Local gymnasts from North Walsham Gymnastic Club achieve Gold, Silver and Bronze at the Norfolk County Grades Competition

On Sunday 1 March, sixteen girls between the ages of 7 and 14 from North Walsham Voluntary Gymnastic Club attended the Norfolk County Grades Competition at the UEA to compete for medals and a place in the Regional final at Ipswich in May.

The day was spilt into three sessions and the club managed to achieve 3 medals, gold at level 2, silver at level 5 and bronze at level 6. All the girls passed their grades, many with a distinction. Head coach Alexis Thurston said ‘this was a fantastic result for the club with some amazing scores and performances on the day, I am so proud of all the gymnasts who took part and they’re all stars in my eyes who train extremely hard all year and are ...Continued p4 dedicated to the sport.

Local gymnasts from North Walsham Gymnastic Club Continued from front page...

Olivia Shingles, Layla Terry, Phoebe Kenny, Tilly Owen, Milly Beasley and Tia Tolbart have also earned a prestigious place in County Squad 2015’.

Alexis, along with the other dedicated coaches and committee members, are hoping to continue pushing the club forward in addition to providing more recreational, pre-school and adult classes. This is only achievable

if the club can expand by setting up their own premises, ideally in North Walsham to help support the rejuvenating of the town.

The club is currently based at the North Walsham Sports Centre and, being voluntary, are continually fundraising, therefore they are extremely grateful to Acorn Properties in North Walsham who have recently and very kindly donated money to help purchase new jackets for the club competitors.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Four year battle to get Happisburgh RNLI Souvenir shop up and running at Cart Gap.

Cart Gap Station. Since then the souvenir shop has been fitted out and stocked. Jacqui Robertson was subsequently appointed shop manager and has worked hard to get volunteers trained and ready for the souvenir shop’s opening on Saturday 21 March. All are welcome to come and admire the Station’s new facilities and hopefully make a purchase. The souvenir shop is open daily 10am to 4pm. The shop stocks a varied and attractive range of souvenirs, Christmas cards and calendars and all the profit from sales go to the RNLI. Jacqui is still looking for volunteers to man the shop. At the end of 2011 the shop at Town Gap closed for the last time before the planned demolition of the Town Gap Lifeboat Station, due to coastal erosion. The souvenir shop was the highest earning small shop in the RNLI for many years bringing in £12,000 per year, which was all down to the hard work of our shop volunteers. 2012 saw the Town Gap Station demolished, and since then the Station has battled to get a new souvenir shop up and running again. In December 2014 a shop was erected next to the

The souvenir shop is well and truly back and Jacqui is looking forward to getting the shop back to the highest earning small souvenir shop in the whole of the RNLI.

One-stop recycling comes to Thorpe Market! St. Margaret’s Church started recycling paper over 30 years ago, storing it in the old stable and manually loading it on to the lorry. This was before the days of Landfill Tax rebates and it had to be sold on the open market, sometimes for very a meagre return.

K C

The current Landfill Tax Rebate Scheme means that the church receives just over £50 for every tonne recycled, which represents a very important element in the survival strategy of our small village church, raising over £1,000 last year.

In recent years, we’ve also been recycling glass, following the local council’s suggestion that we install a glass-recycling bank. Now that the car park has been refurbished, and there are no more potholes and puddles to dodge, we thought it would be a good idea to add a clothing bank to our collection and we warmly invite you to recycle your unwanted clothing and textiles at our new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) clothing bank. SATCoL operates more than 6,500 clothing banks and over 200 charity shops across the UK and all donations of clean and dry shoes (in pairs), clothing, handbags, belts, bed linens, and blankets will be gratefully received.

99% of everything that SATCoL collects is re-used or recycled, with up to 80% being re-worn. Each tonne of textiles that is not thrown away, prevents 3.6 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions and reduces the amount of unnecessary waste sent to landfill. Profit raised from donations also helps to fund The Salvation Army’s valuable work with people who are vulnerable and in need across the UK, including homelessness and addiction services, care for older people, help at emergency incidents, support for adult victims of human trafficking and a Family Tracing Service. Over the last five years alone SATCoL has presented over £39.5 million to The Salvation Army.

Tom Richardson, area representative for SATCoL, said “We’re delighted to be working with St Margaret’s Church to encourage re-use and recycling within the community. We hope that the new clothing bank will provide local residents with an easy way to donate their unwanted clothes; it will help us raise millions of pounds for the work of The Salvation Army and divert waste from landfill.” To find out more about what happens to donated clothing and textiles, visit: www.salvationarmytrading.org To find out more about what happens at St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market, visit: www.thorpemarket.org.uk

Are you friendly and outgoing? Do you have a few hours to spare per month? You could change the life of a child or young person.

Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by Norfolk Children’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families. Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adult role models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them. Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding,

support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get to take their young person out on trips and visits to places such as the beach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee. You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving Northrepps Church, (St.Mary the Virgin) the life of children and have some free time on a Geoff and Jennie Cummings-Knight regular basis. (Piano and Voice) For more information please contact Steph or Stephen Richards (Clarinet) Tracey at the Norfolk Independent Visitors ServIan Davis (Piano) ice on 01362 697537 or 07843345740 (Steph) / 07843345734 (Tracey), or

Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “We are confident that with a host of activities to choose from, there really is something for everyone to get involved with and enjoy this Easter. The programme has been developed to enable individuals from across the district to take part in a wide variety of recreational activities. Keep your eyes peeled for the Easter bunny, who will be hopping in to some of the activities to deliver some delicious treats.” The activities will take place across the district from Monday 30 March to Thursday 9 April 2015. Among the events on offer are mix of traditional sports such as netball, trampolining along with more adventurous activities such as rifle shooting and KMX Go Kart Racing.

Programme guides have been distributed to schools in the district and are available from most council facilities. Ingredients

16oz Good quality Chocolate - 2oz Salted Butter - 12oz Granulated Sugar 4 Large Eggs - 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence - 2oz Cake Flour Pinch of Salt - 14oz Chocolate Chips - 4oz Pecan Nuts Chopped and Toasted

Method

Melt the 16oz of chocolate and set aside. With an electric mixer combine the sugar and butter, add the eggs then add the Vanilla, salt and flour. With mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted chocolate and add chocolate chips and pecan nuts. Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop or two tablespoons scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes. This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

Lucy developed the concept for the shop after managing several house renovations. She felt there was a real opening for a home interiors and gift shop focusing on selecting items that are a bit different. The ideal space became available at Alby Crafts and Gardens offering not only the space, but a real atmosphere alongside skilled crafts people, interesting shops and a fantastic Tearoom. Lucy’s Handpicked Home centres round the idea of finding individual items and displaying them in an inspirational environment. The shop will have an extensive collection of products from furniture, cushions, china and candles to children’s toys, pyjamas and accessories. The products for the shop are British and handmade where possible and always from fair trade companies.

Norfolk Based World War 2 Drama comes in to Land at North Walsham

East Theatre Company will be bringing their new wartime drama ‘Parachute’ to The Atrium, North Walsham on Friday 3 April at 7.30pm, with support from the arts and community development charity Creative Arts East.

2nd Lt Jimmy Finch is the navigator of a B24 heavy bomber, a brash and charming American who has a limitless supply of oranges and chewing gum. Welcomed into the home of a local farming family, the story explores the startling impact his arrival brings to the fragile relationships at Box Farm!

'Parachute' is a funny, thought-provoking and moving play set at a time when rural Norfolk welcomed ‘The Friendly Invasion’.

You can see ‘Parachute’ at The Atrium, North Walsham on Friday 3 April at 7.30pm. This event is organised in partnership with Creative Arts East with funding by Norfolk County Council, Arts Council England and North Norfolk District Council. Players Success Once Again!

The North Walsham Players pantomime this year was ‘Aladdin’ and was staged at North Walsham Community Centre over two days.

It featured a cast of 21 including special guest belly dancers Sharon Humphrey and Susan Howes.

This was the Players 15th Pantomime since they formed back in 1998. This year’s show saw Aladdin being played by Tanya Williams, Princess Yasmin played by Lorna Cracknell and the wicked Abanazer played by Philip Stone.

The show was directed by founder member Colin Jeary, who also played the part of Wishee Washee.

Colin said he was very happy with the way the cast gelled well together in the musical panto. He added some people would not believe that we only rehearse twice a week for 8 weeks prior to the show, which equates to basically 16 hours!

Obviously no show can be performed without the backstage and technical crew too and they were kept on their toes by endless sound effects and special effects, including a flying champagne bottle. The great looking backdrops added to the magical effect of pantomime.

Colin added that thanks were also due to the local businesses who supported the group - these included Café Kitale, Garden Care, Andrea’s Photography, Train-tech.com, A+M Shoes Ltd, Paul Oakes Collectables, MW Motor Services, J C Photography and Carl Bird Ltd.

Council consults on development of Leisure Facilities Strategy

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) held the last of its planned consultation evenings earlier this month in Cromer to consult with stakeholders, including sports clubs, facility owners/management, individuals with a sporting interest and local members, regarding the development of its Leisure Facilities Strategy.

The Strategy is being developed to provide NNDC with options for future provision of sports and leisure facilities across the district. Four consultation meetings have taken place in locations across the district, all of which have helped inform the development of the Strategy. Ensuring the Council has a strategy document in place is part of future service and budget planning and is essential if NNDC or local sports clubs are to apply for any external funding from organisations such as Sport England and the Lottery Fund.

48

Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sports and Leisure Services, said “The final meeting, as with the other consultation meetings that we’ve undertaken, was very successful and encouraged plenty of useful, healthy debate. “The information we have gained has been incredibly helpful to the Council and has ensured that we have a full understanding of what the current indoor sports provision is, and what the key issues for sport and recreation organisations are. This will help us plan for what is required over the next five to ten years.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

We were entertained at our February meeting by the Den Barrie Duo. Members met at the Community Centre where they sang a medley of songs from the 50s & 60s and a couple of country & western songs. The Den Barrie Duo are great entertainers and it was a pleasure to have them opening our new year. They have been coming for quite some time now and always please us with their different material.

It was our AGM on Thursday 5 March and although we were lacking in members, everything went off well and the members present voted the committee back in for another year.

Our committee are a dedicated group of people that all have their jobs to do and they do it well. We also had Richard visit from the NNAB to show members new appliances available to have in the home. Some of these appliances are quite expensive but to someone who is blind, they are worth their weight in gold.

Our fund raising this year has got off to a flying start! From two raffles and our second hand clothing stall, we have raised ÂŁ90. We would like to thank all our members for all their donations, be it items of clothing or raffle prizes, and for their continued support.

NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER BARNHAVEN PRIMULAS Every garden centre, superstore and market stall is currently full of primroses, polyanthus and primroses in their many forms. The appearance of trays of these highly coloured plants is a sure sign that we are leaving winter behind us. Every year the flowers seem to get bigger and the colours brighter. These plants certainly make an impact when planted in tubs or other containers but flowers with more subtle gradations of colour, and which more closely resemble the wild species from which they derive, are perhaps better choices for planting in the garden borders.

I have always been a great admirer of the Barnhaven Primroses originated by Mrs Florence Bellis (1906-87) in Oregon, USA , who dedicated years of work to hybridising these flowers. Mrs Bellis managed to produce plants in a rainbow of colours whilst retaining the richness of scent and the traditional primrose charms and elegance. Hardy in cold climates, winter blooming in mild these primroses bring a thrill, when after a grey winter, the fresh green leaves unfurl, the fat buds rise from the crown and

the flowers open. Clean, brilliant, sparkling colour and soft, luxurious shades that fill the surrounding air with scent that reminds some of violets, pansies and freesias. The full story of the work of Florence Bellis is told in the latest edition of the RHS magazine ‘The Garden’ where there are also many pages of photographs of her wonderful creations but her story is an intriguing one which bears some repetition here. She began her work in the 1930s, in the depths of the Great Depression. She moved into a derelict barn on a sloping site alongside Johnson Creek in Gresham near Portland, Oregon naming her new home Barnhaven as she felt safe there. There was no electricity, just kerosene lamps. Legend has it that in 1935 she spent her last five dollars on packets of seeds from Suttons Seeds in England, including Munstead strain (developed by Gertrude Jekyll) and two of Sutton’ reds. From this beginning she produced ranges of plants such as ‘Grand Canyon – brilliant coppers, coffee, all spice – true browns of heavy crepe or velvet substance and often gold edged’ and ‘Indian Reds – clean, flaming scarlet, orient red, vermillion, crimson – stunning colours, violent as war paint’.

I have just managed to buy a second hand copy of her book ‘Gardening and Beyond’ and in it she describes how, on a spring day at Barnhaven, ‘I sat on a footbridge over a creek and looked with stars in my eyes, at my first primroses blooming along its banks under the catkined alders’.

In 1966 Mrs Bellis announced that the time had come for her to ‘hang up her shovel and her hoe’. For the first time in over 30 years, the pollinating sheds at Barnhaven fell empty. However she decided to return her stock to England and she chose a couple who ran a nursery in Kendal, Westmoreland to continue her work. The nursery has changed hands several times since then and currently much of the supply of Barnhaven seeds and plants comes from Brittany. (www.barnhaven.com) Primroses are very hardy and enjoy a situation under deciduous shrubs and trees, that give them full sun in winter and cool, summer shade. They prefer good soil that does not dry out in summer. Splitting plants every three or four years keeps them vigorous. You can divide immediately after flowering or in the autumn. The work of Mrs Bellis and the other hybridisers have brought us a wonderful array of plants to brighten our spring gardens and it is worth looking beyond the mass displays in the various garden outlets for these more unusual primroses. Peer review praises North Norfolk District Council for its strong and clear strategic direction

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has recently undertaken a peer review for an independent, objective assessment of its performance, particularly focusing on economic growth and housing.

The review found that NNDC is a strong and ambitious council which through innovation is improving services to benefit local residents and businesses whilst stimulating growth. It was also recognised that the council has a strong and visible political and managerial leadership with a clear strategic direction and alignment of resources.

The government has removed the requirement for compulsory assessments. However, NNDC prides itself on improving performance and invited a peer team from the Local Government Association comprising of experienced councillors and officers from outside the area to undertake an open and transparent review.

Particular praise was given to: • The council’s exemplary response and leading role in the 2013 storms which demonstrated strong community leadership and resilience. • The successful push on empty homes which is providing additional housing for residents. • It’s commitment to working well with Town and Parish Councils, for example, the close liaison in response to the Fakenham fire in May 2014, flood relief and the storms of 2013 where the Council “moved heaven and earth”. • Being an ambitious council with a positive attitude for change and strong record of achievement by working in new ways. • The council’s spirit of innovation as evidenced by the eastlaw legal service which has been described by partners as “excellent” in providing in-house and external services. • Introducing a ‘housing incentive delivery scheme’ that works with developers to promote development and where appropriate, relax affordable housing requirements which has stimulated the number of houses built in the district.

• Positively intervening to retain local businesses and their expansion requirements. A good example of this was the council’s support to the expansion of Kinnertons in Fakenham. This created 90 new jobs and new investment of £25m into the local economy.

The purpose of the review was also to identify recommendations for improvement in the areas of economic growth and business transformation. Suggestions for improvement included:

• Ensuring broadband in the district remains competitively fast and attractive for future investment. • Consideration to develop a distinctive place and brand that markets the area. • Whilst it was recognised that the economy of North Norfolk is comparatively strong, there are still considerations to improve this even further with an economic growth strategy.

Chief Executive of NNDC, Sheila Oxtoby, said: “We welcome the findings from this review which helps to shape our plans for the future. It is gratifying that this independent review has found that we are a strong and ambitious council with some notable successes.

“These achievements haven’t happened by themselves and I would like to take this opportunity to thank both staff and members who have worked hard through challenging times.”

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC’s Leader, said: “We want to ensure the council remains in a strong position whilst focusing improvements in the most appropriate areas which will benefit local growth and investment in the district. The council already has strong examples of achievements from intervention such as with major employers in Fakenham, however we take on board the recommendations that the council should continue to deliver, do it better and push the fact that we are ‘open for business’.” The full peer review and findings will be published on the council’s website, www.north-norfolk.gov.uk

Rock Buns & Rolling Pins WI

February’s meeting was a bit different to other meetings and we were all very hands on.

Our speaker was Coral Batchelor, our WI adviser and a dual member of Sheringham Evening WI and Roughton WI. Coral provided us with a very interesting demonstration on sugar craft. She has been cake decorating for approximately 15 years and started due to her parents-in-laws golden wedding anniversary and the desire to make and decorate their cake. At the time Coral regularly assisted her neighbour who was a florist, with flower arranging. This gave Coral a head start when attending her classes. We were able to have a go at making a rose using edible modelling paste and a plastic tool with a ball on the end which when rolled over the shaped paste gave a very effective edge to the petals. We used corn flour on the work surface to stop the paste sticking (icing sugar would have made the paste too sticky). The petals were fixed to a pre-formed bud with edible glue. We were also able to paint and put together an orchid The orchid petals were already prepared by Coral, mounted on thin wire. We fixed them together to form the flower using florists' tape and then 'painted' them by gently brushing on our choice of coloured dusts. It was clear that this was very delicate work and required a degree of concentration and patience. An enjoyable experience was had by all.

Visitors are very welcome at our meetings, we just ask for £4 to help with meeting costs. Complimentary tea and cake provided at all meetings. For more details, find us on Facebook , follow us on Twitter @RockBunsWI or visit our website at www.rockbuns.wordpress.com. You can also email the Secretary bbarnes4tcb@aol.com.

As any pet owner will know animals, like people, are all different in their habits and personalities

They vary in how gregarious and sociable they are and the ways in which they interact. A classic example is how different dogs approach others and how they play and socialise. The two spaniels in the photograph below were not fighting, they were just boisterous in nature and enjoying a spot of ruff and tumble (excuse the pun!). For those dog walkers amongst us it can make life a little tricky in terms of predicting how our dogs may respond to others and vice versa, but there is much we can do to help them along the way. As puppies, there is a period of time, known as the ‘socialisation window’, that lasts around 16 weeks and is imperative for a dog’s social develop-

ment. During this time, puppies are much more responsive to new environments, dogs and people and, if introduced in a controlled environment, are much less likely to develop fear or aggressive behaviour. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but the first four months are a vitally important time and, as owners, we should do everything we can to ensure our pets are properly socialised.

BEER, EASTER EGGS AND SHANTYMEN – ALL AT THE MUSEUM OF THE BROADS

Some of you will know the connection between the Museum’s steam boat, ‘Falcon’, and Lacon’s Brewery of Great Yarmouth. But do you know the difference between ale and beer, where local pubs had a smoking ban 450 years before the current legislation, or that Coltishall, not Woodbastwick, was once the centre of brewing in Broadland?

Well, to find out this and more, and to soak up the atmosphere of brewing through the centuries, don’t miss our 2015 exhibition, ‘Beer – Broadland’s Breweries Past and Present’. Discover the history of brewing, its impact on Norwich, Great Yarmouth and the Broadland village of Coltishall. Look at today’s regional and micro-breweries, and the science of brew-

ing. It all happens from April.

And there’s something for the younger members of the family too with the Museum’s Easter Trail. Follow a fun trail around the Museum and win an Easter prize at the end. The Trail runs from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Or come along Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to take a river trip on our steam boat, ‘Falcon’.

The excitement doesn’t end there! If you like shanties, folk songs, and a bit of cheeky fun, come to Hoveton Village Hall on Friday 10 April for an evening with the Sheringham Shantymen. Tickets cost £10, from

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Our new season has now started with a bang! As some of you will have noticed work on the second bed in Grammar School Road is progressing well. We were fortunate enough to have secured some help from some wonderful people from Worstead Lodge who worked so hard digging this area and clearing it of the dreaded ‘horse tails’. Our thanks do indeed go to them.

the Museum in advance, or on the door, and there is a bar available too. Be there from 7pm for a 7.30pm start. You won’t forget it! The Museum shop sells items handcrafted by local artists, our café sells light refreshments and you can picnic by the river. We are open daily from 10am to 4pm until 01 November. Wiltshire Farm Foods. Just heat, and eat.

Some planting was carried out on 17 March, but the main planting will be done at the beginning of May.

Our Spring planting will commence on 1 June and this year we really do need some extra help. Several of our long time helpers have had to leave us due to illness (we are all getting older) and we need some new folk to help with the planting and maintenance programme for this summer. Apart from the main planting fortnight we only ask that you help on a Tuesday morning from 10am until 12noon, even this is open to change if you would like to work on an area say, during a summer evening. One of our helpers would be happy to come with you if this would be of assistance. Due to a change in our range of plants, our maintenance work now consists mainly of weeding and deadheading with shrub pruning mostly in the spring and autumn.

Our next Coffee Morning and Plant Sale in St Benets hall will be on 23 April. We will be selling coffee, tea and hot chocolate, together with fruit and cheese scones and cakes. A raffle will also be held and Christine Boggis from Orchard Farm Plants will be on hand to give advice and sell plants.

See you there then. Contact Marion Lane 01 692 405211 and Muriel Moorhouse 01 692 400717 for more information. North Walsham Times 467 March 28th 2015

Millfield Welcomes Holland!

The pupils of Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, enjoyed a fun filled day learning all about Holland as part of their International Challenge Day.

The children and staff dressed in the traditional colours of Holland, red, white and blue and Holland’s football team colour of orange! Millfield was honoured to have Ms Kirsty Moore, a teaching student from Holland who has been at Millfield over the last term teaching children about the language and culture. Ms Moore helped organise the day with classbased activities, which included making tulips, model windmills, Dutch games played outside, words and phrases and tasting traditional foods. The children even took to copying Van Gogh and trying different art techniques to create wonderful pictures.

At lunchtime the school hall was filled with the aroma of meatballs and pancakes with many of the children trying a traditional Dutch Lunch. Ms Moore, who has now returned home, said “Thank you very much for making me feel so welcome. I have really enjoyed my time with you and I have learned so much. I will always remember my time at Millfield!”

Millfield’s Cross Country Champion!

Three pupils from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, who had qualified for the County Cross Country finals at Greshams in Holt, braved the cold and dug deep for their races.

Jak Reynolds, who had come first in the Year 4 boys’ race at the qualifiers, was rearing to go again to retain his lead at the top. The 1200m race started at a fast pace, with Jak leading from an early stage and Oscar Warburton, who was also one of the Year 4 qualifiers, not far behind him. Jak led up the finishing straight in top gear with a convincing lead to win the race! Chelsea Crowley, who was competing in the Year 6 girl’s race and ran 1600m distance, was up against some stiff competition and gave it her best, making Millfield very proud of her tenacity and determination. Mrs Herd, a teaching assistant and qualified P.E instructor, took the children to the competition and came back singing their praises, “Millfield should be very proud of these children, not only for getting to the finals but also for their impeccable behaviour at the venue” she said.

Crayford and Abbs Nissan at Bodham are pleased to have raised £250 for Red Nose Day earlier this month.

The money was raised by offering a car wash with donations to Red Nose Day. In conjunction with North Norfolk Radio, we

also offered Woodfields School in Sheringham free face painting to three of their classes – this was much appreciated by the pupils and fun was had by all. Nicki from NNR was superb and made a lot of very happy faces come alive!

The Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band’s popular monthly events at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, continue to draw enthusiastic audiences. The gigs are usually held on the first Sunday of the month but in April and May they will move to the second Sunday, ie 12 April and 10 May. We can also tell you that the band will perform at The Crown Inn, Banningham, on Easter Monday, 6 April. All gigs start at 1.30 p.m. Admission is free and you can simply drop in for a drink and enjoy the music at either venue but if you would like a table for lunch it is essential to book. The telephone number for The Crown is 01263 733534 and The Goat is 01692 538600.

We are also pleased to tell you that Jazz at The Hub (the bar at Sheringham Little Theatre) continues to play to capacity audiences and Phil Brooke, one of the region’s finest guitarists, takes centre stage on Sunday 19 April at 7.30pm. Phil is highly regarded by other musicians. He is comfortable playing a variety of styles and he will re-visit the music of some of the exponents of the guitar in jazz trios. People such as Herb

Daniel Williams, Chief Executive of Big C - Norfolk's Cancer Charity, has announced that he will be standing down from this position at Big C later this year, after eight years in post. Daniel will be building his own consultancy, ‘YourNorfolk’, focusing his experience across the wider spectrum of voluntary sector activities in the County.

Philip Blanchflower, Chairman of Big C, says “During Daniel's time with us Big C has expanded its income and activities very considerably. Whilst continuing to provide funding for research, including its recent £250,000 grant towards the Bob Champion Research & Education Building; it has developed its support and information services for patients and families, opening centres in Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn, and expanding activities at the Big C Centre at NNUH. The Trustees feel a deep sense of gratitude to Daniel for his outstanding leadership in achieving this success, and he carries our best wishes in his new undertaking." Daniel says “The experience of working with inspirational Trustees, staff and volunteers, and of being able to contribute to the Big C story is one that I will always treasure. My greatest inspiration has been the bravery and determination of so many of those affected by cancer themselves to make a difference for those that follow”.

Big C, Norfolk’s Cancer Charity, is a completely independent charity, committed to improving the lives of those affected by cancer in Norfolk. Together with the local community, Big C funds world class research into cancer at the UEA and Norwich Research Park, as well as cutting edge diagnostic and treatment equipment for Norfolk’s hospitals.

Big C also runs cancer support and information centres in Norwich, King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth, that offer practical and emotional support for anyone affected by cancer, including carers, friends and families, at a time when they need it most.

SUCCESS TASTES SWEET FOR LOCAL MARMALADE MAESTROS The results are in, and a growing Norfolk business has emerged triumphant for the second year running from the World’s Original Marmalade Awards. Ollands Farm Foods, based in Happisburgh, has scooped three awards at this year’s ceremony, held at the Dalemain Mansion and Gardens in Cumbria on 1 March. Their Seville Orange Marmalade with Whisky brought home a silver award in the Artisan Awards category, with both their Seville Orange Marmalade and their Lemon and Lime Marmalade taking bronze awards in the Artisan Awards category. Mary Ann Stuart, owner of Ollands Farm Foods, is thrilled with the recognition. “Entries to the awards are welcomed from across the globe, so we’re really proud to be amongst those considered the very best. We love what we do and are fortunate that we regularly get lovely feedback from our customers at local farmer’s markets. But it does feel great when our efforts receive an official stamp of approval she said. All Ollands Farm Foods marmalades, jams and other preserves are made by hand in small batches using traditional methods and it’s this attention to detail which Mary Ann believes gives them the edge. 22

We’ve teamed up with several local hotels and B&Bs who are now serving our marmalades to their guests at breakfast, and we’d like to see more businesses supporting local producers in this way. We’ll keep doing our bit to try and get Norfolk food producers on the map. But it’s not all about awards. Our favourite feedback on our marmalade came from one of our customers who thanked us for a ‘happy breakfast’. That’s the kind of response we really like to hear!

Blickling celebrates WI Centenary with Norfolk Belles performance

On Saturday 8 August, Last Night of the Blickling Proms will have more than one special anniversary to celebrate at its 1940’s party. Not only will it be marking the 75th anniversary of the Blickling Estate becoming part of the National Trust, but it will also be celebrating the WI Centenary with a very special performance by the Norfolk Belles.

The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. Since then, the organisation has grown to become the largest women's voluntary organisation in the UK with over 212,000 Members. It was set up to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation; education and the sharing of skills have always been at the heart of the WI and this remains true today.

The Norfolk Federation itself has 165 WIs with over 5000 members and continues to grow. In the run up to the centenary celebrations, the national federation launched a ‘Singing for Joy’ competition for all WI members and so the Norfolk Belles were formed. The choir has approximately 25 members led by professional musical director Margaret Collingwood. The

North Walsham & District Historical Society

At our February meeting, the delightfully named Polly Ploughman gave us a fascinating talk on buttons. Polly is a member of the British Button Society and her interest in buttons was first piqued when given her Grandmother’s button box. From her extensive collection, Polly had brought with her over 1,000 buttons.

Early buttons were very simple, made of bone, wood etc. and until the Industrial Revolution, buttons were still hand-made and accordingly expensive. It was the men who wore the buttons. These days ‘celebs’ parade their wealth with flashy cars etc whereas in the past the men showed off by flaunting their expensive, hand-made buttons! We saw embossed leather buttons plus some wonderful ‘vegetable ivory’ buttons, carved from the smooth, grain-free tagua nut, which resembles elephant ivory.

With the invention of plastics, in the mid 19th century, new button types started to appear. Celluloid was easily moulded and stunning amber effects could be achieved by adding ground-down fish-scales to the plastic. Over the years, as women’s buttons became more flamboyant, men’s became plainer. ‘Button Bling’, in the form of beautifully detailed jewel

buttons, known as “Gay '90s", were worn from c.1890. This was the Victorian ladies’ reaction to their Queen’s continued wearing of mourning black after the death of Prince Albert 30 years previously! Polly also showed us buttons, from the early 20th century, painted in green, purple and white. These were the colours of the suffragettes so a wife could surreptitiously support the movement without her husband knowing.

Then there were the ‘Dainite’ washable and unbreakable rubber buttons which didn’t need to be cut off garments before they went through the washing mangle!

After showing us more wonderful buttons made of mother-of-pearl, glass, copper, casein and Bakelite, Polly finished her talk by urging all of us to hang onto our buttons, whether old or new.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Thursday 2 April in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when Mary Gurteen will be talking about the history of the Norfolk dialect. Visitors are warmly welcomed. Diana Velhagen

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Domino, Solitaire and Octopussy, the kittens mentioned last time, have now been blood tested and we are at present waiting for the results to come back. We will advise you of the result in the next issue.

If you include the cats that arrived last year, but were still with us in January, we have had 71 cats in care this year, 35 of which have found loving new homes. 36 of the total of 71 were signed over to Cats’ Protection by someone who was not their owner but was concerned for their welfare.

We are aware from their history that some of these did indeed originally have homes but for whatever reason their owners had abandoned them. This was the situation with a colony we dealt with last year where the owner of the adult cats, none of which had been neutered, were left when the people moved. In another instance, a mother cat had taken up residence on a car park where cats were being fed regularly by a member of the public. It is easy in these circumstances to identify the cats as being genuine strays and not just one of those that likes to wander. When a cat turns up in someone’s garden it is essential to make appropriate

Pet Health Plans

checks to ensure that there is not an owner in the neighbourhood and that we are not “stealing” their pet. This is because, in law, a cat is regarded as being the ‘property’ of the owner and to take it would be regarded as theft in the same way as any other property. Obviously, if the cat is in danger or requires attention we can take it in if we have the room, without making the necessary checks. In these instances we would hope the owner, if there is one, would contact us to enquire whether or not their cat has been handed in. We would Sweep, who was living as a stray after his not attempt to re-home the cat straightaway in case it had an owner went into a home owner. We have in the past had cats brought to us as they look quite frail, only to find that the cat is actually well loved and receiving attention for a medical condition from their vet.

Did you know at Miramar vets you can cover your pet for preventative healthcare with our monthly payment plan – Pet Health Plans. From as little as £12.00 per month for dogs, £11.00 per month for cats and £7.40 per month for rabbits, your pet will be protected against infectious diseases, fleas, ticks and worms throughout the year. On the plan they will also benefit from: • Annual boosters • Kennel cough vaccination (dogs only) • Year round flea and worm control • Annual 10 point health check with Veterinary Nurse • Fly strike prevention (rabbits only) • Microchip checks • Nail clipping with Veterinary Nurse By being on the Pet Health Plan you will also save £50 annually on the total cost of your pet’s preventative health care That’s not all………. Your pet will also receive: • 50%off Microchipping • 10%off routine neutering • 10% off routine dental procedures • 10% 0ff in-house blood tests • 10% off clinical and life stage Royal Canin food bought from the practice • 10% off all pellet Excel food bought from the practice • 10% off all long term prescription drugs brought from the practice (starts in the 4th month) To sign up for the monthly payment plan call into the surgery or ring Freephone number 0800 169 9958 to speak directly to the Pet Health Plan team

Generally speaking, efforts and checks always need to be made to make sure the cat is a stray. Enquiries to the local vets, checking with all the neighbours and putting a paper collar on the cat are the usual ways to do this and are very often successful. It can be as simple as a recent case where the cat had moved to the area and had lost its bearings or, in another instance, where the cat liked to wander but still went home regularly. However, by making these checks we can identify the genuine strays (like Joe who was mentioned last time). Whatever the circumstances, when dealing with strays, we always hold them for a short while just to make sure there is no owner out there. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). CROMER NEEDS A NALU BEAD!

Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ company Nalu Beads, will be running a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer! Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe & Worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that characterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place. The beads are hand made by skilled artisans using Murano glass that’s sourced from Italy that helps to create that unique finish to each bead. Normally the designs are done by Nalu Beads themselves, but this time it’s up to you! Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘Nalu beads are that special memento from the surf destinations you love; they reflect everything magical about that place’. ‘Our aim is to create an amazing bead that is unique to Cromer, but we want the design to come from the people who live here or visit here, those that are

the most passionate about the area’. Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis is delighted to be involved with the competition ‘We’re really excited to be teaming up with Wet Dog to run a competition to ‘Design a bead for Cromer’. These competitions are always really popular, it’s a great way for people to get involved in the creation of a Nalu Bead for somewhere that means so much to them.’ Entry forms will be available in Wet Dog, Tucker Street, Cromer as well as a version to download on Nalu Beads’ own website. The start date is 27th March with the closing date for entries on 17th April. The winning design will be selected from the top five entries and the winner will be presented with their new bead together with a selection of existing Nalu Beads worth £100.

THUMBS UP FOR 'BIRDSEYE' WAGON RESTORATION Volunteers of the M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) have successfully completed the restoration of a unique 'Birdseye' wagon, believed to be the only one in the country. The recently overhauled wagon was launched over North Norfolk Railway's recent Spring Steam Gala and will now be a permanent addition to the Railway's demonstration freight train. To celebrate the launch, the NNR volunteer Biz Bizzel dressed up as Captain Birdseye to launch the vehicle into traffic. The wagon is just the latest in a string of restorations funded by the 'Joint Heritage Coach Fund', which restores carriages and wagons with unique East Anglian history to working order. Nigel Scarlett, who spearheaded the project said “It turned out to be a bigger project than anticipated. We ended up making the container entirely from scratch,

using as many salvaged bits from the original as possible.” He added “The highlight has been seeing it in traffic over the Steam Gala weekend. The reaction from visitors and passengers was great. Getting Biz dressed up as Captain Birdseye was the icing on the cake.” A conscious decision was made to paint the container in Birdseye colours because of the rich history it represented. Whilst coal was king in the Midlands and the North East, in East Anglia, agricultural produce and latterly fish were the moneymakers. Millions of tonnes of fish were transported by rail overnight from the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft to markets in London and further afield. Birdseye still operate a factory at Ness Point in Lowestoft. Birdseye were approached to sponsor the wagon, but no response was received. The wagon is a 'Conflat' type (No.B502824) and the container a British Railways 'AF' (No.AF65970B) type. The 'Conflat' was restored in 2011 and the container was purchased from the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in 2014.

Cromer has been voted Pier Of The Year 2015 by the members of the National Piers Society. It previously won the award in 2000. Worthing took second place, with Eastbourne and Llandudno tying for third. Cromer Pier is in its 114th year. It was designed by John James Webster (18451914). Initially a toll of 2d (1p) was levied, rising to 4d when concerts were given on the bandstand. In due course this was roofed over and converted into a roller skating rink. But by 1921 it had become a fully-fledged theatre and welcomed its first concert party, the Rolling Stones! Astonishingly the Pavilion Theatre has survived ever since and is now home to the UK’s last surviving End Of The Pier show, which is produced by Openwide Coastal and runs twice daily for 13 weeks in the summer and 4 weeks at Christmas. Such is its popularity that the theatre’s auditorium has had to be enlarged. Only four other pier theatres survive in the UK. The pier is picturesquely situated below the Victorian splendour of the Hotel de Paris, where Oscar Wilde stayed in 1892 and Stephen Fry worked as a waiter in

the 1970s. Children love to fish for crabs from its decks. An RNLI lifeboat station at the pier head contains a museum and shop. The Pier has been used in films such as Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, and will feature in a forthcoming BBC drama series Partners In Crime, starring David Walliams and Jessica (Call The Midwife) Raine. The pier sustained severe damage during the winter storms of 2013, forcing the cancellation of nearly two weeks’ performances in the Pavilion Theatre. Both the Box Office and Restaurant were destroyed but repairs are almost complete. The National Piers Society’s President Gavin Henderson commented “There’s No Business like Show Business, and Cromer Pier proves it! Congratulations to all concerned.” Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, which owns the Pier, said: “This is a fantastic reward for the significant investment in repairs and refurbishment that has enabled us to return Cromer’s iconic landmark to its former glory”.

First Aid Success at Paston

As part of their Paston Sixth Form College Employability Skills Award, 26 students completed a St John Ambulance course in Essential First Aid. The students now know how to deal with emergencies safely, from accidents involving broken bones and burns, to heart attacks, choking and unconsciousness. Students demonstrated their skills in recognising a range of conditions and treating the casualties, including bandaging, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage. This is the first group of students in 2015 who have passed the award. Over the next few months many more students will be completing the course.

Some of the students are seen here with their certificates after a presentation by Kevin Grieve, Principal and Sandra Emerson, Faculty Leader. Students commented that they really enjoyed the 3hr session, ‘I loved being covered in bandages’ and ‘it was really friendly even though you didn’t know everybody at the start’. Several students commented that they felt more prepared for going to university and employment and living independently, ‘you never know when you’re going to need it’.

Local Brownie’s Birthday Bash

In 1995 Ann Russell started 4th North Walsham Brownies and on Wednesday 4 March they celebrated their 20th Birthday. The girls worked in their groups called Sixes and got stuck into four St David’s Day themed activities – including the same paper daffodil craft that was done on the very first meeting.

The unit leader, Barbara Lines (Brown Owl) supervised the Brownies as they made celebration cards using 3D flowers and stickers. Ann Russell, or Old Brown as the girls call her, helped the Brownies to make paper daffodils. I

was working with the girls to decorate cupcakes. The Brownies went wild with lots of buttercream icing and coloured gel pens – although there were a few sneaky licks of the icing! The assistant leader, Charlotte Hornby, or Snowy Owl to the girls, cut lengths of elastic and the Brownies made friendship bracelets with coloured beads and letters. Brown Owl put one of each craft into

SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« party bags and jumbled them up so the girls each received a craft made by another Brownie.

At the end of the evening, the Brownies all stood in a horseshoe and I was presented with the most prestigious award that a member of Girlguiding can achieve, the Queen’s Guide Award.

It took me less than 18 months to complete all five sections of the award. For my service in guiding, I volunteered with 4th North Walsham Brownies and had active roles in two large scale Girlguiding events. For the outdoor challenge, I completed a 4 day expedition and for my personal skills development, I learnt new techniques of cake decorating. My community action project was on children’s reading and I got involved with local libraries reading to children. Lastly, I attended an archaeological dig for my residential experience.

4th North Walsham Brownies is just one part of the guiding family in North Walsham. There is one Rainbow unit for girls aged 5-7, five Brownie Units, including one in Mundesley, for girls aged 7-10, two Guide units for girls aged 10-14 and a Senior Section unit for girls aged 14-25.

For more information on getting involved in Girlguiding in North Walsham contact Barbara Lines on 01692 406644. Gemma Grimmer

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS

GRESHAM’S WRAP UP TITLE DEFENCE, BUT NWSCA LOOK GOOD FOR SECOND PLACE

Gresham’s School A have won the Premier Division of the North Norfolk League – although it has been on the cards for a while, the team of Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Hubert Cheng confirmed their status as title holders following a 10-0 win away to NWSCD. Each of the hosting trio of Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone took a set from Bennell who saved set-points in the first set of his 15-13, 116, 5-11, 12-10 win against Stone. The two teams met again in the first semi-final of the Knockout Singles Cup with Gresham’s moving into the final with a 5-0 win with Bennell edging Kirkup 11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9. A very busy few days for Kirkup also saw him play up for NWSCB alongside Dennis Elliott and Paul Price away to Outlaws where he defeated Colin Humphries in straight and pushed John Hancock to the limit – the Outlaw winning 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 16-18, 11-9.

Elliott attacked well to beat Rick Edwards 1614, 12-10, 2-11, 11-8 but Outlaws were more or less in control during the rest of their 8-2 win. NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Andy Beane and Howard Lupton also won 8-2 against Backhanders. Other results from the division saw NWSCB beat Poachers 6-4, NWSCD lose by the same score to Backhanders (they came very close to getting a draw) and NWSCA beat Sharks 10-0. The results mean that Outlaws will require a 7-3 win or better in their final match against Gresham’s A to overtake NWSCA and claim the runners-up spot, while

NWSCD have finished the League in fifth position eight points ahead of NWSCB. Both teams have escaped the chop as Poachers and Sharks will be relegated.
