eastlaw shortlisted for prestigious award

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) award-winning legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the Law Society Excellence Awards 2015. The Law Society has received a great calibre of applications for the Awards and nine exceptional legal teams have been whittled down as the finalists in the ‘Excellence in Business Development’ category.

The business environment and client expectations are constantly evolving. Law firms are finding new and innovative ways to secure new business and deliver legal services. The judges will be looking for examples of business development initiatives that challenge convention and create greater added value. The concept of eastlaw was developed by

NNDC’s legal team itself to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in generating income for the Council. eastlaw’s innovative and agile approach has not only secured its position as a value for money, specialist legal service which is efficient, effective and highly regarded, it has been recognised nationally with

a number of prestigious awards.

Cllr. Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal Services, said “Being shortlisted for yet another award is a tremendous achievement. eastlaw's excellent service to the Council and to other public sector partners was recognised by three awards last year and being a finalist for this important award in 2015 is a muchdeserved further recognition of eastlaw's vital contribution to NNDC's work. We wish them the best of luck for the finals”. The winners of the award will be announced on 22 October.

Wanderlust at the Cley Marshes forgotten parts of Norfolk they made it their mission to bring back the most exciting tales.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust in conjunction with The Gramophones Theatre Company bring you a national tour of Wanderlust. Three women search Norfolk for local stories of adventure.

Wanderlust brings together a touching assortment of remarkable stories collected from people all over the county. A lady with twinkling eyes tells of her heroic journey of survival, an adventurer is lost on Ben Nevis battling against the snow and a man in a wicker chair remembers his dancing days with fondness. Wanderlust weaves stories together using humour, verbatim and beautiful live music to take the audience on an uplifting journey.

This theatre will take place in the new Simon Aspinall Wildlife Education Centre, NWT Cley Marshes Visitor Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 8 October 2015. Tickets are £12 Booking is essential as places are limited: call 01263 740008.

Enjoy a pre-theatre supper with stunning views across the marsh. Call for bookings and menu. A bar will be available from 6pm.

We hope you will tell your members about this uplifting and humorous theatre and we look forward to seeing you there!

Hidden in the deepest, darkest depths of rural England, in the dusty corners of libraries are people with a burning secret. A story to tell... if only someone would ask...

Aldborough

A North Norfolk Postmaster has come to the rescue of a village about to be left without a shop.

The village of Aldborough has a population of more than 600 people, many of them elderly, who are unable to reach other shops and services because they have no car. The shop also serves many surrounding villages including Thurgarton, Hanworth and Calthorpe.

Aldborough has already seen the closure of a butcher’s shop in recent years and one of its two pubs last year. It still has a Post Office and a popular doctor’s surgery as well as a successful school.

But the Spar shop in Aldborough is closing on 26 September this year leaving the village,

designated a service village in North Norfolk District Council’s structure plan, without a shop.

Peter Davison, 66, with the help of his daughterin-law Margaret Adams, 42, is stepping into the breach by making interim alterations to the Post Office to offer a basic service from 29 September. He said ‘I would hate to see the village without a shop. There are many residents Peter Davison and daughter-in-law Margaret Adams are getting ready that depend upon it for to welcome new customers to the Post Office in Aldborough their basic needs. I was ‘I will start off providing simple needs such as looking forward to retiring but I do feel bread, milk, eggs, tea, coffee and newspapers. that something should be done. We will not be a Tesco. I hope we can source much of our food locally, so we will be a local shop in every sense of the word. I will be talking to some local farmers to see whether we can take their meat, local bakers and other food suppliers,’ he said. ‘We will also try and keep convenient hours – from 8.30am to 6pm.’

Mr Davison’s family have lived and traded in the village for the last 100 years. His grandfather was a cobbler and bootmaker in 1914 and the family has had the Post Office for 53 years. Peter Davison has been postmaster since 1994 and he is now assisted by his daughter-in-law, Margaret. Other members of his family and grandchildren live in the village and attend Aldborough school.

The sky is clouding over, The sun comes and goes, What will happen in the future, Nobody knows. People from different lands Are moving to our shores, And we, the British people, Have opened up our doors. I feel for the children, Bewildered and afraid, I saw them on TV, For them all I have prayed. I wish I could be with them To lend a helping hand, But without my metal frame, It's difficult to stand. If immigrants came to my door, I would give them a meal, I guess the world is in turmoil, It all seems quite unreal.

Residents reminded to complete Household Enquiry Form

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is reminding its residents to ensure they have completed the recently issued Household Enquiry Form.

J’s WEDDING CARS

Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.

Forms have been sent to all residents in north Norfolk, asking them to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of NNDC’s annual household enquiry canvass.

The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Reminders are now being issued to those who have yet to respond.

With the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place across the country in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the election takes place they will easily be able to take part.

Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer at North Norfolk District Council said “Although we’ve received a fantastic response from our residents with over 70% of households responding to the Household Enquiry Forms so far, there are still residents who have yet to do so. Changes can be made online at www.registerbyinternet.com/north-norfolk or confirm details are correct by Freephone to 0800 197 9871. You can even now confirm details via text message. Full details on how to do this can be found on the front of your form.”

Every household must provide the information requested on their Household Enquiry Form, even if the property is empty, is a second home, is a business premises, or is a property where no one is entitled to be registered. Failure to respond will result in further reminders being sent and potentially a personal visit to the property being carried out. Residents are encouraged to respond as soon as possible.

Residents seeking further information or guidance are encouraged to visit www.northnorfolk.org/register to view frequently asked questions about the annual canvass and Household Enquiry Forms.

A Doodle by the Seaside

If you were hardy enough to brave the strong northerly wind on Saturday, 5 September, and popped down to Cromer Pier then you would have been greeted by an unusual sight - a mass of colourful sticky notes, every colour of the rainbow, adorning the railings of the pier right along to the theatre end.

They were a record breaking attempt as part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which this year was, aptly, the Guinness World Records. The library service across North Norfolk, sponsored by FALCON (Facilitating Arts and Literature for Children of Norfolk) challenged children to create doodles using ordinary sticky notes and how they rose to this challenge.

It was the brainchild of Community Librarians, Alan Leventhall, Jacquie Salter and Maria Pavledis and FALCON Vice-Chair Adam Faulconbridge. Adam, a professional illustrator, visited all eight North Norfolk libraries to deliver children’s workshops on different drawing styles, from Manga to Comic Book. Adam said ‘The aim of the workshops was to help children discover their own artistic talent and also to encourage them to see their local libraries in different ways as they were asked “what makes your library extra special?”

The eight North Norfolk libraries all contributed doodles to the finished piece along with some doodles from Stibbard Children’s Centre. A massive loom band was also made at Sheringham Library.

The sticky notes were joined to create a garland of colourful bunting. As Ms Pavledis pointed out ‘We wanted to bring the children’s work,

and each other, together at the one venue, uniting as one big community’. The garland decked the railings to make a wonderful decorative string. This was made all the more dramatic by the high winds, and waves crashing against the pier. The sound of several hundred little sticky notes flapping in the mild gale was quite spectacular.

Lots of people turned out, including local Councillors Hilary Cox and Tom Fitzpatrick, and lent a hand attaching the bunting as both they, and the doodles, got buffeted in the wind. Ms Salter said ‘I felt It made for a real sense of community spirit as many passers-by, holiday makers and locals stopped to take pictures and ask what the event was in aid of; bringing the libraries some much needed, positive, publicity. Many children along with their families have come, from as far away as Fakenham, just to see if they could spot their doodle.’

Ms Cox thanked everybody for their effort and thought it was ‘Marvellous to see just what a great contribution our libraries make to our local community.’ Alan Leventhall added ‘The libraries do a lot more beyond the four walls of the library than some people realise.’

Stars of the Cromer Pier show helped celebrate the achievement by appearing in dazzling full costume before their 4pm matinee performance. The garland, when all joined together, circled the main body of the pier and was to the best of the organisers’ knowledge, a local record for the longest ever doodle.

Order what you want, when you want. No contract. No commitment. No strings attached.

We would like to pass on our sincere thanks to all those who helped out on the day, during the workshops and over the course of the summer to help make our ‘record’ attempt. Although tired by the end of the afternoon, everybody who was on Cromer Pier on Saturday afternoon will remember the fun, of a creative day out.

More photos of the day can be found at www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraries or the official FALCON website www.falcon-norfolk.org.uk FALCON aims to provide opportunities for children and young people to engage with creativity in all its forms.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have more good news to report this time as Benji, the golden oldie mentioned last time, has now been reserved and will be in his new home by the time you read this. The tabby boy kitten featured in the photograph with the last article has also found a new home, which has left Fairy, the dear little black girl waiting for someone to offer her a home too.

Cats and kittens come into care for lots of reasons. Recently several have arrived because their owners are moving and are not allowed pets in their new home. It is not only distressing for cats but also for the people concerned. We also find it particularly sad when owners have to re-home their cats because they can no longer look after them. One such cat is Mange Tout, a lovely ginger boy who has always been an ‘indoor’ cat and, consequently, was rather overweight on arrival (over 8 kg). When any animal is overweight to this extent, it is important to lose the weight gradually to avoid damage to other organs. Although still not down to

his ideal weight, he has made remarkable progress since arriving and we believe Mange Tout would now benefit from finding a new home, initially as an indoor cat. He may always be happier without access to the outside world but, living in a house rather than a cat pen, would certainly give him more opportunity for exercise, which would help him reach his ideal weight. He will need, however, to continue having small portions of his special food, all carefully weighed, until this happens. Mange Tout has lost between 1 and 2 kg since he joined us, which is a remarkable achievement, bearing in mind he is confined

Introducing Miramar’s new Physiotherapist

Miramar is proud to introduce Kathryn Shapcott, as our animal Physiotherapist. Kathryn is joining the team having recently completed her animal Physio training, and having been a human physio for 21 years For the last five years, she has been practising as an animal physio in the North Norfolk area, treating a range of species including horses, dogs, cats and some farm animals! Physio is a hands-on, complimentary therapy aimed at relieving pain, improving range of movement and increasing muscle strength. It is useful in many conditions including: • Degenerative conditions like Osteoarthritis • Following surgery or accident • Post injury such as strains, sprains or ligament problems • Spinal or back problems • Hip Dysplasia or Elbow Dysplasia • Some neurological conditions

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Hydrotherapy can offer excellent non-weight bearing exercise for animals that may not be able to exercise as well as normal due to injuries or surgery, as well as provide mental stimulation to prevent boredom. For details of a brand new, local Hydrotherapy pool or to book a physio appointment please contact us at the surgery. We also take physio referrals from neighbouring Veterinary practices, call us for more details.

Physio can also be beneficial for overweight pets that have lost some of their range of movement due to obesity. Combined with hydrotherapy as a weight loss aid and a calorie controlled diet your pet will soon be back to tip top condition.

to a cat pen and cats do tend to put on weight while in care because they have less opportunity to exercise.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit

Patients can be referred for Physio appointments once the vet is satisfied with their diagnosis and treatment plan. Physio plans are then tailored to each individual case and may involve exercises at home with participation from the owners. Recovery times vary with each case; this will be discussed at the first 45 minute consultation. Appointments with Kathryn can be booked through our Sheringham or Cromer surgery; your pet must be under the care of a veterinary surgeon to be referred.

Pet Smile Month

It is not only people that would like a pearly white smile, it’s easy to forget that our four legged friends suffer dental problems as well.

Cats and dogs rarely have the freshest of breath, however bad breath could be a sign of more serious problems. Gum disease is one of the most common problems we encounter in domestic animals, and although it takes a lot to stop them eating, many of our pets live with a degree of oral discomfort without us realising. If left untreated it can commonly lead to pain and mouth infections, but in more serious cases dental disease can lead to weight loss, liver, kidney and heart disease. We see on average 4-5 tooth abscesses every month that could have been avoided with dental treatment at an earlier stage.

There is much we can do at home to improve our pets dental hygiene and keep teeth as clean as possible for as long as possible. Regular brushing a couple of times a week is probably the best method, but ensure you use a dog or cat specific toothpaste as they cannot tolerate the fluoride in human toothpaste. Alternatively, encouraging chewing with safe dental aids such as Kongs or

antler chews will help with the manual removal of tartar and plaque.

Unfortunately, once plaque and gingivitis levels reach a certain stage then scaling and polishing, with tooth extractions as necessary, are the only way to maintain good oral health.

To try to reduce dental problems in our patients we are running a dental campaign through the months of October, November and December where we are discounting all dental procedures and products by 10%.

If your pet has any dental problems or you would just like a bit more information give your local vet a call and arrange an appointment, you could be saving your loved one a lot of tooth ache!

Excel2000 Course for Carers in North Norfolk

‘Care in the Community’ - there are still many gaps - those discharged from hospital and not able to care for themselves, or simply being isolated, lonely and lethargic, being reliant on family, neighbours and friends to provide their daily needs, have someone to talk to. Where does the carer receive training and support? There is a need to encourage safe physical activity, mobility and motivation, thereby improving quality of life for the carer and person being cared for.

The good news is that, following the two successful carers’ courses in North Norfolk, a third training course for carers is starting on 25 September at Kelling Hospital which is free to successful applicants thanks to being sponsored by the pro-active Kelling Hospital Appeal Trust, which understands the need for improving ‘Care in the Community’. This will relieve bed-blocking whilst showing the carer how to improve lifestyle for themselves and the person for whom they are caring. The course is being tutored by the Charity Excel 2000 (Reg Charity No 1038307).

The training will consist of 10 morning sessions and includes specialist speakers from statutory and third sector agencies and the President of the Charity, Bob Laventure, well known internationally for helping people to offset inactivity whilst encouraging a more active and enjoyable lifestyle. This programme is necessary at this austere time with so many cutbacks with the needs of carers being even greater than before whilst supporting local communities. Make the most of this opportunity!

Enquiries to Excel2000: mail@excel2000.plus.com or phone: 01263 826803 and leave a message for Christine McEvoy or Penny Bevan Jones and someone will return your call.

WEA Courses

The WEA North Walsham Branch will be holding the following courses at North Walsham Community Centre

• ‘Coastal Landscapes of East Anglia’ Tutor Chad Goodwin - as coast lines go, that of East Anglia is young, dynamic and often unruly. What history lies behind the landscape we see today and what chances of its survival.

North Walsham Community Choir is going strong - call out for more male members

North Walsham’s community choir is going strong, with 25 regular members coming along to the weekly practice nights. There is still space for more members – particularly men who can help out with the lower sections of the songs.

The choir is working on popular songs, from Abba to the Beatles and will be working on a special set for Christmas appearances. The choir’s debut performance will be round the Christmas tree at the Christmas Fayre, held at the Atrium on Saturday 21 November.

The choir is led by Joseph Ballard, Arts North Norfolk’s director who has taught singing and performance skills for many years, including being a professional performer and singer himself. Joseph said “Some people come along because they want to increase their confidence

and learn about singing in a group and others come along for a fun night out. I’m really proud of the group so far and the friendly atmosphere where singing together forms the best medicine for a busy week!”

The choir for adults meets every Tuesday night, 7pm - 8.15pm at the Atrium. It is £3 per session which includes refreshments. Please note there will be no session on 6 October.

No previous experience is necessary and you do not need to read music. New members are encouraged to come along and find out more about what the group does in its fun and

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

Visitors to London, and probably many of its residents, are unaware of what lies beneath those bustling streets.

During his work as an anti-terrorist officer, retired police officer Peter Lawrence discovered a rich source of the capital’s history underneath its surface, which he shared with Probus Club members last month.

Names such as Westbourne, Fleet and Tyburn are familiar to many, but are rarely associated with rivers, All three rise in an area now known as Hampstead Heath, and all three eventually find their way into the Thames. The Westbourne finds its way via the Serpentine and an aquaduct across Sloane Square Station.

The Fleet, which gave its name to the newspaper industry, runs through the city by way of St Paul’s and Blackfriars, while the Tyburn, which gave the name to a former place execution in the vicinity of Marble Arch, ran through Regents Park.

relaxed atmosphere. The Community Choir is made up of adults and younger groups will be set up for Autumn and the arts charity encourages people to sign up early for the youth choir.

To sign up, pop into Arts North Norfolk at No. 1 Market place or call 01692 218060. More information about other local classes, including acting and drama can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.

Another feature which Peter drew members attention to is that London is actually rising as a result of constant development. An example is the Holborn Viaduct, constructed in 1861, and Blackfriars Bridge. St Brides Church within the City, which was eventually forced to close the churchyard to further internment, following constant burial, upon previous graves, resulting in the construction of the City of London Cemetery.

For those retired or semi retired, business or professional men who may be interested in similar talks, the Club meets the fourth Wednesday of every month, except December, at the Community Centre, at 10am when newcomers are welcome to join us. Ted Gadsden

Following the Great Stink during the summer of 1858, the authorities embarked on a massive sewage disposal operation, master minded by Joseph Bazelgette, which culminated in 1865 in the construction 1100 miles of underground sewers beneath the capital. Hitherto the untreated sewage found its way into the Thames.

The rivers were not used to convey effluence but now serve as storm drains.
