Seeking Old Scouts A call has gone out for Norfolk residents to search through their family photographs, and question their grandparents or even great grandparents for the challenge of the century.
The aim is to find the oldest surviving Cub Scout or Wolf Cub in Norfolk, as 2016 sees the Cub Scouts celebrate their 100th anniversary.
J’s WEDDING CARS
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
Norfolk Scouts also want former Cub Leaders who live in Norfolk to get in touch so that they can be invited to a Grand Howl on 25th November.
They want to make this an anniversary to remember for the 2000 Cub Scouts across Norfolk.
Scouting history goes back to Robert BadenPowell, a soldier, artist, actor and free-thinker, who was the founder of Scouting in 1907. His first camp on Brownsea Island brought together 20 boys from a variety of backgrounds. The success of the camp spurred him on to write what would become a classic book of the 20th century, Scouting for Boys.

Scouting soon became a global phenomenon and with numbers growing, it quickly became clear that young people of all ages wanted to get involved. Baden-Powell recognised that a junior section was needed back in 1914 and published his outline for such a scheme, calling it Wolf Cubbing. It was not until 1916 that Wolf Scouts was established for younger Scouts and Rover Scouts for the older boys. Baden-Powell wanted the junior scheme to have its own distinct name, uniform and programme.
Baden-Powell asked his friend Rudyard Kipling for the use of his Jungle Book as a motivational frame in Cub Scouting and TEL:- 01263 587579 in 1917 Baden-Powell wrote a new book, www.jweddingcars.co.uk The Wolf Cub's Handbook, for the new Wolf Cubs 34 –40 Station road, Sheringham 01263 823258 section. Wolf Cubs blythwright@btconnect.com were renamed Cub www.blythandwright.co.uk Scouts in 1967 and are still going strong.

The County Commissioner Nickie Chapman, and Tony Milburn, the Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs in Norfolk have
launched the Cubs 100 Challenge, offering the chance for boys and girls to earn the Norfolk County Cub Challenge Badge to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting. The badge is a multi-part badge with an “Achieved” Arc. The badge design is a wolf’s paw print. Each toe of the paw print is worth 25 points and is awarded once a Cub Scout completes one of the four sections.
The sections are: Get Active, Adventure Camping, Look Around You and Down the Cub Hut! The Cubs can choose various activities from each section to earn points ranging from 2–10 to gain their unique badge. Norfolk Scouts have organised an “It’s a Knockout” Competition with the final in July and all Cubs will be receiving a 100th Anniversary woggle.
Nickie Chapman said: “Creating programmes that will be exciting and challenging for all Norfolk Cubs has been our main aim and the activities are designed to offer a more taxing and adventurous Cub Scouting experience to both boys and girls.
“Yes, Cub Scouts is not just for boys, it is for girls as well. I find that a lot of parents still just think Cubs and Scouting in general is only for boys, but we have, in Norfolk, sections which have girls outnumbering the boys. It is worth highlighting we also have young people with disabilities and special needs. Scouting truly is ‘For All’.
“Cub Scouts is for young people aged 8 to 10½ and operates all over Norfolk. This Cubs 100 challenge is open to all young people, even if they join next week.”
Norfolk Scouts can be contacted on 01603 502246 or email hq@norfolkscouts.org.uk

tender to the point of falling apart take out of the stock and leave to cool.
Reduce the rest of the stock down with the port or red wine until thick and dark in colour. Then dice your shallots and sweat down with the butter and garlic. When your onions are cooked add your stock to the mix.
Flake down your lamb shoulder picking out the fatty pieces and placing into a bowl. Add your shallot mixture and slowly fold together adding seasoning to taste.
Once all is mixed in lay your clingfilm on the work surface and roll your mix into a cylinder shape and place on a tray to firm up in the fridge.
Once firm slice in a portion and pan sear and warm through.....
.... then eat and enjoy!

Pancake Day was enjoyed by all at Worstead Pre-school!
Firstly the children made the batter, then the pancakes were cooked. The children added their choice of filling and tucked in, whilst talking about why we have Shrove Tuesday.
Lastly the children all had a pancake race -
lots of happy, full, but exhausted children!
We are taking names for children who wish to join us in the academic year September 2016 - July 2017. Please telephone Sue on 01692 535692.

A BLUE TIT’S TALE
I’m a very busy blue tit, I keep a tidy nest, My partner’s getting friendly And becoming quite a pest! I know that it is springtime And I should do my ‘bit’ But I’m fed up with this ‘baby’ lark So I’m giving it a miss. I plan to put my feet up, My feathers need a curl. There’s a blackbird winking at me So I might give him a whirl!! ‘Ouch’ my partner has just pecked me So I’ve pushed him off the nest, I’m fed up with male blue tits, Staying single will be best!

the 20th century's most influential and tragic women.
Twenty year old Paris Chandler is stepping into the starring role of Argentinian First Lady Eva Peron.
And younger sister Chloe, 17, plays Peron’s mistress who is ousted by the upwardly-mobile, actress turned political reformer Eva.
The sister act in Sheringham Little Theatre's Evita show is not unusual for the showbizzy siblings.
The Aylsham pair have regularly been seen on stage at the town's high school drama productions – both of them taking leading roles in recent years – and also help mum Jo Chandler run her West End Experience events for would-be young stage stars.
Paris, who is waiting to start an English Literature degree at the UEA said she was intoxicated by the songs and story of Evita, which told the story of a strong woman, who was “sassy, independent and ambitious” and rose from the streets to political power.
They are just two of 40 young cast and crew members, aged from eight to 21, in the sixth youth production staged by the theatre as part of its community role to encourage young people to get involved in the performing arts.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the youth productions aimed to give opportunities for talented young people in North Norfolk to “make friends, learn theatre and social skills, work as a team, and gain self confidence.”
• Evita runs at the Sheringham Little Theatre from April 2- April 9 (7.30pm nightly except April 3, plus a 2.30pm matinee on April 9). Tickets via the box office 01263 822347 or visit sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Local voices must be heard in national review of flood defences
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has asked the government to make sure local people have the chance to have a say in a planned review of flood defences.
Environment Secretary Liz Truss announced the setting up of a National Resilience Review before Christmas. The Review will examine the best way
10
to cope with flooding risks in the future.
"As the MP for a constituency with a near 50 mile stretch of coastline, extensive inland waterways and significant areas of low-lying land I believe it is critically important that the government is fully focused on the need to protect communities from
the risk of flooding," says Norman Lamb.
"I have asked the government to clarify the timetable for the review and to make clear how communities and local councils can have their say. It's vital that people living in places like North Norfolk can make their voices heard."

Probate Law One of the most frequent situations I find in the contested probate law field is where there has been a second (or third) marriage and the husband or wife (or both) have children from their previous marriages. For whatever reason, the husband and wife prepare Wills, perhaps later in their lives, and exclude a child. It is remarkable how often this happens. You can understand how such a situation may arise. There are family disagreements and as the child grows up, becomes an adult and has their own life, they become distant and disconnected from their parent.
That child may have had the expectation all through their life that they would inherit money from mum or dad and it is not until the last Will and Testament is read that the child finds out that they are excluded. They are then looking for advice about what they can do next. When a client like this came to me recently, the first thing we did was examine the Will. As a specialist contested probate solicitor, I am looking to see if the Will might, for some reason, be invalid. Many are, particularly if they are DIY internet wills or prepared by an online Will Writer. It is easy to get the signing of a Will wrong and this is a way to show it is invalid. I consider the signature and the signatures of the witnesses. I will also start to ask questions about the
circumstances of the drafting of the Will and who was present , for example, was it the person who stands to benefit who acted as a witness. In this case, everything appeared to be in order and a Will prepared up by a solicitor is likely to be done correctly.
I also look to see whether there has been a possibility of undue influence, although this can be difficult to prove. It is possible to overturn a Will if it is clear it has been made under duress. Questions can then be asked about the capacity of the person. Did they understand what they were doing? Was there any dementia or depression?
In this case, all those issues seemed to be in order and the Will appeared to be valid. The next aspect to look at is whether there is an Inheritance Act claim. This is where the Will did not give reasonable financial provision to someone who might have expected it, for example, a spouse or partner or a child or dependant. A claim can be brought in those circumstances. In the case I was advising on, the child was now an adult and she was working and supporting herself comfortably. Unfortunately, there was not anything else she could do to challenge what seemed to her to be an unfair situation. The lesson to draw from this? I think it is to talk to your family, be as open as possible
North Walsham Times 489 February 27th 2016
about your Will and what you want to happen with your assets. It should not have been a surprise to this client and it was only after her father died that she discovered her ideas of what would be left to her were wrong. She, perhaps, could have been saved a lot of heartache if she had only known in advance, hard as that might have been at the time.
In other cases, we succeed in overturning wills or making Inheritance Act claims, but after the event it takes a lot of hard work and time to deal with such situations, which could be avoided. At Clapham & Collinge we can provide you with all of the necessary information, support an d legal advice on Will disputes and how they can be resolved. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Last year, of the 219 cats which came into care, 128 were kittens under 6 months old. This meant that 128 kittens were either unwanted by their owners or were born to mother cats that were strays or feral.
We therefore feel that, with Spring just around the corner, it is an appropriate time to remind everyone that there is help available from us to get their cats neutered. We have been running a special campaign since last April, but, having been contacted by people recently who were unaware of this who would have contacted us sooner had they known, we feel now is the time to advise you all of what help is available from us.
All contact for help should initially be made to the neutering line, 07880 256948. If you are on a low income or benefits and have one or two cats, you can apply under our special scheme “get your cat neutered for £5”. Irene, who deals with the calls on this line, will be able to advise whether you are eligible and where to send the money if you are. On receipt of this, we will e-mail the appropriate vets to confirm that you have paid and that a voucher or vouchers to cover the cost is being sent to them. This offer is only available to be used with the vets with whom
Westover Vets
With the days drawing out, our cats, who have often been quieter during the colder months (they aren’t daft!) start venturing outside a bit more. With this change from winter to spring unfortunately comes an increase in some of the injuries and accidents we see at the vets. Cat fights become more common as do road traffic accidents, which are the biggest threat to our feline friends these days.
Our case this month is Baker a 1 year old domestic short haired cat. He was brought in to our surgery by a member of the public who had seen

we hold accounts, namely, Bridge at Wroxham, Westover in North Walsham, Glaven in Holt, and Miramar in Sheringham. Although the offer if for a maximum of 2 cats per household, you can still get help with any additional cats as we also have the fixed price vouchers at £40 for females and £25 for males.
We have, in recent weeks, had sightings of a “new cat” in our garden and because he is in good condition thought he was new to the neighbourhood and finding his way around. We have now discovered that, although new to the town, he has strayed some considerable distance from his home and, as a consequence, we are now trying to gain his trust with food placed in a cat trap (one is also being set in a neighbour’s garden) to help reunite him with his owner. Feeding a cat in other instances would only entice and encourage it away from its home, which can be very distressing for the family whose cat it is.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. him hit by a car. As is unfortunately often the case the driver did not stop, but Baker was lucky that a kind passer by stopped to help him. Once he was admitted and stabilised x-rays revealed that he had fractured his femur. Fortunately Baker is microchipped so his owners were contacted immediately and kept updated on his progress. Too often animals are brought in by members of the public and without microchips it can be very difficult to trace their owners to ensure they are kept in the picture regarding treatment options. In Bakers case his owners were keen for him to have surgery and the following day our orthopaedic surgeon, Mike Sims, successfully fixed his fractured leg. Being such a young cat he has recovered very quickly and is back on all four legs, hopefully with a bit more road sense than before!
Not only is microchipping a very sensible idea in cats and dogs, but it is about to become a legal requirement in England for all dogs as of April this year. If you would like any more information please contact the surgery on 01692 403202. Toby Morrell MRCVS, Westover Veterinary Centre

Tales from the pulpit
In February North Walsham Mothers’ Union were pleased to welcome the Rev. Simon Lawrence as our guest speaker. Simon began by telling us a little about his route to the ministry. As a young boy he was taken by his aunt to Sunday School each week which he enjoyed (as did his parents!). When he was six years old he joined the choir and then various youth groups. He was about 10 years old when he felt the call to be ordained and it was on a visit to a church that he picked up a pamphlet that explained how to become ordained and named St Johns College in Nottingham as the ideal place to study. Ultimately, with the Bishop’s blessing, that was where he was able to go.
However, at age 16 he was too young to begin his studies in Nottingham
and was advised to continue his education. When he was 17 he took a holiday job in a psychiatric hospital, which he really enjoyed and so went on to train as a psychiatric nurse. It wasn’t until he was 25 that he finally realized his dream and began his training for the ministry.
Simon shared some amusing anecdotes about his years as a curate and also some of the more worrying events that he has had to deal with since being ordained. As well as ministering to his own parish Simon is Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union and also holds the post of Rural Dean. With his very busy schedule we were very appreciative of his visit and hope that he will be able to join us again in the not too distant future.
New members and visitors are always welcome to join us, we meet in St Nicholas Room on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.30 pm. For further information contact Ann on 01692 402705
Paralympic Star Launches Nissan Dealership’s Fundraiser
A London 2012 Paralympic Gold Medallist has helped a north Norfolk Nissan dealer kick-off a major fundraiser for the British Paralympic Association.
Abbs Nissan, said: “We had a fantastic turnout for the event which just goes to show what an incredible inspiration Jessica-Jane and her fellow Paralympians are to so many.
As part of Nissan’s relationship with the British Paralympic Association, Paralympics GB star Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE, who won gold in the S14 200m freestyle, visited Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Holt to officially launch its fundraising campaign which aims to raise thousands to help send ParalympicsGB’s athletes to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
While at the Gypsies Lane dealership, she took time to meet local schoolchildren and aspiring athletes and to chat to them about her preparations for Rio 2016.
She also met some of the many dealer staff, customers and friends who, as part of the fundraiser, will run, swim and cycle 5,876 miles – the distance between north Norfolk and Rio – by April 30th.
“It was particularly pleasing to see so many young people with dreams of following in Jessica-Jane’s footsteps visiting the showroom to chat to her.”
Jessica-Jane Applegate MBE said: “It’s always great to meet young people with a passion for swimming and Paralympic sport in general.
The proceeds will be combined with money raised by Nissan and its dealers nationwide and will help to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s bid for sporting glory in Rio. Nissan is the Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
The first Club Meeting of 2016 was held on 28th January when Crystal Dyball entertained us with six floral interpretations of "Can You Just" along with her unique humour and banter which is always guaranteed to lift spirits in January.
Our February meeting is our AGM but on March 24th Adele Kent will be demonstrating six arrangements with the theme of "The Flower Club Committee" which should be interesting for those of us in office!

History brought to life in the Nelson Room
Pupils from North Walsham Junior School recently visited the Nelson Room at Paston Sixth Form College.
All of the pupils experienced some real hands on history when studying Nelson. Pupils spent time studying letters, paintings and a range of artifacts linked to Nelson. Their enthusiasm for the exercise was encouraged by the chance to win a Paston Bear. The three winners Teejay Baylis, Josie Fryer and Harvey Haysman, all collected the most information from the investigation of all the items in the historic Nelson Room.
Kevin Grieve, Principal at Paston, said “the pupils had a wonderful afternoon examining the historical documents associated with Nelson. It was brilliant to see their Teejay Baylis, Josie Fryer enthusiasm to learn and gain and Harvey Haysman knowledge about Nelson. They produced some outstanding work and are a credit to their school.

Each person with MS, regardless of the type and course of the illness, must adapt continuously to changing symptoms. The possible effect psychologically even for the most positive and confident of people can at times be extremely stressful.
Helping to relieve symptoms of stress and boost confidence levels are an integrative part of managing long term health conditions and help to maintain a healthy mental well-being. The physical and emotional consequences of MS - coping with symptoms, changes to lifestyle, the uncertainty of the condition - can be a major source of stress for some people and can affect one’s symptoms. With this in mind the following services are now available:
One to one psychological support is available to those with MS and their family. This support allows you to “offload” in a safe and confidential environment. For those who are unable to travel, home visits can be arranged.
Monthly Cognitive based Mindfulness workshops which run alongside a coffee and a chat morning based at the Sheringham Community Centre. This is on the last Thursday of each month from 10am to 12 pm. The mindfulness workshop is from 10am to 10.30am. Mindfulness approaches can help to improve emotional well-being and quality of life

Elite Care VACANCIES
Based in Cromer Norfolk we have 2 vacancies one for a full-time position and one-part time position for domiciliary support workers.
This is not an easy job but it is an extremely rewarding role. You will be undertaking the support of vulnerable adults within the community. This involves every aspect of their needs - personal care, emotional support, companionship, shopping, assistance with eating, medication etc.
This is also an extremely skilled position, care workers are no longer unqualified individuals. Nowadays they work alongside the other disciplines within the community and are required to have a number of skills as directed by the care quality commission. These include moving and handling training, medication training, health and safety training. Anyone undertaking this employment must be a dedicated individual and genuinely want to do the work, it is not a light hearted undertaking.
The work varies from a days’ worth of pop-in visits, to longer sits, to live in and night sits. A car is essential, we cover North Walsham, Mundesley, Gimmingham, Cromer, the Runtons and Sheringham as well as villages within and around the surrounding area. Experience is preferred although we would give full training to the right individual. No criminal records are accepted and the hours available can be as few as 8, or as many as 40 plus.
In acknowledgement of the wonderful work our staff undertake we pay above the rate of any of our competitors. We also pay time and a half all Bank Holidays, we pay 5 weeks holiday a year (full time employees) and mileage. I believe this work ideally suits the 45 plus age group but younger individuals would be considered. We have vacancies for both female and male care workers.
If you are interested please contact Tee Carver directly on 07591 686812 between 9 and 5pm and leave a message with your name and contact number or email tee@theecccltd.com

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
It seems a long while since I last wrote in the North Walsham Times, but North Walsham In Bloom have on the whole not been very active since Christmas – not even the weeds have been growing. We have however had a major problem with Dog Poo. We fully indorse the proposed new ideas of specified dog areas in the Park and perhaps other places, but this will not have any impact on our prime concern which is of course the Church grounds.
The people who do not clear up after their dogs in this area will not use the places set aside for them. The situation is now a lot worse than it ever has been in the ten years I have been associated with In Bloom. At the beginning of January it was decided that we could not tend to the dry bed in the Churchyard. The dog poo was so imbedded in the grasses in that area that none of the ladies who help us were prepared to work there. We will now have to wait until the grasses die off further and deal with the problem then.
We are hoping to have a meeting with North Walsham Town Council and the Parochial Church Council and see what we can come up with. If nothing is done, the walking of dog poo into the Church itself is certainly a possibility. Perhaps some form of observation system can be agreed upon. This is a very serious problem for us and could well have future implications for our work in this area.

Could your rabbit be at risk of Bladder and Kidney Stones?
At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we are proud of our recent ‘Rabbit Friendly Practice’ award and would like to share Bodleys’ story.
Bodley was referred to Toll Barn Vets by another veterinary practice when he stopped eating. His owner was understandably very concerned so we started investigating immediately. Just an hour later we had the answer from our own in-house lab – the blood tests showed Bodley’s kidneys weren’t functioning properly and the x-rays and ultrasound scans revealed the reason for this was stones causing blockages within both kidneys and ureters (the tube running from the kidney to bladder).
Treatment was started immediately with IV fluids, antibiotics and surgery to remove the stones causing blockages in both the kidneys and the ureters. After several days of intensive care from our dedicated team in our purpose built ‘exotic pet’ hospital ward, and repeat blood tests to ensure his kidneys remained functional after surgery, Bodley went home to continue his recovery with lots of TLC from his owner!
Bladder and kidney stones in rabbits are often composed of calcium carbonate or oxalate. The exact reason why these stones form is unknown, however, factors believed to be involved include not drinking enough, genetic predisposition, excess dietary calcium, underlying kidney or bladder disease, obesity, arthritis and insufficient exercise. A variety of signs can be associated with kidney and bladder stones ranging from difficulty or straining to urinate, Urine sludge (white chalky calcium deposits seen in urine), urine incontinence and therefore urine scald, blood in the urine, urinating small amounts in unusual areas, weight loss, inappetence and abdominal pain. These signs can also be associated with other diseases so it is important to have your bunny regularly checked by a vet to ensure they remain healthy. A variety of treatment options exist for kidney and bladder stones depending on the stage of stone formation when the disease is noticed so it is vital to detect problems early in order to maximise the chance of successful treatment. If you are concerned about your pet please give us a call on 01692 407126 to discuss how we can help or book a free of charge health check with our qualified nurses.

Shakespeare Success at the new Griffon Theatre
The award winning Far East Youth Theatre Group at Paston Sixth Form College celebrated the first production at the new Griffon Theatre with their interpretation of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Comedy of Errors’ using Actor Ian McKellan’s view on Shakespeare, when he said “I think anyone should do whatever they like with Shakespeare. Shakespeare is more than just plays in the head – Shakespeare is a hydra headed brand”. The group interpretation of the Comedy of Errors was inspired by the fantastical world of Dr Seuss, the reality defying images of M C Escher and a large amount of traditional farce. The packed audience laughed from start to finish as the play moved swiftly from one farce to another. It was a wonderful, enjoyable piece, with all the students involved throughout, maintaining the fun and enjoyment for the audience.
There were excellent performances by Wesley Burgess as Aegon, William McKinnell as Duke of Solinus of Ephesus and Dillon Rix
as Antipholus of Ephesus. There was much slapstick humour delivered by Bret Demmen and Benedict Wills as Dromio of Syracuse and Dromio of Ephesus. There were wonderful performances by Adriana – Tilda Bailes, Luciana – Emily Butchers and Luce – Daisy Wilson, and Merchants – Millie Sawyer-Stone, Balthazar – Dora LeBorgne, and Angelo – Alice Digby.
The pace of the show, and set movement was supported by the Police Officers – Abi Tacon, Eve Dawson and Steven Logsdon. There was also great support from the Courtesan Laura Seddigh, Dr Pinch – Steven Logsdon and the Abbess – Mary PERSONAL & Bennett.
North Walsham Times 489 February 27th 2016
The performances also starred Cecilia, a Dachshund, a first for Paston with a dog as one of the stars of the show. It certainly got all the attention backstage and could launch a successful career on stage and screen.

NORTH WALSHAM GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME WEBSITE LAUNCH
The leader of North Norfolk District Council, Councillor Tom Fitzpatrick, will officially launch the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme website at 1.30pm on Thursday March 10th at No 1 Market Place, North Walsham, home of Arts North Norfolk. It is hoped that Mayor Brenda West will also be able to attend the launch.
In September 2015 North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme was awarded a grant from the Big Society Fund administered by North Norfolk District Council. This grant has enabled the Scheme to set up a website to act as another channel for contact from volunteers, requests for assistance and donations, as well as promoting the Scheme to a much wider public.
A NWGNS spokesman said: “We are delighted that Councillor Fitzpatrick will launch the website as it would not have been possible to establish this important means of communication and purchase the laptop used to administer the Scheme without the Big Society Fund grant.”
Members of the North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme will be on hand throughout the day at No 1 Market Place to answer questions and demonstrate the new website.
For further details of North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme, please visit: www.nwgoodneighbour.org.uk

CAB advisers to offer drop-in service at local foodbank centres
The Cromer and District Foodbank is delighted to announce that Citizens Advice advisers will soon be operating at three of its distribution centres in North Norfolk.
Since last December, Citizens Advice Mid Norfolk have provided a drop-in service at the foodbank’s distribution centre at Sheringham and from the end of February, Norfolk Citizens Advice Volunteers will provide a drop-in service in the foodbank’s distribution centres in Cromer and Stalham, too.
Since it was founded in 2012 the foodbank has built up a strong support network for local people in financial crisis, working with over 70 partner agencies to offer food and advice across 200 square miles of North Norfolk.
“Citizens Advice plays a crucial role for foodbank clients, helping to identify and resolve the causes behind each crisis,” says Ella King, the foodbank’s project manager. “Both Citizens Advice Mid Norfolk and Norfolk Citizens Advice have been working closely with us to help provide easier access for clients within a caring supportive environment. The service is available to all comers. You don’t have to have a foodbank voucher to attend – but if you need one, the CAB adviser can issue it.”

Slow Food Aylsham donates 100 recipe books to foodbank
Recipe booklets were on the menu when Slow Food Aylsham presented Cromer and District foodbank with 100 copies of a publication produced by the Aylsham-based organization.
The booklets were specifically designed with the foodbank’s food parcels in mind and include recipes which have been produced and tested by members of Slow Food Aylsham, together with local chef Derrol Waller. Wipe clean and ‘open flat’, the booklets are very kitchen-friendly. A spokesperson for the foodbank said, “We are sure they will be helpful, and a source of inspiration for our clients.”
Cromer and District foodbank exists to help individuals and families in crisis situations. Its clients access services through front-line support groups such as Citizens’ Advice Bureaux, School Parent Advisors, Health Visitors, Housing Associations and Money Management Advisors, all of whom hold foodbank vouchers. The vouchers can be presented at one of the distribution centres in Aylsham, Cromer, Holt, North Walsham, Sheringham or Stalham in exchange for a food parcel sufficient for at least three days.
The foodbank feeds over 2,000 people in a year, a number which continues to rise. Reasons for needing foodbank services are many and varied but can include:
• a change in circumstances, resulting in stoppage of all benefits until new amounts are assessed • bereavement • redundancy • unexpected repair bills.
Details of foodbank locations and opening times, as well as advice on where to obtain vouchers is available Cromer & District foodbank Project Manager Ella King (right), from Project Manager received the recipe booklets from Slow Food Aylsham Chairman Ella King on 07826 376 Mo Anderson-Dungar 343 or email tober. STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Extra-ordinary Joe’s Great Hits Stun Robin
In the Premier Division, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Joe Kirkup hosted Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Hubert Cheng. Reigning North Norfolk champion Thaxter went into the match unbeaten this season but lost his one hundred percent record to an inspiring performance from Kirkup who produced some outstanding hitting to win 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9. Kirkup also picked up another win as his good forehand looping saw him beat Bennell in straight with the Gresham’s player losing out to a consistent Price in five. Bennell picked up a single in four against Elliott and the remaining games were won by the visitors with no more sets dropped including a solid maximum for Cheng. Thaxter and Bennell won the doubles in three against Price and Kirkup to conclude Gresham A’s 7-3 win. In the First Division Poacher’s Chris Fuller, Andy Marsh and Steve Dams hosted NWSCC’s Paul Brown, Stuart Hook and Joel Lodge winning 10-0 with Brown taking a set from Dams and the doubles going to four.
Three North Walsham teams were drawn at home in the first round of the Handicap Singles Cup which made for a particularly busy night at the Sports Centre. NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer (16), Phil Stone (13) and Phil Mole (13) hosted NWSCC’s Richard Porritt (15), Stuart Hook
(15) and Joel Lodge (18). Porritt served well as he took a maximum, however his last win came in a dead rubber as NWSCD’s 5-2 win became 5-3. Stone was exceedingly lucky against Hook (+2) as his nets and edges account moved into double figures and he later sealed the win against Lodge (+5). Mole also picked up a brace and Sawyer won a tight game against Lodge (+2) 35-31. On the far table, NWSCB’s Joe Kirkup (10), Paul Price (8) and Dennis Elliott (13) beat Mundesley A’s Paul Light (17), Peter Betts (13) and Jonathan Care (15) 5-2 with the two points for the visitors courtesy of a brace from Betts. On the middle table, NWSCE’s Ben Lester (18), Carrie Last (23) and Tom Wardle (16) hosted Shark’s Matt Hudson (13), Chris Marshall (15) and Steve Patterson (5). Last took a brace but lost out to Marshall as Sharks won 7-2. There was better news for NWSCE as they progressed to the second round of the Handicap Doubles Cup (to face Mundesley A) after Mundesley C conceded.
LCC Lobster’s Stan Munn (18), Tim Dawson (17) and Robbie Birtwell (21) hosted NWSCF’s Edna Stone (23), Brenda Baldock (26) and Andrew Weston (21). Stone had a great night for the visitors as she won the opener against Munn 35-15, won a tight game against Dawson 35-31 and completed her
The Vikings, Norfolk's leading team, are enjoying a fine season in London North Division 1, the sixth tier of English rugby. Ahead of the game at Chingford on 20 February they were fifth, one point behind Thurrock and twelve behind leaders Tring. After three consecutive defeats they have bounced back with wins against Barking, Harrow and Chelmsford, so are confident of finishing the season strongly. The Raiders, the club's second team, are also doing well pushing for promotion from their league.
The Youth and Minis section, where more than half the first team squad began their rugby careers, is thriving with around 250 members and games or training every Sunday morning. There are age group teams from under 6 to under 17; each has at least one qualified coach. In November there was a very successful mini festival with over 1000
maximum against Birtwell 35-22 while Baldock also picked up a single with a hard fought win against Birtwell. Weston came close in two of his singles losing out to both Munn and Birtwell 35-33. The match went to the wire and in the deciding ninth encounter Munn beat Baldock (+8) 35-28 to see Lobsters progress with a 5-4 win.
