NORTH WALSHAM’S CHIPPY IN TOP FOUR

The THREE COTTAGES FISH RESTAURANT are pleased to announce we have received notification that in this year’s competition to find the best 50 Fish and Chip Shops in the United Kingdom we were one of only four shops to receive a mark of 100% from the independent judges.

Having been judged a top 50 shop last year, we are really proud that the extra effort put in by our staff and ourselves to ensure every customer receives great food and great service has led to this fantastic award. The annual competition, which is run by Fry Magazine, entails an unannounced secret visit by an independent judge who marks each shop on the quality of their food and the service received.

At the Three Cottages our aim has always been to try and serve “the best fish and chips in the world”. A mark of 100% for the quality of our food for the third year running reflects our efforts to achieve this.

North Norfolk estate agents voted the best in the East of England by its customers Harrisons Estate Agents, based in North Norfolk, has been crowned the best estate agent in the East of England at the national ESTAS Awards 2015.

most stressful times in their lives and that’s not an easy job. The ESTAS are about those who have made people happy, put a smile on their face and made a genuine difference to peoples’ lives. These awards help agencies to focus on customer service levels and that’s why firms keep coming back year after year.”

The industry awards, attended by 800 of the country’s top estate and letting agents, determine the best estate and letting agents in the UK. The winners are selected as a result of feedback provided by customers about the service they have received.

Harrisons, which has offices in North Walsham and Cromer, was presented with three awards by TV property expert Phil Spencer.

The North Walsham office was presented with the ‘Best in County’ award and the overall Gold award for the East of England region. The Cromer office was also presented with the Bronze award for the East of England region, resulting in Harrisons scooping two out of three of the top rankings available in the region.

Mark Tunneycliff, managing director at

The awards were presented at a lavish ceremony at the Hilton Park Lane in London last month.

The Harrisons’ team collect their ESTAS awards from TV property expert Phil Spencer. Harrisons Estate Agents, said “This award is extremely important to us because it is our customers who have judged our performance. We were proud enough to have been presented with the regional Gold award and Best in County award at last year’s ceremony. To have retained these titles for the second year running really shows that we are genuinely committed to providing an excellent service.”

Simon Brown, who owns the ESTAS, said “The ESTAS are special because the shortlisted and winning firms are selected purely on the service they deliver to their clients. In fact just taking part shows an agent’s commitment to their customers and to be shortlisted is a great achievement in itself. For the winners this is the highest accolade they can receive in the industry.”

Alex Chesterman, Founder & CEO of headline sponsor Zoopla Property Group, said “This is our sixth year of sponsoring the ESTAS and we are delighted to be once again supporting this key industry event. The ability to collect and act on customer feedback is essential to the success of any business and rewarding those who provide the best service in the industry, as these awards do, is perfectly aligned with our business. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”

Administering an Insolvent Estate

Written by Anna French – Chartered Legal Executive with Hayes + Storr Dealing with the administration of an estate of a friend or family member can be a daunting prospect, particularly if there are a number of debts outstanding and not many assets.

It is very important in cases such as these to ensure that the debts are repaid in the correct order, as failure to do so could result in the Executor becoming personally liable.

If these are sufficient assets to pay all the debts but not to pay all of the legacies and gifts made by the Will, then the estate is “solvent”. All debts must be paid and then the legacies reduced proportionately.

If there are insufficient assets to pay the debts, then the estate is “insolvent”. It is essential for the Executor to obtain full details of all the outstanding debts. The Executor should also consider placing Statutory Notices to creditors in a local paper and the London Gazette. This would provide protection for the Executor if any unknown creditors came forward in the future.

The Executor then needs to prepare a list of the debts. Secured creditors take priority and this includes mortgages registered against properties. The usual course of action would be for the creditor to obtain payment by releasing the security (i.e. selling the property).

Reasonable funeral and administration expenses, which includes legal fees, are next in line and can be paid before other liabilities.

The unsecured debts must then be paid in the order of priority according to the Administration of Insolvent Estates of Deceased Person’s Order 1986.

The first of these are “preferred debts”. These include wages or salary owed by the deceased to an employee. Ordinary debts follow and this includes overdrawn bank accounts, credit cards and outstanding care fees. This is the category where most debts are likely to fall.

The next category is the “deferred debts” and this would include a loan made to the deceased by his or her spouse.

The debts must be paid in the order of priority and so all preferred debts would have to be paid in full before moving down to the ordinary debts and so on.

If there are insufficient assets pay all the debts in one category, then they must all be reduced proportionately and the figures agreed with the creditors. If no agreement can be reached, an application to Court will be needed.

There are complex rules regarding property which is co-owned and passes automatically to the surviving owner, and whether this can also be taken into account when calculating the funds available to pay the debts.

This can therefore be a complicated area and the Executors should do all they can to protect themselves from personal liability. If you find yourself in this position, we would recommend that you take legal advice as soon as possible.

She asks that those attending the workshop bring along a notebook, pencil, and a hand lens or magnifying glass if they have one.

An Act of God’ Rev Paul Cubitt is hoping not to see!

As the completion of the recent restoration of North Walsham’s St Nicholas Church tower finishes, Rev Paul Cubitt and his team look towards the next project, the church windows.

St. Nicholas’ windows are collapsing under their own weight and it is feared that strong winds may be enough to blow the windows in.

Rev Cubitt said “The windows are a huge part of the on-going restoration for the church with an estimated cost of up to £250,000”. The work of specialists will involve the removal and replacement of the old lead that holds the splendid stained glass windows together. “It is the sheer age and weight of the windows that is causing them to fold in on themselves”.

It is hoped that once enough money has been raised, work can start on the WW1 Memorial window at the east end of the church, which remembers the town’s contribution to that awful war. This, the largest of the windows and the most in need of restoration, will cost around £76,000. The first fund raising event to be held at the church will be a day aimed at the town’s children.

St. Nicholas Children’s Day is the idea of Karen and Graham Barton of Love 2 Bounce who said “We just want to do our bit to help this lovely church and our town”.

Already £250 has been pledged by local businesses and it is hoped that more will come forward to sponsor various activities for the children to take part in. Karen and Graham are hoping that schools will get involved by making and selling things on the day with proceeds going to the fund.

Aylsham Wide Sky Festival, 22 – 26 May

This year’s Aylsham Festival features an exciting and eclectic mix of events that should appeal to anyone with an interest in music, theatre, art, history or wildlife. And for one local business owner, Peter Purdy, who is hoping to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition, it’s a chance to display an extraordinary collection of Roman artefacts, in advance of a possible major archaeological dig in the town.

The Festival’s them is Vivat Aylsham (long live Aylsham) and there are several opportunities to find out what the Romans did in Aylsham, with talks, displays and activities focused on the land around Woodgate Nursery, where evidence of a Roman settlement is prompting interest in a professional dig.

“Having spent the last forty years of my life collecting pieces of Roman pottery from the garden and surrounding fields, and wondering where it all came from, it now appears that I am living right in the middle of a Roman settlement,” says Peter Purdy, owner of Woodgate Nursery. “Geophysical surveys, carried out by Britannia Archaeology, indicate the possibility of a trackway, enclosures and kilns here.”

A major coup for festival organiser is The Hansells Conversation, when Mike Dilger, the BBC wildlife presenter, will be chatting to local natural history author Patrick Barkham at Aylsham’s Jubilee Family Centre, on Friday 22 May. They’ll be giving a fascinating insight into North Norfolk’s ecology.

Musical highlights include a quartet from the Britten Sinfonia, playing a programme including Purcell and Mozart in Aylsham Parish church, on May 26, while the main theatrical event of the week is ‘Wanderlust,’ from The Gramophones Theatre Company, in Aylsham Town Hall on 25 May.

Art is always a lively theme at the festival and this year sees the completion of an exciting project, Aylsham Afloat, in the Art in the Garden event. Paper lanterns, created by the local townspeople, will be floated on the medieval fishponds in the grounds of Burgh House, on Saturday 23 May at 8pm. It will make for a dramatic spectacle. Meanwhile the Rotary Art Exhibition in Aylsham Town Hall has a WI Café on the Saturday and a Slow Food Café on Sunday, plus live music.

New Leaf presents ‘Boudica and late Iron Age Norfolk’

Crayford and Abbs Practical Car and Van Rental

Practical Car Hire and Van Rental is returning to its roots with the arrival of Crayford and Abbs joining the franchise at both Bodham and Mundesley.

Practical Car & Van Rental is one of the largest vehicle rental companies in the UK, with over 170 outlets, dominating the mid-range market. Practical Used Car & Van Rental was founded in 1984 by Bolton Agnew (from Oulton, near Aylsham) and Harold Williams, taking an American concept of renting older cars and vans from small community based garages as an add on to their core motor trade-based business. The company changed name in 1990 to Practical Car & Van Rental, allowing them to offer newer vehicles, yet still looking to make the most of their experience and history.

To date Practical has not had a franchisee in North Norfolk for many years. However, that all changes in May, when Crayford and Abbs at Mundesley and Bodham officially join the Practical Company!

This addition to the Crayford and Abbs business all stems from a recent prize trip to South Africa for the MD Kevin Abbs. During the Nissan holiday, Kevin and Elaine spent time during their safari with Graham and Sally Furneaux, whose company had purchased Practical in 2014 and, following discussion regarding the business and the open point in North Norfolk, Kevin felt there was a gap in the North Walsham and Holt areas for Car and Van rental, hence this venture being launched this May!

Practical’s business model is based around excellent customer service at competitive prices, so mixed very well with the ‘ideal’ of Crayford and Abbs. Adding to their existing ties with Nissan they will run a small fleet of Nissan cars, with every model available, including automatics and electric cars. Alongside a selection of vans to include an electric eco one! They have access to all variants through Practical and also offer ‘one way’ transactions.

Crayford and Abbs are also establishing their own car club – they see many customers who for various reasons give up their car ownership, but need the use of one for holidays or infrequent trips not sufficient to justify ownership of either a larger car or indeed total ownership – please call Tom for further information. This venture is operated from both Bodham and Mundesley under the manager Tom Partridge who can be contacted on 01263 588160.

Gresham’s awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund

Gresham’s School has recently been awarded £10,000 through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s (HLF) ‘First World War: then and now’ programme to create a dedicated website as part of its commemorations for the Centenary of the First World War.

This award will enable the School to provide an interactive website devoted to the 110 fallen pupils and three staff, with profiles and supporting documentary evidence of those who lost their lives, plus a database of information on the 500 from the School who served. They will also be able to carry out essential conservation work on important sources, such as the roll of honour and photograph albums, to make sure they are available for future generations.

Academic Deputy Head, Simon Kinder, commented “I am absolutely thrilled about Gresham’s success in its application for an HLF grant. The Archive resources relating to Gresham’s during the First World War are an extraordinary educational and community resource and it is tremendously exciting that

the HLF grant will make this material fully accessible to a national and international audience for generations to come.”

The School Archive is a fantastic resource for historians of all ages to study the conflict, including letters from the front and obituaries published in the Gresham Magazine, as well as photograph albums, a vellum roll of honour, home front accounts, and biographical material donated by family members. Thanks to a project developed with Charterhouse, Year 9 pupils are fortunate in being able to use the collection to enrich their WWI history lessons, and Gresham’s would like to extend this opportunity to pupils in other schools. Liz Larby, School Archivist said, “The new website will provide digitally recorded materials which will give access to schoolchildren, historians, people researching their family histories, and the local community to study the conflict and its impact on the School. Pupils will be involved in researching information for the website and members of the public will be invited to contribute their own family photographs and documents to add to our knowledge.”

Sheringham Lace Makers

Sheringham Lace Makers is a group of lace makers (surprisingly, perhaps!) which meets in St Andrews Church Hall, in Sheringham, every Monday afternoon in term-time, from 1pm to 4pm. We all make - or have made - bobbin lace, but our members also crochet, knit, embroider, and do all sorts of other crafts, and we would be more than happy to welcome new members and their crafts at our meetings. We are also pleased to see any holiday visitors at the meetings.

In conjunction with Holt Library, Norfolk Record Office and the Norfolk

Vellum roll of honour created by Gresham’s Housemaster Wynne Willson in honour of the boys of the junior house who were lost in the War, one of the items which will be conserved thanks to the grant.

Regimental Museum, Gresham’s took part in a family history day on 5 May which was a great opportunity for local people to use online and written records to find out about their WWI military ancestors with help from professionals. There was also an opportunity to visit the School Archives and to see some of our WWI collection.

During the year, we arrange an October ’Make Lace, Make Friends’ Lace Day - with speaker and suppliers - several workshops, a summer event - sometimes a strawberry tea, other times a lunch - and there are refreshments at each meeting.

Sheringham Lace Makers also demonstrate at local fairs and events during the year, and the group has an extensive library of books, and also equipment, which can be borrowed, and as several of the members have taught, or still do teach, there is always someone around to help with any problems.

Our members do come from all over North Norfolk, from Hunstanton, North Walsham, Holt etc, so - if anyone is interested in joining us, please do give our Chairman, Carol Adkinson, a ring on 01263/822075 she will be pleased to give any more information.

SAM LARNER: MAN OF SONG, MAN OF THE SEA

The life and songs of Norfolk folk singer Sam Larner will be celebrated in North Walsham and Cromer this May as part of the North Norfolk Stories Festival.

Sam Larner was born in 1878 in Wintertonon-Sea. Singers in the Winterton fishing community and Sam’s life as a herring fisherman brought him into contact with the rich Norfolk folksong tradition including songs of seafaring and fishing.

Sam was recorded in 1958-60 by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger and his life story was told in their award-winning Radio Ballad 'Singing the Fishing', first broadcast by the BBC in August 1960.

'Sam Larner: Man of Song, Man of the Sea' is presented by local folk music enthusiast Brian Gaudet. It explores Sam Larner the man, the fisherman and folk singer. It examines Larner's contribution to the Norfolk folk tradition, and how this reflects upon the social history of the times.

The talk is accompanied by live music, song and traditional East Anglian step dancing. 'Sam Larner: Man of Song, Man of the Sea' takes place at North Walsham Library on Wednesday 13 May, from 2pm - 4pm, and at Cromer Library on Saturday 16 May, from 2pm - 4pm.

This is a family-friendly event, and all are welcome to attend. Entry is free, but booking is advisable, as numbers are limited.

For the North Walsham event, book with North Walsham Library by email north.walsham.lib@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 01692 402482.

For the Cromer event, book with Cromer Library by email cromer.lib@norfolk.gov.uk or telephone 01263 512850.

This event is part of the new North Norfolk Stories Festival, a programme of 18 free events over three days at museums, parks, libraries and other cultural venues and heritage sites across 10 North Norfolk towns. The Festival will give local people and visitors the chance to explore and enjoy the area’s fascinating history with a series of live performances, hands-on craft events, exhibitions, Merchants’ Place, 16 Church Street, Cromer, from 5pm, 15 minutes free talks and walks from advice with a solicitor. CROSS-BORDER RAID IN NAME OF CULTURE Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is gearing up for another cultural raid over the border to draw old rivals even closer together.

Last summer’s Suffolk safari with his Missionaries of Mirth delivered enough home truths and raised sufficient hearty laughs to warrant an action replay at Lowestoft’s Marina Theatre on Sunday 7 June at 2.15pm.

‘Here We Are Again!’ is a natural fun-packed successor to the highly successful ‘We Come in Peace!’ with both shows born out of a burning desire to knock down old prejudices and build new bridges. “Rumours are rife that Lowestoft could do with at least one more” said Skip after a recent recognisance trip under the cloak of darkness.

Of course, there is added spice this time with Norwich City and Ipswich Town both embroiled in the big Championship promotion race. The hope is both sets of supporters will accept their respective fates in the true sporting spirit.

We can also let you know that the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band is pleased to welcome two guest musicians to its line-up at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, on Sunday 10 May. Richard Church (cornet) and Mick Murphy (reeds) are well known and popular local musicians. Many of you will know them from their time together with the Lumiere Rouge Band and it will, without doubt, be an afternoon of good music and entertainment. ‘That’s Entertainment’ Flower Festival, Buxton Late May Bank Holiday - 23, 24 & 25 May

Some love ballet, some adore rock, for others the craftsmanship of Shakespeare is the pinnacle of an ideal evening. Whatever your idea is of amusement, come and celebrate big entertainment at Buxton Church over the late bank holiday weekend in May.

ice shows, the theatre, barbeques, military tattoos… and so many more.

So if you are intrigued to know how we can portray such activities in the magnificence of floral displays, then visit the festival us to find out.

Fancy a little razzmatazz, elegance or suspense? Well, in May, Buxton’s the place you need to be! 2015 is the year for Buxton’s bi-annual Flower Festival, a festival which has a rich heritage going back to 1963, the year of the first festival. Noted as one of the region’s best - and this year’s will be no exception – the event celebrates ‘That’s Entertainment’. Each delicious floral display will celebrate what we do to entertain ourselves - carnivals, fireworks,

In past years, the festival has been graced by outside broadcasts by BBC Radio Norfolk’s fabulous Maggie Secker; a fine lady of the airwaves and ‘Treasure Quest’ found its convoluted way to the festival to discover a clue amongst the flower displays.

Buxton has justly built a great reputation for its Flower Festival, with each flower display stunningly depicting aspects of the theme in

floral glory, with striking colours and sculptured forms. In previous years, visitors have come from as far afield as France for the three day event. This time in addition to the main occasion, there is a fantastic line-up of activities for all the family including live entertainment on the Saturday evening with The Phoenix Male Voice Choir (tickets available now). Why not come to our café for morning coffee and cake, lunch or afternoon tea? There will be one or two interesting stalls which you can browse at your leisure and for the youngsters and those still young at heart, you could treat yourself to a ride on the Bure Valley Steam Railway when all have had their fill for floral perfection.

Dates are Saturday 23, Sunday 24 and Monday 25 May at Buxton Church. Visit www.buxtonflowerfestival.co.uk for more details.

The Wildlife and Pond area at the Federation of North Walsham Infant, Junior and Nursery Schools was officially re-opened on 22 April by the town’s Deputy Mayor Mrs Brenda West.

Over the last year a lot of hard work and effort from our long standing volunteers Mr and Mrs Mullan (Mrs Mullan is now our School Wildlife Officer) has gone into completely transforming the area to enhance the pupils’ outdoor learning.

We also had a visit from volunteers from the Prince’s Trust in October last year and they worked to help to rebuild pathways and fit a terrace.

The wildlife has already begun to visit the area, with 17 newts and frog spawn spotted in the new pond, alongside the deer, tawny and barn owls and bats who are regular after school visitors! We have also installed a bird hide and pond dipping area.

North Norfolk Removals

We believe that outdoor learning is a very important part of the childrens’ education and the improved facilities, with easier access, will mean that this area will be in use daily.

through the themes of family, adventure and nostalgia.

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre, said “These film festivals are a lovely way for our audiences to really immerse themselves in a topic or filmmaker, and enjoy a rare chance to see these fantastic films on the big screen again.

Anderson’s films are popular for their use of quirky characters, colourful imagery and charmingly choreographed symmetry, which is found in almost every scene. His work is immediately recognisable for its distinct tone, and his stories are full of enticing escapades which make him a favourite choice for audiences across all ages.

“We’ve been having a lot of requests to highlight Wes Anderson in a season, especially as his films are so widely loved by both film buffs and families alike. We’re all really excited about the UEA’s Film students leading these discussions, as every time we’ve had these Film seasons before they’ve been a huge success.”

Film students from the University of East Anglia will introduce each screening, and will also lead discussions on each picture after it finishes. This gives audience members a unique chance to learn more about these films in a fun, informed and relaxed setting.

Summer Sensation in Sheringham It is going to be a sizzling summer of spectacular theatre in Sheringham as the Little Theatre stages a sensational 55th anniversary season.

1 September to Saturday, 5 September, and will be directed by Peter Craze.

“This will be a wonderful season, which will see the return of some of our finest actors, as well as the appearance of some new faces,” Debbie adds.

To mark the occasion not only will the coastal venue be producing five of its best ever plays but it has also invited its celebrity patrons to return to the theatre in directorial roles.

Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson says Sheringham is one of the very few theatres in the country that still stages a repertory season throughout the summer months.

“We are so proud to be keeping the tradition of rep alive and this anniversary season will be more exciting than ever,” she says.

“Not only are we performing the ‘very best of the very best’ plays we have produced since taking the rep in-house, but we have our three fabulous patrons, Desmond Barrit, Nicky Henson and Peter Craze coming back to direct.

“Desmond is, of course known for his roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and on the West End stage, Nicky Henson is also a member of the RSC and is known for his television work, including playing Jack Edwards in EastEnders, and Peter Craze is well-known for his television roles too, especially in Doctor Who.”

The season opens on Tuesday, 21 July with Willy Russell’s famous comedy Educating Rita, directed by Desmond Barrit. Starring Paul

New arrivals at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. No ink is safe…

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has announced the arrival of two new high powered lasers.

“The last few years have been very exciting for us and we have continued to invest in training and education and to add new services to our treatment menu”, says practice manager Trish. “We already have four different IPLs and 10 different lasers in addition to light emitting diodes and diamond microdermabrasion. Now we have added another q switch Nd-Yag and a KTP laser which will help us not only remove dark and red tattoos, but also treat people with deeper pigmentation and sun spots”. This laser produces very high powered and short nanosecond [one billionth of a second] pulses of light that shatter and disperse pigment particles without damaging the skin. This will allow us to treat all skin types, from very fair skin to dark skin concerns.

In many parts of the world greater than 15% of adults have tattoos. It is estimated that 50% of those receiving tattoos will want to have them removed within 10 years of their application. Q switched laser is the ‘goldstandard’ laser for removal of tattoos and Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic will be very pleased to provide this service with five dedicated lasers to remove tattoos of most colours.

One other application of this laser is a very quick ‘lunch-time’ facial that literally takes only a few minutes and a course of these can help rejuvenate the skin very well.

For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

‘Pet’ Tiger Moth to perform fly past at Blickling Proms During the 1940s party at the Last Night of the Blickling Proms on Saturday 8 August, as well as having the opportunity to watch the ‘dancing’ spitfire, the crowd will also see a very special fly past by a Tiger Moth that has been lovingly restored and kept in Norfolk for over 40 years.

The aircraft, was the first aeroplane of many that world-renowned aviator and engineer, Henry Labouchere, ever bought and he’s looking forward to participating at the special event in August.

Henry Labouchere, originally from Sculthorpe, has been passionate about aircraft from a very early age. It was when Henry was in Australia at the age of 20, that he bought his first aeroplane - it was a Tiger Moth that he now fondly refers to as his ‘pet’ plane, and he will be bringing it to Blickling on 8 August. Henry flew the plane in Australia for 7 years before shipping it back to the UK where he has kept it for the last 4 decades. It was built in 1941 in Australia, and is very representative of the aircraft that the Australians learnt to fly in at

the time, before the war. Henry’s Tiger Moth has flown around the world, including New Zealand and Europe on various visits where he arranged flying trips for other enthusiasts. Henry currently maintains around 35 aircraft, for different people, around the world, from France and Germany to Kenya. He flies approximately 180 hours a year, mostly in other people’s planes, and has also appeared in several films, including ‘A Bridge Too Far’, ‘A Man called Intrepid’ and ‘The Aviator’.

Henry also has a connection with Blickling “I used to live in Heydon in the 60s and worked for a company called Westwick Distributors who owned 5 planes which were used for agricultural purposes. I remember assisting top-dressing the land at Blickling Park, so I know it well from the air! I’ve also attended a couple of these classical concerts and thoroughly enjoyed them, so it will be great fun to actually participate too!”

The Tiger Moth is a light aircraft so his appearance will be weather dependent, but if previous years are anything to go by, we can all look forward to seeing this special Tiger Moth in the skies above Blickling on the night.

Plans unveiled for Cromer West Promenade

Draft designs have been unveiled for the revitalisation of Cromer West Promenade which sustained significant damage during the 2013 tidal surge.

Stakeholders gathered to hear the proposals and view visuals being brought forward. The aim is to provide a long-term master plan for the holistic improvement of the west promenade to make it a vibrant and popular destination throughout the year.

Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive at North Norfolk District Council, said “Cromer West Promenade provides an excellent platform to enhance visitors experience and for locals to enjoy. It will also encourage the use of the better bathing beaches to the west of the pier and the beautiful vistas towards the wilder shore and cliff lines towards the west and to strengthen the access and gateway to the town from the large Runton Road car park.”

The proposed design takes into account many of the suggestions put forward from stakeholders including; improved café facility, a ‘fishery activity centre’ with educational and play equipment, pop-up stalls, small auditorium area for entertainment or demonstrations, Cromer fishing/ heritage trail (to be extended into the Town), exhibition space, improved lighting, improved toilets and more beach huts. There are also discussions ongoing with the COAST arts group regarding supporting bids to obtain funding for a major art installation.

After viewing the initial designs stakeholders were generally positive and the feedback given is now being looked at including options for a Fishing heritage centre/area and the use of lighting as an attraction as well as a necessity.

Volunteers were sought to take forward two main streams of the project looking at the detail of the Heritage/Information Trail and the family facilities, play and education elements. These will meet over the next few months to take these elements forward.

The roll out of the design will be phased to take into account current funds and initial service needs. Additional features will be installed as and when funding comes available but it is hoped that the provision of a master plan will make applications for future funding easier and more successful. North Walsham Times 470 May 9th 2015

Henry will be linked by radio to a member of the Revival-Productions team on the ground,

who will give him his cue to arrive to the sound of the well-known RAF March Past at 8.16pm. The final fly past will coincide with the orchestra playing the Indiana Jones theme tune, a part that Henry is looking forward to as he has flown with Harrison Ford. A British Tiger Moth was used in the film and Harrison Ford developed a fondness for the aeroplane as a result.

The Tiger Moth entered service at the RAF Central Flying School in February 1932 and by the Second World War, the RAF had 500 aircraft in service. The last Tiger Moth was built in 1944 and it is estimated that there are still 250 in service today.

There’s plenty to celebrate on the 8 August so come and join the party; the concert will be led by conductor Roderick Dunk with the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra. As well as having FREE parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their flags, picnics and wine, dress for the occasion if they so wish and soak up the atmosphere with friends.

So, don’t miss out! Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) and all event details are available online at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts of up to 20% are also available.

Everything Goes!

When The Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s longest narrow gauge steam railway, first opened in July 1990 it had no steam locomotives of its own and had to rely on those borrowed from The Romney, Hythe &

48

Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years on the Railway now has five steam locomotives purpose built for the line. During the Everything Goes Weekend, 23rd - 25th May 2015, all available locomotives, coaches and rolling stock will be in action. There will be a special intensive timetable in operation throughout the weekend to allow visitors the opportunity to see as many different locomotives as possible hard at work over the nine miles between Aylsham and Wroxham. To keep younger visitors entertained there will a competition on the train journey, with a free prize for every correct entry. The workshop at Aylsham will be open throughout the weekend and staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Andrew Barnes, Director, says “this event will give railway enthusiasts and families alike a chance to see a collection of some of the world’s most powerful 15-inch gauge steam engines on display and in operation”. Train fares allow unlimited travel on the day of issue. Children under 5 travel free.

Mountain Bike Challenge in aid of Macmillan

Forty one year old upholsterer Jason Cockaday from Sheringham and Robert Haylett, a 28 year old British Gas engineer from Badersfield, will be taking part in a mammoth off road event on 14 June in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Having not ridden a bicycle since he was a child, Jason decided that he and his wife Tracy should get mountain bikes to get fit and lose weight. As if that was not enough, he decided that to keep himself interested he would embark on a biking challenge, The Clennell Colossus. Not being able to persuade Tracy that she should join him, he enrolled the youth of the team, that is his niece’s fiancé Robert Haylett.

first thought, so should you see two men riding mountain bikes, red faced and out of breath, around Sheringham Park, please give them a wave. Being Norfolk men they realise that living in a fairly flat county does not bode well for mountain biking, but both are very determined and are finding hills in Norfolk they previously did not know existed.

know, both Rob and Jason have lost relatives to cancer, so they decided that they would raise money for the Macmillan cancer charity.

Macmillan do a great job caring for cancer patients through to The Clennell Colossus in the end of their lives and their Northumbria is a 47 mile off road support to the families involved challenge set in the Cheviot Hills, is beyond measure. They hope to with the route taking in 6500ft raise as much money as possible of ascent, the equivalent of two for this very worthy cancer mountains. The varied route takes charity and anyone wishing to Robert, not realising what he was letting them from Clennell Hall through support them, can do so by himself in for, instantly agreed and they both forests, rolling hills and full on visiting their page ‘Jason and signed up that same evening, leaving Rob the climbs, one of which goes on for Rob’s Colossus Challenge’ on the Photo: JustGiving website or by texting weekend to buy himself a mountain bike. two miles. Walkers wanted for a great cause on Sunday 7 June from 10am to 2pm in the delightful grounds of Felbrigg Hall

The North Norfolk Group of Diabetes UK have once again chosen the historic National Trust grounds of Felbrigg to hold their annual, fund-raising, sponsored walk. Suitable for all ages and set out as a figure of eight (to give a 3.3km or 2.7km walk) this gentle walk runs through woods and meadows.

So if you feel you would like to help raise vitally needed funds to help this diabetes charity continue to fund new research, raise awareness and improve treatments for those with diabetes, please come along.

All are welcome including families and dogs (on leads) and there is wheelchair access on the Victory woodland walk loop. Parking is free and toilets and catering are available close by the start and finish point, which will be situate between the Hall and the nearby lovely walled gardens.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCA Beat Gresham’s in Thrilling Doubles Final

The Knockout Doubles Cup final saw Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Hubert Cheng take on NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and Howard Lupton at the neutral ground of Trunch Village Hall with Derek Philpott in the umpire’s chair. NWSCA took advantage of a nervous start from their opponents winning the opener in three. Bennell and Cheng fought back by taking their third chance to claim the opening set of the second battle against Beane and Lupton – Bennell’s inspired shot selections mixed with Cheng’s strategy of trying to kill everything in sight making life difficult for the NWSCA duo to counter. The match was bizarrely interrupted in the second set by a member of the public who turned up at the hall saying he wanted to cast a vote (over two week’s before the election)! NWSCA continued their battle to be re-elected with Beane and Lupton taking the set to level the second battle for the defending champions. However Cheng was now relaxed into the match and combined well with Bennell as Gresham’s levelled the final in four. Thaxter and Bennell led 5-1 at change of ends in the decider of battle three but a couple of bits of luck mixed in with dogged determination saw Beane and Baldock-Yaxley fight back to level at 7-7 and they went on to claim a potentially significant victory 11-9. A straight sets win for

Baldock-Yaxley and Lupton against Bennell and Cheng saw NWSCA take a 3-1 lead, but in the next battle Thaxter and Cheng both played much better than they did in the opener as their hard hitting saw them beat Beane and BaldockYaxley in straight. Thaxter and Bennell looked good to make the final all square at 3-3 after they led Beane and Lupton by two sets to one, but the tension was evident and NWSCA took their third set-point in the fourth to force a decider. Good defence from the North Walsham pair at 10-4 set up a match-point which was clinched by a winner from Lupton as NWSCA moved one win from the Cup at 4-2 up. There was some inspired play from Cheng as he teamed up with Bennell for a win in three against Baldock-Yaxley and Beane but Baldock-Yaxley and Lupton beat Thaxter and Bennell 14-12, 12-10, 11-9 to close out NWSCA’s 5-3 win. The margins of this high quality final were so close – NWSCA won a total of 273 points compared to Gresham’s 271!

celebrating her fourteenth, Andrew Weston (21) and Tom Wardle (23). The final took place on the hottest day of the year so far at neutral ground again at Trunch Village Hall with Derek Philpott this time sharing officiating duties with Chris Pooley. A high standard was maintained throughout the final from all players, each of them at times producing some amazing shots – there were winning spin serves, spectacular angled shots and good rallies featuring brilliant attack and defence from both teams. It was great to see a final featuring six junior players who all kept their cool throughout which is a credit to all of them and they could teach some of the adults a few things! The handicaps gave Aylsham slender starts throughout – for example four points in each of the opening three battles. Aylsham made better starts in the majority of sets and led by fourteen points after the first four battles. NWSCF never stopped fighting but Aylsham gained confidence as their lead continued to increase and they ran out 326-266 winners. NWSCF will have another chance in the concluding match of the season when the two teams will meet again in the Handicap Singles Cup Final.

Meanwhile the Handicap Doubles Cup Final was the first of two meetings in this year’s showpiece matches between Aylsham C and NWSCF. Brothers Harley (handicap - 26) and Fletcher (29) Dyson joined Becky Wood (29) to represent Aylsham C while NWSCF’s team featured birthday girl Carrie Last (26) who was
