.

MP set to raise over £6,000 for local health charities after 100 mile bike ride North Norfolk MP completed a 100 mile sponsored bike ride at the end of last month to support local health charities. His efforts are set to raise over £6,000.

“It is a relief to have completed the ride in one piece but I am thrilled by the donations that have been made to support local health charities. The generosity of local people who have sponsored my ride is truly humbling.”

Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received so far is over £6,143 and with Gift Aid added they will be worth over £6,500 to local charities.

The 100 mile cycle route took in community health facilities at North Walsham, Cromer, Kelling and Wells as well as visits to the Break shop at Stalham and the Break headquarters in Sheringham.

and hope we’re doing our bit to help get Norfolk producers on the map.”

Ollands Farm Foods is an up and coming business which specialises in hand-making quality jams, preserves and chutneys. They’ve had a very successful year. As well as being World Pickled Egg Champions, two of their marmalades won prizes in the Dalemain World's Original Marmalade Festival in Cumbria. So what’s next for them?

“Is it too early to talk about Christmas? We’re working on our Christmas puds and mincemeat at the moment. Who knows, if there’s a Mincemeat World Championships, maybe we’ll enter that!”

North Walsham Table Tennis Youth triumphs over rxperience on this occasion The season began with the first rounds of the two Knockout Cups and with twenty-four teams in each competition, eight are drawn are random to receive byes. In the singles it was a case of youth against experience as NWSCE’s James Lester, Stuart Hook and Joel Lodge (captained by Eric Dolden) battled out a derby at North Walsham Sports Centre against NWSCC’s Chris Johnson, Richard Porritt and Ronnie Duncar. Lester came from two down to win the opener against Johnson before Hook won a tense battle with Porritt 9-11, 14-12, 9-11, 13-11, 15-13. There were then four set wins for Lodge and Hook against Duncar and Johnson respectively before Lester sealed the win in five against Duncar and with Lodge winning a dead rubber in four against Porritt, NWSCE progressed with a good 6-0 victory. The adjoining table saw a Cup battle between two Premier teams as NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday hosted Outlaw’s Colin Humphries, Steve Patterson and John Hancock (Jnr).

Elliott won the opener in four against Humphries, before a 5-0 lead in the decider proved decisive as Patterson levelled against Price. The NWSCB player was on the wrong end of a crucial edge at 11-11 in the fifth as Humphries took the next

point to win, but Halliday controlled well to beat Patterson in straight. With Hancock firing on all cylinders and not dropping a set, Outlaws could not be defeated at 5-2 up, although NWSCB then won both of the two dead rubbers.

There were two matches for Walsham teams at the ACT Centre as Aylsham A’s Dave Johns, Peter Ward and Ian Potter hosted NWSCD’s Ray Howe, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone. Despite Johns saving four set-points at 6-10 in the third, Howe hung on to win an opening contest of many ebbs and flows 11-8, 6-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7. A mix of good luck and judgement saw Stone get past Ward in four before good serves, pace and attack saw Kirkup defeat Potter in three. Ward’s challenge fell apart after the first against Howe and another straight sets win followed as Kirkup beat Johns. A win in a dead rubber concluded POOL 1 NWSCD’s 6-0 win. On the adjoining table, Water too cold

for the visitors – fighting off a superb comeback attempt from Miller to win 11-0, 11-2, 10-12, 15-13. Powell’s serves always got him out of trouble while Edna Stone played very well to take a set from Rout – the Aylsham player edging out Stan Baldock 13-11 in the third. There were also mixed results for the home teams in the doubles – there were 5-0 wins for NWSCA and NWSCD away to the Sheringham based LCC Lobsters and undesley B respectively, but at home NWSCC lost 6-0 to Aylsham A while NWSCF faced the toughest possible start with a tie against Gresham’s School A – the visitors winning 5-0.

Aylsham B’s Neil Powell, John Miller and Hugh Rout won 6-3 against NWSCF. Phil Mole took a maximum

Weather with Ned Nimbus

Time to look ahead to the end of the year. The past three months came out as forecast with August taking the booby prize with a fair amount of unsettled weather following an early stirring up by ex hurricane 'Bertha'. October should give us another fine month overall very much in line with predictions made five to six months ago . These forecast are initially put together at that time out and firmed up, if necessary, closer to publication.

November will give us more a mix of weather but still, overall, a bias in favour of fair conditions and average or above average temperatures. December is likely to continue in the same vein but high pressure to the north and slipping slowly to the west of us will bring in winds from the north or north-west, eventually more unsettled weather will gain the upper hand. An initial look into the start of 2015 indicates an early reminder we are in the middle of winter and a drop of temperature, lasting for some time is a distinct probability.
