Issue 476 8th August 2015
Mothers’ Union
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
In July North Walsham Mothers' Union enjoyed their annual garden party at the home of Ann Herd.
During a week of wet and miserable weather, we were blessed with a dry and mostly sunny afternoon which added greatly to our enjoyment of a delicious bring and share tea. It was lovely to be able to spend time together chatting and catching up with all the news before our summer break in August. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8 September in St Nicholas Room at 2.30pm when we look forward to hearing about the Food Bank from our speaker Adrian Rudman. Visitors and new members are always welcome so do come along and meet us. For further details contact Ann on 01692 402707.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
Strawberry cream teas were on the menu together with our annual quiz when we opened the doors to the members at the Community Centre on Thursday 2 July.
The quiz consisted of 40 questions, some cryptic, some funny, but most general knowledge. After the quiz, members were served a lovely strawberry cream tea. This has now become an annual event, put together by two Committee members and presented well by our volunteer kitchen staff who work extremely hard at every meeting. Our meeting on 4 June turned out to be quite a special one. We were let down by the entertainer that was booked to appear but we had a last minute reprieve when ‘Anything Goes’ turned up and stole the show. Loved by all, they consisted of a five piece group that sang some songs that were old musical hall and pre-First World War. We also had some poetry read to us and some lovely piano and guitar solo. A big thank you to ‘Anything Goes’ for turning up at such short notice. The fundraising for June totalled £41-50, the July figures are not yet available. Our next meeting will be at the Community Centre on 3 September because the August meeting is a visit to Hadfields Garden Centre with afternoon tea and cakes.

Mundesley Medical Centre Celebrates Young Apprentice of the Year! Healthcare Assistant Jessica Payne has just been awarded Great Yarmouth College‘s prestigious ‘Young Apprentice of the Year’ award. Seventeen year old Jessica started at the practice 11 months ago straight from school with no previous healthcare experience but with a positive attitude to lifelong learning and an enthusiasm for patient care.
Jess said “It was a real surprise to win the award. Lead Nurse Iain Swetman Jessica Payne (credit Keiron and Practice Manager Linda Marquis nominated me. I am really grateful for the Tovell Photography) opportunities that Mundesley Medical Centre and Great Yarmouth College have given me. Exciting times here at the Grove! We are delighted to have been nominated for Restaurant of the Year in the Norfolk Food and Drink Awards (for the second year running), and head chef Michael West has also been nominated for Chef of the Year. It’s a great boost for us all and we are very grateful to our wonderful patrons who have been so kind as to nominate us. It’s a public ballot,
open until 14th August, so please do log on to www.norfolkfada.co.uk/ best-restaurant and cast your vote! We are of course very busy this time of year, and we have lots of families staying with us and enjoying the fabulous weather…(!) This recipe is always good for kids, as it’s a variation on an old classic but with a nice summery flavour. Please do pop in and see us for dinner, Sunday Lunch or afternoon tea – 01263512412 to book.

Grove nominated for double restaurant award
New installations and full service on all models
Cromer’s only two-Rosette eatery will be flying the flag for the town in the annual Norfolk Food and Drink Awards.
The Grove in Cromer has been nominated for the Restaurant of the Year category in the prestigious awards, which reach their climax with a gala dinner in September.
LPG & NATURAL GAS
5 Year Parts & Labour Manufacturers’ Warranty on all Boilers
Boiler Servicing
And the Grove’s head chef Michael West is also in the running for Norfolk Chef of the Year.
The Food and Drink Awards are the highest accolade in the country and reward restaurants that “create an unforgettable dining experience, cook to a degree of excellence using fresh, local produce combined with an unsurpassed level of customer service”. The Grove reached the shortlist in 2014 and will be looking to try to go one better this year.
Owner Richard Graveling is delighted to be in the running again. “To be honest we are pretty humbled to be nominated by several of our patrons” he said. “It has given the staff a great boost and we would like to think that Cromer will get behind us and see if we can make the shortlist again this year.”
Michael West said “I have a terrific team in the kitchen and this nomination is a compliment to all of them. We are lucky enough to have our own gardens that give us fantastic produce all year round, plus of course Icarus Hines in town and the most amazing seafood from John Davies. We are very proud of what we do here and I will be hoping to make the town proud too.”
The finalists are decided by public vote via the Norfolk Food and Drink Awards website, and voting closes on 14 August.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
The number of accolades we have had for our wonderful summer displays has been very heart warming. The weather has been just right for us gardeners and that together with a mild winter has done a lot for us.
We have removed the miniature fir trees from the tubs, as they were so large that they were taking all the water and goodness from the soil, and the other plants could not cope. These have been replaced with small – at the moment – cordylines which have settled in well and will give the tubs some height.
We have also used these as a centre line for the Church Yard Cross and that bed is looking really good with the pink geraniums.
The Grammar School Road beds are both in their prime, a vast improvement from just over a year ago. Both these beds are very high maintenance but are so worth the effort.
Some of us took part in the Fun Day parade with our official company transport – the wheelbarrow – and we all had a good time, even though it rained whilst we were getting the parade together, as well as soon after we arrived at the Park. However, it did not last long either time and the day was hailed a great success.
We are still very short of helpers being now only 13 in number. When you allow for holidays and some of us not being as fit as we once were, not to mention family commitments, we found that most days during this last planting we numbered five. Given we have 24 tubs, eight towers and six large flowerbeds to replant, we found the work very strenuous.
If you feel able to help please call Muriel on 01692 400717 or Marion on 01692 405211.

Prestigious Green Flag hoisted again at Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, and Pretty Corner
Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2015/16. It is the eleventh year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed. In 2005, Holt Country Park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands year-onyear improvement for the status to be retained. It’s been an exciting twelve months for the park with the addition of a new wildlife garden and the sighting of a Scarce Tortoiseshell butterfly. Until 2014 there has been only one sighting of the butterfly (also known as the Yellow Legged Tortoiseshell) in Britain. Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. A joint application was made this year for this first time by NNDC and the Woodland Trust. Woodland Trust manages the adjacent ‘Old Wood’, which is now included by the Green Flag award. The three sites are among a record-breaking 1582 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2015/2016. Becky Palmer, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces and I am delighted that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods have attracted national recognition once again. “The Green Flag Award highlights that our staff take great care in looking after our green areas for the ben-
efit of the many groups, visitors and residents who enjoy them throughout the year. Cllr. Palmer added “Not only do our award-winning green spaces offer peace and tranquillity, they are also wonderful places for children and their families to have fun while learning about our natural environment. Come and visit this summer, our countryside rangers have a full programme of activities for the whole family to enjoy!” The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
Cambridge Chemistry Challenge 2015
Paston Sixth Form College chemistry students once again took part in the Cambridge Challenge, a nationwide competition for the brightest chemistry students in the first year of their A levels.
Thirteen students entered the competition and in all gained four copper awards and one silver. The organisers state that gaining a certificate at all is a significant achievement. The questions are designed to develop ‘resilience’ and ‘the importance of keeping going with questions, even in the face of difficulty’. This is a quality which is highly desired by top Universities and which will stand Paston students in good stead on the demanding science university courses Paston students aim for. This year’s questions investigated the possibility of the existence of oxygen molecules with four oxygen atoms instead of the normal two and how complex biological molecules such as steroids could be built up by joining smaller molecules together.

The evening was organised by instructors Maria and Tracy, who also choreographed the show and provided all the brilliant costumes. Dance for Fun also participate in fetes and shows and attend public events and carnivals throughout the year.

‘Migration’ Exhibition at The Belfry
The Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand is pleased to offer the opportunity to see the quality and variety of work by Liz Waugh McManus, a unique collection by a talented artist.
Previously the work of Liz Waugh McManus was included in the three group contemporary glass exhibitions shown at The Belfry Arts Centre in 2010 (Contemporary Glass), 2011 (On the Brink) and 2012 (Snakes and Ladders) when the visitors comment book showed clearly that her work caught the imagination of the people viewing the exhibitions.
‘People were drawn to the combination of technique, imagination and animation and were captured by the memories of childhood dreams and fears fuelled by fairy stories and nursery rhymes. Her work has gained recognition since then, both nationally and internationally, having been included regularly in the British Glass Biennale and was selected for the Coburg Glass Prize in Germany’ writes Nora Gaston.
Suffolk. Walking through the generous space the works gradually took you over one by one drawing you into their layers of meaning. The work shown encompassed film, animation, image and glass in all cases contemplative, subtle and thoughtfully produced.
After training in art and design at Dartington College of Arts and Oxford Polytechnic, Liz did a PhD in anthropology of art at the Queen’s University of Belfast. She writes ‘my multifaceted practice has included sculpture, puppetry, theatre and animation. I discovered the medium of glass in 2002 and as a foundation for personal experimentation learnt glass skills from leading practitioners in the field, such as Clifford Rainey, Tessa Clegg and Irene Frolic, and had mentorships with Emma Woffenden and Angela Thwaites. My work has been shown nationally and internationally and has been included in British
Former mentor, Angela Thwaites, writes “Liz Waugh’s first solo show was a well-kept secret at The Cut, a former maltings turned into a spacious multi arts centre in Halesworth,

Glass Biennale and the Coburg Glass Prize exhibitions. I am member of the Contemporary Glass Society. I aim for a sense of living presence in my work and to engage with the viewer through narrative or playfulness. Combining glass with video projection enhances the possibilities to do this. The artwork is an exploration of snippets of stories found in all sorts of places – books, newspapers, toys, archival film footage, photographs which I inherited. The work in this exhibition all refers to a journey of some sort, whether through geographical or imagined places or through time.

Good Neighbours
Most people could do with a little help at some time or other, and the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme gives local people the chance to give and receive help in many small but important ways.
The Scheme is independent of statutory authorities and has been set up with the support of Community Action Norfolk. Good Neighbour Schemes have been going for more than 25 years and nearly 15 Schemes have been set up in Norfolk so far.
North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme will be launched on 1 September.
It will be run and operated by vetted, insured and trained local volunteers who will, in essence, help their neighbours living in
North Walsham.
The Scheme is not intended to be a replacement for emergency or social services, or local businesses. It’s just about local people helping other local people by offering short term or one off practical help to anyone in North Walsham who requests assistance.
Requests might include: • Occasional dog walking • Garden clearance • Practical tasks around the house like taking down curtains, or tuning the TV • Giving lifts (for which a charge is made) • Filling in forms or letter writing • Keeping someone company
There is no charge for assistance except travel,
parking and material expenses.
Anyone who needs help or would like to be a volunteer should phone this number:

Jacobs donate to About With Friends Jacobs, the engineering consultancy carrying out the Bacton Rejuvenation Project at Bacton Gas Terminal, have donated almost £500 worth of soft play equipment for the use of younger members of About With Friends.
The money was raised through a football score prediction game organised by Malcolm Lown and Mike Donovan. Workers on the BRP pay a weekly fee in a game known as The Footie Thing and at the end of the season the money is given to a charity chosen by the organisers. Jacobs have worked with About With Friends in the past and this year wanted to buy something specific for the younger members who attend school holiday schemes and the Friday night Youth Club. The charity needed some soft play equipment and this was duly provided by Jacobs.
equipment they need to build their services.
About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships, engage in fun and active social activities, get involved in the community, have the chance to try new experiences and learn new skills both for life and work, but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.
For further information about any of our services including Ignite, the alternate Fridays youth club for 9-12 year olds, call 01263 515230.
The equipment is a selection of high quality, ultra-safe building blocks in various shapes which the youngsters – who all have a learning disability – can use to create a world of their own. Malcolm and Mike dropped by the About With Friends Base last month to hand over the equipment which was quickly pounced upon by members at a summer holiday activity.
About With Friends are also grateful for the donations of companies and individuals who help them acquire the specialist, and often expensive,

People may wonder why we feel so strongly about neutering cats. However, a glance in our pens at present should help them to appreciate why. At present we have 37 kittens in care (thankfully a further four were re-homed this week), most of which are recent arrivals. Two of these litters have come in with their mothers from outside situations, with no reports of missing cats in the areas concerned. We have also taken in seven litters of kittens from people who had not appreciated how difficult it would be to find new homes for them, or who had taken on pregnant cats which were no longer wanted by their owners. Another three kittens came into care and needed hand rearing, as their mother was sadly killed on the road when they were a few days old. A further litter of three kittens was left in a cardboard box on the doorstep of one of our fosterers while she was out. As this is the fourth time this has happened to her, she has real concerns that this might happen while she is on holiday. Four kittens were also rescued from a feral colony where we are paying for the adults to be neutered. Sadly, one of these was born with only three legs. However, from our experience last year, we know it will learn to live with its disability. As well as the arrival of all these kittens, we must also include 3 five month old little females found dumped in a box which was only 15" by 11" by 10", with hardly any room for them to breathe, let alone move. As they were all ‘calling’, a visit to the vets was top priority once they settled in their pen. We have also taken in another stray that was living close to one of our volunteer’s home and creating havoc in the area by fighting, again because he had not been neutered. Although not old, he is not a young cat and, due to the fighting, he had badly damaged an eye, which sadly could not be saved and had to be removed.
These kittens and cats are just the most recent arrivals that have joined us, either because their mothers were not neutered or they had also not been

Holt Festival Art Prize winner announced by international artist
The winner of the fourth Holt Festival Art Prize was announced last month by one of the region’s best known artists.
the UK before choosing the winner from that list.
International Art Appraiser James Glennie who curates exhibitions for the Holt Festival and has organised the competition since it began in 2012 commented ‘the almost unbelievably high standard of entries really does seem to get better and better each year. It’s always such a thrill to see the art that people submit’
Brüer Tidman’s acrylic on canvas portrait of his partner Beth Narborough was unanimously declared the winner by artist Colin Self on behalf of the judges.
The announcement of the prizewinner was made at what has become the traditional opening event of north Norfolk’s annual arts feast, just before the Festival’s first concert which this year saw a packed and enthusiastic audience for The Puppini Sisters.
Norwich born Brüer now lives in Gorleston and has a studio in Great Yarmouth. He attended Great Yarmouth Art College from 1957 – 1961 before moving up to the Royal College of Art from 1961- 1964. He has painted many pictures of Beth, who has suffered from MS since the age of 17 and in 1996 staged
The 2015 judging panel was Amanda Geitner, Chief Curator at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, London art adviser Nic Tyler alongside Norfolk based, internationally renowned ‘pop’ artist Colin Self.
an exhibition at Norwich’s King of Hearts gallery that was made up exclusively of portraits of her.
‘This exhibition of shortlisted works is a very good show’ he commented ‘and even after all these years as a professional artist it’s a real thrill to win this award – especially from such a distinguished panel of judges and in the face of such serious competition. I have to say I have known Colin Self all his life - we grew up in the same part of Norwich. I completed this painting in 1996 and he has actually asked to buy it off me several times!’
Brüer Tidman work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in London, Zurich, Valkenswaard and Amsterdam in Holland, and Finland amongst others. He wins a prize of £1,500 and the painting will also be exhibited at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in the Autumn.

Happisburgh Sea Defence Work Work started at the end of last month to re-align the sea defences on Happisburgh beach.
The work on the rock armour at Happisburgh will involve moving approximately 9,000t of rock from their current position back closer to the cliffs. It needs to be carried out before the autumn so the sea defences are able to better protect the coastline. The contractor, Renosteel, will be carrying out the work using 360 Caterpillar track diggers and it will be overseen by St La Haye.
The work is expected to take twelve weeks. The contractor will be working when the tide is out. As well as moving the rock armour, they will be removing beach debris including old sea defences, rubble and concrete, taking out timber and steel sheet piles and making the beach safer and cleaner.

Due to the archaeological significance of the site, Chris Birks, a consultant archaeologist, will oversee the work. Nick Ashton from the British Museum will also be involved in case there is an opportunity to identify other items of historical interest. In May 2013 the beach revealed the earliest human footprints outside Africa. Prior to this, Happisburgh finds included hand-axes indicating that the area had been home to the earliest human occupation in northern Europe for at least one million years.
The rock armour at Happisburgh was put in following the failure of the sea defences and works by dissipating the energy from the sea to slow down erosion.
The work is needed because the cliff has receded to such a point that the rock armour needs to be moved back closer to the cliffs in order to be more effective and not lost to the sea. It is estimated that the work
will cost between £60,000 and £75,000 depending on the debris that needs to be cleared.
Cllr. Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Coast and Countryside said “This work is essential and it needs to be undertaken when the beach level and weather conditions are good. I know the community has been waiting for the work to hsppen and now the agreement has come through from the Marine Management Organisation, although it is unfortunate that it’ll take place during the peak holiday season, I am pleased we are able to start straight away.”
During the work the car park, new play area and beach access ramp will remain open and people will be able to walk along the long sandy stretch of Happisburgh beach to the east (right of the beach ramp). Due to the nature of the essential maintenance operation it will mean the beach, west of the beach access ramp up to the edge of the caravan park will be closed during the works.

Revised date for RNLI Cromer Lifeboat Day
As you will appreciate, due to the awful weather on Saturday 25 July and the predicted conditions on Lifeboat day itself, we had to postpone the event.
We have decided to hold the event on Sunday 9 August. The day will be almost the same with stalls, live demonstrations etc BUT unfortunately the Sheringham Shantymen, have a prior engagement.
To make a change we will be having Rig-a-Jig-Jig performing inside the boathouse rather than on the Pier forecourt. They will be giving demonstrations of Norfolk Step Dancing and are very ably led by Fiona Davies, who is the sister of our Coxswain, John Davies.

The Care Act Written by Miranda Marshall Unit 11, Cornish Way North Walsham, NR28 0AW
– Director at Hayes + Storr
The Care Act came into effect on 1st April 2015. It is a major and important reform and will affect anyone living in England who has care needs now and in the future.
The ‘Wellbeing Principle’ is a new and important concept. It covers a wide range of factors including: personal dignity; physical, mental and emotional wellbeing; protection from abuse and neglect; accommodation; family, domestic and personal wellbeing. There is an attempt to recognise that different people have different needs rather than just considering which Local Authority (“LA”) service they will fit into. There is a move away from only providing residential (i.e. care home) and domiciliary (i.e. at home) care. There are a wide range of assessment methods now available.
The important changes that you should know about are:
• The legal right to a Care Assessment. The LA must provide this to anyone who appears to need care or support. This is regardless of their finances and even if they are paying for their own care. If someone is eligible for support,

Norfolk Golf Day Raises £5,000 for Youth Project
Louise Ellis Foot Practitioner TCFCPa, RGN
A charity golf day has teed up thousands of pounds for a much in-demand youth project in north Norfolk.
Routine Nail Care Hard Skin Removal Corns Orthotics
Up to 140 players competed in the annual fundraiser organised by Kevin Abbs, of North Norfolk Rotary Club.
Home Visits 07710 435123
A total of 35 teams paid to play a round at the outstanding Royal Cromer Golf Club, as well as enjoying a dinner and raffle afterwards. A magnificent £5,000 was raised on the day, all in aid of the Holt Youth Project.
Jonathan Moore, General Manager of Royal Cromer Golf Club; Kevin Abbs, member of the North Norfolk Rotary Club and Director at Crayford and Abbs Nissan; Mark Heveran, Head Greenkeeper at Royal Cromer Golf Club; and Ben Palmer, Director of Finance at Anglian Radio, which owns North Norfolk Radio

Mr Abbs said “I’m quite active in the local community and love to do my bit to help out charities and projects.
“I’m particularly passionate about The Holt Youth Project and the amazing work it does with local children in the immediate area. Julie Alford, who founded the project, is a fantastic local personality who has helped transform the lives of scores of youngsters. The more we can do for her, and her organisation, the better.”
