Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

NORTH WALSHAM HERITAGE GROUP North Walsham is making history by holding its first ever Heritage Open Days event on 10/11/12 September 9.30am to 4pm at No.1, Arts North Norfolk, Market Place, North Walsham, NORFOLK, NR28 9BP. Entry is free.

Piggy-backing on the national initiative, which is celebrating its 21st year in 2015, North Walsham is holding its first ever Heritage Open Days this September.

‘Heritage Open Days’ is England’s largest and most popular voluntary event, celebrating our local history, architecture and culture by offering free access to events and properties that are usually closed to the public or charge admission. In 2014 Heritage Open Days in Norwich and Norfolk contributed £500,000 to the local economy and raised the profile of the local area amongst residents and tourists about the fantastic heritage on offer.

With a burgeoning archive of artefacts and photographs, but without an actual Heritage Centre at present, the newly formed North Walsham Heritage Group has embraced the concept as a means of showcasing the rich history of North Walsham to residents and tourists alike.

Events include a historical treasure trail for the kids, ‘guess the mystery object’, a photographic display of bygone North Walsham and a chance to soak someone in some medieval stocks! There will also be a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Nicholas Groves talk about the history of The Cedars (currently the town’s council offices) which was previously owned by generations of his family.

In addition, WISE Archive member, Olwen Gotts, will be on hand on Thursday 10 September to record people’s memories of old North Walsham and District. WISE Archive is a Norfolk based oral history charity that records working life stories of older people. There are prizes to be won for kids and adults alike. There are also separate Heritage Open Day events at St Nicholas Church and the Congregational Church. Further expansion for North Norfolk Law Firm

Clapham & Collinge, a long established, leading firm of solicitors has expanded their North Norfolk presence with the opening of a significantly larger office in Sheringham. The office move coincides with Clapham & Collinge’s 60th Anniversary and follows their recent departure from the national legal network QualitySolicitors.

Going from strength to strength, the firm is continually expanding their workforce and currently employs a total of 58 people across both branches. Mark Kermez, Litigation Partner at the firm, was delighted to announce the opening of the new office and stated “It is a great moment for Clapham & Collinge to relocate its North Norfolk presence to a significantly larger new office. The new premises, at the very heart of

Friends and neighbours of Mrs Ruth Bird of Southrepps, flocked to her home earlier this month to support the Cromer based charity About With Friends. One of her friends has a grandson with a learning disability who attends the charity every day and Mrs Bird wanted to raise some money for them. This is the third year that she has opened up her house and garden to the public. A beautiful array of treats were on sale including homemade Scotch Pancakes with cream and jam and cakes of various types. There was also a tombola, a raffle, and a Guess the Weight Of The Cake competition as well as a more local-flavoured Name The Crabs contest.

Fine weather helped make the afternoon a success and £180.50 was raised for the charity. About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full. In conjunction with the move the firm’s managing partner Tammy Parnell and the highly regarded Head of Conveyancing Rosemary Farman have also relocated to the Sheringham office, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to their North Norfolk practice.

Ben Lowe, Tammy Parnell, Hugh Berridge, Lin Whitehead, Mark Kermez

Sheringham, provide the firm with the base from which to continue with their ambitious expansion plans and we look forward to many more years of providing the very best of legal services to the local market”.

'Walsham Where the Liberty Bells Still Ring'

Richard Harbord’s new book 'Walsham Where the Liberty Bells Still Ring' is an exploration of North Walsham’s early history.

Richard explains a bit about his book ‘North Walsham is by far the biggest town in north-east Norfolk yet it is not its administrative centre but there is much evidence to show that it once was. The book sets out to enquire why this happened way back in its history. It is surrounded by splendid countryside and much fertile agricultural land. That meant it attracted the attention of land magnates and they gave it to one of Norfolk's most famous abbeys, St Benets, near Ludham. The book includes an image of what the abbey's splendid gateway once looked like before it became a ruin. The abbey became increasingly at odds with the local population. This estrangement and the gathering Reformation culminated in the great Battle of Walsham against feudalism in 1381 during the Peasants Revolt. Its history has been a troubled one and there were further upsets. In 1600 there was a fire that swept through the thatched roofs of the town making most of its population homeless for months on end - where did they go for shelter in the meantime? Eventually the town was rebuilt in brick and was a much more robust material. Several of the buildings survive from that time including the excellent Paston College. The story of Walsham is one of triumphing over adversity to create the pleasant town we know today. One calamity that has not been redressed is the collapse of the church tower. The book includes a rare picture of it before the tower fell down. At least the church bells still ring out from within the ruined tower. That is a symbol of the urge to true liberty which is found in grace. All this is should be of great interest and I don't believe anyone has before attempted a book on Walsham's early history. But the book tries to be more than that because the town faces new challenges in the future especially on the planning front. Hopefully the book provides a better basis for making decisions on Walsham's future’.

'Walsham where the liberty bells still ring' is available in Showcase Gallery in North Walsham priced at £17. It is a fairly limited edition of just 100 copies.

Your Vote Matters - Local residents to receive important voter registration information

Households in North Norfolk will soon be receiving a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of North Norfolk District Council’s annual household enquiry canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

With the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place across the country in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the election takes place they will easily be able to take part. Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer at North Norfolk District Council said “Anyone that wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, be sure to respond to the form straight away.

“We have invested in new automated services to

make this easier than ever; you can make changes online at www.registerbyinternet.com/north-norfolk or confirm details are correct by Freephone to 0800 197 9871. You can even now confirm details via text message. Full details on how to do this can be found on the front of your form.”

“If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this online or by post.”

It is particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered. Research by the Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. Be mindful that just because you have registered for Council Tax at a new address, this does not automatically update the electoral register.

Kay Jenkins, Head of English regions at the Electoral Commission said “The annual canvass is an opportunity for people to easily check whether they’re registered. It’s essential for a healthy democracy that everyone who is entitled to vote is able to, and for those who need to registering is now easier than ever with the online system of registration.”

“If you have changed address in the last year, it’s particularly likely that you will need to register at your new address, so check the form as soon as it arrives.”

Scouts is about fun, challenges and adventure

We are the UK's biggest mixed youth organisation. We change lives by offering 6- to 25-year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

Scouts helps children and young adults reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people to get jobs, save lives and even change the world.

Adventure is at the heart of everything we do. It is the single most important thing that sets Scouts apart.

Through the everyday adventure of Scouting, young people and adult volunteers regularly experience new challenges that enrich their lives.

From camping and hiking to surfing and paragliding, there are hundreds of activities that Scouting offers. Join in and see for yourself.

How do I enrol my child? We offer everyday adventure and activity to hundreds of thousands of young people across the UK.

There are fun and exciting activities and opportunities in each of the five sections: • Beavers (ages 6–8) • Cubs (ages 8-10½) • Scouts (ages 10½–14) • Explorer Scouts (ages 14–18)

Autumn at the Museum of the Broads Why not enjoy late summer at the Museum of the Broads?

September is always a great month at our Museum as we take part in the Heritage Open Days on 12 and 13 September when you can visit us for FREE. This year we also have two Artists in Residence. Adrian Simpson will be producing a collaborative work on Saturday 12 September, so come along and put your mark on this masterpiece! Then on Sunday 13 September, Su Chisnell will be exhibiting her paintings. Both are local artists and both look forward to meeting our visitors. And our Victorian steam boat, ‘Falcon’, will be operating for a small charge too.

Find out why our historic location is important to the Broads - one of our buildings even has Wherry masts as part of its structure! It is a great chance to linger and discover everything from local wildlife, gun punts, holiday souvenirs, to how the Broads were formed. Did you know that Coltishall was at the centre of Broadland’s Industrial Revolution? Discover more in our special Broadland’s Breweries, Past and Present Exhibition. For families, our popular Halloween Trail with loads of spooky activities takes place during the October half term.

The Museum is open daily to the end of October, 10am to 4pm. Please see our website for full details: www.museumofthebroads.org.uk, or phone 01692 581681.

Come and See a Record Breaking Doodle attempt

During the summer holidays children across North Norfolk have been asked to doodle a picture on a standard sized sticky-note. It was all part of a challenge linked to this year’s Summer Reading Initiative, an annual event run though the local library service in conjunction with the Reading Agency, which this year was based around the Guinness World Records. Local illustrator Adam Faulconbridge ran eight free workshops, in all North Norfolk libraries, to help inspire the children to get creative over the course of their summer holidays. Their hundreds of doodles were both imaginative and witty, demonstrating artistic flair and a great deal of perception. A lot of fun was had by all, small, and big children alike and Adam, the organisers, and the local Library service would like to thank everyone that took part; as well as the owners of Cromer Pier for all their support and the generous use of the pier. These workshops were sponsored by FALCON (www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk) which aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms. The doodles will now be brought together and attached to a piece of bunting. Hopefully, in doing so, they hope to create an unofficial record for the longest ever doodle in North Norfolk. They will be

Finally, just remember to join the stars of the Cromer Pier Show who will be unrolling the doodle masterpiece before they get ready for their 4pm matinee.

BANK HOLIDAY BONANZA at St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market Saturday 29 – Monday 31 August

Whatever else you do over the Bank Holiday weekend, make sure not to miss an exciting new exhibition and sale of work at St Margaret’s church, Thorpe Market, situated in a beautiful and tranquil setting, featuring three local artists. As always, a wide selection of used books will be for sale, costing 50p and £1 respectively for soft and hard backs, as well as refreshments in the form of teas, coffees and cakes. Entrance is free, the artists will be on hand throughout the exhibition and there is ample parking opposite the church.

ROSALIE OSBORNE GIBB - following two very successful exhibitions at St Margaret’s in May and June of this year, Rosalie will once again be exhibiting an exciting new collection of artwork in various mediums, as well as photographs, mounted art prints and greeting cards depicting her paintings and photos.

Whilst Rosalie’s art covers many diverse subjects, the Norfolk coast and countryside remain firm favourites. Rosalie’s paintings have been displayed at exhibitions elsewhere and in the Beach Hut Gallery in Cromer.

THE CAT POTTERY - Winstanley cats have been made for the past 40 years, by Jenny Winstanley, assisted by her son Nick Allen and colleague Kim, both of whom have worked for the business for the past 30 years. All the animals, including the glass eyes, are handmade and hand painted, each one therefore being unique, making them highly collectable, in a range of sizes from the tiniest to life size. Although called the Cat Pottery, a complete menagerie is now produced, including hares, dogs, foxes, meerkats, badgers, lions, tigers, teddies, penguins and even the odd elephant. The Cat Pottery enjoys a worldwide reputation

with their animals scattered across the globe from America to Russia.

GAYNOR HOULTON - working from The Beach Hut studio and gallery in Cromer, Gaynor designs and makes a wide range of adorable and unique coast and country-themed homes and interiors fabric creations. Having had an internet business for the last six years, doorstopsandgifts.co.uk, as well as supplying Coast and Country Interiors in Bude and items for Country Living magazine’s Spring and Autumn Fairs, Gaynor has also exhibited at major craft fairs. Gaynor’s exciting and diverse range of goodies includes pinboards, a wide range of doorstops, appliqued cushions, bunting, bags, aprons and even the odd crab, all of which can be made to your own requirements.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Annual Fete and Lifeboat Day

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers worked hard to get ready for their annual Fete and Lifeboat Day and, bearing in mind the bad weather in the run up to the event, there was great excitement when the day arrived with sunshine and clear skies.

The day started at 12noon when the Fete opened. Hundreds of people arrived to enjoy the stalls, hog roast, games and, of course, to see the lifeboats and meet the wonderful, professionally trained volunteers. Just before 3pm the crew’s pagers went off and the crew leaped into

action. The Douglas Paley was soon in the water heading for Sea Palling to reports of a missing child, last seen in the water. The Spirit of Berkhamsted was put on standby in case it was required. Soon after Douglas Paley went out of sight of the crowds, they were stood down as the child had been accounted for.

Then both Happisburgh lifeboats together with RNLI lifeguards put on a display, which showed the crowd how the lifeguards recover a casualty from the sea. The lifeboats showed how they transfer people and equipment between both boats before they all returned to the beach.

The day was very well attended and organisers would like to thank all our volunteers and supporters for all their hard work before and on the day.

The day has raised approximately £6,000 for the RNLI to carry out its work of saving lives at sea.

Fun, Fundraising and Fayres Mundesley and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Women’s Section (RBLWS) would like to thank everyone who supported us at the Mundesley Church Fete where our tombola raised £480. Over the past four years together, we have raised in excess of £18,500 for the RBLWS Benevolent Fund. The fund awards educational sponsorships and annuities, family breaks and direct grants for those who need them – and you do not have to be ex-service personnel to benefit.

Our branch is thriving, with over 100 members of all ages. It serves the area covering Mundesley, Gimingham, Knapton, Trunch and Paston, although we also have members from Southrepps and North Walsham too. Fundraising is only

part of the work we do; we work hard at having fun! So as well as meeting once a month to discuss branch business (and have a social natter over a cup of tea), there are informative and practical presentations and every now and then we venture forth on a group outing.

Our most recent was aboard the Mississippi paddle steamer where we travelled from Horning to South Walsham along the Broads. Yes, it was a rather wet chilly July afternoon, but the music, laughter and camaraderie made the whole experience quite memorable. Some of our party enjoyed the warmth of the cabin being entertained by a fine Dixieland jazz band. Others preferred watching the world (riverbank cottages and other boats) go by and waving at the inhabitants.

So if you would like to join us, come to our next branch meeting on Wednesday 16 September at 1.45pm in Coronation Hall, Cromer Rd., Mundesley where there will be a talk about Snetterton Dogs’ Trust and a real pooch or two to cuddle. Or if you would like to help fundraise at our fabulous Christmas Fayre, Tea Parties (our cakes are famous) jumble sales or stalls at local events please contact our Secretary, Denise Tarry via Facebook or on 01263 722163. We would love to see you - a lift may be possible if transport is a problem.

Mardling and Music at Thorpe Market

Two of the area’s best-known entertainers are joining forces to present one of their popular Mardling and Music Evenings at Thorpe Market Church on Saturday, September 12 at 7.30pm.

Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper shares the platform with Ian Prettyman, a former teacher still busy on the Lowestoft and district scene as local Methodist preacher, choral enthusiast and muchadmired exponent of traditional East Anglian fishing and farming songs.

“We relish a bit of NorfolkSuffolk rivalry but find complete harmony on occasions such as this” says Keith. The pair have performed together countless times on Press Gang rounds of local theatres, village halls and other community meeting places and in productions of All Preachers Great and Small in local churches. They continue in harness for Mardling and Music Evenings across the region.

Keith will share favourite yarns from Church and Chapel at the Thorpe Market show as well as a Bible reading in his beloved Norfolk dialect. Ian provides the musical items - including a rousing

medley on his trusty melodeon.

There are firm promises of “plenty of hearty laughs and chances to join In the uplifting musical fun.”

Tickets are £10, including refreshments, from 01263 822384 and info@thorpemarket.org.uk

Sainsbury’s North Walsham launches partnership with National Coastwatch Mundesley

Sainsbury’s North Walsham have launched their partnership with their new Local Charity of the Year, National Coastwatch Mundesley.

National Coastwatch Mundesley was chosen by Sainsbury’s customers at the beginning of July and the charity will now receive a year’s worth of support through fundraising and awareness from the store.

Representatives from the charity joined Sainsbury’s colleagues to kickstart the fundraising with a Tombola raising £250, a bag pack raising £594 and an

16

awareness/ collection/ recruitment day when Sainsbury’s generous customers gave £356. This brought the total for the whole weekend to a terrific £1200 for the store’s charity.

Bob White, Station Master at National Coastwatch Mundesley, said “Sainsbury’s Local Charity of the Year scheme has made a real difference to many charities over the last few years and we’re delighted to have been selected. We’re really looking forward to getting started and raising awareness of our cause as well as raising vital funds to continue our work in the community.”

Neil Grainger, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s North Walsham, added “We are really looking forward to working with National Coastwatch Mundesley over the next year and the team have some great ideas for fundraising. We hope our support will make a real difference to the charity, and customer enjoy the variety of activities we are planning.” The Local Charity scheme is now in its seventh year and has raised over £7 million to support local charities since 2009.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

Over the years, we have often been invited to arrange wedding flowers, but recently we worked on a particularly special wedding in Bradfield Church for Emma Alston, the great-grandaughter of Mrs Muriel Alston who founded The Bradfield Flower Club in 1958.

Eight members of the club worked together over two and a half days to complete the large floral displays of beautiful white and cream summer flowers for the wedding in St Giles Church on 18 July.

In the same week, several members took part in the Methodist Church Flower Festival whilst others were working in Norwich Cathedral for Founders Day.

Club Members enjoyed a day trip to The Cambridge Botanical Gardens in July and looking forward to the August Garden/Cream Tea Meeting at Colby.

Meanwhile preparations are well under way for the 10th Flower Festival ‘All Our Yesterdays’ at St Nicholas Church in Potter Heigham over the Bank Holiday weekend, on 29-31 August. G Dillon

The Sapling children from Millfield Pre-School held their Pre Prom on Friday 17 July. The children were all looking very smart for the occasion and thanks to all the hard work from the staff, the children gave amazing performances, watched on by lots of very proud mums, dads and family members. Certainly a few tears were shed.

There was a very special guest who visited the Prom - the Mayor came along to present the school with a cheque from the Farmers Market. These funds will be put towards the pre-school’s new building project. There was a presentation to all the children after the performance and then the ice cream bar was opened. It was a beautiful day and everybody enjoyed ice creams and refreshments outside.

It was a wonderful way for the children to end their time at Pre School and start their new journey to school.

North Norfolk's Got Talent

Hot on the tails of the completion of the national television programme, North Norfolk has its own opportunity for local acts to show their talents and the chance to hit the big time!

Starting in September, heats will be running across North Norfolk, from Holt to Mundlesley, and from North Walsham to Sheringham, with the Grand Final of North Norfolk's Got Talent (#NNGT) in Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre at the end of October.

The talent competition is open to all from song and dance acts, to magic and comedy. "We want to give artistes from across North Norfolk the chance to show what they can achieve," said Annie Lloyd who is organising the competition, "We know how much talent there is in North Norfolk and we want to give people the chance to show what they can do".

"We are hugely fortunate to have this event supported by legendary producer, musical director and Ivor Novello award-winner David Mackay, and Anna Mudeka Southburgh Festival of World Music organiser and musician," Annie continued. As well as being a judge at the final, David Mackay will introduce the winner to his contacts in the industry as well as take the winner behind the scenes at the production of his major musical production of 'The Elvis Years' which comes to The Pier Pavilion Theatre on the evening after the #NNGT final - truly a Money Can't Buy Prize.

Planning for the competition is well advanced, and will step up a gear over the coming weeks. If you would like to take part in the competition or you can think of someone who you feel deserves to be, full detail are on the website nngt.uk. You can also find contact details there if you would like to help as a volunteer or sponsor all or part of the competition.

#NNGT is being organised by the Coast Arts Festival in conjunction with Arts North Norfolk, Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre and Art is Medicine.

A London-themed Major One-Man Exhibition by Trevor Woods at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea. Saturday 22 August - Saturday 5 September

An engaging colour field of London paintings.

This exhibition by local contemporary artist Trevor Woods explores graphic, abstract shape and colour around London above and below ground.

These paintings have allowed Trevor to push his style further in terms of creativity, but still hold onto his core principles regarding the way he paints and chooses subjects.

Along with the central theme there will Mind the Gap also be a selection of paintings of familiar London landmarks, plus one or two surprises. As part of the exhibition there will be a series of 10 paintings that won’t be revealed until the opening day‌ so you’ll just have to come to the exhibition to see more!

Featuring over 50 brand new paintings, this is going to be an explosion of colour!

Of his paintings, Trevor says “My work has always been Air Line strong and graphic in style, featuring instantly recognisable scenes without the everyday clutter, which encourages the observer to look at everyday views in a new light. My style is always developing, and this year it’s become slightly more abstract, featuring flat areas of colour, broken up with rich painted texture and lines, but you can still see what is being depicted, and you can still see it’s distinctly my work; I believe that’s something that my followers and collectors really appreciate.

UNDERGROUND | OVERGROUND opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 22nd August from 10am6pm, when Trevor will be present to welcome you with a glass of Prosecco, and continues until Saturday 5th September. Open Monday - Saturday, 10am-5pm, plus Sundays 23rd and 30th August 11am-4pm.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

Sometimes tragedy can lead to achievement, eventually benefitting the lives of many. This was reflected in Tony Ing’s presentation to North Walsham Probus Club last monthWednesday on The Benjamin Foundation. The Benjamin Foundation was founded in 1994 by Richard and Vanessa Draper in memory of their son, Benjamin, who died in a motorcycle accident at the age of 17. Tony Ing took over as Chief Executive of The Benjamin Foundation in June this year after Richard Draper’s retirement.

those who are very young and may have recently left the care system. With Heart & Home, young people are provided with a room in a private home, and have the support of the host family, couple or individual. Young people are often helped into education or work, eventually being equipped to live independently.

The Benjamin Foundation’s Kidzone club in North Walsham offers high quality care and an after school club for children aged 3 - 13 years in a safe and friendly environment. The charity is hugely proud that Kidzone was awarded a ‘good’ Ofsted report earlier this year.

The original aim of The Benjamin Foundation was to provide a youth service for younger children encountering problems at school and at home, the object being to give hope, opportunity, stability and eventual independence.

Copperfield School, in Great Yarmouth, was founded by The Benjamin Foundation to offer a supportive education setting for children struggling with mainstream education. With a 98% attendance rate it has seen wonderful results with children who were previously not engaged in education.

Encouraged by their success The Benjamin Foundation then acquired the former telephone exchange in Mundesley Road, North Walsham and developed a supported accommodation scheme for young homeless people, aged between 16 and 25. A further supported accommodation project was started in Fakenham and named Steven Newing House. Over the last 21 years similar projects followed at Great Yarmouth, Thetford, Kings Lynn and Aylsham.

Most recently in May 2015, The Benjamin Foundation launched Ben’s Workforce, which is a service for people in North Norfolk aged over 65 who need someone to do small maintenance and repair jobs around the home. The jobs are carried out by the team of staff and volunteers all of whom are trained and approved.

Another innovation introduced by The Benjamin Foundation is the Heart & Home supported lodgings scheme. The charity understands that a hostel environment might not suit all homeless young people, particularly

The Benjamin Foundation also runs a number of social enterprises: a shop selling children’s

clothing and equipment in North Walsham and three stores selling pre-loved furniture and white goods in Holt, Dereham and Norwich. All of the profits from the shops are invested back into the charity.

From a small start, The Benjamin Foundation now delivers more than 30 projects and services across Norfolk all driven by the needs of children, young people and families. At the heart of the charity is the desire to help people achieve hope, opportunity, stability and independence.

The Club meets the fourth Wednesday of every month, except December at 10am in the Community Centre. It meets to provide an informal meeting and a chosen speaker for retired and semi retired business and professional men. Please join us at the next meeting on the 26 August. Dear Margaret,

Trunch Open Gardens & Scarecrow Event May I through your publication thank everyone who came to our Trunch Open Gardens and Scarecrow Day on Sunday 19 July.

We had a fantastic turnout of people and the sun certainly shone on us. We still have some monies to come in but we know we have raised in excess of £3200.00 to go towards Trunch Village Funds. The winners of the scarecrow competition made a scarecrow based on Frozen and they received a voucher for £20 for their efforts. A big congratulations and thank you to everyone who made a scarecrow, opened their gardens or held an event on The Paddock.

A big thank you must also go to everyone who helped both before and on the day to make it such a success. Note for diary , next year’s event will be held on Sunday 17 July and we hope to see you all there.

Many thanks, Lyn Bothway on behalf of Trunch Open Gardens Committee

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the phone line has still not been repaired, the temporary solution seems to be working so, hopefully no more problems.

I had intended to move on from the subject of neutering this time but a recent phone call brings up another challenge we face quite often with regard to feral/stray cats. Last year after several visits to a car park in Aylsham, we managed to trap an un-neutered female and her kittens. As the mother cat was young, we had intended to socialise her and find her a new home. Unfortunately she was very unhappy being confined in a pen and took no interest whatsoever in her five week old kittens so the best course of action was to get her neutered. We were able to find someone who was prepared to offer her some shelter and to take responsibility for her once she was returned and, although still wary of people, she is happy with the life she now leads. However, unbeknown to us someone living close to the car park had

An eventful summer

We've had an eventful summer so far in terms of the number of emergencies and unusual cases we have seen. These have included doing dental work on ferrets and one particularly painful hedgehog, a penis amputation in a gecko (don't worry they have a spare!) and a couple of spleen removals among a variety of other cases. Probably the most common recurring theme this month has been grass seed related problems. As many of you are well aware grass seeds have a habit of making their way into our pets fur, and by virtue of the their arrow head shape and barbs they can penetrate the skin and migrate around the body. This leads to plenty of dogs with seeds in their ears and often their feet where they lead to infection and abscesses. Far less commonly these seeds can enter body cavities or airways, but in July alone we have removed four such seeds from our patient's airways.

One patient, a young Golden Retriever named Bracken (pictured) is a voracious scent sniffer and managed to inhale a grass seed up each nostril! These are notoriously difficult to find due to the complex nature of the airways and their small size, but fortunately both were removed in their entirety, one almost 6cm up into his nasal passages!

Another patient of ours actually inhaled a grass seed into her lungs. If left, forign bodies can lead to infections and even bronchopneumonia so it important when signs such as coughing or sneezing persist that they are investigated. Here at Westover we have a rande of endoscopic cameras that enable us to look into airways as well as the intestinal tract and it was using one of these that we were able to retrieve the grass seed from within the patient's lungs. Although it is almost impossible to stop inhalation of foreign material it is fortunately quite rare. Grass seeds in the ears and feet are, however, much more preventable by just routinely checking your dogs ears and feet after each walk, it may even save you a visit to the vets! already taken one of the kittens, which had not been neutered and has now been abandoned it. Of course, inevitably, this little cat herself has now had kittens and we are back to square one. We were given to understand that there were originally two kittens although one has now disappeared! A trap has now been taken to catch mum and the remaining kitten, which is about six weeks old. It is so frustrating when this happens as you think you have solved a problem only to find its still there.

Benji, one of the older cats mentioned, still waiting for someone to offer him a new home

Cats Protection has recently been promoting the benefits of owning an older cat and, as we have several in care, we were delighted that the golden oldies were getting a special mention. Ivy, a sweet little girl who had been living as a stray, has now found a home and Tockey and Missy, who arrived because their owner could no longer look after them, have been reserved, and are just waiting for some decorating to be completed before they too leave. They go with clean bills of health from our vets and have been vaccinated, chipped, blood tested and had dentals if required, while in care. We do still have several older cats in care, including Benji, a lovely ginger and white boy who came in because his owner had died, and Mange Tout, another ginger lad (the latter cat is still not quite ready to leave as he is on a diet). If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
