Jamie’s Accident Repair Centre Wins Whitenoise 2015 Show ‘n’ Shine Best VW Splitscreen

Continued from front cover... Most of the lower body panels all the way round, including all the floors, were completely shot with rust and needed replacing. Almost all the interior trim was missing and it had no engine.

It took a long time to source all the parts needed to complete the restoration project.

Jamie took the Splitscreen to the VW Whitenoise event at Euston Park in Suffolk on 31 July – 2 August, for a family weekend away and to meet other VW enthusiasts. On the Sunday morning, Jamie’s two daughters Zaranne and Mia pleaded with their dad to enter the Splitscreen into the Show ‘n’ Shine competition, one of the main events of the weekend, with people travelling from far and wide.

So, not to disappoint his girls, Jamie drove down to the arena where the competition took place. After leaving it in the judging ring all day, they all waited patiently for the results to be announced.

One by one, the winners of each class were presented with their awards and the Newland family were delighted when their entry won Best Splitscreen.

Ann’s World-Famous Marmalade

aid of a Malawian Hospital Charity and some of which is used in our restaurant. And now the Cromer Times can exclusively publish her secret recipe.

Over the course of the season we are lucky enough to receive several compliments for our food and accommodation, but the majority are for our absolutely wonderful marmalade, served up for breakfast and even finding its way into the odd dish on the à la carte.

The marmalade is handmade on site by Ann Graveling, who for 28 years cooked, cleaned and basically ran the Grove as well as cooking for, cleaning up after and basically running a family of five children and a husband at the same time. A marvellous effort! And now, in retirement, Ann creates the most fantastic marmalade, some of which is sold (with the help of assorted granddaughters) in

Enjoy a fun family day out‌ that won’t cost you the earth! The region’s leading free, family friendly, green lifestyle event, and hub for all things sustainable, energy efficient and local, is back for the 11th year running. This year’s Greenbuild event, sponsored by Crayford and Abbs and Floodsense, promises to be one of the biggest ever, as organisers North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) confirmed that more than 80 exhibitors, including a brand new craft market, farmers’ market stalls, food and drink stalls and children’s entertainers, have so far signed up to attend the event in the grounds of Felbrigg Hall, near Cromer, over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 September. Greenbuild is a fantastic event for those who want to find out how to lead a greener lifestyle. There will be exhibitors of green technologies like solar panels and electric cars and bikes, and experts in local and traditional products such as timber framing, traditional carpentry and heritage plastering. Talks and advice from exhibitors and volunteers will cover everything from growing your own food, advice on heat pumps and biomass boilers to retro-fitting houses for energy and carbon savings. NNDC’s Planning, Environmental Protection, Waste and Recycling, Civil Contingencies, Environmental Services, Economic Growth and Sports Clubs and Hubs teams will also be ready to chat with visitors and answer questions.

Treat for Norfolk musical lovers

On Saturday 26 September, two of North Norfolk's choirs will be joining forces for a spectacular selection of choral music.

St Nicholas Choir

Items sung by the combined voices of the Cantamus Choir and the men and boys voices of St Nicholas, North Walsham will include music from two coronations, themes from both the big and small screen and a rousing rendition of the most famous choral work of them all, the Hallelujah Chorus by G.F. Handel.

David Ballard said "This promises to be a treat for all to savour, and one that has been a long time coming following the unfortunate postponement of this concert earlier in the year. With upwards of 70 voices filling the dramatic architecture of St Nicholas, audiences can be assured of the roof being raised even higher. With the recent completion of the tower work, 2015 has already been a memorable year for both the church and the town, and this promises to be another memorable event, and well worth the enforced wait - don't miss it!"

Direction will once again be by David Ballard, with Laurence Caldecote providing accompaniment on the churches organ. Tickets are available either on the door, or from arts North Norfolk, No.1 Market Place, North Walsham, both costing £5. Saint Nicholas choir will be launching their CD of Christmas Music, Rejoice and be you Merry, at this concert.

Honing Village Days

Honing Church will be hosting various stalls and exhibitions in Honing Church for their annual village weekend on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September from 10am to 5pm.

Also taking place will be vintage tractors and have a go rides on the tractors. On Sunday there will be a teddy bear parachuting competition, bring your intrepid, brave teddy to jump off the Church Tower. Vintage cars will also be on show. Village World War I posters will be exhibited. Local produce will be for sale and also many others displays of interest.

Call for Singers

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society invite singers to augment their choir for a special concert which they will be performing with the London Mozart Players in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 28 November.

They are particularly seeking additional tenors and sopranos to sing Vespers by local composer Richard Allain and Benedicite by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Whilst there are no auditions applicants must be regular members of a choir. This is a unique opportunity to sing with the composer and a world-renowned chamber orchestra.

RESCUE WOODEN BOATS

Dunkirk Little Ship and former lifeboat Lucy Lavers major restoration was completed by charity Rescue Wooden Boats in time for her to join 54 other Little Ships to make the memorable return trip to Dunkirk in May for the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of troops from the beaches.

Over 200 school children came aboard her on her way to Dunkirk to learn about her story as well as many hundred members of the public. In June she celebrated her homecoming to Wells-next-the-Sea where she now lives.

Lucy Lavers’ Homecoming

You can see details and photos of both her restoration and her Dunkirk voyage on our website www.rescuewoodenboats.com and at the Visitor Centre in Stiffkey NR23 1QF open weekends 10 – 4. Do come and have a look! You can also buy gifts, T shirts, sweatshirts, books, DVDs and some Lucy Lavers memorabilia there.

We’ll help you stand out so more buyers come in Our expert team of property consultants will use comprehensive marketing to showcase your house to the widest audience possible. So you’ll never miss out on a potential buyer.

You can experience being on Lucy Lavers – there are occasional heritage trips Wells Harbour which you can book by contacting Kate on info@rescuewoodenboats.com or 07920 760238

We are now planning our next projects - further heritage fishing boats to restore and stories to be told. Do support us with a donation or by becoming a Friend. Details on the website www.rescuewoodenboats.com or contact Kate.

If you like messing about with boats or in boatyards or are interested in our local maritime heritage, why not talk to us about being an occasional volunteer at the Visitor Centre? Do give us a call on 07920 760238 www.rescuewoodenboats.com; info@rescuewoodenboats.com

Local children and their families are now enjoying a new play area in Ingworth after North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) awarded £7,500 from its Big Society Fund.

The grant of £7,500 towards a total project cost of £16,500 has enabled Ingworth Parish Council to buy a new swing and climbing tower.

NNDC’s Big Society Fund Panel recognised Ingworth Parish Council’s strong desire to improve the play facilities for the local community and in support of the work it had already undertaken to secure funding for the project, was happy to make an award. Ingworth Parish Council has also secured funding from Awards for All England.

Cabinet Member, Cllr. Sue Arnold, at a recent event to unveil the equipment, said “Ingworth Parish Council has demonstrated a strong will to support its local community so I am delighted that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund has been able to play a part in improving such an important facility.

“Play parks are a great place for local children to enjoy and a valuable community meeting point for parents and carers. I would like to particularly like to thank Ann Marie, Gill, other members of the Parish Council and all those involved in this project. Their hard work, commitment and dedication to improve play facilities are commended. I’m sure the new play equipment will be popular and well used.”

North Norfolk District Council set up the Big Society Fund in 2012 to help support, benefit and strengthen communities across North Norfolk. In the last three years, the Fund has awarded grants in excess of £1 million for over 120 community projects that are meeting local need and make a real difference to communities in North Norfolk.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

We will be holding one of our Coffee Mornings and Plant Sales on Thursday 17 September in St Benets Hall.

These have always proved very popular with everyone who supports us and our work, and it is a good opportunity to buy your autumn plants and bulbs from Orchard Farm Plants, who as you all know, always have a stall at our coffee mornings.

We have finally got the go ahead from Norfolk County Council to take over the rather neglected bed in Kings Arms Street, near the Catholic Church. This bed is very difficult to deal with, being under the trees as well as being on one of the busiest pieces of road in the town. So at the moment we are still at the discussion stage as to what is best planted there. No doubt we will come up with a suitable idea before much longer. The bed will be cleared and composted before the winter sets in and will be planted up in the spring.

We have recently had two very nice ladies join our team, and we are very pleased indeed to have them. They both live in the town and fully support our aim of ‘Brightening our Town’. If there are any more potential helpers out there please phone either Muriel on 01692 400717 or Marion on 01692 405211. You can of course also speak to one of us at the Coffee Morning.

NORTH WALHAM HERITAGE GROUP North Walsham is making history by holding its first ever Heritage Open Days event on 10/11/12 September 9.30am to 4pm at No.1, Arts North Norfolk, Market Place, North Walsham, NORFOLK, NR28 9BP. Entry is free.

Piggy-backing on the national initiative, which is celebrating its 21st year in 2015, North Walsham is holding its first ever Heritage Open Days this September.

‘Heritage Open Days’ is England’s largest and most popular voluntary event, celebrating our local history, architecture and culture by offering free access to events and properties that are usually closed to the public or charge admission. In 2014 Heritage Open Days in Norwich and Norfolk contributed £500,000 to the local economy and raised the profile of the local area amongst residents and tourists about the fantastic heritage on offer.

With a burgeoning archive of artefacts and photographs, but without an actual Heritage Centre at present, the newly formed North Walsham Heritage Group has embraced the concept as a means of showcasing the rich history of North Walsham to residents and tourists alike.

Events include a historical treasure trail for the kids, ‘guess the mystery object’, a photographic display of bygone North Walsham and a chance to soak someone in some medieval stocks! There will also be a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Nicholas Groves talk about the history of The Cedars (currently the town’s council offices) which was previously owned by generations of his family.

In addition, WISE Archive member, Olwen Gotts, will be on hand on

Steam in Miniature

The Bure Valley Railway continues to celebrate its 25th anniversary year with an event on 26th and 27th September 2015 which celebrates the heritage of steam in a small scale. Alongside our home fleet of 15” engines purpose built for line, we will have two visiting engines: “Northern Rock” from Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and “No. 24” Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.

North Walsham Times 478 September 5th 2015

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

At long last the phone line has been repaired and no more calls are being lost.

The young cat on the car park in Aylsham has now been caught and is being held safe until she can be neutered. Her kitten was also trapped and has found a new home.

In the last issue I also mentioned that Tockey and Missy, two of our golden oldies, had been reserved and waiting for some decorating to be done before they went to their new home. Unfortunately, the people concerned had a change of heart, so these two lovely girls were put up for adoption once again. I am happy to be able to advise you that a discerning gentleman was delighted to see they were once again available and, as a consequence, Tockey and Missy have now left for their new home. Hopefully, someone will come along soon and offer a home to Benji too.

A recent article in ‘The Cat’ the magazine produced by Cats Protection for volunteers addressed a query on heart murmurs in cats and we know from experience how worried people are when advised their cat has one. The article went on to state that one study of heart murmurs showed that around a third of cats do have one, that the murmur can come and go, and if heard one day may not be apparent the next. It also may only be heard when a cat is particularly stressed. The indications are that about 50 per cent of healthy cats with a murmur will have no underlying disease; it may stem from another unrelated disease to the heart or may even be a completely insignificant “innocent murmur”.

Heart murmurs are graded according to their severity and, again, can vary from day to day. We often see kittens with a murmur when they have their first vaccination and find this has completely disappeared when they have the second. If we have a cat or kitten in care which has

a murmur we are always guided by our vets as to whether any further investigations are needed. If you have a cat that has a murmur or are interested in reading more about it, Cats Protection does produce a small booklet titled “Heart murmurs and heart disease” which gives a little more information on this subject. We usually have a small stock of these available at our major events, so please do not hesitate to ask if you would like one.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

The Norfolk Jazz Quartet played the first of four dates at The Goat Inn, Skeyton, on 16 August and will be playing again on Sundays 20 September, 18 October and 15 November from 1.30p.m. The event was well received with more than 150 people turning up to listen to the band play swinging jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book.

The dates were arranged as the result of the popular Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band events on the first Sunday of every month. The management decided to pursue the jazz theme but wanted to provide something different. The quartet’s dates are in addition to those of the Dixieland band and, if they continue to be successful, will carry on into the New Year. If the music of composers such as Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, George and Ira Gershwin and Antonio Carlos Jobim (to name a few) appeals to you then make sure that you check-out the Norfolk Jazz Quartet at The Goat. Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums). Admission to the jazz is always free and you can just drop in and have a drink but if you want a table for lunch it is best to book. Tel: 01692 538600.

Another North Norfolk venue that has become known for the quality of the music it presents is The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre. The programme continues on Sunday 20 September at 7.30 p.m. with the Simon Youngman Quintet. Simon is based in Norwich and is comfortable playing a range of jazz. His quintet specialises in playing work by composers of the 1960’s and the repertoire will feature music by people such as Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Cedar Walton and Wes Montgomery. The line-up will be Simon (alto and soprano saxophones), Dave Ingham (tenor saxophone), Tom Harris (piano), Owen Morgan (bass) and Cath Evans (drums). Expect groove and swing. Tickets are £8.50 and can be obtained from the box office Tel: 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

How to lose Mummy Tummy… quickly!

OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE

Many women struggle to lose mummy tummy. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and muscles. Hormonal changes cause the body to store fat and fluid. Whilst a lot of these changes get better with time, many mums struggle to get back to their pre-baby shape.

Combine this with an increasing workload, childcare, work and family pressures-unless you have a lot of help it is difficult to find time to devote to long hours of exercise and calorie counting. To top this- if you do manage to lose weight you find fat disappear from areas you don’t want such as your face or bust but those resistant fatty deposits in abdomen respond poorly if at all!

If you also happen to have a caesarean scar it often tethers down the skin and results in a small bulge of overhanging fat above.

achieve mild results at best- we advise to avoid these and go for the laser liposuction which is far superior, minimally invasive and provides wow results at comparable cost.

It is very important to stress that we like to wait at least a year after childbirth before we consider any surgical options.

If you are gradually getting back into shape and happy with the progress you are making then it is great. Continue with the good work. If on the other hand you are struggling then we have many solutions to address your specific concern.

One of the best modern solutions is laser liposculpture, literally sculpting your new body shape with the laser. If you have excess skin we can help you with a mini-tummy-tuck. This is a good option if you also desire a scar revision. The advantage of this option over a traditional tummy tuck is that recovery is quick and you don’t have a long scar. If you have stretch marks and loose skin this can be tightened by our non-surgical treatments.

What about fat dissolving injections?

These can be an option for small areas of fat but we do not think these are a good option for larger areas. There is a lot of controversy about their use and when you consider total cost of the injections to North Walsham Times 478 September 5th 2015

Norfolk Managers Boost their Skills

Two managers from Crayford and Abbs in Norfolk have successfully completed a Leadership and Management Programme. Kevin Abbs, Director of Crayford and Abbs, commissioned the programme with Callander Associates at the beginning of this year.

Rupert Fox (Sales Manager) and Mark Wright (After Sales Manager) have worked with Simon Arthur of Callander Associates on the programme.

“Mark and Rupert were able to combine their specialist knowledge with a variety of management tools and feedback and have taken their day to day work to another level. Their aim, and mine, is to make customers very happy. Happy customers come back and they tell others” said Simon.

The programme provides practical skills and tools which can be used immediately with customers, staff and colleagues.

Mark Wright, Rupert Fox, Simon Arthur and Kevin Abbs.

Kevin Abbs has seen immediate and ongoing results from the programme: “We have been very pleased to be associated with Callander Associates and in particular working with Simon Arthur. The confidence this course has given both Rupert and Mark has been immeasurable and is reflected by the overall team morale and the progress, we as a business, has made this year!”

“We have been so pleased with the training we have received from Callander Associates we are rolling out a CPD programme for the rest of the team to ensure we continue to invest in the future of both our team and as a business.” Simon Arthur can be contacted by email: simon@simonjarthur.com

Eco-Driving Challenge

The Challenge is on at Crayford & Abbs - be the most economical driver of a Nissan Leaf and win £250.

Order what you want, when you want. No contract. No commitment. No strings attached.

The Nissan Leaf Challenge is already happening at Crayford & Abbs and ends on the weekend of September 5th-6th, linked with North Norfolk District Council's Greenbui!d, the region's biggest green lifestyle event, at Felbrigg Hall.

The Leaf having a real world range of 80 to 90 miles, depending on driving style, is often assumed to be impractical and lacking from infrastructure so Crayford and Abbs have developed this challenge to dispel some of these fears!

The idea of the challenge is to drive at normal speeds whilst maximising opportunities to re-generate the battery charge and increase the maximum range. The challenge takes about an hour and a half and the course takes in , Weybourne, Wells and Fakenham, arriving back at Bodham.

Director Kevin Abbs said, "The winner would be the driver who produced the best return and maximised regenerative charging. We want to encourage people to remember that the Nissan Leaf can be driven at the speed limit," he said. "We are just trying to promote green energy and the benefits of driving a Leaf. For the record, I started with a range of 98 miles and finished the 40.3-mile route with a range of 56 miles so I used an extra 1.7 miles of charge but many drivers have had a positive result, using less range than the route's distance."

One of those was Crayford's own Mark Wright, who started on 65 mile remaining charge – completes 40.4 miles and returns still showing 42 miles remaining!

"I think that is unbeatable," commented Kevin, "But there is only one way to find out - come and try the Challenge!"

Anyone interested in trying the Nissan Leaf Challenge should telephone Crayford and Abbs on O1263 588160, email kevin@ crayfordandabbs. co.uk, or visit the dealership in Gypsies Lane, Bodham. North Walsham Times 478 September 5th 2015

Will Your Will Work?

Written by Fiona Hewitt - Director and Head of Private Client Services at Hayes + Storr

The recent case of Ilott v Mitson gave rise to some sensationalist media coverage and comment “Where there’s a Will… the person who wrote it may not get their way” (the Guardian); and “ ‘Your Will can be ignored’ say Judges” (Daily Telegraph) are just two examples.

The facts of the case were briefly as follows: Melita Jackson died in 2004, leaving her estate of almost £500,000 to charities. Her only daughter, Heather Ilott, a 50 year old mother of 5, was disinherited. Mrs Ilott had fallen out with her mother when she eloped at the age of 17. At the time of her mother’s death she was living in a rented house, and was reliant on state benefits.

Mrs Ilott made a claim against her mother’s estate, and was initially awarded £50,000. She appealed against this in the High Court on the grounds that it was too little, but the original order was then overturned in favour of the charities. When she appealed again, the Court of Appeal decided that she should receive a payment from the estate, and in the end she was awarded around a third of the estate.

Despite the media fuss over this and other similar recent cases, claims by disinherited children are nothing new. Faced with such claims, the court must take into account a number of factors, including the financial resources and needs of the applicant and beneficiaries, the deceased’s obligations and responsibilities to both the applicant and other beneficiaries, and any relevant disabilities. The conduct of the parties can also be taken into account.

the charities she chose to benefit, and the Judge decided that she had acted out of spite rather than because she wanted to support their work. As for conduct, Mrs Ilott had made some attempts at reconciliation with her mother which had been rejected, and it was felt that the main cause of the broken relationship was Mrs Jackson herself.

It remains to be seen how much influence this case will have over future decisions, and all cases of this sort depend on the individual facts. However, the decision to award such a significant sum to someone who was otherwise completely disinherited has caused some unease for both lawyers and their clients. It is not uncommon to want to exclude certain family members from benefitting from an estate. If you decide to do this and you think it may cause problems, it is advisable to take the following steps:

to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

3. Leave a letter of wishes with your Will, explaining not only why you wish to exclude someone from the Will (or give them only a minimal gift), but also why you particularly wish to pass your estate to your chosen beneficiaries.
