NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
The very hot weather we are experiencing at the moment is making our flowers bloom in a way that we have only been able to dream about in the last few years.
We are so pleased to see that all the fund raising we have carried out in the last year has resulted in these glorious displays. The Church doorway is looking the best it has looked at any time during the last five years, and we must thank the ladies of the Church who have agreed to supply water.
Our new tubs, which were installed last autumn, are working really well, and having large water reservoirs in the bottoms means that there

is never a shortage of water for the plants. Our two watering men go round twice a week and make sure all is full. We are in the process of buying even more of this type of tub so they will all be the same and all benefit from the same system.
We are however not so pleased to find that contractors are working in our beds on the Yarmouth Road. Large plastic bases have been put on top of the flowers, which are covered in dust and in a poor way. It seems such a shame that it is not possible for In Bloom to be advised in advance when this sort of work is about to take place, as this would then give us an opportunity to remove and store some of the more delicate plants until the work is finished. Perhaps some form of communication from who ever gives permission for this work to be done could be arranged in the future.

Millfield Primary School are Norfolk Champions
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham lived up to their motto of ‘Aim High’ last week when the football team won the Norfolk School Games County Finals.

Mr Smith, a year 3 teacher and P.E leader at Millfield, took the team, which included children from years 3 and 4, to the FCD at Bowthorpe for the finals. The team won all six matches, beating Woodlands 6-1 (Zak Cork scored a hat trick) North Wooton 4-2, Firside 6-0, QF St. Marys 4-0, and SF Fakenham 2-0 (with Isla Harrison, the only girl in the squad, winning ‘man’ of the match).
The final saw Zak Cork scoring four of the five goals beating Firside 5-1. Jak Cobbold did a sterling job as goalkeeper and kept the opposition’s goals from reaching their mark. Oscar Warburton, who is the team’s captain, was determined to play even with an injury and led them into victory. Mrs Herd, a teaching assistant and P.E instructor at Millfield and who accompanied the team said “The team’s spirit was sensational, even when they were losing at one point they never gave in or complained. All of the children were truly exceptional and I am so proud of the way they played and their positive attitude. Also the parental support at the game was fantastic, we really appreciated their help.” Medals were presented by Paralympic footballer Alastair Patrick Heselton who, when offered a place in the squad said, “I’ve seen you boys play and I’m not sure I’d get in!” The team celebrated the end of the final by filling the trophy with ice cream and plenty of chocolate sprinkles, kindly bought by Mrs Herd.
Euge! Adquirit
Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, was delighted to receive the news that, for a third year, one of their pupils had won a prize in the International Minimus Mythology Competition. The competition, which is part of the ‘Classics for All’ Latin project, always has a high level of entrants and Millfield’s entries were among those. They included poems, short story writing and art.
Pam Nethaus, who organises the competition, passed on the judge’s comments, which stated that prizes were given to original ideas and how well they were executed. They also remarked that the standard had been extremely high this year.
Mrs Price, who teaches Latin to the Year 5 and 6 groups, announced the runner up prize winner during a special assembly. “I am so delighted with all the entries this year and I am so proud of their commitment to the project” she said. “We always strive to do our best and they certainly did!” Isabella Rushen, was delighted to receive the award and enthused “I was so surprised to receive the prize - I didn’t expect it. It was a great competition!”

1940s Proms Party at Blickling Welcomes Cars from that Era
The sights and sounds of the 1940s will fill the air on Saturday 8 August, when Blickling Hall plays host to the “Last Night of the Blickling Proms” for the 4th year and organisers are encouraging owners of classic cars from the era, to come along.
Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said “As well as having music from the 1940s and offering a prize for the best-dressed, we thought it would be fantastic to have a special area where these beautiful, vintage cars can be parked so that other concert-goers have the opportunity to admire them. We have had several enquiries and think it will be another popular attraction on the evening. Anyone who owns a vintage vehicle from around this time should enquire about parking when booking their tickets through the box-office.”
John Postle from Aylsham is looking forward to coming along in his MG TC (pictured). He has owned the car for over 20 years after trading in his Austin and Healy Sprite in order to take ownership. “She was in quite good condition and I had always wanted one so when the opportunity presented itself, in Norfolk, I had to go for it! There aren’t many about as they were scrapped during the war for their metal and parts”. John’s interest in cars goes back to when he was 14 years old and his prize possession is a Triumph Gloria. “When I was growing up, our family car was a Triumph Gloria and as my interest in vintage cars grew, I was determined to try and find my father’s pride and joy and I did. I bought her in 1968 and I still have her now along with all the original paperwork.”
John has lived closed to Blickling all his life; his father was a radio engineer in the war and was stationed in nissen huts on the Blickling estate. The family have a strong local connection, as John explains: “My father started the Postles electrical business in 1922 and it has remained in the family ever since and is run today by my daughter
and son, Nikki and Jonathan.
“We’ve been involved with the proms event for the last four years and if previous events are anything to go by, it will be a fun evening. I’m looking forward to coming along in the MG and seeing some other classic cars too.”
Postles have four branches in North Norfolk including Aylsham, North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham and are the main local stockist of Stoves, this year’s title sponsors. Raffle tickets will be available to purchase in the Postles’ marquee on the evening and the
Music will be by Sinfonia Viva, led by conductor Roderick Dunk. Parking is FREE and guests can bring flags, bunting, picnics and wine and soak up the atmosphere with friends.

North Walsham Funday
Rain did not dampen the spirits of North Walsham on Sunday 28 June.
With the arrival of the Arts North Norfolk parade, North Walsham Memorial Park came alive with stalls, rides, classic vehicles and lots of people.
The Funday has been delighting the townsfolk since 2010 and each year sees it grow from strength to strength. More local groups are coming onboard to help put North Walsham on the map.
This year was a difficult one for the small committee who organise this event as they sadly lost a key member, Dave Robertson earlier this year. But the show must go on as they say…

North Walsham Launches New Community Project
FREE
North Walsham locals have been looking for ways to make their town a welcoming and accessible place for people with dementia and their carers.
VALUATION
The North Walsham Dementia Friendly Community project officially launched on Tuesday 21 July at the Atrium, North Walsham.
Brenda West, Mayor of North Walsham and Dementia Friendly North Walsham steering group member commented on behalf of the Town Council “It is important for North Walsham to be a Dementia Friendly Town as we wish to be an inclusive community to people of all ages who are living with dementia in all its diverse forms. We want them to feel safe and carry on with their lives as independently as possible, with the caring support of their local community.”
Prior to the launch, Year 11 students from North Walsham High School took part in Dementia Friends Information Sessions run by Clare Stiles of the Alzheimer’s Society. The students helped serve refreshments at the launch event.
Ros Fretwell, teacher of Health and Social Care at North Walsham High School commented “Getting the students involved in this project will hopefully be giving them an insight into the needs of the elderly in our community that we cannot get through simply sitting in the classroom. Many families have relatives that have dementia and may need support or help. The more we are aware of this condition, the easier it is for everyone to manage the difficulties that affect people living with dementia. It is really important that students studying Health and Social Care understand from first-hand experience by talking and working with carers, families and those affected by dementia. It was also a great opportunity for our youngsters, who after all, are going to be our future workforce."
This is the eighth Dementia Friendly Community project to be launched in partnership with Age UK Norfolk alongside the previous communities of Aylsham, Wymondham, Swaffham, Diss, Wayland, Hethersett and Wells-next-the-Sea.
The aim of Dementia Friendly Community projects is to unite the whole community in raising awareness and increasing the understanding of dementia so that people living with dementia and their carers are able to access the social life, businesses and amenities in their community and to live independently for longer in their own homes.
Jo Mountjoy-Dixon, Dementia Lead at Age UK Norfolk said “I am delighted to see so many communities want to do something so very positive and Age UK Norfolk is excited to be working in partnership to create the eighth dementia friendly community in Norfolk. The hard work this and other communities have done to raise awareness and challenge the stigma of dementia is beginning to shape the communities of tomorrow, where people with dementia and their carers could live in a more positive, accepting and caring environment. ”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Thankfully, the phone is working at present, although Stephanie has been advised that a new line needs to be fitted as ‘wear and tear’on the existing one has been the cause of the problems.
Most people are now aware that all our cats and kittens are either micro chipped before leaving for their new, or when they return to the vets for their second vaccination. However, they may not know that as well as chips migrating to other parts of the body, they can also come out or fail to register after a period of time (although this is quite rare). We recently re-homed a cat which had been micro chipped some time ago and confidently registered the said chip to its new owner. However, when he was taken to the vets by his new family, the chip could not be found. Fortunately, the family contacted us and we were able to arrange for him to have another chip inserted. As it takes very little time to run a scanner over an animal, vets are generally happy to do this when it is taken for treatment or annual vaccinations.
Fortunately, problems with micro chips do not occur that often, as illustrated recently when I received a call from one of our fosterers. She had been contacted by someone who had recently seen a ‘new’ cat appearing in her garden and, armed with her scanner, she went to investigate and discovered the cat was fortunately chipped. By checking the number on the chip registration website, I saw that the cat had been registered as missing and we were able to contact the owner, who was delighted to be reunited with her pet, which Ann, pretty little cat with a had been missing for just over a month. lovely white ruff It is such a lovely feeling for all concerned when this happens.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

NNDC Chairman pledges to raise funds and awareness
The new Chairman of North Norfolk District Council has pledged to fundraise for two charities that help local people.
Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds has chosen to support The Wensum Centre, a mental health charity in Fakenham, and the Benjamin Foundation – specifically the three Foundation projects:
• BOOM! – a young carers support and activity group • Steven Newing House in Fakenham, which offers accommodation for young people • Ben’s Workforce, a service for people in north Norfolk aged over 65 who need someone to do small maintenance and repair jobs around the home.
Cllr Claussen-Reynolds said “I am really keen to raise awareness and funds for these two very deserving causes”.
Debbie Brown, Co-ordinator at The Wensum Centre said “We are extremely pleased to have been chosen by Annie. It will make a huge difference to our work, raising awareness and provide much needed publicity”.
Chief Executive Tony Ing of the Benjamin Foundation added “We were absolutely delighted when we heard that The Benjamin Foundation had been chosen by Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds as one of the NNDC Chairman’s Charities for this civic year. We never take our support or supporters for granted and are always most grateful when we do receive this recognition from people and organisations who share an interest in our passion for helping vulnerable people in ways that provide them with hope, opportunity, stability and independence.
“I would like to personally thank Cllr Claussen-Reynolds for choosing us, in the knowledge this will help The Benjamin Foundation both in terms of raising awareness of what we are able to do and raising funds that will make a difference to the services we provide.”

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station News Coastal Safety Team – Respect the Water
Happisburgh Coastal Safety Team has now been up and running for the past 18 months, giving advice to people using the coast and inland waterways as part of the RNLI’s Respect the Water campaign. Respect the Water was launched on a truly national scale this summer. Activity started on Thursday 9 July and it will be the largest campaign the RNLI has ever run.
On 9 July we launched Respect the Water 2015 we held an event at Cromer to get our message over to the public. There was Lifeboat Crew, RNLI Lifeguards, Coastal Safety Team, Flood Rescue, as well as line throwing and a ton of water to show people the effect of RIP Currents. This year, the messages focus on three main issues, which remind people of the dangers at the coast:
You will see Respect the Water advertising in cinemas, on billboards and online, and you will hear them on the radio around the UK and Ireland.

WHITE HORSE OVERSTRAND
• Cold water shock • The unpredictable nature of the water (currents, waves and tides), and • Unexpected slips, trips and falls into the water Although our lifeboat crews and lifeguards save hundreds of lives, there are still around 160 lives lost
at the coast every year. In the UK alone, there were 167 drowning and coastal fatalities in 2013. We know that we need to stay focused on the core lifesaving service that saves hundreds of lives each year but if we want to change these statistics, we also need to build on our preventative work that protects countless lives from serious incidents Respect the Water is the RNLI campaign that puts drowning prevention at the heart of everything we do. It supports our aim to halve coastal fatalities by 2024. The campaign has been developed using best practice from other successful public safety campaigns, such as “Think!” and “Fire Kills”. We’re aiming to make it the nationally recognised water safety campaign in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Our water safety campaign.
Called into Action
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action by their pagers at 4.53pm on 8 July and the Douglas Paley launched into heavy seas at 5.02pm to a 25ft yacht, which appeared to be in difficulties by Reef 4 at Sea Palling. The call for assistance was made by Happisburgh Coast Watch.
Tim Grimmer was at the helm with Tony Phenix and Paul Hayter as crew. They made their way to Reef 4 at Sea Palling to find the yacht, ‘Ram III’, in difficulties inside Reef 4, with one male on board. The yacht had been trying to get into the lee of the Reefs, due to the rough sea conditions. On approach to the reefs her sails became entangled with the handrails and ripped these out of the deck, then became entangled with the sails, causing the craft to become un-manoeuvrable. The Lifeboat went alongside and positioned the yacht in a safe place to drop anchor then the crew helped the sailor to disentangle the sails and make the craft secure. One of the RNLI lifeguards also attended to give assistance. The sailor was then given safety information and advised to put a second anchor out due to the high tides expected that night The Lifeboat returned to Station at 6pm and made ready for service. Tim Grimmer said that “the sea conditions were very rough with a confused sea”.

Festival a Success as Local Talent is Celebrated
Arts North Norfolk have announced that plans for next year’s North Walsham Festival are already taking place, after hailing the very first festival, which took place 21-28 June a success.
Nearly 9,000 people took part in the week’s events, with over 200 artists and performers and 1,300 children and young people directly involved in activity.
The Festival Open Art Exhibition saw nearly 400 votes for the People’s Choice Award’. Rod Dyble, who lives in North Walsham with his painting of the town clock, won the award after very close results. Rod usually paints with oils on canvas and the winning piece was his first time using watercolours.
The Big Talent and Variety Show, which played to full houses, presented professional performers like magician Chris North and compere Joseph Ballard alongside local talent show entries. The audience voted for their favourite acts during the interval. The overall winner
was vocal group ‘Into The Crowd’, who all attend North Walsham High School. The adult category winner was percussionist Perry Miller, aka Dr Thunderoll and winner of the children’s category was the Tick Tocks, aged 7-9 who mixed dance and gymnastics and practise weekly at North Walsham Sports Centre – it was their first time performing in public too!
Joseph Ballard, director and Chief Executive of Arts North Norfolk said “The Festival was about making our town of North Walsham a destination for residents and visitors. The events attracted people of all ages and I am really pleased with the positive energy and feedback it has created locally.
Celebrating local talent is a very important thing for any Festival and we put the community into the centre of all events, including having both sets of awards from the talent show and exhibition voted by the public.
I’d like to heartedly thank all our Festival partners and hardworking volunteers for making our whole town proud of what we’ve achieved.”
The North Walsham Festival was supported by Arts Council England. Plans are underway for next year and anyone who would like to volunteer can get in touch with Arts North Norfolk. For more information on future events or classes and to get involved, pop into No. 1 Market Place (open Wednesday to Saturday), check out www.artsnorthnorfolk.org, 01692 218060 or email info@artsnorthnorfolk.org.

Our speaker for our July meeting was Neil Storey (Tudor Apothecary to Regency Barber Surgeon).
We were taken enthusiastically into the world of medicine, long before the advent of the NHS. To consult a doctor was expensive so most people would seek out the local hedge witch or quack. Diagnostic tools available included a type of astrological chart split into four parts and your birth sign, used to highlight the probability of certain medical problems. The Salvation Army pressed for birthing stools in the 18th century and, as births at that time were normally all in the home, the birthing stool was moved from birth to birth as necessary. We were told that leeches used 18

extensively in surgery, are still used today as a most efficient method of bloodletting. Toothache and decay were helped with oil of cloves and liquorish root. The Battle of Waterloo played a very important part in supplying the request for replacement teeth that the wealthy folk were demanding. The battleground with 50,000 corpses gave access to an abundance of teeth that were removed swiftly under the cover of darkness and were hitherto known as Waterloo teeth. The Barbers shop also offered medical services and would put their days work on show in the shop window to encourage other customers to experience their work. With Neil's fine storytelling, coupled with much original surgical equipment to look at, we all enjoyed it immensely.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GREEN MANURES
for example, or the frosted remains left as a mulch.
Readers might have noticed the ribbon of blue flowers flowing across farmland in Sheringham and Upper Sheringham. This plant is Phacelia tanacetifolia, which is not only attractive to bees but is a useful green manure. Green manures are fast growing plants sown to cover bare soil. Their foliage smothers weeds and their roots prevent soil erosion. When dug into the ground while still green, they return valuable nutrients to the soil and improve soil structure.
Green manures are useful on allotments or vegetable gardens and are usually sown in late summer or autumn and lock up ant nutrients, preventing them being washed away by winter rain. When dug in the following spring they release nutrients back into the soil. Green manures can also be used to cover bare patches of soil in the spaces between crops, or during intervals between one crop and the next. Fast-growing mustard sown before midSeptember can be incorporated in October,
Summer-grown green manures such as buckwheat and fenugreek form dense foliage that will effectively suppress weeds. Green manures that belong to the pea and bean family have the additional capacity of storing (fixing) nitrogen from the air to their root nodules, but only in summer.
Other benefits include protecting the soil from compaction by rain and shelter for beneficial insects such as ground beetles.
General advice on how to use green manures: • Sow seeds in rows, or broadcast them across the soil and rake into the surface • Once the land is needed for cropping, chop the foliage down and leave it to wilt • Dig the plants and foliage into the top 25 cm of soil • After digging in, the site should be left for two weeks or more before sowing or planting out as decaying green manures can hamper plant growth.
There are many cultivars to choose from, and the

following are some of those selected by the RHS: • Buckwheat: This half hardy annual will only grow well in spring and summer, best sown in April to August. Grows well on nutrientpoor soils. • Mustard: This annual crop from the brassica family should not be followed by other brassicas as it could encourage build up of the disease clubroot. • Grazing rye: This annual crop is good for soil structure and overwinters well; sow in August to November and dig in the following spring.
However there are a couple of potential problems –firstly, a dense carpet of green makes a perfect environment for slugs and snails, so control measures may be needed after green manuring and secondly, decaying green manures can suppress plant growth, so allow at least two weeks between incorporation and planting or sowing your vegetables.
Can I also remind everyone that the Sheringham Summer Show is to be held on 15 August in the Lighthouse Community Church, and although there are no prizes for green manure there will be classes for all sorts of vegetables as well as fruit, flowers, pot plants, cookery, handicrafts and flower arranging. Further details are available from the Show Secretary, Jo Hayton, on 01263 821463. Bob Wilkinson

‘Boobie cake bakes’ theme for Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal
The annual Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal has been launched in support of breast cancer patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
The Appeal, organised by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), asks people to get together with family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students on Friday 23 October for a fundraising afternoon tea party. This year the theme is ‘boobie cake bakes’ and people are encouraged to bake boobie-shaped cakes of all varieties. Proceeds from the Appeal will be used to support the charity’s ‘Bracode Campaign’; a world-leading five-year research study taking place at Addenbrooke’s, which could make personalised breast cancer diagnosis and treatment a reality.
Michelle Gray, ACT’s Head of Community Fundraising explains: “Researchers at Addenbrooke’s are amongst those who have recently revealed there are 10 different breast tumour types, which are related to patients’ DNA profiles. Changes in the DNA can be regarded a little bit like barcodes.
“It will cost £5,000 for the DNA sequencing, assessing and monitoring of each patient in the study. Through the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal we hope to raise £50,000 to enable 10 patients treated at the Cambridge Breast Unit to take part and help change the future of breast cancer.”
Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal tea party hosts will receive a party pack including balloons, banners and pin badges. If they
register before Friday 4 September they will be entered into a prize draw for an afternoon tea for two at Hotel Du Vin, Cambridge.
To order your Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal party pack or for details on any other events go to www.act4addenbrookes.org.uk/ ABCappeal, call 01223 217757 or email communityfundraising@addenbrookes.nhs.uk.

Summer Exhibition
The Summer Exhibition at The Gallery Norfolk features a wide range of oils, watercolours and silkscreen prints by our most popular artists , most of which has been inspired by Norfolk landscapes, seascapes and nature.
Taking pride of place is Leon Bunnewell; the galleries top-selling artist - Leon has been painted a series of new oils of the North Norfolk Coast. Also
his daughter Ruth Bunnewell (a rising star in the British landscape artist scene and featured in the July 2015 House and Garden magazine) has turned her attention to the Norfolk coast for the first time with new works of Holkham and Wells. There are a wide range of quirky watercolours by Norwichbased Eliose O'Hare and limited edition prints from other gallery favourites such as Andy Lovell, Chris Wormell and Sarah McMenemy.
It has always been part of the gallery's policy to make fine art affordable so prices range from £30 to £1,000 in the show.
ART EXHIBITION by Samuel Thomas
Celebrated Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas unveils an exciting and refreshing array of colourful pop-art inspired Norfolk Landscapes at an exhibition at the Red Lion Hotel, Brook St, Cromer from 14 – 31 August (10am – 8pm each day). The artist’s distinctive and contemporary yet timeless paintings are collected all over the world with limited edition signed prints starting at £95 each.
The Cromer-born artist opens his large 18-day solo exhibition co-inciding with Cromer Carnival. On display will be his vast portfolio of artwork alongside some new original paintings, one of which will be auctioned off in a silent-bid charity public auction. The highest bidder becomes the proud owner of the artwork knowing that the total sum will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The new painting selected for this auction is valued at £1400 by the gallery that represents the artist.
‘With the large crowd of people expected we are hoping the final selling price will be much higher’ explains the artist. ‘By supporting such valuable charitable causes I know that my artwork will make a real difference to everyone’ adds Samuel whom regularly sells artwork to clients as far as the USA and Japan.
Samuel prides himself on being a self-taught artist and he has developed a refreshing painting style that is truly unique, euphoric and mesmerising. This v aried exhibition showing vibrant Norfolk scenes designed to lift your spirits will show around 25 original paintings ranging from very small to large statement pieces from £395 up to £1500. Limited edition framed and unframed prints starting at £95 will be available alongside a large range of greeting cards. Samuel captures a sense of nostalgia in his works similar to the now iconic ‘Come to the Seaside’ rail posters of the 1920s but with a modern twist. These are not backwardlooking pastiches, but aspirational projections of the self into a better future.
The informal exhibition welcomes everyone and the Red Lion bar and restaurant overlooks Cromer’s seafront. All of the artwork is available to purchase at the exhibition but you can also order online at www.samuelthomasart.co.uk Entry is free. Ce le

Cromer’s First Ever Soapbox Derby designs included a high performance bicycle hybrid, an ambulance Soapbox, a metallic model that literally gave off smoke - driven by Tim Wright of Trunch, and a clever Steamtrain-esque Soapbox, representing North Norfolk Railways.
After a trial run of the course by rally cars provided by the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk, and some impromptu Mexican waves, the competition began in earnest. Times varied wildly from 1 minute 30 seconds to just 25 seconds. Despite the best attempts of the British climate, and the close calls of multiple runoffs, the day ended with a clear winner in each of the eight categories.
Overall Winner Peter MacMillan in his Soapbox
Cromer’s first ever Soapbox Derby was held to great attendance on Sunday 12th July. In front of an audiance to rival the Carnival itself, over 30 contestants launched from a ramp and down the slope of Runton Road to compete for several prizes in gravity powered Soapboxes, writes Isaac C-Knight.
The Soapbox course included a chicane made from straw bales and a ramp to test the steering skills of each driver and the handling of their Soapboxes.
The Soapboxes themselves were a spectacle. Some of the most memorable
Peter MacMillan of the White Horse, after winning the Pub division, entered the final standoff and became the overall winner and recipient of the Malcolm McGreadie shield prize.

Cromer’s first ever Soapbox Derby was a success, and perhaps marks what may become a familiar overture to Carnival Week in years to come.
The race has been planned for some time by the Carnival committee. After a suitable road with a slope was found, the council granted road closure. This allowed the event to go ahead.
In the words of Committee Chairman Tony Shipp, who also provided the announcements at the event, “We are always looking for something a bit different to mark the next Carnival event, and the Soapbox Derby provided that, as well as an extension to the Carnival season”.
The Carnival Committee also chose to hold the day outside on a different day to Carnival week, to create a different association with the event and, in years to come more stalls and events are planned to help the Soapbox Derby become an event in its own right.
Chief organiser of the event Bruce Stratton and the Carnival Committee would like give special thanks to the Cromer “Snowy” the Steamtrain Soapbox, businesses, who bought representing North Norfolk Railways banners at the event, for their support, and also to the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk, who also provided the rally cars that debuted the track prior to the Soapboxes, and timed the races to a professional standard.

IB Diploma results place Gresham’s pupils in top 4% worldwide
Gresham’s School in Holt has announced another great set of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results with its Sixth Form pupils achieving an average score of 34 points, five points above the worldwide average.
Douglas Robb, Headmaster of Gresham’s said “I am delighted with this year’s IB results. The pupils and their teachers have worked very hard and they should be congratulated on their achievements. The school has produced excellent results placing some of our pupils amongst the top 3.9% of pupils in the world.
Esme was a member of the school’s Crickets Choir (which is made up of the top ten singers in the Sixth Form) and performed in many school concerts including the annual House Music competition. She plays clarinet and saxophone and has some unusual pets including three alpacas and three tortoises.
Following their IB Diploma results, Gresham’s pupils have already secured places to study at a range of universities including Oxford, Exeter, UCL, Warwick and Loughborough.
â– L toR - Harriet Shaw from Scottow (who will study Geography â– at the University of Exeter), Esme Haywood from North Elmham (who will read Chemistry at the University of Oxford) and Hattie Rowan from Holt (who will study â– Modern Languages at the University of Warwick)
Head Girl, Esme Haywood, gained a score of 44 out of a maximum of 45 points, equivalent to 5A* at A level. Esme from North Elmham joined Gresham’s Prep in Year 5. When she progressed to the Senior School in Year 9, she was awarded the Edinburgh Academic scholarship and an Honorary Drama scholarship. In 2014, Esme was appointed Head of School following in the footsteps of her older sister, Sophia. Esme has accepted an offer to read Chemistry at Brasenose College, University of Oxford.
Esme said of her success, “I couldn’t have done this without my family and friends, they have been so supportive. The opportunities
available at Gresham’s allowed me to discover a wide range of activities and decide what to pursue. I owe so much to the support and teaching given to me by the school. When asked what she would like to do as a career she said, “I plan to take a gap year working at Gresham’s Prep, I want to get some work experience and give something back to the school which gave me such a great start. I don’t know what will come after Oxford but Chemistry opens up a wide variety of career paths.
â–
Overall 39 pupils sat the IB Diploma at Gresham’s this year. The average score awarded was 34 points compared to the global average score of 29 points. One pupil (Esme Haywood) achieved 44 points, only gained by approximately 0.7% of students globally. Four pupils achieved 40 points or above placing them in the top 3.9% of students worldwide.
Gresham’s provides both A levels and the IB Diploma in the Sixth Form enabling each student to choose the qualification most appropriate to their chosen career path. The school is now looking forward to receiving A level results later in the summer.

Fred Rolfe, under a pseudonym, wrote a book called ‘I Walked by Night’, first published in 1935.
Born in Pentney, Norfolk, in 1862, Fred badly let down his God-fearing father. He was expelled from primary school, although he did subsequently develop a love of reading and writing due to the encouragement of the local vicar. He was snaring small animals from a young age. In selling rabbits, he made money from the meat plus 6d a pelt (used in the making of hats).
On 6 November 1881, Fred entered Norwich

Frederick Rolfe, King of the Norfolk Poachers, was the subject of a very informative talk by Charlotte Paton at our July meeting.
work, fencing, garden clearance, general garden maintenance
prison to serve 14 days hard labour in lieu of a fine of ÂŁ1 15s 6d for poaching. This experience turned him forever against the law.
Upon release from prison, Fred quickly married 21 year old Anna. Two weeks after the wedding, daughter Edith was born but she died 9 months later of starvation. Babies were often weaned on “pap (mashed bread with skimmed milk). However as white flour became popular, bread lost its nutritional value and by this weaning method many children died of malnutrition.
Fred was doing some harvesting day work but he was still poaching. After a fight with two gamekeepers, he fled to Manchester whilst abandoned Anna died of TB. Fred returned to Norfolk in 1888 and served a second prison term. Upon his release, he sent for Kitty, a
young girl he had met in Manchester. Fred, with his criminal record, found it very hard to get work. He did find some employment as a gamekeeper, but once when there were no pheasants at his master’s shoot, he was sacked, again!
During WW1 he joined up as the regimental rat catcher. Fred had a wonderful war – three square meals a day and warm clothes! Afterwards, Fred turned his hand to anything, but still mostly poaching. On 23 March 1938 Fred died by suicide. This was not uncommon the future was bleak for elderly men in those days.
Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Thursday 6 August in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when Christopher Brooks will be talking about ‘Wartime Evacuees’. Visitors are warmly welcomed. Diana Velhagen

40 years of service to Aylsham It is 40 years since the first Victoria Sandwich was sold at Aylsham’s Country Market! In those days it was known as the WI Market (and many people still call it this) but it subsequently adopted the Country Market banner, part of the nationwide co-operative social enterprise which boasts 300 branches from Penzance in Cornwall to Ponteland in Northumberland and as far west as St David’s in Wales.
On 7 August, Aylsham Country Market will be celebrating its 40 year anniversary with a special morning featuring an array of tasters and special events, all open to the public. Held in the Town Hall from 8.30am to noon, there will be an Anniversary Cake, to be ceremoniously cut by one of the Market’s founder members, while current members will enjoy a lunch after the Market has closed.
On the Friday before these celebrations, 31 July, youngsters are being invited to the Market to help make paper bunting which will be strung up in the Town Hall on 7 August. In addition, there will be a fun quiz to take away and bring back
with the answers, again on 7 August, with a lovely prize for one lucky winner.

Mundesley Medical Centre Celebrates Young Apprentice of the Year! Healthcare Assistant Jessica Payne has just been awarded Great Yarmouth College‘s prestigious ‘Young Apprentice of the Year’ award. Seventeen year old Jessica started at the practice 11 months ago straight from school with no previous healthcare experience but with a positive attitude to lifelong learning and an enthusiasm for patient care.
Jess said “It was a real surprise to win the award. Lead Nurse Iain Swetman Jessica Payne (credit Keiron and Practice Manager Linda Marquis nominated me. I am really grateful for the Tovell Photography) opportunities that Mundesley Medical Centre and Great Yarmouth College have given me. I enjoy caring for patients and helping to improve their health”. Senior Partner Dr Angela Hallatt said “We are very proud of Jess and everything she has achieved. She has been quick to learn technical, clinical and professional consultation skills and is providing excellent care to an elderly and challenging population including patients with dementia and learning difficulties. She has become Group photo of Mundesley an invaluable member of our team Medical Centre nursing team and we are pleased to have been able to give Jess the opportunity to start a career in healthcare”.
Mundesley Medical Centre have embraced the apprenticeship scheme with nine young people completing apprenticeships in healthcare, administration or the dispensing of medicines during the last 9 years and are currently offering the opportunity for an apprentice receptionist to join the practice team. Anyone interested should contact the practice for more information.
Charity Fun Dog Show
Summer has finally arrived and with it, the very busy calendar of summer fetes that we are lucky enough to have in North Norfolk. This year Westover Vets are adding to the events diary and running our own Charity Fun Dog Show in aid of our chosen charity, Pets As Therapy (PAT). For those who are not aware of PAT, it is a community based charity providing therapeutic visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing and care homes, special needs schools and a variety of other establishments from volunteers with their pet dogs and cats. Today there are over 4,500 active PAT dogs and a smaller number of PAT cats working throughout the UK. Every week visiting PAT teams bring comfort and companionship to thousands of people, both young and old, by giving them the opportunity to stroke, hold and talk to one of these calm and friendly dogs and cats. It is a wonderful charity whose work cannot be overstated and who we are proud to support. Representatives from PAT will be attending the dog show if you are interested in joining the charity and there is plenty of information on their website as well www.petsastherapy.org
Our idea is to hold an event that can involve all breeds of dog, and dogs of all ages so that everyone can participate, hopefully have a good day and help raise money for a very worthy cause. The dog show is to be held from 11 am until 3pm on Sunday August 16th on the War Memorial Park in North Walsham. There will be rosettes awarded to the top six dogs in each class with prizes for the winners who will be entered into the Best in Show Class at the end of the day, to be co-judged by the Mayor of North Walsham! There will also be a free hog roast for all entrants and homemade cakes and other refreshments available too. Entries are available on the day and with six classes that run from Cutest Puppy and Scruffiest Mutt through to Top Veteran so there should be something for eveyone. For more information just contact the surgery or our Facebook page and we look forward to seeing you there and making our first charity dog show a big success.

Youngsters and aliens join for dramatic summer fun
Aliens are planning to spend their summer holiday in north Norfolk – thanks to local youngsters.
Children from eight to 15 years are invited to take part in a five-day summer theatre club leading to a stage performance of Help! There’s an Alien in My Shed!
The new play has been written by Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk, the charity based in North Walsham, and will be the third children’s summer production he has put on in the town.
The five-day drama project will run at the Atrium Theatre, North Walsham, from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 August.
and learn about acting skills, drama games, stage make-up and costume, scenery and backstage skills.
The show will be presented on stage at The Atrium Theatre on Saturday 29 August at 4pm with parents, friends and everyone else invited. Tickets will be £2.
Mr Ballard said “This will be a busy week of exploring acting and performance skills. Most importantly the children will learn to work as a team to produce a great show for all to see.”
The summer school will run from 10.30am - 4pm daily but extra hours for children will run between 9am and 5pm to help parents and carers.
Lydia Cyprus from North Walsham is doing a sponsored skydive on 29 August to raise money for two charities that she works with.
The first charity is the Benjamin Foundation, which started as a North Walsham based charity, now spreading wider across the entire county of Norfolk, with a new head office recently relocating to Norwich. The Benjamin Foundation help support many families with different issues, homelessness, childcare, support and advice. They strive towards hope, opportunities, stability and independence for all those they work with. The second is Children on The Edge. This charity is based in many different locations, Bangladesh,
Other summer activities coming up are: • A streetdance workshop for 10-14 year-olds, Tuesday 18 August, 10am-noon, £4. • A Sing It! Choral workshop for six-12 yearolds, Wednesday 19 August, 10am-noon, £4. • A Physical Theatre Workshop for 12-17 yearolds, Thursday 20 August, 10am-3pm, £13.
The five-day summer school costs £55 per child and places must be booked. All those taking part
For more information on shows, events or classes, pick up a brochure, pop into No. 1 Market Place (open Wed-Sat 9.30am-1.30pm) or check out www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.
Lebanon, Burma, Thailand and Uganda. The service in Uganda, is a very exciting and emotional centre. They provide a happy and safe environment for children across the region, providing early years education for children under five and educational support for children of primary school age. This Centre also provides nutritious meals, in order to reduce child malnutrition and improve health.
I have broken my target down into two parts –the first target was to reach £300, which I am now at. The second is to reach £600, so both charities are then receiving £300 each! I am hoping this is an easy achievable target.

Coastal Charity Walk
Louise Ellis
On behalf of Chamber of Trade in North Walsham, supporters walked from Happisburgh to Walcott to Happisburgh for these two wonderful causes
Routine Nail Care Hard Skin Removal Corns Orthotics
Foot Practitioner TCFCPa, RGN
The first ever walk for Action Medical Research, Saving Children's Lives and Dementia Awareness took place earlier this month.
Notwithstanding the sudden change in the weather, which probably deterred a few supporters, the event attracted a number of intrepid enthusiasts completing the walk in about two hours. The total raised cannot be assessed at the time of going to press, as cash raised from the sponsorship and raffles is still to be finalised.
Medals were presented to all those who completed the walk by Cllr Eric Seward, local County Councillor, who said "it was a magnificent effort for two worthy causes with walkers overcoming damp conditions with great enthusiasm"
Nick Lee, Chair of Chamber of Trade said, "I am pleased that people have turned up in the rain to support this great event. My thanks goes to Lady Jay for organising this walk."
Fund raising is continuing on action.org.uk/sponsor/jeanetteduggin
Please support these worthy causes as every pound counts. Raffle tickets are being sold for some wonderful prizes to be drawn in early September. Watch this space.

Ramblers launch national Big Pathwatch Scheme
Can you help provide information about your local footpaths?
The Ramblers have this month launched the Big Pathwatch scheme which allows members and non-members alike the chance to help provide a snapshot of footpaths across England and Wales.
Using an app or the web-site volunteers can pick a 1 km grid square and then report any problems with their local footpaths as well as highlighting wonderful things seen along the route. Many members from the ten Ramblers groups in Norfolk have already selected squares but there is much more to do to ensure that this survey comprehensively reports on the state of footpaths in the county. The information will be used both locally and nationally to ensure that footpaths remain accessible and open. Visit ww.ramblers.org.uk to sign-up in what is the biggest project looking at the state of the country's footpaths that has been undertaken.
