Canaries back in Premier League

Norwich City bagged two goals early in the first half to earn an instant return to the Premier League with victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley by 2-0.

Both sides crashed the ball against the woodwork in the first few minutes. First Bradley Johnson and then 'Boro's Jelle Vossen

Worth an estimated £120m to the victors, Cameron Jerome took advantage of a Daniel Ayala error to put the Canaries ahead, slotting the ball past 'Boro keeper Konstantopoulos at the near post after just 12 minutes.

Three minutes later Nathan Redmond fired in after good teamwork in the build up.

Norwich were excellent defensively for the rest of the match, limiting Middlesbrough to half chances and were well worth the immediate return to the top flight.

Cromer Nalu Bead Competition!

Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer, together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ company Nalu Beads, ran a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer!

Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe, and worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that haracterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place.

Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘We were overwhelmed by the response to this competition and by the standard of the entries’.

‘We wanted to create an amazing bead that was unique to Cromer, and seeing how people had

fitting nicely into the rest of the UK bead range’

thought about what Cromer meant to them and then transferring that visually, was just amazing’.

‘We all have different takes on things, and to some, the representation of Cromer was the cliffs, others the sea, the pier, and obviously crabs came into it a lot as well’.

‘The choice of colours used across the entries was varied too, as they took in the mood of the area, blues, greys, yellows, browns and oranges, all having relevance’.

Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis was really impressed with the top five selected entries. ‘We loved all five designs as they all represented Cromer really well, but the winning design was also the best for working in glass, as well as

So, the overall winner was 11 year old Juliet Price Thomas of Cromer whose design incorporated, the sea, the sun, surfing and the famous Cromer crabs. Not only will Juliet’s bead be produced in time for the summer season but she also receives the first prize of £100 worth of Nalu Beads.

Rhiannon added ‘Although Juliet’s bead was the overall winner we thought the other four were amazing too so have provided a prize for each of them also’.

Phil and Kay of Wet Dog would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition for supporting it with such passion. Cromer truly is an inspirational place.

Age Concern North Norfolk - Trustees Wanted Have you ever thought about becoming a trustee to give something back to the community and area you live?

It doesn’t have to be as time consuming as you might first think but if you can spare at least half a day a month you could make a real difference to a substantial amount of local people. If this sounds like something you are interested in then Age Concern in North Norfolk would love to hear from you. Becoming a trustee should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. You can become involved in your community and help to change it in a positive way. Trustees can come from all walks of life - maybe you have just moved to the area or are recently retired, then this might be an opportunity for you to meet new people, learn new skills or use your invaluable existing skills in a cause or project that you believe in.

Our charity’s mission is ‘to promote the well-being of all older people and help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience’, If this is something that is equally important to yourself or maybe your life has been touched by the work of our organisation then please consider becoming a trustee. Alternatively, you may want to build on your CV with a fresh challenge, be looking to experience new, constructive, insights into the charity sector before a change of career or have expertise that may be of a benefit to our organisation. Most of all you will be part of a team as a trustee and will have the opportunity to add your unique skills and experience while learning from others too in an open, productive environment; either way this could be the ideal position for you. Age Concern in North Norfolk provides a day centre and lunch club, a befriending service, a pop-in coffee morning and a variety of activities.

The four-day per week day centre offers personal care, laundry services, lunches and

entertainment. The befriending service, funded by the Big Lottery, matches volunteers with isolated people who they visit at home thereby helping to relieve isolation and loneliness in our community. We have clubs across Cromer, Sheringham, and soon to be North Walsham, which provide companionship and activities for older people and an opportunity to get out and about. We often arrange outings and events as well as promoting regular intergenerational activities, fundraising and partner charity work. You can find information about the role of charity trustees at www.gov.uk/government/ organisations/charity-commission. Whilst you need to have an interest in older people, applications are welcome from people with a wide variety of backgrounds. Most importantly we want you to make a difference to not only our charity but to the whole of North Norfolk by promoting our mission and believing in a better life for everyone in later life, your skills and experience are important and priceless to us so please get in touch if you would like to become a trustee. You are more than welcome to come along to our AGM on 18 June at 1pm at our daycentre in Sheringham, to get a better feel for our charity and what we are striving to achieve.

For more information, or to apply, please contact Margaret Drury, Trustee and Minutes Secretary, via our office on 01263 823126 or by email ageuknn.admin@xlninternet.co.uk

Get ready for summer - reduce excessive underarm sweating

Summer is upon us and, unfortunately, higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. It can be localised or affect the whole body. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. Severe underarm sweating is usually due to overactive sweat glands. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling. Sometimes excessive sweating is due to other medical causes and here treatment is directed towards the underlying cause. In this case sweating is usually generalised.

Generalised hyperhidrosis (affecting the whole body) can be caused by

HUXTABLE MOWERS TEL: (01692) 406265

some medications, illnesses including chronic infections, some cancers and by some hormonal conditions including the menopause, diabetes and an overactive thyroid gland. Sometimes no cause can be found. Anxiety, depression and stress can trigger or worsen hyperhidrosis.

How do I know if there is underlying problem?

Usually symptoms of the underlying cause are present so if you are generally healthy chances are that you have primary hyperhidrosis. Some more pointers towards this are- Onset in young age, involvement on both sides and cessation of sweating during sleep. Diagnosis is usually made on clinical picture but sometimes further testing is necessary.

What are the treatment options?

When there is an underlying cause which can be treated, the hyperhidrosis can be cured. Surgical treatment can cure some people. Otherwise the aim is to control the condition. You can take some general measures such as daily showering, wearing loose cloths made of natural fibre and frequent change of clothing etc. Usual first line is anti-perspirants which you can buy over the counter. There are some stronger antiperspirants such as aluminium chloride hexahydrate, driclor or anhydrol Forte. Follow precautions as suggested by manufacturers. If sweating affects hands or feet there are treatment options such as medications and iontophoresis.

If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and anti-perspirants have not worked, you may be a candidate for Botulinum toxin type A [ botox ] treatment. It is a simple and highly effective treatment option which can result in dryness for up to one year or more. Lack of awareness can be a problem as we often see patients who have suffered for years with this crippling condition. They are delighted by the results from such a simple, quick and painless procedure.

What other areas can you treat?

As long as it is not a generalised problem we treat excessive sweating from face, hands and feet as well.

What about a surgical solution for longer lasting results?

We offer a laser procedure under local anaesthesia to destroy the sweat glands for those wishing a longer lasting solution to this problem.

Lemon Potted Crab

As I write this it’s a beautiful early summer’s day. The cricket season is well underway and we are delighted to be sponsoring Cromer First XI this season, including their overseas players Damien and his wife Michaela who are also working at the Grove for the next few months.

We have had a very busy start to the season and as usual we have been busy recruiting staff members to cope with the summer demand. We have also been

joined by a parrot, who is yet to be seen but has been making himself heard by wolf-whistling at the Orchard Room guests as they make their way down for breakfast. The parrot has set up home in a large bay tree in the Secret Garden and will provide accompaniment to our wonderful al fresco dining, available this summer for larger parties up to twelve people. Do call us on 01263512412 to book!

Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing you soon! Ingredients • 400g crabmeat • large pinch cayenne pepper • zest and juice of ½ lemon • 300g butter • fresh parsley leaves, to decorate

The parrot hasn’t developed a taste for crab yet, which is fortunate because as usual this superb Cromer delicacy is very, very popular. And a slightly more unusual way to try it is as potted crab as this recipe shows.

Protecting North Norfolk’s Beach Huts

Beach huts, that most quintessentially British feature of our coastline, are making headlines these days. From appearing in TV adverts to shocking stories about six-figure price tags, they’re rarely out of the media. In recent years, beach huts in Norfolk have also made the headlines, but not always for the right reasons. The terrible storms and tidal surges of December 2013 wreaked havoc that’s all too fresh in the minds of many, with dozens of beach huts along the coast being reduced to matchwood. Since the storms, North Norfolk District Council has required hut owners to have at least £500 of insurance cover to pay for the removal of debris and site clearance, should such destructive weather

strike again. Previously, the cost burden fell upon council tax payers, with some feeling this unfairly subsidised beach hut owners.

It’s good to know that the beach ‘hutters’ of Norfolk can rest easy thanks to Love Your Hut. As a leading provider of beach hut insurance, they’ve made it their mission to help protect as many huts - and hutters - as possible. Their market-leading policy provides site clearance cover as standard. Love Your Huts’ senior underwriter and resident beach hut guru, Matthew Briggs, said “As a true hut enthusiast, I’m delighted that we’re supporting hutters in Norfolk. The hut community on this coast has been through a lot in recent times, and I’m proud of the fact we’re more than just a company that sells insurance. In fact, we’re rather obsessed with beach huts - after all, they’re a great British institution!”

Volunteering at Holt Hall

“As volunteers we have the opportunity to work in a beautiful walled garden, Victorian greenhouse and poly tunnel. We see the whole satisfying process from sowing, to planting, to cropping – of course we have to deal with a few weeds on the way!

FREE VALUATION

Volunteering at Holt Hall isn’t all about work either – we enjoy each others company, have lots of laughs and also meet visitors and chat about the garden and Hall on Open Days” – written by some of the Holt Hall volunteers who work in the garden on Mondays.

Chris Blake, Grounds Manager (left), with some of Holt Hall’s volunteers at the Open Day in April

If you are interested in volunteering at Holt Hall, why not pop along to our Open Day on 21 June and meet some of the other volunteers who will be running the car park, working hard in the café or working in the garden. Our Open Days help to raise money for a Bursary Fund, which supports Norfolk children on residential visits to Holt Hall.

For more information on Holt Hall Environmental & Outdoor Learning Centre please visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/holthall or call the office on 01263 713117.

Roll up and sign up for the big parade

We’ll help you stand out so more buyers come in Our expert team of property consultants will use comprehensive marketing to showcase your house to the widest audience possible. So you’ll never miss out on a potential buyer.

There is an open invitation for young and old alike to take part in North Walsham’s biggest parade for several years.

The fun, spectacle and attraction of a big festival parade returns to the town on Sunday 28 June at the end of what aims to be North Walsham’s biggest and best festival week and organiser Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk, is hoping for an enthusiastic response to the return of what has been a firm favourite in the town in past years.

He said “We’re delighted to be bringing back the parade after so many years, in true festival style. We’re also lucky enough to have the Norwich Community Samba Band who will be leading the way. We want as many people as possible to be part of it, whether you’re a group, club, sports team, business, pub, school, group of friends or family. It’s a great way to promote your group – or a fun way to be involved in the town’s biggest event of the year!”

The parade will start off at 11.15am and will process through the town centre on its way to the Memorial Park to signal the start of a Fun Day from noon.

The parade is open to anyone from North Walsham and district such as children’s uniformed organisations (Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts etc), charities, social clubs and groups, sporting organisations, commercial businesses and individuals. It is a foot parade, so get your thinking caps on for a colourful, visual and noisy procession!

Arts North Norfolk is also holding a series of parade workshops, to help generate ideas, make some costumes and discuss the logistics of it too. Deadline for entries is the end of May and anyone interested in taking part should contact Arts North Norfolk on 01692 218060, at the shop/booking office at No. 1, Market Place (open Wednesday to Saturday), or at info@artsnorthnorfolk.org North Walsham Times 472 June 6th 2015

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM HELP

North Walsham in Bloom is now in desperate need of additional helpers. We find ourselves in the position of having lost six of our workers this year. Three people have moved away from the town and three have had to leave for health reasons, either of their own or close family. This drastic reduction in our numbers is starting to put a huge strain on the remaining people. Nearly all of us have other commitments, either to family or other charity work and this is becoming unsustainable. The possibility of us not being able to carry out all the work as we do at present is now becoming a reality. The hours some of us are putting in at the present spring planting is causing major concern.

We would very much appreciate a basic commitment of two hours a week on a Tuesday morning to maintain the areas, and a further commitment of extra hours for the spring and autumn planting in June and October.

Please do consider joining us, and help to keep our town as colourful as it has been for the last 15 years. The comments we get from people who speak to us when we are working in the town are always very favourable and it does seem that our efforts are appreciated. Never the less if we do not get the help from the townspeople then things will indeed change.

We will be holding this event rain or shine! rs

An excellent selection of used books are there to be browsed. On this occasion the church kitchen will be serving strawberry teas.

Huntersmoon, along Field Lane, is the starting point, where you can park your car or bikes and obtain the event passport, adults £2.50, entrance for children is free. There will be a marquee on the lawn serving refreshments including home baked cakes and we are also holding a raffle, with many prizes including a delightful quilt that was made especially for the event. We advise people coming in their car to come into Field Lane, Yarmouth Road end to park at Huntersmoon and then to take the short walk down the lane into White Horse Common to view the other gardens that are closely situated. The gardens are all very different and quite delightful and some of the garden owners will be selling plants on the day.

In addition, following their recent highly successful exhibition Maytime Medley at the church, Rosalie Osborn Gibb and Maureen Howson will be displaying more of their pictures. The village bee-keeper will be present to share the secrets of her calling and products from the hives will be available to purchase.

Some of the residents of White Horse Common, (just on the outskirts of North Walsham on the Happisburgh Road) are opening their gardens on Sunday 28 June from 12noon – 5pm. This is the very first time that White Horse Common has organised such an event and all the proceeds raised will go to East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The churchyard is noted for its richness in terms of the diversity of plant species. Hundreds of people came in February to see the snowdrops, in June there will be scores of other varieties, labelled for easy identification.

Call for entries for the Graham Allen Awards 2015

Renovation projects and new buildings that sensitively capture the distinctive character of our local architecture could be in line for a prestigious award from North Norfolk District Council (NNDC).

North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and renovation projects, and entries are now being sought for this year’s Graham Allen Awards, the annual NNDC awards for excellence in conservation and design. The closing date for entries is Tuesday 30 June.

The awards were inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late G.S. Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, to recognise the scheme that makes the biggest contribution to North Norfolk’s unique built heritage.

Winners have ranged from an extension to Binham Priory, refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market, and last year’s winner, the 14

restoration of Bessingham Manor.

… and the Love Affair Continues

Artist Colin Shreeve, who lives in North Walsham, is holding an exhibition of paintings this summer entitled ‘… and the Love Affair Continues’.

The exhibition celebrates 50 years of painting Norfolk’s landscape and wildlife and follows on from Colin’s last very successful exhibition entitled ‘A North Norfolk Love Affair’ in 2001.

Colin has lived in North Walsham all his life, being a founder player of the town’s Rugby Club and has played cricket for the county. He has been painting for over 30 years and says that during his career he has ‘been influenced by Edward Seago, Sir Peter Scott and, of course, the landscape of North and East Norfolk’.

His upcoming exhibition includes saltmarshes, reedbeds and the wildlife that live there and Colin feels the paintings that he will be showing in July are some of the best he has produced.

Possibly his last exhibition, Colin would welcome visitors to the exhibition in the Hobart Gallery at Blickling Hall from 15 to 20 July.

Kim opened a very busy May meeting and after the business was conducted, Marian our delegate for the AGM read out and explained the chosen resolution - this prompted a lively debate with the result that Marian was offered a discretionary vote to cast on the day.

A visit to Gressenhall is planned for Thursday 23 July and payment needs to be made at the June meeting. The Centenary dinner at the Scarborough Hill Hotel has now been confirmed as Friday 16 October. The Centenary card competition for this event is a design, using absolutely any medium you choose but it has to be capable of reduction to A6, entries need to be submitted by July at the very latest.

We finished our evening with an extremely enjoyable beetle drive, which became quite competitive. Prizes were awarded for the highest and lowest scores and an extra prize for artistic merit. Well done to all the prize winners and a thank you to the committee for organising this event.

Our next meeting is 10 June and the speaker is Mrs Hazel Gillingham (Mary Seacole the other nurse of Crimea).

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at St Benet Hall at 7.15pm. With 212,000 members already enjoying WI friendship, why not come and join us. Please contact Kim Reynolds for details on 01692 406246.

these photos, as there has been numerous requests to see them again. All attempts have been unsuccessful until earlier this year when Suzie Sharp, from the High School contacted us to say she had uncovered them. The archive group shared these on our Facebook page in two stages, because of the sheer quantit,. and sent the Facebook page into a frenzy. The activity on the page was unprecedented and saw hundreds of new members join the group. Where possible, these will be displayed on their original mountings, just as they were in the sports hall corridors.

To compliment the photographic exhibition, on the Thursday evening at 7pm in The Atrium Theatre, the renowned local historian and member of the archive group, Brian Hedge, will lead a slideshow of archive photographs and narrative on both ‘The North Walsham and Dilham Canal’ and ‘The Norfolk Broads’. Tickets for this are £5 and the cafe bar will be open from 6pm for you to share your own memories. The Showcase Gallery will also be launching a new book on North Walsham at this event.

The archive group is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers with the aim of collecting the town’s history and making it available for everybody. We do this via our lively Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/ NorthWalshamArchive and via our dedicated website at www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk and you can contact us via either website. We are always interested in adding to the collection and do not keep originals, we just borrow them to scan so we can share them with the community and keep them safe for future generations. Please get in touch if you think you may have something of interest.

Local businesses come together for the Nelson’s Journey Smiles Awards

Over 170 people from 25 local businesses attended the inaugural Nelsons Journey Smiles Awards, last month at Sprowston Manor. The awards ceremony, which recognised the contribution ofthe local corporate community to the work of the charity, crowned winners in 8 categories, from 23 nominees, with one ‘Overall Impact Award’ winner being chosen from all those nominated.

The BBC’s David Whiteley presided over the awards, which were announced and handed over by members of Nelson’s Journey’s Youth Panel, a group of young volunteers, many of

whom have used a service from the child bereavement charity. The judges of the awards included last year’s High Sheriff of Norfolk, Lady Pippa Dannatt and former HM Coroner for Norfolk, Bill Armstrong OBE.

Winners on the night included Aviva for the ‘Employee Contribution Award’, sponsored by East of England Co-op, recognising the support that their employees give to the charity, everything from bake sales and helping with making resources, to offering a team of employees to help as ‘muscle’ during the move to Smiles House.

The husband and wife team Pippa and Mark Redmond at Norwich Print Solutions were awarded the ‘Major Sponsor Recognition Award’, sponsored by Almary Green and Smith & Pinching, for their work with the Nelson’s Journey Christmas Quiz, which has raised nearly £20,000 in three years. The judges felt that “for a small company to make such a massive and dedicated commitment to Nelson’s Journey over three years has to be commended.”

Overall winners on the night were Ashton KCJ who won the ‘Overall Impact Award’, sponsored by Ruth Elizabeth Events Ltd. This recognises the long-term commitment that the solicitors firm gave the charity by providing a ‘home’ for them within their Meridian Business Park offices. This saved Nelson’s Journey around £80,000 over the four years they spent at the firm. The judges commented that “Ashton KCJ provided a very considerable benefit in kind, never wavered from their support, despite the length of Nelson’s Journey’s tenure with them and the fact that staff members increased from five to 13, which is truly admirable.”

who was involved, especially the event’s sponsors. Each year we receive more and more support from local companies, and last year we saw over £115,000 raised from the business community in Norfolk. In addition to this we also had support through employee volunteering and donations of resources and services, saving us even more money. This backing is invaluable in allowing us to help the growing numbers of children and young people who are referred to us each year for bereavement support.”

For more information about Nelson’s Journey, please visit their website at www.nelsonsjourney.org.uk.

Gena Moore, Corporate Funding and Marketing Officer from Nelson’s Journey explained why the event was so important “It was brilliant to have business supporters, old and new, all in one place to bethanked and recognised by the charity. Film Camera Action

On Friday 15 May a small group of BTEC and A Level Media students visited Scottow Enterprise Park (the ex RAF Base in Coltishall) to get first-hand experience of a film being shot by the Independent television company October Films.

Staff and students were given a tour of the film location, including the props and costume department and the production sets. It was also an amazing opportunity to discuss the film with the on-site post-production team. Students were given a sneak peak of an edited sequence and were able to observe the film crew in action as they shot a scene in the middle of the abandoned runway!

All good fun and really great experience for students to see what life is like on a film set and ask questions to professionals about breaking into the creative industry.

The

Liz Underdown is the familiar face at the heart of the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and its sister ensemble, The Norfolk Jazz Quartet.

WHITE HORSE Overstrand

Her musical pedigree extends far beyond playing bass in the rhythm section of jazz bands however and, through her teaching, is able to develop and encourage many young and not so young musicians.

Fathers Day

Liz started to play trumpet when she was eight years old and moved on to double bass following a demonstration at her school when she was ten. She thought it was an “unusual but cool instrument”. She was recruited to the Bromley Youth Chamber and Symphony Orchestra to play bass, which led to her playing at The Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and touring Austria and Spain. After leaving school, she gained a B.A. Hons. Degree in music from Exeter University and she is now a full-time school music teacher. Liz also plays piano, and is known to have the occasional burst on the ukulele. Not very many people know that!

Liz is increasing her private teaching and if you think that she might be able to help you learn and develop as a musician you can contact her on 01692 630927. A sign for the times in Aylsham Just in time for the Spring Bank Holiday, Aylsham Community Partnership unveiled a striking new sign directing visitors to the town’s Heritage Centre.

From left: Gerry Grimes (Treasurer, Aylsham Community Partnership), Jayne Andrew (Heritage Centre Manager), Giles Margarson, Revd Andrew Beane. kneeling are Richard and Maureen Burr

The sign, made in oak by John Leaf of Matlaske woodcarvers, was designed to fit and blend with the existing church sign and Aylsham Parish Church vicar Revd Andrew Beane was on hand for the unveiling on Wednesday 13 May.

The sign was constructed from oak donated by Aylsham residents Maureen and Richard Burr while Broadland District Council made funds available to cover the cost of carving.

Commenting on the sign, Aylsham Community Partnership chairman Giles Margarson said “The Heritage Centre is a lovely building, sitting in the churchyard. It is a great resourced for the town as well as an attraction for visitors. With the new sign, we believe visitor numbers will increase, allowing more people to enjoy what the Centre has to offer.

Where there is a Will there is a way!

be able to claim against your Estate. In order to help protect against this possibility you can either make it clear in the Will or in a separate document why you are excluding that person. There are also additional precautions that can be taken to ensure that the validity of the Will is not contested in the future. It is therefore better to pay for a properly prepared Will than allow your Estate to face a costly claim in the future.

Written by Kiri Nichols – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr

In today’s litigious society there is an increasing possibility of relatives making a claim against an estate. This is on the basis that the deceased did not make reasonable provision for them in their Will and can make an estate administration long and expensive.

Under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 a person can make a claim if they fall into one of six categories:• Spouse or civil partner of the deceased. • Former spouse or civil partner of the deceased (who has not remarried or registered a new civil partnership). • Any person who during the period of two years immediately before the death was living in the same household as the deceased’s spouse or civil partner. • Child of the deceased. • Anyone treated by the deceased as a child of the family. • Any other person who immediately before

the death was being maintained by the deceased.

The claimant has to show the Court that under the Will the deceased did not make reasonable financial provision for them.

The Judicial and Court Statistics published in 2010 appear to show that there has not been a significant increase in the number of claims being issued in Court. However, this view is not necessarily shared by probate lawyers (or their indemnity insurers) who are adamant there has been a huge increase in clients with probate issues. So how can you avoid your estate being faced with a claim?

Making a Will for your dependants will ensure that the whole of your estate is available to provide for your loved ones. However, it may be that you wish to ensure certain people do not benefit. If your Will omits someone who falls within one of the above categories, they may

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Since the last issue, several cats that had gone missing in the area have been reunited with their owners, primarily because they were micro chipped. In one instance, one of the cats re-homed by us had been missing for several years and you may have read about this in the local press. Another, unbeknown to his owner, had taken up residence under her car and ran off when she stopped at traffic lights. This was another instance, where it was possible to reunite cat with owner, because he was chipped. We were also able to confirm that another runaway was indeed one recently

re-homed by us who had escaped while her owner was fitting a cat flap.

Several other cats have been posted as missing on the face book pages of local vets and it has been a relief to see that these too have been found. It increases the odds of finding your cat if you do get it chipped (the vets very often have special deals for this) and then, should it go missing, advise your neighbour(s), the local vets, Animal Rescue websites (we have a link to one on the Lost and Found page on our website) and even post it on face book. These are good ways to achieve a successful outcome.

Because Cats Protection see so many unwanted kittens each year, our head office is working with the Pet Advertising Advisory Group to try and identify where cats are used to repeatedly breed kittens for commercial gain. They are

also concerned at the number of adverts that go online offering kittens, usually for sale for a lot of money, that are for instance “part Persian” or “part Tookey, one of the older girls Bengal” as in care when you look at the photo you can only see a sweet little moggie. They are at present talking with volunteers across the country to trying to find where this is happening and intend to use the information to protect the cats and prevent poorly kittens being bred. They will be sharing this information with government to hopefully introduce changes in the law to prevent this. Over the years some of the mums and kittens that have arrived in our care have not been well looked after, so we welcome this initiative and hope they succeed in their aims. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www. northwalsham. cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Celebrating 25 Years of Steam in the Bure Valley

When British Railways closed the line from Wroxham to Aylsham in 1982 and the track was lifted in 1984, many thought this to be the end of the route as a railway. Through the vision and drive of a committed group of enthusiasts and collaboration with a supportive local authority, the 15” gauge Bure Valley Railway was opened on 10th July 1990. The railway had a fleet of new, high quality, purpose built coaches, but no locomotives to haul them. To overcome this problem, locomotives were hired in from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway in Kent. Twenty five years after opening the Bure Valley Railway is steaming ahead and will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on 10th July 2015.

To celebrate this milestone the Railway will hold its Steam Back in Time event on Friday 10th July. This event will see the return to Norfolk of Winston Churchill from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, the locomotive which hauled the very first train. All passengers on this day only will travel at the same fares as when the Railway first opened in 1990 (Adults £5.50, Juniors £3.95 and Under 5’s Free).

The celebrations will continue over the weekend of 11th & 12th July with a Steam Gala including two engines visiting from the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway in Kent, In addition to Winston Churchill, Green Goddess will also make a return to Norfolk. They will be hauling trains alongside the home fleet of Bure Valley Railway engines with an intensive service in operation on both days (Adults £12.50, Juniors £6.50 and Under 5s Free).

Andrew Barnes, General Manager of the Railway, says “through the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the Railway has developed into a thriving and self-sustaining tourist attraction for all ages. The scale of our trains are very popular with the younger audience and our disabled coaches allow wheelchair users and able-bodied passengers to travel together.”

Trains are now operating daily to the end of October with special events throughout the year, including Santa and Mince Pie Specials. The railway also offers a very popular boat train which gives the opportunity for a journey by steam followed by a cruise on the Norfolk Broads. For those who would like to realise their childhood ambitions to be a train driver, Driver Experience Courses are available during off-peak periods. Facilities at the Railway include a café and a large shop selling model railways and gift at Aylsham with a souvenir shop at Wroxham. The Whistlestop Café seats up to 80 people and can provide everything from a cup of tea to a full meal with a roast lunch on the menu every Sunday. There is free parking at both stations.

From Snails to Pizzas Fully Insured

Aylsham High School’s Nurture Group had a great time making pizza last month as part of a visit from representatives of Aylsham’s Cittaslow Committee. Giles Margarson, chairman of the Committee, was accompanied by Mo Anderson-Dungar and Town Clerk, Sue Lake, between them explaining what Cittaslow is all about and how it benefits the town.

Rather than just a talk though, Giles, Mo and Sue used the pizzas as a metaphor for how the community comes together via Cittaslow: the pizza base represented Aylsham itself, the tomato paste the town’s infrastructure while the toppings are the local people. Cittaslow’s emblem of a snail was also discussed with the youngsters learning that ‘Cittaslow’ translates as ‘Slow Town’ so the use of

the snail emblem is particularly appropriate.

The local community and its infrastructure was further highlighted by a discussion on how money spent with local businesses in the town often stays in the town to support the local economy.

Commenting on the event, the High School’s Head of Nurture, Danny Sweatman said “What a fabulous afternoon! Thank you Giles, Mo and Sue for providing such an interesting talk pitched perfectly for our young people. They thoroughly enjoyed it and I know they will now be very keen to do what they can to support our community even further.”

Aylsham is currently one of only five towns in the UK which have met the strict entry criteria

North Walsham Times 472 June 6th 2015

of the Cittaslow movement, that internationally includes 147 towns in 24 countries. Cittaslow status is an accreditation that acknowledges the dedication and commitment of community members who work hard to make their part of the world a healthier, greener, happier, slower place to inhabit. raised even higher. With the recent completion of the tower work, 2015 has already been a memorable year for both the church and the town, and this promises to be another memorable event - don't miss it!"

On Saturday 4 July, two of North Norfolk's choirs will be joining forces for a spectacular selection of choral music. Items sung by the combined voices of the Cantamus Choir and the men and boys voices of St Nicholas, North Walsham will include music from two coronations, themes from both the big and small screen and a rousing rendition of the most famous choral work of them all, the Hallelujah Chorus by G.F. Handel.

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis Junior Tournament and Trophy Night Complete Season

The junior tournament at North Walsham Sports Centre has now become the traditional last action of the season and this year saw 23 under-sixteen’s from the North Walsham and Aylsham junior sections compete over three and a half hours. There were two singles events with one for current League players and one for non-League players to gain valuable experience in a friendly environment and as ever the sporting manner of the afternoon was a credit to all the players (and coaches) involved. The format of both competitions saw the players split into two groups where they played each other on a round robin basis over two sets with the total points added to determine who would progress to the semifinals. In Group B of the League player’s competition Carrie Last finished on top with 103 points, just four ahead of second placed Fletcher Dyson on 99. Group A finished incredibly tight – Stuart Hook finished top of PREMIER DIVISION Team Gresham’s School A NWSC 'A' Outlaws Backhanders NWSC 'D' NWSC 'B' Sharks Poachers

the standings with 106 points, but both Tom Wardle and Owain Atthill tied in second place on 94 points with the fourth and fifth placed competitors edged out with 93 and 92 points! As Wardle had beaten Atthill in their group game, this meant he progressed to the semifinals and incredibly this procedure had to be reverted to in both groups of the non League player’s competition – the groups were topped by Jake Woolston and Harry Ling, but George Bolton and Charlie Woodhouse in Group A and Liam Waller and Tom Rooke in Group B tied in second and in both cases the former had beaten the latter in their Group matches and hence advanced to the semi-finals. Despite losing the first set, Dyson won the second against Hook by a better margin to advance to the final where he met Last who had won two tight sets against Wardle in her semi-final. With Bolton and Waller beating Ling and Woolston in the semi-finals, the scene was set

perfectly for two North Walsham against Aylsham finals. In the final of the League player’s event, Aylsham’s Dyson won the first against Walsham’s Last 11-5. Last saved two set-points at 8-10 in the second, before having a chance of her own but Dyson came through 13-11. Last saved a second championship point with a very fortunate net-cord in the third, but Dyson took his third to close out the win 11-8. There was further success for Aylsham in the non League player’s event – Waller had only been with the club for six weeks, but won the final against Bolton. Waller needed a few set-points and also saved one to take the opener 14-12 before running out a winner in straight. The day concluded with the presentation of trophies which was made by Peter Ward and included one for Thomas Rooke who was named most improved player. The curtain officially came down on the season with the AGM and trophy presentation night which was held at the regular venue of the Lighthouse Inn, Walcott. The trophy presentations to all League, Cup and Championship winners were made by Dave Dewbury of League Sponsor Star Paving Services. Several trophies were collected by home players including NWSCA picking up the Knockout Doubles Cup while the Natwest Junior player was named as Carrie Last.

Zumba for Charity

There will be a charity Zumbathon taught by ‘Zumba Jules’ at North Walsham Community Centre on Sunday 28 June at 9.15am.

The charity is the Mesothelioma Society. Mesothelioma is an awful disease caused by exposure to asbestos and there is no cure. Jules explains ‘I lost my lovely dad aged 61 to this disease 13 years ago, and I am doing this in memory of him. You can either pay £10 entry fee or raise by sponsorship. It is for three hours, however you do not have to do the three hours, you can do one or two whatever you wish. I hope you can come bring friends or if you cannot make it, you can donate to the Just Giving page. Also, if anyone can donate any raffle prizes, all will be gratefully received. Please come along for fun exercise in disguise!
