Mothers’ Union Supporting Christmas Shoe Box Appeal

Members of St Nicholas Mothers' Union, North Walsham have been making and buying items for the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal throughout the year. On Saturday 7 November we gathered at St Benet Hall to sort all the items and set about filling boxes for children aged between 2 and 14 years. We were delighted to be able to fill 52 boxes, which will now be delivered by the Samaritans Purse charity to children in the most impoverished parts of the world. Our next meeting will be our Advent Carol Service on Tuesday 8 December at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Room.

Visitors and new members are assured of a warm welcome. Please contact Ann on 01692 402705 for further details. New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

Politics, business, church, civic society, sport, and arts come together to back equality for mental health

An open letter calling for equality between physical and mental health is the centerpiece of a new campaign in advance of the government spending round.

In a matter of days, over two hundred top names from all walks of life signed up to the all party campaign, launched by Lib Dem former mental health minister Norman Lamb, Time to Change ambassador and former Labour government communications director Alastair Campbell, and former Conservative Cabinet minister Andrew Mitchell. All three have had their own or family mental health issues and said they have been overwhelmed by how quickly support has gathered for this latest call for more to be done to address mental illness in the UK. In addition to other political figures who have backed the call, among them the Prime Minister’s former advisor Steve Hilton, and nine former Tory and Labour health secretaries, the first signatories include senior figures from:

• BUSINESS AND EMPLOYMENT– including the IOD, TUC, as well as individuals like Sir Tom Hunter, Sir Martin Sorrell, Lord Richard Rogers, Martin Gilbert and Delia Smith. • FAITH LEADERS, including The Most Revd Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Dr Shuja Shafi of the Muslim Council of Britain. • CULTURE AND ARTS – among them Richard Curtis, Danny Boyle, Annie Lennox, Mumford and Sons, Jamal Edwards, Jimmy McGovern, Graham Norton, Emma Thompson, Frankie Bridge from the Saturdays, Steve Coogan, Caitlin Moran, Michael Morpurgo, Louis Theroux and Frank Skinner. • SPORT – including the League Managers’

Association, the Professional Cricketers’ Association, the Professional Footballers’ Association, the Rugby League State of Mind campaign, along with individuals such as Gordon Strachan, Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew from football, Olympians Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Kelly Holmes, Kevin Sinfield from rugby league, Henry Paul dual-code rugby player, Marcus Trescothick, Graeme Fowler and Mike Brearley. • MILITARY – including General Lord Richards, Sir Peter Wall and Falklands hero Simon Weston. • CIVIL SOCIETY, EDUCATION AND MEDICINE – including former Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson, Classicist Mary Beard, the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, and medical royal colleges. The open letter calls on the government to address the historic inequality between mental and physical health. It highlights just ten of the major concerns over inadequate mental health care, including the lack of access to treatment, long waiting times, inadequate crisis care, use of police cells and the shocking 20 year gap in life expectancy between those with mental health problems and the rest of the population. Norman Lamb said “People with mental health problems have always been seen as second class citizens. It's an historic injustice which has to end. The moral and the economic case is overwhelming.

It is changing, but so much more needs to be done and we need the investment now.”

Alastair Campbell said “This is an issue whose time has come. The range of people now giving their active backing to a cause that used to be so taboo nobody would talk about indicates that if we can keep up the momentum, a tipping point can come.” Andrew Mitchell said “This is a campaign which transcends party boundaries. We all know people with mental health problems and it is time they had the same levels of understanding, support and treatment as people with physical health problems. We believe this will lead to long term savings for the economy.”

Ruby Wax OBE, who has enthusiastically championed the campaign, said 'I am delighted to be part of this campaign for better mental health care. I think we are reaching a tipping point and this is clear from how readily so many people are joining us to support this campaign.'

North Walsham Christmas Lights Switch On

For many years, North Walsham has been holding its own Christmas Lights Switch On, which brings in the whole town and also others from surrounding areas. This year’s event will be held on Saturday 28 November from 2pm through to 7pm. The whole purpose of this event is to bring together families and to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. This year will be bigger and better than previous years as there will be music from Into The Crowd, Salvation Army, Manor Road Schools and more in the pipeline. We will also see the return of roasted chestnuts, which will put everyone in the mood for Christmas!

Also, as in previous years, North Norfolk Radio will be entertaining us from 5pm. There will be rides for the younger generations or even the older ones. Santa will be taking time off making his presents to visit North Walsham at 4pm to give all the boys and girls an early Christmas present in Santa’s Grotto. The stalls will include the North Walsham Christmas Lights Committee’s Deal or No Deal, Tresal Catering, Victory Explorers, Benjamin Foundation and so many more interesting and unique stalls, from tombolas to food, from rides to gifts. Overall, this event is one that North Walsham will cherish forever and it is something everyone looks forward to every year. The Light Switch On would not be going ahead if it wasn’t for the local businesses, general public and also the committee members. In order to make this event as amazing as possible, come along on Saturday 28 November, 2pm – 7pm.

If you are interested in having a stall, you can email us on nwchristmaslights@gmail.com or you can follow us on social media platforms Facebook: North Walsham Christmas Lights or Twitter: NWXmaslights

White Chocolate and Berry Cheesecake Recipe by Rene Lupar, Executive Head Chef at Mackenzie Hotels Welcome to our first recipe - a delicious concoction of White Chocolate and berries Cheesecake. Rene has three hotels to look after, The Links at West Runton, The Dales in Upper Sheringham and the Sea Marge at Overstrand. This is one of his favourite recipes - enjoy! Ingredients • 2 x 150g White chocolate • 2 x 300g Soft Philadelphia cheese • 284ml Double cream • 50g + 20g Caster sugar • 200g Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries • 85g Digestive biscuits • 20g Butter • 40g Raspberries, blueberries and strawberries (for garnishing)

Method 1. Place the chocolate into a glass bowl, then put it over a pan of just simmering water to melt, making sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Line a lightly oiled 900g loaf tin with cling film.

2. Place all berries in a sauce pan with 20g of sugar. Cook down till berries are soften, place in a blender and blend till puree the chill down. Leave 3 tablespoon aside for plate up... 3. Whisk the cheese, cream and 50g sugar together, add the chilled berry puree preferably with electric beaters, then stir into the almost-cool melted white chocolate until well combined 4. Crush biscuits in a bowl add melted butter 5. Place biscuit mix into a loaf tin, top with the cheese mixture, level the top 6. Cover and chill for 6 hrs or overnight. 7. To serve, carefully turn the tin onto a plate, lift it away and strip off the cling film. 8. Garnish with the fresh berries and drizzling over the puree left aside and serve...

A Spooky End to Fringe Festival

Ghost walks around the historic – and spooky – centre of North Walsham brought the town’s third No/Where fringe festival to a dark and chilling conclusion.

A total of 190 people, from babies to pensioners, signed up for the series of five walks which started in the late afternoon on Hallowe’en and ended after the midnight ‘witching hour’. The walks, organised by Arts North Norfolk, were led by the charity’s director, Joseph Ballard, in top hat, long black coat and deathly white pallor, who told tales of hauntings linked to the town’s plague pit, the former Paston grammar school and graves of St Nicholas Parish Church.

There were also stories of a suspected witchcraft and the hell-hound Black Shuck stalking the alleyways of the town. Research for the walks has thrown up so many chilling tales that Mr Ballard is planning a series of more, themed ghost walks around the town in the New Year. The previous evening more than 80 people enjoyed

Choirmaster David Ballard said “This will be the third year of St Nicholas having a Christmas concert given by its own church choir. It has grown each year, and is starting to gain a reputation as an essential part of many peoples Christmas schedules. As well as singing the carols that everyone knows and loves, it gives people a chance to enjoy the lighter side of Christmas, and for the choir to show off their more mischievous side which is so often hidden in other services and events which they sing at.”

Wings Appeal

As the Wings Appeal Organiser for the North Walsham Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association I am responsible for the collections in Aylsham, Hoveton, Mundesley and North Walsham. This would be an impossible task without the assistance of a team of dedicated helpers. I would like to thank them and the public for their time and generosity. Together, this year we have raised the sum of £2830. This has been forwarded via the Association to the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund from where it will be used to help serving and retired Airmen and Ovenclean will transform your oven and put the sparkle back into your kitchen! their families in need. I would also like to thank the shops and stores in these towns that helped in various ways, not least by giving us shelter from the elements. Mr R.E. Barker, North Walsham

Samaritans Purse Shoebox Appeal

Once again Christmas is approaching fast and it is a time when small groups of volunteers gather together to think of others. In an outbuilding in Aylsham, we are gathering shoe boxes full of sweets, toys and basic essentials to be sent to poor and vulnerable children in Eastern Europe, Africa and for the last two years, Syrian refugee children. Operation Christmas Child has been supplying gifts since 1970 to bring a smile to children at Christmas. If you would like to fill a shoebox and would like to know more, please look at www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/ what-we-do/operation-christmas-child These can be done as individuals, families or as a group. Thank you for bringing a smile to a child’s face at Christmas. Our contact details are Jo Masters on 01263 513458.

Tuliptree Designs

How does a long distance lorry driver, who travelled up and down the country delivering anything from washing machines to fruit, end up working in fabric.

Steve was driving along the road one day when a sign appeared ‘Low Bridge Ahead.’ Before he knew it, the bridge was right ahead of him and he got wedged under the bridge. Cars backed up and the police finally arrived to see that the lorry was not going anywhere, forwards or backwards, and needed some serious equipment to cut it out from under the bridge. Inquisitive people got out of their cars to see what has happened and why they are not going anywhere and one very irate driver walked up to Steve, put his hands on his hips and said ‘got stuck, huh?’ Steve, who has a great sense of humour replied “no, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas!” He got the sack, and decided that there has to be more to life than living in a lorry. So where does the fabric come in? Well, his sister and friend were in the early stages of starting Tuliptree Designs and asked him to help with the ‘heavy work’. He did a great job, made an OK cuppa and picked up all things ‘fabric’ very quickly, so was asked to stay. He is a big hit with the quilting ladies, who love it that he takes an interest in what they are doing and he even suggests colours and fabrics that they may not have. Why not pop in and have a chat to Steve at Tuliptree Designs, Groveland Farm Shop, Thorpe Market Road, Roughton, NR118TB 01263 834353 www.tuliptreedesigns.co.uk tuliptreedesigns@hotmail.co.uk

Wish upon a star with North Walsham’s family Christmas show

Pinocchio and the Pirates is this year’s Christmas treat on offer from Arts North Norfolk. The annual show for all the family – a must-see at Christmas time – will be setting sail 19 - 23 December at the Atrium Theatre.

Join professional actors and children from the youth theatre on the adventures of the puppet who wants to be a real boy as Pinocchio discovers the importance of honesty whilst whipped into a sea-faring adventure with some greedy pirates.

The show will feature professional actors and local children from the youth theatre. All the panto essentials will be in the mix from local gags, comedy routines, tap-along songs, goodies and baddies, sparkling magic and a good dose of audience participation.

Joseph Ballard, who is a professional actor and director and also runs

Players Success Once More!

The North Walsham Players annual variety show took place at North Walsham Community Centre on 16 October.

It featured a cast of twenty, including special guests local girl band Into The Crowd, and was very well attended.

The show was directed by founder member Colin Jeary, who participated in the show as well as operating the sound and lighting due to other cast commitments. Colin said he was very happy with the way the cast worked as a team to perform a first class show. He added ‘some people would not believe that we had only rehearsed twice a week for seven weeks prior to the show which equates to basically 14 hours! It was great to have Into The Crowd perform at the show’, who he had talent spotted at this year’s funday.

Arts North Norfolk has once again written, directed and produced the show. Joseph has played a prince, a comic, a baddie and even a witch in the past and he is looking forward to playing something different this year.

Joseph said “Christmas just isn’t Christmas until you visit the local panto with the rest of your family. I really enjoy presenting good quality theatre that all ages can enjoy together. I have adapted the story and inserted some pirates as the show’s baddies – it’ll be great fun for everyone! We want to encourage everyone nearby to come and support their local panto. We present events and shows all year round but Christmas is a big time for us as a charity.”

Following on from the sell-out success of last year’s Beauty and the Beast, more shows have been planned including more afternoon performances. Group bookings from clubs, schools and businesses are welcome and group leaders are encourage to get in touch with the box office about the group discounts. Tickets are £9 adults, £7 concessions and £6 children. The popular family of 4 ticket deal has returned at £28.

For tickets and to find out about group booking discounts, pop into Arts North Norfolk at No. 1 Market place, call 01692 218060 or book online. More information about other local events and classes, can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.

The annual Christmas Fayre at the Atrium will be taking place on Saturday 21 November, 10am-3pm. Local craftspeople, artists and food and drink providers will be selling their wares and the Atrium café will be open all day serving hot drinks and its famous bacon rolls. Sing-Along Frozen will be screened at 11am in the theatre, with a slideshow presentation by Brian Hedge at 2pm. Father Christmas will pop in at lunchtime and you’ll also have the chance to meet some of the character’s from Pinocchio!

The show also featured a Blood Brothers medley & Billy Elliott medley amongst other songs and sketches, including local singer and Players’ member Neville Rowe.

Colin added that thanks were also due to the local businesses that supported the group including Maisie May Bridal Wear, Cosy Café, Taylor – Minns Accountancy, MW Motor Services and Carl Bird Ltd.

This year’s show was raising money for the Sahloul University Hospital Tunisia, which helped North Walsham resident Tony Callaghan and his wife when they were involved in the shooting in Tunisia earlier this year.

North Walsham Players pantomime takes place at the end of February next year - if you would like to be involved please contact Colin Jeary on 01692 402116 or email jeabol@aol.com. Chorus members are always sought aged 8+.

Also next year see’s Irish comedian Jimmy Cricket returning to the Community Centre, more details will be released early 2016.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have had nine kittens in from the feral colony mentioned before but have now been advised there are a further two to be caught. Catching the adults is ongoing but has not been helped by the fact that when previous ones were caught they did not have their ears tipped, which is the normal procedure, but instead had some fur taken from their tails, which has grown back again. Consequently, several have been trapped again and have had to undergo an unnecessary operation. The tail clipping was done by a different vet and is not the accepted practice for dealing with feral cats, for obvious reasons.

One of the joys of being a volunteer is being involved in caring for the cats and kittens while they are with us. Seeing frightened cats gaining confidence and learning to trust their carers gives us great pleasure and although we do get attached to them all, it is nice to know that they will be living in a house and getting the attention they deserve. A new home, where they can share a lap, a chair or even watch the television and enjoy the company of their new family. One of the biggest benefits is helping to care for the kittens. While some are born in care or arrive when a few days old, others can be several weeks old when they join us. Seeing the very young ones open their eyes and then starting to explore the world outside their bed, never ceases to bring a smile to our faces. Once they become

more mobile, watching them finding and using a litter tray (with no Grooming Parlour help from us). You honestly do not need to train a kitten to use a litter tray as they do this Full Grooming & instinctively, which Hydrobathing makes you realise how Available wonderful nature is. Then, as they get older, 01692 501212 seeing them playing and 07817 179228 learning how to hunt. To debonairdogs@btinternet.com watch a small kitten growling at its litter mates to make sure they do not come too close as they have caught a cat mint sack and do not want to share, always causes amusement. They are not kittens for long, so it is a privilege we enjoy on a regular basis and one of the perks of having to clean the pens on a cold, wet and windy day.

The Need for

Microchipping

Each week we see cats and dogs that are lost or have escaped from home. Some, sadly, have been involved in road traffic accidents. Thanks to the majority of our clients having already microchipped their pets, they usually get reunited. Imagine though, if your pet went missing and it didn’t have a microchip…… the outcome could be very different.

Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet, not only will it prevent your pet from becoming lost and ending up in rehoming centres because the owners cannot be traced, it will also help to prevent theft of animals. • • • • • •

Microchips are easily placed via a needle into the scruff of the neck No need for anaesthetic or sedation Painless – no aftercare required Permanent – one microchip should last the lifetime of your pet Microchips are about the size of grain of rice Cats can be chipped too, but it is not a legal requirement.

From 6th April 2016 it will become law that all dogs have a microchip by 8 weeks of age and are registered on an approved database. Non-compliance may result in a fine of up to £500. You will also be required to keep your contact details up to date on the database. Non-compliance may again result in a fine of up to £500. It will still be a legal requirement for your dog to wear a collar and tag when out in a public place.

The tag must state the name and address of the owner, ideally with a contact number.

Patients urged: please don’t ask for painkillers on prescription It’s your NHS – please use it wisely!

“Every time a doctor writes a prescription, the NHS incurs additional charges through dispensing and administrative fees – and if GP time is also included the cost rises even higher. “These painkillers can be bought from a shop or pharmacy for less than half the price the NHS pays when providing them on prescription. For that reason, we are asking people to make this choice. “By doing so they will help us save money that we can then invest elsewhere – to ensure it is spent providing care for the patients in North Norfolk and rural Broadland who need it the most.” As part of its campaign, North Norfolk CCG has produced posters for local GP practices, health centres and libraries. These explain that the £400,000 spent each year prescribing paracetamol and inbuprofen as tablets, caplets, gel and suspension products is equivalent to:

That is the message to people in North Norfolk and rural Broadland as a new campaign seeks to highlight the true cost of providing small quantities of low-dose painkillers on prescription. GPs at the 19 member practices within North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) currently write about 107,000 prescriptions a year for paracetamol and ibuprofen – at a cost of £400,000. But the CCG has agreed to change its approach to make the best possible use of resources. As a result, GPs are to stop prescribing these painkillers in small quantities for short-term use, with patients encouraged to purchase their own from a local shop, supermarket or pharmacy. By choosing less expensive generic or in-store brands, patients can buy their paracetamol or ibuprofen for less than half the price the NHS pays when providing them on prescription. Dr Linda Hunter, North Norfolk CCG’s clinical prescribing lead and a member of its Governing Body, said it was important that patients were aware of the drugs’ true cost to the NHS. With 16 paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets widely available for between 20p and 40p, the fees the NHS pays to provide them on prescription can be much higher than the cost of the drugs. “At a time when the NHS is facing huge financial pressures, providing small quantities of these painkillers on prescription is not an effective use of funds,” Dr Hunter said.

• 80 more hip replacements or • 15,385 more hormone treatments for breast cancer or • 18,000 more Alzheimer’s drug treatments (average cost) or • 490 more cataract operations or • 13 more chemotherapy treatments

Patients with existing medical conditions who require paracetamol and ibuprofen in large quantities or higher doses will continue to receive them on repeat prescription. Anyone who requires further information can pick up a factsheet from their local GP surgery.

Be careful - keep your pets safe at Christmas

It has come around quickly and with Christmas looming up I thought I’d write a few handy tips to ensure that you and your pets don’t have any unwanted festive surprises!

Firstly, watch out for the common household items and food that can be toxic to your pets. Top of the list for cats are lilies and anti-freeze solution, which can both lead to kidney failure.

Also, with the increased risk of hangovers this time of year, mind out where you leave paracetamol as this is highly toxic to cats as well! For our canine companions, the greatest risks are posed by chocolate and raisins, both in abundance during the festive period. The other problem we encounter regularly as vets through the holiday period are obstructions of the intestinal tract. Christmas decorations and childrens toys are always popular with cats and dogs alike, but not so easily digested, so be warned!

We are also very proud to announce that here at Westover Vets we are now able to offer keyhole spays and surgery, making us one of only a few practices nationwide using this fantastic technique. Keyhole surgery, or laparoscopy, involves the use of delicate instruments and small cameras to perform surgery through tiny holes in the abdomen (see photo). The advantages for our patients are huge. Research has shown MIKE WILKINS keyhole spaying is 70% less painful than traditional techniques, there is also less trauma associated with the surgery, which reduces the risks and speeds the recovery process. Having performed both techniques for a number of years, I can say that

there is no argument over which has the greater benefits, which is probably why keyhole surgery is the first choice for human medicine. SKIP TURNS UP VOLUME WITH BOOK NUMBER 39

Cromer writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper is ready to test his mardling and joined-up writing Sheringham North skills!

His new book, number 39 off his homely Norfolk production line, forms an affectionate salute to packed years on the local scene as he dips into his memory bag and photograph albums. Signing sessions have been arranged at The Atrium in North Walsham on Saturday November, from 10am until 3pm, and at Jarrold’s book department in their Cromer store on Saturday 5 December from 11am until 1pm.

Norfolk Post

Keith Skipper’s Norfolk Scrapbook is shot through with his customary wit and humour – but there also some more serious items, including verses written by people he admires. Pictures of Skip’s colourful career abound along with a series of old postcard scenes of Norfolk villages and poignant images of old farming days.

The volume also includes various posters, programmes and other memorabilia closely connected with invitations to hold forth at all manner of occasions since finding his feet at cricket dinners in the 1960s. “In some respects, this is my way of finding a permanent home for old friends I simply can’t live without.”

The book, another collaboration with Peter Stibbons of Poppyland Publishing based in Cromer (www.poppyland.co.uk ) and costs £9.95 in local bookshops. 22

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

Although living within a few miles of the sea, many of us take the security of our coastline for granted. This assumption was challenged by Peter Lawrence when he delivered a presentation to the Club last month. Until 1990 the role was fulfilled by the RNLI, when the Institution considered that because of global surveillance the number of stations could be reduced. The nearest station to the Norfolk coast is the Humber.
