NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
The Trust held its third annual Canal-side information Event at Ebridge Mill pond on 6/7 June by kind permission of the owners, The Old Canal Co. Ltd.
The weather was so sunny and enjoyable, which made the setting even more picturesque. Unfortunately, this year there were no useable boats available but the tented areas of the chamber island were all full of information and things of interest.
It was so pleasing that visitors spent much more time than usual asking about and discussing various aspects of the restoration. A further 250 signatures were added to the petition (already over 2,500 names on it) to continue the process of restoration work. All the visitors were very impressed by the improvements made since most of the canal between Ebridge and Spa Common had been de-silted since 2011.
Most recollections were that there had been no further flooding reported in North Walsham since that time (the canal is the natural drain for North Walsham and its environs), fish had returned and grown to a catchable size, carefully avoiding otters, which can occasionally be seen, many kinds of water birds now visit on a regular basis or are resident, kingfisher often seen flying upstream through the lock, water voles are now much more evident, mainly due to the prepared banks and the

constant water level, frogspawn and emerging baby frogs are in great abundance, the swans nesting at Spa Common have hatched nine cygnets this year (only three last year) and the general canal-side vegetation and flowers present a feeling of peace and quiet in this tranquil spot of beauty.
One of the tents contained books and bric-a-brac, another a constant playing DVD of the canal, maps, photos old and new, historical books, actual findings taken from the spoil, plants and membership enquiries, with a further 22 folk joining the Trust (details of membership from Sue on 01603 429872). Cubs go Pond Dipping
North Walsham Friday Cub Pack arrived at the Bluebell Pond at 9am on Saturday 13 June, fully equipped with everything needed to carry out an adventure in the art of pond dipping.
Rain did not deter them, and when it was time to go home, the faces of these young children confirmed that they had a wonderful time down at the pond.

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST
Continued from front cover... Some action photos of Work Parties, which at the moment are generally held every two weeks on Sundays, may have inspired 14 serious enquiries to join in (details David 01603 738648). There were working model boats and yachts of the new Ebridge Model Boating Club (for details contact John on 01692 584223) which, when sailing in the stiff breeze, were of great interest to the many onlookers, as well as tombola, a draw for a hand-made quilt, which was won by D Gosling of North Walsham, a draw for several hand-made bags of various designs, refreshments in a seated area, lovely ice cream by Dave of Didi Dianes Cornish Ice Cream and a very welcome guest appearance of our friends in the Vintage and Classic Tractor Club, with their machines of course.
It was very pleasing to see so many people arriving with their own kayaks/canoes and paddling off in the direction of Spa Common. Sadly, however, no sailing dinghies were presented - maybe next time?
The Mill buildings, already partially converted into residential properties, provided a further line of interest with many people peering through the windows at the wonders inside.

North Walsham Festival
North Walsham’s first town Festival reaches its climax this weekend with plenty of local talent on show, a welcome return of a parade through town, and a fun day on the Memorial Park. The Festival, organised by the Arts North Norfolk charity, has seen a full week of events, with local school children, musicians, artists and performers all taking part.
Organised as part of the charity’s development plan, the Festival has been supported by Arts Council England.
Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk, said “We wanted to use the arts and Festival setting to inspire local people to develop the sense of community in North Walsham. “People often share memories of the town’s activities, and attitudes of townsfolk of the past and we wanted to rekindle that spirit. North Walsham is a lovely market town with lots to offer – and the Festival can help profile this to residents and visitors alike.
“It’s the Festival’s first year and we’re planning for growth and ability to respond to what the town would like in its namesake festival going forward. We’re relying on them to get involved and support the biggest event

Business in the Community's Give & Gain Day
On Friday 15 May, Waitrose North Walsham took part in their annual 'Business in the Community's Give & Gain Day'. Six Partners from Waitrose North Walsham volunteered their time by painting the kitchen and front door and working in the garden area, Pastor Ros Peedle was ''absolutely delighted that Waitrose could offer their time in this way and this will be a great help in progressing this project forward .''

Orchestras Live North Norfolk
This year, North Norfolk is again hosting Orchestras Live North Norfolk, a series of the highest quality orchestral concerts developed by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) in partnership with Orchestras Live and community organisations.
The concerts will be taking place in Ludham in July, Trunch in October and Cromer in November.
The series begins on Wednesday 15 July by welcoming back the internationally acclaimed European Union Chamber Orchestra (EUOC) to the beautiful village of Ludham. For a contrasting and enthralling evening, don’t miss Warlock’s captivating Capriol Suite and the eloquent interpretation of stunning classics by Mozart and Haydn, as well as the performance of a specially-commissioned orchestral piece by local composer Jane Wells combining talented young instrumentalists with the EUCO professionals.
With the exceptional acoustics of St Botolph’s Church in Trunch, audiences on Saturday 10 October will be left spellbound by the world class wind soloists from Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment performing an evening of masterpieces by Mozart and Myslivecek.
The series concludes on Saturday 28 November at Cromer Parish Church with the much anticipated return of the exceptionally talented London Mozart Players, this year performing with Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society. A finale guaranteed to be an exciting evening of 20th century classics including the beautiful Vespers by Norfolkbased composer Richard Allain, showcasing north Norfolk’s most illustrious choral tones. Paston’s new Art and Fashion show venue
Paston Sixth Form College officially opened the new Griffon studios and theatre on Thursday 11 June. The new facilities were opened by Rob John, an ex Paston Vice Principal and successful playwright who has written numerous plays for Radio 4. Rob also writes and directs many local plays and set up the award winning Far East Youth Theatre Group based at Paston. Rob said “the new facilities were amazing and provide brilliant learning environments for current and future students”. After the opening a packed audience was treated to a Fashion Show with students modelling an incredible range of clothes they had designed throughout the year. This was followed by the drama students giving a performance of ‘The Boy Preference’, which had received outstanding reviews from Photo: Greg Hayward the press.
Over the three days hundreds of visitors packed in to the new studios to see all the student work on display. Students in the new Photography studio demonstrated how the dark room was being used to create some stunning photography work. In the new Graphics area there was some brilliant design work showing how creative students can be using different materials. This year the show had expanded to include Media work, which showcased a number of different films, including animated films made by the students.
Principal Kevin Grieve said “this was the best Art Show we have ever had and what a time to open up our new facilities to continue to develop the brilliant artistic talent in this region” North Walsham Times 473 June 27th 2015

Sainsbury’s North Walsham raises £3070 for SERV Norfolk • • •
Sainsbury’s North Walsham has raised £3070 for SERV Norfolk, as part of the Local Charity of the Year scheme.
The charity provides an out-of-hours motorcycle and car response service, without any charge, to Norfolk’s NHS hospitals using volunteer riders and drivers. They operate 365 nights a year and deliver urgently needed supplies of blood, blood products and donated human breast milk or take samples for urgent analysis. The group was chosen by customers and colleagues last June and has received support from the store for the past year.
Activities have included monthly second hand book stalls, colleague canteen cake and craft days and a quiz night. One of the store’s colleagues is a volunteer coordinator with SERV Norfolk, and takes calls from hospitals requiring the service then contacts the rider on duty to set them out on their job that night.
Neil Grainger, Store Manager of Sainsbury’s North Walsham, said “We’ve had an excellent year supporting SERV Norfolk, our customers and colleagues have got involved with a number of fundraising activities. We’d like to thank everyone at SERV Norfolk for making it such a brilliant partnership.”
Danny Willcox from SERV Norfolk , added “We would like to thank the customers, colleagues and the community at Sainsbury’s in North Walsham for their support over the past year to keep our wheels moving. It has made such a difference to SERV Norfolk and we’re extremely grateful for the donations and awareness we’ve been able to raise.”
Customers can vote for the store’s new partner from 15 – 28 June in-store and online at www.sainsburyslocalcharity.co.uk. Sainsbury’s North Walsham has shortlisted:
Arts North Norfolk North Norfolk Community Transport The National Coastwatch, Mundesley
All three charities will be displaying posters to showcase the work their group does in the community on a board at the front of the store for at least a week before the vote.
Our picture was taken at ‘VE Day 70 Years On’ in the park in North Walsham on 10 May when SERV Norfolk attended. Danny Willcox, in white, is behind the bike with two other SERV volunteers with Felicity from Sainsbury’s safely enjoying sitting on the bike like so many other visitors to the park on that lovely sunny Sunday.

Antingham Village Hall
We said goodbye - hopefully for not too long - to our Chair and Vice Chair John and Margaret Lake who retired after a very full two years. We shall miss them very much and hope they will return to the Committee when they have had a suitable rest. They were presented with an engraved vase as a small thank you for all their hard work. We also said goodbye to Barbara Rogers after many years on the Committee and Barbara was presented with a bouquet of flowers for all her hard work, we shall also miss her. Unfortunately, we are now short of committee members and hope that more will come forward to help us - we meet once a month for about 1.5 hours so the duties are not too onerous. 14
TO SANTA CLAUS AND PUT IT UP THE CHIMNEY.’ SHE SAID ‘CAN’T WE JUST TEXT HIM?’ ULRIKA JONSSON
We would also like to remind the villagers of Antingham that we have a newspaper disposal bin in the grounds of the Village Hall and the proceeds go towards the hall so please consider using this instead of putting your papers in the green bins. There is also a bin for bottles just before you get to the Village Hall and again the proceeds go towards the Hall but please take your rubbish home with you as it is so unsightly. Can we also remind those of you that like to attend a Whist Drive that a Whist Drive is held on the 3rd Friday of each month in the Hall starting a 7.30 pm - a raffle is also held. Do come along you will be most welcome.
On Friday 10 July at 7.30 pm we have a Quiz Night, £7 per person which includes Fish and Chips supper – again a raffle will also be held.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER
PAINTING PARADISE: THE ART OF THE GARDEN
eye-catchingly beautiful and medicinally useful and also the great baroque gardens with their parterres and box hedges, their tree-flanked walkways and canal-fed fountains all laid out on a previously unimaginable scale.
A trip to London to visit the Chelsea Flower Show gave me the opportunity to see the changing of the guard and an excellent ‘gardening’ exhibition in the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace.
The exhibition draws on the many riches of the Royal Collection, bringing together a wide selection of treasures – primarily paintings and drawings but with manuscripts, tapestries, furniture, porcelain, jewellery and even the tiny wheelbarrow and gardening tools used by Queen Victoria as a child.
The exhibition divides the history of the garden into broad chronological sections including the splendour of the Renaissance garden with its sophistication and formality and its fascination with labyrinths and topiary, knot gardens and obelisks. It speaks of an age when the garden first became a royal status symbol.
Then there are the botanic gardens which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries, as ships returned from the West Indies, North America and the East, laden with new species, both
This was followed by the horticultural profusions of the 19th century, when England became a green-fingered nation and the informal cottage gardens of both royal and commoner alike became the backdrops of family life.
A host of artistically significant works help to illustrate this chronology. There are botanical drawings by Leonardo; a Rembrandt painting that (The exhibition is at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace until October 11). depicts the newly risen Christ as a gardener Bob Wilkinson complete with sunhat and spade and pruning knife; Gainsborough presents the Duke of Cumberland and his wife parading Our summer planting is now complete and we are all very pleased with the elegantly through result. Whether you are interested in the way they placed cloches in the 18th century, the political influence of the pineapple or the history of knot garden patterns this is an informative and fascinating show and it even includes a mention for North Norfolk. A manuscript presented to Queen Alexandra, which contains Francis Bacon’s classic garden essay (‘God Almighty first planted a Garden and indeed, it is the purest of human pleasures. It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man’ etc) is accompanied by a painting of a floral border at Sandringham.

Ray’s ‘Sunbeams’ shone brightly
There is an on-going debate in photographic circles as to what constitutes a true photograph, and with the advance of manipulative software such as Photoshop, when does an image stop being a photograph and start being graphic art?
However, Ray Woolcock – a spritely 80 year old from North Walsham - has no qualms about these boundaries - he embraces innovation and has the confidence to try new approaches. His enthusiasm for experimenting with ideas and newly discovered techniques is both refreshing and inspiring.
Ray’s route into photography did not follow the usual path of long obsessive hours in the dark room although he did show an aptitude for it as early as 1952, when he was 18. With a friend, he cycled to Cornwall and back over nine days, taking ‘snaps’ with his Kodak Kershaw along the way. He was cajoled into entering three of these holiday snaps in competition run by the Norfolk Education Committee, and won 1st and 2nd place in the Landscape section. However, another 60 years were to pass before Ray received another award for photography, which was winning 3rd place in a North Walsham Photographic Group’s competition!
When Ray was 18, he attended Norwich Art College where he learned the skills of design, perspective and composition,
honing these skills when he joined a builders’ firm, an eclectic company which allowed him to work in a variety of situations, including restoration work on Blicking. He then had the good fortune to work for John Hedgecoe, the award winning photographer, for 12 years on the Oxnead Estate, eventually forced to retire due to severe arthritis.
However, Ray was never one for remaining static for too long and, in 2009 he started learning to use a computer, and with this new skill came a revived interest in photography. He treated himself to a Canon 50D and a macro lens, adding a range of lenses and a Canon 5D camera over the following years. He joined the Norfolk Photography Group in Mundesley, then the North Walsham Photographic Group (NWPG), and later became a member of the Buxton Photographic Club. His enthusiasm to learn new tricks is tempered only by his determination to succeed and success came last year in the NWPG Annual Competition, with the public recognition and appreciation of his work: his print of ‘Sunbeams’ was a clear winner in ‘The People’s Choice’. A richly deserved award!
tion will be held between 18 - 22 August at the Atrium. Last year there were 184 entries, 10 for the junior category (U16), although the group is hoping to see many more juniors this year. The theme is ‘Images of Norfolk’; anyone needing inspiration could look at the website: ournorfolk.org.uk!
If you are interested in entering, please go to the group’s own website nw-pg.co.uk for all information, or contact the competition secretary, Rachel, on 01692 406526.

Watsons Branch Manager says Thank You to Seaview PreSchool
On Wednesday 3rd June, Caroline Lake, branch manager at Watsons Property, Cromer, paid a visit to Seaview PreSchool in Cromer to say a big thank you to all the children for designing and decorating their ship’s wheel which forms part of the ‘The Wheely Wonderful Ship’s Wheel Art Trail’ around Cromer through the summer, as a part of the Cromer & Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival.
Chrystal Howes, senior practitioner for Seaview Pre-school commented “This has been a really fantastic opportunity to work with Watsons Property, the children were very excited about decorating the ship’s wheel. We needed to consider our very young age group of 2-4yrs, so it all started with the children sticking coloured pieces of paper all over the wheel and then each child created their own butterfly with their face on it, and these were all then stuck on too. We are very proud of how it has turned out and we really did have a wonderful time creating it. With the help of donations from parents we are really hoping we will be able to bid and win the wheel back for our school”.
When the trail finishes, all the wheels around Cromer will be auctioned off with all funds raised being donated to local charities & organisations. North Walsham Times 473 June 27th 2015

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
While we have had some kittens come into care this year, their numbers have been less than normal. We do, however, have several more litters waiting to come in once they are old enough to leave their mothers, who are often then neutered with help from the branch. The kittens will have a health check at the vets and be chipped and vaccinated at our expense, before going to a new home. When we take the kittens into care we are always happy to help their owners with the neutering of the mother cats. Unfortunately, not all kittens receive this level of care before finding a new home as, sadly, many are re-homed without any checks being made and the mother cat has litter after litter, which is not much of a life for her.
We recently took in two young cats and a kitten from a household where there were health problems, which meant they could not keep them. While talking to the owner it became clear that he did not realize, until after his young cats became pregnant, that a cat can get pregnant from about 4 months old. We know that a lot of people are not aware of this and, as a consequence, many young cats do get pregnant before they have finished growing themselves. It does indeed stunt their kittens’ growth and they are often smaller than normal and do not thrive so well. The owner wished he had known this as he would have taken action to try and prevent his lovely, well cared for cats, from having kittens.
On 5th July we will be holding the Hog Roast at Dilham once again. Tickets can be obtained via Stephanie on the ‘cat phone’. If you wish to attend please call her as numbers are limited. We also have many other fund raising events in the pipeline including a stall at the Fun Day in North Walsham on 28 June.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage

“If only they could talk!
“If only they could talk!” This is a sentiment many pet owners, and vets alike, often think. Certainly our job as vets would be much easier if our patients could tell us if they felt unwell or had early signs of more serious disease. Although they can’t, we are fortunate that there have been huge progressions in animal health care which allows us to detect early markers of disease. This is never more relevant than in our senior patients and has been the driving force behind the initiation of our Elderly Wellness Clinics.
Screening checks are something integral to our own health service and we feel it should be no different for our pets. They are an opportunity to identify problems that can affect older animals’ quality of life such as dental problems, heart disease and mobility problems, as well as screening for conditions we can diagnose early with blood tests, such as diabetes, liver , kidney and thyroid problems. Our Elderly Cat and Dog Wellness Clinics include a 20 minute consultation with a vet, full blood analysis, thyroid test (for cats) and urine analysis (when samples can be obtained!).
One recent patient who has benefitted from her vigilant owner and screening tests was Patch, a 12 year old domestic short haired cat. Patch had not quite been herself for some time, but not shown any specific signs of illness. On examination she had lost a little weight, but was otherwise OK so we ran survey blood tests which revealed liver changes. Subsequent ultrasound exam and liver aspirates confirmed a chronic Patch inflammatory liver disease, which if left untreated would have led to liver failure. Fortunately, early diagnosis of the condition has enabled us to treat Patch who is now back up to her normal weight and has a vitality her owners thought was long gone.
Cats in particular are masters at hiding symptoms so if you have concerns about your pet, or would just like to have them checked out then just give the surgery a call on 01692 403202, the clinics are available for all “well” cats and dogs over the age of 8 years.

Holkham Celebrates Anniversary of Signing of the Magna Carta
The Historic Houses Association’s (HHA) member houses, including Holkham Hall, are hosting special events this year to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta.
You are invited to follow in the footsteps of families who have played a pivotal role in paving the way for the rights we enjoy today. Sir Edward Coke Holkham Hall will be holding an exhibition on the role of Sir Edward Coke, one of England’s foremost jurists, and founder of the family fortunes for his Coke descendants, later the Earls of Leicester, at Holkham. His reinterpretation and use of Magna Carta helped to limit the powers of the Stuart kings and, when opposing them, he used Magna Carta to help draw up The Petition of Rights. The exhibition will include some of his manuscripts and books from the Library and Archives, demonstrating the crucial importance that he attached to Magna Carta.
In 1628, as a precondition to granting any future taxes, parliament forced King Charles I to assent to The Petition of Rights. This asked for a settlement of parliament’s complaints against the King’s nonparliamentary taxation and imprisonments without trial, plus the unlawfulness of martial law and forced billets.
More than 100 years later, the cry at the Boston Tea Party of “no taxation without representation” highlighted one of the major grievances of the American colonies and so provides a direct link back to Sir Edward Coke’s interpretation of Clause 12 of Magna Carta from the original 1215 manuscript.
Holkham’s exhibition will run from 14 June to 29 October. It is part of the nationwide event, LiberTeas, where we take tea to celebrate the role of Magna Carta in protecting our liberties.
Rejuvenate, Rebalance, Restore Holistic Health Therapies
Hi, I’m Karen. I have recently moved to Norfolk from London where I have been working as an ITEC and Vodder trained registered therapist for 15 years. Based in Northrepps, I will now be working as a mobile therapist in Cromer, Sheringham, Overstrand, Mundesley, Holt and North Walsham.
My therapies include holistic massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and manual lymph drainage (MLD), including compression bandaging and limb measuring for compression garments.
MLD is an extremely relaxing therapy, which affects the nervous system with direct analgesic (pain relieving) and stress relieving effects. MLD treatments are advised for pre and post-operative surgery, in particular facial surgery and liposuction, to improve healing and reduce the recovery time following surgery. Treatments help reduce fluid retention, swelling and puffiness, as well as inflammation and bruising. MLD is also treatment for lymphoedema and lipoedema and a variety of other conditions including constipation, IBS, migraine and sleep deprivation. MLD facials (non-surgical facelifts) are extremely relaxing, reducing dark circles, puffiness and sinusitis problems.
Holistic therapies have great physiological and psychological benefits. To book treatments and for information please contact me directly on 07583 973050 or via my website www.holistichealththerapies.co.uk or via www.mlduk.org.uk.
I look forward to meeting you soon. Karen Modle (Registered Therapist MLDUK)

The Station raised £250 and we would like to thank everyone for their support and look forward to Mayday next year Happisburgh RNLI has joined the 21st century! For years the Station has had problems with poor internet connection. This made it hard for the crew to download training videos and other training information from the RNLI College. The Station has now been connected via WiSpire, which has made it possible to download training videos to enable the crew to keep updated with the latest information and then to be the best they can in saving lives at sea. Set up in 2011, WiSpire Ltd was originally focused at bridging the ‘digital divide’ that exists in rural communities that suffer from poor broadband connectivity. Since then the company has grown to a complete IT Solutions provider, not just supplying connectivity for residential properties, but bespoke Hybrid Internet and Network Solutions for businesses and schools across the county.
By investing in new technology, WiSpire Ltd provides bespoke services for customers in relation to Fibre and Wireless connectivity, IT Managed Services and Telecoms Solutions, whilst also offering the option to be hosted within a Secure Data Facility just outside Norwich.

Gresham’s Prep GoGoDragon gets ready for the Schools’ trail
SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER«
With over a 100 schools taking part in this year’s GoGoDragon Schools’ trail in Norwich, Gresham’s Prep in Holt, hosted a ‘Design the School Dragon’ competition to find the best designs for its own Gresham’s GoGoDragon.
Two Year 8 pupils had their entries selected and together with pupils at the school have recently completed the dragon’s design ready for the exhibition this summer.
Zelia Holmes and Archie Osborne's Grasshopper based on Keith Haring designs were chosen as the winning entries, with Cate May and Elfie Anema-Galpin runners-up in the competition.
Sophie Li-Rocchi, Head of Art at Gresham’s Prep said "It has been very exciting to have our very own GoGoDragon to decorate for the Norwich art trail. It has captured the imagination of the whole school and everyone has enjoyed watching Hopper come to life. The pupils have been inspired with some amazing designs and I Cate May, Archie Osborne and am really proud of their creElfie Anema-Galpin ative efforts and interest. We can't wait to see our dragon on display and look forward to having him return to live with us at the school in September."
Thanks to the Prep School Parents’ Association, a GoGoDragon was purchased for the school earlier this year and work to design the Dragon began this term. Hopper the Dragon is now finally finished, thanks to Zelia, Archie and all the pupils at the school. Hopper will now go on display in Norwich from 4th July until early September 2015. See if you can find him.

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival www.tfcs.co.uk
The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July. The festivals have been running for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance, to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk.
Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of over £13,500 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to Sheringham Woodfields School. This year we will be giving donations to both Sheringham Woodfields School and Sheringham Playpark Revamp Project. Every year the floral arrangements of the festival are designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was ‘Journeys and Adventures’ and our photos from the festival give a flavour of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in covering their subject. The first depicts a journey across the wilderness before reaching a beautiful oasis and the second a journey across the Antarctic.
This year’s Festival theme, ‘A Touch of Wonder’ will be depicted by around 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.
www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk
Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members. Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, stained glass art, Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various quizzes. Newto this year’s Festival will be a supervised children’s activity area on the Saturday and an unsupervised acivty area on the Thursday and Friday of the festival.
Catering forms a major part of the Festival and many past visitors have complimented us on the quality of light unches, cream teas and the extensive choice of cakes that are on offer. Overall, a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival can be considered a great day out. Opening times of the Festival are 10am to 5pm Thursday, Friday and, Saturday and 12 noon to 6 pm on Sunday. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities.
Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information on St Andrews Church in general can be found on our web site
www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk
We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

The Club’s speaker last month, David Morton, possessed a particular insight into the Palace, enhanced by his father having formerly been a member of the Royal household.
The story began in 1532 when Henry V111 purchased 4,882 acres of land, ten acres of which include the present site. The Palace is the epicentre of the Common wealth and the Queen’s realm. It employs 750 staff, of which 450 are residential. James I attempted unsuccessfully to develop the manufacture of silk on the site, but was forced to abandon the project when it was discovered that the mulberry trees selected were not suitable for the silk worms.

cabin where you can experience the cramped conditions for the wherry’s crew.
The site ceased to be a royal residence during the reign of Charles II when it was acquired by Lord Astor of Forfar, and later John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham, albeit through royal patronage. It regained its royal status when King George III sought a suitable home for his bride, Princess Charlotte of Mecklenberg, by means of a compulsory purchase order of £28,000, at the latter part of the 18th century.
Improvements to the building were placed into the hands of John Nash, a well known 19th century architect, but he fell from favour when the estimated costs escalated from £253,000 to £800,000. Matters were not improved by his successor George IV, whose expenditure created serious national embarrassment. This proved to be a defining stage in royal finances and led to the introduction of the Civil List and its approval by a collective decision through Parliament.
The accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 saw a feminine influence brought to the Palace in the form of nursery facilities. Her son, Edward VII, encountered problems when he asked for money to make improvements, but was able reach a compromise by creation of Victoria memorial, erected at the end of the Mall, dedicated to the nation.
King George V succeeded in making improvements in 1913, including the replacement of the soft Caen stone with Portland stone, within a period of three months.
Critics of royal expenditure may note that while the present Civil List stands at £36 million, the invisible earnings to the nation are estimated to be in the region of £140 million.

Six girls from North Walsham Gymnastic Club proud of their place at County Squad level
Earlier in the year six girls from the Club earned a prestigious place in the Norfolk County Squad. This consists of a group of the very best gymnasts in Norfolk who get together five times a year to challenge themselves and the coaches further in one of the most physically demanding sports.
A grant of £12,000 towards a total project cost of £15,000 has enabled the club to buy and erect a new club house, connect a water and electricity supply and install paving and fencing.
The Bowls Club had to undergo an unexpected move following the re-development of its former home, the Dilham Cross Keys pub. Smallburgh Village Hall offered land on its playing field and volunteers went on to help level the new site and lay the bowling green.
Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I am delighted that NNDC’s Big Society Fund has been able to support the Bowls Club in its quest to establish a new home.
“The club has demonstrated a strong will to reach out to the community by encouraging people of all ages to take up bowls. They’ve also indicated an intention to work with Stalham Sports Centre to encourage greater participation and thus the sustainability of the club so I am very pleased to see that NNDC has been able to play a part in supporting the development of their new home and their long term future.”

A few months ago, we reported on the success of North Walsham Gymnastics Club who had several gymnasts compete at the Norfolk County Grades Competition. Three of the gymnasts went on to compete at the Regional final in Ipswich with each putting in a polished display, after hours of training and dedication.
Alexis Thurston said ‘I was extremely proud of the girls who did their best performance on the day, competing against some outstanding gymnasts across the region, including the well known South Essex and Huntington clubs who have produced Olympic medalists. Many of the competitors train considerably more hours and in purpose built facilities so credit to our girls for their achievement’.
If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the club for fun or to compete, please make contact via the website www.north-walsham-gymnastic-club.co.uk. There is currently a waiting list but the club hope that once they have their own premises more classes will be available to meet the demand of the local community.
