Statement from North Walsham Town Council on the Council Tax Precept and proposed sale of the New Road office to JD Wetherspoon At its meeting on Tuesday 27 January, North Walsham Town Council set its Council Tax precept for 2015/16 at £189,323 - this includes a government grant of £19,275 and equates to £46.68 per household, an increase of £0.59 or 1.28% over the 2014/15 amount.

This followed discussion of North Norfolk District Council's proposal to sell the Town Council's current New Road base to JD Wetherspoon for around £350,000. The Council was very clear that it was not opposed to JD Wetherspoon coming to the town. There was, however, disappointment at NNDC's stance that the money received would not be made available to create a community hub - in which the Town Council and other local organisations could base themselves - in the town as North Walsham "had already received significant benefit from District

Council money". It was argued that NNDC, which is sitting on a £20 million capital reserve, should not be allowed to sell a town asset and then make residents pay for a replacement when it clearly does not need the money from the sale.

Statement from North Walsham Town Council on the Council Tax Precept and proposed sale of the New Road office to JD Wetherspoon Continued from front cover...

The Town Council was also disappointed at NNDC's apparent rush to sell prior to the May election, and to deliver vacant possession to the prospective buyer as soon as possible, when no planning application had been submitted. It had become apparent from legal advice received by the Town Council earlier in the afternoon that NNDC may be acting ultra vires in seeking to sell the New Road site before agreement is reached between the two authorities. Negotiations between the two authorities are set to continue once the Town Council has received further legal advice.

The lack of certainty over the legally-independent planning process, and the early stage and complexity of negotiations with NNDC, meant that the Town Council could not at this time justify a significant increase to its Council Tax Precept for the purchase or long term rental of property it may not need. It was agreed instead that the small increase agreed, together with the Council's reserve fund, should provide sufficient financial cover for any requirements that may arise by the end of 2015, when it is currently expected to vacate the New Road offices.

The North Walsham Council Tax precept, the town's element of the household Council Tax bill issued by NNDC, remains one of the lowest among towns in the district.

We are a voluntary group offering advice and support to people who have liver disease. We organise social events, talks by Consultants and other hospital staff, and have a very active role in fundraising for amenities and equipment for patients.

Liver disease does not receive the same publicity and financial support as other medical conditions and there is less awareness of the impact it has on people’s lives. That is why we are committed to making a difference for people with a liver disease, who will probably need ongoing care.

If you would like our help or to join our group, please telephone 01362 695624

CAN YOU HELP US?

We are fundraising for a portable Fibroscan machine, equipment that will be used at the Norfolk and Norwich and Cromer Hospitals. It will cost £27,000. It is a big cost … but it will make a huge difference.

The Fibroscan uses a technique similar to ultrasound to help doctors assess the extent of any liver damage in people with abnormal blood tests, to monitor and measure liver disease, and to anticipate possible complications.

The scan is quick and painless, performed in clinic, with no need for sedation or anaesthetic. Patients can leave hospital immediately afterwards. Doctors receive the scan results instantaneously.

Delays in diagnosis and treatment can result in a liver condition deteriorating and needing a higher level of medical attention. This is why the Fibroscan is so important.

If you could help, please send a cheque to Paul Bond, 19 The Lizard, Wymondham, NORFOLK NR18 9BH for ‘The Friends of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’, marked on reverse ‘Fibroscan Appeal’ or go to our ukvirginmoneygiving.com online giving page and search for the Norfolk and Norwich Liver Group Thank You! Binham Blue Stuffed Chicken Breast with a Green Been Salad

Although we still seem to be in the grip of a long, cold winter, the snowdrops are out and the Grove is re-open after a refurbishment in January. We’ve been overwhelmed with demand for the restaurant during the last two weekends, so if you would like to come along and try our fantastic two-rosette local Norfolk dishes then please do book first!

This season is going to be very interesting for Cromer; house prices seem to be rising and there are definitely many more posh cars navigating the one-way system. Is the Burnham Market effect sweeping round the coast? We will wait and see, and in the meantime concentrate on trying to provide the high standards that we have done over the last (nearly) 80 years.

We look forward to seeing you at the Grove!

Ingredients • 4 chicken breasts • 300g Binham Blue • 24 slices of pancetta • Rapeseed oil • salt • freshly ground black pepper For the green bean salad • 4 handfuls green beans • ½ lemon, juice only • 3-4 tbsp cold pressed virgin rapeseed oil Preparation method 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas 6. 2. Place each chicken breast between cling film and, using a meat mallet, bash out the pieces until about 0.5cm/0.25in thick. Remove the cling film. 3. Place a piece of Binham blue in the middle of each chicken breast, season and roll up the chicken 4. Place 6 slices of pancetta, side by side. Place one chicken breast on the pancetta slices and tightly wrap pancetta around the chicken.

You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.

SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting eight friends and asking them to donate an additional £5 will mean you will raise at least £40 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.

In 2015 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £20,000 from the suppers.

The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications that enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.

Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.

Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.

UEA Film students present talks and discussions at special dystopian film series in Sheringham Little Theatre

The theatre will be showing three fascinating films uncovering the darker side of cinema, including introductions and discussions by Film students from the University of East Anglia.

Sheringham Little Theatre is excited to be playing host to a great cinematic event, set to unite local students and film enthusiasts over three consecutive nights in February. The mini-film series ‘The End is Nigh’ will shed light on the ways in which directors, writers and cinematographers develop a dystopian world within their films.

For those who are particularly interested in expanding their cinematic knowledge there will be a chance to take part in post-screening discussions with film students from the University of East Anglia, who will also be introducing the films. The films were selected by Paston Sixth Form’s Film Club, who also helped organise the event.

The first film to be shown on Thursday 19 February is the German Science-Fiction film Metropolis (1927). This influential piece of cinema is set amongst the juxtaposition of two contrasting worlds.

In a highly stylised futuristic city, a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. Conflict arises when a privileged youth becomes intent on helping the workers to the dismay of his authoritative father.

The second film in the series is Delicatessen (1991) playing on Friday 20 February. Directed by Jean- Pierre Jeunet (well known for previous work such as Amelie), this French film is set in a post-apocalyptic apartment building. The story focuses on the tenants of the building, struggling for survival on the occasional delicacy of (somewhat questionable) meat from the butcher below.

Third on the bill is surreal, genrejumping mystery The Bothersome Man (2006), in which a 40 year old man arrives in a mysteriously idyllic city with no memory of having travelled there, only to realise there is something decidedly sinister about his emotionally sterile new home.

This series is something new for the theatre, which is keen to establish closer links with Film students in the Norfolk area. This provides an opportunity for

the students to gain valuable experience in leading discussions, while giving local residents a chance to expand their cinematic knowledge and deepen their breadth of understanding in a fun and engaging way.

Dr Karina Aveyard, a Media lecturer at the University of East Anglia said: “These kinds of events are a great opportunity for our students to share their knowledge and passion for film with the local community. For audiences film talks and discussions can really add something special and memorable to the cinema experience.”

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre said “When we’ve had film discussions and workshops in the past, it’s been fantastic to see how interested our audiences are and how hungry the local area is for these sorts of events. Working with the UEA in particular is ideal, as this provides a great platform for students to share their knowledge about the subject while opening it up to people who hasn’t studied it academically as well.” Tickets for the event are available by calling Sheringham Little Theatre’s Box Office on 01263 822347 or by visiting www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Choral Society Returns to St Peter’s Sheringham for Spring Concert with Another Premiere Performance

Following on from their hugely successful First World War Centenary concert (which featured Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) commissioned from the composer Patrick Hawes) Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to St Peter's Sheringham for their Spring concert with music especially relevant for Passiontide. The concert will include the first performance of a new piece especially written for the choir by their Musical Director, Nathan Waring. A Lenten Prayer draws on words written for Ash Wednesday.

The choir will also be singing works by two quite different 19th Century composers, one British, the other Italian. The programme will include The Crucifixion by John Stainer and Stabat Mater by Giuseppi Verdi. Although very

different musically these pieces were composed just 10 years apart.

John Stainer's much loved oratorio The Crucifixion is written for choir and organ. It was composed for the choir of Marylebone Church and first performed on February 24 1887. It includes 5 hymns intended for audience participation. Giuseppe Verdi's Stabat Mater was composed in 1896-97 and now forms part of the Quattro pezzi sacri which were first performed on 7 April 1898 in the Grande Opera, Paris. The 4 pieces had been composed separately over the 20 years since Verdi 'retired' from composing after finishing his Requiem in 1874. The choir will once again be joined by two splendid male soloists whose singing has

Befriending Scheme Eradicating loneliness Are You Feeling Lonely?

At this time of year more than any other we all have cause to feel more lonely and isolated than ever before. The feeling of being left out in the cold for those who have nobody to share their life with is heightened.

The long, cold, nights and short, dark, days can all have a negative impact on our psyche in the short term but the detrimental effect of loneliness on our health can be more long lasting. Effects include an increase in blood pressure, higher levels of cholesterol, induce physical and psychological stresses with a raised risk of cardiovascular diseases and it can also suppress the sufferer’s immune system. Regardless of age or circumstance, 40% of us will feel lonely, and the pain that comes with it,

agree on. They may play games, reminisce, and help to read books or just have a good old chat over a cuppa.

at some point in our lives. This is irrespective of the amount of, or type of, relationships we have in our lives as 60% of people who state they are lonely are in fact married.

Here at Age UK North Norfolk we are trying to eradicate loneliness amongst the over 55s in our area and have been running a befriending service for nine years now, funded by the National Lottery, with an aim at doing just that. Our dedicated, and fully vetted, volunteers are matched carefully by us to the clients on our scheme where both parties are encouraged and given freedom to develop their own friendship in the way that suits them both.

They may visit for an hour or two once or twice a week or fortnightly whatever you

Update on Clubs With Friends

In April 2014 About With Friends launched Clubs With Friends; a programme centred around helping youngsters with Special Educational Needs to access mainstream community activities. Since its launch we have successfully helped a number of young people with learning disabilities, autism, or mental health conditions to become involved with local clubs and groups. This has included traditional Youth Clubs as well as specialist groups like Drama Clubs. We have also supported others in accessing voluntary work.

The project is continuing and we have room to take on more youngsters. Referrals can be made by the young person themselves or by their families or any professionals working with them. To qualify, the person must be between 13 and 25 (inclusive), have Special Educational Needs, and live in the North Norfolk area.

We can provide a tailored service to meet the needs of the individual. We will spend as much time getting to know the youngster as is necessary to find an activity or club that suits them. We can then continue to support them to access that club and help them build the confidence they need to access it independently. Additionally we can provide young mentors who act as role models.

Having that someone you know and get along with in your life and the feeling you have as you look forward to them paying you a visit can make the world of difference to a person’s life and can be the difference between them getting poorly and them having a fulfilling quality of life.

If you are feeling lonely or know of someone who would benefit from having a befriender, or if you think you can spare an hour or two a week and would like to become a volunteer yourself, then please contact us on the details below as you could be making a real difference to someone’s life in the year ahead.

Thank you and a very happy 2015 The Befriending Team Age UK North Norfolk 01263 823126

Those who have been on the programme so far have seen some of the following positive outcomes: • • • • • •

Being included in their local community Attending youth club/activity Family feel supported/ not alone Widened social opportunities More friends Improved self confidence

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Part 1 - What are the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards? by Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were established under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Mental Health Act 2007, to ensure that the freedom of people in care homes and hospitals is restricted only if there is no alternative, and that it is done in a safe and legal way. It must always be done in the best interests of the person concerned.

Any adult being cared for by such a provider, who has a mental health condition (including dementia) which prevents them from making decisions about their care or treatment, may potentially come under these safeguards. The Mental Capacity Act sets out the test for whether someone lacks mental capacity to make decisions, which I will consider further in my next article.

Before applying for a deprivation of liberty authorisation, the care provider must consider whether such care can be given to that person (let’s call her Mrs A) in a less restrictive way. If not, then the care provider must get permission to deprive Mrs A of her liberty. This process provides the following safeguards for Mrs A: 1. She will have a representative to protect her interests.

2. She (or her representative) will have the right to challenge the deprivation of liberty

arrangements through the Court of Protection.

3. There will be procedures in place for the deprivation of liberty to be monitored and reviewed regularly.

If the care provider considers it necessary to deprive Mrs A of her liberty in order to provide the necessary care, it must apply for authorisation to the relevant supervisory body, which in England is usually the Local Authority (LA). The LA will assess Mrs A to see whether the necessary criteria for DoLS are met, and will then grant or refuse the authorisation.

There must be at least two independent, trained assessors – a best interests assessor (a social worker, nurse, occupational therapist or chartered psychologist) and a mental health assessor (a doctor, usually a psychiatrist or geriatrician). They will report back to the LA, and if they find that the necessary conditions are met, the LA will authorise the deprivation of liberty, possibly with changes to make the care less restrictive. An authorisation should not be used where someone meets the criteria for detention under the Mental Health Act 1983.

The authorisation lasts for a maximum of 12 months, but should be for the shortest

Because it is unlawful to deprive someone of their liberty without this authorisation, the care provider can grant itself an urgent authorisation, which will usually be valid for seven days. They must apply for standard authorisation at the same time.

Swafield community benefits from North Norfolk Big Society Fund grant

Swafield residents can now enjoy a much improved village hall thanks to a £3,000 grant from North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund.

Swafield Village Hall Committee applied for a grant from the Big Society Fund to undertake refurbishment works to the hall floor, woodwork, guttering, drainage and grounds. The effects of damp in the floor in particular meant that the hall, which is a focal point for this small community, could no longer be used for certain activities.

Originally a Victorian School which opened in 1852, the building became the village hall in the 1930s.

North Norfolk District Council’s Vice Chairman, Annie Claussen– Reynolds attended an event at the hall and commended the committee for their hard work, commitment and dedication to improving the village hall. She said “I am delighted that, with the help from Big Society funding, Swafield Village Hall can continue to be used for activities that benefit the local community. Village halls are often the focal point for the community, and I hope the improved facilities will encourage many more local residents to make the most of it.”

time possible. It must be reviewed regularly, especially if there is a change of circumstances, and the LA must remove the authorisation if it is no longer required. They must also provide Mrs A’s representative, usually a family member or friend, with information about her care, and about any changes to the DoLS.

Council calls on ‘Absent Voters’ to refresh their signatures

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has sent letters to 501 long-term absent voters asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.

Postal voters, proxy voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years, are being asked to provide the Council with a new signature if they want to remain an ‘absent voter’.

Returning the completed form by 2 March 2015 will ensure that absent voters will remain eligible to vote in future elections. Reminder notices will be sent to those who have not returned their form by 9 February 2015. If the deadline of 2 March 2015 is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.

A frequently asked questions sheet with more information concerning the absent vote signature refresh is available to view online.

For any queries relating to the absent voter signature refresh, please contact NNDC’s Electoral Services team on 01263 516046 or 516317.

Dear Margaret,

For 40 years I have been collecting postage stamps for charity and although I may have retired from normal work, I would like to remind people that I have not retired from collecting stamps for charity, even at 81 years of age. Stamps may still be handed in at Sainsburys at the Lottery counter and also the Mobile Library, many thanks to you both for your help. I would like to add that I will also value collections and, if the price is right, will buy. Thank you to those who have continued to contribute. Please contact me on 01692 405002 in regards to the above. Yours sincerely, Arthur Gribben

We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From Surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.

So what has changed? Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains‘three things’1] The procedure has changed from

£350 OFF

Dear Margaret,

I help to organise a group that meets at Stalham Youth Club, Recreation Road, Stalham, every Tuesday between 11am and 2pm. One of our members cooks us a two course lunch and coffee or tea are readily available. The first week is free and then we pay £4 each to cover the cost of food and the rent of the premises. The group is mainly for people who have suffered from mental illness but we welcome anybody. There are four pool tables that are free to play on. In the summer we have outings to places of interest. If you have a lack of transport, then Chris in Trimingham, Gary in Catfield or myself in North Walsham would be glad to give you a lift. Just turn up on a Tuesday at 11am or contact me for more information on 01692 402038 or 07919 865413. Yours sincerely, Richard Baker a surgical procedure to non-surgical. We do not need to use a knife anymore. 2] The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable ones-same as used in fillers. 3] The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.

How is the procedure performed? No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area.

What is the recovery like? After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days. There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

‘Trust me I’m a magician’ were some of Roy Davenport’s opening words when he recounted the story of the Davenport dynasty to Club members last month. Roy’s Magic Kingdom, which moved to the present site in North Walsham in May 2013, is now a well known attraction in the town, but a long way from a humble beginning in London’s east end at the beginning of the last century.

The founder, Lewis Davenport, started by offering tricks for a farthing in public houses in 1898. This was an era when there was virtually no home entertainment, except for the wealthier middle classes. He later began a mail order business, selling board games, puzzles and practical jokes. The project flourished after he acquired a printing press, and resulted in the opening of the family’s first shop in the Mile End Road, 1908.

Lewis’s first wife died of tuberculosis in 1907, and he remarried Winifred in 1909. George, Roy’s grandfather, was able to work full time in the business by 1924. The First World War resulted in the curtailment of many of their supplies, which were manufactured in Germany. This did not appear to affect the firm too severely, for in 1929 Lewis was able to purchase a sixteen room mansion in Kent.

The 1920s proved to be a fruitful time, for Lewis was now able to spend a couple of months every year working in Germany, where he acquired a fluent knowledge of the language. This enabled him to make face-to-face contact with suppliers of magic aids including guillotines, bean barrels and novelty games. This resulted in him acquiring wholesale distribution rights in the UK. Many of these items were stored initially, in the crypt of the Holy Trinity Church, Holborn leading to the accumulation of memorabilia covering almost a century. The church has since been deconsecrated, and is presently occupied by a Tesco store.

The decision to come to North Walsham, was as a result of performing in the area during the early part of the present century. He subsequently acquired a 125 year lease on the premises and it is now a popular attraction, not merely for tourists, but also for those involved in the entertainment industry, both in the UK and also abroad. Indeed he recently entertained a visitor from Maine, USA, engaged on a three day business trip.

The Club meets next on the Wednesday, 25 February, when new members will welcome. Ted Gadsden

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Later this year the branch will have been helping cats in the North Walsham and District area for 15 years and many have been helped during this time. At the beginning, we had just 3 cat pens and it was easy to identify where each cat was when Stephanie received an enquiry from someone looking to offer one of the residents a home. As the number of pens has increased, so has the number of calls to the ‘cat phone’. When you consider just 13 cats were re-homed by us in the latter part of 2000 out of the total of over 3200 we have re-homed to date, the workload from the phone has increased considerably. We therefore took the decision for one of our volunteers to deal with enquiries relating to neutering on the special number listed below.

Because Stephanie still deals with all other enquiries relating to cats coming in (including information regarding the number of cats on the waiting list), cats being re-homed, general enquiries, feral colonies and contact with the vets, we ask callers not to ring the neutering number unless they require a voucher. At the end of the day, Stephanie will still have to deal with the enquiry and it just causes extra work for all concerned. Similarly, enquiries received via the Cats Protection website can sometimes be replied to but, here again, if it relates to someone wishing to re-home one of our cats or for a cat to go on our waiting list, a quicker response will be received if they call the cat phone as Stephanie does not use a computer for cat work.

Last year we had just two cats come into care that were over 12 years old. Already this year we have four such cats in residence. These lovely cats have joined us because their owners can no longer care for them or have died. Missy and Tookey, who have only just joined us, are lovely tabby girls who are in good health and just love having a fuss and a cuddle. As cats tend to live longer nowadays they could live for many more years and would be suitable companions for the older cat lover, of which I am one.

Indie is a very beautiful young chocolate Labrador cross and has come to us from a home environment.

Unfortunately, her owners felt she needed people with more time to devote to her. Indie has been very upset to be without her family as this is what she craves more than anything else - a peaceful, calm home with a good routine, with people she knows and loves.

Indie is a very loving and affectionate girl and adores a fuss and a cuddle. She loves to be close to you and to feel safe. Indie will need human company for a lot of the day please, although she can be left for a few hours and is not destructive. She will want, and need, a couple of good walks a day please in the countryside, or at the beach please, and is good on and off the lead (once bonded with you of course). She will enjoy playing in the garden with you, as she loves to run after toys, and your garden will need to be securely enclosed for a dog please. Indie knows basic commands and does a lovely sit. She was housetrained in her home and is very clean in her kennel.

Indie has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and can be rehomed outside of the county, within reason, subject to a successful homecheck. Indie is very good with other dogs and LOVES to play with them, but she would rather enjoy being the only dog at home please. She could live with older children aged 12+.

Indie will make a very special companion and will need dog-experienced new owners who will allow her to settle at her own pace in her new home. You will need to be kind, calm and patient and be able to give Indie the time she needs to shine!

Sheringham Little Theatre celebrates 55 years of its Summer Repertory by presenting its five best plays in 2015

‘Best of the Best’ repertory season welcomes back original directors who first brought productions to life on its seaside stage.

Sheringham Little Theatre is thrilled to be producing a summer season of plays made up of the most popular past productions the North Norfolk venue has ever staged. The majority of these productions will feature the same directors credited with first staging the performances in Sheringham, including the return of Olivier Award winning actor Desmond Barrit, who will be directing the hilarious Willy Russell comedy ‘Educating Rita’ in July.

The theatre is one of the last in the country to produce a traditional summer repertory – this is a series of five plays, all sharing the same actors across the entire period. The strength of its professional summer season has earned Sheringham Little Theatre numerous accolades and a dedicated audience, ensuring that residents and tourists alike continue scooping up seats the moment tickets go on sale. The summer repertory is a legendary challenge for the actors involved, who are regularly required to perform in one play, learn directions for another, and memorise lines for more still – all at the same time. It’s this thrill and professional devotion which gives Sheringham’s repertory its distinct character, enabling it to showcase some of the finest acting and directorial talent in the country. The decision to welcome back five of the most popular summer repertory productions was made to celebrate the season’s 55th year, giving audiences new and old an opportunity to experience the five ‘Best of the Best’ plays from the theatre’s past. The first play in the season is ‘Educating Rita,’ running from 21 – 28 July. Desmond Barrit directs this classic comedy which tells the story of an alcoholic university lecturer who has his life changed by his bohemian new student. This is followed by the Victorian costume drama ‘The Late Edwina Black’. Running from 30 July 5 August, Warren Catherine directs this twisting tale of death and intrigue about an inspector investigating the sudden death of a wealthy aristocrat. Next up is ‘Bedroom Farce’. Moving at a frenetic pace and featuring three separate bedrooms, this anticipated production runs from 7 – 18 August. Nicky Henson, a Founder Member of the Young Vic theatre whose career has spanned the Royal Shakespeare Company to Faulty Towers, returns to direct this much-loved Alan Ayckbourn comedy.

‘Perfect Wedding,’ running from 20 – 29 August, throws the audience into another fantastical situational comedy. Featuring themes of friendship, betrayal and ultimately love, the production returns after numerous requests for it to have another run in Sheringham. Simon Thompson returns to direct, following the critical success of ‘Caught in the Net’ last year. Finishing the season is the Noël Coward gem ‘Private Lives,’ running from 1 – 5 September. Peter Craze, hot off from directing ‘The Trials of Oscar Wilde’ for its huge UK run, returns to direct this classic comedy of manners.

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre said: “We are very excited about this anniversary season and look forward to welcoming back our renowned directors with their fantastic plays.”

Tickets for the event go on public sale on Monday 9 March, and will be available by calling Sheringham Little Theatre’s Box Office on 01263 822347 or by visiting www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Photographs are from the previous production of ‘Perfect Wedding’ and ‘The Late Edwina Black’.

Vikings Mini Rugby Tour 2015

This year North Walsham Rugby Club’s Minis are on Tour at PGL Caythorpe thanks to some kind donations from local businesses.

The Tour itself is something that is arranged every year and gives approximately 100 local players and coaches from the Club a fantastic opportunity. The children that are invited onto the Tour are between the ages of 7-12 years and are playing for North Walsham RFC Minis.

The Tour is a fantastic way to build team spirit, morale and identity with children from the

local community. The Tour has always provided memories and friendships that will last a lifetime as they progress through the Club. Each Tour is always finished with a Rugby Festival at a local ground and this year we are looking forward to joining a Festival at Cambridge for all the players to practice their skills outside their usual remit. The Tour is purely self-funded through sponsors, donations and club events and if any further companies would like to donate towards the Tour please contact vikingminitour@gmail.com.

We would like to especially thank both Waitrose at North Walsham for donating money from their Community Matters Scheme and also North Walsham Round Table.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham team up with Victory Swim & Fitness Centre all in aid of ‘Shaping Up’ for the new year!

Staff at the local superstore dedicated themselves to the eight week ‘Shape Up’ course - a heath, fitness and wellbeing programme designed by Weight Concern in conjunction with Cancer Research UK.

A small group of colleagues from Sainsbury’s North Walsham attended the 1 hour per week sessions that are built around an exclusive instruction manual and supported by professional instruction from Adam Breeze, one of Victory Swim & Fitness Centre’s fitness and personal training instructors. Adam has a wealth of experience with weight management and provided a great amount of knowledge and support.

This is not a conventional slimming course but a series of lessons with personalized recommendations on exercise, designed to equip the participants to make suitable improvements to their diet and lifestyle, overall wellbeing and quality of life. It also included helpful information regarding portion sizes and food labels. As well as creating and developing a group dynamic whereby course mates could share different experiences that they could all relate to, support, and learn from. Not to mention access to all of the centres facilities, including the gym, pool and group workout classes on a complimentary guest pass.

Hannah and Felicity had previously worked together to promote Sport Relief, and the Sainsbury’s North Walsham Group really felt they benefited from the sessions.

Victory Swim & Fitness Centre always enjoy working alongside local businesses and community groups in efforts to raise participation and awareness of active places for healthy people. We encourage everyone to give ‘Shape Up’ a go!

North Walsham Table Tennis

Two home teams make quarter-finals - one without hitting a ball!

The Handicap Cups started with the doubles and this year a new system is in operation where every point counts. The players are given a handicap between 0 for the top players and 32 for the novices – the difference is then calculated and each of the nine battles that make up a match is played over two sets (normally up to 21 but greater if necessary as the weaker player must always score four points). At the end of the match, the total points scored by each team are added up to determine the winners. In the first round, NWSCA lost 558-499 to Mundesley B, NWSCB lost 463-366 to LCC Lobsters and NWSCC lost 350-327 to Aylsham A, however NWSCF progressed with a 350-336 victory against Crosscourts and NWSCD and NWSCE both received byes.

The second round matches took place the next week and at the ACT Centre, Aylsham D’s Charlotte Edwards (23), Ken Seaman (30) and Neil Edwards (26) hosted NWSCE’s Stuart Hook (15), James Lester (17) and Ben Lester

(19) with the handicaps giving the hosts starts between 7 and 12. The father and daughter pairing of the Edward’s gave Aylsham a nine point advantage after the opening battle, which was reduced to four after the fourth. There was a dogged comeback by NWSCE with especially James Lester putting in a good performance in the fifth, sixth and seventh battles and by the time the latter was over the visitors now had a six point advantage. An eighteen point swing in the eighth battle proved crucial however as Charlotte Edwards and Seaman’s (+9) 21-15, 21-9 win against Hook and Ben Lester saw Aylsham into a twelve point lead and this was increased by a couple of points in the final two sets as the hosts won 347-333.

At Antingham, NWSCF’s Tom Wardle (23), Carrie Last (26) and Andrew Weston (21) hosted LCC Lobster’s Robbie Birtwell (27), Val Kidger (32) and Sophie Mutton (32) with the handicaps giving the visitors starts between 5 and 10. Birtwell and

Mutton (+7) had a good opening set as they beat Wardle and Weston 21-6, but the NWSCF duo recovered to win the next set 21-16 – however Lobsters still had a ten point advantage. Three of the next four sets were won by NWSCF who led for the first time and by a dozen points after Wardle and Last won the second set of the third battle against Birtwell and Kidger (+5) 21-10. The match remained close and at the two thirds of the way through mark, NWSCF had an eight point advantage. Last and Weston then increased this by a further ten points in the seventh battle before Wardle and Last added another half a dozen points in the eighth. Wardle and Last finished impressively in the ninth beating Kidger and Mutton (+10) 21-12, 21-12 as NWSCF sealed a 345-303 victory. NWSCD will join them in the quarter-finals – following their bye, the team received a walkover against Outlaws and are hence yet to hit a ball!

Mundesley Table Tennis Club benefits from North Norfolk Big Society Fund

Mundesley Table Tennis Club is the latest community group to benefit from North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund (BSF).

A grant of £3,000 has enabled the Table Tennis Club to purchase four modern table tennis tables and a range of other equipment. This will be used to enable existing members to develop their game as well as promote the sport of table tennis to people of all ages and abilities.

Cllr. Wyndham Northam, North Norfolk District Council’s local member for Mundesley,

attended a meeting of the club in December and said “I was impressed by the commitment and dedication of the club members; two of whom are qualified national umpires and coaches.

“I highly commend the Committee for its hard work, dedication and commitment and am delighted to that North Norfolk District Council has been able to help fund the new equipment. I hope that it will encourage many more local residents to take up table tennis.”

Equipment purchased by the grant will also help support the development of an
