Loss of her mum inspires Norfolk woman Jessica to run the London Marathon
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Jessica Sanderson took up running as a distraction after the tragic loss of her mum from a heart attack.
Now she is taking part in April’s Virgin London Marathon and is raising funds for national charity Heart Research UK to help in the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease. Jessica, a specialist clinical physiologist from Alby, is running the Virgin London Marathon on April 24 - the day she turns 30 - to raise money for national charity Heart Research UK. Jessica raised over £500 for Heart Research UK when she did the Great North Run last year, and is now aiming to raise over £1,750 for the charity with the support of her family and friends, particularly her husband Paul and her daughter.

Loss of her mum inspires Norfolk woman Jessica to run the London Marathon Continued from front cover...
The cause is one that means a lot to Jessica as she lost her mum, Annie, in 2013 to a heart attack aged 59 the same week she became a mum herself - and took up running to come to terms with her loss. Husband Paul lost his father to a heart attack in spring 2014, making the heart disease cause close to both of them.
She said ‘I took up running to give me time out, away from distractions and it turned into something Jessica finishing last year’s Great North Run I really enjoyed doing. I don’t just think of my mum, I think of all sorts of things and sometimes I think of nothing at all.’
‘Completing the London Marathon would be an amazing achievement and a great way to see in my 30s. After running the Great North Run I wanted to push myself that bit more, and complete a marathon. I really want to make sure my heart is as healthy as it can be and ensure I do what I can to be around for my daughter as long as possible.’
‘Losing family members has really highlighted just how important it is to look after our hearts and so we are all committed to trying to raise awareness and support Heart Research UK in all the fantastic work the charity does to promote heart health in communities and fund research.’ People can donate to Jessica s fundraising on her Virgin Money Giving page www.justgiving.com/JessicaRoseMarathon

Heart Research UK National Director, Barbara Harpham, said ‘Jessica’s mother would be very proud to know that she is running the marathon. I have great admiration for her grit and determination to run the race. Jessica will really be helping hearts in Norfolk as we will make sure that the money she raises will be spent on helping people live healthier, happier, longer lives near her.’

Delicious Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies
With half-term looming it’s time for a recipe that desperate parents can use to burn up a few rainy-day hours – and also create some gorgeous cookies for the whole family to enjoy. They are, importantly, gluten-free, a diet which is becoming more and more prevalent and something which are are very aware of at the Grove. One of our owners’ children, Cameron, is on a GF regime and he absolutely loves the odd slice of head chef Mike West’s legendary gluten-free cheesecake, which comes in various flavours and is completely gorgeous.
We look forward to seeing you soon for dinner – 6-9pm every night! Peanut Butter Flourless 36 cookies 30 min prep (hands on time) 500g peanut butter 300g granulated sugar 110g light brown sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract ½ teaspoon sea salt 1) 2) 3) 4)
NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
Perhaps the most controversial issue facing the government is the funding and future funding of the National Health Service. These concerns were reflected in Tony Belham’s presentation to North Walsham Probus Club last month. Tony, who has been General Manager of the Birchwood Surgery for 15 years was previously employed in the communications industry. He referred to the introduction of the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in April, 2013, replacing the former PCTs, which placed local GPs at the forefront of the service. Opinions may be divided as to whether this gave practitioners the opportunity to shape the service or, with substantial financial constraints, were simply being handed a poisoned chalice. It also coincided with the impending shortage of GPs and an increasing level of patient expectation within the NHS.
Changes in funding have not always favoured rural areas or those with an elderly population, both these factors applying to North Norfolk. The local CCG has been required to save over £9 million in 2015/16 and possibly a similar amount the following year. Despite the success of the North Norfolk CCG, it is envisaged that such savings could only be effected through significant changes to the provision of services.
Inevitably, the cost of drugs raised much discussion. Members suggested that while there is considerable waste insofar that not all the medication prescribed is used, economies might be made by prescribing smaller amounts. They were reminded that patients would incur greater cost in paying for further prescriptions.
Heat over to 175C / gas mark 4 Beat peanut butter and sugars together until light and fluffy Slowly beat in eggs, baking soda, vanilla and salt. Roll the dough into balls and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet about 2” apart. Press the dough flat into about ½ cm thickness. Make a criss cross pattern with a fork on each cookie. Bake for about 10-12 minutes until the edges are set. Leave to cool on racks
Why the shortage of GPs? It was felt that the amount of workload pressure and associated stress, decreasing income, and longer working hours linked to the unrealistic level of expectation made upon the service by politicians and the media were contributory factors. Retired, or semi retired business or professional men who may wish to hear similar talks are welcome to join North Walsham Probus Club, which meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Ted Gadsden

Council Gains Gold in International Employers’ Award North Norfolk District Council Achieves Investors in People Gold Award
North Norfolk District Council has been awarded the Investors in People Gold Award for being an excellent employer.
Inspectors praised the Council’s culture of openness and trust, its socially responsible policies and practices, its approach to learning and development of staff and the work of the council’s staff focus group.
Gold is the highest level of recognition which organisations can achieve and is only given to those that are able to demonstrate a degree of excellence in the way they develop and support their staff.
The international standard has been awarded to the district council following an in-depth assessment carried out in December 2015 in which members of staff were interviewed by two independent assessors.
The report found that the Council had met 180 of 196 indicators and should therefore receive the Investors in People Gold Award. The council had previously been given a ‘bronze’ award by Investors in People in July 2013.

Chief Executive Sheila Oxtoby added “I’m incredibly proud that we’ve achieved this award for the Council and more importantly for the residents and businesses that we serve. I would like to thank all the staff and believe it is well-deserved.”
In the assessors’ letter to the Council they state “The standard is a very challenging one to meet and is increasingly seen as a measure of a quality employer. Your success not only reflects your own commitment, but it is also an acknowledgement of the effort of everyone who works for the organisation.”

The proposed commission has been backed by more than 50 organisations including the NHS Confederation and Royal College of Surgeons. Despite attracting cross-party support, however, the idea was ultimately dismissed by Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, Heidi Alexander, and the Minister of State for Community and Social Care, Alistair Burt.
FREE UNDERLAY, GRIPPER AND DOORBARS
While Ms Alexander cited “fundamental differences” between the political parties, the Government argued that a commission would not be necessary in light of NHS England’s five year plan for rescuing the health service.
Speaking after the debate, Norman Lamb said “Even though impressive Members on both sides spoke in support, it is extremely disappointing to watch the Labour leadership and the Government squander this historic opportunity. We know that the NHS and social care system is facing an existential crisis. My real fear is that elderly people, in particular, will increasingly not get the care they need. The reality is that all parties must join together in a spirit of collaboration, working through their differences to reach an agreement on the best way to tackle these challenges. Despite this, Labour appears to be more concerned with scoring political points, while the Government’s current strategy rests on the ability to deliver savings on a scale that is simply not achievable. I will continue to campaign for this commission with others of a like mind.”

Ensuring our people are equipped to offer a great customer service is crucial and it’s especially pleasing that the Council’s continual improvement has been recognised by the achievement of Investors in People Gold Award.”

Dear Margaret,
The Bluebell Pond Society is a voluntary organisation dedicated to looking after the historic Bluebell Pond.
Back in 1991, NNDC provided a waste bin, which was used by people visiting the pond to deposit their rubbish. For some reason unknown to me, recently NNDC removed the bin, the result being that rubbish is now being thrown in and around the pond. Can we please have our bin back?

Dear Margaret,
RUBBISH NUMSKULLS
Why can't folk dispose of their waste in the receptacles provided or take it home to get rid of it.
We cannot blame it on holidaymakers as there appears to be more rubbish dumped along the roads and lanes in the winter than the summer. Tesco sandwich wrappers and bills dumped within a few yards of their door and bin.
Down the lane behind Mundesley Scout Hall, one can see pop and beer cans, plastic bags and bottles, tobacco wrappers, glass bottles and energy drink cans. It is a pity that the energy is not put into the muscle power needed to carry refuse to dustbins.
Down that lane, some dog walkers take the trouble to pick up their animals mess, very admirable, but why then throw that bag into the trees. This is shocking and disgraceful and this decoration offends. Some councils want to record dog DNA to be able to prosecute owners who do not discard mess properly, what a great idea. One wonders if it could be suggested that everyone’s DNA is taken with a view to prevent these indiscretions. Derek

‘Race to Rio’ with Crayford and Abbs
Our objective is to raise over £5,000 between February and the end of April for the Paralympic association in conjunction with a national Nissan Fundraising initiative.
We hope to achieve this by encouraging runners, cyclists and swimmers in North Norfolk (who record their mileages electronically and weekly) to complete in miles, the distance from North Norfolk to Rio - 5,876 miles and then match, via corporate and individual sponsorship a £1 per mile covered to raise over £5,000.
As an incentive for all competing athletes, we have a corporate hospitality box at the O2 Arena during this summer and the highest performing, cyclist, runner and swimmer and their partners, will be invited to join us, in our box, as our guests. We are delighted to confirm that Paralympics gold medal Swimme,
Jessica-Jane Applegate, from Belton, near Great Yarmouth, will be our ambassador for this event and will be visiting Bodham on the 13th February. Jessica competed in the London 2012 Paralympics and won Gold in the 200m freestyle and came fourth in the 100m backstroke. Her other achievements include the 2012 British disability champion in 200m freestyle and four gold medals at the 2013 British Gas International. We are also delighted to announce local boxer Ryan Walsh, British Featherweight champion, is adding his support to our cause. It is our aim to manage and co-ordinate a fun, rewarding and safe event, whilst raising a minimum of £5,876 for the Paralympic Association. Raising funds for the British Paralympic Association is a fantastic

opportunity to make a difference to the ParalympicsGB team and directly contribute to the performances of ParalympicsGB athletes in Rio. Not only this, but your money will also go a long way to inspiring a shift in perceptions of disabled people and the things they can achieve.
To also help raise funds, we will be holding a Gala Dinner with a guest speaker and auction at The Links Hotel, West Runton, on the 30th April and tables for this event are now on sale. Better Services, Better Value for Money – DWP at Council Offices
Better services and better value for money will result from the Department for Work and Pensions move to North Norfolk District Council’s offices in Holt Road, Cromer.
The 14-strong team moved into the building on Monday 11 January and started to run their services from the Council offices on the same day.
A total of 170 m2 office space was created by moving teams within the existing building and reducing the need for storage space. This has enabled the DWP to have their own public waiting area, and for DWP clients to use the Council’s self-serve computers to access services directly.
The DWP’s move from Garden Street offices in Cromer provides an opportunity to bring services together in one location. It will also help to reduce the cost of services by sharing the building. Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets said “As an authority we have to make the most of the resources we have, especially our offices. I’m delighted to be welcoming the Department for Work and Pensions to our offices in Holt Road.
“We know we need to operate as cost-effectively as possible, and sharing our office space is a good way to generate income and provide customers with a more joined up service. With the public services under one roof my hope is that it will be a lot easier for people to get the support they need.” Julia Nix, District Manager for the Department for Work and Pensions said “This is my second co location site to move into North Norfolk District Council’s Premises. By moving into the Local Authorities premises we willbe making more effective use of space and facilities, while making significant savings for the taxpayer. “The move also represents an excellent opportunity for DWP to build stronger working links with North Norfolk District Council to work together to help our customers move closer to employment and provide a better all-round quality service”. The Council office building, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month, houses Norfolk County Council Children’s Services, the Early Years Intervention Team and eastlaw – the Council’s legal services company which sells its services to others.

Kingfisher Kids Club goes from strength to strength
One year on and Kingfisher Kids Club continues to expand their childcare facility they now have a baby room as well as a pre-school room and welcome children into their setting from the age of 0 – 13 years.
‘After recognising the demand for two year old care, and the availability of this type of provision within our area, the need for flexible and wraparound childcare has been highlighted. Our vision was to increase our provision into full day care and provide for children from 0 – 13 years, offering breakfast, afterschool, holiday care as well as a room for children under 2, an area for children 2 -3 and another area for children 3 -5 and integrate the children up to the age of 13. This would solve a huge
problem for parents and carers in North Walsham. At last this is something we have managed to achieve. We have recruited three new staff to join our current team and are open from 7.30am – 6pm daily.
Our prices start at £3 per hour and we have availability for 2, 3 and 4 year old children receiving funding. We take a variety of Nursery Vouchers and are Ofsted registered for families receiving tax credits.
To celebrate our achievements we are holding an Open Day on Saturday 27 February from
10am – 2pm. The children can join in story time, do a craft, and complete a cooking activity as well as exploring all the resources and activities we have on offer.
Refreshments will be provided at lunchtime and all children attending will receive a free book to help celebrate National Book Week.
Come along and enjoy the fun. For more information or to book sessions for your children call 01692 405555’.

Swimathon is the world’s biggest fundraising swimming event with thousands of people jumping into pools around the UK. You can choose from 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k individual distances. Laser hair removal just got better
Try the latest, fastest, painless and most effective hair removal laser at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. With up to 30% off during February there is no reason not to!
According to the latest research in hair removal, women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. It is no surprise then that a large number of people are turning to a long lasting solution for unwanted hair.
At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FPCert BCAAM treats patients not only from Norfolk, but also surrounding counties and abroad. True to his philosophy of offering best treatments and technologies he has invested in the best technology for laser hair removal.
We see patients in all age groups, both sexes and gender reassignment cases. We all realise the physical impact of unwanted hair, but when we dig a bit deeper it is quite heart wrenching to hear some stories. Often there is lack of awareness of laser hair removal and how effective it is.
Coltishall Clinic now has not one, but five different lasers for hair removal. One laser cannot work best for everyone. Hence, we have decided to have a range of lasers to provide best results to our patients and clients. Says clinic manager Trish.
How do we choose your laser? - we consider your skin type, hair type and body area to treat and then decide which machine will work best for
you. You do need to have a proper consultation for laser hair removal. We also see people who can have medical reasons for hair growth and further testing or issues may need to be considered.
What about the pain and speed! It is not painful; sensation is just like snap from a rubber band. A cool gel is used with IPL and cool spray with our laser, which is incredibly fast and allows us to treat a full back or lower or upper legs in less than 40 minutes. It is very safe and offers unmatched results. You can watch a video of this laser on our website.
To book an appointment call 0800 0430737 or log on to www.coltishallclinic.co.uk
Masons help Cromer Charity back on the road The Baring Lodge of Freemasons has presented Cromer-based charity About With Friends, a cheque for £525 to launch the fund to replace their fullyaccessible minibus.
About With Friends, who offer people with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose, run a range of services for people from the age of eight upwards. This includes social activities, respite breaks, supported living, and their ground-breaking Workskills programme where adults with learning disabilities are supported in commercial work ventures.
Baring Lodge now meets at Sheringham Masonic Centre but its roots are very much in Cromer. Founded in 1896 in the long gone Tuckers Hotel, the name Baring comes from the family who owned Cromer Hall for many years. The Lodge met in a succession of Cromer venues until 1986 when it moved to Sheringham. It has quietly been a part of the Cromer community and continues to support local and national charities, whilst maintaining its Masonic history and traditions.
The current minibus has clocked up more than 90,000 miles over the past six years and is due for replacement. As well as running staff, volunteers and members of the charity around, it is also used in the community to pick up
people for the lunch clubs that About With Friends run for the Over 55s and similar events. With a wheelchair lift on the back the minibus is a vital part of the charity’s fleet and will cost about £32,000 to replace so the gift from the Freemasons is a very welcome start to the fund.

The picture shows the Master of the Lodge, Roy Chadwick, accompanied by Richard Longley, Past Master presenting the cheque to Richard French, a Workskills member. Richard is wearing regalia (a Collar and Apron) borrowed from the Master. Also pictured are Workskills members Keara Dougan, Jonathan Chamberlen and Stuart Phillips

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As well as several more kittens and young adults finding new homes since the last article our two oldest cats Bertie and Belle (12 years young) have also left for pastures new. It is fortunate that over 20 cats and kittens found new homes in January as, although we have been able to take some of the cats in from the waiting list, we need to have the two large pens at Dilham empty for a short while for essential maintenance work. The work should only take a few days so no doubt they will be back in operation by the next article.
Last time, we also mentioned the little blind girl and said that we were waiting the results of blood tests. These have now come back and we were pleased to learn that Rosie (previously Nala) is not suffering from any of the age related illnesses. David believes that the blindness is probably the result of another problem which cannot be treated. She has now settled in her new home and lives in a bedroom with her food and water bowls and litter tray nearby. She quickly found her way round the room and always uses the litter tray. Fortunately, her hearing is still good and she has, on occasion, ventured out of her special place to Grooming Parlour explore a little further. She is a very happy little cat and Full Grooming & just loves all the Hydrobathing attention she is now Kerstin Rogers Available receiving; even 01692 501212 though she is quite old and we do not 07817 179228 know for how long debonairdogs@btinternet.com

her new family will have her, we are sure she will get the very best of care and lots of love.
As most people who use Lyngate Road are aware, Sharon sells goods to raise money for the cats in care at her gate. Last year, although we mentioned that some articles had been stolen from the stall, she still managed to raise ÂŁ450 to add to our funds. We would like thank Sharon for all her hard work and also everyone who purchased goods, for their support. Sharon has advised that sales of goods will recommence in earnest once the weather improves. We look forward to your continued support.

Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 20 May
Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 20 May whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting eight friends and asking them to donate an additional £5 means you will raise at least £40 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Just £50 could contribute towards the support from our Peer Support Service for one hour, in a district general hospital or Major Trauma Centre. 22
In 2016 we want to make the batter matter and raise £40,000 from everyone holding suppers. Last year we raised £12,000 from the suppers. The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications, which enable and encourage paralysed people to rebuild lives after spinal cord injury.
Every year in the UK over 1000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Manager, Elizabeth Wright, says “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging
people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.
For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 071 4350 or email fundraising@siafishandchips.co.uk or visit www.siafishandchips.co.uk

Why English law is good
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Two recent but very different events have led me to write this article on how lucky we all are to have the English legal system. The first was, prosaically, a seminar on European succession law (in Norwich) and the other was reading an article on current problems with the Indian legal system (in India).
Let me start closest to home. The European Succession Regulations, which came in this August, and to which the UK has not signed up, allow a national of an EU state to choose the law which should govern the administration of their estate upon death. In addition to the forced-heirship rules, other foreign anomalies worth noting are: that marriage does not revoke a Will (including in Scotland, where the birth of a first child can do so); that in Italy lifetime gifts to children must be brought into account in distributing the estate upon death; and, that one can sign to forgo one’s inheritance (never straight-forward in fact and law, especially where some time has elapsed). Whereas one can request that English law applies to ones assets in other EU countries, because many civil law countries do not recognise trusts, seeking to apply an English Will containing a trust to EU assets may be complex and incur a double tax charge.
So, what about India? Well, when the British left India in 1947, amongst the systems and structures that ‘we’ left behind was that of the
English legal system. However, in the 69 years since then there has been much divergence. The legal principles remain but the Indian Courts and the implementation of the decisions, apparently, leave much to be desired. On the principle of ‘justice delayed is justice denied’ the Indian system would appear to be failing. It takes years for a case to be heard and the system has become unwieldy and inefficient. Nine judges sit on cases heard in their Supreme Court and all nine of them give a judgement. Such judgements, when published, are sometimes as long as 900 pages for a single case. As cases take so long to be heard and even longer for the decisions to be enforced, there is a tendency for litigants to take matters into their own hands rather than wait any longer for justice to be delivered.
The English legal system is a high earner for the English economy. Litigants and companies from overseas come here to use our legal systems and our Courts. Rather than the codified rigid laws of Civil Law countries, we have the concept of ‘equity’, which combined with our law of trusts and flexibility in relation to Wills and property management, make our system highly desirable.
Yes, there is much to improve here in England. Our legal system is creaking with antiquated IT in the Courts and the threat of closure of our some Courts (King’s Lynn, being our local

New Chairman at North Norfolk UKIP
Sheringham Players Spring Production
Retiring Chairman Terry Comber spoke about the progress that UKIP had made during his five year tenure. Membership of the Branch had increased three fold, two County Councillors had been elected and, most importantly, a referendum on our membership of the European Union had been secured.
To set off 2016, their spring production comprises an evening of two one act plays under the title “Practise Makes Perfect” and both are based around events that do not always go according to plan.
At North Norfolk UK Independence Party’s recent annual general meeting Jack Smith was elected Chairman, Irene Ramsbotham Secretary. Gina Foster Membership Secretary and David Ramsbotham Treasurer.
After a very successful 2015, putting on a variety of plays which played to full houses and much acclaim, Sheringham Players are preparing for another year of drama, mystery, murder, comedy and mayhem.
The first play, written by Lee Fewitt and directed by Hazel Randall, is entitled ‘Is There Anybody There?’, a drama set in late Victorian London where Mrs Carrington, a blind clairvoyant, summons the spirits for those who are willing to pay. Tonight, however, when one of the party is possessed by the spirit of a murdered girl strange happenings occur, when doors are locked and time stands still. Is it for real or are they being deceived? And is there a link to other murders that have happened in the area? Could any of those present be the suspect, or are there darker forces at work? Who is the killer? Will all be revealed, or will the spirits keep their secrets?
Jack Smith was delighted and honoured to be elected Chairman. He spoke of his determination to continue to progress the Party, both locally and nationally in preparation for the vote on the EU.
County Councillor David Ramsbotham said that he was very pleased with Jack Smith’s appointment adding “Jack is only 24 years old – hopefully this will convince everyone that we are not a Party of old fogies but the youngsters of Britain are also keen to protect the future prosperity, security, sovereignty, democracy, culture and way of life of our proud nation”.
To join UKIP please contact Gina Foster on 01263 712810 or e-mail gina.foster2015@gmail.com
Photograph taken at the AGM of the retiring chairman, Terry Comber on the left congratulating the new chairman Jack Smith on the right
The second play, written by Paul Reakes and directed by Tim Travers, is entitled Bang! You’re Dead! and is a comedy mystery thriller. Lydia and her boyfriend Marcus rehearse the murder of Theo, Lydia’s husband, which they are to commit that evening. When the victim and “perfect witness” arrive all goes according to plan except that the wrong person ends up dead. A ghastly mistake - or are there some deviations from the original plot?
The performance runs from Thursday 17 - Saturday 19 March at Sheringham Little Theatre at 7.30pm and tickets are now available from the Box Office on 01263 822347 priced at £10.

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Mole &Co Dig out of a Hole
The new look handicap competitions got underway this week with the first round of the Handicap Doubles Cup. The new format sees players given a numerical handicap between 0 for the very best players and 29 for Novices – the difference between the two is then reset (in doubles the pairs handicaps are averaged) so that the better player starts on zero.
At the ACT Centre, Aylsham A’s Dave Johns (14), Owain Atthill (20) and Peter Ward (13) hosted NWSCD’s Jack Morton (15), Philip Stone (13) and Phil Mole (13) in a game where the handicaps were near enough even, with the hosts usually having starts of between 2-4 points and the visitors on a couple of occasions given a one point advantage. Despite effectively playing up a division, Atthill played well all night and to his credit did not look at all out of place amongst his top-tiered team-mates. A feature of the match especially in the first half was that NWSCD made some appalling starts while Aylsham A played solidly, before the visitors found themselves working hard to claw back the deficits – but the nature of the new one set to 35 system (best of nine to decide the tie) meant that they had time to do just that. Ward and Johns won the opener 35-28 against Mole and Morton before the
two Phils saved eight match-points before losing on the sudden death 34-34 one point play-off as Atthill and Ward moved the hosts 2-0 ahead. Morton and Stone pulled one back for NWSCD with a 35-27 win against Johns and Atthill before Atthill and Ward beat Morton and Mole 35-17. A key contest followed in the fifth as Johns and Ward looked good to move Aylsham A one win from victory at 4-1 up, but Morton and Stone pulled back an eight point deficit in the second half of the contest to edge the win 35-33 before luck played its part as Mole and Stone beat Johns and Atthill by the same score to tie proceedings at 3-3. Morton and Stone remained unbeaten as a pairing as they put NWSCD ahead for the first time in the match with a 35-20 win against Atthill and Ward. Johns and Atthill led the eighth clash against Morton and Mole 19-8 as an intriguing deciding last battle between Johns and Ward and the two Phils that would have started on evens looked to be on the cards, however two things made the difference here which were the change of receivers and some incredible athleticism from Morton as the NWSCD pairing POOL 1 rallied to win 35-31 Water too cold and seal their 5-3 Too crowded Lack of privacy
win. Also in the first round NWSCA beat Dropshots 5-0 and NWSCC won 7-2 against Aylsham C but NWSCF fell 0-5 to Barracudas.
NWSCD were also in action in the Premier Division with Mary Sawyer taking the place of Morton and failing to convert two match-points as she lost from two up to Whil De Neve as the team travelled to Cromer Tennis Club to play Backhanders. The unexpected arrival of the builders and a lack of power (the table tennis hut: mark 3 – coming soon!) meant the match was switched to the squash court and on a freezing cold night outside Backhanders were red hot inside winning 10-0. Stone looked to be heading for his tenth consecutive five set singles match in the League, but ended his own peculiar brand of torment the self inflicted way by serving off against Teucer Wilson at match-point 9-10 down in the fourth!
