3rd Anniversary for Lunch Club Continued from front page...
The charity started a catering team several years ago catering for events and functions. They soon started providing lunches for residents of Victory Housing properties and then launched regular weekly lunches at Cromer on a Monday and North Walsham on a Wednesday. As well as providing the members with skills and a worthwhile use of their time, the lunches offer an excellent opportunity for people from different age groups and backgrounds to get to know each other. They are also invaluable to the lunch guests, many of whom live alone and are isolated.
Joan Dodimead and Shirley Knightsbridge have been coming from the beginning and say it is something they look forward to all week. There are about 16 guests each week and as many live alone, and look after themselves, they say it is lovely to have someone else to cook for them and to do the washing up.
The guests also say that they like supporting the charity and think that the members are great. For About With Friends the lunch clubs fit in perfectly with their community centred ethos. They work well alongside the Community café in Tucker Street, Cromer, which recently celebrated its first birthday.
A hot two course lunch plus hot drinks cooked and prepared by About With Friends’ members costs just £6. Transport can also be arranged for a small cost (Typically £1 -£2). Recent menus have included Shepherd’s Pie, Chicken Pie and Roast Beef.
However, the delightful food is just one aspect of these lunch clubs. The chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones is a popular part but of the clubs but the raffle and bingo are also well-received.
Although the lunch clubs are already popular there is always room for more guests. If you are interested in trying them out please call Jenny on 01263 515230.

I wanted to push myself and do something special to help raise money for such a good cause. “Supporting Sense means supporting a vision for a world in which all deafblind children and CORNISH WAY BUSINESS PARK PARK adults can lead full and active lives in our society. The work they do is amazing and I would welcome anyone who wishes to support me and in turn help me to help a deafblind child tell his NORTH WALSHAM mummy "I love you" for the first time.” 01692 400900 Richard Kramer, Sense Deputy CEO added “The very best of luck to Ms Oxtoby with her first www .dlhautorecyclers.co.uk marathon effort! Cookery demonstrations return to Aylsham Market Place
Cookery demonstrations are making a return to Aylsham Market Place this summer! Such was the success of last year’s events, when top local chefs showed of their skills to enthusiastic audiences, that the Town Council has asked the Cittaslow committee and Slow Food Aylsham for a repeat series.
Starting in May, the cookery demonstrations will be held on the first Saturday of each month, coinciding with the town’s FARMA-accredited Farmers’ Market. Chefs will have a free rein to cook anything they wish but they will be asked to source their main ingredients from the market or local shops.

Chair of the Cittaslow committee Giles Margarson said he is delighted to help bring the cookery demonstrations back to the town. “Last year’s events were a great success,” he said, “and the Council and market stallholders were very keen to see them back this year. We are lucky to have so many great chefs locally who we can call on to showcase their skills and promote local food. And as always it‘s a pleasure to work with Slow Food Aylsham who bring their own food-related expertise.”
The first chef in the 2015 series is local favourite Derrol Waller who always delights the crowds with his quick repartee and Tommy Cooper impressions! Things get underway at around 9am on Saturday 2 May and just like last year, it’s all free for the public, including no doubt, samples of Derrol’s creations.

Quarterly Competition: Hum this image!
North Walsham Photographic Group began their 2015/16 season with the first quarterly competition at the end of March with the theme of Song Titles. Members rose to the challenge in entertaining and amusing ways, the images ranging from classics such as ‘Drink to me only with thine eyes’, ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ through to more modern choices, such as ‘Blurred Lines’ and ‘So Ambitious’. The judge, Malcolm English, entered into the spirit of the theme, but was nonetheless insistent that the song title was accurately reflected in the image and was highly critical if it was not!
There were 3 images which were awarded top score - two of them submitted by the Club’s ‘dynamic duo’, Kev Osborne and Ken Yerrill, who were joint winners not so long ago! Their winning images were ‘Torn’ (Natalie Imbruglia) (Kev) and ‘So Ambitious’ (Jay-Z) (Ken). The 3rd winner was Richard Gambling, unfortunately absent on the evening, but whose image ‘Happy Feet’, from the eponymous movie, was both colourful and joyous! Richard recently took this photograph when he was visiting the annual ‘Lobster Potties’ festival at Sheringham – an unusual angle but one which reflects the song title extremely well.
The next quarterly theme, due to be judged at the start of July, will be ‘Blues’ - a wide-open category which will give huge scope for imagination. If you would like some more information about the club’s activities, please contact the secretary Rachel Farrow on 01692 406526 or email her on NWPGsecretary@yahoo.com
Rock Buns & Rolling Pins WI At our meeting in March, we received a presentation from Slow Food Aylsham followed by the opportunity to take part in their taste adventure.
Slow Food Aylsham are a branch of the international Slow Food movement founded in 1986 and have 100,000 members worldwide. The Aylsham branch works closely with the local schools and the local community running family cooking workshops as well as running themed events throughout the year, including, the taste adventure, cook-a-thons and quiz nights. This year will also see them celebrate their 10th anniversary of the Aylsham Food Festival, a
four day festival of food. Recently a Gala event was run where the catering students from the High School prepared and cooked a five-course meal, they also provided front of house services.
After a brief presentation, we were invited to take part in the taste adventure. There were three types of food to see, three to touch, three to smell and three juices to taste. Some were easier than others, and there were a few surprised reactions when we were informed at the end of the evening of what each guess was. It was an enjoyable and interesting experience and quite a challenge when relying on the senses alone. As there are five Wednesdays in April, we will have

an additional meeting on 29 April where we will be receiving a visit from Queen Bee of North Walsham who will be talking all things fashion. Follow the Puffin 9 – 16 May at The Atrium, North Walsham
As a preview and lead up to this year’s Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, artists from North Norfolk, Broadland and Great Yarmouth are having a Taster Exhibition at The Atrium in North Walsham from 9 to 16 May. The launch evening is on Monday 11 May, 6pm – 8pm. This annual group exhibition gives visitors an overview of up to 70 individual artists’ work in one place before the start of the main event on 23 May. Details of all participating artists and the location of their studios can be found in the Open Studios brochure which will be freely available before and during the exhibition or online at www.nnopenstudios.org.uk. The exhibiton will be open every day from 10am until 5pm except on Sundays and artists will be on hand to greet and talk to visitors. Demonstrations by working artists are planned on the two Saturdays. Guided tours can be arranged and parties are very welcome.
The fabulous light and airy exhibition space at The Atrium has become the regular host for this preview event featuring ceramics, glass, jewellery, sculpture and textiles in addition to framed artwork by local artists.
This year we hope you will notice posters featuring one of Phil Arthur’s distinctive jugs. Phil, who is based in Buxton, makes terracotta slip-decorated bird jugs with influences from both 17th century English slipware and pre-Colombian pottery animals. We have decided to use his ‘Puffin’ to help lead visitors across North Walsham to The Atrium. Follow the Puffin! If you have any queries please contact Berni Marfleet on bernimarfleet@hotmail.com or 01692 403984 or 07979 37 27 37
May at the Museum of the Broads
We have a couple of early summer events next month to link in with the Broads Outdoors Festival.
The first is our Boat and Fishing Jumble Sale on Sunday 10 May. If you’ve just had a spring clean and need to find a home for your unwanted boat or fishing related items then book a stall on 01692 581681. Or maybe you want to browse or just soak up the atmosphere at this popular sale? The fun starts at the Museum from 9am until 12noon. Stalls are £10 and entrance for visitors is £1. Drinks, light refreshments and a burger stall are all available on site.
The perfect way to enjoy your garden this year is to welcome in some of our local wildlife. Find out how and make bird feeders, nest boxes, mini beast houses, plant pots, and much more at our FREE Wild Night at the Museum on Friday 15 May from 6pm to 8pm. Norfolk Wildlife Trust is joining us and our steam boat, ‘Falcon’, will be running, so you can get close and personal to wildlife living in and around the river. ‘Falcon’ costs just £3 per adult and £2.50 per child for a 30 minute trip. This family event is part of the North Norfolk Stories Museums at Night Festival. For full information, see www.northnorfolkstories.org and www.outdoorsfestival.co.uk The Museum of the Broads is open daily from 10am to 4pm and this year’s exhibition is all about beer and brewing in Broadland. Why not pop along and “Make it Stalham”?

Launch of Air Jump at Hilltop causes jumping bonanza This month marked the launch of a new outdoor activity, Air Jump, at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in North Norfolk, which is the first of its kind in England.
Air Jump is a 16 metre (52ft) jumping tower with various height platforms for people to jump off, before free-falling into a giant air bag. It was officially opened by the Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Councillor Brian Hannah who cut the ribbon and Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council who took the first plunge from 10 metres to celebrate. Air Jump has varying jumping heights to choose from, which include two fun level jumps at 4 metres (13ft) and 5 metres (16ft), three high adrenaline

jumps at 7 metres (23ft), 8 metres (26ft) and 10 metres (33ft), as well as a 13 metre (43ft) jump planned for the near future for the most extreme adrenaline junky. Sheila Oxtoby commented: “The addition of this unique and exciting activity at Hilltop Outdoor Centre in Sheringham is fantastic news for local thrill seekers and for visitors looking for an experience with a difference.
“Tourist attractions contribute significantly to the wellbeing of North Norfolk’s economy and I am pleased to see a local business get a great idea off the ground that will not only attract new visitors to the area, but also support jobs for local people!”
The first jump
With a £35,000 investment, Air Jump has been specifically designed for Hilltop Outdoor Centre which will provide schools, businesses and the general public with the chance to take part in the unique activity, only seen before at specialist sports facilities outside of England and at promotional events.
Cllr Oxtoby and Cllr Hannah were joined at Hilltop Outdoor Centre for the launch by the Mayor of Sheringham, Patricia Brooks and children from Sheringham Primary School and Clenchwarton Primary in Kings Lynn
Oliver Read, Director at Hilltop Outdoor Centre said “The idea for this new activity came from a family skiing trip where we first saw a giant air bag being used to practice big ski jumps but with the advantage of a safe landing. It was so much fun that it inspired us to bring something similar to Hilltop. We worked with a specialist company, Bag Jump, to create something unique for Hilltop’s customers, as we continue to develop our reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative outdoor educational Oliver & Helen Reed, Sheila Oxtoby & Martin Reed centres.”

who were lucky enough to be the first schools in England to give Air Jump a try.

Mayor of Sheringham, Patricia Brooks said “This new attraction will add to the amazing experience and adventure which everyone can enjoy at Hilltop in North Norfolk. Air Jump offers an exhilarating experience for children and adults alike. I jumped from the 4 metre platform and my grandson jumped from the top.”
.
He added “While being an activity that is sure to get the blood pumping, it will also help people to develop confidence and social skills as they build up the courage to dive off a platform and land directly into the three metre high air bag.”
Bookings for Air Jump have already been popular with an overwhelming demand from residential school visitors along with members of the public for adventure days during May half term and the summer holidays.

Council welcomes Albert Bartlett to the district North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), are delighted that the former Heinz Westwick factory near North Walsham has been acquired by a growing, international company - Albert Bartlett.
Following the announcement last October that Heinz was considering closure of the factory, NNDC has been offering support and assistance to staff on future employment and retraining options. Support has included organising a careers fair event attended by ten local businesses, offering Heinz staff the chance to sign on to the Council’s temporary employment register as well as offering employability support surgeries and self-employment advice. In addition to this, several meetings involving senior officers and Leader of the Council have taken place with the both Heinz and prospective purchasers of the factory. The contact with Heinz has offered advice and guidance on the forthcoming closure whilst advice and information about potential grants and funding streams have been offered to the new purchasers - Albert Bartlett. Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council said “After all the uncertainty about the future of the plant over the past six months, the news that Albert Bartlett is acquiring the Westwick factory is fantastic and a really positive development for the local economy, whom obviously see North Norfolk as a great place to invest and do business in. Sheila added “Albert Bartlett is a growing, international company and we are committed to offering our fullest support and working with them to ensure the best possible outcome for the local economy and people of North Walsham.

Anita Martin of Norwich Speakers Club was the winner of the International Speech Contest and Marcus Hemsley of Norwich Speakers Club won the Speech Evaluation Contest.

At our April meeting, Mary Gurteen celebrated a Norfolk upbringing in the mid 20th century. Mary was born Mary Howard at Cawston in 1951, one of four children of Jim and Sylvia Howard. Mary peppered her talk with readings from the popular “Boy John Letters, written by Sidney Grapes to the EDP in the 1940s & ‘50s. Mary’s father, who was a noted champion of the notoriously difficult Norfolk dialect, had often read out from the letters.
Her early upbringing was not a time of “mod cons – the pantry was distempered each spring, the toilet was primitive and the council honey cart came around to empty the privy every Wednesday evening. There was no phone and electricity cuts were common. Meat and bread were delivered three times a week – and her mother relished the chance to get gossip from the butcher! As Mary wryly noted, from the Boy John letters, “I don’t like to repeat gossip but what else can I do with it. Mary was taught by Norfolk dialect poet, John Jack Kett at Cawston School. There was no national curriculum, and discipline was firm but fair. Taking part in a burping competition resulted in 100 lines being written out by all guilty parties, “Belching is considered good manners in Eastern Countries but not in Cawston.

Christmas was magical; the Christmas pudding was made just after Guy Fawkes Night using a lighter, war-time recipe that Mary still uses today - and Mary still has one of the first Advent Calendars from 1959 and the family’s tree decorations.
Entertainment, mostly enjoyed outside, was simple - there were go-carts made with planks and old pram wheels, and her brothers dropping Mary, bundled up in a hessian sack, from a tree! Father Valentine made a regular appearance, leaving small presents on the doorsteps for the children: a Norfolk tradition enjoyed by all, including the parents.
Mary gave us a very entertaining talk and, for many, it was a nostalgic walk down memory lane!
Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 7 May in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when Hazel Gillingham will be talking about ‘The Other Florence Nightingale’. Visitors are warmly welcomed.

An Interesting Case
We saw an all too common emergency here at the vets last week. A young cat, Roly, was brought to us seizuring after he had come into contact with a commonly used flea product available in many shops. Roly shares a house with Max, a Golden Retriever dog. Max was treated with a flea product contanining Permethrin. Although safe in dogs, Permethrin is highly toxic to cats, something often not specified clearly on the label. That evening Roly was grooming Max (some cats and dogs do get on very well indeed!) and consumed some of the flea product. Within hours he had started twitching, which progressed to seizures and he was brought to us. We placed him on a drip and treated him with intra-venous anti-seizure medications in an attempt to stabilise his condition. It took a number of hours to effectively manage his fitting, he was hospitalised for a further 24 hours and did not recover fully for 4 days. Fortunately he is back to his usual self now and is showing no signs of lasting effects, but he definitely used at least a couple of his 9 lives as many cats with Permethrin poisoning never recover. Flea treatment is readily available these days online and in shops, pharmacies and supermarkets and although it works to some extent it tends to be ineffective against all life stages of the flea and some can even be dangerous if used incorrectly. Products available in veterinary practices are known as "precription only medicines" and although usually a little more expensive are much safer and more effective at doing what they

Her name was Lola....she was a showgirl!
Next month sees Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society bringing Copacabana to the Pavilion Theatre Cromer Pier stage following the success of 2014's centenary production of Oliver!
Written by Barry Manilow, it is the story of Lola from Tulsa, who arrives in New York with showbiz aspirations. Tony is a bartender and composer who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copa girl in the famous Copacabana nightclub. Lola attracts the amorous attentions of rival night club owner, Rico who abducts Lola and takes her to his club in Havana. With the help of his friends, Tony must rescue Lola before… well, even if you know the song, there are still a few surprises! Featuring Manilow hits including Dancin’ Fool, Who Needs to Dream? Sweet Heaven and ofcourse, Copacabana, this show will have you dancing in the aisles.
Presented by CSODS (Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society), Copacabana will run at Pavilion Theatre Cromer Pier from Saturday 23 to Saturday 30 May with nightly performances at 7.30pm (except Sunday and Monday) and 2.30pm matinees on Sunday 24, Monday 25 and Saturday 30 May. Tickets range from £9.50 to £14 and are available from the Pavilion Theatre Cromer Pier Box Office on 01263 12495.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Although Pussy Galore and Domino are still with us at present, we have said goodbye to some of our long term residents since the last article. Smuts (now Phoebe), a lovely black girl, joined us at four months old and although the kittens had been in a home environment, they had not been socialised and were very timid. Her brothers and sister were quick to respond to the care they received and left for new homes some time ago. Phoebe was reluctant to have contact with her carers but by being patient and not trying to rush her, she began to realise that she could trust us (the little treats did help with this but not with her waistline). Phoebe has now gone to a new home with a lady who already has one cat that needed time to settle. She will let her adjust to her new life at her own pace. Although it does take some cats time to settle they do often surprise us and settle happily straight away.
Felicity (now Fliss) came into care at 9 months old, the same week as Phoebe. She too had received little contact from her owner so was very nervous when she joined us with her mother, four siblings and four younger kittens. Although mum tested positive for FIV the other cats and kittens tested negative and most were soon re-homed (including mum to an indoor home).
However Fliss and her sister Verity have been waiting patiently for someone to realise what lovely cats they are and again, within the week, Fliss, like Phoebe, has been re-homed. We are now hoping someone will come along and choose Verity too. Fliss and Phoebe are beautiful black cats and so is Verity, who is a very gentle girl with a lovely nature. She just needs someone who is willing to give her time to settle because, once she does, she too will make that person a wonderful companion. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.
Verity, patiently waiting to be chosen

The No Drama Llama charity rock concert was created because a member of the group attended a youth forum in North Walsham and felt the focus was on drama, whereas there are lots of teenagers in the town that absolutely hate drama but adore music. Word spread and very soon plans for No Drama Llama’s charity rock concert were progressing. As none of the teenagers knew anything about organising a concert the next challenge was to find someone that did … enter Robin Woodhouse of the Music Hut. Robin was able to help find bands, advertise, find someone to do lighting and sound and much more and the youngsters are very grateful for all he has done.
As some of the founder members of No Drama Llama were members of the Victory Explorer unit, their Leaders also came forward to offer support & help.
Times for the concert proved more difficult than finding the location and the date. It was essential to have an appropriate time for teenagers, something that was not too late but not too early - 7pm - 11pm was judged to be perfect timing as it gave enough time for all the bands to play a few songs and also for the bands to swap over.

When The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway, first opened in July 1990 it had no steam locomotives of its own and had to rely on those borrowed from The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years on the Railway now has five steam locomotives purpose built for the line. During the Everything Goes Weekend, 23rd - 25th May 2015, all available locomotives, coaches and rolling stock will be in action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry. The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection of some of the world’s most powerful 15-inch gauge steam engines on display and in operation”. Train fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Children under 5 travel free.

NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GREENHOUSES
Shape and size
At this time of the year, many people will be considering buying a greenhouse to allow them to grow plants and crops that need more shelter and higher temperatures than are found in the open garden. Greenhouses are seasonstretchers – earlier springs and later autumns. For summer food think tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. In winter they can be filled with hardy salads. Sowing seeds, growing on plug plants, propagation and protecting plants on chilly spring nights are just some of the other advantages. Deciding to buy a new greenhouse is the easy bit, deciding which one to buy is harder. There are greenhouses for every taste and every budget. My golden rule is to buy the biggest and best you can afford – you will never regret it.
The taller a greenhouse is at the eaves, the better the light transmission and therefore the wide the range of plants that may be grown. The eaves should be at least 1.5m tall. The ridge should be at least 60cm above the eaves to allow a door that gives easy access, sufficient slope to shed rain and to encourage loss of excess heat.
Glazing to ground level gives the greatest heat flexibility, but half-walling, using masonry or timber will reduce heat loss.
Ventilation
It is important to ensure that a greenhouse has plenty of windows that you can open to provide sufficient ventilation. Roof vents are also essential, and ideally should be on both sides of the ridge. Automatic vents that open or close in response to greenhouse temperatures can be useful.
Choosing which product to buy Wood or aluminium?
Aluminium is usually the material of choice for a greenhouse, whether in natural metal or with a painted frame. A colourful frame may fit into the garden better, especially if the structure can be seen from the home. Aluminium needs no upkeep, and the glazing bars are thin, casting little shade.
Plastic or glass glazing?
The best glazing material is glass, as it lets 90% of light through and does not degrade in sunlight. Toughened glass should be used for doors and anywhere where people might fall onto the glass.
ventilation and this reminds me of the village blacksmith from Letheringsett, near Holt, named Johnson Jex. His headstone in Letheringsett church, illustrated here, shows the range of this man’s achievements but interestingly back in the 1820s he invented devices for opening windows on greenhouses and conservatories in order to automatically control the temperature and passage of air. VOLUNTEERING AT THE NORTH NORFOLK RAILWAY
IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT STEAM, SOOT, OIL AND GREASE. YOU CAN LEND US A CLEAN AS WELL AS A DIRTY PAIR OF HANDS? The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has launched a new upbeat campaign aimed at attracting people of all ages and skills to help the award winning tourist attraction steam on into the future. The initiative entitled ‘Clean Hands – Dirty Hands’ was launched on Monday 13 April and is aimed at informing people that there is much more to volunteering at the NNR than just getting your hands dirty and that there are many opportunities for people who may prefer tasks that keep their hands clean. New leaflets have been produced with custom made display boards at each of the NNR Stations to inform people who visit the railway how they can get involved. NNR Director John Durrant said “Through research we have discovered that many people think volunteering at the NNR is all about steam, soot, oil and grease but that could not be further from the truth. The railway has endless openings for people who do not want to don overalls such as station staff, waiting staff on the dining train, bar staff on the Muddle and Get Nowhere Buffet Car, administration work, shop staff and helping with our highly successful Santa Specials at Christmas to name but a few of the many opportunities available. Trevor Eady, who is the General Manager at the NNR, commented “Although the NNR is a massive business and has a number of paid staff the railway is mainly operated by volunteers, in fact without them it would not be here. All profits are ploughed back into the organisation, there is no private gain and our
object is to keep trains steaming along the North Norfolk Coast for many years to come. We need people with a wide range of skill sets to achieve this and there has been the false impression that it’s all about getting your hands dirty. By launching this initiative we hope that people who prefer to stay clean will see that the NNR is the ideal place to volunteer and be part of something that is now gaining national recognition in the heritage world” For further information please contact John Durrant on 0791 998 7557 or Trevor Eady at the NNR on 01263 820800 or e-mail j.durrant4@ntlworld.com

Kim our President reminded members of activities that were being held throughout the year at our April meeting - a visit to Gressenhall on 23 July, and also pointed out the possibility of a date change for the Centenary dinner at Scarborough Hill Hotel (this will be confirmed later). The Centenary card competition for this event is A5 size and absolutely any medium you choose.
Carole King, our representative at the AFM held at St Andrews Hall Norwich on 31 March, gave an account of her day with humour and interest. Thank you Carole for such a detailed description and, for those members who were not able to attend, giving us the imagery to experience the meeting.
Our speaker for the evening was Mrs Ruth Smith - ‘The Inconvenience of Loose Elastic’. She gave us an account of her life in the 50's living with her grandmother and two great aunts and, with many amusing anecdotes, she brought back many memories to us all.
Our next meeting is on 13 May. This will be our resolution evening and the competition is for a garden flower. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at St Benet Hall at 7.15pm. With 212,000 members already enjoying WI friendship why not come and join us.

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS CRUNCH TIME ON THE TABLES AS WALSHAM MAKE THREE FINALS
As the season starts to draw to a close, there have been some key League fixtures while all four Cup competitions have reached the semifinal stage. In the First division, NWSCE could only sit and watch a huge clash in terms of relegation – Aylsham B needed four points to overtake them to safety and that is exactly what they got from their final match against Aylsham A losing 6-4 meaning that NWSCE’s relegation came down to a single point.
They could still be saved if the introduction of new teams next season changes the League format but it will be a nervous wait over the summer. Another result from the division saw Gresham’s School B beat NWSCC 8-2. In the Premier division again NWSCA could only watch as Hunworth Outlaws required a 7-3 win or better in their final match against title winners Gresham’s School A to overtake them and claim the runners-up spot, however the match finished as a 5-5 draw meaning that Outlaws finished their League campaign in third place, just two points behind NWSCA. In the semi-final of the Knockout Singles Cup,
Outlaws visited the NWSCA team of John Vaughan, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane with the latter duo the only two players in the match to have played through the exhausting ten and a half hour Championships the previous day – would tiredness be a factor?
tle. After eight of the nine encounters, the score stood at 287 to Aylsham D and 288 to NWSCF.
Steve Patterson won the opener in four against Vaughan before Baldock-Yaxley levelled in straight against Colin Humphries and later won a hard hitting contest against Patterson in five. John Hancock took a maximum with no sets dropped and this combined with a key 11-9, 11-7, 11-9 win for Humphries against Beane at 3-2 in the contest saw Outlaws to a 5-2 win.
In the Handicap Cups, NWSCF have made it to both finals. In the Doubles semi-final, Andrew Weston (21), Carrie Last (26) and Tom Wardle (23) visited Aylsham D’s Roger Crouch (29), Ken Seaman (30) and Neil Edwards (26) in a thriller that went right to the wire. Evenly matched for the first third, a 21-6 eighth set saw Aylsham in the lead by 17 points, but NWSCF made 14 of these back in the next bat-
Crouch and Edwards (+3) took the first set of the concluding battle 21-19 to take the lead, but Last and Wardle won the second 21-10 to see NWSCF win by ten points – 328-318. Brenda Baldock (26) and Edna Stone (23) joined Last in the Handicap Singles Cup semifinal to host LCC Crabs Sophie Mutton (32), Dian Macdonald-Smith (32) and Tim Bending (26). Crabs had starts of up to nine points, but NWSCF only dropped one set in their 376-226 win. They will play Aylsham C in both Handicap Cup finals. Meanwhile it has been determined that Gresham’s School A will meet NWSCA in the final of the Knockout Doubles Cup. One win in straight, four in four and a dead rubber in five saw NWSCA’s Beane, Baldock-Yaxley and Howard Lupton win their semi 6-0 against NWSCD.
