A family affair
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
At the Rotary Club of North Walsham’s Charter Night dinner on Friday 14 November, Rotary District Governor, Nick Cork, presented two of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowships: one to club member, Jim Costello and one to a non Rotarian, the Reverend Valerie Watts.
The fellowships bear the name of Paul Harris, who founded the Rotary movement in Chicago in 1905. The Fellowships are awarded to mark very special service in the community and both Valerie and Jim demonstrate this in spades.
The award of a fellowship to Valerie Watts is special for a number of reasons but most notably as it brings a second Paul Harris Fellowship to a North Walsham household, as husband John, a Rotarian for 28 years, is also a Paul Harris Fellow. This is very rare in the UK.

A family affair
Continued from front cover... Valerie, a retired teacher, is a priest, and will be known to many readers as a member of the pastoral team at St Nicholas’ Parish Church in the town. Among the seventy plus members and guests at the Charter Night Dinner was Rev Paul Cubitt who has recently become the vicar of North Walsham and team leader at St Nicholas’.
Christmas comes early to St Nick’s!
Little Nick’s Nursery welcomed Nursery and Reception parents and carers to help their child make a Christmas tree decoration to go on the school Christmas tree. This has become a tradition at St. Nicholas House School in North Walsham, where the festivities started with a Christmas Bazaar at the end of November. Each child in the school makes a decoration to hang on the school tree.
Jim Costello has been a Rotarian for over 25 years. A member of the North Walsham Club since 2000 when he moved to Ingham from Burton-upon-Trent where he joined Rotary in 1988, Jim was been president of both his clubs. Jim now lives at Crostwight with his wife Jennie. Among his many contributions to the work of the Club has been the idea of a car park scheme for Canaries fans on match day, manned by Rotarians and with all proceeds going to club charities.
The dinner is held annually to mark the anniversary of the founding or “chartering” of the Club in November 1945, so there has been a Rotary Club in North Walsham now for 69 years. Jim Costello and The dinner, held at the Old Rectory, DG Nick Cork. Crostwick, was attended by members of the club and their partners, guests from the Aylsham, Cromer and Sheringham, Wroxham Bure Valley and Broadland rotary clubs, and representatives from the Inner Wheel, Round Table and Probus. The Club was also pleased to welcome Richard Sims, mayor of North Walsham, and Nick Cork who, as District Governor, heads Rotary in Eastern England. These were all cordially welcomed to the event by Club President, Paul Ryall.

Council to provide free parking over the weekend before Christmas
Parking in North Norfolk District Council’s car parks will be free over the weekend before Christmas, 20 and 21 December.
The Council has decided to once again waive pre-Christmas parking charges. This year, following requests from town councils, parking will be free over the weekend of 20 and 21 December, to help persuade local people to buy their Christmas gifts and supplies locally, to support North Norfolk’s traders at this crucial time of year, and as a gesture of goodwill for the festive season.
Over the weekend of 20 and 21 December shoppers will be able to stay throughout the day without a ticket in any District Council–run car park, saving them up to £1.20 an hour.
Councillor Rhodri Oliver, NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, said “One of North Norfolk District Council’s key aims is to support local businesses and, with Christmas being a critical time for traders, we want to encourage people to use the wealth of shops on their doorsteps. I hope that by investing in some free car parking over the weekend before Christmas we will encourage people to keep their shopping local.”

Town Council brings Christmas Market Bonanza to North Walsham! December is a busy month and for North Walsham residents it is going to get busier – and better – with an exciting weekend of special markets in the town centre on 19, 20 and 21 December. The 18 December kicks the weekend off with the established market familiar to many residents, and the 19th and 20th brings a fantastic opportunity to browse and buy something new – continental goods, with delicious treats such as confectionery, ale, wine, exotic coffees, and a range of Christmas gifts to enhance your shopping choices. Sunday 21st is showcasing a traditional Christmas Farmers’ market, a chance for visitors and residents to fully immerse themselves in Christmas fayre. North Walsham Town Council, together with a team of voluntary residents, have brought enthusiasm and hard work to the enterprise, determined to showcase the popular North Norfolk town as a
great place in which to live and do business.
A resident spokesperson stated ‘People often ask what ‘localism’ means. It means all of us, the Town Council, residents and others, working together for the best for our town. And it doesn’t stop here. In 2015, with the expertise of Charlie Hodson from The Norfolk Food and Drink Festival on board, we also aim to bring ‘real Norfolk’ goods to North Walsham in a series of other markets. This is a great town, with great people, and we believe it has the potential to become not only one of the best market towns in Norfolk - but one of the best in England.’
Saturday 20 December – Continental Market (9am to 4pm)
Sunday 21 December – Traditional Christmas Farmers’ Market (9am to 4pm)
PARKING IS FREE ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
Dates for your diary and parking information:

Carols for the RNLI

After a fabulous debut last winter (despite the hurricane conditions!) we are once again hosting an evening of carols in aid of Cromer RNLI on Monday 22 December from 6pm.
There will be the finest mince pies, mulled wine plus lots of other seasonal goodies from our family of wonderful local suppliers. And of course the chance to sing along with the great community that we have here in Cromer. We managed to raise over £300 last Christmas and it would be great to top that this year - so please do come along!
Cantamus Choir Christmas Concert
Cantamus Choir’s Christmas Concert on Saturday 6 December at 7pm in Overstrand Church promises to be a very festive affair.
With a programme of French and English music that includes serious and light hearted pieces, Cantamus will bring you seasonal joy and cheer. They will be music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, famous for writing the music used as the theme to the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such as John Taverner's 'The Lamb' and popular arrangements by John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the Snowman and a new carol written by our own musical director David Ballard.

Traditional Norfolk Treacle Tart
jumper and donate for Ollie's fund, which goes to the great work that his doctors and nurses do for sick children in the midlands.
We are still very busy here at the Grove with our Christmas party season underway (though we still have a couple of slots available!) and full houses on Friday and Saturday nights.
This year we're delighted to be repeating our wonderful Christmas Carol Concert, with all proceeds to the fantiastic Cromer RNLI, on Monday 22nd December at 6pm. Last winter we raised over £300 for the lifeboats despite hurricane conditions which led to the marquee taking a short flight at 3am, and coming to rest in a controlled crash against the lawn flowerbeds fifty meters away. Hopefully this year we are due some decent weather!
It's a fabulous night so please do come along. We are also raising money for Ollie, 9 year-old nephew to the Gravelings, who is suffering from a horrible cancer behind his knee and is very ill in Brimingham Children's Hospital. Come along on the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th of December wearing your best Christmas
We have a great recipe for you this week! There's nothing better at Christmas than a properly traditional pudding that really warms you up, and our Norfolk treacle tart is proving extremely popular this winter. It's a firm favourite with all our diners (and our staff!) so please do pop in to sample it. Happy Christmas from all of us!
Traditional Norfolk Treacle Tart For the short crust: 125g butter 125g lard 500g flour 100ml water
Cut the lard and butter into small cubes, add to flour in a big bowl and rub together until combined. Slowly add the water until thoroughly mixed and is a dough like consistency. Rest in the fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out pastry to ½ cm thick + line our tart case
Ollie and the Christmas Jumper
He started intensive treatment in the Birmingham Children's Hospital in September and has been possibly the bravest lad you could ever have the privilege to know.
So on 12, 13 and 14 December we are helping Ollie and his sister Kira raise money for the people that are helping Ollie battle this terrible disease.
All you have to do is come in for dinner or Sunday lunch wearing your very finest Christmas jumper - that's right, knitted reindeer and everything - and donate anything from £1 upwards to Ollie's fund. Alternatively you can donate through JustGiving at www.justgiving.com/Kira-Swannell.

MP presents cheques to local health charities after fundraising cycle ride
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb recently presented a cheque to Cromer Hospital following his 100 mile fundraising bike ride in September. The money raised was put towards the purchasing of a new ophthalmology laser, nabling more patients to receive specialist eye treatment locally.
Norman Lamb said “It is a pleasure to be able to present cheques to the charities and hospitals we raised money for in September. It was good that we were able to support the acquisition of the new laser for Cromer Hospital which will provide new ophthalmological services for North Norfolk residents. Seeing the money put to good use makes everyone’s effort seem absolutely worthwhile”.
Norman Lamb also visited other hospitals and charities across the constituency to present
their cheques with two other presentations at Kelling Hospital and at Wells.
Iain MacKechnie Jarvis, Chair of Wells Community Hospital Trust, said ‘We are so delighted that Norman Lamb included us in the charities he was supporting on his sponsored cycle ride. The money he has raised for us will go towards the purchase of a new renal dialysis machine for our Renal Unit which provides vital holiday respite treatment for those needing regular renal dialysis."
Over 100 sponsorship cheques have been received and further donations have been made online. The total of donations received will be worth over £7,200 to local charities.
Norman Lamb explained “We are very fortunate to have these wonderful services here in North Norfolk and I was pleased to be able to do my bit to support them. A total of £7200 is a really fantastic sum and I am incredibly grateful to all those who donated over the past weeks”.

Bewilderwood Author Opens New Library
Tom Blofeld, author of the Bewilderwood series of books visited North Walsham Junior School on Thursday 20 November to officially open the new library. He met Year 6 pupils and enjoyed a tour of the school.
He helped Mildred the Crocklebog to cut the ribbon and shared the specially-baked cake with the children. The library was built over the summer holidays by converting some existing rooms to improve and develop accommodation for the pupils, who are all avid readers of children's books.
Clare Fletcher, Executive Headteacher said "It was really special to have such a well-respected author to attend our grand opening. The children were so excited to meet him! He was very gracious and signed autographs for them, as well as signing our newly illustrated wall! The ability to read well is an important skill so it is brilliant that we now have a beautiful space to use to promote and encourage a lifelong love of reading".

Mundesley Village Cinema Armistice Day Remembrance
Mundesley Village Cinema joined in the Armistice Day remembrance with the screening of Sir Richard Attenborough’s brilliant musical satire of WW1 events “Oh, What a Lovely War”. So moving was the film in capturing the wanton loss of life that the audience unusually fell silent at the film’s closing. As people left the hall, they all remarked on how exceptional the film was and how creative Attenborough was in using poppies (not blood) to depict death and dying.
Derek Sidaway and Robert Ovenden
The film was attended by Mundesley Section of the Royal British Legion. Representatives, Derek Sidaway and Robert Ovenden (pictured), would like to thank the audience for their donations to the Royal British Legion totalling £46.53.

Northrepps History in The Golden Age
Northrepps in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is brought to life in a new book, The Golden Age, by Graham Ferguson who until recently lived in The Old Foundry. Based on the craft skills of John Golden and his father and grandfather, the book draws on villagers' memories as well as more formal archive sources. The broad range of topics includes foundry work, the Gallas plough, undertaker duties and the local church. As it happens, The Golden Age has recently been celebrated as Poppyland Publishing's 100th book. The book may be obtained from Jarrold's or Poppyland Publishing.

Pub campaigners have welcomed a new cross-party clause to the Small Business Bill which offer new protections for local publicans against the predatory practices of large pub owning companies (known as pubcos). Following a report into the industry by the cross-party BIS Select Committee in 2010, the Labour Party has campaigned alongside a broad coalition of groups in the industry – including the Federation of Small Businesses, the Forum of Private Business, and CAMRA – to call for greater protection for local pubs and put a stop to unfair treatment and restrictive practices by pubcos. The government promised to regulate pubcos in the Small Business Bill, debated in Parliament last month, but these fell some way short of Labour's plans and campaigners' demands. Labour therefore supported a cross-party clause to strengthen the Bill which was passed in November. However the North Norfolk Labour Party has expressed disappointment that local MP Norman Lamb voted against it - especially as a number of pubs in the constituency have suffered under the action of some pubcos. Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "I am delighted that the House of Commons has supported this motion which will give a boost to local pubs if implemented. Now ministers must act quickly to ensure there is a proper statutory code with a free-oftie option to protect local pubs, and must not ignore this important vote. It is a shame that Norman Lamb did not support this bill when many of his colleagues defied the whip, but if elected in May I will continue to fight for local pubs in North Norfolk which are such an important asset in the community."
British jobs market surging forwards – Norman Lamb
Britain’s economy has created a new job every minute of every working day with Liberal Democrats in Government, Norman Lamb has said. The North Norfolk MP was responding to news that unemployment fell by 115,000 in the last quarter. Between July and September unemployment dropped to 1.96 million - the 18th consecutive quarterly fall. Office of National Statistics figures also show earnings, excluding bonuses, rose by 1.3% in the year to September, ahead of the 1.2% Consumer Prices Index inflation rate. Employment now stands at a record high of 30.8 million, with 1.7 million new jobs created since the Liberal Democrats entered Government. Norman Lamb said, “The British jobs market is surging forwards: figures show the economy has created over 1.7 million new jobs with the Liberal Democrats in Government since 2010. On average, that’s a new job created every minute of every working day. Here in North Norfolk the numbers claiming unemployment support have fallen from 1,382 in 2010 to 583 today. But these welcome figures are so much more than mere numbers. Every job created helps someone build or secure a livelihood. This, combined with the news that wages excluding bonuses - are now rising faster than inflation, is real progress in building the stronger economy and fairer society that we aspire to. However much this is good news, we cannot ever be complacent. For those who remain unemployed we need to do all we can to help get them back into work.”

Dear Margaret,
Some of your readers may have been a little confused by comparing and contrasting the pieces about Thorpe Market Church in 8 November edition.
I corresponded with Christine Wood about the Hazel Grove at the back of Thorpe Market churchyard at some length, as mentioned in her letter. Johanne Bowles has not been in touch with me about her concerns. However, I can report that the unpaid work unit from the probation service has undertaken two full days of works in the grove, getting the whole area back to a tidy state.
The works included the removal of hugely overgrown buddleias and also the coppicing of the Hazel trees themselves, which was overdue by some years - so it is not quite right to suggest that lack of maintenance has only been a problem for a short period. That said, the sudden departure of the previous team of volunteers last year did leave me with something of a challenge when I took over as Churchwarden in April this year.
As I know from my weekday work with five hundred churches in London, volunteer succession is one of the key challenges facing the Church of England at the moment. Not managing that process effectively can undo years of hard work very quickly, particularly in situations like ours where volunteers leave suddenly, with no-one in place to succeed them.
Happily, since an appeal over the summer, we now have several new volunteers who have offered their services in the churchyard at Thorpe Market, most of whom have long-term connections with the village. Also, the former churchyard maintenance plan, successful over many years, has been reinstated.
I am very mindful that we need to ensure the agreed maintenance plan is not again usurped, and we are planning to bring some legal force to it through the church's Faculty system, which I hope will give Christine Wood and others confidence that the Hazel Grove will be there for them in the future, as the place it used to be.
Next year we are looking forward to hosting a Diocese of Norwich event about churchyard maintenance, as well as a re-dedication service for the Hazel Grove itself. We will advertise both of these nearer the time.

HAYES + STORR ELDERLY CLIENT SERVICES Written by Fiona Hewitt – Director at Hayes + Storr
North Norfolk is a great place to live and it is not surprising that many people choose to retire here. Its relative remoteness is part of its charm, but also has occasional drawbacks, particularly if friends and family are far away at times when you need extra help.
At Hayes + Storr we have a large Private Client department, covering all aspects of ‘private client’ law, including wills and probate, powers of attorney and Court of Protection applications, tax, trusts and claims against estates. We encourage all our clients to have a valid will in place, as well as Lasting Powers of Attorney to deal with the possibility that you may not be able to deal with your own affairs in the future. As people get older, it becomes increasingly important to make sure that all their legal affairs are up to date.
However, we know that in many cases, older people have other practical concerns which also need to be addressed. An important part of our Private Client department is our ‘Elderly Client’ team, consisting not only of specialists in the law, but also a pastoral visitor and care assessor, a benefits adviser, and a number of administrative assistants. As well as legal advice we can assist you in many other ways, so if you have no friends or family in the area
with the time or ability to help, our aim is to ‘fill the gap’ for you.
For example, you might need us to: • find a carer, cleaner, gardener or handyman for you • find someone to take you shopping • help you to manage your bank accounts and bills • arrange for your pets to be looked after if you need to go into hospital • advise you on your entitlement to care and benefits • help you find suitable residential care and assist with the practicalities of moving.
Where appropriate we will also refer you to other organisations who can give you help and support. a If you think we may be
able to help, we would be happy to see you at one of our six offices, or arrange a home visit to come and meet you.

Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. If you require advice on this matter please contact our Private Client Team here at Hayes + Storr on 01692 503081. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our office or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Festive Jazz
The success of Jazz at The Goat Inn, located in the Hamlet of Skeyton, has surpassed all expectations. It started as a “one off” event to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee in 2012 and has developed into one of Norfolk’s most popular traditional jazz venues with the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band playing on the first Sunday of every month. The festive season will be no exception with events on 7 December and 4 January from 1.30pm. There is no charge for admission and you can just “drop in” for a drink or eat in the restaurant or garden room, where the band plays .If you would like a table for lunch, however, it will be essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.
The dates will be an opportunity for Liz Underdown (bass) to “get her feet under the table”. Liz is no stranger to the audience at The Goat but she has recently taken over on a regular basis at the heart of the band. She gained her BA Hons in music from Exeter

We are also pleased to let you know that Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) has been well received and continues on Sunday 14 December when the Tom Harris Trio will be making the audience feel at home playing new takes on old favourites and some less well-known material.
Tom developed his musical prowess at school. He graduated from the Norwich Student Jazz Orchestra, and, over the last fifteen years, has developed a reputation as a top-class local musician. Playing with Tom will be Owen Morgan (bass) and Neil Kane (drums).

North Walsham Inner Wheel Club
On Monday 10 November we were treated to a most interesting talk by Nancy Heywood about ‘The Tower’. Most local people know about the great problems that St Nicholas’ Church has had with its crumbling tower. Nancy, as one of the Church Wardens, has had the onerous task, with others of course, of raising £210,000 to make it safe! We were shown many pictures of the deterioration and the work in progress.
Our ancient Church was first built in Saxon times and added to in the medieval era. It became the largest ‘wool’ Church in Norfolk and the tallest, 147 feet, after a spire was added to ‘outdo’ the height of Cromer’s Church!. Only the Cathedral was taller.
There were two falls from the tower, one in 1724 after a special Fayre was held in the town, during which the Church’s six bells were rung continuously. Then in 1823 there were heavy gales and more of the Tower descended.
There have been many efforts to raise money for the Tower’s restoration. In 1900 a guide was sold to raise funds and some ‘patching’ was done. Now it is serious. In September 2011 a stone fell onto a builder. No real damage was done, but it proved all was not well.
It cost £45,000 to put up the scaffolding to assess the damage. This was in addition to the £210,000 needed to do the work necessary to make the Tower safe. With a great deal of hard work from many people, but especially our Church Wardens, there is now only a shortfall of £7,000 from the original assessment. Work is progressing and we are confident that this will be raised.
NNDC Celebrates 10 years relationship with Holt Day Centre volunteers North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is celebrating ten years of working together successfully with volunteers from Holt Day Centre at Green Flag award-winning Holt Country Park.
For the last ten years, NNDC’s Countryside Rangers have been joined by volunteers from Holt Day Centre to undertake practical conservation work including building a sensory garden, making butterfly habitats, planting trees, gardening and creating habitats for mini beasts and amphibians.
Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “Many of the projects that have been completed at Holt Country Park could not have been done so without the help of the volunteers from Holt Day Centre.

Refreshments were served while Nancy answered questions and after a short business meeting and the Inner Wheel toast, the meeting closed.
An Addendum must be added that St Nicholas’ Church was, only last month, given a very generous donation of £5,000, to complete the Tower Fundraising efforts.
Our next meeting will be on 8 December at 7.30 pm at Park Farm, Witton. Stella Hunter - Club Correspondent

Together with our Countryside Rangers, they have formed an enduring partnership that I hope will continue for many more years to come.
“The volunteers have made a significant contribution to improving the natural environment at Holt Country Park while building confidence and self-esteem and developing strong working relationships with the Rangers” John Orris, Holt Day Centre Supervisor, added “I’ve been bringing groups of volunteers to Holt Country Park for the last ten years and have witnessed the pleasure and the satisfaction they’ve gained from carrying out many different tasks, including the recent construction of the popular sensory garden.
“I am extremely proud of the attitude of the Holt Day Centre members and their positive contribution to the Park. I would also like to pay tribute to the Rangers who have worked with us so successfully. Their patience and skills and the cheerful manner in which they work really motivates the members who thoroughly enjoy their time at the Park.”
Shrubs and a selection of gardening tools were presented to John Orris and the Holt Day Centre members by Cllr. Williams at an event held at Holt Country Park on Wednesday 19 November in recognition of the successful ten-year partnership.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHRISTMAS CACTUS
The plant we normally see offered for sale at this time of the year called the Christmas Cactus is part of the genus Schlumbergia and is one of six species found in the coastal mountains of South America.
The plants grow on trees or rocks in habitats which are generally shady with high humidity. Most of the species have stems which resemble leaf-like pads joined one to the other and flowers which appear from aereoles at the joints and tips of the stems. This genus also contains other popular plants such as Thanksgiving Cactus, Crab Cactus and Holiday Cactus. Confusingly the Easter or Whitsun Cactus is placed in a separate genus (Hatiora).
It is believed that Schlumbergias have been in cultivation in Europe since 1818 and due to cross breeding there are now hundreds of varieties. The aim of breeders was to produce
plants which grow strongly, were upright at the point of sale rather than pendulous, had many flowers or buds, and were adapted to living as house plants. Much effort has also produced a wide range of flower colours including yellow. Despite all the confusion over names and botanical classification the following general advice should help you care for any plant you are given as a present or allow you to continue to look after that straggly specimen that granny passed on to you
• Growing medium - Free-draining, humusrich, somewhat acid growing media are used for the commercial production, such as a mixture of peat or leaf mould and an inert material such as grit or sharp sand. A standard cactus compost or John Innes No.2 with added leaf mould or grit will help to improve drainage. Re-pot once a year (or at least every two years) to maintain healthy growth. This can be done at the end of March which is the beginning of the growing season.

• Light - They can be damaged by exposure to more than small amounts of sunlight. Too much light causes stems to take on a reddish colour; however, very low light levels will prevent flowering. Day length is important to cause flower buds to form and the ideal is said to be a period of about 8 days with 16 hours of darkness at 16 degrees.
• Propagation - Use short pieces of stem, one to three segments long, twisted off rather than cut. Cuttings are allowed to dry for 1-7 days, forming a callus at the broken end, and then rooted in an open growing medium. Temperatures between 21 and 27 degrees centigrade in long day/short night conditions speed rooting
• Pests and diseases - These plants are generally free from trouble apart from aphids and mealy bugs. Also look out for rotting of stems and leaves. There are chemical treatments.
Looking forward to next summer these cacti • Watering - They are more tolerant of can be placed outside as this will help them drought than many house plants, but can be ripen new growth and encourage flowering but damaged by both under- and over-watering. you will need to protect them from slugs! First seal pups of the season born at Blakeney Point
The first seal pups were born on Blakeney Point last month, marking the start of a breeding season that could see the National Trust nature reserve become England’s biggest colony of Grey Seals.
Blakeney Point, on the north Norfolk coast, has become famous for its breeding Grey Seal colony in recent years. Since 2001, when 25 pups were born, numbers have increased each year. Last winter, 1,566 pups were born, making Blakeney Point the third largest Grey Seal colony in England.
With numbers of pups born increasing by around 25% each year, Blakeney Point could become England’s biggest colony this year. A couple of weeks into the 2014 season and there are already significantly more pups than last year. By Thursday 13 November, 265 pups had been counted, 63 more than by the same date last year.

perfect breeding site for Grey Seals.
Ajay Tegala, a National Trust ranger who lives on Blakeney Point, said “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of Grey Seal pups being born at Blakeney Point in recent years. It is great news and a nice reward for all the effort the National Trust team put into caring for the Point, ensuring it is a healthy environment for these beautiful animals.”
Pup survival rates are high. With lots of space and no natural predators, Blakeney Point is a
“Grey Seal pups are born on land, with white coats,” added Ajay. “They are fed on their mother’s rich milk for up to three weeks. In this time, they triple in size and shed their white fur. The mother then leaves the pup to fend for itself. Mating takes place soon after pupping. Male seals, bulls, fight for territories and the dominant ones will mate with several females. This makes the colony a dramatic, but dangerous place.”
Blakeney Point is part of Blakeney National Nature Reserve, where the Ranger team protect and monitor the seal colony. For the safety of seals and visitors, the western-most mile of beach and dunes on the Point are fenced off during the breeding season, which runs from 1 November to 1 February. Pups are counted and taken to the RSPCA animal hospital if seriously ill or injured.

Norwich Eating Disorder Charity Scoops ‘Team of the Year’ Award
Beat – the UK’s leading eating disorder charity and the only national charity based in Norwich – were proudly named ‘Team of the Year’ at last month’s Eastern Daily Press Stars of Norfolk Awards. Now in its 25th anniversary year, the charity supports people affected by eating disorders and their families, through a range of face-to-face, online and helpline support.
Eating disorders affect an estimated 1.6 million people in the UK alone. With a consistently strong media and online presence, Beat campaigns to improve understanding, access to treatment, and to change the way people think about eating disorders – most recently encouraging men with eating disorders to speak up and seek support with its “Beat The Silence” campaign.
Accepting the award, Beat staff acknowledged the essential contribution of more than 1500 volunteers who devote their time to Beat’s helplines, support groups and online services, fundraising, research or speaking publicly about their personal experiences. Their commitment enables Beat to maintain a national presence.
In Norfolk, Beat has a long-standing partnership with Norfolk Community Eating Disorders Service, providing monthly support groups at the Charing Cross Centre in Norwich, a dedicated Norfolk helpline, and eating disorders awareness training for GPs. More recently Beat extended its remit to provide support groups for individuals who overeat for emotional reasons, with funding provided by the Department of Health. Emotional Overeating Support Groups run once a month at separate locations in Norwich and Great Yarmouth. Full details of our local and national support can be found on the Beat website www.b-eat.co.uk.
team puts into the work we do. It is particularly special as Beat grew up from a local Norfolk based charity to become not only a national charity, but also the leading eating disorder charity in the UK, and we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary year this year. This award has given every member a great sense of achievement, and we thank you for selecting us.”
Lorna Garner, Chief Operating Officer for Beat, commented “This a wonderful acknowledgement of the commitment, energy and drive that all the Beat

Campaign to save Mental Health Services
We in the Campaign to save Mental Health Services in Norfolk and Suffolk find it hard to stomach Norman Lamb’s continuous efforts to present himself as the champion of the mentally ill. He has been a Health Minister and Secretary of State with special responsibility for social care and mental health for 4 years now. Under his watch funding for mental health has actually fallen for the first time for many years creating a national crisis in the provision of acute psychiatric care (over 1700 beds have been lost nationally).
In Norfolk and Suffolk, the so-called Nicholson challenge has meant a cut of £40 million over the last 4 years leading to the decimation of community care for the most vulnerable, the abolition of community mental health nurses who were attached to GP surgeries, the closure of specialist assertive outreach teams which provided intensive support and monitoring of the most severely mentally ill, the loss of the Mental Health Homeless Team in Norwich, and the loss of over 120 beds in Norfolk and Suffolk. Crisis Teams – one of Norman Lamb’s pet subjects – have also been badly hit by downgrading of staff and the loss of experienced practitioners. Currently, the main provider of mental health services, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), is in a precarious financial state and because of concerns about the standard of care has just been subject to an intensive inspection by the CQC. At any one time if any of your readers requires an urgent admission to psychiatric hospital it is unlikely that this will be to a local hospital. Last week there were 48 patients from Norfolk scattered across the country in hospitals in places as far away as Darlington and Weston-super-mare (see our attached Map of Shame).Other patients experience serious delays before they can be admitted and some have had to be held illegally in police custody until a bed can be found. Despite this dire situation NSFT are now facing a further 5 years of cost-saving (the 1.8% deflator) which will mean a further £40 million of cuts over the next 5 years and even more redundancies and loss of services.
Norman Lamb is fully aware of these problems because we have let him know consistently the full extent of the crisis, and to be fair to Mr Lamb he is very supportive of individuals who come to him for help, and therefore has a good grasp of the situation on the ground. However, he claims he is helpless to do anything about the funding crisis because NHS England are independent of government, He says he campaigns on behalf of mental health and now has a petition for the future funding of the NHS. But is he not a Minister in the current Government? Why does he need to campaign against himself? He and his fellow MPs voted for the Health and Social Care Bill which created our current system of funding. What is the point of voting for Mr Lamb if even as a Health Minister he is helpless? The Liberal Democrats are once again making promises about the future funding of mental health services, but we remember Clegg’s record on tuition fees. If you would like to support the Campaign please visit our website http//norfolksuffolkmentalhealthcrisis.org.uk/ or contact us on 01263 825967. We are holding an anniversary open meeting on 27/11/14 at 7.30 pm Vauxhall Centre, Norwich, where we will be debating the above issues and planning the next steps in our campaign. ALL WELCOME. Terry Skyrme, on behalf of the Campaign to Save Mental Health Services in N&S.

Mental Health Issues - Norman Lamb Responds
There has always been an institutional bias against mental health in our NHS, and in society. When the last government legislated for waiting time standards in physical health, they left out mental health. When they introduced a right to patient choice for hospital treatment, they left out mental health. And when they set up “Payment by Results” to tackle long waiting lists, Labour left out mental health. This has inevitably meant that, when money is tight, mental health loses out in local spending decisions.
As health minister, I have been determined to tackle this. We have legislated to be clear that mental health must have complete equality with physical health in the NHS. In April this year we extended the right of choice to include mental health treatment. And at the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow last month, we announced from next year the first waiting time standards for mental health too, so most patients will be guaranteed access to talking therapies in as little as six weeks from referral. We will also introduce a new standard next year to start treatment within two weeks of a first episode of psychosis.
At the same time as we announced these new standards, we published a five year vision for the introduction of comprehensive access and waiting time standards across mental health. The aim is to achieve real equality for those suffering mental ill health. These announcements were enthusiastically welcomed by charities nationally. It was described as a watershed moment.
We are also tackling the unacceptable inequality in mental health crisis care: Norfolk recently signed up to the “Crisis Care Concordat”, which sets clear national standards for emergency treatment. And in 2015/16 we are investing £30m extra in liaison psychiatry to make sure that psychiatric help is available in A and E departments.
But I am far from complacent: the fact is that in much of the country mental health services are still nowhere near good enough. In particular services for young people are sometimes completely unacceptable. I launched a Task Force earlier this year to look at how we can modernise services, improving access and ending the current “cliff-edge” when people move from under-18 to adult services. And as part of my current campaign (www.normanlamb.org.uk) to secure extra funding for the NHS next year, I am hoping we can secure investment to start delivering the improvements to young people’s services we desperately need.
North Norfolk MP recognised nationally for work on mental health
This week North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has been recognised by two organisations for his work on mental health.
Norman attended a ceremony with the Political Studies Association to accept their annual award for "Best use of evidence in policy making", recognising his work in driving reform of mental health services that have been neglected for far too long.
The judges for the PSA award said, “Norman Lamb was the unanimous winner of this award for his outstanding work on mental health. His work with the Royal College of Nursing, Skills for Health and Skills for Care to develop new guidance for professionals as well as workforce training guidelines must also be strongly commended”.
The judges also praised Lamb for his launch of Positive and Safe, a two-year programme to end the deliberate use of face-down restraint in all health and care settings.
Norman Lamb said, “It is a real honour to have been recognised by the Political Studies Association and Nuffield College for my work on mental health, and more generally. Mental health is an area that has been neglected for far too long and I am determined to ensure patients can access the support they need.”

Christmas at The Atrium – oh yes it is!
Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without a visit to the Atrium theatre’s annual show. Oh no it wouldn’t!
This year’s show, which promises to be great for families and audiences of all ages, is based on the beloved fairytale of Beauty and the Beast. With adventure, magic and romance the show will take us to a land where a prince has been be-spelled by an evil witch, where only true love can break the spell.
The show has professional actors taking the lead roles, with Krissi Jae Kitson playing Beauty, Joseph Ballard playing the beast and Roy Gould playing Walter, who is Beauty’s father. They are supported by talented young actors Paige Miller as the fairy and Colin Cushion, who will be playing a different comedy cameo role. The Atrium’s drama club will be taking part as the children of the enchanted village who will help Beauty defeat the witch.
Joseph Ballard, who has written and also directs the show said “Christmas is a
wonderful opportunity to come and support your local theatre. With audience interaction, foot-tapping songs and the gags, we promise an enchanting show that has been made in and for North Walsham.”
The show runs Thursday 11 to Saturday 13 December, with four shows at different times. Tickets are priced at £9 adults, £6 children and concessions. There’s also a family ticket deal (for four people) of £27. There’s still chance to make the most of group booking discounts too.
The Atrium Theatre will also be hosting Christmas Stories and Sing-a-long on Friday 19 December at 7.30pm all tickets are £6 for a night of well-known seasonal songs, stories and a good dose of laughter! Featuring some of the cast of Beauty and the Beast and guest performers, the evening will glide you much further into the Christmas spirit with some good old-fashioned entertainment.
Sarah wins Maids Head Hotel Photography Competition
Recently the Maids Head Hotel held a competition in conjunction with the EDP’s Iwitness24, the theme of which was ‘Historical Norwich’. Sarah Toon, a member of North Walsham Photographic Group, was one of the 10 winners with her sensational picture of light reflected through the new stained glass windows in the North Aisle in Norwich Cathedral.
As an independent charity, Arts North Norfolk is calling upon local audiences to make the most of its entertainments programme as audiences support the charity’s
development and ongoing work in the town.
To find out more about what’s on or book tickets in advance, check out the organisation’s website at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org, call 01692 218060, email info@artsnorthnorfolk.org or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham. No. 1 is open Wednesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 1.30pm.
In an act of great ingenuity, all the winning pictures have been enlarged, waterproofed and inserted into the shower and bath panels in the newly refurbished bathrooms of the hotel, as demonstrated in the photograph. In addition, Sarah was awarded a complimentary dinner, bed and breakfast stay in the room with her picture displayed.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
I am happy to report that Leo came through his operation and when I saw him that evening he was full of life and raring to go. This lovely little kitten has been reserved and will be going to his new home as soon as he is given a clean bill of health and had his first vaccination. Great news also on Abi and Edd, two of the other kittens mentioned last time, as they will have left for their new home when you read this. Little Edd in particular stole our hearts as he is such a loving kitten and full of character. Sadly, not all good news though as Itzy, one of the little kittens caught in September, had to be put sleep on our vet’s recommendation as he had a serious health problem. Despite the number of kittens in care we are still sad to lose even one.
The lady we thought might be able to offer our old cat Aggie a home was not able to do so. As Aggie may have renal problems we are monitoring her health at the moment to check how serious this is. With the right medication and lots of loving care this should not be a problem for this old cat and she is now safe and well with a nice bed to sleep on.
Lepto4 Vaccination
Cats with renal problems can survive for years, as I know from personal experience.
Although recent articles have mostly been about the numbers of kittens we have had this year (and yes, they still continue to arrive, with another 10 in care since the last article), we have recently re-homed several of the older cats who had been with us some time. Cats like Leo 8 year old Fernie who came in because he was stressed living in a multi cat household, Billie and Betsie (both 6 years old) who had been abandoned in a block of flats, and Sir Andrew (12 years) and Michael (5 years) also abandoned, but this time because their owners now had a dog.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
January 2015 we will be starting a new programme to include the new Lepto4 vaccination. Previous vaccines were only able to protect dogs against two known strains of the disease but new strains of the infection, not covered by conventional vaccines, are now being seen. The new vaccine will protect dogs against four strains of Leptospirosis giving a much broader defence against the rise if this potentially fatal disease.
In
Whether your dog is
Small
or
Big
The vaccine will be given to ALL dogs seen for vaccination from 2nd January 2015, this will require an initial course of 2 vaccinations so if your dog is only in for its routine booster you will need to come back in 4 weeks for another injection. This second injection will be FREE OF CHARGE and is essential to maintain cover for your dog. The timing of this second vaccine is important so please make sure you attend both the appointments given to you. Puppies will automatically be started on the new vaccine and will also require a course of 2 vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by annual booster vaccinations thereafter.

Over half term, North Walsham Infant, Nursery and Junior school was the victim of senseless vandalism by some individuals on site.
We would like to express our thanks to all of you in the wider community for your support and messages of concern. The offers of help have flooded in and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by so many. It has been truly uplifting to see the parents and community come together in force to support the school, and to help clear up the destruction.
Thank you all.
Lyn, Pam L, Andrea and Pam C would like to say a BIG THANK YOU To all the members and the families of About With Friends who have made our jobs worthwhile. To the members of our lunch clubs who have supported us over the last 4½ years in EVERYTHING we have done. To the local businesses we have had the pleasure of working with and serving. To our wonderful volunteers who have given so generously of their time. The pleasure has all been ours, but the time has come for us to move on from AWF and with some sadness we say goodbye for now and wish you all the very best in the future.

North Walsham Scouts win ÂŁ3000 in Lloyds Bank competition
The 1st North Walsham Scout Group has been awarded first place and a whopping ÂŁ3000 from Lloyds Bank.
As a purely voluntary group, we were delighted to have got through to the Lloyds Bank Community Fund final – The Public Vote. Our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers rose to the challenge and canvassed their friends, neighbours and family for votes. Our parents took the vote to their work, onto the streets of North Walsham and our scout Leaders got the word out too.
I would like to say a huge ‘thank-you’ to everyone who took part, every vote has made a massive difference to our scout group and the community in North Walsham.
Have you ever thought about helping out or becoming a scout leader? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.

The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to 1,400 local good causes in 350 communities.
We were presented the cheque from Claire Turner and Mark Moses from Lloyds Bank and we have used the money to buy brand new patrol tents for the children at the group. The group looks after well over 100 young people from North Walsham and the surrounding area, from Beavers at aged 6, through to Cubs from age 8, then at 10 ½ years old they move into Scouts. We also have an Explorer Section from age 14 to 18 who share our facilities and they have also embraced the competition with enthusiasm.

North Walsham Times 460 December 6th 2014
Norman Lamb secures talks to find a solution for North Norfolk coast Following the impact of the North Sea tidal surge in December 2013, North Norfolk District Council is holding talks with Bacton Terminal Complex operators (BTC) to consider what actions are needed to secure the nationally important asset.
25% of Britain’s national gas supply enters the country through the gas pipelines at Bacton. The operators of the Bacton Terminal Complex have jointly worked with NNDC over many years regarding the management of erosion risk to the terminal. The 2013 surge caused new cliff losses and the BTC operators need to ensure that any further erosion is managed to prevent this nationally important infrastructure being put at risk.
Concerns were raised earlier this year with North Norfolk MP, Norman Lamb and NNDC. The terminal operators had identified the requirement to pursue an integrated approach which could involve shared public and private funding to manage coastal erosion in the local vicinity.
Norman Lamb therefore co-ordinated a meeting at Parliament between Energy Secretary, Ed Davey MP, Coastal Minister, Dan Rogerson MP and senior figures from the Environment Agency, NNDC and the BTC operators. It was agreed at the meeting that the preferred approach to protect the terminal at Bacton would be to link it to wider works to ensure that other communities are not put at risk. These plans are complex and require numerous stakeholder approvals and involvement.
Key organisations will report to Ministers at another meeting due to take place early next year to ensure that progress is made on this important issue. NNDC and the BTC operators are currently carrying out an investigation in to the key considerations and options which will then help to form a proposed approach. The investigation will need to consider coastal protection options alongside alternatives such as enabling infrastructure and communities to adapt to
A Musical Festive Treat!
The Cromer Orchestra will be performing a selection of popular festive music at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots) on Thursday 11 December at 7.30pm. The programme will include Christmas favourites, traditional carols and a special guest appearance by Southrepps based Cantamus Choir, singing music by John Rutter and John Taverner. This will be the first time that the orchestra and choir have performed together, so come along and show your support for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults/£2.50 for under 18s and include

a changing coastline. The proposed technical solution will be discussed with the relevant local communities.
Norman Lamb MP commented “I was determined to make sure that this meeting took place so that ministers could understand the need for local organisations to work together to protect the coastal communities alongside the Bacton Terminal. “Dan Rogerson, the Lib Dem Environment Minister, very recently visited Walcott and really understands the challenges we face. I am pleased that we were able to agree a way forward, and I will continue to monitor progress closely over the coming months to make sure that we keep up the momentum.” NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Coastal, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said “Such an opportunity to jointly work with communities, private companies and central government is hugely positive and will provide the best opportunity for progress and a unified way forward.”
refreshments. Tickets are either available on the door, or in advance from Cromer Tourist Information Centre or Kirkhams Hardware store.
New players are always welcome to join the orchestra, particularly string and brass players. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at The Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand starting at 7pm. For more details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.
Cantamus are a mixed voice, non-auditioned choir who rehearse in Southrepps church on a Thursday evening from 7.30-9.30 under the direction of David Ballard. The choir is always looking to recruit new singers, particularly in the alto, tenor and bass sections; for further details please email davidballard@hotmail.co.uk

North Walsham Table Tennis Tense Cup Win for Backhanders
The focus in the Star Paving North Norfolk League switched to the second round matches in the Knockout Doubles Cup. At North Walsham Sports Centre, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Paul Warner and Whil De Neve with Elliott and Halliday winning the opener against Wilson and De Neve 15-13, 10-12, 7-11, 12-10, 11-8. The next two battles were both won in straight and split between the two teams before Price and Halliday came back from two sets down against Wilson and De Neve to move NWSCB 3-1 ahead, however a win in straight for Wilson and Warner pegged the lead back. Very tense matches with not that many rallies were the order of the day throughout the contest as Warner and De Neve levelled the tie with an 11-8, 8-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-4 victory against Elliott and Price. Wilson and Warner moved Backhanders a win away from a quarter-final berth with another win in five against Price and Halliday and Backhander’s 5-3 victory was
sealed by Wilson and De Neve who defeated Elliott and Price 10-12, 11-6, 13-11, 7-11, 13-11.
The Cup action at Antingham saw NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Howard Lupton host Gresham’s School B’s Charlie Williamson, Tom Sheridan and Bryan Lee. Sheridan returned serve very well through the contest and with Williamson took the first set of the night against Lupton and Beane; however no more sets were dropped during NWSCA’s 5-0 win. NWSCD also progressed to the quarter-finals after the team of Ray Howe, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone dropped just two sets during their 6-0 win away to Barracudas. The same NWSCD also had a match in the Premier division away to Gresham’s School A’s Ian Darricott, Seamus Chambers and reigning North Norfolk Champion Robin Thaxter who won the opener in four against Howe. Stone took a set from both Chambers and Darricott while a 4-0 lead in the decider and some good counter-attack helped Chambers get past Kirkup in five – despite the Walsham player at one point POOL 1 POOL 2 hitting the drop-shot Water too cold Water just right of the season!
