Town responds magnificently to Nepalese earthquake appeal On Thursday 30 April 30, Rotarians from North Walsham collected the remarkable sum of almost £1200 in the town for the Nepal disaster. The proceeds will fund the purchase of two emergency ‘Shelter Boxes’, many of which have already been dispatched to Nepal by Rotary as part of its on-going work in responding immediately to disasters as they occur.

The Boxes contain a tent providing dry living accommodation for up to ten people, split into three ‘rooms’, plus necessary equipment.

Town responds magnificently to Nepalese earthquake appeal Continued from front page...

This is vital as the earthquake has resulted in many Nepalese becoming homeless and losing all their possessions – denying them shelter and the means to provide for everyday living, including the preparation of food. Besides the tent, the Shelter boxes contain warm beds, water purification equipment, cooking aids and utensils, a toolkit and a children’s pack.

President Paul Ryall says “We were absolutely delighted by the generosity of people in our town and wish to thank them for their magnificent response to this call for humanitarian aid. Having an actual ‘shelter ‘ with us, erected in the centre of North Walsham in St Nicholas’ churchyard, was a brilliant visual aid to show precisely what the money collected would provide to the unfortunate people of Nepal.”

The Rotary team was joined by health minister and local MP, Norman Lamb, who engaged enthusiastically in the collection.

Voyager and Age UK Liberal Democrat hold - 71.3% Turnout

Voyager Community Group in North Walsham and Age UK North Norfolk have joined forces to create the new ‘Voyager Keep in Touch’ activity group with an aim of lessening loneliness in our community by encouraging people to get out and about, meet new people, have a natter over a cuppa and to hopefully make new friends; thus leading them to become less socially isolated. Our hope is to give people the opportunity to engage in new activities, enhance their creative skills, and with any luck their confidence; to learn something new and to have a little fun along the way. The launch party is completely FREE to attend and is being held at the Church Room on Vicarage Street in North Walsham on Wednesday the 3rd of June 2015. It starts at St Nicholas at 12 noon and there will be a FREE buffet lunch as well as live entertainment from the local group the Squeegees who will be playing popular music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70s. Voyager Keep in Touch will meet at the St Nicholas Room thereafter every Wednesday from between 2-4pm, and will cost £2 to attend, where the activities will vary from week to week. We have an exercise programme being run by ‘Extend’ planned for the 10th of June followed by an indoor curling afternoon. The group is supported by the National Lottery as part of Age UK North Norfolk’s befriending scheme. Age UK North Norfolk currently runs ‘Keep-In-Touch’ groups in Cromer and Sheringham. The Pop-In group meet every Friday morning at The Cottage on Louden Road between 1012 noon. Whilst the KIT group meet in Sheringham on alternate Mondays from 10.30 onwards at the Community Room on Anchor Close. Lots of different and fun activities are organised by each group throughout the year. So please feel free to come along as you will be made to feel welcome at both clubs. We do hope you can come along to the launch of the Voyager KIT Group and we look forward to seeing you there. For further information please contact us on the following details. Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society Rehearsal Accompanist Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society (SCCS) is seeking a Rehearsal Accompanist to commence duties in September 2015.

The choir rehearses at Sheringham High School each Monday during term time from 7.30pm to 9pm. The Accompanist would be required to attend and accompany all rehearsals on the piano, as required by the Musical Director. Ideally, the Accompanist should be competent to provide cover for the Musical Director in case of need. The Accompanist would be expected to work closely with the Musical Director in the choice of music to be performed and, when appropriate, assist the Musical Director in the preparation of rehearsal schedules etc. The opportunity may arise to perform at concerts and provide accompaniment at occasional ‘Come and Sing’ events. It would be expected that the appointee would play a full part in the running of the choir. SCCS is a registered charity administered by a Committee of Trustees. The constitution states that “…… the Accompanist shall be invited to be an ex-officio Trustee of the Charity for the period of his/her office. If this invitation is not accepted, he/she may attend committee meetings in an advisory capacity but not have the right to vote. …”

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society is a community choir with approximately 100 members. It was founded in 1933 and new members are welcome without audition. Each year the choir performs three concerts in the locality with professional soloists and either orchestra or organ accompaniment and also runs a 'Come and Sing' event in the autumn. The repertoire is varied but has consisted, in the main, of major choral works from the 17th to 21st century. In recent years, concerts have ranged from Bach’s B Minor Mass to

Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and, in 2014, Patrick Hawes’ Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) with English Chamber Orchestra, which was especially commissioned by SCCS. In November 2015 the choir plan to perform Richard Allain’s Vespers with the London Mozart Players. Further information can be found on the web site www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk Fees subject to negotiation, depending on the ability and experience of the successful applicant. As part of the selection process applicants may be invited to attend and participate in a rehearsal.

Please send applications in writing, accompanied by appropriate CV, to: info@sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk or by post to The Chairman, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society,16 St Nicholas Place Sheringham Norfolk NR26 8LF Closing date for applications is 7 June 2015.

Silver success for Paston students

Once again Paston Sixth Form College chemistry students showed they could compete at the highest levels in the 2015 Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad. Eight students entered the competition and all gained certificates with two bronze awards and six silvers placing them easily in the top one thousand chemistry students in the country. The questions are so challenging that scoring any marks at all is considered an achievement worthy of a certificate. This year’s questions ranged over the chemistry of touchscreens involving the unusual element indium, the detection of organic molecules in space, and how “green” jet fuel is made.

Students have to apply their skills and knowledge to unusual problems ,a skill which the RSC is keen to develop amongst our A level students and which will stand them in good stead on the demanding science university courses Paston students aim for.

Bronze awards to: Ted Robinson and Callum Hamilton Emery

Silvers to: Jenna Hatch, Ross Knapman, Daniel Johnson, Keiran Corbett, Jack Southgate, Ashley Hall

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

The evenings are ‘pulling out’ and the warmer weather means our garden is becoming ever more used by families. Mum and Dad can enjoy a relaxing drink while the children play and the family lunch or evening meal will be served to their table in the sun. Older children can also enjoy a game of pool in our pool room although we do ask that they are supervised while they are playing. We want everyone enjoy their time at the White Horse so I always advise everyone to book their table in advance particularly at weekends and at busy times like Bank Holidays. We have an exciting summer ahead of us including our Strictly Norfolk week in July and

Beer Festival in August.

More details of both these events in the coming weeks so keep reading this newspaper to find out more.

Don’t forget our annual charity car wash will be taking place on Saturday 6th June from 9am so make a note in your diary and bring your car along and while the volunteers are cleaning you can enjoy a bacon roll and a cup of tea or coffee.

Full details can be found on our web site www.whitehorseoverstrand.co.uk

Nathan’s Recipe For Red Onion Jam Ingredients

4 large red onions finely sliced, 1 cup red wine vinegar, 6 tbls sugar 1 cinnamon stick, water to cover if required, seasoning

Method

Peel and finely slice onions, add these to the rest of the ingredients in a saucepan. Simmer on a low heat, stirring occasionally. Add more sugar if required. Remove from heat when a jam consistency is achieved. Allow to cool and store in sealed jars in the fridge.

It’s a great jam to have in the house, its versatility makes it an ideal accompaniment to roasts, bacon or cheese sandwiches or simply add a spoonful to your favourite snack. Stored in a Kilner or similarly sealed jar in will last for months.

Aylsham Heritage Centre evening talks

Aylsham Heritage Centre’s popular series of evening talks continues in May featuring two more events with a local flavour. Local author Peter Goodrum is first up, on Wednesday 20th May, with an illustrated presentation about Norwich in the 1950s and 60s. Peter will be drawing on the content of his well-researched books on this subject, promising an entertaining evening. The cost of the talk is just £4 and the evening starts at 7pm.

Cromer Lifeboat Operations Manager, Richard Leeds, will be joined by Derek Hinds on Wednesday 27th May for a talk about the work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). So many people owe their lives to this wonderful charity and proceeds from the evening will go towards ensuring its continued success. Once again, it’s a 7pm start and the cost is £4. To book your tickets phone 07919 962 814 or email aylshamheritage@gmail.com To find out more about Aylsham Heritage Centre, including opening times, go to www.aylshamheritage.com

The Centre, currently running an exhibition about Aylsham in the 100 years since the first World War, is run on a not-for-profit basis by Aylsham Community Partnership. It is also a resource for the local community to

find out more about the heritage of the town.

Local Firemen Saved My Pub!

Says Eunice – The Landlady of the 15th century pub The Crown at Smallburgh. With the chimney ablaze and the medieval thatched roof ready to follow her cry for help was met by not just one but three of our fire stations – Stalham, North Walsham and Norwich all rushed to her aid. Eunice was so grateful and so impressed by their brilliant job that she pledged to raise money for their charity to say a big thank you. Following the fire she was deeply touched by the local community helping her to recover within a day, so to thank everyone it was party time, she says “ all my customers are truly my friends and it seemed the whole village was there to support me”. Eunice is a lady from the Ivory Coast in West Africa and with a vibrant personality. She knows how to have a party and how to create exciting foods so then it was time for another party to raise the money she had promised. Again friends rallied round, one arranged for a whole Lamb to arrive, another created a barbecue complete with rotisserie and Eunice worked her wonders in creating a delicious dish of Lamb marinated with all spices that only she knows of from

8

her home country. ‘The party raised £150 for the fire fighters charity which she was delighted to present to Gary Miller – a senior representative of the local fire fighters. A good selection of real ales and a really warm welcome awaits you from a well managed fire! All the family, your children and your well behaved dogs are welcome in The Crown. Eunice has an attractive Restaurant offering a tempting menu of both English and her exciting African cuisine throughout the week and a superb Traditional Roast on Sunday. Eunice does ask please call her if possible and book on 01692 536314 as the menu is freshly prepared using local ingredients wherever possible and she prepares this herself. A warm welcome awaits you!! Eunice from the Ivory Coast – Landlady of the Smallburgh Crown says:“I would like to give you an insight to some wonderful vibrant menu’s from my country in West Africa, The Ivory Coast. Some you can prepare yourselves, some will need a little practice and others and I will prepare for you myself. Just like yourselves my recipes have been handed down to me by my family and have been taught to

me from a very young age, some very basic products you will know of such as couscous, my secret is in the preparation and in the spices, and my couscous will not be the same as another – that is my secret which I hope to share with you.”

Win a Magnum of Champagne at the Blickling Proms 1940s Party

Photos: courtesy EDP

Win a Magnum of Champagne at the Blickling Proms 1940s Party The sights and sounds of the 1940s will fill the air on Saturday 8 August, when Blickling Hall is playing host to the “Last Night of the Blickling Proms” for the 4th year running. Now firmly established as a favourite in the county calendar, this year’s event is celebrating the special 75th anniversary of Blickling Hall being handed over to the National Trust in 1940, and organisers are planning a host of treats to put concert-goers in the mood.

The Grace Spitfire will introduce the evening with a choreographed routine to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain” which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller, the main theme from “Gone with the Wind”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “We’ll Meet Again”, made famous by Forces’ Sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn when she performed at outdoor concerts for the troops in the Second World War. The second half will include some rousing Proms favourites and organisers are delighted to welcome the Norfolk Belles WI choir to the stage as part of their centenary celebrations, to sing “Jerusalem” which will be a proud moment for all. A is customary at these events, audience participation will be heartily encouraged.

The 1940s was a time when the British unified and people pulled together and organisers are encouraging visitors to bring their own ‘street parties’ - for those who wish to get into character, there will be a magnum of champagne on offer for the best-dressed visitor as well as 4 tickets and a hamper for the 2016 event! If you are not sure what to wear – here are a few 1940s tips!

It’s easier than you think to recreate the classic look, the key is to keep it simple as Tamsyn Morgans, stylist at Sandra Reynolds Agency explains “The 1940’s were an iconic era for fashion, and with the revival of vintage style clothing in most high street stores, it’s really easy to dress top to toe 40’s style. A pretty floral tea dress catches the mood of the decade really well, especially when teamed with a fake fur stole or tweed jacket. Accessorize with a string of pearls and a handbag.

Hair was just as important as the clothes themselves. Youtube is full of tutorials for vintage hairstyles, so arm yourself with some grips and a can of hairspray and create elegant victory rolls for true 40’s glamour. When it comes to make up, pillar box red lipstick is a must, along with groomed brows and winged eyeliner”.

As well as the iconic Spitfire that was used by the Royal Air Force and other allied forces during the Second World War, visitors will also be spoilt with a fly-past by a 1940s Tiger Moth, the primary training aircraft for the RAF and others at that time, remaining in service with them until the early 1950s.

“It’s going to be a special year for Blickling”, says Jo Bosch, Marketing & Visitor Manager at the National Trust Blickling Estate. “We have some fresh and exciting things up our sleeves and the Proms is one of the year’s signature events; we’re so pleased that the 2015 concert theme will help us to tell the story.”

There is plenty to celebrate so come and join the party. The concert will be led by conductor Roderick Dunk with music by Sinfonia Viva. As well as having FREE parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their flags, bunting, picnics and wine, dress for the occasion if they so wish and soak up the atmosphere in the outstanding Blickling Hall setting.

So, don’t miss out! Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) and all event details are available online at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts of up to 20% are also available.

ST GEORGE’S ‘ DAY’ RUN 2015

North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club produced a tremendous turnout form this year’s ‘National Drive it Day’ event for classic vehicles.

Sunday 26 April saw some 330 classics roll into the Station Road car park in Sheringham where crews picked up their tulip style route instructions.

Two scenic routes of approximately 50 miles each were split 50/50 between entrants with the final destination being the Royal Estate, Sandringham where the vehicles parked up in the large grass area in front of the church of St Mary of Magdalene.

A somewhat forbidding forecast in the run

up to Sunday luckily came to nothing, and the day turned out to be basically dry with some good sunny spells during the afternoon which made for a very convivial atmosphere among the entrants.

Proceeds from the run were collected on behalf of the East Anglian Air Ambulance with a record of just over £5,000 being taken. Sponsorship for the route maps and photographs was kindly provided by Anglia Car Auction at Kings Lynn (next Classic Car auction date is Saturday 13 June) and a huge debt of gratitude must go to the Sandringham Estate for providing such a magnificent setting.

Local Masons support School’s ‘Pom Pom’ Appeal

Two Freemasons from the North Walsham ‘Lodge of Unanimity No 102’ recently attended a Friday afternoon celebration Assembly at North Walsham Infant and Junior School to present a Cheque for £250. Mike Ling, who is the current Worshipful Master of the Lodge, suggested the raffle proceeds from their April meeting should be donated to the School after hearing about the appeal which was set up following Vandalism to the School last Oct. The school was very grateful for the donation to boost their appeal, which has been very well supported by the local community and will enable the school to replace useful resources that had been lost. If you are interested in learning more about Freemasonry and qualification for membership, then look out for the Information trailer, manned by local Masons, which will be attending several events in Norfolk over the coming months such as the Worstead festival, Norfolk show and Aylsham show. Pictured making the presentation to pupils who are on the school council, are Mike Ling and Ian Walker who is the Charity Steward of the lodge.

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST

Will be holding open days at Ebridge Mill Pond, Happisburgh Road, North Walsham, NR28 9NH on Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June 2015 between 10 am and 5 pm each day.

Do come along and meet the people who are working hard to re-open Norfolk’s only locked canal which is part of our industrial heritage. See where the wherries used to carry coal, cabbages, wheat, flour etc. between Antingham, North Walsham, Worstead, Honing and Dilham through to the sea port of Great Yarmouth. History – photographs – Memories! Raffle – tombola – refreshments (lovely cakes!). Various information stalls – boats....and a lovely day out beside and possibly on the canal! Are you a member of the Trust? Over 2,500 people have signed our petition to continue to restore the canal. Have you signed yet?

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

I am happy to advise that Verity, the lovely black cat mentioned last time has also now found a loving new home. Next month we will be celebrating the 15th anniversary of the meeting held in the Community Centre to find willing cat loving volunteers to set up a branch of Cats to help cats in North Walsham and District area. So much has happened in the intervening years and as well as finding loving new homes for over 3000 cats and kittens, we have had fantastic support for the work that we do from so many people and companies and we are very grateful for all their help. Our volunteers work so very hard to ensure we can continue to help needy cats in the area and long may this continue. We have over the years noticed that you will often have lots of cats of a particular age or colour coming into care over a short period of time and then go for a

long time before seeing anything similar. We know that we will always have lots of lovely black cats coming into care of varying ages but often find that nearly every other cat will be of one particular colour. Last year, for example, we had a larger than usual number of white cats whereas this year there have been none. Again, last year we only had 3 older cats come into care compared to 10 already this year, (three of which have already been re-homed). Cats like Simba (10 years), a lovely ginger boy and Benji (9) and pale ginger and white lad who arrived because their owners have died, or Sweep (12) a very friendly black boy who was living as a stray after his owner went

Rabbits

into a home. Another of our older cats is Mange Tout(10), another ginger lad who needs to lose a little more weight before we can put him up for adoption. As cats to live much longer nowadays, giving a home to an older cat is definitely worth considering especially for us older cat lovers looking to give one a new home.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Free Puppy Socialisation with Animal Magic Dog Club

Rabbits are now Britain’s 3rd most popular pet.

They are an intelligent species that need company and plenty of mental stimulation. Preventative healthcare for rabbits is just as important as it is for Dogs and Cats. A combined vaccination is available to protect against the 2 most common diseases, Myxomatosis and RHD both of which can be fatal. Owners need to be aware of other diseases, like dental malocclusion and potential problems such as Fly Strike, especially with the warmer weather approaching. Rabbits need checking at least twice a day to prevent this extremely distressing and often fatal disease. It occurs when rabbits back ends become soiled with faeces, this attracts the flies which then lay their eggs on the fur and skin. The maggots then hatch and start eating the skin and surrounding tissue, releasing toxins which make the rabbit unwell. If rabbits are left unchecked in the warm weather this can prove fatal as so much skin and tissue can be lost. Some interesting rabbit facts:

Rabbits thump their hind legs when the feel threatened or can sense danger approaching Rabbits do have a voice – they communicate by humming to indicate affection Rabbits can jump 1m high and up to 3m long Rabbits teeth are open rooted – this means they never stop growing and they rely on chewing action to wear them down Rabbits cannot vomit Rabbits jump and twist when they are happy this is called ‘binkying’ Rabbits can see behind them without turning their heads however they cannot see straight in front of their nose!

Our nurses offer FREE healthcare checks for your pet rabbit, providing advice about feeding the correct diet, housing and environment. For further information about rabbit husbandry why not book an appointment at our Sheringham or Cromer surgery.

The minute you pick up your new puppy the clock is ticking as you only have until they are approximately sixteen weeks old to expose them to new experiences before the fear and anxiety neural pathways become fully formed in their brains. Bronwen Bell Club Manager of Animal Magic Dog Club said “We cannot stress enough the importance of early socialisation, for example; show an eight week old puppy a hoover, motorbike or a donkey and it will take encounters with these in its stride for the rest of its life. But wait until its six months old and you could have a dog that is fearful all of its life. Statistics show that the number of people requiring treatment following a dog bite are increasing year on year, often caused by under-socialisation of the dog at an early age. At Animal Magic Dog Club, we take puppy socialisation seriously and we work closely with Toll Barn and Miramar Vets to provide FREE puppy socialisation workshops for puppies not yet fully vaccinated. We also offer FREE puppy events such as walks and playgroups for vaccinated puppies that have attended the workshops. A healthy, well socialised puppy is a happy puppy and a happy puppy equals a happy owner. Dogs bring such joy into our lives that they deserve the very best start to their life with you so with this in mind we’ve created a number of fun activities for puppies and their owners. If you’d like to join our next FREE puppy fun day which will include games, walk and tea party on Wednesday 10th June @ 10.00am then please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or e mail secretary.animalmagic@btconnect.com. North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

Thursday 2nd April at 2pm we opened the doors again to the community centre for another club meeting. We were a little bit late in starting owing to a delay in the transport. Some of our members are picked up by a coach which is a good thing because some of our members come all the way from Sheringham & it would be difficult for them to get to the club on their own so the club pays for the transport so the members can arrive safely. Owing to a traffic jam along the way the meeting started a

quarter of an hour later than normal and we had a great afternoon. We were entertained by The Squeegee's a male singing duo who really put their heart into what they sing and the humour that comes with it. They sang a medley of songs from the sixties, country & western & of course the local Norfolk song ‘Have you got a Light Boy!’ The raffle & second hand stall fund raising made £43 in total.

Our Thursday meeting on the 7th May was held in The Scarborough Hill Hotel because it

was our annual lunch. The weather held out for us and even the hotel’s chickens welcomed us. We had a two-course roast lunch followed by coffee or tea. The transport was also provided by the club and it arrived on time.

We are still looking for new members to join our club, we are a great club very friendly and we have a great committee that work hard to make sure that every meeting goes to plan. Our next meeting is on Thursday 4th June at the community centre 2pm so if you are partially sighted or have any eye problems come and join us.

Zach shoots winning photo for Schools’ Photography Competition Congratulations to Gresham’s Prep pupil, Zach Humphrey, from Sheringham for winning first prize in the Fine & Country Schools’ Photography Competition.

There were two categories in the competition, a junior section, which was open to 8 to 11 year olds and a senior category aimed at children aged twelve and over. Evey Jermy, a Year 8 pupil at Gresham’s Prep also had her entry shortlisted for the finals. Both entries were shortlisted at the East Anglian Game and Country Fair on 25 and 26 April, where the winners were announced.

Photograph – Zach at the East Anglian Games and Country Fair As the winner of the junior section, Zach was awarded a gift voucher to use at Go Ape, a forest adventure park as well as a family photographic session with Norfolk photographer Andy Davison.

Emma Wright, a music student at the University of York and former Head Chorister at Gresham’s School, has been selected for a place in the worldleading youth arts organisation the National Youth Theatre (NYT). The NYT is the leading platform for showcasing young acting talent which has nurtured such British actors as Ben Kingsley, Orlando Bloom and Dame Helen Mirren.

Emma said of her achievement “The audition for the NYT was split in to three parts, movement and physical thePhotograph – Emma Wright in atre, devising and improvisation, and an a production of Miss Saigon at individual monologue. About 50 people Gresham’s School -Emma is auditioned the same day. It was quite in- from Field Dalling in Norfolk tense but a lot of fun and it was great to meet so many like-minded people. I cannot begin to explain how grateful I am to have been given this opportunity - it’s such an honour.” Emma is also a member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. After successfully gaining a place in the Training Choir when she was 16, a year later she was promoted to the Main Choir. Whilst at Gresham’s, Emma took the lead role of Kim in the school production of Miss Saigon. The following year she gained a Level 4 Diploma in Musical Theatre Performance, played Julie in the school's production of Carousel and Eponine in Sheringham Little Theatre's production of Les Miserables, all whilst studying for her A Levels in English Literature, Music and Theatre Studies. Next month, she will be playing the role of Natalie in Next to Normal as part of the University Musical Society's Summer Showcase, and Third Boy in the Opera Society's production of The Magic Flute in The Grand Opera House, York.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Emma hopes to move to London and continue her training in musical theatre or acting.

Ciao Tutti!

Benji’s Stomach

This month I thought I would write about a rather special patient we have recently treated.

I first met Benji, an 8 year old Standard Poodle, when I was working for the Norwich Night Vet service and he came to us with a life threatening condition known commonly as bloat or a twisted stomach.

In this condition the stomach swells to over four times its normal size and rotates, restricting blood flow to other vital organs. To complicate things further Benji also had a splenic torsion and, as we took him to surgery, I had to tell his owner that there was only a 50-50 chance of survival.

We de-rotated his stomach, stitched it back into the correct position and removed his spleen. After a few days of round the clock care (the Norwich Night Vet service is the only one in the region where a vet is present with the patients 24 hours a day, every day of the year) Benji went home and had been fit and well until I met him a year later, but this time at Westover Vets. On this occassion he had trumped his previous illness by developing a seldom seen, but usually fatal mesenteric torsion, where his intestine had twisted around itself and started to become gangrenous.

North Walsham Times 471 May 23rd 2015

24 Years Trade Experience FREE QUOTATIONS

This time I really didn't think he would pull through, but the surgery was a success and after another couple of days of intensive care he was back home with his loving owner. His story highlights how special our pets are, both to us as owners and as remarkable individuals in their own right. He is one of many patients I will never forget, but, as enjoyable as it is treating animals, I would like to think he has been through enough (and put his owner through enough) that I won't see him again at the vets for a little while!

GREAT DAY OF RUGBY SEVENS AT NORTH WALSHAM Competitions for men’s and ladies’ teams ‘Boat race’ record attempt planned

The annual North Walsham Rugby Sevens tournament is kicking off on Sunday, May 24th at North Walsham RFC’s Norwich Road, Scottow ground with the organisers planning to build on the success of last year’s tournament, which attracted a full compliment of 16 men’s teams and the club’s first ever ladies tournament. Again, 16 men’s teams will be competing, with the ladies’ competition comprising six teams. Sevens and club teams from throughout the eastern counties, east Midlands and London have signed up and will be competing for the Jill Hambling Cup for the men’s competition and the George Campbell Shield for the ladies’ competition. The total prize pot this year is £2000.

According to one of the event organisers, Dan Goodrich, the form book shows that it could be a hard fought battle for honours. “With last year’s winners unavailable this year, there will be a different name on the cup in 2015. But runners up, the Sydney Knights, and a number of last year’s contenders back again, and several new teams, it will be very open indeed. It’s great to see so many teams coming to North Walsham for the first time.” The event this year is being sponsored by timber and builders merchants, Jewson, who have branches throughout Norfolk, including in North Walsham and Wroxham. Jack Morrell of Jewson, said: “If last year is anything to go by, this will be another brilliant day of rugby sevens, which we are delighted to support.

North Walsham Times 471 May 23rd 2015

It’s great to see teams coming to Scottow from so far away, as well as a number of Norfolk clubs being represented, like Wymondham, Lakenham Hewitt, Norwich, North Walsham, Norwich Medics and Stowmarket.”

The event is a great family day out and is about more than nonstop rugby action all day, with a hog roast, a beer festival featuring 20 different beers all from Norfolk breweries, a Pimms tent, volley ball, a display of touch rugby, live music and more. The tournament starts at 11am and runs until around 6pm. Each seven-a-side game lasts seven minutes each way, with the final 10 minutes each way. Games are played concurrently on three pitches, providing spectators with plenty see. Dan Goodrich adds: “We are delighted that so many teams have signed up. “Rugby sevens is all about fun and it will be a fabulous day both for players and spectators. We are also planning a world record attempt at the longest ‘boat race’ at the end of the day and very much hope that everyone will stay right up to the end to find out about it, watch – or even join in!” North Walsham RFC is at Norwich Road, Scottow NR10 5BU. Entry to the tournament is £3 per person and car parking is free.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB North Walsham Probus Club elected Graham de Feyter as their President for 2015/16 at their April meeting.

Following his election Graham recounted his family history explaining how, although being of partly Dutch parentage, he came to be farming in Norfolk. His father was born in Holland in 1896, but the family moved to a farm near the Belgian border during the early part of the 20th century. At this time, the Dutch Sugar Beet company was beginning to cultivate and process sugar beet.

At this stage, Graham’s great uncle was sent to England to persuade local farmers to adopt the

22

cultivation of sugar beet, and possibly acquire farms. His father came to England after the First World War, following a spell in the Dutch cavalry. Although intended as a holiday visit, he liked England, and started farming here in 1929, marrying Graham’s mother, the daughter of a Paston builder in 1930.

Graham’s father acquired British nationality, unlike an uncle, who was interned at the beginning of the Second World War, later being released, on the condition he did not reside within twenty miles of the coast.

Initially Graham’s father rented a farm from his

brother in law, but later bought it shortly after the war. Graham began working on the farm immediately after leaving school, and was able to describe the changes in the industry over the last half of the 20th century. Formally a labour intensive occupation it is presently capital intensive, in many cases relying upon hiring equipment, instead of manual or horse drawn appliances. However, one feature remains the same, the fickle weather or the risk of fire to crops, which can lead to economic disaster. The next meeting is on Wednesday 27 May, new members are welcome. The origin of the common name forget-me-not is not so clear. Some link it to the tragic German tale of a chivalrous knight, clad in heavy armour, slipping into the torrents of a violent stream while picking a few of the blooms growing along the water’s edge. As he is carried away he casts a handful of flowers onto the bank, crying ‘forget me not’ to his helpless lady.

Coleridge popularised the name in his poem ‘The Keepsake’ in the early nineteenth century: Nor can I find, amid my lonely walk By rivulet, or spring or wet roadside That blue and bright-eyed flowerlet of the brook, Hope’s gentle gem, the sweet Forget-me-not’

These references probably describe the water forget-me-not, one of fifty species of Myosotis. All are annual or perennial herbs with alternate, hairy leaves and small salver-shaped flowers that are predominately blue, pink or white. The perennials are rather short-lived, and for garden use are usually grown as biennials. The usual garden choice is M. Sylvatica in its many varieties and it is extremely easy to grow from seed. Forget-me-nots are strongly associated with the English cottage garden style, to which their propensity to self-sow lends itself perfectly. They cover the bare ground in spring, but also form a unifying theme throughout the garden. The blue flowers hugging the ground make an excellent foil for other plants, like the acid-lime-green euphorbias and the rich reds and oranges of tulips such as ‘Red Georgette’ and ‘Ballerina’. Not difficult to grow, forget-me-nots will thrive in any good garden soil as long as there is plenty of moisture. Powdery mildew can be a problem in dry conditions, but in general not until the end of the flowering season.

Mothers’ Union

At our May meeting we were pleased to welcome Christine Greenfield who came to talk to us about Fairtrade and Traidcraft. She began by explaining the basic difference between these two organizations. Farmers and producers, who have a viable product but need help with marketing and getting a fair price are largely supported by Fairtrade. On the other hand small producers and farmers who are somewhat marginalized are helped to grow a better product and then find a market for it so getting them onto the first step of the ladder. Christine bought along a selection of Fairtrade and Traidcraft items for sale and after her talk members were able to shop knowing that they were also helping to support a very worthwhile organization. Our next meeting is on Tuesday the 9th June at 2.30 pm in St Nicholas Room, when our speaker will be a representative of the Benjamin Foundation. Visitors and new members are always welcome, for further information contact Ann on 01692 402705

These plants are extremely sensitive to nutrient deficiencies, and can therefore be useful indicators of problem areas. Poor soil conditions will cause stunted growth and discolouration of the leaves. Under stress the flowers often change colour from blue to pink, and this very often happens when plants have been moved in full flower.

At the end of their flowering season plants can be pulled out as soon as they become tatty or mildewed. Do not worry about the seed being ripe, forget-menots have such a long flowering season that by the time they have lost their looks enough seed will have set for next year’s plants. Easy and rewarding forget-menots deserve to be remembered and grown in every garden.

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS AYLSHAM C BEAT NWSCF AGAIN TO WIN HANDICAP CUP DOUBLE

Following a 5-3 win for Gresham’s School A against Outlaws in the Knockout Singles Cup final (the only one of the four finals not to feature a home team), the concluding final was the Handicap Singles between Aylsham C and NWSCF. The match was a repeat of the Handicap Doubles final which saw Aylsham defeat North Walsham although both teams fielded slightly different line-ups this time as Aylsham C’s Owain Atthill (26), Will Sutton (23) and Fletcher Dyson (27) took on NWSCF’s Andrew Weston (21), Carrie Last (26) and Jack Bye (21). Once again umpiring duties were shared by Chris Pooley and Derek Philpott with the match taking place at a packed Trunch Village Hall and it was nice to see juniors from both clubs who were not playing in the final attend to support their team-mates.

from Sutton saved five match-points and limited NWSCF’s gain. The third battle saw Dyson (+6) take on Bye and at times in this encounter and throughout the rest of the final there was some effortless brilliance in the shotmaking of Dyson including one amazing lightning fast reaction smash in the first against Bye. Dyson won the set 21-5 – just as in the doubles final, NWSCF were chasing from the off and the margin of this set meant that they would have to work very hard in order to try and make up the deficit. Bye won six consecutive points from 7-16 in the second before Dyson took the next four and there was some good damage limitation from Bye as in the second consecutive battle, six match-points were needed before Dyson won 21-18. A third of the way through and Aylsham C led 118-87 – a difference of 31 points.

The opener saw Atthill (+5) take on Weston with the player from Aylsham the more consistent as he won the first 21-11. There was good defence and attack from both players at times in the second, which Atthill won by the same score to open up an early 20 point lead for Aylsham. Next Last (+3) made a bright start against Sutton with some good attacking play, but as Sutton dug in she made a string of unforced errors which undid most of her hard work from earlier as she won the set 21-18. Last was more focused in the second as she took a 20-11 lead, but some terrific defence

In the fourth battle Weston produced some fine counter-hitting, but good use of angles from Sutton (+2) saw him increase Aylsham’s lead by another ten points. This then increased even further as Atthill (+5) was solid on both wings as he took the first from Bye 21-9. The second was closer – Atthill saved two set-points at 1820, before Bye ended with a fine flourish producing a backhand winner on the 20-20 point. However NWSCF’s backs were still against the wall with Aylsham C leading by 52 points.

Next Last was over-eager in her desire to attack against Dyson (+1) and did not keep the ball on the table enough – there was some more magic from Aylsham’s young star as he took the first 21-8. There was some ferocious attack from both players at times in the second but Last was troubled by Dyson’s good variation of shot selection from topspins to chops as he won the second 21-13. With Aylsham on the brink of ensuring victory, the clash between Sutton (+2) and Bye was an exciting and entertaining game of open table tennis – Sutton led 10-1 in the second as his 21-17, 21-13 victory gave Aylsham an 85 point lead that could not be caught.

The remaining battles were played out as Dyson (+6) won both sets against Weston before Atthill (+0) took the first from Last 21-18. Last had two set-points in the second but Atthill took the set 21-20. Overall Aylsham C were the more consistent team and just as in the earlier doubles final, a mature performance saw them win the cup – the final score being 369-258.
