Golden Celebration for North Walsham Market Cross Women’s Institute
There are not many societies that last half a century, but our WI has!
At our March meeting, we celebrated our Golden Anniversary 50 years - in style. Representatives from Norfolk Federation, our WI Advisor, and guests from other local WIs attended, and we were all entertained by the talented Rachel Duffield, who illustrated the 'Seven ages of women' in poetry, song and witty tales. Fifty beautifully decorated cup cakes with tea or coffee were then consumed with enthusiasm, as we all looked forward to the next 50 years, hoping that they will be just as enjoyable and eventful as 1966-2016.
Our next meeting will be on 13 April when Mr Robert Ferguson will give us a talk on ‘Animals of the Rift Valley’. The WI meets at St Benet Hall behind St. Nicholas Church at 7.15pm. We are a friendly group, and visitors and prospective new members are always given a warm welcome. Phone 01692 536186 or 408994 for more details.

Get ahead of the game with free start-up business workshops
Anyone considering starting their own business is being urged to take the opportunity to attend one of a new series of free start-up workshops running in North Norfolk.
The half-day workshops will be delivered by local Enterprise Agency Nwes, supported by North Norfolk District Council and funded by the European Regional Development Fund to guide aspiring entrepreneurs through the main areas to consider when setting up a business, giving a firm foundation on which to trade successfully. The workshops require no previous business experience and will cover finance, market research, legal requirements and business planning so that those attending will have a real understanding of the critical areas to focus on to make their business a success.
Cllr Nigel Dixon, cabinet member for business and economic development said “These workshops are an excellent opportunity for anyone thinking of setting up a new business. It’s a chance to learn and grow in confidence, while also seeing business ideas from different angles.”
The programme includes sessions in North Walsham and Cromer with the first event in Fakenham on 24th March. Those attending will also be able to receive free business advice after the scheduled programme of events. The new programme follows similar successful start-up programmes run by Nwes where attendees described the workshops as being the catalyst for “changing the way I look at my business” and an

“excellent investment of time” that “stopped me making some basic mistakes”.
Andrew Wilson Nwes Head of Enterprise Services said “These workshops focus on the basics of starting a business properly helping the new business owner to concentrate on putting the right foundations in place to give them the best chance of business success. The sessions are delivered by our team who support hundreds of people to start trading each year and have a huge amount of experience and insight to tap into. It’s a great opportunity for North Norfolk start-ups to get ahead of the game.” To find out more about the Business Workshop programme please contact Nwes on 0845 6099991 info@nwes.org.uk

Win a Garden Makeover Woodgate Nursery, Alysham is appealing for garden lovers to enter their new competition to win a garden makeover, either for themselves or someone they think would greatly benefit, for example a vulnerable or elderly person, or just someone who really deserves to win such a great prize – maybe they help tirelessly within your community and deserve such a great gift as recognition for their hard work?
So shake off the winter chills and discover the fresh new plants of springtime and enter our new competition to win a garden makeover, which will help you or a loved one rediscover the delights of gardening. The prize includes a two hour consultation with award winning designer Dominique Rudd, £200 worth of plants from Woodgate Nursery and Afternoon Tea for 4 at Purdy’s Tea Room. Simply email (enquiries@woodgatenursery.co.uk) or post us pictures of an area of garden that needs a makeover , including a detailed reason of why you would like our help.
Stuart Morton from Purdy’s Tea Room commented ‘A chance conversation with Dominique Rudd after she won gold at the Sandringham Flower show last year has meant we have been able to put together this great prize. Our initial conversation centered on our joint wish to help brighten up someone’s garden and day. I would like to see entries from people who have nominated someone else’s garden, just because they know it will bring great pleasure to the winner’. For further information and entry details for the garden makeover competition visit www.woodgatenursery.co.uk or pop into Woodgate Nursery or Purdy’s Tea Room and pick
up an entry form.
Woodgate Nursery, Aylsham is delighted to announce its popular annual Garden Show is back this June, in aid of the Liz Jones Memorial Trust (which supports young children around the Aylsham area) and other local charities
The free to attend garden show will take place on 18 and 19 June between 10am and 4.30pm and will aim to build on the success of last year’s event which welcomed more than 3,000 people and raised £1742.55 for The Liz Jones Memorial Trust.
Packed full of inspiration for the garden, the annual show is a great day out for everyone including budding young gardeners who can have their face painted, compete in a fun Treasure Hunt. Inspired by the Royal Horticulture Society’s (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, four local garden designers will also be battling for visitors votes to be crowned the winner of the best garden design. This year we are delighted to have Dominque Rudd participating in the event, the winner of the Sandringham Flower show garden design competition in 2015.
Peter Purdy, founder of Woodgate Nursery, comments ‘The Garden Show is a fantastic opportunity for gardening enthusiasts across Norfolk to come together, share tips with local people and businesses, and raise funds for a worthwhile, local charity.’ Purdy’s Tea Room will be serving a delicious range of homemade cakes, light lunches, ice creams, tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout the weekend.

North Walsham Parish Church Vestments Exhibition 2016 Following on from the highly successful vestments exhibition last held in 2011, North Walsham Parish Church will present a further collection of church vestments this year. This will run over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, with opening hours from 10am till 5pm on Saturday 28 and Monday 30 May, and 12 midday till 5pm on Sunday 29 May. The event will kick off with a sparkling wine reception on the Friday evening, and will be opened by the Lord Bishop of Norwich, Graham James. Dr Nicholas Groves, the curator of the exhibition explains “Church vestments are worn by clergy, choristers, and servers, and have a special meaning and significance. This time, vestments are being loaned from all over Norfolk, many from Norwich Cathedral, Holt, and Walsingham. Many though are
coming from further afield Lampeter, Liverpool, and Romsey amongst others. Items from personal collections are also being lent.
There should be something for everyone. Many of the vestments are beautiful in themselves. They show fabrics and techniques of embroidery which will be of interest for all who are interested in fine things. There will also be talks to explain the significance of the vestments for church services, and about how the vestments are made.
CHOIRfest 2016: An evening of song from the choirs of North Norfolk To celebrate the wealth of vocal music making in North Norfolk, Coast Arts are hosting an exciting evening of choir music in the famous Cromer Pavilion Pier Theatre on 9 April at 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by Nick Conrad from BBC Radio Norfolk. Final preparations are under way for the 2016 Coast Arts CHOIRfest, which promises to be an amazing evening with over 120 singers performing in the famous Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre. “Six choirs from around the area are coming together for the evening,â€? said Tony Knight, musical director of Vocality, who is bringing the choirs together. “There are some great choirs around the area all working hard on their own music and each with an individual style; this is a chance for the choirs to work, learn and perform together. The evening will feature a range of classical and contemporary music, with each choir singing pieces on their own and all having fun singing pieces together.â€? Barry Meadows from Coast Arts added “We don't think this has ever been done before – beautiful songs sung to the natural background music of the sea thundering beneath the theatre – with over 120 singers it really willbe a wonderful night of musicâ€?. Nick Conrad from BBC Radio Norfolk, who will be hosting the evening, is really looking forward to the event. "I love Cromer Pier and getting the chance to compere at such an amazing evening in the Pavilion Theatre is a real privilege" Nick said, "all these choirs are working so hard to bring a real mix of vocal music together, it promises to be a super musical evening." The six choirs at CHIORfest 2106 are Cliftonville Singers, Cromer Gospel Choir, Rockit Choir, New Sheringham Singers, Sing for Joy and Vocality. Tickets are priced at ÂŁ6 and available from www.cromerpier.co.uk or Box Office 01263 512495.
Theatre Suppers Step into the Spotlight
A community theatre is serving up extra helpings of pre-show suppers to help feed its coffers as well as its customers. Showgoers at Sheringham Little Theatre are savouring meals as well as stage and screen performances at the seaside venue. Pre-show suppers have been added to the all-year-round programme at the charity-run community arts centre. They are proving a big hit with audiences - and are helping raise valuable income to support the theatre’s arts activities. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the suppers were being extended to most evening performances this year after they were a huge success during last summer’s repertory drama season. “The suppers were a big hit, and by the end of the season our 40 covers were sold out. “They add to the visitor experience, are good value for money and make it less stressful as people can get a meal before the show if they come straight from work,â€? she added. Newcomer chef Norman Pottle will be creating the suppers, which start at 6pm or 6.30pm depending on the time of the evening event. He said menus would change according to the season from hearty pies and crumbles in winter to quiches and salads in summer. Mr Pottle, 64, from Bodham, has more than 40 years’ experience in catering including seven in the Royal Navy cooking on board ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle, as well as being a chef on offshore rigs and a Cromer residential home. The keen theatregoer said he was looking forward to his new challenge. The two-course suppers cost ÂŁ15.50, with after-dinner coffee and mints. Or there is a choice of a single course from the menu, which will include minute steak, seared fillet of salmon and a vegetable lasagne. Dessert choices include banoffee pie, Eton mess and apple pie. Players Success Once Again!
The North Walsham Players pantomime this year was ‘Dick Turpin’ and was staged at North Walsham Community Centre over two days.
It featured a cast of 21, for some of whom this was their first time in a live show. This was the Players 16th pantomime since they formed back in 1998. Once again, the show was rehearsed over just eight weeks, twice a week. Director and performer Colin Jeary said he was very happy with the way the cast gelled together in the musical panto, and also the great support from the people of North Walsham who came and supported the show.
He added some people would not believe that they only rehearse twice a week for eight weeks prior to the show, which equates to basically 16 rehearsals, which are only normally around 1 ½ - 2 hours Shop at 7 Church Street, Cromer long. Amazing Grace
Many of us will be familiar with the hymn Amazing Grace and have heard of John Newton the man who wrote it, but how many of us know about his eventful life? Thanks to the most informative talk given by the Rev Paul Cubitt at our last meeting the members of North Walsham Mothers’ Union now know much more about his fascinating life story.
Born in 1678 John was raised by his loving and Godly mother while his father, a ships captain, was at sea for much of the time. Sadly John’s mother died
12
when he was just 6 years old, his father remarried and John was sent off to boarding school where it seems he was less than an exemplary student! At age 11 his father pulled him out of school and sent him to work on the boats. When he was seventeen his father secured him a good post on a plantation in Jamaica, however, on what should have been a brief visit to friends John met Polly, missed his ship, lost the job and was sent to sea for a year by his irate father. Things went from bad to worse - an unhappy John jumped ship, was severely punished and ended up in West Africa as a white slave. He was eventually rescued, in 1748, by his father and it was during
a storm on the way back home to England that John came to faith. At the age of 25 he married Polly and became both a devout Christian and a slave trader which seems incongruous to us but was widely accepted at that time. As time passed his outlook changed and he became an advocate for the abolition of slavery.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 12 April when our speaker will be Mr Jim Page from Cromer Lifeboat. We meet at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Room, North Walsham. For further details contact Ann on 01692 402705

‘Sandscaping’ option to protect North Walsham and District Historical Society coast from extreme weather Work to look at improving the coastal defences to Bacton Gas Terminal and neighbouring villages is continuing.
One option which is being considered is to ‘sandscape’ the beach with high volumes of additional sand, in order to help protect the coast from extreme weather.
It is thought this approach, trialled by the Dutch successfully, would be the most effective and it could be achieved either by putting sand on the beach periodically, or in one go.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “We are working with the Terminal operators to see what we can do together. This option has the potential to help buy time for our villages, potentially extending the life of the existing defences by 20 years giving people time to plan and adapt to the changing coastline.” Norman Lamb MP said “Work on this scheme is of the utmost importance. It is clearly critical that Bacton Gas Terminal, a strategically important site, is protected against further coastal erosion. However, it is also essential that when works are carried out to protect the gas terminal, every opportunity is explored to seek to improve the coastal management situation for the adjacent villages of Bacton and Walcott.” North Norfolk District Council, the operators of Bacton Gas Terminal and the Environment Agency are investigating this option and how it could be funded. Discussion is also underway with The Crown Estate which manages offshore sand resources.
Government funding is not available for the defence of the Bacton Gas Terminal so the operators are looking at how they can fund the protection of the nationally important asset themselves.
A scheme to enhance the protection of the villages is potentially eligible for government funding; however, there remains an estimated shortfall in funds which could be significantly reduced if sand could be taken from a site offshore from Bacton. Further work is now underway to investigate any environmental impact of such a new licensed extraction area, before a view can be taken about whether that option could be considered further. It is understood that if funds cannot be found for the wider public scheme then Bacton Gas Terminal operators would have to press ahead with the scheme for the Terminal only.

The Reverend Paul Cubitt, Vicar of St Nicholas, North Waltham gave a lively talk on the history of bell ringing at our March meeting.
Paul commenced bell ringing himself aged only ten – following both of his parents who were bell ringers in Norwich. Now, as the Vicar of St Nicholas church, he has become the Diocese consultant on bell ringing. He explained that bells were used to give information such as warnings, weddings, festivities, to mark the time etc. At a person’s funeral, the number of bells and strikes would be a code to let listeners know who it was for and their age. On the appointment of a new Vicar, he or she strikes the bell a number of times according to how long they are intending to stay in the parish. With invasion a peal of bells is rung, but in a reverse order. A few short videos then showed the horrors of ringing incorrectly. This led to Paul explaining that a peal of bells consist of between 5 to 8 bells in number, each of varying sizes from about 3 tons upwards. In the 1700s and to this day there is great competition to ring the greatest number of changes at a single ringing session; during a record session bell ringers stay at their ringing station throughout and can suffer great privations and discomfort. A peal consists of the greatest permutations of sequential changes achieved without making a mistake in a single bell ringing session and they number thousands. The bell ringers are led by a Captain of Bells who directs the changes. While it is not proven, it significant that the church tower of St Nicholas church fell down in 1724 which also brought all 6 bells down with it. This is believed to have happened after a prolonged attempt on the record. Following this disaster the peal of bells were split up, some were sold and others melted down to make smaller and lighter ones. Paul is very keen to obtain the frame that was used for the peal of bells on the Thames barge during the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations in 2012 …it is about the right size to restore a peal of bells to St Nicholas Church.
The vicar ended his talk by persuading five volunteers to each ring a hand bell under his directorship. Each ringer was only to change places with one ringer at each move, and in so doing, they produced a complete peal change of their bells for our enjoyment! Mike Sothcott

A World of Inspiration!
World Book Day was celebrated at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham in grand style.
Pupils and staff were invited to dress up as their favourite book characters for the day and they all took part in an array of inspiring activities.
Some of the children used their outstanding creativity and produced an assortment of skilfully crafted light boxes, each depicting a scene from their favourite book. The children in Early Phase used the story of the Gingerbread Man and created salt dough Gingerbread men to journey across the ‘river’ in boats they had made from recycled material. They then became the ‘fox’ in the story and gobbled up delicious Gingerbread biscuits; which they had made; at the end of their activities. Other children produced Power Point book reviews of their favourite books, and some reinvented original stories and gave them a different ending or version of the story. The school then came together at the end of the day for a special sharing assembly, in which each phase talked about the activities that they took part in and which books inspired them. There were also prizes given for best dressed character from each phase. The winners were Connor Englestone from Early Phase, who had dressed as the Artful Dodger, Zak Register from Middle Phase, who looked as though he had just materialised from the pages of Alice in
World Book Day at Worstead Pre School World Book Day was enjoyed by all the pre-schoolers attending Worstead Pre-school. Our recording area covers eight 10k squares and includes many premium birding locations, as well as thousands of acres of under-watched or undiscovered habitats.
Our aim is to bring together people with a love and concern for birds in our area, to share knowledge and information, encourage participation in exploring our rich wildlife heritage and promote awareness of our threatened natural environment. We strive to be a sociable, inclusive and informative club which plays a vital role in the local birding community. We run a comprehensive programme of indoor and outdoor events throughout the year and aim to be a valuable resource to birders of all levels of experience and interest. Dunnock feeding Thursday 31 March 19.30 – 21.30 at courtesy Richard Farrow Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Indoor meeting - illustrated talk by Moss Taylor "The History of Birding in North Norfolk" based on his highly successful appearance at Sheringham Little Theatre, earlier this year. This replaces the previously advertised talk by David Tipling.
Since before the days of the Victorian bird collectors, north Norfolk has been renowned as an area that attracts wildfowl, waders & rare birds. In this illustrated talk, Moss Taylor traces the development of birdwatching from the early local wildfowlers and ‘Gentlemen Gunners’, to the establishment of the bird reserves at Cley and Blakeney Point. Norfolk has a rich source of written material on the change from the era of collecting to modern day conservation, and extracts from this, along with some of the fascinating characters that achieved these Hooper Swans changes form the basis of A History of courtesy Trevor Williams Birding in North Norfolk. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. A torch might be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. Free entry and refreshments available in the interval.

Plan to introduce on-street parking meters scrapped A controversial plan to introduce on-street parking meters to Cromer and Sheringham should be stopped in its tracks. Plans to bring in on-street parking have been suggested by Norfolk Parking Partnership, which is operated by Norfolk County Council. A statement has been sent to officers of the Norfolk Parking Partnership Joint Committee setting out the district council’s concerns. Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for assets said: “As Cabinet member I invited ward members in to talk through the county’s proposals; this is an issue of great concern to people in our district. “At that meeting councillors were keen for all options to be explored to see if the costs of
parking enforcement could be reduced or if parking could be enforced more locally.“Our belief is that more time needs to be spent looking into the issue in far more detail and that if this approach had been adopted it would have given a full understanding of the options and opportunities.” At that meeting councillors agreed to ask whether the Norfolk Parking Partnership Joint Committee had fully explored all the options for reducing the costs of parking enforcement before looking to raise additional funds from putting in parking meters. The councillors present at the meeting were Cllr John Rest (Cabinet Member for Assets), Cllr Judy Oliver (Cabinet Member for Legal Services and Ward Member for Sheringham South) Cllr Nigel Pearce (Ward Member Suffield Park, Cromer) Cllr Richard Shepherd (Ward Member Sheringham South) and
On the 18th of February the Norfolk Parking Partnership joint Committee brought forward a proposal to introduce Pay and Display meters in Sheringham, Cromer and Hunstanton, the reasoning behind this is to support the sustainability of On Street Civil Parking Enforcement in Norfolk. At the moment these pay and display enforcement procedures only happen in Norwich, Kings Lynn and Gt Yarmouth. Our local enforcement of parking on streets at the moment is done through This partnership which includes input from County Council and District Councils which includes North Norfolk District Council, (NNDC) And separately from this committee our district car parks in North Norfolk are run by NNDC. To put it plainly the present on street
enforcement process in Cromer and Sheringham is not paying for itself and the Partnership are having to seek other ways of providing the service which is essential in our towns. Being made aware only a few days before the meeting of the Norfolk Parking Partnership (NPP), I arranged on the 15th of February for The 2 Town Councils and both Chambers to meet with officers of the County Council to understand what was happening, parking meters are something none of us wants but the enforcement of our towns will need to be addressed ASAP. Although the issue at the NPP committee was not carried forward at that time, being part of a Budget proposal it will be looked into again to take forward the years budget. Not waiting for this to happen I convened another meeting with the local

Thorpe Market – A Conservation Churchyard Explained
The last two years have seen concerted action to bring the churchyard back into the conservation fold. For those unaware of its importance, Norfolk Wildlife Trust consider it one of the most diverse, in terms of number of variety of plants, of all the churchyards they have surveyed in the Diocese. It also offers refuge to five out of six of the old meadow wildflowers - saxifrage, pignut, cowslip, ox-eye daisy and lady’s bedstraw. In June 2015 we hosted an over-subscribed Wildflower Identification day. Plans are in hand for a Butterfly Identification day in 2016. Historically, the area would have been meadowland for hundreds of years, the only maintenance being a twice yearly scything. Yes, we have the records to show that someone was paid 10 shillings a time in the 1920s to do just that! The major change was the arrival of rotary power mowers in the 20th century. Thorpe Market only introduced intensive mowing in the 1980s, so most of the original vegetation has survived. We have a Francis Frith photograph in the church showing the front of the churchyard in the 1920s. The current conservation areas are cut in the late summer and the debris raked off. We have been fortunate in having the services of the Unpaid Work Unit to undertake this task for the last two years, work that needs young muscle! We strive to enhance the appearance of the conservation areas by strategic mowing around the margins - most-used paths kept very short, a buffer zone around the conservation areas maintained with the mower on a high cut, the conservation areas left to develop and flower and given a late summer cut. A sort of golf course mind-set- putting green, fairway and “rough”! We are always seeking volunteers for around one hour a month to help Ryan and Sandy, who undertake the “putting green and fairway” cuts throughout the summer. On Saturday 26 March at 10am there will be a working party to tidy after the winter storms, especially in the Hazel Grove. A couple of hours followed by soup in the kitchen will work wonders. Conservation-minded gardeners sought for this sociable activity. Enquiries to 01263 833252 or info@thorpemarket.org.uk

Cllr John Lee (Ward Member Suffield Park, Cromer) Cllr Judy Oliver, Cabinet Member for Legal Services and Ward Member for Sheringham South added: “Any changes to the present car parking enforcement scheme must be carefully considered, evidence based and rational. A scheme that does not meet those criteria would be vulnerable to challenge by way of judicial review. We are keen to establish a way forward that is reasonable, fair and effective and we will consider all options to achieve that result. If the present proposal is pushed through we will look to challenge it in court.” Cllr Nigel Pearce, Ward Member for Suffield Park, Cromer, added: “It feels like the on-street parking proposals would be robbing the north Norfolk coast – taking money out of the area and they would not bring any benefit to our two seaside towns.”
bodies concerned on the 3rd of March, the outcome to this further meeting with Both town councils and Chamber's, NCC officers were asked to go back and ask NNDC to consider Again to look at the possibility of funding Cromer and Sheringham On Street enforcement, District council again refused, following this fortunately Norfolk Parking Partnership got the message and withdrew the proposal to put in Parking Meters and to look for another way. It is really interesting to be aware that the district Council are part of the Norfolk Partnership and have a Cabinet member at the table, it is just a pity North-Norfolk District Council but did not block this proposal before. I am grateful to Cromer Town Council and Chamber for joining forces with Sheringham to block this unwelcome proposal, working together is the only way, the 2 towns are very alike with similar problems, long may that joint working continue. Brian Hannah, County Member for Sheringham.

Success at last! Boots has now been reunited with his family and they were delighted to see him after nearly two months. Because we knew that he was a much-loved member of the family that had recently moved to their new home, and were very anxious to be reunited with him, we had been putting food out to establish a routine and encourage him to visit us to gain his trust. Initially, he only visited at night, which is not the best time to try and catch him. However, once he realized that food would be available when he made his presence known, it didn’t take very long, after his family were informed that he was feeding, that they were able to finally reunite them. It does sometimes take a little time to achieve the required result. When putting him into the cat carrier it was obvious that he had not lost weight or condition while missing from home so other people must have been feeding him too. Because this was happening it took longer than usual to reunite Boots with his family. Please remember feeding a strange cat that has appeared in your garden may be encouraging it to leave home and cause a great deal of distress. The number of cats in care has been limited recently as some essential maintenance has been needed on the pens at Dilham. The perspex parts of the pen roofs have now been replaced by solid roofs, making them cosier for the winter months and cooler should we have some hot days this summer. The felt on the housing units and also on the sheds has also been replaced which will help keep them nice and dry for the next few years.
Westover Vets
Although several cats have been rehomed recently, including Boco, the cat featured last time, there are lots of new cats arriving to fill the empty spaces and, with the kitten season just around the corner (although we do hope the Neutering Campaign will have helped to prevent so many unwanted kittens needing our help), there is no doubt that our waiting list will soon be back to normal.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
This month I would like to spare a thought those who have lost beloved pets or have pets with terminal illness. Pets play a very special part in our lives providing unconditional love, joy, loyalty, acceptance, friendship, comfort and companionship sometimes over many years. Many people love their pet in the same way that they do any other family member and it is not surprising that the loss of a pet should invoke a range of potentially intense emotions. This can be very difficult to manage, and whilst some people are able to move on quickly, it is not the case for everyone. One of the most common questions we are asked as vets is “does it get any easier

when you have to put pets to sleep?” For me, I would say no, largely because the more time you spend getting to know animals and their owners the more you understand individuals and their bonds. We have to remind ourselves that in many ways we are very fortunate to be able to make the decision and to prevent suffering, but it will always be an incredibly difficult time for all concerned. My colleague, Chris Tomlinson, speaks of our role as vets to be with our patients on their journey from puppies or kittens at their first visit all the way through their lives to the final moment and to ensure that our patients are dealt with the dignity and respect they deserve, be it at home or at the surgery.
For some the loss, however we try and manage it, can be difficult to deal with, but there is now help and support available both online and in person www.theralphsite.com offers caring non-judgemental pet bereavement support online with information, resources, memorials and community. There is also a list of qualified bereavement counsellors available, which includes Alison Naulls, who provides support locally and can be found on the Ralph site. Caring for pets and enjoying the relationships formed is one of life’s true joys and will hopefully always outweigh the loss when they are gone, but if you are finding it hard there are now people to help. In the meantime enjoy every minute with them! Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Veterinary Centre

Recently Asked Question and Answers on Family Law By Neale Grearson, Head of Family Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors
My estranged husband has transferred all of his assets to his brother. Will this affect our Divorce? There is an obligation on husbands and wives when they separate or divorce to be open and honest with each other and to act appropriately. If he has transferred assets in an attempt to deplete your financial entitlement the Court has the power to overturn such a transaction and to take that into account as part of a Divorce settlement.
Are maintenance Orders linked to inflation? How could they be increased? Maintenance Orders for an ex-husband or ex-wife are not automatically linked to inflation. The Order dealing with the maintenance can include a provision linked to the Retail Price Index but that is unusual. Maintenance can be increased by agreement or an Order can be varied if there is a change in circumstances so an Application can be made to a Judge. This is in relation to maintenance for an ex-wife or ex-husband but maintenance for children can only be dealt with by the Child Maintenance Service if agreement is not reached as the Courts have only limited powers over and above what the Child Maintenance Service can assess the level of maintenance at.
My wife has been violent to me in the past. I have been told to get a Civil Injunction but what is it and what does it do? An application can be made for an injunction which is a Court Order to protect a victim of domestic violence. Any violence is a criminal offence and can be reported to the police for criminal action to be taken. This should always be the first step as the police may be able to take the quickest action and may be able to put measures in place for your protection such as ensuring your address is noted on their system for a quick response, installing panic alarms in your property, and prosecuting any offences via the criminal justice
system, which can include obtaining a Restraining Order against the person concerned. In the alternative, or alongside any action the police may take, a civil injunction, such as a Non-molestation Order, may be required. Much like a Restraining Order, which is obtained through the criminal courts following a prosecution, a Non-molestation Order can provide for measures that protect you such as prohibiting your partner from contacting you or coming near you or your property. Once a Nonmolestation Order is in place, its breach can be enforced as a criminal offence by the police or through the civil courts as a contempt of court. If I have joint custody or sole custody of our daughter would I still have to pay my ex-wife maintenance? The Child Maintenance Service makes assessments in relation to the payment of maintenance to children if parents cannot agree. Whether maintenance would have to be paid does depend on the particular circumstances and the amount of time that a child spends with each parent.
What is a Financial Clean Break Order and what does it do? Can it be challenged in the future like in these Court cases I see? A Financial Clean Break means that a husband and wife will not be able to make any future financial claims against the other after their Divorce. In particular it would normally include the provision of all claims for maintenance, capital and against the Estate of the deceased on the death of one of them. It is rare for a Court Order to be challenged and there would need to be a good reason for this. There have recently been a number of high profile cases where Court Orders have been re-opened because of the lack of honesty and financial disclosure given by a husband. Usually however a settlement that is agreed and contained in a Consent Order which adds provision for a Clean

Break is not capable of being challenged.
My Dad only lent me the deposit for our flat if I make my fiancée sign a pre-nup. What if he won't? A Pre-Nuptial Agreement can set out the terms that are accepted should apply if there were to be a Divorce. Very often pressure is exerted from members of family that give or lend money to a son or daughter if they are concerned about what would happen on a subsequent Divorce. Signing a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is entirely voluntary and cannot be forced on anyone. My estranged husband wants to come back to try again. My cousin told me about post-nups in the USA – what are they? A Post-Nuptial Agreement is similar to a Pre-Nuptial Agreement but is entered into after a marriage. They have generally been accepted in this country as being even more enforceable than a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. They are intended to set out what a husband and wife intend should happen if their marriage breaks down and there is a Divorce. Pre-Nuptial Agreements and PostNuptial Agreements are becoming more common in this country and are now widely accepted by the Court as binding so long as there are safeguards in place to ensure that they are fair. It is now no longer left to the rich and famous to have such agreements.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello. You could also be trained to the standard of the crew and be able to save lives at seas. Volunteers meet every Sunday morning at 9am and Tuesday evenings at 7pm for their weekly training exercises.
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station looked back at 2015 with the awards and dinner dance held at Sutton Staithe Hotel on Saturday 27 February. Just under a hundred people attended the dinner dance. After the meal, the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2015.
Jacqui Robertson in the shop
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have had five call-outs for our lifeboats throughout the year but they have done much more. Seventeen of the crew have passed the RNLI Casualty Care course. The volunteers have also been helping the local community by assisting in rounding up 13 heifers who had made a run for it, 10 crew taking part in the Lighthouse Zipwire fundraising event, some volunteers had also helped with the construction of the new village play area and crew also attended the Remembrance Day Sunday Service.
Jake Munday became an Atlantic Helm, Cubitt Seily Jnr completed his Helm course at RNLI College, Poole. We also had the last exercises with the Sea King Helicopter from Wattisham with other local lifeboats, then our first with the new Coastguard helicopter. The Community Safety Team has been working hard to get the Respect the Water campaign message out with Lifejacket clinics and a big PR launch at Cromer.
The new Souvenir Shop arrived at Cart Gap and opened before Easter 2015. In the first nine months they had sales of £17,387 and this was down to Jacqui Robertson and her team of 17 volunteers. The Station decided that this year’s Achievement Award should go to Jacqui and team for all their hard work. The shop will be reopening on 19 March.
The Service Award for memorable services was not awarded this year as the Lifeboat Management Group did not deem any of last year’s services were sufficiently memorable to receive this award. On the night we raised £800 for the RNLI, with a raffle and auction. The crew and their guests then enjoyed the rest of the night dancing to music played by an excellent band.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind The Club held its AGM on Thursday 3 March.
It was nice to see so many members for what turned out to be a most enjoyable afternoon. AGMs are not the most popular meetings to go to, but this one was something special. After all the nominations had been completed and the Committee voted back in, which is always a nice thing because members know that the Committee are doing a good job, we had the pleasure of meeting 88 year old Connie Adam who chatted to us about her life and what she had achieved.
Most of her achievements happened in her midlife by winning lots of ballroom dancing meddles, but it did not stopped there! She just carried on reaching new heights and more and more meddles but not for dancing - this great lady got herself drawn into fencing and became Commonwealth, European and World Champion. She even carried the Olympic Torch in Norwich during the 2012 Olympics.

Volunteers Needed for New Settling in Service
Community based volunteers are being sought to participate in a new ‘Settling in Service’ for patients being discharged from hospital. This project is very much in its infancy and initially volunteers are being sought by the NNUH to help discharged patients who live alone to ‘settle’ back home with confidence – only short term help is needed, but we feel it is so beneficial, especially to those in outlying village communities.
Newly discharged hospital patients often feel very vulnerable when returning home, and unsure about coping with daily living… so a cup of tea, a listening ear and a hand of friendship can make a huge difference in the first couple of days, enabling them to pick up the threads of their normal routines with confidence once again.
Connie brought the torch with her and members had a turn in holding it - what a great experience. It was a memorable afternoon and it was amazing what Connie had achieved and is still achieving at the great age of 88, and with a brilliant sense of humour.
We welcomed the Den-Barrie Duo to our February meeting. They sang a medley of songs from the 60s & 70s. Our fund raising for February & March produce £69 on the raffle and £25.50 on the second hand clothing stall.
We now have a full programme for 2016, which includes entertainment at the Centre as well as trips out. We are always looking for new members so why not come along to the Community Centre on the 1st Thursday in every month at 1.45pm (01692 402562).
22
North Walsham Times 491 March 26th 2016
Volunteers will initially meet patients as they return home and then follow up with a second visit or telephone call the following day. Hopefully, the patient will then feel settled, however any concerns can be raised with a dedicated coordinator who will be able to refer on to community based assistance.
We are looking to recruit some caring and dedicated volunteers in the North Norfolk area who will be available to help on an ad hoc basis to make the service viable. Please contact Kim-Marie Shreeve, Administration Assistant, Voluntary Services Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, 01603 286060 ext. 2060

St Nicholas House Prep School partners with Norwich City Community Sports Foundation (CSF) St Nicholas House Prep School has recently undergone a variety of positive changes, both within the infrastructure of the school and also with our academic provision. We are delighted to announce an expansion of our sports offering. St Nicks will be partnering with Norwich City Community Sports Foundation (CSF) from September 2016.
The CSF Partner School status allows St Nicks sports delivery to be supported by the Foundation during term time. The Foundation works throughout Norfolk providing a comprehensive list of sporting activity including hockey, netball, rugby, football, tennis, cricket, rounder’s and athletics to a number of independent and state schools.
The Foundation provides fully qualified and experienced coaches to deliver games lessons and they will be working with Gary Duniam, our present
Top of the table Amersham & Chiltern were the latest visitors to Scottow in London One North and the result went with the form book as they defeated the Vikings 26 - 0. Although the Buckinghamshire side were worthy winners the scoreline flattered them somewhat. Coach Nick Greenhall was very proud of how his team played commenting, "they gave a brave and wholehearted performance throughout." The result meant that ahead of their visit to Luton on 19 March the Vikings were fifth,

Games Teacher and Martin Castle, our Headmaster, to deliver high quality, expert and comprehensive games provision to St Nicks.
Martin Castle explains ‘St Nicks offers a personalised education because we enjoy small class sizes and expert teachers to support the educational development of our children. Our sports provision is exceptionally important to the development of our pupils and CSF offers a positive and supportive addition to our curriculum. Our children are very excited to have the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation coaches with the benefit of their close contact with Norwich City Football Club.’ Joe Harvey, CSF School Development Officer, confirms ‘Our passion for offering the very best sporting provision within the Norfolk area is paramount and we were pleased to be approached by St Nicks to support their present teaching of the

The second team, the Raiders, have continued their unbeaten run and are on course for promotion to Eastern Counties North 2. In the Youth section the Colts (under 17/18s) won their six team group in the Eastern Counties Cup and were rewarded with

We are looking forward to September and working with Gary Duniam, the Games Teacher, to initiate a comprehensive and individual sporting provision at the school.’ a home semi final against either Colchester or Saffron Walden The under 13s have already won the Norfolk Cup defeating Wymondham 36 -10 in the final whilst the under 16s are through to the Norfolk Plate Final. Scottow is a popular destination for touring sides: Derby played the Colts in early March, whilst in April Deepings and Epping Upper Clapton will be visiting for under 13s fixtures. The Minis themselves will be away touring for the second weekend in April. The Vikings next game at Scottow is against Ruislip on 2nd April, kick off 3.00pm.Entry is £5, there is ample free parking. North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCB make second KO cup final
The first semi-final of the Knockout Doubles Cup took place at North Walsham Sports Centre as NWSCD’s Richard Westgate and the Phil’s Mole and Stone battled NWSCB’s Joe Kirkup, Paul Price and Dennis Elliott. NWSCB made a shocking start as Westgate and Stone won the first eight points of the night, but Kirkup and Elliott battled back to win in five. Price and Elliott then moved NWSCB 2-0 ahead with an 11-6, 12-10, 12-14, 5-11, 11-8 defeat of Westgate and Mole. The next two battles were won by NWSCB in straight sets with a theme developing across the evening of NWSCD making great recoveries in sets without being able to clinch them – the most prolific example of that in the middle set of Kirkup and Price’s win as the two Phil’s came back from 3-10 only to be edged out 13-11. Westgate and Stone pulled one back for NWSCD with a win in four against Kirkup and Price, but Price and Elliott ensured NWSCB would be in both KO Cup finals as their 8-11, 11-8, 16-14, 11-6 win against the two Phil’s sealed NWSCB’s 5-1 win. NWSCD had played another derby in the Premier Division earlier in the week with Sawyer taking the place of Westgate
as they hosted NWSCA’s Howard Lupton, Andy Beane and Elliott again who was playing up. The first three battles all went the distance with Lupton surviving some vintage form against Sawyer, Stone missing a match-point in the fourth before winning the decider against Beane 11-3 and Elliott winning the last two sets against Mole. Later in the evening there was a run of three matches that all went to four as Beane beat Mole, Elliott dominated the first two against Stone before the next two were a lot more entertaining and Lupton won the last seven points in a row from 4-7 down in the fourth to Mole after edging the third 14-12. The remaining battles in NWSCA’s 9-1 win were all won in straight – although Sawyer had two set-points in the third against Lupton and the two Phil’s a set-point also in the third before being edged by Lupton and Elliott 12-10. It was a busy time for NWSCD who played three matches in eleven days as they also won away against Mundesley B in the second round of the Handicap Singles cup. There was some unfortunate drama in the second battle with Sawyer suffering a nasty fall and although she was able to complete
NORFOLK SENIORS CRICKET 2016
the last few points, she was forced to pull out of the rest of the match but three wins from both Mole and Stone saw NWSCD to a 6-3 win. NWSCA also progressed to the quarter-finals with a 5-0 win against LCC Lobsters and NWSCB are the third home team to make the last eight following their 9-0 defeat of LCC Dolphins.
Back in the First Division the third NWSC derby of the week took place as ‘E’s’ Tom Wardle and Ben and James Lester battled ‘C’s’ Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Joel Lodge. James Lester took a brace of wins in straight but lost out in four to maximum man Porritt who also dropped a set against Wardle who in turn beat Lodge in four. Hook beat Ben Lester in four and Wardle in five while Lodge recovered from 0-5 in the deciding set to beat Ben Lester 11-7. Wardle and James Lester beat Porritt and Hook in the doubles in four, but NWSCC won the match 6-4. Finally in the Second Division Aylsham C beat NWSCF 7-3.
It is often said that cricket like most sports is a young man's game, that is not the case here in Norfolk.
Norfolk Seniors Cricket consists of teams for the over 50s, over 60s and over 70s, cricketers who have never fallen out of love with the game and eagerly await the start of a new season. Whilst the running in the field may not be quite as quick, the standard remains high with batsmen still getting big scores and the bowlers continuing to take wickets. The competiveness associated with the game does not diminish, the desire to win, and win well remains. 2016 for the Over Seventies is a rather special year. On 15 July at Cromer Cricket Club they will be entertaining a senior side from Australia.
All are welcome to come along and enjoy a splendid day, watch some enjoyable cricket with "the old enemy" and get to chat with players from both sides.
