Incubator has landed!
North Walsham Rotary Club has been supporting a village in western Zambia, Mombo over the last couple of years. One of the members, Dr Geof Harrison, an agricultural specialist, visited in 2013, assessed their needs, and thereafter the Club funded a well, which transformed the lives of the villagers locals by providing them with a source of safe, fresh water.
Recently the Club has helped by purchasing an incubator to increase chicken and egg production.
The Ckub has just heard from their contact on the ground, Father Francis Wakunguma, that the incubator has landed in Zambia and after loading into his car, is on its way to Mombo.
Largely through cash raised by Geof Harrison, who ran in the 2015 London Marathon, North Walsham Rotary Club are funding the installation of solar panels to give some electric power to the village, especially the pre-school.
It is hoped that Geof will visit again next year. The Club regard his expertise as vital in advising the Club on priorities in assistance to this very poor village.
Millfield’s ‘Star’ Interview
Riding on the successful launch of their new school magazine ‘Millfield Madness’, the school’s reporters were delighted to welcome and interview a North Walsham celebrity, Joseph Ballard.
Mr Ballard, who is a professional actor and director and who has produced many plays, was delighted to take the hot seat. He talked about his new pantomime, Pinocchio and the Pirates, which is running at The Atrium 19 – 23 December and explained that audiences can expect lots of songs, dances, music and a sprinkling of Christmas magic.
The children eased Mr Ballard into the interview before getting to the grittier questions posed by the school’s reporters. Year 6 reporter Issy Rushen asked if he could be in any play, which one would he like to be in. Mr Ballard said that he would love to be in Harry Potter the prequel but he felt he might be a little old for that part!
They also posed hard hitting questions including who is his favourite cartoon character. After some thought Mr Ballard said he liked Fred from Scooby Doo.
Also they found out that he prefers chocolate to cheese and he would prefer to eat bread with worms on rather than bread with spiders! The children thanked Mr Ballard for his time and were delighted that they were lucky enough to interview a celebrity.
Mr Ballard kindly donated a family ticket to the pantomime, which will go into a prize draw when people purchase the magazine.

While the squash cooks, melt the butter with the remaining oil in a large saucepan, then add the onions, garlic, ground cumin and coriander and ¾ of the chilli. Did the introduction of Prince William into the East of England Air Ambulance Service raise the services profile?

A Merry and Safe Christmas from Toll Barn Vets Heath Road, North Walsham, NR28 0JB. Tel 01692 407126
Christmas is fun for all the family including our pets! However, Christmas is a busy time for our 24/7 on site emergency service with hidden festive dangers... Christmas Cake, Mince Pies and Fruit Bowls contain raisins, sultanas or grapes. Delicious for us but in pets these can cause kidney damage. They can also contain alcohol causing signs of intoxication, low blood sugar, blood pressure and temperature. Onions and Garlic can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea and potentially destruction of red blood cells (haemolytic anaemia). Mum’s sage and onion stuffing might taste great but it’s best to avoid giving pets “left overs”.
Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The amount of theobromine varies with the type of chocolate (dark chocolate contains the highest levels). Depending on the amount and type of chocolate eaten, signs range from vomiting and diarrhoea to wobbliness, seizures and changes in heart rhythm (arrhythmias). It is helpful to tell your vet how much and what type of chocolate was eaten to help determine whether a toxic dose has been reached. Pets, especially dogs, have an exceptional sense of smell and often hunt out Bones, Foil or String from bins. Bones are often brittle and splinter easily causing blockages or tears within the oesophagus and intestine, whilst foil and string cause obstructions within the stomach and intestine. Many foods also contain high levels of fat increasing the risk of pancreatitis.
Around the house Tinsel and Ornaments are particularly attractive. If eaten these often cause blockages within the intestines. Candles and Fairy Lights are appealing to curious pets but can result in electrocution or burns if chewed so place them out of reach of naughty paws! Christmas trees are also potentially toxic as pine needles cause irritation of the mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea and weakness. Naughty puppies and kittens can also injure themselves climbing Christmas trees so it is advisable to have a barrier to prevent access and keen supervision!
Lilies from festive bouquets can cause kidney failure in cats. If your cat comes into contact with lilies and the pollen sticks to their fur immediately place a buster collar or t-shirt to prevent them licking and contact your vet. Holly, Mistletoe and Poinsettias are also toxic causing vomiting, diarrhoea and depression. Mistletoe can also cause collapse and changes in heart rate whilst Poinsettia sap causes blistering of the mouth and stomach. We recommend all plants are kept well out of reach of inquisitive pets!
These problems are treatable if caught early enough so if you have concerns our 24/7 on site emergency service is available for our clients throughout Christmas and New Year on our normal number (01692 407126). Staff from Toll Barn Vets wish you all a safe and Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We were assisted again this year by a great team of helpers who, together with staff from Sainsbury and Waitrose manned collection points in both stores for two weeks. It would also have been impossible to achieve such a fantastic total without the support of the many businesses and individuals who hosted or carried Poppy Tins throughout the area and special mention should be made of tghe local schools who contributed a fantastic amount to this year’s total. Most of all though thank you to the wonderfully generous people of the North Walsham Area who once again donated a record amount and helped ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises.

Young people are at the heart of the Christmas show for all ages
Pinocchio and the Pirates is this year’s Christmas treat on offer from Arts North Norfolk. The annual show for all the family – a must-see at Christmas time – will be setting sail 19-23 December at the Atrium Theatre.
Professional actors are busy rehearsing for the show, but they will be joined by a cast of local children and young people. This year’s pantomime will have the magic touch from local dance group called Dance for Fun, who practice weekly in Smallburgh. The group is made up of children
aged from five years old and styles range from ballet, tap, disco and gymnastic dance. They perform at events all year round from talent competitions, fetes, shows and dance festivals.

allowed to explore by itself for an hour or two. When you do go into the room, get down to his level and speak to him quietly. It he should decide to hide, just sit quietly in the room, talking to him but not trying to force him to come out. It you do try to force him it will take him longer to accept the changes in his life. It he does hide, do not worry as this is normal behaviour if he is a timid cat. As long as he has food and water and a litter tray in the room, he will take advantage of them in his own good time. Offering treats or using fishing rod toys may help to tempt him out and a good way for you to bond with him. Once he has settled you can then introduce him to the rest of the family and allow him to explore other areas of his new home, albeit a bit at a time. Having made these suggestions, cats do love to prove us wrong and some will walk into their new home and be happy and settled straight away. With kittens, the process is different but more of this next time. This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
Out of Hours Service
Following feedback from our valued clients, it has become clear that our local out of hours service is sorely missed.
Although all our previous decisions regarding emergency care were made with our patients best interests at heart, we recognise the importance of having a vet on call closer to home. For this reason, Westover Vets are returning to providing our own on call service from 1 January 2016.
Out of hours work is a very important part of a vets job and one that we are proud to be able to provide. It is also one of the most rewarding aspects of what we do and making a difference and trying to save lives is one of the best parts of veterinary work.
Our cases this month reflect the variety of emergencies that walk through our door. Megan, a 1 year old Novia Scotia Retriever presented one Saturday with a high temperature, very stiff neck and was barely able to walk. Understandably, her owners were very worried as she had deteriorated rapidly from being a bouncy young dog to being in a lot of pain. Following a careful clinical examination and a series of blood tests, x rays and fluid analysis, she was diagnosed with a type of meningitis. Fortunately she responded very well to treatment and within a couple of days was moving more freely and hasn't looked back since.
14
Our other case was slightly more unusual and was that of a duck brought in to the surgery by a member of the public on suspicion of swallowing a fishing hook. As you can see from the xray (I have circled the hook in red), they were quite right! We gave the duck a short general anaesthetic, removed the offending hook and it was released successfully back into the wild. It doesn't happen every day, but it is nice to be able to help when it does! Toby Morrell MRCVS
Finally, we would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous and Healthy New Year. Thank you all for your support.

Dear Margaret,
For over 40 years I have been collecting postage stamps for charity and, although I may have retired from normal work, I would like to remind people that I have not retired from collecting stamps for charity, even at 82 years of age. Stamps may still be handed in at Sainsburys at the Lottery counter, also the Mobile Library – many thanks to you both for your help in the past - and also the mobile Fish Van on the Thursday market. I would like to add that I will also value collections and, if the price is right, will buy. Thank you to those who have continued to contribute. Please contact me on 01692 405002 evenings in regards to the above. Yours sincerely, Arthur Gribben
Dear Margaret,
Through the North Walsham Times I would like to express my thanks to the Good Samaritan who came to my aid on the evening of Friday 27 November after I had a collision with a deer on the by-pass. I am so grateful to him for his assistance in checking under my car, removing broken parts and then following me to North Walsham to ensure all was well. Yours sincerely, Jean Hills

Bindi’s Ordeal
At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we are enjoy being able to care for a variety of different pets. Most of these come from loving homes, however, we are also proud to be able to help many local charities and rescue centres caring for sick, abandoned or stray animals. Bindi has had a rough start in life and was found roaming the area with terrible injuries to her legs which look suspiciously like they come from a snare trap. One of her front legs had severe damage to the toes, which had caused the claw to grow inside the skin and made it extremely painful for her to walk on the leg. Her back leg had lost almost all of the skin up to the hock (ankle) joint. Thankfully, there were no fractures involved, we undertook surgery to remove two of her toes which were too badly damaged to heal. Bindi has now recovered from surgery and had several weeks of bandages to help the wound on her back leg to heal. She is now fully recovered and, apart from her scar, shows no signs of her ordeal. The RSPCA East Norfolk Branch rescued Bindi when she was found injured and have been caring for her with some much needed TLC ever since. Bindi is now well enough
to be rehomed so if you think you could offer her a well-deserved new start in life please contact RSPCA East Norfolk on 07867 972870

Club receives donations and hosts club competition
North Walsham Gymnastics Club was recently presented with a cheque for £1,000 from Chantelle Asker, Field Sales Manager for Persimmon Housing. The award was made through their Community Champions scheme and the money will go towards updating the clubs Airtrack factory training kit.
A donation of £2,000 was also received from the locally based Victory Housing Trust. This was via the Norfolk Community Foundation and will go towards new vaulting equipment.
Sponsored Swim
The Waterworks Buddies Team, composed of early morning swimmers at the Victory Pool in North Walsham, recently presented a cheque to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for the benefit of the charitable fund for the Urology Department.
The swimmers were sponsored in their challenge to swim the equivalent distance from Harwich to the Hook of Holland - a distance of approximately 126 miles – the swim began on 1 October and finished on 7 December.
This challenge was a spontaneous idea arising from the husband of one of the swimmers having had a major RANDALLS ELECTRICAL operation in the Urology Department. Shop at 7 Church Street, Cromer
The presentation took place under the auspices of Louise Cook, the Charity Coordinator, at the Hospital at the Hospital Christmas Fayre on Thursday 10 December.

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Three home teams make doubles cup semi-finals In the Premier Division, NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane hosted Shark’s Steve Patterson, Matt Hudson and Chris Marshall at Antingham Village Hall with Patterson winning a marvellous opener of momentum shifts against Vaughan 13-15, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11. Patterson was then quick out of the blocks and proved too good for Baldock-Yaxley who never really got going as the Shark won 11-7, 11-6, 11-7. With NWSCA winning five of the first seven battles in straight sets, they led the match 5-2 before Patterson completed his maximum with an 11-8, 10-12, 11-7, 4-11, 11-8 defeat of Beane. In the final singles Vaughan led the deciding fifth set 9-5, but Hudson came back to win 13-11 to keep Sharks in the contest. Normally the pairing of Beane and BaldockYaxley are a force in the doubles and they made a good start, but once again the Sharks showed their bite as Patterson and Hudson won in four from a set down to draw the match 5-5. The following week NWSCA faced Sharks again in the quarter-finals of the Knockout Doubles Cup. Steve Hudson took the place of Patterson and NWSCA won 5-0 to set up a semi-final showdown with Gresham’s School A – a repeat

of last year’s final.
At North Walsham Sport’s Centre, Joe Kirkup played up for his old team NWSCD in the Premier Division as he joined the Phil’s Mole and Stone to host Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Wilson saving a set-point in the first before comfortably beating Stone in straight. Warner beat Kirkup in three while Mole had wins in five against both De Neve and Wilson (although it was definitely a home net in the last set of the latter contest!). Stone then found his best form to beat Warner 11-6, 12-10, 11-4. Two more straight set contests followed with wins for Kirkup and Warner against De Neve and Mole respectively. Any time Kirkup and Wilson lock horns is always a treat as the attack of the former is pitted against the defence of the latter and this latest contest was no exception with Kirkup winning in five. At 5-3 ahead Stone had a chance to close out the match for the hosts in the final singles but he could find no answer to the quick reactions of De Neve especially in the first two sets as the Backhander won 11-8, 11-4, 8-11, 12-10. The two players met again straight away in the doubles with Kirkup and Stone
combining well to defeat Wilson and De Neve in three to close out the match 6-4 for NWSCD. Jack Morton made his return as he joined the two Phils for their Knockout Doubles Cup quarter-final – a derby against NWSCE’s Carrie Last and James and Ben Lester. The two Lesters beat the two Phils in five in the opener and at 1-4 down, NWSCE took another win in five to keep in contention but a quartet of victories in four plus a final win in straight saw NWSCD to a 5-2 win. A home team is guaranteed a place in the final as they will meet NWSCB in the semis after they beat Aylsham A 5-1.
In the First Division, Mundesley A’s Peter Betts, Jonathan Care and Andrew Tuddenham won 9-1 against NWSCE. James Lester took the point for the visitors – in five after being two sets up against Tuddenham before being edged out 12-10 in the fifth by Care. Finally NWSCC’s Stuart Hook, Paul Brown and Joel Lodge all took braces as they beat Aylsham B 6-4.
