North Walsham Calendar
Issue 480 10th October 2015
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
North Walsham & District Community Archive's mission statement has always been to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, keep it safe for future generations and make it available to the public.
Our most recent project has been to produce a high quality calendar for 2016. A calendar seemed like a great idea for several reasons.
Firstly, it's a great way to safeguard photos for future generations. It doesn't matter how you store photos, all types of media can deteriorate or become damaged or lost.

North Walsham Calendar Continued from front cover...
We digitise all the photos we find to the best possible quality we can and then we make back-up copies but you can't have too much of a good thing and the more copies of these photos that exist spread over so many locations means their chances of survival are that much greater.
Secondly, a calendar also supports our mission statement in another way: it makes the photos available for all. We have a very successful website and Facebook group but we are aware that not everybody has access to computers so the calendar will allow anybody to own these photos. Our open days at the Atrium have been very successful in making our photos available to see for many people, which is great, but many have asked where they can get copies of these photos. Finally, a calendar is a great way to raise funds for the archive group. The interest in a calendar has been very positive since it was first mentioned on our Facebook group page and we think it will be very popular.
The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running many years now, managed by a hard-working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, photography and the local area, but it does incur costs from time to time for equipment, insurance, stationery, etc so it is hoped this calendar will raise enough money to keep the group functioning productively for some time to come.

We picked 12 gorgeous historic photos of North Walsham, from our collection of thousands taken by respected local photographers such as Les Edwards and Fred Mace, and scanned them professionally - directly from the original negatives. Choosing the photos to use was a vigorous process intended to create an interesting and attractive set of photos and making sure we included iconic scenes, lost scenes & people. Inclusion was mainly based on the popularity of the photos, which have been shared on our Facebook group page over the last couple of years. Each photo is litho printed at full A4 size in duo-tone sepia on quality, coated paper to give the best possible quality reproduction and authentic feel. There is a well designed, A4 calendar below for each month of 2016.
We are really proud to say this is a 100% North Walsham product. Photos of North Walsham by North Walsham photographers, part of the North Walsham Archive on a calendar designed in the town and printed by the East Coast Group, a North Walsham business since the 1960s. We have produced a limited run of only 500 copies which are available from House of Hobbies, Showcase Gallery, Café Kitale, Express Printing and Arts North Norfolk in the town, from our website www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk, and will be available at local events between now and Christmas such as the WWI Commemorative Event (Saturday 24 October) and the Christmas Craft Fair (Saturday 21 November) at The Atrium. Calendars are £6 each. If the sales of this calendar are successful you can be sure we'll do it all over again next year with a completely new set of photos. We have plenty to keep us going!
We are also currently creating a set of four Christmas cards for 2015, featuring suitably festive North Walsham scenes, which will be available shortly. Keep up with events via our Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive

Chocolate Fondant
Autumn is sometimes seen as a slightly depressing season as the nights get longer and the days become shorter, but we absolutely love it here at the Grove. We always look forward to launching our Autumn Menu an emphasis on delicious garden produce, succulent game and meats from Cromer's very own master butcher Icarus Hines - and of course this is the perfect period for the odd indulgent dessert here and there.
This lovely chocolate fondant makes a guest
appearance on various party menus throughout the year, and it's a rewarding and fairly straightforward dish to make at home. So treat yourself with a little bit of chocolate magic in front of your roaring fire - and don't forget to come and see us for the Autumn Menu from 12th October!
Ingredients 5 eggs 3 egg yolks 150g caster sugar 250g unsalted butter 300g plain cooking chocolate 70g plain flour 1 vanilla pod
Method 1. Cut the chocolate into small chucks

The September meeting opened with us singing the national anthem to recognise Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I’s 63 years reign as our monarch.
Our speakers were David and Angela Knock who reminded us of traditional toys of our childhood. We were taken on a nostalgic trip fondly remembering conkers, skipping rope games in the playground, cat's cradle and whipping tops. We were shown an assortment of dolls including cabbage patch, ragdolls, baby dolls and a wonderful family of teddy bears some of which were a little threadbare. Golly also made an appearance and we were told how he was responsible for saving two Dutch dolls. We all enjoyed the memory trip and were invited to look at and touch most of the toys on display.
All the members who recently visited Gressenhall for the WI Centenary exhibition enjoyed their day immensely and found it very interesting. The darts team have played very well this season, winning all their games. The final will be played on 20 October and we wish them every success.
The group meeting is Tuesday 20 October at 7.15pm in the Community Centre where there will be a fish and chip supper supplied by the committee.
The next meeting is Wednesday 14 October at 7.15pm in St. Benet Hall. The competition is for four little cakes, which will be judged by the committee.
Visitors and new members are always welcome so come along and join us.
2. Melt chocolate and butter over a Bain Marie 3. Beat eggs, egg yolks, vanilla and sugar until thick, then add the chocolate mix 4. Sift in the flour 5. Pour the mix into greased and floured moulds and refrigerate for 3 hours 6. Bake in the oven at 180c until the top starts to crisp up 7. Serve with clotted cream or vanilla ice cream

Reassurance for Independent Flood Wardens
Over £1000 was raised at a charity variety show held at Davenports Magic Kingdom Theatre for the Independent Walcott Emergency Volunteer Association, towards their public liability insurance, clothing and equipment.
Local celebrities entertained an enthusiastic audience last month, including international magician Roy Davenport, Comedian Pat Nearney, the outrageous Tina Bradshaw, escapologist Oliver Garwood, magician Brian Braggs L to R: performers Pat Nearney, Bev Bishop and sensational young (Tina Bradshaw), Roy Davenport, Amy vocalist Amy Morris, Morris, Oliver Garwood and Brian Braggs who has gained a Photo: Maurice Gray following of fans.
The WEVA’s have been established for over 40 years and became independent in 2008 after the seaside village of Walcott was severely flooded and again in December 2013.
Chairman of WEVA, Paul Woolston, said “WEVA have been involved with helping local residents when flooding occurs and they have ‘watched out’ day and night when the Walcott coastline has been threatened with extremely high tides and flooding, with the objective of reassuring the residents and getting them to safety if they have to evacuate their homes”. Mr Woolston’s father was part of the team who set up the Flood Warden Service over 40 years ago.
WEVA Secretary, Sylvia Andrews said “The response was amazing and all the artists gave their performance freely and we had a lot of support from local businesses and individuals who donated money and prizes for the raffle and auction and a big thank you goes out to them all for their support”.
Poppy Appeal
The Royal British Legion raises the major proportion of the monies they spend supporting current and former service personnel through their annual Poppy Appeal.
This year, in North Walsham, we are again fortunate to have received invitations from both Sainsburys and Waitrose to collect in their stores.
Unfortunately old age and infirmity reduces our pool of volunteer collectors each year and we are desperately in need of further volunteers to ensure we raise as much as possible to help support the Legion’s work. If you could spare just a couple of hours any time during any day between 28 October and 9 November to assist please contact the local Poppy Appeal organiser, David Audley, on 01692 40441

North Walsham Christmas Lights Switch On
For many years, North Walsham has been holding its own Christmas Lights Switch On, which brings in the whole town and also others from surrounding areas. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 28 November from 2pm through to 7pm. The whole purpose of this event is to bring together families and to celebrate the spirit of Christmas.
This year will be bigger and better than previous years as there will be music from Into The Crowd, Salvation Army, Manor Road Schools and more in the pipeline. We will also see the return of roasted chestnuts, which will put everyone in the mood for Christmas! Also, as in previous years, North Norfolk Radio will be entertaining us from 5pm. There will be rides for the younger generations or even the older ones.
Santa will be taking time off making his presents to visit North Walsham at 4pm to give all the boys and girls an early Christmas present in Santa’s Grotto.
The stalls will include the North Walsham Christmas Lights Committee’s Deal or No Deal, Tresal Catering, Victory Explorers, Benjamin Foundation and so many more interesting and unique stalls, from tombolas to food, from rides to gifts. Overall, this event is one that North Walsham will cherish forever and it is something everyone looks forward to every year.
The Light Switch On would not be going ahead if it wasn’t for the local businesses, general public and also the committee members. In order to make this event as amazing as possible, come along on Saturday 28 November, 2pm – 7pm.
If you are interested in having a stall, you can email us on nwchristmaslights@gmail.com or you can follow us on social media platforms - Facebook: North Walsham Christmas Lights or Twitter: NWXmaslights

Christmas Card Competition for The Matthew Project
The summer is sadly over and autumn is fast approaching! That can only mean one thing… Christmas is not far away! Tesco are already stocking their Christmas chocolates and M&S have their biscuit range out already!
We are launching a Christmas Card Competition! www.matthewproject.org/christmas-card-competition We would love anyone, yes anyone, to participate and enter a design, photo, drawing etc into one of our five categories and be in with a chance of having their design chosen, showcased, awarded and printed on the front of a card which we will sell.
The Youth Team exists to support The Matthew Project charitable and contracted services, both adult and young people as well as create innovative ways of engaging and supporting children and young people under 25 years old in Norfolk & Suffolk. This small initiative will help support us to continue doing this! Thank you in advance for your help! Time to get creative!

London Mozart Players to perform at Cromer Parish Church On Saturday 28 November 2015 Cromer Parish Church will resound to the fine orchestral tones of the London Mozart Players (LMP).
Under the direction of Geoff Davidson they will be joining Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society to perform Norwich-based composer Richard Allain’s Vespers. This will be something of a coastal home-coming for this work which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus in 2011 to reflect the coastal heritage of Southend-on-Sea. Over the summer Mr Allain has re-worked and re-orchestrated this piece especially for this north Norfolk performance. The choir will be joined by a line-up of fine soloists including soprano Rosamund Walton, mezzo soprano Evie Anderson and tenor Oliver White.
that bring new and contemporary music alongside orchestral classics for audiences to hear and enjoy. We are especially pleased that pieces by two Norfolk-based composers, Jane Wells and Richard Allain, have been featured in this year’s concert series.”
The concert will include two pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams: Benedicite and Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and John Adam’s Shaker Loops which will brilliantly demonstrate the active part which LMP play in contemporary music.
This concert presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of a local composer and gives the choir another opportunity to sing with a leading orchestra. Don’t miss it! Box Office 01263 822347 Email boxoffice@sheringhamlittletheatre.com Full details www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk
This concert is being presented as part of the 2015 Orchestras Live North Norfolk concert series, featuring world class chamber orchestras performing at rural venues in the district, and is supported by North Norfolk District Council, Orchestras Live and Arts Council England in partnership with local promoters.
Henry Little, Chief Executive of Orchestras Live, said “We are delighted that our sixth annual concert series in partnership with North Norfolk District Council will include a new version of Vespers by Richard Allain. Orchestras Live is committed to producing adventurous programmes

North Norfolk Speakers Club
President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, Stuart Richards, recently visited a Speakers Club in Asheville, North Carolina.
Both clubs are affiliated to Toastmasters International, which has 14,650 clubs worldwide and since 1925 has been helping people from all walks of life to gain confidence in speaking and develop skills in communication and leadership.
‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’, said Stuart. ‘Dress code was very casual, but even so it can be daunting visiting another club, especially wearing shorts! I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the hospitality I received President of North Norfolk Speakers Club Stuart and as members of Richards (left) visits Speakers Club in North Toastmasters there Carolina was common ground and shared experience. It was like visiting an extended family. I had a lot of fun, learned more about improvised speaking and left with new ideas to bring back to my own club.’
To develop speaking, communication and leadership skills, whether at work or socially, join us at North Norfolk Speakers Club. Meetings are on alternate Wednesdays at 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue. For more information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk , email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or tel. Gillian 01692 650250 Guests and new members are always welcome.

Shantymen 25th Anniversary Gig – Cromer Pier Pavilion Friday 6 November
During 2015 the Shantymen have been celebrating their 25th anniversary, having started in 1990. This year, as well as the other forty odd gigs in their programme they also planned to do three very special gigs, two in Sheringham and the last one at the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on 6 November.
Musical Director Brian Farrow said This will be our final celebratory gig of 2015 and we are really looking forward to it. To make it really special we have asked Keith Skipper if he will join us for the show. We have always admired Keith’s work and he will bring his own unique taste of Norfolk to this show, which we have called ‘The Silver Darlings’.
They are still planning the show details but Secretary Dick Grieve added, “We propose to tell the story of the road we have travelled over the last twenty five years and include a few well-placed anecdotes from our resident comedians and I know Keith will add his own splendid blend of humour”
everyone to complete the form on our web site and send it to our secretary. He continued ‘This is your chance to be one of the Four Charity Beneficiaries from the Silver Darlings Concert on Friday 6 November at The Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier’.
They also plan to make another CD late this year or early next which will feature their favourite and most popular songs. Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “The Shantymen are going to make a list of their twenty four favourite songs and will then choose the most popular ones for the CD. However we thought the public might wish to have an input into what’s on the new CD so we are inviting them to let us know their favourite songs which we have recorded.”
You will find a list of all of the songs they have recorded in the discography section of their web site www.shantymen.com and the Shantymen have said that if you have any favourites please let them know.
In summing up, Musical Director Brian Farrow said ‘This has been a wonderful year for us and this will be a very special show. But I would like to add some very specific thanks to all of the guys, some still with us, many who have left, but to all who travelled this road with us. We could not have done it without them.
The Shantymen are keen to demonstrate their thanks to the people of Norfolk who have supported them over the last twenty five years and have come up with a novel way to show that.
Chairman Bob Hawkins said ‘We have decided to give all of the profits from the Pier show to four local charities, one of which is the RNLI with whom the Shantymen have always been closely linked. The other three, which must be Registered Norfolk Charities, will be picked at random on the night of the concert from those who have expressed a written interest. So to be in with a chance, we are asking

North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme At September’s North Walsham Farmers Market there was a stall offering something that money can’t buy – Good Neighbourliness!
The Town Mayor, Cllr Brenda West visited the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme (NWGNS) stall to support the Scheme which launched on 1 September.
A spokesman for the NWGNS Management Committee said “We had a very encouraging day, with a number of new volunteers signing up on the day, as well as giving information to over 200 people. We had a very positive response from everyone we spoke to, showing that there is a genuine spirit of good neighbourliness in North Walsham.”

The guest speaker Mark Bruhin founder and Managing Director of Beacon East had been instrumental in organising the Futures event. NO/WHERE Fringe Festival
The third Fringe Festival for North Walsham returns at the end of October with some spooky offerings for the town.
The Fringe events kick off with a community talk and discussion ‘Is North Walsham really No Where?’. The discussion is based on the format of the first in the series, which proved a popular and forward-thinking move, which was presented as part of the town’s main Festival in June.
families will take place on the Thursday morning at No. 1 – where everyone can get involved with Halloween arts and crafts. By the evening, No. 1 will be transformed into an informal music venue ready for the NW UnPlugged night which showcases local talent and acoustic music.
Crude Apache theatre company will be bringing their musical comedy take on the life of Alan Smethurst, the Singing Postman, on the Wednesday evening. The show is presented in partnership with the Fringe and COAST.
The Infamous Covert Cabaret will entertain audiences on the Friday evening, in the setting of a cabaret lounge of bygone days with illusion, comedy, dance, song and a mystical spirit cabinet act. Old songs will swoon from the bitter Ivanna More and the spontaneous Hans Hoffyer will compere the night.
On Halloween itself, the Fringe presents ghost walks around the historic town centre. Walks begin at 4pm, 7pm, 9pm and 11.30pm with the later the A free drop-in workshop for children and their scarier precedent in mind and the 4pm will be suitable for children, where fancy dress is North Walsham Poors Allotment Charity encouraged. they will be serving hot drinks before and after to keep everyone warm.
The Fringe, organised by Arts North Norfolk, is working in partnership with COAST Festival this year to bring the Singing the Postman show, North Norfolk’s Got Talent and a photography competition which will be exhibited in the Atrium Gallery.
Joseph Ballard, Director of Arts North Norfolk and the Fringe said “We’re really excited about this year’s NO/WHERE Fringe, especially after the success of the main town festival in June. It is also great to be working with COAST on a few projects to bring different experiences to North Norfolk. Halloween is a great time to explore the darker side of things and I’m proud to present the ghost walks as part of this year’s programme.”

North Walsham Gymnastic Club welcomes 27 new members!
North Walsham Gymnastics Club welcomed 27 new members to the Club at the start of September, however the waiting list continues to expand as the demand for children from as young as three wishing to take up gymnastics. The committee are working hard to find the right premises locally, primarily to get a quality purpose built facility to enable expansion where more classes can be offered and get children actively involved in sport in the local Wesley, Marissa, Summer and Molly community. Such a resource is expensive to equip and fundraising is ongoing - North Walsham Rotary Club very kindly donated £250 recently, for which the club are extremely grateful.

Alexis Thurston, Head Coach, said ‘we’ve had a very busy summer holidays running recreational and fun gym sessions at the Sport Centre. The competition and development gymnasts also trained hard, with 16 getting ready for the Norfolk Voluntary Levels Competition at the UEA on 27 September’.
Alexis also reflected back to July when some of the recreational groups, coached under the supervision of Shelly Bumfrey competed at the UEA. ‘Nine gymnasts achieved one or more individual medals (20 in total) on various apparatus. It is a wonderful achievement for gymnasts who train less than four hours a week to be rewarded with a medal(s) for all their hard work and dedication’.
Elliott, Faith, Emily and Jasmine The club will also be starting a satellite pre-school gym class at Victory Swimming Pool in North Walsham from November. For more information on this session, please contact alexis.thurston@north-walsham-gymnastics-club.co.uk

WEATHER SUMMARY and FORECAST FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS
The forecast for the past three months was going ok until early August, when a 'blocking high', settled to the east of us, halted or diverted unsettled conditions continuously across the British Isles, whilst most of Europe got prolonged summery conditions.
September has seen a slow return to more settled conditions and this should continue into October. However, it cannot be a given that high pressure will give us above average temperatures as seems to be a recent pattern - some of the time winds will come in from a colder quarter and give us quite a drop in temperature. As we progress through to the end of the year, although there will be the usual trend to more unsettled weather, there seems to be little in the way of cold weather for us.
Two items of interest, and unknown influence, are the El Niño in the eastern Pacific, which in the past have increased stormy winter weather and, in 2010, an early and prolonged cold winter, so we won't know, with more certainty, until we are into the winter how things are going to pan out.
There is also a large area of cold water in the North Atlantic, which has been there for some time now. Ned Nimbus, September 2015

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We are happy to report that Fairy, the little black kitten, is now in her new home. She did however give her new family some worries when she disappeared shortly after arriving and, because they could not find her, they thought that she had managed to get out. After asking neighbours to search for her, this mischievous little kitten was discovered hiding behind the appliances in the kitchen. Needless to say there was a very relieved family with a kitten receiving lots of cuddles.
Before offering a home to a cat or kitten there are several things you should consider, avoiding heartache at a later date. Cats live much longer nowadays and it is not unusual to have a cat still fit and well in its late teens or even, like my cat, into their twenties. If not in the first flush of youth ourselves perhaps it would be better to offer a home to an older cat rather than a kitten. You will have the benefit of knowing the cat’s temperament and are also less likely to be tripped up by a very active youngster. If you are in rented accommodation you need to make sure your landlord will allow pets, and if so how many. Another thing to consider is the length of your tenancy. So many cats are handed into care because their owners have had very short tenancies and find, when
they move; the new landlord is not so amenable and will not allow pets. Another consideration, if taking short term lets, is the disruption to a cat each time you move which can cause behavioural problems. The final point to consider is the cost; not only how much will need for food and cat litter but also how you will pay for any veterinary treatment. Although pet insurance will cover accident and illness you will still need to budget Pickles, whose owners for neutering, vaccinations and flea and worm moved and were not treatments. If everyone considered these points allowed to have any there would be considerably less cats and kittens pets in their new home out there needing our help. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
Animal Magic Dog Lends a Helping Paw to Local Stray Dogs Members of Animal Magic Dog Club took part in their ‘Feed a Norfolk Stray Month’ which saw the club and its members donate over 200 kilos of dog food to local homeless dogs.
The food was donated to Norfolk Strays, a local organisation dedicated to saving dogs who find themselves in the dog pound. Without them, after seven days, dogs remaining unclaimed would sadly be put to sleep. Over the past eighteen months they have saved over 200 dogs, who are now happily living in new homes and Animal Magic are delighted to support such a worthwhile cause.
Norfolk Strays is ran by a small team of dedicated volunteers. To find out more about their work or to make a donation please contact norfolkstraydogs@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page Norfolk Strays needing urgent rescue spaces. Pictured with just a small amount of the donated food is Tash Rust from Norfolk Strays with Tia who is licking her lips in the hope that all this food is for her, with Fiona Leadbetter from Animal Magic Dog Club.

NO LONGER A WOMEN’S ONLY CLUB Laser and Cosmetic Treatments for Men
A recent study at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men. We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics.
Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them. It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things. Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits. Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who are often the people who introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments!)
Here at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity. Dr Gheyi helps to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve.
The effects of ageing can be reversed and a new physique can be attained, which could not be achieved even with exercise and a healthy diet.
The most popular treatments among men are photo rejuvenation for conditions such as rosacea, thread veins on the face and pigmentation issues. Botox and filler treatments have also seen an increase in popularity. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgical treatments we see men having their varicose veins removed and having liposuction for body contouring. All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues.
Here is a selection of our treatments for men: Acne or acne scarring [chemical peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, Lasers]; Fractional co2 laser resurfacing; Shaving bumps, moles, warts and verrucae removal; Unwanted hair on face, back, chest, legs etc.; Rosacea; Pigmentation/ broken veins on face; Thread and spider veins; Frown lines, crow’s feet & wrinkles; Ageing face, volume replacement, nose to mouth lines etc.; Age spots, sun spots and liver spots; Radiofrequency skin tightening; Ultrasound body contouring; Liposuction for face, neck, chin, jowls, man boobs, love handles and many body areas; Face and neck Lift; Hair loss treatments; Varicose veins Laser treatment
If you are interested in finding out more about our treatments please log onto www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 or 01603 736487.
Mothers’ Union
At our September meeting, we were pleased to welcome Adrian Rudman who came to talk to us about the Food Bank.
Although we all knew about the existence of the Food Bank, we had little understanding of how people were referred and how the food was distributed. Adrian’s talk was very informative and made us aware of the many ways in which the Food Bank was able to help individuals and families in times of crisis, supplying not only sustenance but also a listening ear should it be needed.
On Thursday 10 September we ran a coffee morning in St Nicholas Room to raise funds for AFIA (Away From It All) who organise holidays for families in need.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13 October at 2.30 pm in St Nicholas Room. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For further details contact Ann on 01692 402705.

Increase of Inheritance Tax allowance to £1 million where home inherited by descendants Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
“A family home is likely to remain the primary asset for many middle-income taxpayers. Fortunately there are new provisions in the Finance Bill 2015 that provide significant potential benefits to tax-payers leaving their home to descendants.” So says the Government’s preamble to the Finance Bill 2015. It must, of course, be passed by Parliament in order to become law.
The small print is far from straight-forward and this is not the universal panacea that it might first seem.
The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new section into the Inheritance Act 1984. It will provide an extra Nil Rate Band if the home passes to descendants. It will apply only to deaths after 6th April 2017.
The effect should eventually be to increase the Nil Rate Band for a home-owning married couple (or civil partners) to £1,000,000.
The relief will start to take effect in April 2017. It will be phased in, starting with an additional £100,000 in 2017, £125,000 in 2018, £150,000 in 2019 and then the final £175,000 in 2020. The ordinary Nil Rate Band of £325,000 will remain frozen until April 2021.
The home must pass to a direct descendant of the deceased, which includes step-children
but not unmarried partners who lived at the property with the deceased.
Any unused band will be transferable to a spouse or civil partner. There is tapered withdrawal of the new band for estates valued at more than £2,000,000.
To avoid those who sell their homes, to downsize or to move into care or to live with relatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposed that legislation will be included in the 2016 Finance Bill to extend this relief where the deceased downsized or ceased to own a residence on or after 8th July 2015. The provisions do not come into effect until 6 April 2017 and so it remains necessary to consider other options for effective succession tax-planning for the family home in the interim. As ever, it is important to take specialist qualified advice.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
The Broads are considered among Norfolk’s most popular tourist attraction, and, while the wherries are an iconic feature, those few still remaining are regarded as a source of recreation rather than as an essential working craft.
The ‘Albion’ and the ‘Maud’ are the only remaining working wherries still in existence. Yet wherries played a pivotal role during the eighteenth and nineteenth century in the industrial activity of Yarmouth and Norwich as Simon Partridge explained to North Walsham Probus members last month. Their role was conveying freight between Yarmouth and Norwich, the latter at one period was the third most important city in England. The freight, included timber from Scandinavia, and, before the introduction of refrigeration, ice, which was essential, together with salt, for the export of herrings. 93% of the catch landed at Yarmouth was exported. Much of the ice was obtained locally in the Broads. Other freight comprised brick from Burgh Castle, and sugar from Cantley. Marsh hay was also exported to London, specifically to meet the needs of the horse drawn hackney carriages. North Walsham Times 480 October 10th 2015

The majority of wherries were of clinker construction, which meant the wooden strakes were overlapping, although the ‘Albion’ is of smooth carvel design. Wherries were normally manned by a skipper and mate. The skipper tended to rely upon his instincts rather artificial aids. The bows of a wherry were white to provide recognition in the dark rather than using a lantern. A significant feature for the skipper to consider was the differing buoyancy between the heavily salted coastal waters and the fresh inland waters. A greater load, usually meant greater revenue, but the inland rivers could increase the wherry’s draught with disastrous consequences.
Wherrymen not only sailed the vessels but also if necessary, pushed the vessels, and loaded the freight. Their role was eventually superseded at the beginning of the century by rail.
For those retired, or semi retired, business or professional men who may be interested in similar talks, the Club meets at the Community Centre, the fourth Wednesday of every month, except December. The next meeting is on the 28 October. 27
THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER HOPS IN FIELDS AND GARDENS
When we think of hops it is probably beer and hop fields that spring to mind but it is also an appealing and useful garden plant.
The traditional hop field, a forest of poles the height of three men, supporting a cat’s-cradle of wires, is an extraordinary scene with no parallels in English agriculture. It is hard to imagine the landscape in the main growing areas of Kent, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Worcestershire at the peak of hop growing in the 1870s, when nearly 72,000 acres were under cultivation.
The hop is a native wild plant of hedgerows and scrub but it was not until Flemish weavers settling in the weald of Kent in the 1520s introduced new varieties of hops together with cultivation and brewing techniques that hop growing developed.
At the beginning of September the aromatic cones of the female plant are ripe for picking. Many hands were needed and it became traditional for families from London’s East End, gypsies, itinerant workers and local
residents to spend three to four weeks ‘hopping’ in Kent and Sussex. The hoppers were badly paid and provided with little in the way of shelter. Dermatitis sometimes results from harvesting hops and although few cases required medical treatment, an estimated 3% of the workers suffered some type of skin lesions on the face, hands and legs. Hops are also toxic to dogs!
At first hops were used because they prolonged the life of beer but their alpha acids also impart bitterness and their volatile oils give flavour and aroma. Each variety has unique qualities that give beers their range of tastes.
By 2003 the acreage of hops in the UK had fallen to 3,600 acres on only 95 farms. Today hops are more likely to be seen in gardens with their highly coloured, golden or attractively variegated foliage trained over a fence or trellis or into a large shrub or small tree. The flowers/hops are useful for dried flower
NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
It has been a very busy summer for Club members working on a number of flower festivals and weddings, although we did get to relax in Mary Poortvliet's lovely garden at Colby for our annual garden meeting in August. Everyone enjoyed a plant identification game followed by tea and delicious scones with strawberries and cream before the clouds gathered.
Finally, after a long wait, we are all looking forward to hosting a fabulous Open Meeting at the Atrium on Thursday 22 October when we will be welcoming Jonathan Moseley on stage. Jonathan is a NAFAS national demonstrator, Chelsea gold medalist, teacher and also the in-house floral designer at Chatsworth House, where he designs & creates the annual Florabundance exhibition there. Jonathan was also the flower arranging judge on The Great Allotment Show on BBC 2 over the last two years.
Jonathan's flower arranging demonstrations are legendary in the NAFAS world and always eagerly anticipated and, as the Atrium here in North Walsham has plenty of comfortable seating, we feel lucky to be in a position to offer tickets to the public. ‘Living The Dream’ will begin at 2pm and will be followed by afternoon tea. There will a selection of unique & local crafts and clothing on sale before and after the demonstration too - perfect for early Christmas shopping. Tickets are £20 and available now from Sue Bloomfield on NW 500440. Don't miss out! North 28 Walsham Times 480 October 10th 2015
arrangements or you can consider brewing your own beer.
Hop plants are hardy perennials and should be grown in the garden in moist but well drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade.
The basic variety is Humulus lupulus a rampant climber with oppositely held, green, lobed leaves on bristly stems. Rather coarse for the garden, but it may be of use in wilder areas for covering unattractive structures. The forms with coloured leaves are those most often seen, such as ‘Aurea’ which has fine golden foliage that is especially eye-catching in spring. Both male and female plants are in cultivation; the male is more commonly grown but the female is more desirable with its attractive flower heads in summer. Other varieties to look for include ‘Diva’, ‘Prima Donna’ and ‘Taff’s Variegated’.
To grow this plant sow seed at 15-18 degrees centigrade in spring, it is also possible to take cuttings. Hops are subject to Verticillium wilt. Hops are therefore well worth growing, for covering fences or trellises, for dried flower arranging and for brewing your own beer and if that is not enough hops are used in herbal medicine in a way similar to valerian, as a treatment for anxiety, restlessness and insomnia. A pillow filled with hops is a popular folk remedy for sleeplessness. It is believed that a hop pillow cured the insomnia suffered by King George III. Bob Wilkinson
NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
Autumn seems to be well and truly on its way now with some of the mornings and evenings really chilly and certainly, as I am writing this, very dull.
We start our autumn programme of planting on 12 October, and would be really pleased to have any extra help for that following fortnight. Our planting plan will be blue, orange, and yellow pansies, as well as purple and yellow violas and wallflowers.
We will also be starting work on our new bed, which is to be called the Catholic Church Bed in the next few weeks, although it has already had a weed treatment, it will be dug over, composted and left until the spring. We would like to ask any member of the town who has any ideas of what to plant in this rather difficult bed to contact us with their thoughts. We are looking for lots of colour but it must be no more than 3ft high so as not to restrict the view of the traffic coming round the corner into Park Lane.
Our lovely Coffee Morning on 17 September went very well and for the first time we ran a tombola instead of a raffle. This went down very well with most people.
If you would like to contact of us on any of the above, the numbers are as usual: Muriel 01692 400717 email murielmoorhouse@btinternet.com or Marion 01692 405211 email marionlane10@talktalk.net

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Lesters Survive Gale Force Decider The new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League is underway - this year has seen two new teams enter (Mundesley and Sheringham LCC gain a new team each) but Hunworth Outlaws withdrew the week before the season started. All six of North Walsham’s teams return to make up nearly a quarter of the League’s twenty-five team line-up with three (NWSCA, NWSCB and NWSCD) competing in the eight team Premier division. NWSCE were due to have been relegated from the First division by the cruellest margin of a single point but have been saved by the new teams and join NWSCC in the nine team division while NWSCF compete in the eight team Second Division. As traditional before the League itself starts, the action got underway with the two Knockout Cups. In the first round of the Knockout Doubles Cup NWSCE’s Eric Dolden and James and Ben Lester hosted Aylsham B’s John Hall, Will Sutton and Ray Gale who was making his return to the League after several years away. The Lesters took the opener against Hall and Sutton 14-12 in the decider before Gale and Sutton levelled with a win in four. The next two battles went to the hosts with a brace of wins in four and the Lesters then took a two sets lead as NWSCE looked good for a comfortable 4-1 advantage, however the match turned in this fifth battle as Hall and Gale
recovered to win in five before the visitors won the next two encounters both in straight. The tie now looked very different as Aylsham B were suddenly one win from the last sixteen at 4-3 up but James Lester and Dolden beat Hall and Sutton in straight to force a deciding match which saw the Lesters come through an incredibly tight tussle against Gale and Sutton 13-15, 17-15, 13-11, 13-11 to seal the 5-4 win for NWSCE. Elsewhere in the Cup NWSCF lost 5-0 to Mundesley A but NWSCA beat Aylsham C 5-0 and NWSCD won 9-0 away to LCC Seals and both teams join NWSCB and NWSCC (who both were drawn byes) in the second round.
In the first round of the Singles Cup NWSCE were drawn again against Aylsham B losing this time 6-3 while NWSCF lost 6-1 to Aylsham D. NWSCB and NWSCD are yet to play while NWSCC won 7-2 away to LCC Lobsters. At Antingham Village Hall, NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner. An outrageous net in his favour at 9-9 in the third was the turning point in the opener as Vaughan beat Wilson in four. De Neve won the first six points on his way to taking the first set of the next battle, but Baldock-Yaxley hit back to win in four before
persistent and steady play from Beane saw him recover deficits in the first and third as he beat Warner in straight. Some scintillating forehands saw Baldock-Yaxley beat Wilson in straight before Vaughan and Warner split their first two sets. The Backhander then raised his game and hit some simply gorgeous winners to come through in four but Beane closed out NWSCA’s win with victory in three against De Neve. The dead rubbers saw one more set for the visitors which Wilson took from Beane as NWSCA won 8-1.
