North Walsham Farmers Market Success
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
North Walsham town centre came alive on the first day of this month with the latest Farmers Market organised by North Walsham Town Council and the Regenerate North Walsham group, supported by Norfolk Food & Drink Festival.
The sun shone as locals and visitors, some from as far away as Kings Lynn, took advantage of the array of goods available, from homemade puddings to delicious pickles and freshly ground coffee to exquisite cheeses.
And while mums and dads sampled such gastronomic delights, there was fun for the children in and around the church.
It was a real community effort, spearheaded by local landlady Jenny Harmer and the atmosphere in the town was buzzing.
Producers hailed the day a success and plans are already well underway for the next market on 29 March.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Happisburgh Lifeboat Station’s look back at 2014 with the awards and dinner dance held at Sutton Staithe Hotel on 28 February.
his Boxing Day night to man Gravesend Lifeboat plus he also mans Great Yarmouth Lifeboat when he is at work in the area and Charlotte Siely who is at University Plymouth, mans their Lifeboat. This enables these crew members to keep up to date with their training but also learn new skills, which they bring back to the Station for the benefit of all our crews.
Just under a hundred people attended the dinner dance. After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2014.
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have had a busy 2014, with seven services for our lifeboats throughout the year.
Dawn Phenix receiving her award from Philip Smith and Rob Ferguson
Much more happened throughout the year: Charlotte Siely became D-Class Helm and Christian Larter became Atlantic Helm.
Keith and we were able to showcase the work of the RNLI.
Dawn Phenix received Vellum of thanks from the RNLI for her Fundraising work and Cedric Cox received the RNLI Gold Badge for his 47 years of service to Happisburgh Station.
The RNLI asked the Station to provide the colour party for the RNLI Standard at the National Service for Seafarers; Tim Grimmer, Cubitt Siely and Tony Phenix travelled to St Paul’s Cathedral for this honour.
In July we celebrated one hundred years of continuous service and received a Vellum of Service, also in July the Station’s Coastal Safety Team started their work.
August saw Lifeboat Day with a callout just as we started; we went on to raise £ 5,000 in just four hours. Also in August saw a film crew from More 4 visit to make a program called “Hidden Villages” working with Penelope

The Achievement award, is decided on by all the Station and this year went to Dawn Phenix for all her hard work in fundraising and Station administration for the past 10 years, and the Coordinator for the annual Lifeboat Day, which has raised over £15,000 in the past three years alone.
On the night we raised £619 for the RNLI.
The Service Award for memorable services was not awarded this year as the Lifeboat Management Group did not deem any of last year’s services were sufficiently memorable to receive this award.
The crew and their guests then enjoyed the rest of the night dancing to music played by an excellent band.

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Part 2 – What is Deprivation of Liberty? By Victoria Wells – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
In my previous article I considered the purpose of and procedure for obtaining Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) authorisation.
This is required by hospitals and care homes when they consider it necessary to deprive someone of their liberty in order to provide the necessary care. It can only be applied to someone who has a mental health condition (including dementia) which prevents them from making decisions about their care or treatment.
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 sets out the test for whether someone lacks mental capacity to make decisions as being if they cannot do one or more of the following: 1. Understand information given to them
2. Retain that information long enough to be able to make a decision
3. Weigh up the information available and understand the consequences of the decision
4. Communicate their decision, by any possible means.
But what exactly does “deprivation of liberty” mean? A Supreme Court case recently provided the following definition – “the person is under continuous supervision and control and is not free to leave, and that person lacks capacity to consent to these arrangements” It is not relevant whether they actually object or not to the arrangements for their care.
Other cases have provided the following examples of situations and decisions which may amount to a deprivation of liberty: • Restraint of a person in order to admit them to hospital
• Medication being given against a person’s will, in particular to sedate them
• Complete control over a patient’s care or movements for an extended period of time
• Restrictions on where they may live, against their wishes or that of a family member
• Refusal to release a patient into the care of others
• Restriction of a person’s access to their family and friends
• Restriction of their movements within a care setting, including the locking of doors
• Restraint being used when giving care or treatment
• One-to-one supervision
• The use of bedrails and wheelchair straps.
A deprivation of liberty can consist of one major decision by the care provider, such as restraint or not being able to leave the care setting, or several smaller decisions, combined. Ultimately it is the amount of control that the care provider has over the person that will decide whether there is a deprivation of liberty, and each case has to be looked at individually.
The Supreme Court has observed that there have been far fewer applications for DoLS authorisations than was envisaged when the legislation came in. However, it appears that care homes in particular are increasingly applying for a DoLS authorisation whenever they have North Walsham Times 466 March 14th 2015
a client who lacks capacity to make decisions about their care and treatment. This may be in part to protect, quite understandably, their own legal position, but should hopefully as well provide the intended safeguards for the vulnerable person.
If you have a loved one in a care home or other care setting, it may be worth checking whether a DoLS authorisation is in place, in case you have not been made aware of this.

Pannacotta
The snowdrops are blooming away and the Estate Manger has been climbing the apple trees with his secataur as spring officially hits the Gem of the Norfolk Coast. The phones have been red-hot for bookings and to celebrate the new season we are launching our Spring Menu on Thursday 19th March, full of fantastic local produce and mouthwatering dishes created by our head chef Michael West and the team. We also have a couple of tables left for the best Mothers’ Day lunch in Norfolk, so if you want to give the most important person in your life the perfect treat then please do give us a ring on 01263512412.
We look forward to seeing you soon here at the Grove.
INGREDIENTS • 400ml double cream • 4½ tablespoons caster sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 3 leaves or 1¼ teaspoons gelatine • 300g berries, to serve
METHOD Put the cream and sugar in a saucepan and stir over gentle heat until sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for approximately 3 minutes, adding the vanilla. 1. If you are using gelatine leaves, soak them in cold water until floppy, then squeeze out any excess water. Stir the leaves into the hot cream until they are completely dissolved. If you are using powdered gelatine, sprinkle it onto the hot cream in an even layer and leave it to absorb for a minute, then stir in the cream until dissolved.
Cooking up a Quiz!
2. Pour the mixture into four 125 ml ramekins. Cover each with a piece of cling film and refrigerate until set. 3. Unmould the panna cotta by placing the ramekins briefly into a bowl of hot water and then tipping them gently onto plates. Serve with fresh berries.

If you like food and you like a fun quiz night, Aylsham’s Slow Food group has just the answer!
Returning for a seventh year, the Foodie Quiz starts at 7.30pm on Saturday 21st March in Aylsham Town Hall and promises a light-hearted evening of food-related posers. Quizmaster Roger Willis offers a few pointers: “All the questions have a link to food but some are not always immediately obvious,” he says. “For example last year we had a round called Eat Your Greens which featured celebrities with the surname Green. But equally, there were questions about foods across the world, from Dundee cake to potatoes and mulligatawny soup to aubergines. As ever, the music rounds proved very popular too with ditties like the Banana Boat Song and Lilac Wine.”
Obviously the Foodie Quiz doesn’t take itself too seriously and Slow Food Aylsham aims to provide a fun evening for all the family. A Ploughman’s Supper is included in the £7.50 ticket price with tickets available from Barnwells Newsagents or Salad Days Fruit & Veg, both in Aylsham Market Place. If you are unable to get into town, drop an email to slowfoodaylsham@gmail.com to make alternative arrangements.

Youth services at AWF receive funding for another year!
Cromer based charity About With Friends are delighted to have their Short Break Activities contract for children and young people in Norfolk extended for a fifth year! This means we can continue to offer a great service to young people with a learning disability and their families. For the under 18s we offer social activities during the evenings, weekends and school and college holidays. We offer a whole variety of activities from discos to theme parks; shopping trips and special events; sailing and train trips. In fact, we offer our young people exactly the same sort of experiences their mainstream peers enjoy. We are very much driven by what our members want and if they ask for something we do our best to provide it.
We have supported over 80 young people over the years and are pleased we can continue our activities for another year – and will be tendering for another long term contract with Children’s Services when the opportunity arises.
Ask for information about sponsoring a hen whilst visiting
We have received great feedback from parents, members and other professionals for the flexible exciting programme we offer – our service was described by the Contract Review Group, made up of commissioners, parents and the Children with Disabilities team, as ‘unique ‘ and that we ‘make the impossible a reality for disabled young people’.
Our services are: 9-12s - Friday evening youth
club in Cromer - referrals can be from any interested party with a disabled child.
13-18s - 30 days per year of school/college holiday activities – referrals through Children’s Services. Weekend activities referrals through Children’s Services. 1 evening activity session per week - referrals can be from any interested party with a disabled child.
For more information about our youth services please contact Emily Lown 01263 515230 or emilylown@aboutwithfriends.co.uk

RACING TO BEAT CANCER
Dear Margaret,
My family are currently training hard for the 2015 Virgin London Marathon.
This is the 5th year family members will have covered the 26.2 gruelling miles for Breast Cancer Campaign. We have been committed to raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign for the last ten years and have now raised over £80,000. This year we are determined to reach our £100,000 target and in order to step up our fundraising, my husband, Russell Harmer, will actually be running 5 marathons from North Walsham to London in the 5 days leading up to the Marathon and will then complete his 6th marathon on 26 April. Although our training is extremely challenging, our aim is simple...to help find a cure for breast cancer.
We are passionate about supporting Breast Cancer Campaign because it is the charity that my aunty, Helen Plummer, supported before she died of breast cancer in 2006. She was an inspiration during her two and a half year battle, raising over £11,000 (with the support of family and friends) and we promised her that we would continue to play our part in finding a cure and preventing other families from suffering the same fate. With 50,000 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year (and 12,000 dying from the disease) there is still a lot of work to be done. To achieve our ambitious target of £100,000 this year (five years earlier than previously planned), we desperately need your support. This vital money would go towards the 86 research projects the charity currently supports to accelerate progress towards finding a cure.

2. Donate online via our fundraising page at: www.justgiving.com/Russharmer 3. Send a cheque made out to Helen Plummer Cancer Charity Fund (Account number: 70866903; Sort code: 20-03-26) to the address above.
Any donations (however big or small) will be gratefully received. Kindest regards, Vicky Harmer and family

Holocaust Survivor Talk
On Wednesday 25 February, Paston College was privileged to host a talk given by John Dobai, a survivor of the Holocaust, on his experiences in Hungary during the era of the Nazi domination of Central Europe.
This talk was organised by Dave Sparkhall, History Teacher at Paston, with the help of Jasper Haywood and Sophie Coles, two students who had been given the opportunity to visit AuschwitzBirkenau the previous year, via the Lessons from Auschwitz
Project which is an annual event organised by the Holocaust Educational Trust.
John’s testimony took in his childhood in Budapest and his family’s decision to convert from Judaism to Catholicism to escape the increasing anti-semitism advancing across Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. To a hushed crowd of around 200 students, John then described the political and military events that led to his father’s imprisonment in a forced labour camp and the circumstances
that ended with both him and the rest of his family escaping deportation to Auschwitz due to the courageous actions of Raul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat.
Students were able to ask questions about John’s experiences including ‘do you forgive your persecutors?’ which he answered by stating that although he could not forgive them, he did not hate them. A remarkable answer from a remarkable person.

Cromer coast protection work update
The second phase of North Norfolk District Council’s £8m ‘Cromer Coast Protection’ scheme has been extended and is expected to continue until early 2016.
The scheme, designed not only to maintain the existing level of defence, but also to withstand many years of predicted sea level rise, has involved more work than was originally programmed due to the storm surge in December 2013. To ensure minimal disruption to the Easter and summer holiday periods,
work will stop as originally programmed on 31 March 2015. Following positive discussions with key stakeholders, including residents and local businesses to consider options for the continuation of the scheme, it has been agreed that the contractor (Volker Stevin) will start site set-up on Monday 7 September in preparation of site work starting on Monday 14 September. Work, including repairs to the timber groynes, and re-facing the existing sea walls has been completed on the east end of Cromer’s frontage. The extension will include work at the west end, the parapet wall, underneath the Pier and promenade surfacing. The sea defences at Cromer protect the town from the force of the North Sea. They were built in various phases as the town expanded, the earliest dating back to 1836. Over the years, the walls and groynes have withstood many storms and have been maintained, enhanced and repaired as and when required. The coast protection scheme will reduce the impact of the sea along the Cromer frontage as well as helping to maintain a stable beach in front of the seawalls for future years. The historical significance of some of the structures has been carefully taken into consideration and the overall character of the promenade should not change. Pedestrian access to the Pier will remain during the work, and signage will be installed to direct visitors away from work areas when required. Cromer will remain open for business and the engineering operations are a spectacle that can be viewed from many cliff top vantage points. Work will not be carried out for two weeks over the Christmas holiday period. Cabinet Member for Coastal Management, Angie Fitch-Tillett said “The work we are undertaking now will protect Cromer, its residents, its businesses and its visitors for many years to come, and despite the difficult working conditions being blown off course temporarily by the tidal surge, the contractor has made good progress so far. “Right through the work we have ensured that Cromer has been open for business and this will not change with the extension to this major engineering scheme.” The Cromer Coast Protection Project has been chosen by the Institute of Chartered Engineers (ICE) to be part of its ‘This is Engineering’ campaign. The campaign has been designed to bring together construction projects across the UK to show how civil engineers shape the world around and also aims to encourage young people to consider a career in engineering.

St. Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market Village Library
After a very busy month welcoming so many visitors to see the church snowdrops, the Village Library facility, where books may be borrowed, exchanged or purchased is seriously depleted and in need of replenishment.
Donations of clean, unwanted books may be left at the back of the church and will be gratefully received.
Chairman of the Methodist Conference to Lead Service of Praise and Thanksgiving
The local Methodist congregation is looking forward to the visit of Rev K Howcroft to North Walsham to lead worship on Sunday 29 March. The service, in the church on Grammar School Road, will commence at 10.30am.
The visit of Rev Howcroft is the beginning of a year of celebration to mark 125 years since the building of the church in 1890. The congregation of the church feels that 125 years of continuous worship is an event to celebrate in the form of a service of praise and thanksgiving.
The service is open to anyone wishing to attend – a warm welcome is extended to all.
Thorpe Market Snowdrop Teas
The four Sundays in February saw a steady stream of visitors to Thorpe Market Church.
A total of 796 people braved the cold to see the snowdrops and enjoy a warm church and tasty teas.
Nearly £1900 was raised for church funds. This year, for the first time, artists used the church display screens and created a lot of interest. The Village Library stocks were well depleted by the end of the month.
The churchyard still looks beautiful and is worth a visit. Visitors from all over the county and beyond were welcomed to this annual event.
The next similar happening in the church calendar takes place the weekend of the 13 June. The wildflower conservation areas will be at their best and Norfolk Wildflower Trust will be hosting a wildflower identification day on the Saturday. Anyone with an interest in grassland wild flowers is warmly welcomed. Admission is free.
On the Sunday, the church will be offering hospitality to visitors with more tasty teas. The weekend will end with a service of rededication of the Hazel Grove led by Bishop Tony Foottitt. Photos: Paul Damen
Volunteering at Sainsbury's North Walsham
Three Sainsbury’s North Walsham colleagues have applied for and been awarded a ‘Local Hero’ grant under Sainsbury’s scheme to promote volunteering. The three charities they have worked for during 2014 have a share of £650.
Deanna Wells, who works on the counters, has been recognised for the second year running for her work with Riding for The Disabled. She puts in a regular two hours every week to supervise adults with differing disabilities at The Redhall Livery Riding Centre.
Michelle Duddy on the beach
Michelle Duddy, who is a check out colleague, is a volunteer with the Marine Conservation Society. They organise beach clean working parties locally at Bacton, Walcott, Ostend and Sea Palling as part of their Beachwatch programme to remove litter that spoils the beach for holidaymakers but more importantly pollutes the seas and create hazards for wildlife.

Felicity Christian, the store’s PR Ambassador involved herself with the Royal British Deanna Wells (left) with her friends Legion’s planning work for and the weekend commemorating at Riding for the Disabled 100 years since WW1 held at The Atrium in September. She then helped to recruit and organize volunteers from her colleagues to cover 40 hours of the record breaking Poppy Appeal at Sainsbury’s North Walsham in November. WildWorks World Premiere at Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2015 An immersive journey takes its audience deep into a world of shape-shifting humans and animals, created specially for the enveloping dark woods of Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall The major theatrical highlight of this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival is a new commission from acclaimed outdoor theatre makers WildWorks, co-produced by Norfolk & Norwich Festival running from Tuesday 5 - Saturday 23 May (except Sundays). Wolf’s Child is an immersive journey deep into the dark dense woodland surrounding Norfolk’s Felbrigg Hall. It takes its audience on a journey into a world of shape-shifting animals and humans. An original
landscape theatre commission from the masters of the genre, this promises to be an unmissable theatrical experience. Created specially for the evocative woods around the National Trust property, the story is partly inspired by the Ancient Greek myth of Callisto, who became a beast and was killed by her own hunter son, and also the astonishing true story of Norfolk born Shaun Ellis, who spent two years as a fully integrated member of an Idaho wolf pack shunning all human contact. This extraordinary grown-up fairytale of love and betrayal opens in daylight against the magnificent backdrop of Felbrigg Hall. Then, as dusk approaches, LTD LT D the show follows an otherworldly journey through the trees to places of magical transformation; where crows talk and wolves sing, and where one disobedient serving maid discovers her inner beast. Shaun Ellis is a special consultant to WildWorks on the project. Wolf’s Child features original live CORNISH WAY BUSINESS PARK PARK music, a cast of 13 professional actors and musicians and up to 50 NORTH WALSHAM locally recruited participants. 01692 400900 Bill Mitchell, WildWorks Artistic www.dlhautorecyclers.co.uk Director expanded ‘Wolf's Child is a thrilling journey from safety and security into the untamed wild. Now is the Time of Year…
…when the Brass Band stirs from its post-Christmas hibernation to leisurely contemplate what airs and melodies it will perform for its followers in the forthcoming seasons.
What a load of codswallop! Just two weeks off over the Christmas period, that is all members of the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band get.
At the beginning of January the musicians return to their many pieces of festive music - carols, sleigh ride jingles, novelty numbers, songs about snow (that pretty, fluffy white stuff that flutters from the sky and then deteriorates into a horrible grey slurry) to the Band librarian - and in return receive a generous wad of parts which include a variety of compositions such as marches, traditional airs, popular melodies and well known tunes from film and stage. Then the Band continues its regular Thursday practices, honing its performing skills in preparation for a first appearance in March.
Pop to the Band’s web site www.cromerandsheringhambrassband.com where you will discover a great deal of information, including where the Band will be appearing throughout the year - it is updated as soon as further engagements come along.
However, a particularly special occasion worth marking on your calendar is the Band’s Open Day on Saturday 11 April to be held at St Peter’s Church Hall, Sheringham. From 10am you can drop in to chat to members of the band over a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. Be our guest. Learn something of the Band’s history. Have a ‘blow’ of a brass instrument, who knows you might be surprised at your undiscovered skill, and even consider how you can join our ranks. Age is not an issue, the youngest member is ten years old, and the oldest is … well lets just say he has had a bus pass for some years.
But hold on, the day doesn’t end there. The band will be playing a variety of musical pieces that evening at a Concert in St Peter’s Church, Sheringham from 7.30pm. There is no admission charge, just make a small financial contribution as you leave. We look forward to seeing you. North Walsham Times 466 March 14th 2015
trek deep into the woods with a woman running from ‘civilisation’, confronting untamed beasts in the wilderness, and finally our own beast within’. William Galinsky, Norfolk & Norwich Festival Artistic Director said ‘Wolf’s Child is our major commission this year. This brand new piece of landscape theatre is being created specially for us by one of the world’s most exciting site-specific theatre companies. They have created iconic productions across the world and we’re proud to be bringing them to Norfolk.’ Norfolk & Norwich Festival enjoys an ever-growing national and international reputation for innovative and inspirational events. It is one of the UK’s big four arts festivals and one of the oldest, being able to trace its roots back to 1772. WildWorks create site-specific theatre that responds to landscapes and the stories within them; their most recent piece at The Lost Gardens of Heligan was part of the national 14-18 NOW programme and their critically-acclaimed The Passion with Michael Sheen drew an audience of over 25,000 to the streets of Port Talbot. From their base in Cornwall they have taken work us all around the world, hosting workshops in Palestine, leaping off harbour walls in Newcastle or awakening castles in Belgium. The 2015 Norfolk & Norwich Festival runs from 8th – 24th May. Full info and tickets for all Norfolk & Norwich Festival events at ww.nnfestival.org.uk Box Office 01603 766400

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection Quite a few of the cats that come into care arrive from loving homes for various reasons. Their owner may have gone into a home, or died, they may be moving and cannot take their pets with them or because they have not got their female cat neutered, they now have kittens and as a consequence, more cats than they can afford to care for properly. We also have other cats arriving that have obviously had a home in the past but for whatever reason they now have to fend for themselves as best they can. The female cats often arrive with a litter of kittens and generally speaking neither female nor male cats have been neutered.
As a general rule we blood test mother cats that come into care, plus any strays, to see if they have been infected with FIV/FELV. Although it may seem unlikely that a cat that has arrived from a home could have been infected, we have in the past had cats that blood tested positive for FIV (after all they cannot choose their contacts and the infection is generally transmitted when mating or fighting).

Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
Joe, a lovely friendly lad, who has now been re-homed, came in as a stray and, as he had not been neutered but had obviously had a fight or two, could have been infected but thankfully his test was negative. Pussy Galore, a young mum with three lovely kittens, was not so lucky as her test proved positive for FIV. A blood sample then had to be retested and confirmation has been received that the original test was correct. Her kittens, Domino, Solitaire and Octopussy will now need to be tested. Because they have had contact with the disease via mum, a different test is required which will be done later this month. If their tests come back indicating they are also infected, they will need to find loving homes as indoor cats, either as the only cat or with other cats with FIV. A negative result will however mean they can go to a new home with access to the outside. Apart from the fact that we see so many unwanted kittens, one of the reasons we encourage people to get their cats neutered, is to prevent the spread of FIV and FELV. Cats can also become pregnant from as young as 4 months old, when they are still growing themselves, and apart from the risks mentioned could also require help when giving birth. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880

Springtime Safety
Despite the wet weather the springtime plants are starting to appear. Snowdrops are in bloom and even the daffs are starting to poke their greenery above the surface. It is a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family. Taking a few simple precautions to avoid any plants known to be deadly to pets can prevent a potential tragedy for you and your family this spring. Here are a few common plants to be aware of:
Tulips and Hyacinths -
Tulips contain allergenic Lactones. Lactones are derived from chemical compounds and taste a bit like Whiskey. Hyacinths contain similar compounds. It is the bulbs of these two plants, not the leaves or flowers, which are toxic. There is no antidote if your dog is poisoned by eating a Tulip or Hyacinth bulb, and severe symptoms need immediate treatment.
0 1 6 9 2
Lily of the Valley -
4 0 2 3 0 0
The substance in Lily of the Valley that is toxic to your pet is called cardiac glycosides. If you think your dog has ingested a Lily of the Valley, you should get him to your vet for a checkup as soon as possible. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time please seek veterinary advice. Animal Magic Dog Club based in North Walsham & Norwich offers a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk
Crayford and Abbs have a vacancy for a
Fully Qualified Technician and MOT tester
Daffodils -
If your pet licks or eats any part of a daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower – they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine that can irritate the tissues of the mouth and throat and cause excessive drooling. Lycorine can also trigger a gastrointestinal response like vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. In more serious cases, heart and respiratory problems can occur. Severe symptoms such as these require immediate attention by a vet.
Crocuses -
(not mandatory) This job is a full time position.
Based at our Mundesley branch. Applicants must have All-Makes experience, be a team player, fully motivated and Customer Focussed. Good rates of pay for the right person.
The variety of crocus plants that blooms in the spring is a member of the Iridaceae family. Spring crocuses can cause gastrointestinal upset in your pet, typically vomiting and diarrhea.

Thread lift goes non-surgical
A unique non-surgical facelift from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic
We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.
So what has changed?
Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains - ‘three things’1. The procedure has changed from a surgical procedure to non-surgical. We do not need to use a knife anymore.
2. The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable ones-same as used in fillers.
3. The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.
How is the procedure performed?
No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area.
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
What is the recovery like?
After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days.
There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCIL Free Parking at Sunday Markets in North Walsham North Walsham Town Council is pleased to announce that free car parking will be available in the Vicarage Street Car Park at all Sunday events in 2015, commencing with the artisan market scheduled for 29 March. This follows the agreement of NNDC to offer this car park to the Town Council for a nominal fee. The Town Council is particularly grateful to NNDC’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Rhodri Oliver, and the assets team for agreeing to support this programme through this positive contribution. The first three markets, commencing with the Christmas 2014 market, have been incredibly successful, drawing an increasing number of visitors to North Walsham to visit a strong range of stalls. A number of town centre businesses have also opened on these Sundays, supporting the efforts to bring much needed footfall to the town.
The one downside... Stallholders have been selling out of stock at all three markets held so far – stalls as diverse as pies, beers and prepared chickens have been packing up early, while others have run out of bestsellers or run very low on supplies, and one has even reported sending out for more stock to be brought in. The best advice is to arrive early, and take advantage of the range of refreshments on offer; and while in the town, to visit some of the other shops, attractions and food outlets North Walsham has to offer. The future dates set aside for events covered by the free parking guarantee at Vicarage Street Car Park are (subject to confirmation): 29 March, 26 April, 31 May, 28 June (North Walsham Fun Day), 26 July, 30 August, 27 September, 25 October, 29 November, 20 December (Christmas Market).
Onwards and Upwards for Special Olympics Norfolk
The new Chair of Special Olympics Norfolk is predicting exciting times ahead for athletes across the county with learning disabilities. Nicola Fish, who hails from Norwich, has taken over the reigns following the retirement after four years of previous chair Richard Sanders. She commented "Richard has been an outstanding leader for Special Olympics Norfolk and I'm delighted he'll continue to be involved in other areas with the organisaNicola Fish tion. As the parent of a daughter with learning difficulties, I am delighted to take on the position of chair of the organisation. I am part of a great and committed team of people that are passionate about providing sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities. "My aims, going forward, are to develop our existing sports clubs across the county and look to offer more opportunities for competition as well as working in partnership with existing mainstream sports groups to widen the choice of sports offered by Special Olympics Norfolk. “We have some great Special Olympics athletes within Norfolk, some of whom will be representing the county in national competitions over the next 12 months and possibly Great Britain so it is an exciting time for all of us," added Nicola. Special Olympics Norfolk runs a range of sports for people with intellectual disability across the county, including skiing, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, tennis, cricket and boccia. For more information about competing, sponsoring or volunteering email nicolafish47@googlemail.com or specialolympicsnorfolk@gmail.com or visit Special Olympics Norfolk's Facebook page.

North Walsham Photographic Group’s end of season Awards Ceremony
After an outstanding year of photographs and images by members of the North Walsham Photographic Group, the final Annual Competition was held alongside the yearly Awards ceremony during the last week of February. In the Annual, which was the culmination of the members’ best work, judge Bev Lawton had a mammoth task of judging 106 entries over three categories (Colour Print, Monochrome Print and Digital Image) in about the same number of minutes! Succinct and erudite, he rose to the challenge, and selected a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each category.
was awarded the Hardy Trophy (by Jim Hardy) for the ‘People’s Choice’, voted by visitors to the August Annual Exhibition of Members’ Work. Kevin Osborne won the Myall Natural History Cup for his endearing image of the Water Vole (published in a recent edition); Rachel Farrow took the Keith Whethan Plate for her humorous ‘5 images telling a story’; and Richard Powell was awarded the prestigious Bellenie Trophy, for gaining the highest overall score in both sections of the four quarterlies. Richard won comfortably, eight points clear of 2nd placed Ray Woolcock, who beat Belinda Roll by ½ point.

Council to coordinate commemorative events to mark Centenary of World War 1 More than 20 representatives from key North Norfolk- based organisations attended a meeting at North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices recently to discuss ideas for commemorative events and activities to mark the Centenary of World War 1.
Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, previously indicated at the Council’s Cabinet meeting on 6 January how the Council would act as a co-ordinator and a promoter for events being organised across the region during a period of four years (2015 – 2018) to commemorate World War 1.
The North Norfolk WW1 Network (NNWN) has been set up to create networking opportunities and to help those with ideas and initiatives understand what the Council can do to help them.
Representatives included 11 Town and Parish Councils, four branches of the Royal British Legion, three museums, five local historical societies, historians and publishers, officers from Norfolk County Council’s Record Office (NRO) and the Swanton Morley-based Light Dragoons.
Councillor Glyn Williams said “We had a good turnout of enthusiastic participants for the first meeting of the North Norfolk WW1 Network. All are completely committed to the project which is a great outcome”.
Colin Chambers, Chairman of the Royal British Legion’s North Walsham branch added “The meeting proved to be very productive and useful networking opportunity. It was also pleasing to see four Royal British Legion branches represented; all sharing ideas and working together with the district, town and parish councils.”

Cabinet agreed a budget of £20,000 to support activities at its meeting on 6 January and this will be used during the four year period to:
•
Coordinate and
promote local commemorative activities through dedicated web pages including an events diary running up to the end of 2018 and links to research, funding, voluntary and educational resources.
• A lasting memorial with the official unveiling of north Norfolk-based blacksmith Nigel Barnett’s donated sculpture ‘Poppies in Steel’; a permanent installation to be sited at NNDC’s Cromer Offices during this year’s Armed Forces Week in June.
• Implement a North Norfolk WW1 Pill Box Trail.
Proposed activities include new publications, a district-wide photographic exhibition, WW1 trails, trench cake baking workshops, education projects, exhibitions, civic dinners and a Great War auction.
The North Norfolk WW1 Network will meet again (date to be confirmed) to discuss the development of the current proposals.
The Council is encouraging anyone that is organising a WW1 commemorative event and would like to join the group to contact Sonia Shuter by emailing sonia.shuter@north-norfolk.gov.uk or by calling 01263 516173.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCF reach handicap doubles semi-final
The last fortnight brought a mixture of Cup ties including the quarter-finals of the Handicap Doubles Cup, three of which took place on the same night at the ACT Centre. The closest saw Aylsham B’s John Miller (14), John Hall (17) and Nash Panday (18) host NWSCF’s Carrie Last (26), Andrew Weston (21) and Tom Wardle (23) with the handicaps giving NWSCF starts between 5-9. A third of the way through Aylsham had a slender six point lead and after the fifth battle there was just one point in it – NWSCF had won six of the ten very close sets and were now leading 197-196. The sixth battle changed everything as Weston and Wardle (+7) defeated Miller and Hall 21-5, 21-10 to open up a 28 point difference that Aylsham were unable to recover from – with a further three points gained by the visitors in the seventh battle and both sides winning 40 points each in the eighth, NWSCF sealed their victory with a 320-289 win. Also at the Centre Aylsham C’s Harley Dyson (26), Fletcher Dyson (27) and Becky Wood (29) hosted NWSCD’s Ray Howe (3), Philip Stone (8) and Joe Kirkup (7) in what turned out to be one of the quickest ties in the history of the
competition as the handicaps gave Aylsham starts in the twenties and NWSCD zero room for error. After just twenty minutes of play, Aylsham C had an unassailable 102-34 lead after four sets and after another two sets had been played a sensible decision was made to abandon the remaining twelve dead sets as a series of friendly contests were played in their place.
The round robin stage in the Handicap Singles Cup has also reached a conclusion. A derby in Group 1 saw NWSCF’s Edna Stone (23), Carrie Last (26) and Andrew Weston (21) take on NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott (7), Simon Halliday (6) and Paul Price (8). The match started closely with Stone (+16) edging Elliott 21-18, 21-20. Last’s (+20) 24-2, 21-6 win against Halliday then set the tone for most of what was to come, however a good effort from Price against Stone (+15) saw him claw back the handicap to win 21-20, 21-20 although of course he was only rewarded with a two point gain for the effort! NWSCF won 387-219 and therefore won the group by 190 points. In Group 8, NWSCD were unable to qualify but

NWSCA also failed to qualify from their group, however there was better news for the team as Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner hosted Tom BaldockYaxley, Andy Beane and John Vaughan in the Knockout Doubles Cup quarter-final at Cromer Tennis Club. Warner and Wilson won the second battle from two down against Beane and Vaughan, but a trio of wins in four and a couple of straight set victories saw NWSCA to a 5-1 win. Finally the last quarter-final in the Knockout Singles Cup also took place this week as NWSCD’s Ray Howe, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Rod Goffin and Terry Lawes. Goffin won the opener from two down against Stone and also took a set against Howe, but NWSCD won the remaining games in straight to advance with a 5-1 win.
