BBC's Antiques Road Trip Visits Timeline Antiques TV antiques expert Thomas Plant visited Timeline Antiques in North Walsham last month during filming for the popular BBC series, Antiques Road Trip.
Competing against fellow expert Mark Stacey, who was visiting other locations in North Norfolk, Thomas Plant visited Timeline Antiques and purchased items from the centre to sell at auction at Oakham Auction Centre in Rutland at a later date. Timeline owner Michael Jones said the BBC filmed for approximately three hours and he would expect the programme to be broadcast in the autumn.

A Hobbit came to Millfield!
The school hall at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was magically transformed to ‘The Shire’ for Silver Birch’s class assembly. The class had been reading The Hobbit and using its concepts for their English work this half term, and were excited to perform an abridged version of the first few chapters.
Bilbo Baggins, brilliantly played by Parys Bayes-Hole, had the most lines to learn, which she managed to do within two days! The children watched a magical characterisation of Gandalf, played by Tegan Ettridge, who introduced twelve amazingly costumed dwarfs. Bilbo’s journey then took the children into the campsite of three scary trolls - again a sterling and humorous performance captivated the audience before leading them to an encounter with Golum.
Max Harrison, who totally embodied the character complete with Golum’s voice, mesmerised the audience and would have given Andy Serkis a run for his money! All of the children gave an awe-inspiring performance and thunderous applause greeted the end of their fantastic performance.
The class was enormously thankful to Mr Wilton, one of the parents. who had made an amazing Bilbo Baggin’s Hobbit door, which looked like it could have easily come from the set of the movie!

New Garden Area at Millfield Pre School Millfield Pre School have celebrated the opening of their new garden area, which has been made possible by the money raised from being Sainsburys Charity of the Year 2013 to 2014.
The garden has been transformed to include a brand new paved area with raised beds, a new digging area for the children to explore for bugs, a new sandpit and the planting of new trees, which will make for a wonderful garden for children to enjoy now and in the future.
The Pre School would like to take the opportunity to say a special thank you to the team at Sainsburys whose fundraising enabled the school to make these exciting changes to the garden.
Japan meets Millfield!
A memorable day was had by all at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, when the whole school took part in a Japanese Day and came dressed in either the traditional Japanese costume or in the colours of the Japanese flag. The day was organised by Mr Smith (our international links co-ordinator) and one of the reception teachers, Miss Tataryn, who had lived in Japan for a while and could explain all about their culture. The day further developed the children’s awareness of different cultures and the children enjoyed an array of activities, some of which included making sushi, making Japanese fans and carp wind socks, art techniques and a Japanese dance and movement session as well as learning some Japanese from Miss Tataryn. The children enthusiastically embraced the traditions and culture of Japan and particularly enjoyed the dance activity. One pupil declared that this was one of the best culture days they had had and they couldn’t wait for the next!

North Norfolk Speakers Club
Joanne Oakley was presented with Toastmaster of the Year Award recently at North Norfolk Speakers Club. Joanne, who is currently studying for her degree at UEA, joined the club to improve her presentation and speaking skills. ‘Joining North Norfolk Speakers Club was the best thing I’ve ever done,’ said Joanne. ‘I’m flattered to have received the award and it was so nice to be accepted into the group from day one’.
At North Norfolk Speakers Club, Joanne has developed her skills in public speaking with a relaxed style and sense of humour. ‘Joanne’s positive approach and ability to meet a variety of speaking challenges with determination and a smile, has made her a very worthy winner of this award’, said club president David McNaughter, who presented the award. North Norfolk Speakers Club meets every other Wednesday at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Ave. For further information visit www.nnsc.co.uk , email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com, or contact Gillian 01692 650250

NWJS Fiver Challenge
Throughout June, the Year 5 pupils of The Federation of North Walsham Infant, Junior and Nursery Schools became budding entrepreneurs by taking part in the Virgin Money Fiver Challenge. The children all put together business plans in order to bid for a £5 investment to start up their ventures, and they threw themselves into creating a wide range of items to be sold during and after school.
New installations and full service on all models
LPG & NATURAL GAS
Stalls were set up to sell the products at the town market on Thursday 18 June and all profits will be used by the children in school to buy something they all vote on.
5 Year Parts & Labour Manufacturers’ Warranty on all Boilers
The annual challenge, sponsored and provided by Virgin Money, is a firm part of the curriculum in Upper School, as it provides a unique insight into the world of business, profit/loss and money management. We are proud of the high standards and enthusiasm shown by all the pupils- they will be able to draw upon this experience in their future careers to become the next Richard Branson perhaps ...
Joe’s Café at Dilham Pre School
Dilham Pre-schoolers have been looking at the book 'Joe's Cafe' by Rose Impey.
They have made mud pies, slug stew and caterpillar cakes - just like Joe. They wrote their own menus and played in our cafe indoors. They enjoyed this so much they then invited their families to their own 'real' cafe where they waited on tables, wrote down orders, prepared food, washed up and finally took their customers' money! A lovely morning was had by all!
If you would like to visit Dilham Pre-school and/or add your child's name to our waiting list of starters for September please telephone Paula on 07818 264929 or Sue on 01692 535692.

It’s gradually turning into a wonderful summer and we are extremely busy here in the Gem of the Norfolk Coast. The vegetable garden is looking fantastic, with a dense foliage of broad and runner beans and a small forest of rhubard – all meticulously tended by the Estate Manager Emeritus - and so far we have only lost three kitchen porters in the search for new potatoes. It’s well worth it because the potatoes are delicious.
We ran a beetroot and blackcurrant mousse on the Spring menu which was absolutely superb – sharp and succulent with gorgeous, bright flavours – and in general mousses are a great

Thorpe Market Church History Project
When there are events at St Margaret’s Church we are constantly approached by visitors who delight in telling us that they were married at the church.
In preparation for a future local history day, we would like to be able to have a display of ‘Weddings through the Years’. If you yourself, or someone you know, has such an affinity with our village church PLEASE encourage them to contact us on info@thorpemarket.org.uk
With modern technology there is no need for anyone to part with cherished family memories, a simple scan is all that is needed. Early 20th century, or who knows, even late 19th century would be a wonderful discovery. All the wedding registers are held at the County Records Office so we have access to details of all the weddings, even pre-dating photographs.

We have even had mention of wedding dresses still lurking in attics. Any reminiscences, anecdotes and especially pictures would be very welcomed.
This will be quite a big project and if there is anyone with family connections who would like to be part of collating and preparing material for display, please do contact us.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently had problems with our branch phone line. Initially with lots of background noise but latterly, the phone has been dead when Stephanie answers or the answer phone starts its message. We cannot even transfer calls, which we normally do when Stephanie is on holiday, as BT have taken this facility away while trying to find the cause. As Stephanie had the same problem with her own phone recently, and some of her neighbours have been affected too, we are hoping that the problems will be resolved by the time you read this.
When giving a home to a cat for the first time, one of the most important purchases will be a cat basket for transporting your cat safely when visiting the vets or a cattery. These come in various shapes, sizes and materials so it is important to make sure you get one which offers security and is the right size for the cat in question (please remember if acquiring for a kitten, it will get much bigger). It may be because of problems in the past, (when cats have escaped from what has been believed to be a secure carrier) that, recently, several manufacturers have been indicating a weight restriction on their products. Although the basket may be large enough to hold the cat comfortably, if it is too heavy when lifted by the handle, it can pull slightly apart, allowing the cat to make an unscheduled exit. When buying a new basket, please take this into consideration. If, however, you already have a basket and are not sure whether or not it is completely secure, hold it underneath rather than by the handle.

Most people using Lyngate Road in North Walsham will be aware of the stall selling goods to raise money for the cats at Sharon’s home. All the items for sale have been donated to us by cat loving members of the community to raise money for the cats in care. Sadly, recently, there have been some items taken from the stall without payment, Abbie would like a new home including a wicker cat basket. What sort now that her kittens have left us of person does this we might ask? Not our sort of person and not a true cat lover. Perhaps someone has taken the goods to make money for themselves, even if they have not got a cat. Should you be offered a wicker cat basket, please be aware it could be the one stolen from the stall.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special campaign mentioned in the last article.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

PROfessional and BUSiness = Probus
If you are retired and looking to widen your circle of friends, Aylsham Probus could be your answer. Probus is an international organisation, which had its beginnings in the mid 1960s when retired members of Rotary Club in Welwyn Garden City started to meet together in the form of a luncheon club. The Rotary District took up the idea, looking to sponsor such clubs elsewhere and as a result three businessmen, all approaching retirement and realising a need for fellowship got together to form what eventually became Probus.
The name Probus comes from the first three letters of PROfessional and BUSiness, having the additional advantage that it is the root of the Latin for ‘probity’.
Such was the success of this innovative organisation that just ten years later there were branches in New Zealand and Australia with Canada following in the 1980s. Today’s Probus can boast representation in the USA, Belgium, South Africa and India, alongside other groups in Africa and Asia.
Each Probus branch is autonomous, deciding for itself what activities are available for members. In Aylsham, meetings take place every first and third Tuesday morning in the Aylsham Lodge Hotel on Norwich Road. A typical gathering will start with an opportunity to chat over a cup of tea or coffee and this will be followed by a speaker. Recent subjects have ranged from Air Sea Rescue to Prison Mentoring, Morris Dancing to Queen Victoria and travel, together with autobiographical talks from members. The morning can be rounded off with a visit to the hotel’s well-stocked bar!
Colin Graham, left, receives the Probus Chairman’s medallion from immediate past Chairman David Martin
We’ll help you stand out so more buyers come in Our expert team of property consultants will use comprehensive marketing to showcase your house to the widest audience possible. So you’ll never miss out on a potential buyer.
Like the majority of Probus Clubs, Aylsham, which was established in the mid-1980s, is aimed principally at retired men but two or three times a year events, usually including lunch, are organised to include wives, partners and friends.
Probus is entirely non-profit making so membership is kept down to a very reasonable £35 a year to cover the cost of venue hire and speakers’ fees. For more information or to arrange a visit to the Club, give Secretary Eric Bone a call on 01263 731172 or email ericandmargie@btinternet.com

Record Breaking Doodle Challenge – Calling all doodlers: We need you! 3 August
Libraries across North Norfolk are to challenge children this summer to create the longest ever drawing…and it is all going to be created using every day sticky-notes!
• Mundesley between 2.30pm – 4.30pm on Tuesday 4 August • Fakenham between 10am – 12noon on Wednesday 5 August
During the summer holidays, children are being asked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note that best illustrates why they love to visit their local library. The doodles will be put together to make a record breaking piece of bunting. The record attempt is part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, an annual event, produced by The Reading Agency and delivered by the library network across the country to inspire all children to read their choice of library books whilst collecting stickers to complete the fold - up poster.
• Wells-next-the-Sea between 1.30pm – 3.30pm on Wednesday 5 August • Holt between 10am – 1pm on Friday 7 August • Sheringham between 11am – 1pm on Monday 10 August • North Walsham between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 11 August
These workshops are sponsored by FALCON (www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk) which aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.
To help inspire the children, local illustrator, Adam Faulconbridge, will be running free workshops in all eight North Norfolk libraries. At each session he will introduce and demonstrate many different types of book illustration from comic book drawings and Japanese Manga style, to traditional printing methods and classroom doodles before each child tries them out.
Throughout the summer the children can drop-off their doodles on sticky-notes to their local library (whilst they pick up their latest book to read!) to contribute to their own library’s paper chain of doodles (they might draw just the one – they might draw twenty…it is up to them). Who knows there may be a bit of ‘friendly’ inter-library competition to see who can create, and contribute, the longest piece of bunting?
Don’t miss Adam at your nearest library -
• Cromer between 11am – 1pm on Tuesday 28 July
• Stalham between 11am – 1pm on Monday
All the doodles will be joined together to
make a record breaking string of bunting and displayed on Cromer Pier on Saturday 5 September at 2pm. Come and join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee.
Don’t miss being part of Norfolk Libraries attempt to create a record for the most people of all ages listening to the same story at the same time. Julia Donaldson’s ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ will be read at 11.15am on Saturday 25 July in a library near you.
New for 2015 - a special summer challenge for pre-school children and 11-18 year olds can join ImagiNation, where they can go wild with ideas for art, music, photography and poetry - all inspired by the books they enjoy over the summer.
Get the whole family reading this summer by visiting any Norfolk Library or mobile library. Look out too for other special Record Breakers themed events over the summer at your local library.
To find out more information, and to pick up your poster, pop into any Norfolk Library or mobile library. For library opening times visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries Find out more at the Summer Reading Challenge website: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Flower Festival at North Walsham Methodist Church The members of the North Walsham Methodist Church in the year 1890 took the bold step to have a new place of worship erected and move from their building in Church Street. The project was completed and the move made therefore we, as the present members, are rejoicing in the fact that our place of worship has been in constant use for 125 years.
The earliest mention in the town’s history of ‘Methodism’ is found in a record for 1797 of a certain Richard Colls applying for a licence to use a building for the use as a ‘Methodist Chapel’. What or where that building was, has been lost in the midsts of time. The building in Church Street (now music and shoe shops) can be dated as early as 1820. The year 1807 saw a break-away of part of the movement which became known as the ‘Primitive Methodists’, the remaining section was called ‘Wesleyan Methodists’ and this part of the church was the one that occupied the building in Church Street. The Primitive Methodists officially started in the town in 1826 and held their services in a building in Hall Lane now used as a DIY shop. In 1932 a Deed of Union was passed in parliament unifying the Wesleyan, Primitive and United Methodist into one church called ‘Methodist’. Some two years later in 1934 the Primitives joined the Wesleyan and worshiped together in the present church on Grammar School Road.
The fact that the present building has for 125 years been used for worship is worth noting and as a congregation, we feel it only right to mark the event. After much consideration a series of events have been planed, some have already been and gone and been well received, several others are in the pipe line - the main one being the ‘Flower Festival and Exhibition’ taking place on Thursday 16, Friday 17, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July. Opening times will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 1pm. All the Church will be decorated and an exhibition of memorabilia will be set up in the Lounge, consisting of Baptismal and Marriage records, photos and printed articles. Of special
mention is the planned ‘Victorian Tea Room’ specialising in traditional cream teas plus cakes, pastries, various filled rolls and on Thursday and Saturday lunch time bacon rolls (special diets can be catered for). To add to your enjoyment, if the weather is kind, why not sit in our beautiful memorial garden
Trunch Village Open Gardens and Scarecrows
and enjoy your chosen snack and drink. There will also be various other stalls for your perusal.
Our aim is to attract people to come into our church and share some time learning that we are not a closed community but a welcoming, alive and living Christian church that has a pertinent message for today’s world. We strive to have a good range of activities throughout the week covering all age ranges and tastes, there is no bar to age or gender, all are welcome from birth to as old as you may feel. The church is used every Sunday for worship with a wide range of types of service on offer plus, of course, we are glad to be of service to anyone wishing to have a child baptised or for the very happy event of a wedding. We do, of course, understand that there is an end to every human life and we are only too pleased to offer sympathetic and considered help at such times.
To round off our weekend we propose to hold an open air service called ‘Praise in the Park’ on North Walsham Memorial Park on Sunday 19 July at 3pm. The Salvation Army Band will be there to accompany the singing and everyone will be most welcome at this service. Let us once more extend to all that read this article a warm and friendly welcome to our special weekend of joyful celebration, come and share, bring along your family and please tell all your friends.
Trunch Village Open Gardens & Scarecrow event will take place of Sunday 19 July from 10am - 4pm.
Guide/wristbands (required for entry to gardens, paddock and displays) are priced at adults £3 (U16s free) and are available from the Village Hall & Methodist Church, or one week in advance from Trunch Corner Stores.
Events include Open Gardens & Scarecrows, Classic Vehicles, Gun Dog Display at 11am, Dog Agility Demo at 12 noon and a Dog Show at 2pm. There will also be a Flower Show & Plant Stall, Radio Ham and Static Model Aeroplane displays, Quilting display & Refreshments in the Methodist Chapel, Art & Refreshments in the Church, Ploughmans Lunches etc in the Village Hall and a BBQ at the Social Club So lots to see and do!
All proceeds to Trunch Village Projects.

Building Excellence award wins for North Norfolk District Council
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) scooped two awards at the 2015 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on Friday 26 June.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of Building Control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards are a celebration of the best projects in the region (including Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk) for quality and compliance with building regulations.
The wins this year were for: • the best small housing development, awarded for Three Ties Barn Brumstead Road, Stalham
14
• the best social or affordable housing development, awarded for Goulders Lane, Felmingham
Cllr Sue Arnold, Portfolio Holder for Planning said “This is great news and reflects the excellent work which North Norfolk District Council Building Control team does, and showcases how they can help deliver award winning projects for their clients.”
The award winning projects will now go forward to the national awards held later this year in November. Both categories reflect the excellent work that is on-going in delivering good quality, sustainable housing in North Norfolk.
The awards were accepted on stage by the developers accompanied by Stuart Tate, Sue Wootton, Daniel Theobald and Elliott Schubert of NNDC’s Building Control department who attended the awards ceremony.
If you would like to share in this success, why not become a partner of North Norfolk District Council Building Control?
All of our surveying team have a wealth of experience in building control and we can assist with pre-application advice and plan checking, regardless of where your project is located within the country. Once work is in progress on site, the relevant Local Authority will take over inspection of the work in the usual way, from plans already approved by us, so you always have a consistency of approach and interpretation. For further details of how NNDC Building Control can help with your project, contact Stuart Tate, Building Control Manager on 01263 516132.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB Members were given an insight into the functioning of a large country estate during the 19th century when, Russell Yeoman, a voluntary worker at the Gunton Saw Mill, gave a presentation on the origin and purpose of the mill to the present day at the June meeting.
The mill was designed by William Haze, a local clockmaker, following the decision of the third Lord Suffield to improve the estate in 1821. The damming of two lakes with Gunton Park provided the power for the saw mill, which became a reality during the second quarter of the 19th century. The building was of timber and thatch, housing the mechanical saw
supplied by William Haze.
The purpose was to make the estate self sufficient, rather than for commercial trade. This did not prevent the mill being the focus of attention by the Swing rioters, who saw mechanisation depriving workers of their livelihood
Inevitably, technological advance meant the decline of the mill, which took place after the First World War, coinciding with the sale of the estate during 1913 and 1919. The Second World War saw a demand for timber which was met largely by contractors.
NORTH WALSHAM TOWN TWINNING
They say that time flies when you are having fun so it was no surprise that, when we blinked after six hectic days, the visit from our Bavarian Twin Town, Friesenried was over.
The party of 28 arrived in North Walsham via Stansted on 28 May and departed for home on 2 June. The welcome reception took place in the Atrium at the High School, where an excellent buffet meal provided by the members was enjoyed by all. After the usual welcome, speeches the visitors retired with their hosts to enjoy a quiet evening and to gather their strength for the coming days.
First on the Friday agenda was to be delivered to Holt for a steam train ride back to Sheringham where, due to very bad weather, I understand a lot of coffee was consumed! They met the bus there and were transferred to Cromer to explore and be blown off the pier. Living so far from the coast a seaside visit is always a fascination for the younger travellers especially when Michael turned up to teach them
how to liberate Cromer Crabs from the North Sea. This they thoroughly enjoyed.
Saturday was a complete contrast weather wise, now typical English sunny weather! It was off to Langham Glass at Fakenham for a very interesting and infomative glass blowing demonstration, before departing to Walsingham for some free time and to explore. The final part of the day was spent at Davenport's Magic Kingdom for a show and museum visit.
As ever Sunday is when the two committees meet to discuss the visit and make the first suggestions for the return match in 2016 before enjoying a free day with hosts. Monday was the cultural episode hosted in County Hall Norwich where, although it sounds a bit heavy, an interesting presentation and discussion on “Democratic engagement and civic participation within the E.U.” took place. Many questions were posed, and answers attempted. We thank the County
By the 1970s the mill was facing its demise when the Norfolk Industrial Archaeological Society arranged a survey. The last remaining member of the Suffield family, the Right Hon. Doris Harbord, signed a 999 year lease in 1979. Following her death three months later, the park was purchased by Kit Martin, who forwarded the restoration. The park is privately owned, but the mill is administered by the Norfolk Windmills Trust and is open six Sundays during the year, the remaining Sundays for the present year being on 26 July, 23 August and 27 September, from 2pm to 5pm
The Club’s next meeting is on 22 July when new members are welcomed. Ted Gadsden
Hall personnel for their participation and for helping with the language problems. This part of the programme was supported by Brussels with a grant towards the visit expenses.
Free time in Norwich followed along with a visit to the Castle Museum. Later that evening guests and hosts plus other members gathered in the Community Centre for our farewell meal and dance. Our friends departed at around 8am on Tuesday for their trip back home. The 28 guests were hosted by 16 host families and brought 12 first time visitors with them.
The Friends of Friesenried Association is now 34 years old and a credit to North Walsham but new members are required to ensure the longevity of this important link. Do not be put off by language as the Germans, by and large, are pretty good with their English and welcome us into their homes with great delight. These visits are great fun and it is surprising just what we learn about our different cultures. So, give it a go. Ring Margaret Foster on 01692 402669.

Non-surgical option for treatment of varicose veins
Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.
Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour.
Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.
Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.
Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.

Saturday Family Advice Mornings (available by appointment only)
The Point, 1 Augusta Street, Sheringham NR26 8LA If you’re thinking of separating, have a dispute with your ‘‘ex’’ over your children, or just want some family legal advice why not come along to one of our free family advice mornings for a chat? It’s the ideal opportunity to meet our specialist family law solicitors to talk through your situation and find out how we can help.
More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg, that can’t be seen at the surface.
The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.
Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Q: Why is the Duke of Westminster one of the richest men in Britain?
A: Because his late father’s estate was exempted from Inheritance Tax due to the ‘death on active service exemption’. The 4th Duke was shot in the knee during the Italian campaign in WWII. It was held that the injury accelerated his death 20 years later. It was a major reason behind the Grosvenor Estates being saved for the family.
‘Death on active service exemption’ is the oldest exemption in the long history of death duties (now called Inheritance Tax). It dates back to the reign of William and Mary and to the Probate Duty in 1694. It applies where the taxpayer died from a wound inflicted, accident occurring or disease contracted while on active service against an enemy or on other service of “a warlike nature” or involving the same risks. The death does not need to be on the battlefield: it is enough that the wound, accident or disease was inflicted, occurred or contracted when on active service. It does not need to be the only or direct pathological cause of death; it simply has to be a cause. The thinking is that those who give their life for their country should not pay tax to their country on their death.
This relief has been substantially extended and the reliefs increased by the Finance Act 2015. It now
01692 405301
covers search-and-rescue services such as coastguards and RNLI, the police, fire brigade, medical, ambulance and paramedic services; it also covers humanitarian aid workers. The person must die “while responding to emergency circumstances”. The death may occur later and relief applies if the injury sustained was one of the causes of death.
Louise Ellis
For the ‘constables and armed services personnel targeted because of their status exemption’ to apply it is immaterial whether the individual was carrying out his duties when attacked. It applies to both serving and former police officers and service personnel. The case of Fusilier Lee Rigby is a good example of such a death as are many Royal Ulster Constabulary officers killed in Northern Ireland over the years.

Weather from Ned Nimbus
Unfortunately, the forecast for the period April - June was correct and any positive changes in the next three months will be slow but, as we get into August and into September longer finer spells without interruption can be expected. With a mild winter many forecasters were expecting a warm spring and an early onset of a hot summer but a lot of cold air to the west of us, and a colder than normal North Atlantic and North Sea, cast into doubt such an expectation. The odd burst of warm air from the continent has quickly been displaced. This pattern will continue, always with the risk of thunderstorms, as the cold and warm air masses meet. This sort of setup is not unusual and, like most weather patterns, it has all happened before. Reporting is helping to highlight the more vigorous events and help us understand the complexities and the multitude of elements that influence nature's distribution of weather across the planet Ned Nimbus
