Ofsted rates Paston Sixth Form College all ‘good’

Inspectors visited the College last month and published their report this month, giving it an overall rating of ‘good’, as well as ‘good’ in all the individual aspects that are assessed : exam results, teaching and learning, personal development, behaviour and welfare, and leadership and management. The inspection was based on the new, tougher inspection framework, which was introduced in September 2015. The Inspection found that, at Paston :

“All learners are well behaved, motivated and have a positive attitude to learning, in and outside of lessons.”

“They treat each other and their teachers with respect and value greatly the high level of support and guidance provided by their teachers.”

“Learners benefit from teachers’ high levels of specialist skills and the passion they have for their subjects.”

“The quality of learners’ work is high and at times outstanding.”

Ofsted rates Paston Sixth Form College all ‘good’ Continued from front cover...

“Learners make very good progress in their lessons; as a result a high proportion of learners achieve their qualifications and their target grades.”

“A high proportion secure places in higher education, including at Russell Group universities, or gain employment when this is their intention.”

The Report suggested the College would be ‘outstanding’ were it not for the “small number” of students without GCSE mathematics, where “too

few learners improve their GCSE mathematics grade while at the college” and also because “not enough learners, particularly those on academic programmes, have sufficient access to work experience placements.”

In fact, the College was already working to address these areas with the appointment of a new GCSE mathematics specialist, who has already had a significant impact on results, and a collaboration with the careers specialist ‘Beacon East’ to improve students’ preparation for work.

Principal Kevin Grieve said “This is an extremely pleasing Report which reflects the excellent results our students have achieved over an extended period of time. I am very proud of all the hard work put in by students and all the teaching and support staff at the College. I would also like to thank parents for their contribution and the support from everyone involved with the College. It is a great team effort.”

He also commented that “Ofsted have not only picked out areas of good and outstanding practice but provided us with other guidance to get even better in the future. We know we have a very good College here that is at the heart of the community, helping students achieve high grades and progressing on to great opportunities in HE and employment.”

The College is having an Open Morning on Saturday 6 February 2016 from 10am – 12.30pm. This will provide students and parents with an opportunity to find out more and apply for September 2016.

Children Go Free at Nearly there - junction at Bure Valley Railway! Felbrigg A148/B1436

The Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway returns for the children’s half term holiday from 13th to 21st February 2016. The Railway’s resident bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family!

Trains will operate from both Aylsham and Wroxham stations three times per day. A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whilstlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event.

To make this truly a children’s event, the Railway is giving free travel to every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum 2 children per adult). No prior booking required.

PS. Don’t forget to bring your own teddy so that the Railway Bear is not lonely!

For further information contact: Susan Munday, Bure Valley Railway, Aylsham Station, Norwich Road, Aylsham, NR11 6BW 01263 733858 www.bvrw.co.uk marketing@bvrw.co.uk

After over eight years of campaigning by the Steps to Safety group, acknowledgement of the need for a roundabout at this important, frustrating and dangerous junction has been made by Norfolk County Council Highways Dept.

Their costing estimate is £552,000 but they are unable to meet the entire costs from their own funds and are seeking help to cover the shortfall, which after pledges received from local town and parish councils, the district council and the National Trust, is in the region of £107,000. In order to safeguard the monies committed by NNC, work needs to start fairly soon.

During the past two years surveys undertaken by the Steps team, both from the public and local businesses, showed overwhelming support for a roundabout at this junction.

We are now seeking monetary pledges in order to close the funding gap. We are not asking for money at this stage but pledges, which will only be called in when the project is ready to start. If you would like to see a roundabout at this junction please consider pledging now.

The easiest way is through our web site www.felbriggroundabout.com, which has a lot of information on the project or to me Sue.arnold@talktalk.net.

Please give this your URGENT CONSIDERATION. If we are unable to realise these additional funds there is a real possibility the commitment from NNC will be withdrawn.

Yours sincerely, Sue Arnold Chair of Steps to Safety Campaign District Councillor for Roughton Ward (Felbrigg, Roughton, Southrepps and Thorpe Market)

Paston Sixth Form College – a tribute to Shakespeare

Paston Sixth Form College students, through the Far East Theatre Group, have taken on the challenge of performing two Shakespeare Plays. This is to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare in 1616. It is also of special significance in that the plays will be the first full productions in the new purpose built Griffon Theatre. The great British Director, Peter Brook, said of Shakespeare, ‘he gives us more moment for moment for our money’. The students’ performance will certainly give the audience many moments to ponder the impact of Shakespeare in terms of drama, dance and song.

The two plays being performed are The Comedy of Errors and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

staged in totally different ways, and using up to date lighting and sound effects.

The Comedy of Errors has been produced to highlight the traditional elements of farce in the play, and is set in a Dr Seuss inspired world of confusion and colour. Drama, music, slapstick and comedy will be used to explore the issues of family, identity and love.

The Comedy of Errors runs from Tuesday 2 February to Friday 5 February at 7.30pm. Matinee 1pm on Wednesday 3 February.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and popular plays. This adaption is set on a Norfolk County Estate circa 1920s.

The plays last just over an hour and anyone is welcome to contact the College and buy tickets for the performances on 01692 402334 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday or 8.30am to 4.30pm Fridays.

Congratulations to Sam Lowe and all the brave folk who plunged into a freezing North Sea on New Years Day for charity.

Robert Plumb, who had already raised £2000 from previous events, was delighted with the additional £260 that was raised by the swimmers on the day. 10

He said “the money will go to Arthritis Research. I met up with the swimmers at The Links Country Park Hotel, where another annual charity golfing tournament was taking place, so it was a brilliant start to the year.”

“I will do all I can to help this worthy cause and I look forward to next year’s event. Well done to all concerned, keep up the good work.”

I have been cut out of a Will – What can I do?

As a general rule of thumb, people in England and Wales can leave their property in their Wills to whoever they wish. After all, it is the whole point of going to the cost of having a Will in the first place. The courts can decide if a Will is valid if the deceased’s capacity at the time of making the Will was impaired or if it can be proved they were unduly influenced by another to leave their estate to them entirely or in greater measure than they would have done. However, there may be nothing that can be done to overturn the Will itself where these cannot be shown to have occurred.

There may however be another protection for someone close to the deceased where they have been cut out of the Will. The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 allows, in certain circumstances, for payments to close family to be made out of the estate despite what the intentions of the deceased were in their Will. It is also possible that promises that were made by the deceased may be enforceable.

Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 - The Act makes it possible for close family and dependents who are not adequately provided for financially under a Will, to apply to the Courts for an order that they should receive reasonable provision from the deceased’s estate.

A spouse that is cut out of a will can generally expect to receive a considerable payment. The Courts are likely to order that provision should be made that is reasonable for the surviving spouse to have, whether or not the spouse is financially secure or not. Children of the deceased, or another dependent relative, might get a lesser payment that is sufficient to ensure that their everyday needs are paid for.

It is possible, and in fact quite regular, for these types of claims to be brought by several different people against the same estate. This is especially likely to be the case in disputes involving a longrunning sibling rivalry and subsequent fallout or a family argument of perhaps the elderly widow(er) and the fresh on the scene, younger love interest.

Under the Act, the Courts are required to take into account many factors in deciding whether to make an order for provision of the disappointed dependent and if so, the amount that the dependent requires from the estate to be provided for adequately.

Even where such an order is made by the Courts, the Will, as created and signed by the deceased, remains valid. After the terms of the order have been satisfied, the Will continues to apply to the rest of the estate subject to any further order of the Courts. This is true of all gifts under the Will and all powers provided to the Executor(s) of it.

Proprietary Estoppel - A person may be granted relief where there was a “representation or assurance made to the claimant pertaining to an interest in identified property; reasonable reliance on it by the claimant; and detriment to the claimant in consequence of that reliance. The claimant has to show that it would be unconscionable for the person who made the assurance or representation to go back on his word, and deprive the claimant of the proprietary interest he had been led to expect.” In plain English, this means where the deceased made a promise to someone that the Will would leave them something, but then the Will did not in fact do so. If the person acted on that promise, and suffered a loss, then they can seek to enforce the promise to receive the property in spite of the Will.

Take for example the model of this family business.

If the father is the sole owner and has four children. Children 1-3 each leave home and pursue extremely successful careers in the city. Child 4, however, enters the family business at 16 when he leaves school and remains there his whole life, without taking a wage and living with his parents on the assurance from his father that the business would pass on to him. Father dies and the Will leaves the family business to all four children in equal shares. Children 1-3 are delighted because on top of the city salary, they now have a 25% share of a reasonably successful local business. Child 4 has devoted his entire life to the business without taking a salary and ends up receiving the same share of the business as his brothers and sisters. The rules of equity determine that this is not fair and Child 4 could reasonably make a claim for the entire 100% share of the business.

Again, the Will remains valid, but the specific property in question no longer forms part of the estate. These are just two of many potential issues that may arise with the passing of a loved one. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Gremlin, the little kitten featured in the last article, has now found a loving new home in North Walsham with her brother Scallywag. We have now taken into care 32 kittens from the colony and know there is at least one more to be caught. Some of the kittens have had contact with the person caring for the adult cats and most have reacted positively and quickly to the people involved in their care. Another two of the kittens, Malificent and Rioja, have also left for a loving new home.

As well as taking the kittens into care, we have also taken in 3 cats whose owners have sadly died. Boco, is a really big, but beautiful, black and white lad and his sister is a very pretty tortie girl. These cats are about six years old and, apart from Boco needing to lose some weight, they appear to be in good condition. However, they not yet been to the vets for a check up. The other little cat is ginger and is quite old, about 17 years our vets believe. She had been outside since her owner died so it is quite a relief to have her in care. At present we are waiting for the results of blood tests to confirm the vets concerns about her general health. However, we soon realised that this dear little cat is blind. On arrival she was disorientated but, by confining her to her housing unit with all facilities to hand, she soon settled down and is very much happier. She also just loves attention, which was obvious to David, her

vet, when trying to examine her and listen to her heart. Once her health problems have been resolved, she will be adopted by one of our fosterers who, having lost two of her old cats last year, was looking to give a home to another old cat. This special little girl has certainly landed on her paws.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This Recent arrival, Boco number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Remarkable Animals

Having such a huge litter puts a big strain on a mother (and her owners!), but through a lot of hard work and sleepless nights the pups are thriving and mum is also doing well. Giving birth can be a scary time in any species of animal and carries its risks so we were very proud of everyone involved with Trouble’s case, including her owners, as it resulted in a wonderful outcome and one none of us are likely to forget in a hurry!

We’ve had a very varied and exciting New Year here at Westover with some very unusual cases and some fantastic success stories. Dealing with puppies and kittens is always a bit of a treat for animal lovers, but we were treated to an incredible day recently when one of our patients, Trouble, a beautiful Mastiff bitch started to whelp (labour for dogs).

She had been scanned a month earlier and confirmed to be carrying puppies, there were so many it was not possible to give an exact number, but there were at least 10 puppies present. On the day she started to give birth she passed six pups at home, before she encountered problems. At that time she was brought straight in to the surgery where an emergency caesarean section was performed by our vet Del Tubby and a team of four nurses. Incredibly, they removed another 11 puppies, hence the need for so many assistants to monitor Trouble’s anaesthetic and resuscitate the pups. In total she had 17 puppies, which is the largest litter any of us had seen before.

Lost Cat

Please help me find Bruce who stowed away in a van and ended up lost in Cromer miles from his home in Reepham.

Bruce was last seen on 7 January at the Norfolk Homes development, Park View, Sayer Crescent, Roughton Road, Cromer, heading towards Amazonia.

He is a 20 month old neutered tom, white and black with a ‘beauty spot’ of black fur on the right hand side of his face. He is microchipped.

Any sightings please call Carolyn on 01603 870850 or 07920035405 Thank you. 12

Interestingly the world record litter was also born to a mastiff, a Neapolitan Mastiff on this occasion, not too far from here in Cambridgeshire. On that occasion, the bitch gave birth to 24 puppies, which is truly phenomenal, so perhaps there is something in the East Anglian water!

Here at Age Concern North Norfolk we are trying to eradicate loneliness amongst the over 55s in our area and have been running a befriending service for 10 years now. We are funded by the National Lottery with an aim at doing just that.

But to help us achieve this goal we desperately need more volunteers to become befrienders. We currently have a long waiting list for people who would like a befriender and many, without more volunteers, will have to potentially wait for a long time to be matched with someone. We want that to change in 2016.

Please do something wonderful this New Year and give someone who is lonely back their life by lifting their moral and, for many, giving them a reason to go on living.

I did this before I became employed by our charity and, like so many of our wonderful existing volunteers, I got so much pleasure out of seeing another person being made so happy by a simple act, such as making a cup of tea and listening to their stories.

Your visit may last for an hour or two, once or

twice a week, or fortnightly; whatever time you are free to give and that you and your new friend mutually agree upon. You may play games, reminisce, and help to read books or just have a good old chat over that aforementioned cuppa.

Having that someone you know and get along with in your life and the feeling you have as you look forward to seeing them can make the world of difference to a befriended person and the volunteer. It can be the difference between the befriended getting poorly and or falling ill and them having a happy, fulfilling quality of life. Made only all the more important this time of year as the cold days and dark nights can often bring the gloomy thoughts of loneliness to many.

All Proceeds go towards Age Concern North Norfolk and the Grand Order of Water Rats Thank you, Adam Administrator, Age Concern North Norfolk 01263 823126 ageuknn.admin@xlninternet.co.uk

Pinocchio and the Pirates! A hit with audiences Arts charity very pleased with their Christmas offering

Christmas was a very busy time for Arts North Norfolk following on from the busy Christmas Fayre to other events like the carol concert, but it was the Christmas pantomime that stole the show, selling out to a 95% capacity over the six performances. Rapport was built with its energetic pace, flowing audience engagement and its own interpretation of the big traditional elements.

Forty eight children and young people were involved in the show accompanied by professional adult actors and 24 volunteers helped support the show in many ways from backstage help to make-up and front of house duties. Arts North Norfolk’s own drama club and youth theatre took part in the show too and North Walsham Community Choir provided pre-recorded backing vocals for some of the songs. Dance for Fun, a local dance troupe for children based in Smallburgh provided the beautiful dance routines from ballet to disco.

Megan Howlett(15), who played Princess Jaelle, auditioned as part of the workshop programme with students of North Walsham High School. The role of Pinocchio was shared by Kyle Adams and Andrew Burrell who were both 11 years old.

The organisation’s Director, Joseph Ballard, had written and directed the show and also took part – in his first role as dame. “Playing dame is a huge responsibility and - dare I say it - I am not the average mature age for a dame yet either so we explored how we could make Mama Gepetto engage with the audience in my own way. With 14 costume changes and our modern interpretations of the traditional pantomime routines, we had the audiences with us all along. I want to heartedly thank everyone involved in making the show a success.”

In response to the positive feedback for its in-house productions, the organisation will be presenting an Easter Family Show of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Norman Lamb calls for fair funding for rural areas

Audience feedback included:

“An excellent show - something for everyone from ballet to soul music and terrific gags.” (Mr Morley from Southrepps)

“We’re so lucky to have this energetic force in our town. All the actors were brilliant and my family and I enjoyed every bit of it – it made our Christmas!” (Mrs Casing from North Walsham).

Following on from the success of its first show in pantomime form in 2014 with Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio was chosen as the key story. Pinocchio is not often performed as a pantomime and the original story is too complex for the Christmas season and family audiences so writer and director Joseph Ballard inserted pirates into the story as the villains and also acted as a hook for engagement of many children.

The show was a key element of the Inspiring Our Town project, an Arts Council England supported programme of developing wider participation for the arts in North Norfolk.

Events coming up this spring include the Best of British Season with films and events, kicking off on 11 February with film Suffragette, which leads through to an Easter Fayre on 26 March and Shakespeare Day on 23 April. More listings can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org and customers are encouraged to pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday) or call 01692 218060 to find out more.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has called on the government to ensure that rural areas get a fair deal on funding.

Earlier this month Mr Lamb co-sponsored a debate in Parliament that called for Council Tax payers in rural areas to be protected from the impact of cuts in government funding for local councils.

“Urban councils get more in government support than rural areas despite the strains being placed on the delivery of vital services by funding cuts. I am particularly worried about the impact on the provision of care. The government risks penalising older people and those most in need of support and many care providers are already struggling to provide the high quality service that people deserve on the funds available,” says Mr Lamb.

The government announced an increase in the Rural Services Delivery Grant before Christmas but this only provides half of the extra support that campaigners say is needed.

A New Year brings with it new hopes and maybe new ears; for new pleasures and revisiting previous delights...

The 2016 FALCON Concerts held at St Andrews Church in Holt, arranged to help raise funds for FALCON (the North Norfolk based arts initiative - Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) and St Andrew's Church Development Fund, are upon us once more. Performers once again are drawn from the pool of young professionals, all ex-pupils from the Purcell School (an international school for young musicians of exceptional talent), who very generously come for expenses only.

And what a wonderful range of concerts are on offer, including, for the first time, a Chamber Orchestra concert, in early July, conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor Peter Stark. This concert is part of an exciting and ambitious School’s Concert project (which, funding permitting, includes a wider programme of related events and activities – composition workshops, children’s art and poetry workshops, exhibitions and competitions, visits to their local libraries), all on the theme of ‘Carnival of the Animals’. And all of which are being developed in partnership with Holt Festival, 5 local Primary School’s (Langham, Holt, Gresham Village, Roughton and The Belfry in Overstrand), the North Norfolk Library Service, the acclaimed local poet and prize

winning children’s author Kevin CrossleyHolland and St. Andrews Church.

The series of concerts began in 2012 and without exception, as anyone who has attended will testify, each has been wonderful, mesmerising and delighting, both old and young, who have been persuaded to pass through St Andrews welcoming doors.

In addition, in August, musicians will again be performing at St Nicholas Church, North Walsham, for, amongst others, the Friday Group, a weekly meeting of people with mental and physical difficulties and disabilities.

The first evening concert is on Saturday, 6 February at 6.30 pm when Juliana Myslov, an exciting young harpist, will be performing a programme with which she has recently toured the Netherlands and recorded on CD. It is a programme, called 'Carpe Noctem', designed to reflect aspects of the night, both its stillness and amazing vibrancy. She hopes, that by the time she comes to play at Holt, the CD will also be available.

Make a note of the date and pass on this information to anyone you think might be

interested. As many already know, the performances can be truly breath-taking, and we are, as always, confident you won't be disappointed…the next concert promises to be no exception. As usual pre-concert drinks will be available, as well as during the interval.

Dates for FALCON concerts in 2016: • Saturday 6 February at 6.30 pm, St Andrews Church, Holt – Juliana Myslov (Harp) Saturday 14 May at 6.30 pm, St Andrews Church, Holt – Anna Hashimoto (clarinet) and Mark Viner (piano) • Wednesday 13 July 6.30 pm, Parnassus Chamber Orchestra ‘Carnival of the Animals’ • Saturday 6 August at 6.30 pm, St Andrews Church, Holt – Emily Ross (Oboe) • Saturday 15 October at 6.30 pm, St Andrews Church, Holt – Francina Moll Salord (violin) and Margalida Moll Salord (piano)

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind

It seems ages since North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind sat down for the annual Christmas Lunch at the Community Centre. The lunch was once again a huge success and many of our old members turned up despite their ailments. We were also entertained by a choir from The Atrium who sang carols, which we could all join in with and. of course, there was the renowned Christmas raffle - what a show of prizes there were this year.

The Committee would like to thank members not only for their support at Christmas but all through the year. They bring gifts for our monthly raffle and again at Christmas. They also support the annual cake bake-off by making cakes and also the second hand clothing stall. Our total fund raising within the Club last year was £542.43. Two of our members also raised £196 at a Christmas Fayre - a special thanks to Stephanie & Kathleen Mace.

Gifts also came from local businesses for raffle prizes and we would like to thank all involved for making the Christmas festivities a great afternoon including East Coast Plastics, North Walsham Lions, Cromer Pavilion Theatre, Waitrose plc North Walsham, Three Cottages Fish Restaurant, Norwich & Peterborough plc, Sainsbury's plc North Walsham, Morrison plc Cromer, Andy Grey Electricals, McColl Newsagents North Walsham, Norwich Sun Blinds and The Round Table. We are so grateful for all the support. We must not forget our very own Cynthia who organised a Christmas Fayre & Bingo for the Club and raised over £600.

Thanks for your support and may we wish you all a very happy New Year.

THE NORTH WALSHAM TIMES WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!

New Local Plan for North Norfolk

North Norfolk District Council has started the process of preparing a new Local Plan.

The Plan will introduce new planning policies, which will be applied in the determination of planning applications and will also include new development sites to address the development needs of the District for the period 2016-2036.

As part of the preparation of the Plan, the Council is carrying out a ‘Call for Sites’.

This provides an opportunity for developers, landowners, individuals and other interested parties to put forward potential sites within North Norfolk District for development. Any sites which are suggested will then be subject to a detailed appraisal process by the Council. The Council will then publish preferred options for consultation. The final site selections will then be included in a draft Plan which will be subject to independent examination before the new Plan can be adopted.

Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said “This is an important stage in the process of preparing the new Plan and the Council is keen to hear from as many people as possible so that we can consider the options that may be available not just for new housing but also other types of development.”

The Call for Sites registration form and guidance notes are available on the council’s website at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/callforsites and all forms should be returned on or before 31 May 2016. 22

Voters asked to refresh their signatures

Letters will be sent this month to people who have voted via postal vote or postal proxy vote for more than five years asking them to refresh their signature.

More than 800 letters will be sent to voters in the district who have been voting by postal vote or postal proxy vote for more than five years asking them to return a form with a fresh signature.

Returning the completed form by 19 February will ensure that they will remain eligible to vote in future elections without having to apply to vote in this way again. Reminder notices will be sent to those who have not returned their form by 9 February.

People are being urged to complete the form before the deadline date 19 February or their right to vote by post will be removed and they will have to reapply to vote in this way.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Democratic Services at North Norfolk District Council said “I would urge people who do exercise their democratic right to vote in this way to return the form if they receive one.

“If people who have been voting by postal proxy or postal vote for more than five years want to carry on voting in this way please return the form rather than having to reapply later on.”

The work is being done to help prevent postal vote fraud and to reflect the natural change in someone’s signature over a five year period.

If people have any questions about the process please contact Electoral Services at register@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call on 01263 516046/516317. North Walsham Times 487 January 30th 2016

The Vicar of Dibley to raise money for comic relief

The hilarious comedy, The Vicar of Dibley will be performed at Sheringham Little Theatre by local amateur actors and actresses who started rehearsing last November. They are all members of the Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, and all the license fees will go to the well-known charity Comic Relief.

Laura Williamson, who lives in West Runton plays the lead role of Geraldine Grainger. Laura who works in Horsham St. Faith and has performed in many productions locally, said that it was her ambition to play the role of Geraldine Grainger.

The script was written by Ian Gower and tells the story of a small Oxfordshire village Parish Council, who are awaiting the arrival of their new vicar. They are amazed, and not altogether pleased when they find that a woman vicar has been appointed. Will Rev Geraldine Grainger be able to make her mark in Dibley or will the eccentricities of the inhabitants of the village prove too much for her? All will be revealed in this rib-achingly funny production.

The production is at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 23 to 27 February and tickets are on sale from the box office on 01263 822347 or online from www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com Ticket prices are £10 and £11.

North Walsham Table Tennis Two Draws as Walsham meets Cromer

There were two North Walsham versus Cromer battles in the Premier Division at North Walsham Sports Centre. A week after recording a 10-0 whitewash against Aylsham A, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Joe Kirkup hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Kirkup’s top-spin winning the opener against Wilson in four. The Backhander beat Price 12-10 in the fourth before later being edged out by the same score by Elliott. Warner took a maximum for the visitors and De Neve beat Kirkup 11-4, 12-14, 11-9, 13-11 however a four set doubles win for the hosts saw the night end in a draw. On the adjoining table, Eric Dolden played up joining the Phil’s Stone and Mole as NWSCD hosted Crosscourt’s Jack Bramwell, John Welsh and Terry Lawes. A 2am working start for Bramwell saw him play his three singles straight off by agreement of both teams and he won the opener 11-9 in the

fifth against Stone in a good counter-attacking game. Welsh also dug out a win in five against Stone and after Lawes had beat Dolden in straight, Crosscourts led 5-2. Mole then completed his maximum with a comfortable win against Welsh before Stone found himself in a ninth consecutive five-set singles in the League! An 11-2 in the decider win against Lawes kept the hosts alive and the two Phil’s won the doubles in straight to end the match as another draw.

In the First Division, Barracuda’s Mike Toye, Keith Register and Ray Amo hosted NWSCC. The visitors found themselves down to a two man team but Richard Porritt and Paul Brown were undefeated, winning 7-3. The closest singles saw Porritt recover from 2-5 down to win the fifth 11-8 against Register after the Barracuda had forced a decider from two down, while the NWSCC duo won the opening

two sets of the doubles from 0-4 before defeating Amo and Register 12-10 in the fourth. NWSCE also played Barracudas with the match finishing as a draw, but lost to Gresham’s School B 8-2.

In the Second Division, Roger Crouch, Nash Panday and John Frye hosted NWSCF’s Edna Stone and Stan and Brenda Baldock with the latter forced to withdraw after pulling a shoulder in her first singles which saw a win in four for Panday. Stone’s consistent returns took a brace with wins in three and four against Crouch and Frye respectively and she teamed up with Stan Baldock for a good doubles win in four against Crouch and Panday; however the hosts won 7-3. George Bolton won his first two singles in the League as NWSCF also played LCC Seals, winning 8-2.
