North Walsham Opticians Celebrates 50 years in Business R M Ling finds longest served patient to mark occasion

North Walsham independent business R M Ling Opticians celebrated their 50th anniversary in the town on Thursday 8 October. To mark the occasion, the practice held three days of celebrations culminating in an anniversary party attended by North Walsham Mayor Cllr Brenda West. Also present was the practice’s longest served patient, Guest of Honour Mr Jan Fiszer from North Walsham.

Mr Fiszer has been a patient at R M Ling Opticians since February 1966, when he visited for an eye examination just three months after the practice opened. Now in his 49th year as a patient, Mr Fiszer was presented with a gift from the practice during the 50th anniversary party.

Practice visitors were able to enter a free raffle and enjoy refreshments and special discounts on spectacles. Also available to view were exclusive frame previews and a nostalgic display incorporating the town’s history and some optical history too. In the run up to the event, the practice also held a charity prize draw to raise funds for the North Norfolk Association for the Blind. The total raised is yet to be announced as donations continue to come in.

“We were delighted to see so many friends and patients over the course of our anniversary celebrations, and particularly thrilled to officially

thank our longest served patient, Mr Fiszer, who has been visiting our practice from its earliest days,” said Martin Ling, Owner and Optometrist at R M Ling Opticians. “We would like to thank our patients and Eyeplan members for all their support over the years and for celebrating this milestone in the practice’s history with us.”

R M Ling Opticians, based on New Road, was founded by Optometrist Mike Ling on 1st November 1965. Mike was joined by his late wife, Dilys, and the partnership extended in 1993 to accept their elder son Martin, and again in 1997 when Debbie Daplyn joined them.

R M Ling Opticians is an independent practice that has gained an excellent reputation locally for the quality of its products and service. Its aim is to always put the customer first and offer the sort of personal and high quality service that is rarely found these days. For more information please visit www.rmling.co.uk. The practice also offers the Eyeplan eye care scheme to make the highest quality eye care more accessible.

Norfolk artist donates one of his paintings to the East Anglian Children Hospice Love Art appeal

Peter Herring of East Anglian Children's Hospice (EACH) recently visited North Walsham artist Jamie Cooper to pick up a painting for the charities Love Art appeal.

The appeal is being run as a competition by EACH to promote and raise funds for the Nook, which is a support complex planned to be built in five acres of idyllic woodland near Framlingham Pigot, just south of Norwich.

As well as the competition, EACH are asking local artists to donate artwork to the appeal. It was this call-to-action to which Jamie responded. The competition runs until 1 November and artists can find further information on the website at www.each.org.uk/the-nook/events/details/loveart-competition.

Jamie Cooper opened his gallery/studio at Alby Craft Centre earlier this month. He said 'When I saw the appeal was running I thought that I had a painting I could spare. I have previously taken part in three dragon boat races to raise money for EACH and organised and submitted a team when I used to work at EAGIT Ltd. (East Anglian Group Industrial Training). It's a charity that seems to get things done and I am pleased to be able to help’.

Local disaster movie for Northrepps!

The next film being put on by Northrepps Film Society is a true local disaster movie: Floods of East Anglia, 1912-53.

Consisting mainly of archive news footage, this vividly recalls some of the sea’s most dramatic invasions of our coast and shows the chaos caused as homes and livelihoods are swept away. As it lasts little more than an hour it will be preceded by a second, shorter film of local interest to fill out the evening.

The show is on Thursday 12 November (not the first Thursday of the month, as usual) when doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pm with drinks for sale until the first film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 payable at the door. We hope to see you there!

For more details see www.northreppsfilmsociety.co.uk.

Stay Well This Winter - get your flu vaccination

GP Practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland are urging patients to help themselves stay well this winter by booking in for a free NHS flu vaccination.

People with serious health conditions, adults over 65, some carers and healthy children between the age of 2 and 4 all qualify for one free from the NHS.

Pregnant women and children in primary school years one and two are also eligible. The call from local GP Practices comes just as the NHS prepares to launch a major new health campaign called Stay Well This Winter.

The very first message of this new campaign will be about flu:

“Don’t put it off. Take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can”

GPs and nurses at your local medical practice are geared up to vaccinate patients over the coming weeks. Many have arranged special flu vaccination sessions.

Jackie Schneider, nurse member of the Governing Body at NHS North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and its Head of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality, said “Dedicated ‘flu clinics are run by almost all GP practices up and down the country. If you book a slot at a special clinic, you can ensure you get the vaccine early and have the maximum benefit through the autumn and winter months”

“We strongly urge everyone who meets the NHS eligibility criteria to ring their GP Practice and make sure they get vaccinated promptly.”

The clinics – as experienced patients will know – are usually very busy and well co-ordinated affairs. Teams of doctors and nurses are on hand to vaccinate a patient every two minutes or so.

The flu jab for adults – and nasal sprays for children – can be a lifesaver. It is safe and it cannot give you flu, because it does not contain live viruses.

Flu is not like a bad cold, it is a debilitating condition which affects the whole body. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, or can make existing conditions worse. Serious cases of flu can result in being admitted to hospital, and in some instances could be fatal.

Jon Cox, Consultant from Public Health Norfolk, said “As we age our immune systems become less effective, so it is important that patients over 65 take advantage of the flu jab.

“It’s also important that pregnant

mums, people with underlying long-term health problems and young children have the vaccine because they are more vulnerable to serious illness if they catch flu.

“The vaccine is the best possible protection against the flu virus. Even if you have had the vaccination before, because the type of virus in circulation changes every year, it is important that you get the jab every winter.

University record at Paston Sixth Form College

Paston Sixth Form College has had a record year, with more students than ever starting University courses this Autumn.

It has placed 60% of its students at University, beating the 2010/11 cohort, when 59% were placed. To add to the record, 21% of the students are starting at Russell Group Universities this year. This includes a record six students who gained places at Oxbridge.

There have been a number of factors contributing to the record. The outstanding A level results, with 49% achieving A* -B top grades and 75% A*-C grades, helped students secure their offers. All staff worked hard encouraging students to be more ambitious and have high aspirations. A poster campaign in classrooms and additional HE sessions throughout the year paid off. Paston’s specialist tutors and HE mentors worked with students on the fine details of their applications and personal statements, providing support throughout the process. Finally students were encouraged by a number of ex Paston students, who gave up their time on presentations in College, promoting the benefits of a University education, leading to a range of careers. Despite all the negativity

publicity surrounding fees and graduate employment in the media, it is pleasing that Paston students can see the long term career and financial benefits of going to University.

Overall in the country University entrants passed 500,000 last year with 1.7 million offers made, this is likely to have increased this Autumn. The economic recovery is also significantly boosting the graduate jobs market.

North Walsham & District Historical Society

North Walsham & District Historical Society With the huge on-going success of “Who Do You Think You Are?” it was understandable that our speaker, family historian and writer Gill Blanchard, kept us enthralled at our recent meeting.

First of all she outlined the various resources available to a budding family historian. In this county, these range from the Norfolk Record Office, Heritage Centre, Norfolk Family History Society, museums and libraries. Nationally they include the National Archives at Kew, the General Records Office and the British Newspaper Archive.

Certificates of births, marriages and deaths (issued since 1837) can provide a wealth of information such as parents’ names, fathers’ names and occupations of a marrying couple, cause of death and details and address of informant. They are the central stepping stones in any successful family history search. Census returns, accessed through such sites as ancestry.co.uk and findmypast.com, are now

Gold for two North Walsham gymnasts at Norfolk Championships

On Sunday 27 September, North Walsham Gymnastics Club entered 16 gymnasts into the Norfolk County competition held at Easton gymnastics club, winning two gold and two bronze medals. This is a new facility and none of the gymnasts had been on the equipment before the competition - many of the other competitors also train for longer hours in purpose build gymnastic halls.

In level 5 Olivia Shingles, aged 9, put in a polished performance scoring high on all apparatus, to be crowned Norfolk Champion in her age group. With the highest total score at this level in all age groups, she also won the overall trophy to add to the gold medal. Further

Spooky sports and outdoor fun for October half term

Hot on the heels of a hugely successful summer holiday activity programme at its Community Sports Centres and award-winning country parks, North Norfolk District Council is launching its latest offering of activities to keep children entertained and active during the October half term break.

Between Monday 26 October and Friday 30 October, children from 5 to 12 will be able to enjoy a wide variety of different sports and activities at NNDC’s Community Sports Centres in Cromer and North Walsham. As always, there is plenty on offer, with activities ranging from archery to football and dodgeball to trampolining. The great value, fun packed week culminates with a Halloween themed roller disco on Saturday 31 October; prizes are up for grabs for the spookiest costume!

Outdoor fun is offered, whatever the weather, at Green Flag award winning Holt Country Park and Bacton Wood. Join NNDC’s countryside rangers for a frightfully fun Halloween trail through the woods or hunt for fungi with local expert, Tony Leach.

A special October half term brochure has been distributed to nearly 50 schools in north Norfolk and should be appearing in book bags across the district very soon. It is also available online at www.northnorfolk.org/sports and at Cromer and North Walsham Community Sports Centre.

For the first time, bookings for the Community Sports Centre activities can be made online. Visit www.northnorfolk.org/book to book your place today! No need to book countryside events, just turn up. Follow us @NorthNorfolkDC @CromerSports and @WalshamSports for regular updates.

success came in level 5 by Amy Mann, age 14, who put in solid routines with confidence to also claim the gold medal.

Head coach Alexis Thurston was so proud to have not one but two Norfolk Champions – ‘their performances were amazing and thoroughly deserved after all their hard work and dedication in the gym’ she said. ‘The whole day was incredible and I am so proud of Olivia, Amy and all the other girls who competed’.

Further success came from Rosie Bolton in level 7. Competing in a large field she held her nerve to clinch the bronze. Layla Terry also claimed a bronze medal in level 6 to complete a successful day for the club. Olivia Shingles on the left, Amy Mann on the right with Alexis Thurston centre.

Older People’s Day 2015

Fun and Finger Food were the words on everyone’s lips at Sheringham Community centre in October. Age was again proven to be just a number as everyone at Age Concern North Norfolk helped celebrate Older People’s Day. Activities, cake and song and dance were en-

joyed by an attendance of nearly a 100 people, of various ages. The event was free to attend and there were information stands to help allow people access to, and have knowledge of, local services that can help them in later life. These stands included Ben’s Workforce, North Norfolk Community Transport, Age Concern North Norfolk Day Centre and the North Norfolk District Council’s Care and Repair Team. As well as this there was plenty of advice on hand in the form of The Older People’s Forum, Age UK Norfolk, a Community Support Officer from the Police and the Coordinator of the scheme Be Ready for It. A volunteer for North Norfolk Stories was also on hand to introduce, and to encourage contributors, to their Oral History project, which takes audio recordings of memories from people who have lived and 10

worked in the area so they can put them towards an exhibition starting in the New Year.

It was an inspiring event to be a part of and to see that a part of our society all too easily overlooked, and dismissed, had a voice of their own. All who attended were as strong and full of life, with a drive to succeed and determination to live life to the full, as they were (in some cases) 80 years previously - putting many of the younger generations to shame (especially on the dance floor) and proving once again that age need not be a barrier to a happy later life when given the support, encouragement and understanding of their younger peers.

A further aim of the event was to help highlight the isolation and loneliness that has been an increasing part of living longer and the ways in which we can, together, combat that. Our overall aim, ideally, would be to also reach those people from rural areas who could not otherwise access such events and local services.

Organisations such as the Sheringham library and our Age Concern North Norfolk’s own Computer Support Group are two such schemes that aim to help lessen that isolation and general anxiety and they were both well attended during the event.

Age Concern North Norfolk Befriending scheme, funded by the National Lottery, also had many requests for a volunteer to

pay them, or a loved one, a visit. There was a lot of interest in volunteering as a befriender, where we arrange for a volunteer to visit an elderly person in their own ome, whether it be for a chat or just a nice cuppa. We are always on the lookout for New Volunteers (Much Needed) across the whole of North Norfolk to help reduce loneliness amongst the elderly and if you are interested in learning more then we would love to hear from you, please just call 01263 823126 for more information. As well as this there was gentle exercise with Mary Russell, of the Older People’s Forum, a local illustrator Eyizera Phoenix offering suport (and sweets) and even a chance for a hand or foot massage, which, not surprisingly, was extremely popular, with Erica, who also kindly signposted the session onto a local bereavement support group at the Salvation Army in Sheringham.

Age Concern North Norfolk would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended, including the local organisations who came with their information stands as well as all the wonderful volunteers who helped make the teas and cakes and sold raffle tickets on the day. Over £100 was raised in various guises throughout for good causes.

If you would like to find out more about any of the above, including how to become a befriender please call Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 823126

Millfield’s Success Leads the Way!

For the pupils of Millfield Primary School in North Walsham never have truer words been spoken. Every year Millfield leads the way in success whether in academia, sports or being part of successful pilot schemes such as the ‘Classics for All’ Latin programme.

The children celebrated the end of the academic year with great SATS results. Overall the results were in line or above the National Average in every aspect of Key Stage 2, with 20/24 measures being above. Many of the results were well above, particularly the percentage of children achieving higher level 5 in Reading, Writing, Maths, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. The results show the continued upward trend over the last three years.

On returning to school this year and flush with success, the children were ecstatic to learn that they had been awarded another three 14

IPSWICH LIVERPOOL MANCHESTER NEWCASTLE OXFORD PORTSMOUTH READING SHEFFIELD YORK

awards over the summer.

The first of which, was gaining the prestigious British Council International School Award. Within the congratulatory letter from the council they stated ‘Your plans for sustaining your international journey show that the global dimension is now firmly embedded in your school ethos. It would be excellent other schools to follow your example and engage more closely with internationalism.’

Millfield also received a 4 Star rating of excellence from schoolguide.co.uk which works with one of the main web search pages for buying properties in Norfolk.

Their last accolade was achieving the Bronze Award from the Sainsbury School Games Team and always looking onwards and upwards the school feels confident they will attain the silver soon. North Walsham Times 481 October 24th 2015

NORTH WALSHAM TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL NEWSLETTER 2015

Greetings from the Town Mayor It is with great pleasure that I write this greeting to you. Thank you for the opportunity to 'sing the praises' of our fabulous market town, the largest in North Norfolk. As I am sure you are aware this town has an amazing history dating from Anglo-Saxon times. Along with Worstead, it became famous for textiles in the 12th Century and our Parish church of St Nicholas was built from this textile wealth. St Nicholas Church, famous for its ruined tower, which was secured only this year, also houses artefacts such as medieval painted screens and a telescopic gothic font. North Walsham was also involved in the Peasant's Revolt of 1381 and there is a wayside stone near the water tower commemorating the ensuing Battle of North Walsham. North Walsham also has historical links to Lord Horatio Nelson and Sir William Paston through our wonderful Paston College. Today it has many current attractions such as The Motorcycle Museum, Davenport's Magical Kingdom, Victory Swimming Pool and Gym, Rossi's to name but a few. We also have wonderful volunteers and support groups who make our town a better place to live in such as North Walsham in Bloom, making our town beautiful, Heritage Groups, keeping our history alive, Arts North Norfolk, keeping us informed and entertained and many many more. North Walsham also has many fabulous small businesses who support our town and 'go that extra mile' alongside the 'big boys' like Lidl, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Roy's, QD etc.

For the future, we as a Town Council and this year myself as Town Mayor, have been trying to raise North Walsham's profile both locally and further afield by organising end of month Sunday Markets with entertainment supported by our businesses and community. The festival with walking procession was well attended and we are hoping to do more of this using our local assets such as the Memorial Park but not forgetting the fabulous work of our Town Councillors and volunteers who give give up their precious time for our wonderful Fun Day and Christmas Lights Markets. I think with public support and will North Walsham can rise again as it did after The Great Fire in 1600.

Annual Report Some of the highlights in North Walsham over the past 12 months have been:

JD Wetherspoon: NNDC and JD Wetherspoon have agreed in principal the sale of the current Council Offices. The Town Council continues its search for new premises, and is working closely with North Norfolk District Council to ensure that appropriate facilities continue to be available.

Sunday Markets: Beginning in January 2015, a trial run of artisan/farmers’ markets opened in Market Place on the final Sunday of each month. The Council subsequently approved the continuation of these successful events, and this will continue in 2016. The income from stall fees is split equally between local charities and projects through which the Council supports the markets.

Council Tax: The Town Council was able to keep its Council Tax precept to an amount only slightly higher than the previous year. The primary reasons for the small increase are the likely increase to accommodation costs and further contributions towards Highways improvements through a successful bid to the County Council’s Parish Partnership Scheme to fund 50% of the costs of three projects – the installation of a trod footpath along Bacton Road leading towards the town centre from The Shires; a third SAM2 movable speed awareness sign; and 20mph flashing ‘wig wag’ signs for installation in the vicinity of North Walsham High School. The Town Council again received a support grant from the District Council, helping to keep the increase 1

to a minimum. Of course, the Town Council could have said “no” to any increase in Council Tax, but then we would not have been able to support projects that are vital to the town and community. St Nicholas Court: Responsibility for the common land at St Nicholas Court precinct remains unresolved. However, NNDC has completed a compulsory purchase on the 4 Market Street site, with the area to be landscaped to allow clear views of the Church Tower. Work is due to commence in the near future.

Woodville Park: One of three parks owned by the Town Council, Woodville has suffered from a lack of investment in comparison to the other three. Following an approach from residents, the Council agreed to put £5,000 from its Reserve Fund towards investing in upgraded facilities at Woodville, and we have just been advised that North Norfolk District Council’s Big Society Fund will be investing a similar sum in some items specifically designed to be accessible to those with disabilities. Christmas Lights and Fun Day: Thanks once again to the Christmas Lights Group for their sterling work through the year to ensure that the town is prepared and lit for Christmas, and to the local businesses who continue to support their work. Thanks also to the Fun Day Committee for continuing to organise the annual event in the War Memorial Park. Dates for your diaries: Christmas Street Fair and Switch-On – Saturday 28 November 2015 Civic Service – Sunday 7 June 2015 Fun Day – Sunday 26 June 2016 Fun Fair 2016 – tbc Christmas Market – Sunday 20 December 2015 (100% of stall fees to Town Mayor’s Annual Charity) Sunday markets continue on the last Sunday of each month. INFORMATION OFFICE – No 1, Market Place, North Walsham Open: Easter to October 9:30am – 2:30pm Monday to Friday, Saturday 9:30am, - 12:30pm November to March 9:30am – 12:30pm The Information Office is staffed by volunteers who give their time freely to help visitors and residents alike to find local attractions and services, with a wide range of leaflets as well as internet to complement their extensive local knowledge. During the summer, the Information Office moved from the Council Offices to be integrated with the Arts North Norfolk office at No 1 Market Place. The Town Council will contribute towards the ongoing costs of the Information Office, and will retain a continuing oversight role.

MEMORIAL PARK TENNIS COURTS – War Memorial Park, North Walsham The courts are available for hire during the summer period from the Council Offices on Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 2:30pm and from the Sports Centre, Spenser Avenue on weekdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and weekends between 9:00am and 8:00pm. For more information including hire fees, please contact the Council Offices. The courts are used by the North Walsham Park Tennis Club, which welcomes new members and runs regular junior coaching sessions. For further information contact Richard on 01692 403640.

NEECH LOAN FUND: This Fund supports local people aged between the ages of 21 and 45 years to start up or expand in business within 10 miles of North Walsham. The Fund can provide loans of up to £5,000 at 5% interest for a period of five years, and is able to make grants to charities of up to £500 for capital projects in any one year. For further information, contact the Town Clerk, who also acts as Clerk to the Neech Loan Fund. 2

Norman Lamb speaks to Paston students about mental health

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb says he wants Britain to be a world leader in providing care and support for those dealing with mental health issues.

Speaking to students at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, Mr Lamb said "It was great to have the opportunity to talk about the importance of investment in mental health services. It is brilliant that the students wanted to raise this. The moral and the economic case for investment in mental health is overwhelming. It is morally wrong and economically stupid Norman Lamb to neglect mental health. It is estimated that speaking at Paston mental ill health costs the economy up to College last month £100bn a year. The impact on families is incalculable. I want this country to lead the world in understanding the importance of giving people speedy access to care and support and in accepting the case for equality for those suffering mental ill health.

Norman Lamb calls on District Council to offer low-cost energy deal to North Norfolk residents

Norman Lamb is urging North Norfolk District Council to help bring about real savings for local residents on their energy bills.

Recent media coverage has revealed that a number of councils across the country are now offering gas and electricity to the public – in a direct challenge to the big six energy companies. Norman Lamb is keen for North Norfolk District Council to get in on the act.

The savings are made possible by local councils using their buying power to negotiate competitive arrangements with energy companies, and it is estimated that savings of £250 per year can be made on a household bill.

One such deal, negotiated by Southend Council, also includes a guarantee that 33% of electricity will come from ‘green’ sources. They are also able to offer a 100% green option for customers who are happy to pay a little bit more.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said ‘It would be really brilliant if North Norfolk District Council could adopt this innovative approach being taken by a number of councils around the country. I am conscious that the potential savings on offer are quite significant. Many households could really do with a reduction in their energy bills of this sort.’

Commenting, Eric Seward (Liberal Democrat District Councillor) said ‘This is certainly something that the District Council should be looking at. I know that Norman has encouraged the Chief Executive of the Council to follow the lead of these pioneering councils. The Liberal Democrat group are absolutely in favour of the Council helping to reduce people’s energy bills and particularly on using green energy sources. We will continue to make the case to the Conservative administration that they should learn from other progressive councils and do something which could clearly benefit a great number of North Norfolk residents.’

Norman Lamb is also running a survey to find out how many people might be interested in such a scheme if it were to be offered by the District Council. To make your voice heard go to normanlamb.org.uk/energydeal

10th anniversary Aylsham Food Festival a great success From jugglers to cookery demonstrations and Kids Cooking Workshops to chocolate making, this year’s Aylsham Food Festival, organised by Slow Food Aylsham, was sure to provide something for Norfolk foodies!

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Festival started on Wednesday 30 September with a talk in the library about Norwich’s chocolate history plus a Harvest Lunch in Aylsham’ parish church which also played host to the next two days of Kids Cooking Workshops. Children from the Aylsham Cluster’s primary schools were tasked with making a fresh fruit sponge to take home and this was baked off at the town’s Co-op store. The Co-op also kindly supplied most of the ingredients for these events which proved very popular with the youngsters.

Steve Norgate, head chef at the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham. Helping ‘front of house’ was Adam Fields from the Dales Country House Hotel in Upper Sheringham.

The proceeds of a raffle held during the evening, plus a donation from ticket sales, allowed Slow Food Aylsham to make a donation of over £700 to the Liz Jones Memorial Fund for Children, set up last year in memory of one of the founders of the organisation.

Friday morning featured Aylsham Country Market where samples of the Market’s many products were available to taste.

Friday evening saw the traditional Food Festival Gala Dinner at Aylsham High School. Over 110 guests sat down to a splendid 5-course meal which was sourced, prepared, cooked and served by students, led by their Catering Captain Molly Bowyer. Attracting large numbers of visitors to the town, it featured a wide range of events, from a cookery demonstration kitchen with six top Norfolk chefs, to family cooking workshops, chocolate making, sugar craft and apple pressing. Lighthearted entertainment was provided by Gordon Blur, the juggling chef and Aylsham’s One Foot in the Groove jazz band. Most of these activities were in the Market Place and Town Hall which also hosted the FARMA-accredited Farmers Market.

Aylsham’s Heritage Centre was the venue for a wine tasting on Saturday evening while the following morning saw the traditional finale to Aylsham Food Festival, the Big Slow Breakfast. Some 70 diners sat down to a ‘Full English’, prepared and cooked by members of Slow Food Aylsham and friends who, once the last guest had departed, treated themselves to brunch with what was left.

Aylsham Food Festival has, in its 10-year history, evolved to become one of the town’s most important annual events. Chairman of Slow Food Aylsham, Roger Willis, summed it up: “We are very proud to be able to present such a popular event which is designed to appeal to the whole community. Our members work extremely hard to make sure everything runs smoothly and this year has been another tribute to their efforts. Roll on 2016!”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several of our older cats have recently been re-homed with people who have taken into consideration their own ages and the age of the cats in question. Mange Tout, is now happily settled and is enjoying having extra space, which provides him with more opportunities to exercise to help him lose weight. He has also been registered with his new vet, his medical history has been transferred to them and he will be going to see one of the nurses there for regular weight checks, which are free. Pickles, whose e-photo we featured last time, has also left for her new home, together with her sister, Penelope. They came into care because their owner moved and could not take them with her, so it was essential that we made sure their future was assured so that they will not need to come into care again.

We often receive requests for help with feral colonies and although we are happy to loan out our traps and pay for the cats to be neutered, due to other pressures on our time, we cannot normally help with the actual trapping. When dealing with colonies, it is essential the person who has the problem co-operates with us and that all the cats are caught and neutered. If not, the problem will continue and time and money will have been wasted. With the help of a neighbour, we are at present dealing with one such colony, which has been an ongoing problem for several years. We have in the past had several cats there neutered and taken in quite a few kittens. At present we

In a nutshell, dogs can pick up lungworm when they eat slugs or snails, the parasite then migrates through the body to the dog’s lungs where it can cause serious disease. Commonly this is seen as lethargy, inability to exercise, laboured breathing and coughing, but it can appear more subtly and cause bleeding disorders, high temperatures and non-specific signs of illness.

Last month we diagnosed the first case of this increasingly prevalent disease in our area. For those of you who aren’t aware, canine Lungworm is a parasite which can be picked up from slugs or snails and can potentially be life threatening. In fact, the case we had in at Westover had deteriorated rapidly in only a couple of weeks and given the degree of changes evident on x-rays would probably not have survived for much longer without treatment.

feel optimistic that, this time, all the adult cats will be caught (the neighbour had not realised the extent of the problem) and at the time of writing we have taken in 16 kittens from the site. Although some of them were quite young and friendly on arrival, others have needed socialising. Four of the friendliest ones have been moved to another fosterer and remarkable progress has been made with the others, some of which are also now available for adoption. We are confident that they will soon all be ready to leave us. Life would have been so much easier if the owner of the site had been more co-operative.

BED MAX

Our lungworm patient is a German Pointer named Otto. We are well acquainted with Otto at Westover as he has soldiered on through a serious skin condition and some nasty injuries sustained from a car in the past as well. Most recently he presented to us having suddenly become lethargic and unable to exercise as normal. The rapid progression to severe lethargy led us to admit him for x-rays and bronchoscopy. The latter procedure involves introducing a tiny camera into his airways through which were able to take samples and actually found lungworm larvae themselves. This meant we were able to start treatment immediately and his owner noticed a remarkable improvement within 48 hours. A month on and he is now back to normal and even brighter than before as the disease had probably been making him unwell for some time.

Lungworm is still uncommon in Norfolk, but becoming ever more prevalent. Prevention is straight forward using a specific type of flea and worm treatment available from most veterinary practices. If you would like any more information on lungworm or its prevention feel free to drop us a line and we would be happy to help.

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN LOCAL TOURISM?

Do you provide B & B or Self-catering accommodation? Do you have a cafe or restaurant? Do you sell mementoes? Do you run attractions or provide services?

Volunteers produce an annual B & B and Self-catering Guide for North-East Norfolk and the North Walsham Area. The Guide also invites advertising from those providing other services used by visitors. Up to 2,500 copies are distributed widely via advice centres in Cromer, Mundesley and North Walsham, through libraries, at the attractions, village shops and so on. The Guide is also popular with local people needing accommodation for family events. Because it is produced by

volunteers, (supported by North Walsham Town council), advertising rates are low: £40 for accommodation providers, and £40 or more for other advertisers according to the space required. The 2016 edition is now being prepared. If interested, or if you would like to see a 2015 copy, please phone 01692 404114 between 9.30am. and 12.30pm or email us at admin@northwalsham-town.co.uk Entries are required by early November.

Sunday Markets As some readers will be aware, income from the Sunday Markets is split 50-50 between market costs and a donation to a local charity. Following the first such donation to Millfield Pre School, the Town Council agreed to adopt the theme of education for the remainder of this year, and is therefore seeking applications

from local groups/charities involved in this field. Further details on how to apply are available from the Town Clerk.

In early September, the Council received the excellent news that the North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund has agreed to slightly more than match its own contribution to the Woodville play equipment project, by offering funding for three specific items with a particular focus on accessibility for the disabled. Although the search for further funding continues, the Council is now in a position to start work on adding to the very limited facilities currently available for children at this park. The clean up began on Sunday 4 October with volunteers Sue and Becky Richardson, George Blackburn, Jack Pearson, Chris Hicks, Andrew Brown, Audrey Haynes, Tony Wiles, Andy Creasy and Micky Gotts on parade. Print Show with H.J. Jackson Showcase, Book Signing, and Demonstration Saturday 24 to Saturday 31 October at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea

H.J. Jackson – highly collected and hugely popular Norfolk print artist - celebrates the release of his new book Afloat and Ashore with a showcase exhibition at Gallery Plus in Wells-next-the-Sea. When H.J. Jackson produced his first handprinted linocut in his last year at school, he had no way of knowing that over 60 years later he would still be printmaking. This small single-colour print of a galleon in full sail was instrumental in helping H.J. Jackson – John to his friends – to obtain a place at the Norwich School of Art the following year. It was also directly responsible for him pursuing linocutting as a craft as part of the National Diploma in Graphic Design. It was while at the School of Art that John became interested in coastal themes, stimulated by visits to Sheringham, Cromer and to the fishwharf at Great Yarmouth during the annual visits by the Scottish Fishing Fleet. By the end of the 1950s, however, his interest was taken up with the closure of the local Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, where his father, grandfather, and other family members had all worked and the clearance of large areas of Victorian Norwich.

On leaving Art School, John lost the use of the print-room equipment and although he could purchase tools, lino and ink, he realised he would have to dispense with the services of a printing

press. After experimenting, he finally settled on a ‘tobacco tin’ as the ideal burnishing tool – a method he still employs today. After working for over 30 years in marketing and publicity, printmaking during evenings and weekends, John was able to pursue linocutting ‘full time’ in 1995.

Now a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a Member of the Society of Wood Engravers, H.J. Jackson has perfected his craft. Working from photographic reference, John produces a drawing to the size of the proposed print. He then plans the number of lino blocks needed, some printing more than one colour. The drawing is photocopied onto tracing paper, reversed and transferred using carbon onto the lino. With drawing ink, he identifies the areas to be retained before cutting using only two tools: a V tool and a small gauge. The different blocks are printed using oil based inks and pin-hole registration. The printing is carried out entirely by hand burnishing using the tobacco tin.

The declining fishing industry features strongly in John’s work, and he likes his boats to look as if they have been to sea. The multiple layers of ink result in a ‘treacly’ appearance, which helps to gives them the look of working vessels.

To mark the release of his new book ‘Afloat and Ashore’, H.J. Jackson will be exhibiting a showcase of his recent linocuts, including his much-loved images of Norfolk boats, at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea.

HJ Jackson’s new book ‘Afloat & Ashore’

The exhibition, which will also include work by other Gallery Plus print artists, opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 24 October – all welcome to join us for a glass of Prosecco and continues daily until Saturday 31 October. Open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm, plus Sunday 25 October 11am-4pm.

John will be in attendance at the preview to sign copies of his book and will be available to chat to about his work and history in the industry. He will also be demonstrating his linocutting techniques during two sessions - morning and afternoon - on the preview day.

North Walsham Table Tennis Thaxter Battles Back to Beat Baldock-Yaxley

After the opening fortnight of Cup matches, the League itself is now under way. In the Premier Division following a close 6-4 win against Backhanders, NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane hosted Gresham School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Colin Humphries at Antingham Village Hall. Thaxter’s angles consistently wrong-footed Vaughan as he won the opener in straight before Bennell’s rapid fire blocks negated Baldock-Yaxley’s opening strokes and quickly gave him the advantage as he took a 14-12, 11-8, 11-9 win. Humphries made it 3-0 to the visitors with a strange 11-8, 16-14, 5-11, 8-11, 11-6 win against Beane before the repeat of this year’s North Norfolk final saw both Thaxter and Baldock-Yaxley play at their best. The NWSCA player won the first two sets 11-6, 11-7 but Thaxter battled back to win the next three 11-8, 11-6, 11-2. Bennell’s win in three against Beane was sandwiched in the middle of straight sets wins for both Vaughan and Baldock-Yaxley against Humphries. Thaxter then beat Beane in four before Bennell won a fun five-setter in the last singles which saw some awesome shots played by Vaughan. Baldock-Yaxley and Beane won the doubles in four against Thaxter and Bennell, but Gresham’s won a good spirited match 7-3.
