LUCKY NORTH WALSHAM WOMAN SCOOPS TOP PRIZE IN QD STORES’ 30th BIRTHDAY DRAW Continued from front cover...
with thousands of entries coming in as we celebrated our 30th birthday. We have so many loyal customers at all our stores and we were delighted that they could share in our celebrations. We all wish Linda many years of happy motoring in her new Mini.”
The QD Group, which also owns Lathams of Potter Heigham, Cherry Lane Garden Centres and Thing-Me-Bobs as well as QD Stores, opened its first store 30 years ago, and has been celebrating all through September with special offers and the prize draw competition.
A delighted Mrs McQuattie said “I am absolutely stunned and incredulous. I haven’t stopped laughing since I heard about my win.”
She was on a spa holiday at Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire when she heard about her surprise success. “I thought the whole thing was a hoax, and so did my family. But I thought I would check out the phone number and the address the email had come from and I found out it was completely genuine.
“I never enter competitions but I was in QD in North Walsham and had a bit of spare time. The competition was so easy to enter and didn’t ask lots and lots of questions so I entered and thought, well somebody’s got to win, but it won’t be me.
“I’ve just arranged the insurance and I was asked what the value of the car was and how much I paid for it. I told them that technically the car was free, but I did spend £4.90 in the shop! The first thing I’m going to do is take the car home and sit in the drive and press all the buttons.”
QD Stores’ chief executive, Nick Rubins, who himself has worked for the company, founded by his father, since it was started in 1985, said: “We’re all very pleased indeed for Linda and so happy that she won our top prize.
“We had a fantastic response from our customers across all our stores

Mrs McQuattie, who was originally from Glasgow before moving to Norfolk 34 years ago, is a regular shopper at QD. “I buy lots of everyday things from QD: they’re so much cheaper than the supermarkets.”
Last week, lucky QD employee, Jill Fisk, who lives in Worlingham, near Beccles, and works at QD Stores owned Cherry Lane Early Dawn Nurseries and Garden Centre in Carlton Colville, near Lowestoft won the QD staff prize draw, when her name was pulled out of the hat to win £3000.
Tai Chi Energies Seminar
Julian Wilde, senior instructor of the Norwich Fei-Yan Chen Taiji and Qigong School, recently held a seminar on The Eight Energies of Tai Chi at the Belvedere Centre in Norwich.
The seminar was well-attended and enjoyed by students from classes in Aylsham, North Walsham and Norwich. All gained a deeper understanding of the eight energies, or properties of movements in Tai Chi which improve health, posture, rooting, co-ordination, balance and spacial awareness.
‘Movement and energy, both internally with the mind and Tai Chi students with instructor externally with the Sifu Julian Wilde (5th from left) body create a flow, seamless and tension free, where intentions ebb and flow without effort,’ Julian said.
Everyone worked hard to become ‘effortless’ - and left feeling relaxed and uplifted with a deeper knowledge of Tai Chi.

a beautiful Tarte Tatin for us all to enjoy.
Apple Tarte Tatin
Do come in and see us for the best apples in Cromer – and, of course, don’t forget to book your Christmas Party here too!
Apples are a big part of life here at the Grove. Every spring an (un)willing volunteer is led to the orchard and sent skywards armed with secateurs and definitely a safety harness to lop off the new growth, a precarious business but essential for the good maintenance of the trees. They sit and happily blossom and in the autumn produce the most amazing apples – eaters and cookers – as well as an assortment of plums and pears. We are very lucky to have them and they are very much the apple of the Senior Estate Manager’s eye.
Of course they feature heavily on the menu every year and, occasionally, the kitchen will break into classic French and knock up
Ingredients • 4 apples • 50g of butter, soft • 50g of caster sugar • 375g of puff pastry
Method 1. Cut the apples in half, peel, core and turn to an even, rounded size.
2. Place the butter in a tarte Tatin pan (or oven-proof frying pan) and press it out to cover the bottom. Sprinkle with the sugar and set aside. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4.
3. Place the pan on the stove, and melt the butter and sugar together until they start to brown. This should take approximately 10 minutes.
Reward £20 for return of opal blue flower shaped pendant and Pastimes Japanese girl with umbrella brooch lost Park Avenue/Pound Road area of North Walsham sentimental value. Please telephone 01692 402889
North Walsham Times 482 November 7th 2015
4. Roll the puff pastry out to fit the tarte Tatin pan and until it is around 3mm in thickness. Place 7 pieces of apple, cut side up, around the pan containing the butter and sugar mixture, placing 1 in the centre. Cover with the pastry disc and tuck the edges in.
5. Finish cooking the tarte in the oven for 50– 60 minutes. Remove and leave to rest a little, then turn the Tatin out by placing a plate upside down over the entire pan and flipping the whole thing over.

Celebrating Success
About with Friends are celebrating 18 months of success with their ‘Clubs with Friends’ programme.
The programme has allowed young people between the ages of 13 and 25 to become involved with some mainstream clubs and work placements in their local area. Fourteen young people were successfully placed in provision suited to their own interests and supported to settle in, for example attending local youth clubs, bowling groups, social activities, work placements and more. Several others have since been signposted towards suitable provisions now the funding has finished.
About with Friends would like to say a special thank you to Wroxham Barns, who allowed a work placement to take place on the farm throughout the summer. This particular placement was a big success for a young man called Jai, who has ASD, learning difficulties and a special interest in animal care. His time on the farm allowed him to gain knowledge

of how to care for the animals, as well as spending time interacting with staff and members of the public. The work placement and support gave Jai a big confidence boost, and he fulfilled something he initially said he wouldn’t be able to do, because of his difficulties in many social situations.
Eileen Calverley, Junior Farm Manager at Wroxham Barns backed up the success of the service and added “We support About with Friends because of the difference it can make to young people’s lives. Animals are a wonderful therapy and provide joy and stimulation to a wide range of people. Jai always had a lovely smile and infectious giggle when he was here and we are glad to have given him the opportunity”.

Soldiers, Shields and Smiles!
The new academic year saw Millfield Primary’s Year 6 Latin group off to a flying start with a new themed based project about Roman Military life.
The group had just completed the chapter ‘The Military Machine’ from the ‘Minimus’ Latin Book and was set an art project to either design, draw or make something which could be displayed. As ever the children were more than eager to display their talents for the school to appreciate. The pieces ranged from a three feet tall authentic looking Roman shield complete with design (made by Jacob Barnes), amazing and creative art work, which included the different types of weaponry. There was armour carefully designed from cardboard and transformed into realistic looking shields, helmets and a four feet long Pilum (Javelin) which had been carefully and painstakingly crafted by Chloe Knight. The most interactive and short lived design was Issy Rushen’s which was shared among the group - it was a delicious chocolate cake in the shape of a shield, which tasted as good as it looked - it didn’t make it to the display table!
Millfield was also pleased and proud to hear that The Mayor of London; Boris Johnson congratulated the schools in North Norfolk who had been part of the Pilot scheme ‘Classics for All’. Mrs Price, who teaches Latin to a group of year 5 and 6 children, said “It was lovely to see Jane Maguire honoured at the ceremony. Through her training and hard work, she not only showed me a love for Latin but enabled me to cascade that down to the pupils I have taught over the last few years - some of whom loved the project so much they have taken GCSE Latin at High School.”
Launching
‘Millfield Madness’
Pupils from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham launched their first edition of ‘Millfield Madness’ last month.
The newly formed committee for the school magazine spent their lunchtimes putting together a well thought out and novel magazine. Their first edition, which was Halloween themed, was filled with trivia, puzzles, tasty Halloween recipes, competitions and an Agony Aunt’s page called ‘Secret Sisters.’
One of the magazine’s reporters, Molly Walker, interviewed the Head Teacher, Mrs Harazdiuk and found out some very interesting and funny facts. These included her fear of spiders, that she would rather eat chocolate covered bugs than snails in custard and that she was naughty as a child!

Speakers Club President visits North Carolina Club
FREE
President of North Norfolk Speakers Club, Stuart Richards, recently visited Asheville Speakers Club in North Carolina.
VALUATION
Both clubs are part of Toastmasters International, which has 14,650 clubs worldwide and since 1925 has been helping people from all walks of life to gain confidence in speaking and develop skills in communication and leadership.
North Norfolk Speakers Club President Stuart Richards (left) visits Asheville Speakers Club in North Carolina ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my visit’, said Stuart. ‘I was informed that dress code was very casual and it can be daunting visiting another club, especially wearing shorts! I was quickly put at ease by the warmth of the hospitality I received and as members of Toastmasters there was common ground and shared experience- like visiting an extended family. I had a lot of fun, learned more about improvised speaking and left with new ideas to bring back to my own club.’
To develop speaking and communication skills, whether at work or socially, join us at North Norfolk Speakers Club. Meetings are on alternate Wednesdays, 6.45pm at North Walsham High School, Spenser Avenue. For more information please visit www.nnsc.co.uk, email northnorfolkspeakersclub@gmail.com or tel. Gillian 01692 650250. Guests and new members are always welcome.
North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
We’ll help you stand out so more buyers come in Our expert team of property consultants will use comprehensive marketing to showcase your house to the widest audience possible. So you’ll never miss out on a potential buyer.
The September meeting took place on the 3rd with ‘Pat's Poems’, when four Committee members read favourite poems, in a variety of dialects Irish, Yorkshire etc. Jessie Mason made her annual guest appearance and amused us all with her Pam Ayers tales.
October was the Club's 70th birthday, having been formed in October 1945. One of our oldest members (Edna Ambler from Cromer) made a delicious birthday cake, which was enjoyed by everyone. The West End Waiters from Watton entertained us with their singing and anecdotes.
Anyone who is blind or partially-sighted would be very welcome to join this happy Club on the first Thursday of the month in the Community Centre.

Rock Buns & Rolling Pins
We are the ladies of Rock Buns & Rolling Pins WI in North Walsham and we celebrated our second birthday on Trafalgar Day, 21 October. With this special date in mind, we booked a speaker to appear as Nelson's great love, Lady Emma Hamilton. We also invited a dozen or so ladies from neighbouring WIs to join in our celebrations.
Picture the scene: the room was prepared - soft sofas, coffee tables decorated with handmade flowers, a delicious buffet was laid out, our guests arrived, raffle tickets were sold and we chatted and waited... and waited... and waited.
As a 'fledgling' group we had only been let down by speakers a couple of times and in advance. Tonight, unfortunately, we were not even contacted. But, as I said at the beginning, we ARE the ladies of Rock Buns & Rolling Pins WI and we had a plan! A last minute, hodge-podge, shall we - shan't we plan, but a 'small hiccup' like this in front of long standing members from other WIs didn't phase us ...!
First to take to the floor was our vice-president, Di. A stylish, softly spoken lady by night but a welly wearing, mud wading, potato sampler by day. And what a tale she had to tell. From lifting potatoes, to slicing and frying them, from checking samples visually to assessing sugar content and crunchiness. Potatoes destined for the Kettle Foods factory in Bowthorpe. To be cleaned, sliced, fried and flavoured on a massive scale. Some crops are stored at low temperatures to prevent the sugars changing and shoots forming, other crops are harvested green and used immediately while others are harvested in October and stored for use in July. A fascinating insight into Di's world away from the WI.
Next came secretary, Brenda. This was not the first time that she had stepped in when a speaker had pulled out (a belly dancer with tummy ache last time)! But, this time she had no props for her beekeeping talk. No smoker or hive tool, no bee suit with veil, no frames of honey to poke fingers into to taste the sweetness. So the tales of a novice beekeeper began with initial training at Easton College through to obtaining her first colony of bees, through the bee life cycle. (Which did come first - the mated Queen or the egg)? The poor honey harvest this year and the problems when swarms gather in awkward places. A passionate talk on a much loved and enjoyed hobby (despite the occasional sting)!
Finally our treasurer, Ann, took to the floor ( or in our case the small black stool). Her subject? Prison! A questioning look on some ladies' faces turned to interested concentration as Ann spoke about her life in the prison service. From being a prison officer to recently changing to a more administrative role within Norwich prison. Ann took us through the arrival of prisoners direct from court, through the reception and induction processes which help new prisoners adjust to life inside with other prisoners acting as mentors. Each prisoner is encouraged to work

or have further education with a focus on rehabilitation. At Norwich prison there are market gardens, a print shop, and various workshops. A big thanks to Ann for sharing her experiences.
The night was drawing to a close but there was still the excellent buffet to enjoy and the raffle to draw with some amazing prizes. As a special last minute favour, Ferdi, our president's husband, arrived, and quizzed us on national emblems, car logos and TV memories - all teams scored more points on the latter than on the former two put together!
So, although we missed Lady Hamilton and were disappointed for our guests, we like to feel that they went away with not only full tummies and some raffle prizes, but a little insight into what the ladies of a recently formed WI group get up to during the day.
North Walsham Market Cross WI
The members provided the entertainment for our October meeting. An ancient, thought provoking poem was read delightfully by Barbara. Also on offer were various quizzes, which exercised the brain together with lots of chatter.
Members were asked if they had any shaped buttons in their button boxes, which could be used for the knitted dementia aids that some of the ladies are busy making.
The Centenary dinner held at the Scarborough Hill Hotel, was very well attended by all the North Walsham WI's. Congratulations to Marianne Reid for winning the commemorative card competition with her beautiful crafted design ‘This Green and Pleasant Land’ - everybody attending were given a copy of the card as a memento.
All those attending the group meeting enjoyed a fish and chip supper and musical entertainment with David Pycroft and John Hicks, which got the toes tapping, hands clapping and dancing to music from the 50s to 80s.
Our next meeting is the Annual meeting and, with several retiring from the committee, members are asked to seriously consider being a committee member.
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month, at St Benet Hall at 7.15pm, so please come along and join our friendly group and experience what ladies over the past 100 years have been doing.

Local disaster movie for Northrepps!
ABTA ABTA No. No.91207 91207
The next film being put on by Northrepps Film Society is a true local disaster movie: Floods of East Anglia, 1912-53.
Consisting mainly of archive news footage, this vividly recalls some of the sea’s most dramatic invasions of our coast and shows the chaos caused as homes and livelihoods are swept away. As it lasts little more than an hour it will be preceded by a second, shorter film of local interest to fill out the evening. The show is on Thursday 12 November (not the first Thursday of the month, as usual) when doors at Northrepps Village Hall open at 7pm with drinks for sale until the first film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 payable at the door. We hope to see you there!

New life for the Perrott brothers
Back in 2003 at just 19 years old, Matthew founded his business ‘Matthew Perrott Carpet Cleaning.’ The business quickly grew based on local accountability, exceptional service and great results. Matthew was able to provide employment as the business built up and in 2006 Thomas came on board. He became experienced in all roles of the business and was a great asset. After Matthew scaled down the business to make room for his new family in 2009, Thomas went to work in the local Sheringham branch Post Office until the opportunity arose for him to become a full partner in the business. In 2012 ‘The Perrott Brothers’ was formed. Since then the business has seen significant growth with the addition of two new vans and new members of staff (Luke, Jamie, Vicky and Chloe). Alongside this, the Perrott brothers introduced a new form of carpet cleaning which provides even greater cleaning results and faster drying times.
Bidding a fond farewell! Matthew has held a strong Christian faith for many years and recently an opportunity to attend a course has opened up. He has taken this opportunity to spend the next year in full time study. Therefore, Matthew has decided to step down as a director of 'The Perrott Brothers Ltd'. Thomas will now be taking the lead of what has become a thriving local business.
"I would like to thank all of my customers and the local community for your support over the last 12 years. It has been a real pleasure serving and getting to know so many of you. I am very proud of the business and all it has achieved so far. I look forward to seeing it grow under Tom's leadership. The last twelve months have probably been my most challenging which has motivated me to move in a different direction, I now look forward to a new phase, where I will be exploring my deeply held beliefs." (Matthew, October 2015)
The company is putting together a leaving book for Matthew and we are welcoming our customers to write down any happy memories and/or experiences you have shared with Matthew over the years. Please feel free to either send these into Unit 29, Weybourne Road Industrial Estate, Weybourne Road, Sheringham, NR26 8AF, or by email to enquiries@newlifecleaningservices.co.uk
Thomas is now directing the company with the help of his lovely wife Vicky. With the recent changes 'The Perrott Brothers Ltd' is having a change of name to New Life Cleaning Ltd, the same services as before but with two new additions. 16

New Life Cleaning Ltd Two New Services
“Times of change could be intimidating, but I have gained a great deal of knowledge and experience working alongside Matthew over the years and know that if properly managed, they become the wind in the sail for the next adventure. I look forward to the challenge of driving the business forward. We have a new name for the business ‘New Life Cleaning Ltd’ and also two new services that we will be providing; a general house cleaning service and recommending and working alongside Hannah Ghoorahoo who provides an exceptional curtain making service. We will of course continue to bring you a professional, reliable and friendly service.” (Thomas, October 2015)

Lasers for skin health
Our treatments make your skin healthy and delay age related changes We live in an age of technological revolutions and breakthroughs. Medicine has also benefited from an explosion in technology. Lasers have completely changed the field of cosmetic dermatology.
A couple of ground breaking studies from California have shown that light-based treatments do not only make the skin appear younger, they are actually making skin healthier and delaying skin ageing. Lasers work not only at a visible level but also at a microscopic, cellular and genetic level.
Researchers analysed characteristics of treated skin by taking skin biopsies and found that of the 2265 genes whose expression was altered in aged skin, 1,293 were fully restored to the expression seen in younger skin. After three successive Broadband Light treatments, the re-expressed genes included those associated with longevity and increased life. A second blinded study showed that patients in the treated group on average had nine years younger looking skin.
Lasers can also be used very successfully to treat acne scarring, facial wrinkles and to achieve skin tightening. These procedures however may require a small amount of recovery time. These can be performed purely under local anaesthesia
For Vein care, we are now routinely able to treat conditions and achieving results which just 10 years ago would have been considered far fetched. In general there is a move away from major surgery and minimally invasive procedures and lasers are capable of achieving similar or better results with less risk of complications.
So can we see anyone with a laser? We see major advances in technology which has resulted in better and better machines becoming available, at the same time there has been proliferation of less than desirable, and sometimes dangerous technology at the lower end of the market. Not all lasers are good and there are a lot of unqualified people using these so do your research before choosing a clinic and/ or a practitioner. In worst case scenario the outcomes can be less than desirable with complications sometimes difficult or impossible to rectify. So don’t take chances and visit a well established and reputable clinic. Preferably a clinic registered with Care Quality Commission, the only regulator of health care in England.
What conditions can your lasers treat? Lasers can very successfully address a number of skin concerns either together or one at a time. This could be visible broken veins and capillaries, birth marks, acne, acne scarring, pigmentation, rosacea or facial blemishes. age spots of face, neck, chest and hands etc. Skin tags, moles and benign lumps and bumps can be vaporised in an instant, in a bloodless procedure and with minimal risk of scarring. Unwanted hair can be removed and tattoos can be faded or removed completely and leg veins can be sealed from inside in a nonsurgical way rather than having to undergo painful stripping operations. We also use lasers to tighten the tissues under the skin as can be achieved with laser liposuction and laser assisted face and neck lift surgery.

Residential Landlord and Tenant Issues Changes to terminating an Assured Shorthold Tenancy by service of a Section 21 notice Written by Amanda Nudds – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr
The Deregulation Act 2015 was passed in March this year covering various issues relating to residential landlords and tenants. From 1 October 2015, provisions will come into force protecting tenants from eviction which can have serious consequences for landlords.
A ‘Section 21’ notice is required to be served on a tenant where a landlord wishes to bring the tenancy to an end. A landlord’s ability to terminate a tenancy this way will be restricted where a tenant has complained about the condition of the property or its common parts and where the landlord either failed to respond within 14 days, has not provided an adequate response or has responded by serving a Section 21 notice.
If landlords fail to adequately respond the tenant will have the opportunity to complain to the Local Housing Authority. Not only is this likely to result in enforcement notices being served on the landlord by the local authority, but it will also prevent the landlord from serving a Section 21 notice within 6 months of
the date of service of the enforcement notice. Of course, the provisions will not apply where the condition of the property or common parts is as a result of the tenant’s breach.
Landlords should be aware that although the new provisions require the tenant’s complaint to be in writing, they will still be taken into consideration where the tenant did not have the landlord’s contact details but made reasonable effort to contact the landlord. It follows that landlords should ensure that tenants have upto-date information on how to contact them.
These provisions will apply to any assured shorthold tenancy granted on or after 1 October 2015.
There are other new provisions relating to the way tenancy deposits are managed and changes to the content of Section 21 notices. If you wish to discuss these new provisions in more detail or discuss your own landlord/tenant issues please contact Amanda on 01328 825959. For advice on any other legal matter please telephone our

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The work continues with the feral colony mentioned last time and several more of the adults have now been neutered with the help of the neighbour. However, we have now heard there are a further nine kittens to be taken into care, the first four as soon as they can be caught and the others as soon as they are old enough to leave the mother cat.
I believe most people are aware that everyone connected to the branch is a volunteer, willingly giving their time to help needy cats in our area. However, as they all also have families and some have jobs, their spare time is precious and it is very frustrating when on “cat business” this valuable time is wasted. They often change their arrangements so that someone can come to see the cats in care, as they are looking for a new companion. Having organised this, they sometimes find the person has changed their mind (or gone elsewhere) and their much valued free time has been lost. Occasionally, people will turn up earlier or later than agreed and this does cause problems, as the changes they have made to help the person concerned mean that, once again, they have to alter their own arrangements, which is not always convenient. Life would be so much easier for our volunteers (especially those that foster the cats) if people could Grooming Parlour remember this.

On a happier note, we are now finalising arrangements for our Christmas Sale on 21 November in St Benets Hall (please see What’s on Where). This year our “Crafty Ladies” have been very busy and produced lots of new items for sale. We are also including a new stall selling lots of delicious cakes, jams and pickles to tempt those who enjoy home produced goods. There are also plenty of lovely things for sale on our usual stalls, so we hope you will all come along and support the cats on the day.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

The concert on 28 November will feature Vespers by Norwich-based composer Richard Allain. Sub-titled Songs of the Sea this will be something of a coastal homecoming for this work which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus in 2011 to reflect the coastal heritage of the area. Over the summer Mr Allain has re-worked and re-orchestrated this piece especially for this north Norfolk performance. The choir will be joined by a line-up of fine soloists including soprano Rosamund Walton, mezzo soprano Evie Anderson and tenor Oliver White. The concert will also include Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis and John Adams’ Shaker Loops which will brilliantly demonstrate the active part which London Mozart Players take in contemporary music.
Thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, Orchestras Live, North Norfolk District Council and others, this concert presents a rare and wonderful opportunity to see and hear one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras in north Norfolk. Interim Shared Management Agreed
Two Norfolk district councils will share a Chief Executive and S151 Officer on an interim basis.
At North Norfolk District Council’s Full Council meeting on Wednesday 21 October, following a constructive debate, councillors unanimously agreed to the interim shared arrangement which will see Chief Executive Sheila Oxtoby shared with Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
As well as sharing the Chief Executive role North Norfolk District Council’s Section 151, Chief Finance Officer, Karen Sly, will also take up an interim shared role for Great Yarmouth.
The new interim arrangements will begin from 7 November and enable both authorities to test out the shared management approach while a business case is worked up with Elected Members from each authority on the opportunity for sharing services.
Cllr Graham Plant, Leader at Great Yarmouth Borough Council said “This is a good opportunity for Great Yarmouth to test out whether shared management can work both for ourselves and our neighbours in North Norfolk.”
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader at North Norfolk District Council added “It’s a unique chance to get first-hand experience of what it will mean in practice to share a Chief Executive and a Chief Finance Officer and will allow both authorities to be better informed about what a shared arrangement would mean in practice.”
North Walsham Town Council
The Town Council is seeking input from residents to help in its budget-setting process for 2016/17, and from this will emerge the North Walsham element of your Council Tax bills (currently £46.68 per household).
If you have any ideas or suggestions for where the Council should be looking to invest or spend money, this is an opportunity to have your views heard.
You can take the opportunity to be heard at a full Council meeting on 24 November, or at the special Precept meeting on 10 November. Alternatively, please contact either the Town Clerk at the Council Offices or one of your Ward Councillors.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
We have now finished our autumn planting and, due in part to the extremely good weather conditions, we are very pleased with the results. The other, and more important part, is our extremely committed and loyal band of helpers, without whom, of course, the flowers and displays would not exist.
One very sour note over the planting week was a large deposit of dog poo in the middle of the Church Cross display the day after it had been planted up. For anyone to let their dog do this is an insult to the ladies who spend time on their hands and knees planting these beds. On one hand, we get lots of people coming up to us and saying how much they enjoy our work, and on the other hand we get people who must really despise the work we do?
We are also getting reports of people urinating in the bed near the Church Tower during the evenings. We had often wondered why we are unable to get anything to grow there and now we know. Once again, our ladies are working on their hands and knees planting bulbs etc into the edges of this area. We had plans to re-do the bed in the spring, but perhaps we might now just grass it over. Then the offenders will use the shop doorways, etc., it seems that there is no answer to the anti social behaviour of some people. For those of us who do like to see the town in general looking good, and take a pride in our area, we are now turning our attentions to the Catholic Church bed, and hope in the near future to have this area looking its best.
NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB 135 members and visitors enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at The Atrium last month, when one of the UK's leading Floral Designers, Jonathan Moseley, demonstrated ‘Living The Dream’ in spectacular style.
Giving a little insight into his busy life demonstrating and travelling around the world on photo-shoots, TV work and hosting workshops in Chatsworth House, Le-Manoir and .. North Walsham - he certainly is living the dream! Jonathan also hosted a Christmas workshop in the Community Centre the following day. Next month's Flower Club meeting is on 26 November in The Catholic Church Hall. Jo Poulter from Peterborough is making a return visit to demonstrate six floral designs with the theme ‘Christmas Wonderland’ at 2pm for 2.30pm start.
28
Finally - David Wright and Crystal Dyball are both popular NAFAS Area Demonstrators who will jointly be putting on a Christmas Fundraising Spectacular at The Atrium Theatre on Saturday 28 November followed by seasonal refreshments and a Christmas Raffle. ‘All I Want for Christmas’ promises to be a Floral Feast of Fun - Doors will open at 12.30 pm to allow plenty of time to browse a selection of craft stalls or to try on some unique clothing from Suffolk-based Catwalk Clothes, before the show begins at 2pm. Tickets are £12.50 and available from Glenis Dillon on 01692 404628 - or if you know David or Crystal, they have tickets too. G Dillon Photos from last month's Open Meeting & Workshop

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER JOBS FOR NOVEMBER
LEAF MOULD If you have room, create a separate leaf heap rather than simply adding leaves to compost, as leaf mould is a luxury soil improver if you are growing lilies in pots. The fibrous nature of leaf mould retains moisture and enables free drainage, which means it also makes a fine mulch for woodland treasures such as trillium or wood anemone. With the first signs of winter, there are jobs to be done before putting the garden to bed. We can enjoy the last days of autumn whilst planning for the winter and next spring.
LEAVES Only collect leaves where absolutely necessary. Don’t leave them too long on the lawn or they will kill the grass underneath but where they have fallen in the beds and have not drifted too deeply, leave the earthworms to pull them into their burrows or let the leaves rot on the surface. This is not laziness but necessary to return goodness to the earth. However, where leaves have drifted deeply or are smothering smaller plants or silver Mediterranean herbs and perennials, clear to keep the plants light and airy. Sweeping leaves off paths and terraces is all you need to keep the garden looking cared for and covers up for untidiness in the rest of the garden. PERENNIAL QUESTION If you are tidy-minded, it might be difficult to leave perennial plants standing, but wait for a few weeks and you will find that many will make fine winter skeletons and can be left until February or March. The plants will also form useful homes for hibernating insects and birds will appreciate the seeds.
FROST Watch out for the first frosts. If you have not done so already, move tender plants into a cool greenhouse, frame or garage and water less to bring on a state of semi dormancy. In cold districts, tuberous - rooted cannas and dahlias should be dug up and stored in just-damp compost in a cool, airy place. In warmer areas, an ample mulch of compost or leaf mould should protect them and they can stay put.
CUTTINGS This is a good time of the year to take hardwood cuttings. As soon as the leaves have fallen, take cuttings at pencil length and pencil thickness. Make a clean cut immediately below a bud and a sloping cut above to tell top from bottom. Plunge to half their depth in compost or a trench in open ground. Vines, cornus, willow, buddleia and fig will be rooted by spring and ready for potting by mid-summer. PLANTS TO ENJOY NOW Before winter finally arrives, enjoy the plants that are still giving us late colour in the garden, the colourful foliage of the trees and shrubs and their fruit and berries, which are “We’re in your so attractive to the birds. Bob Wilkinson

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCE Battle Back to Reach Quarter-Finals
The Second round of the Knockout Doubles Cup saw Mundesley B’s Trevor Vincent, Paul Gotts and Derek Sidaway host NWSCE’s Carrie Last and Ben and James Lester at the Coronation Hall in Mundesley. Vincent and Sidaway won the opener in straight against Last and Ben Lester before the Lesters beat Gotts and Sidaway in four. The next two battles went the distance as Vincent and Gotts beat Last and James Lester before Last and Ben Lester again levelled the tie with a win against Gotts and Sidaway. Mundesley then moved into the lead once more as Vincent and Sidaway edged Last and James Lester 12-10 in the fourth. Vincent and Gotts then moved Mundesley B one win from the quarter-finals at 4-2 up as they beat the Lesters in four. Last and James Lester kept NWSCE’s hopes alive with a win in four against Gotts and Sidaway before Last and Ben Lester forced a deciding match with another win in four against Vincent and Gotts. The Lesters therefore found themselves in a deciding encounter for the second round in succession – last time they had completed a comeback for NWSCE from 3-4 down against Aylsham B and this time they completed a comeback from 2-4 down against Mundesley B
as the cousins ran out commanding 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 winners against Vincent and Sidaway. In the quarter-finals there will be a derby at North Walsham Sports Centre as NWSCE will meet NWSCD – the Phil’s Mole and Stone welcomed back their captain Mary Sawyer after a lengthy absence through illness as the team ran out 6-0 winners against LCC Dolphin’s 3D line-up – David Thompson, Dorothy Ilines and Dian Macdonald-Smith. On the adjoining table, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Joe Kirkup and Paul Price hosted Poachers Steve Damms and Andy and Laura Marsh with Damms and Andy Marsh winning the opener in four against Elliott and Price. Kirkup and Price levelled in four against Damms and Laura Marsh and from there the hosts did not look back winning the next three battles in straight before Elliott and Kirkup sealed their 5-1 win with a win in four against Damms and Laura Marsh.
Patience was key to Shark’s Chris Marshall and Steve and Matt Hudson’s 6-0 win against NWSCC for whom the team of Stuart Hook, Joel
Lodge and Tom Wardle were unlucky not to get on the board with five of the six battles going to four sets. The closest saw the Hudsons beat Hook and Lodge 12-10, 6-11, 12-10, 12-10. Sharks will next face NWSCA who beat Mundesley A in their second round tie a couple of weeks ago.
There have also been a trio of matches played in the League itself. In the First Division, John Jackson made his League return joining NWSCE as they lost 8-2 to Poachers while NWSCC won their third match out of three to top the League standings with a comprehensive 9-1 win against Gresham’s School B. Finally NWSCF drew their meeting in the Second Division with Mundesley B 5-5.
