North Walsham’s First Easter Fayre and Family Show a Success Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
The Easter weekend in North Walsham was about Easter eggs and of course - porridge!
Arts North Norfolk, the arts charity, presented its first Easter Fayre with 20 stalls that showcased the best of local food, drink, arts and crafts. Over 1000 people attended the fayre and the two shows of Goldilocks and the Three Bears (morning and afternoon) were very busy, with the matinee performance selling out. Anna Rumsby, who launched her new line of wooden family trees in frames at the fayre, said, “There has been a lovely atmosphere all day long and there’s also been a good variety of quality stalls and craftsmanship on display. It’s been very busy and the show has brought in lots of families to the fayre.”

St Nicholas House Prep School Year North Walsham’s First Easter Fayre and Family Show a Success 1 & 2 pupils each have their Poetry
Continued from front cover... Joseph Ballard, who runs Arts North Norfolk and also directed and starred in the show as Father Bear said “I’m very pleased with the great turn out we’ve had today. Lots of happy families have seen our fun energetic show – there’s nothing better than a house full of young children really engaging with live performance. I would heartily like to thank all the stall holders, our theatre company and volunteers for all their hard work.”
The show was penned by Stile and Drewe, a well-known writing duo, who also created the new arrangements for the West End production of Mary Poppins. The show also starred Paige Miller, James Turner, Krissi Jae Kitson and 16 year old Connor Payne as Baby Bear. The bear costumes, which received great praise, were made by professional dressmaker, Teresa Butler.
North Walsham Community Choir also performed some new songs at lunchtime, which was busy with families sharing a teddy bears’ picnic in the café.
More stage capers follow soon at the Atrium Theatre, on Saturday 23 April with A Night of Mystery with the Victorian Conjuror and also the final play of Rob John’s Norfolk trilogy, as Feast Theatre present Winter ’53 on Saturday 28 April.
More event listings can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org to book tickets for upcoming shows, call 01692 218060 or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday).

All the pupils in Years 1 & 2 at St Nicholas House Prep School in North Walsham submitted a poem to the Young Writers’ Sense Poetry Competition. This competition was created to complement Key Stage 1 learning objectives and children were asked to use their senses to write their own poetry.
Sense Poetry is a national competition open to all schools and pupils at KS 1. ‘Young Writers’ aims to encourage young people to engage in creative writing. They have worked with schools, parents and young writers since 1991, and run national poetry and creative writing competitions, provide free resources to teachers and creative workshops for pupils. The pupils’ work, which has been selected for publication within this anthology, was based on creativity, imagination and expression. All our pupils in Yesar 1 & 2 were successful in their entries and we, as a school are very proud of their achievement.
Mrs Norton, Year 1/2 teacher said ‘I wanted to share my love of poetry with my class and thought that the competition was a great way of nurturing their interest. I am immensely proud of all my pupils who took part and entered with such enthusiasm’. Here are a couple of examples of the work which were entered into the competition: I can see dark shiny chocolate I smell hot chocolate clouds Crispy crunchy chocolate walls I touch squidgy sticky chocolate I can taste sweet creamy chocolate. Brogan O'Hara, Age 5
I can see daylight fading through the window I can feel my soft pyjamas. I can smell my porridge bubbling. I can hear people speak and the cook speak. I can taste sugar on my porridge. Lily Mae Wright Age 7

Chocolate Profiteroles @ The Dales
For the choux pastry • 200ml/7fl oz cold water • 4 tsp caster sugar • 85g/3oz unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 115g/4oz plain flour • pinch salt • 3 medium eggs, beaten
For the cream filling • 600ml/1 pint double cream • 3 tsp icing sugar • ½ tsp vanilla extract (or essence)
For the chocolate coating • 200g/7oz dark chocolate, broken into pieces
Method 1 Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.
2. For the choux pastry, place the water, sugar and butter into a large saucepan. Heat gently until the butter has melted.
3. Turn up the heat, then quickly pour in the flour and salt all in one go. 4. Remove from the heat and beat the mixture vigorously until a smooth paste is formed. Once the mixture comes away from the side of the pan, transfer to a large bowl and leave to cool for 10-15 minutes.
5. Beat in the eggs, a little at a time, until the mixture is smooth and glossy and has a soft dropping consistency - you may not need it all.
6. Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Using a piping bag and plain 1cm/½in nozzle, pipe the mixture into small balls in lines across the baking sheet.
Tip 1 - Gently rub the top of each choux pastry with a wet finger as this will help it make a crisper top.
7. Place the baking sheet into the oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until
North Walsham Times 493 April 23rd 2016
golden-brown
8. Remove from the oven and turn the oven off. Prick the base of each profiterole with a skewer. Place back onto the baking sheet with the hole in the base facing upwards and return to the oven for five minutes.
Tip 2 - The warm air from the oven helps to dry out the middle of the profiteroles.
9. For the filling, lightly whip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. When the profiteroles are cold, use a piping bag to pipe the cream into the profiteroles.

10. For the chocolate coating, place the broken chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water till melted. Allow to cool for 5 min. When cool dip each profiteroles onto the melted chocolate and place on tray to cool and set, then serve.

A great day was enjoyed, getting up close to the awesome F15 Eagle aircraft as well as visiting maintenance units, rescue services and having a display from the USAF Police Dog Unit. A huge effort was made by the USAF personnel to make this a successful day for cadets, not only from the Norfolk Squadrons, but for other cadets from as far away as Poole.
Corporal Luca Wedge-Clarke climbs aboard a USAF F15

Mary Jane Seacole, née Grant, was born in Jamaica on 14 May 1805. Her Scottish father was an Army Officer who married her Jamaican shopkeeper mother, who was a busy “doctoress”, a healer who used traditional Caribbean and African herbal remedies, and kept a guesthouse that included two rooms in which Mary, at eight years old, helped to run as a sort of surgery dispensing various cures and herbal-based potions. At 12 years of age, Mary was practicing on her own. She had a good education and was largely brought up by both of her grandmothers. When she was 18, she came to London, stayed with her family and set up in business selling spices. After a year, she returned to Jamaica, and travelled back to London a year later. Returning once more to Jamaica, her baggage contained lots of shells to sell. Her role then included treating solders for malaria - in all she made four return journey to London, all at her own expense and her travels included visits to Bahamas, Cuba and Haiti.
She married her husband Edwin Seacole in 1836 and started another hotel business in Jamaica. She was only married for eight years when her husband died, quickly followed by her mother.
In 1883, the Crimean war started and, at that time. there was inadequate nursing of wounded soldiers. A concerned journalist Mr Bill Nutall, wrote to the Minister for War asking for a battalion of nurses to be formed and sent to the Crimea.
In 1855 Mary opened the ‘British Hotel’ in Panama to cater for the needs of the gold miners. She sold the hotel and returned to London but was unable to get an interview with Florence Nightingale. She paid her own fare and travelled to Constantinople, Florence Nightingale turned her down again, and she then set up a hotel costing her £800 to build, one mile from the battlefront, near Balaclava. She tended the wounded and provided rooms and refreshments for people watching the battles from a nearby hill top, also horse racing, and tea parties during the lulls.
The war ended on 1 April 1986 and she entered several churches collecting candlesticks, bells, and pictures of the Madonna, for safe keeping. She always carried a gun and used it. She retired to London bankrupt. She treated the Princess of Wales for thrombosis. Mary died of a stroke on 14 May 1881. Mike Sothcott

Cantamus Concerts
Cantamus Choir, a 40 strong concert choir based in Southrepps, are gearing up for their final two performances under present conductor, David Ballard.
David has held the baton at Cantamus since September 2010, and in that time the choir has performed across Norfolk venues in works as diverse as choral repertory mainstays such as Faure’s Requiem and Vivaldi’s Gloria, through to smaller scale works, sacred and secular, contemporary and classic.
The final two concerts will be at West Runton Parish Church (Saturday 14 May at 7pm admission by donation) and North Walsham Parish Church (Saturday 28 May 7pm, admission £5 as part of the churches exhibition of church vestments.) They will feature a selection of varied short pieces of music from both sides of the Atlantic and spanning 500 years of music making. The choir is particularly pleased to be showcasing music written in the early years of the 21st century by American composers such as Eric Whitacre, Stephen Paulus, and Morten Lauridsen, whose work O Magnum Mysterium has sold more copies of sheet music than any other in American history. This will be interspersed with English music by composers such as Elgar and Parry as well as arrangements of traditional folk songs.
David Ballard said “I’ve been tremendously proud of what Cantamus has achieved in my five years at the helm, during which time the choir has been able to attain very high standards of amateur music making, and gain a reputation for the wide variety of music that has been showcased. The choir has also had a reputation for being a very friendly group, and I can assure everyone that the internal warmth of the choir will radiate through these performances of familiar and not-so-familiar music. There will also be solos from local Contralto Jo Oxbourgh and Flautist Jodie Taylor, so truly something for everyone!” North Walsham Times 493 April 23rd 2016

Shakespeare in 400
Arts North Norfolk, has launched a competition to honour Shakespeare Day on 23 April, which marks his birthday and day he died, 400 years on.
Budding writers and thespians are invited to sum up a Shakespeare play in just 400 characters. The character count must include all letters and punctuation.
submit your short story to their box office at No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham NR28 9BP. It is free to enter and the deadline for entries is 27 April and you can submit as many entries as you wish.
More event listings can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org to book tickets for upcoming shows, call 01692 218060 or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday).
Joseph Ballard, director of Arts North Norfolk said “This is our way of being part of the international festivities that are celebrating Shakespeare’s work this year. Our competition is open all ages from primary school age to adults – I think it’s really important to involve young people in this project. I wanted to encourage people to sum up a play which in turn strips the plays back to the story. Theatre is about telling a story and Shakespeare did not write his plays just to be read in a classroom!” Joseph, who has directed, acted in and also adapted some plays of Shakespeare is keen to welcome entries from enthusiasts and also those who may be knew to exploring Shakespeare’s work a bit further. It is thought that Shakespeare had written 38 plays in his lifetime, but without correct records or evidence, some of the plays may even be the work of somebody else. He is also encouraging schools and groups to take part, based on classroom activity.
Prizes include: • Tickets to theatre shows and films at the Atrium Theatre (North Walsham) for the rest of the year. • Tickets to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s A Midsummer Nights Dream (on tour visiting Norwich). • A meal for two at the Cockerel Restaurant (themed nights) in North Walsham. • Shortlisted stories will be recorded and shared online and with the local media including radio.
Age categories are Primary school age, High school age, Young people 17-25 and Adults 25+. You can enter the competition online at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org or North Walsham Times 493 April 23rd 2016

Spring is really with us now, and as you will all have noticed, we have been very busy with promised improvements to our flower beds. Firstly, we have had our bed at the traffic lights on the bypass made secure, and a lot more attractive, with some railway sleepers. These will stop the bed from spilling onto the road as well as making the area much safer for us ladies to work on. Secondly the bed which is now to be called the Catholic Church bed has had a lot of work done on it and planted with hardy (we hope) shrubs. We consider this a big improvement to that entrance of the town and hope that this will look good for some years to come.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER ALPINE PLANTS
The love of alpines becomes more and more absorbing for many gardeners. The charm of the miniature, the romantic association with the mountains which are their traditional home, the satisfaction of the many easy and floriferous species and as they become more expert, the challenge of those plants which are more difficult to grow. All these factors help to explain their attraction.
It has been suggested that there are two extreme types of alpine plantsmen. There are those for whom a rockery is primarily a pleasant and colourful addition to the garden, and those whose delight is in the fascinating detail of each small plant – an enjoyment enhanced by segregating them in pots and pans and in bringing them nearer eye level in an alpine house, raised bed or cold frame.
Alpines can be grown in rock gardens, sinks and troughs, in gravel or cracks in the paving or in a cold greenhouse. A alpine house is of course the ideal, but an unheated greenhouse with very ample ventilation will give the plants the conditions they need. Whatever space and facilities you have there is room for alpines and here are some recommended plants that are in flower in my garden at the moment ■ Androsace sempervivoides – a fine Himalayan species which has rosettes of leathery leaves and spreads by runners. Develops mats from which arise numerous 5cm stems of pink flowers in April and May. An easy plant suitable for sunny screes or troughs.
Broadly speaking, alpine plants are those found in mountainous districts, that is, in the high alpine pastures above the tree line and in the actual rocky cliffs arising from them. However, most gardeners use the term alpines to include any species suitable for growing in the rock garden, trough or unheated alpine house. In general, this means plants that are reasonably hardy, perennial and compact in habit (usually six inches or less).
■ Saxifraga ‘Peach Melba’. One of the many wonderful saxifrages that are available. This variety is best grown in pots but there are saxifrages available for every situation. ‘Peach Melba’ has
beautiul large peachy-pink, flared flowers in sprays amongst the light cushion of smallleaved evergreen foliage. It is a slow growing perennial spreading to 15cms and prefers full sun or partial shade.
■ Tulipa ‘Little Beauty’. A dwarf botanical tulip with a beautiful blend of bright red-pink flowers with purple-blue centres. Many flowers are produced from a single bulb in April and at a height of just 12cms are perfect for rockeries. Choose a sunny spot where possible, if not partial shade is fine. Plant around 10 cm. deep in well-drained soil for best results.
■ Arabis caucasica ‘Little Treasure White’ is a compact variety of this popular perennial rock plant, which forms an evergreen mound covered for weeks in spring with fragrant white flowers. It is attractive to bees. Height and spread 10-15cms by 25-30cms. Suitable for rock gardens, as ground cover or covering sunny banks. Thrives in most soils but likes full sun. Cut hard back after flowering to maintain a neat shape.
Alpines plants are widely available in garden centres and there are also local specialist nurseries such as West Acre Gardens near Swaffham. Bob Wilkinson

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
Beer is presently associated with large breweries and public houses, which are currently subject to local supervision. One may rightly suspect that few of those who enjoy the pleasures of the amber liquid, are aware of the history and development of this popular beverage.
Norfolk Power Wash
Those who attended the March meeting of North Walsham Probus Club were suitably enlightened by Nicola Hems’ presentation of ‘Broadland Breweries, past and present’.

Ale, for example, is distinct from beer. The former may be the world’s oldest form of alcohol, and was a staple drink until the introduction of tea and coffee, since the water was often contaminated. Ale is made from malted barley or wheat while beer includes hops, which provides the bitter taste and extends its life.
We use the latest modern equipment to clean your exteriors.
Monks brewed ale in Norfolk since the 11th century, although it was also brewed in private homes, usually about 2% gravity. Commercial brewing began in licensed taverns from the mid 16th century, common breweries being established by the late 17th century.
Paving Driveways Roofs Gutters Patios Conservatories
Norwich was the third largest city in England until the industrial revolution, with a population of 35,000 rising to over 111,000 by the 19th century. It also possessed 27 breweries in 1836, reduced to seven by 1875. The reduction may be attributed to advances in technology, especially the use of steam, which only the larger breweries could afford.
By the early part of the 20th century Norwich boasted four breweries, Steward & Patterson, Bullards, Morgans and Crawshay and Youngs. Coltishall is presently better known as a World War II fighter base but, in the mid 18th century, was famous as a brewing centre. The immediate availability of suitable water, barley and accessible transport offered by the local waterways, gave the village considerable advantage. It also led to the introduction of wherries of which over 80 were constructed during the 19th century.
The merger of breweries, and the competition for profit, resulted in the production of keg beers and lagers compared to cask beers. The former were well packaged and sterile and had a longer life than cask beers, which rely upon the skill of the landlord. This has resulted in the introduction of smaller breweries such as St Peter’s and Woodforde’s, producing popular local brews.

Wetherspoons a Step Closer
An agreement is set to be reached which will enable North Walsham Town Council to move offices and clear the way for Wetherspoon’s to move into North Walsham.
North Norfolk District Council is expected to finalise a 10 year lease agreement for North Walsham Registrar’s office in Kings Arms Street from Norfolk County Council within the next few weeks.
It is hoped that with the leasehold agreement finalised and minor building work to the Kings Arms Street offices completed that North Walsham Town Council will be able to move from the current New Road premises into the new buildings before the summer.
Cllr John Rest, Cabinet Member for Assets at North Norfolk District Council said “Attracting new jobs to North Walsham and improving the shopping and leisure facilities in the town is a priority for North Norfolk District Council.
“We want to ensure that wherever possible we attract additional investment to the area and improve the shops and town centre for residents and visitors.
North Norfolk District Council has written to the town council to provide an update on the leasehold talks on Kings Arms Street and to set out how the district council’s property team could help the town council with the move.
The District Council is currently in talks with North Norfolk Community Transport and Citizens Advice to identify alternative accommodation so that the New Road property can be empty in time for the proposed sale to J D Wetherspoon.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham raise £4189 for Sport Relief
Colleagues from Sainsbury’s North Walsham have raised £4189 for Sport Relief.
The store helped to raise money for the nationwide charity event by holding a tombola, taking part in various cycling challenges, a swimathon challenge, and having a team in The Official Sports Relief North Walsham Mile. A group of our night shift colleagues walked from our store to Potter Heigham.

Good NHS Care Experience
In recent months, there has been much criticism of the NHS, some I know is justified, but I feel strongly that it is not balanced by stories of good experiences of the care it can provide.
I therefore would like to tell you of our experience of local NHS hospitals and doctors when my partner, Carole Sheppard became seriously ill last year. Unfortunately Carole, at just 57, did not survive her illness which was diagnosed as terminal very early. However, the care provided during her illness was second to none.
Because the chemotherapy is potentially very toxic, we had frequent visits to NNUH to have Carole’s blood checked. During all of these visits, we had nothing but admiration for the way the staff in the Colney Unit and the Acute Oncology Dept. treated both Carole and myself. It was clear that they worked under a lot of pressure, but at no time did that affect their professionalism and dedication to providing the best care they could.
As Carole’s disease progressed, so her mobility decreased and eventually she couldn’t leave home. At this stage, her care transferred to the community In 2014 after experiencing nursing team and Paston Surgery severe neck pain, it was in North Walsham. Again, the discovered that cancer had care provided was outstanding. eroded three of Carole’s Co-ordination between the vertebrae. There are many different contact from the Community Nursing Team, mutations and Carole’s was one that her oncologist District Nursing Team, and Doctor Bowman at NNUH had not seen before. However, she did a at Paston Surgery, each one adding to the lot of research and discovered that a common oral jigsaw of solutions to help us cope with a fast chemotherapy tablet had been effective at slowing changing situation. At no time did we ever the development of the cancer in a small number of feel we were alone in our battle to make life cases. In addition to radiotherapy to deal with the as comfortable as possible for Carole. cancer in Carole’s spine, the oral chemotherapy had an almost immediate effect and allowed Carole to have a relatively good life for almost nine months.

However, by the end of November 2015 it became obvious that Carole’s needs were too complex to be managed at home and she was offered a bed at Priscilla Bacon Lodge palliative care unit at The Colman Hospital in Norwich. Our experience of the care provided at PBL was absolutely outstanding, I would say exemplary, and it made a huge difference to Carole’s comfort, security and happiness in the last few weeks of her life. Also to my own well being, as all my worries about her care and contentment
Andy Aitken, Ruby Mabbs ( Carole’s mum) presenting a cheque in memory of Carole Sheppard to nursing staff at PBL (Nicola Ritchie, Lynne Eastick, Julie Hoath, Natalie Gooch. Angela Beard)
were taken away. This is very much a patient centred approach with the wellbeing of the patient at the forefront of the care provided. Every single member of staff we met or observed did everything possible to ensure that patients were as comfortable as possible, as pain free as possible, as content as possible, and received the best medical treatment available. They showed immense compassion and patience in sometimes difficult circumstance, and although always busy, made time to talk to us about Carole’s condition and treatment, giving us options when they were available, or telling us difficult news in a caring and sympathetic way. We were not alone in this experience as we saw and heard the other patients receive this same level of care.
I think it is important that the outstanding staff who go well beyond the call of duty in providing care to those with life limiting illnesses, receive recognition of their professionalism, dedication, care and compassion, which is why I am asking you to publish our story. We know that finances in the NHS are stretched to the limit so Carole asked that friends and family should make donations to Priscilla Bacon Lodge in lieu of flowers at her funeral, and on Wednesday 6 April, along with Carole’s mum Ruby, I was proud to represent those friends and family to present cheques for a total of £3220 to the PBL Support Group in memory of Carole. Every penny will go to improving the experience of patients and providing even better facilities for staff at PBL. Carole Sheppard
The palliative care provision in Norfolk is a service we hear very little about, and in our experience deserves more positive reports on the care they provide. Andy Aitken

Keep-In-Touch
Age Concern North Norfolk runs three Keep-In Touch (or KIT for short) Groups. They are local social groups for the over 55s, where people can meet new friends, learn new skills and get more involved within their local community. The groups are, essentially, coordinated by their own members, and those members can vary in age and circumstances. We have members who are widows, carers, married or single and we are always on the lookout for new members to join any of the groups at any time - many of our members go onto volunteer for our charity with a great range of volunteering opportunities available.
In no particular order, the three groups consist of:
• The Pop-In Group at Cromer who meet every Friday morning at The Cottage on Lounden Rd from 10am. A warm welcome always awaits you here, so go along for a cup of tea/coffee, a chat and make new friends. For more info contact our key volunteer at the Pop-In, Ann, on 01263 761508
Club that meet every fortnight in the Community Lounge at Anchor Close in Sheringham from 10am. All our welcome and the next group meeting is on 9th of May. For more info contact our key volunteer at the KIT Club, Ann, on 01263 761508
The Pop In Group at Cromer
We arrange outings, go for lunch, organise activities and trips as well as inviting speakers to all our groups. A talk by the local Arthritis Care coordinator is taking place at our Pop-In on Friday the 17 June.
Just some of the things we have planned for the coming few months include…
• The Voyager KIT who meet at St. Nicholas Room on Vicarage Street in North Walsham; a friendly group that meet every Wednesday from 2-4pm. The group takes part in various fun activities and offer a great way to meet new friends. For more info contact our key volunteer at the Voyager, Linda, on 07541 795133
• Lastly, but by no means least, The KIT
• A trip to the wonderful Blickling Gardens on 19 May to see the procession down the drive to commemorate the death of Anne Boleyn.
• The fantastic Marsham Hand Bells visit the Pop-In on Friday 20 May
• A trip on the train and a lovely meal in the picturesque setting of the riverbank in Norwich is planned for Friday 3 June.

GET SET FOR THE 2016 REDWINGS SHOW!
Entries are welcomed for Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s annual show on Sunday 15 May at Topthorn Equestrian Centre in Suffolk.
Redwings’ annual show offers something for everyone with classes for all ages and abilities. Whether you’re competing at your first event, looking to try your hoof at jumping or wanting to show what a rescued pony can achieve when given a second chance, this is the show for you. Indeed, the charity hopes the rescue class will be as popular as ever at this year’s show and welcomes rescued ponies from any charity to take part. Redwings also wants to give horses from every walk of life the chance to take part, so there are classes for retired racehorses, veterans and foreign breeds; not forgetting our affiliated Donkey Breed Society classes too.
After the introduction of their heavy horse classes last year, the charity is hoping for even more entries this year and to provide a real sense of competition for beautiful Shires, Suffolk Punches, Clydesdales, 18
Percherons and more. These classes were a real highlight of last year’s show for entrants and spectators alike, so the charity are eagerly anticipating a fantastic and varied heavy horse turnout!
Redwings Show organiser Stacey Harvey said “Last year’s show was our most successful one to date, and a super day was had by all. We are hoping to replicate that once again this year by providing the opportunity for riders and horses of all ages and abilities to come along and give showing a go in a relaxed and friendly environment. We are also really excited to be holding our heavy horse classes once again and hope to see some magnificent heavies this year”.
For entry details and to download this year’s schedule, visit www.redwings.org.uk/show-2016.
Photography at this year’s Redwings Show will be by Big Red Toad Photography and photographs will be available after the event.

North Walsham Heritage Centre
A meeting arranged by the North Walsham Heritage Group was held at The Atrium on Saturday 2 April and was well attended by representatives of many of the groups and societies in the town, as well as from the Church, the Town and District Councils.
The meeting was led by Glynn Burrows, Chairman of the NWHG and, after announcing the proposed site of the Heritage Centre at the former Dentist’s Surgery at 9, New Road, he outlined the Group’s thoughts and asked for feedback on a number of subject headings. The meeting was asked various questions related to the proposed North Walsham Heritage Centre and the responses have since been collated and will all be taken into consideration when the Group meets to finalise plans for the Centre.
The questions posed to the meeting were: North Walsham Heritage Centre: • what is it? • what should be in it? • who is it for? • who will run it? • who will pay for it?
Our Queen at 90
The final discussion asked for pledges of support from those present and many came forward offering help in many various guises. So what do we need?
Individuals can help in many ways: • stewarding • offering to donate money by either a one-off donation or by standing order • promoting the centre to visitors and friends • offering expertise or skills • offering items, photographs, documents, etc for the Centre • to use their contacts to help us (this can be very beneficial as we all know lots of people and there will be many who could help) • use the facility for meetings or just use the cafe when in town • helping to do behind the scenes jobs such as cataloguing, cleaning, etc.

The Bluebell Wood
I came upon it quite by chance, One sunny April day, A little wood of bluebells, Straight before me lay. I drank in the beauty round me, A carpet of deep blue, I wish I’d brought my camera To capture this stunning view. Sunshine dappled through the tall trees, Lighting up the vibrant blue, A blackbird sang his heart out, And the bees were busy too. A squirrel scurried past me, A beech nut in his paw, He climbed a tree so quickly, I gazed at him in awe. I sat upon the turnstile, Until the air grew chill, Then wandered back the way I came To the house upon the hill. Diane Berthelot

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Harvey is making good progress and we can now see what colour his coat will be. We are giving him some more time before sending his bloods off to be checked, which will confirm whether he is FIV positive or not but, in the meantime, he is receiving lots of fuss from his carers as he is a really affectionate cat that loves lots of attention and cuddles and one we all find takes up a great deal of our time.
We recently had 4 cats handed into our care because their owners could no longer look after them. All of them are quite young and also unneutered (with one being heavily pregnant and kittens due any day). Because the male cats had several scratches, our vets advised we blooded tested the younger three when they were neutered. Unfortunately, once again, we had an FIV positive result and are at present awaiting the result of further tests. Although Garfie had been living with the other cats, it was necessary to separate him from his family and move him to a pen on his own to avoid the risk of infecting them. His vet advised that, although you often get false positive results,

People often query why we promote neutering the male cats as well as the females. This is because the virus is picked up primarily through Harvey, very friendly FIV positive cat fighting or mating (although an infected female can also pass it on to her kittens). Unfortunately, unlike FELV, there is no vaccine available to protect your cat.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Some injuries are more common than others, and one of the most frequently encountered are cranial cruciate ligament injuries. Some people may well know about these knee ligaments from their own experience or through following professional sportspeople, but it happens to be a very common problem in dogs as well.
One such case was Ruby, a three year old Dogue de Bordeaux, who became acutely lame after chasing a ball. She was barely using the leg when she was brought in and examination revealed swelling in her knee joint and instability. This is because the cruciate ligaments help to stabilise the knee joint and are put under a huge strain when running or jumping. Further examination under sedation confirmed the damage to these ligaments and x rays revealed joint swelling and early signs of osteoarthritis.
As Ruby is such a large dog, it is unlikely that the joint will stabilise with rest alone (sometimes a viable option in small dogs). However, there are a few different surgical techniques used with this injury and fortunately, here at Westover we are able to offer both of the main options.
One method is to place a very strong suture across the joint to help secure it, a method that works very well in small to medium sized dogs. With Ruby weighing nearly seven stone this method is less likely to be successful. So instead, our orthopaedic surgeon, Mike Sims, placed a titanium implant into her tibia redirecting the force generated by the large quadriceps muscles to compensate for the failed cruciate ligament. This method has been adapted from a form of human surgery and provides a rapid return to function, with most of our patients weight bearing fully within a few days! Ruby responded very well to the procedure and, after following her strict post-op exercise regime, is now back out and enjoying her walks pain free!

A Night of Mystery awaits North Walsham with the Victorian Conjuror liners and television since his TV career began audiences. There’s a
An evening of amazing magic and unusual phenomena is set for the stage at North Walsham’s Atrium Theatre for Saturday 23 April.
Acts such as the ‘Curious Case of the Perfect Crime’, ‘Defying Newton’s Law of Gravity’ and an inspired take on one of Houdini’s famous masterpieces, are lined up in this light-hearted glimpse of the marvels of yesteryear. The show is hosted by the Victorian Conjuror and his assistants.
In real life, the team behind the show are magician Chris North, his wife Belinda and their young son Thomas. Chris has been performing magic for over 40 years all over the world, including famous stages, cruise
in 1977 with New Faces.
This original show has recreated the atmosphere and excitement of entertainment of the 19th century - from the streets of London to the parlours of a wealthy middle class and to the theatres and music halls. Magic enjoyed unprecedented popularity as the fear and superstition of an earlier age gave way to a sense of wonder and amusement.
Chris North, the magician behind the show said “I enjoy performing this show, it’s got all the great elements of theatre from the bygone era, supported by its historical context. I’ve spent a lot of time researching and developing the show to make sure it appeals to today’s

Norfolk Coast AONB Sustainable Development Fund now open for applications Got a great local project that needs funding to get it started?
Help could be at hand with the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), which is now open for applications. The Norfolk Coast Partnership, the managing body of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty administer the fund, which is aimed at local community groups specifically for projects that improve life for the coast and its people.
The fund can offer from £200 - £5000 to help get your project off the ground.
Not sure if your project fits the bill, why not take the criteria checklist test?
The deadline for applications is Friday, 6 May 2016, it is advisable to get your application in early for comments.
Now in its 12th year, the Norfolk Coast Partnership has helped fund over 60 projects via the Sustainable Development Fund; investing just under £1/2 million directly into the communities of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), realising a total of £1.5 million of the projects total value into the area.
North Walsham Times 493 April 23rd 2016
This year, the fund application process has been simplified and has now been opened up to smaller grants in order to try to attract more local community groups. There is a wealth of supportive documentation on line to help with your application. Take a look at the website www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk to find out more, see previously funded projects and take the checklist test.

New guide to care and support in Norfolk – a crucial time for information A new, updated Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults has recently been published in association with Norfolk County Council. It gives readers crucial information on how to access, and pay for, care services throughout Norfolk.
With Government plans to cap the costs of social care now postponed, it’s never been more important to have impartial information to guide you through choosing and paying for care and support. The guide helps readers to understand their options, highlights where to go for advice and gives information on how the paying for care system works. With no cap on care costs at present, this independent information is invaluable to help navigate the system.
The new edition of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults and accompanying website give information on all aspects of arranging care and support in Norfolk. It includes how to stay independent for as long as possible, the different care and support options available and what to look for when choosing a care provider. It also offers guidance on important issues such as paying for care and what financial assistance may be available from the local authority. There are comprehensive listings of all registered care services throughout Norfolk, plus checklists to help you ask the right questions when visiting services.
For free copies of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults contact Norfolk County Council on 0344 800 8020. It is also available throughout the region from outlets including Citizens Advice Bureaus, hospitals, Community Services, Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society. It can be downloaded from www.carechoices.co.uk and is available in spoken word. Further help and information can be accessed via the guide’s free telephone helpline on 0800 389 2077.
J’s WEDDING CARS
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
Robert Chamberlain, Managing Director of the guide’s publisher, Care Choices, commented “This is an invaluable source of information for anyone considering short or long term care in Norfolk, and contains vital information to help people decide what type of care and support is best for them.
“With no cap on the cost of care, finding a care service for yourself or a loved one that meets their needs and is affordable can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. This new Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults has been compiled to help people understand the process and offer them reassurance at every step of their journey.”
Care Choices is the UK’s largest independent publisher for social care and adults with additional needs. It is also the largest publisher of care directories for local authorities in England.

Indoor meeting - Nick Acheson 'Big Cat Quest' on 28 April 19:30 - 21:30 at Aylmerton Village Hall, http://aylmertonvillagehall.wix.com/northnorfolk - Nick Acheson grew up watching Bitterns and Bog Bush-Crickets in North Norfolk. A year spent in the Camargue and Crau during his French literature degree inspired him to seek bigger, wilder landscapes and, on completing his MSc, he moved to Bolivia. Here he spent ten glorious years ringing James' Flamingos and austral migrant flycatchers, lamping for Maned Wolves and Giant Armadillos, working with Aymará, Quechua and Chiquitano indigenous people on sustainable development projects, teaching yoga, and whistling sweet nothings to Golden-headed Quetzals. Yoga then took him to India, where he has spent almost three years tracking Tigers and Snow Leopards, cruising on the Brahmaputra, and speaking clumsy Hindi. On return to the UK he worked for two years for Norfolk Wildlife Trust and he continues to work freelance for NWT, RSWT and the Hawk and Owl Trust. When not shedding tears to the sound of Indris in Madagascar or watching Walruses and Belugas from zodiacs in the arctic, he thinks, writes and listens to Bach in a flint cottage by a duckpond and swims in the sea off North Norfolk. (Naturetrek) Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. A torch might be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.
NENBC 'The Big Sit' 8 May 04:00 - 04:00 - the aim of the Big Sit is to record the total number of species, seen from within a single 17ft circle, in a maximum 24 hour period, though most sites operate from dawn to dusk. Big Sit sites in the NENBC recording area currently include Felbrigg Park, Beeston Bump, Holt Lowes and Muckleburgh Hill. Members are encouraged to visit these locations and share in the fun. Anyone can participate - even create your own circle. From doing the Big Sit we hope to gain valuable data about visible migration and the birds in our area. Results will be collated and published in the NENBC newsletter (the Pied Flyer). If you are interested in creating a new Big Sit location, email us with the details at info@nenbc.co.uk by Friday 29 April.

The website also provides details about my Greek themed books. All are available to purchase through Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. The first to be published was ‘Timotheus Pserimos Puss’, a light hearted short story about a cat. This was followed by ‘On the Verge’, a novel based on a young woman’s diaries. Then there is my book of recipes which incorporates travelogues and is titled, ‘The 3R’s – Recipes Reflections & Reminsicences’. By the way, you don’t have to like Greece to enjoy my books.
I will be at the Overstrand Summer Fair on 24 July, where you can take a look at samples of my books, as well as being able to purchase signed copies. In October, as part of this year’s COAST programme of events, I will be giving a talk titled, ‘Writing by the Sea’. This will be an informal event where I will cover the pros and cons of self-publishing. By then I plan to have completed my fourth book - a collection of short stories.
If you buy one or all of my books – I do hope you enjoy my stories and recipes.

AWARENESS WEEKS: Parkinson’s 18 – 24 April & Bowen Therapy 12 – 18 April The overlap of Parkinson’s and Bowen Therapy Awareness Weeks gave me the idea to choose Parkinson’s as my ‘Awareness Subject’.
My professional association (Bowen Association UK) asked individual therapists to get out there in the community to bring awareness to the benefits of Bowen.
Parkinson’s is close to my heart as my brother (one of twins) was diagnosed some eight years ago, aged only 52. This has given me an insight in Parkinson’s with its many symptoms, its unpredictability and life-changing challenges.
So what’s on offer? I invite those with Parkinson’s /the symptoms of Parkinson’s and those affected by Parkinson’s (wider family, carer, friend etc) to come and have a 30 min hands on treatment – no charge – no further commitment. Just some time for you to relax and experience a Bowen Treatment.
What is Bowen Technique? The Bowen Technique is a drug-free, noninvasive, hands-on therapy, mainly done through light clothing, with the client sitting, lying or standing. Small rolling-type movements are performed over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body. One of the most profound
pressure, Bell’s palsy, dystonia, depression, anxiety, addiction, stress, hormonal imbalance, MS, ME and fibromyalgia..
As well as providing Parkinson’s and Stroke care, conditions treated include muscular-skeletal problems such as back, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain (also postreplacement), whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpel tunnel syndrome and sports injuries. Bowen can also help with a large variety of other conditions such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, migraine, IBS, high blood
Cornelis van der Does BTAA BAUK is an Advanced Level Practitioner of The Bowen Therapy, registered for over 20 years with the Bowen Association (UK), which requires members to maintain annual CPD courses, insurance cover and 1st Aid. In addition, he is ITEC A&Ph qualified.
The Holt Bowen clinic is at the Holt Consulting Rooms in Church Street. To book please call in or telephone reception on 01263 711712 or 01263 825438, 07944 099135 email bowenclinicnorfolk@gmail.com, mobile
Clinics also at Aldborough Surgery, Cromer, Sheringham and Norwich. Home visits by arrangement.
THEATRE CAFE'S PLEA FOR HELPERS
A busy community cafe, which feeds a theatre with vital funds, is putting out a plea for helpers. The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre is a key income stream that helps the venue stage drama, music, cinema and live screenings. Its growing popularity, however, means it needs more volunteers to keep pace.
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "The Hub is increasingly busy and we are struggling to keep on top of clearing the tables. We are very flexible and would welcome anyone who can spare time from a couple of hours a month to four hours a week." It was a chance to do rewarding work and be to be part of a team at a vibrant community arts centre, she added. "The money the coffee bar generates helps the theatre survive," said Mrs Thompson. The venue has a team of 86 volunteers doing a range of tasks. There is also a need for people to help run the evening bar in the 60-seat Hub - training is provided. Anyone interested should contact Debbie Thompson on 01263 822117 debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com or drop into the Hub for a chat. It is open from 9.30am to 4pm six days a week. Closed Sundays.

effects Bowen can have is in shifting the Autonomic Nervous System, which controls over 80% of our body’s functions –from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance. This subtle but dynamic process allows the body to release stress at a very deep level, re-align and address imbalances in functions and chemical composition and, as far as possible, restore homeostasis (physiological equilibrium) within the body.

Martin Castle, Head Teacher, is quoted as saying ‘we are so lucky to have Nicki Jones, a grandparent, who is very creative and hands on with lots of theatrical experience working with Katayoun Dawlatshahi, our artist in residence, to work with our pupils and their families on the Den Day. It’s an experience that our children will cherish and really does offer an insight into our strong ethos and values’.

Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Business Support team By Philip Lumb, Consultant Solicitor in the Business Support Team
Q1 I created an app which did well over Christmas & made some money. Do I have to tell my employer? This will largely depend upon what is contained in your employment contract and the circumstances in which the app was created. Many employment contracts contain provisions which mean that anything created in the employer's time (i.e. your working hours) will belong to the employer and not to you. If you created the app during working hours, and/or on work equipment, it could infer that the app does in fact belong to your employer, in which case you would need to notify them and account for any money made. There may also be clauses in your employment contract which restrict you from operating in competition with your employer. Depending on the wording of the restrictions, you may be in breach of your contract if your app competes with your employer's products and/or services.
Q2 I am looking at buying a Franchise in 2016. How could a Solicitor help me choose the right opportunity? A Solicitor will meet with you to ascertain your objectives and what you are seeking from the opportunity. They will then help by reviewing the franchise agreement, explaining the terms of business and assessing whether it is a good fit for your objectives. They can also help by trying to negotiate better or more suitable terms of the agreement for you if you want them to do so. There are many aspects to consider when buying a franchise, such as intellectual property rights and what licences and/or ownership you have in relation them. You will also need to give consideration to employment matters, such as having contracts of employment for any employees you may take on and policies and procedures for matters such as grievances

and disciplinary issues. If you require a premises for your franchise, a solicitor can also help you with negotiating the terms of a lease and advise as to the title of the building too, for example by checking if there are any covenants which will prohibit you from carrying out the business activity. Solicitors are usually unable to give financial advice so bear in mind you are also likely to want to speak to an independent financial adviser to discuss aspects arising from the accounts and to advise more generally on the financial opportunities different franchises may offer. Whenever considering buying a franchise it is worth bearing in mind the British Franchise Association Code of Ethics, which governs the behaviour of franchise practitioners.
Q3 I see a lot about crowdfunding investments these days. Are they regulated under UK law like other investment vehicles? Crowdfunding has become very popular recently as it helps entrepreneurs reach a large number of people who each invest a small amount in a new business to help it reach its funding objective. There are three forms of crowdfunding: donation (people give money to organisations whose activities they want to support), debt (money is lent to the organisation in return for interest payments and a repayment of the capital over a period of time) and equity (direct or indirect investment by buying products such as shares or debentures). The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) established industry regulation last year for debt-based and investment-based crowdfunding, but it is based on the type of product offered rather than the risk profile of the business that will benefit from the investment. As these forms of crowdfunding are activities regulated by the FCA under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA), you should make sure that only a person or firm authorised by the FCA advises you in relation to this. Donation-based crowdfunding is not included in the regulation.
Born out of a one-off concert at Cromer’s historic Pavilion Theatre featuring Fairport Convention in 1998, this May sees Norfolk’s flagship folk and roots event ‘Folk on the Pier’ celebrating 18 years since its inception in 1999.
Moreover it now proudly boasts the patronage of none other than the veritable ‘Godfather of Folk-Rock’, Ashley Hutchings MBE, who keenly accepted the post in 2014, often citing the Cromer festival as a ‘friendly indoor mini-Cropredy’ From the start the festival was created by, produced, directed and for many years now funded by Scott Butler, a long-time fan of many aspects of folk and roots music who unashamedly admits a longstanding penchant for English Folk-Rock, the genre that has always formed the bedrock repertoire of this annual popular event.
Like most festivals, ‘Folk on the Pier’ has had its ups and downs, including a particularly difficult year in 2004 when the Pavilion Theatre was not available due to pier renovation works, and found itself decanted to marquees on a clifftop car park in Cromer, enduring some of the most inclement unseasonal weather possible to add to its difficulties. Most importantly though it didn’t miss a year and cold marquees aside, the festival’s ever increasing and devoted audience year on year instantly rebook around 30% of the full weekend tickets for the next year’s event. Sunday morning on Cromer Pier traditionally witnesses a substantial queue of regular audience politely waiting to snap up their favourite seat, without a single act for the following year having been announced!
However, the success of ‘Folk on the Pier’ is not just about programming, it must be said that the Pavilion Theatre is a major part of the magic and as well as a superb acoustic, as a celebrated variety theatre, has a unique atmosphere, a characteristic that Mr Butler has always been mindful of when programming artists. ‘Artists love playing the venue, and It was Fairport’s Dave Pegg who in 1998 first coined the expression ‘the Best Gig on the North Sea’, which has been the festival’s slogan ever since.’ says Scott.
This year’s line-up, if bookings are anything to go by, is as strong and varied as ever and includes performances from the likes of Steve Tilston, Richard Digance, Welsh group Calan, the Spikedrivers, Nancy Kerr and the Sweet Visitor Band, the Urban Folk Quartet and many more. Fairport also return and there is another unique UK performance from Breton squeezebox maestro Fred Guichen, as well as dynamic dance and music from the Demon Barbers XL Show. The usual fringe programme will also be on offer around Cromer.

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCA to meet NWSCB in Ko Doubles Cup Final The second semi-final of the Knockout Singles Cup saw Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Hubert Cheng host NWSCA’s Howard Lupton, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Andy Beane. The opener was a tactical corner to corner contest as Lupton’s variation of backspin pushed Thaxter whose top-spin saw him to a win in four. Next Bennell’s spins and variations stopped Baldock-Yaxley from getting into a rhythm and made him hesitate on his hitting as the Gresham’s player won each of the three sets 11-9. Next Cheng was at his mercurial best at times but also survived a momentary lapse in concentration as he beat Beane in four before Lupton picked up the visitors first point returning the whippy top-spin of Bennell with tremendous backspin to win a fantastic contest with the atmosphere electric at times in four. Thaxter’s control beat Beane in three to move Gresham’s one win from the final and their place was sealed as Cheng’s liquid forehands saw him to an 11-5, 10-12, 12-14, 11-6, 11-4 win against Baldock-Yaxley and Gresham’s School A to a 5-1 win. The same six players met again in the semi-final of the Knockout Doubles Cup and this time there was better news for NWSCA with three wins in five including a comeback from two down seeing them to a
5-1 win – the trend of recent years of NWSCA winning the doubles meetings between the two teams and Gresham’s faring the better in singles continuing. Gresham’s have however confirmed their status as champions of the Premier Division, although NWSCA enjoyed a 9-1 win against Aylsham A.
NWSCA have been very busy lately – in fact the team of Beane, Lupton and Baldock-Yaxley won two Cup games in one night. With the team drawn against the Backhander’s trio of Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner and the season beginning to draw to a close, the decision was made to attempt to play both ties in one evening at Cromer Tennis Club. The doubles kicked off proceedings at 7:00pm which NWSCA won 5-0 before the singles got underway at 8:45pm with Wilson (+1) beating Beane 35-34. However NWSCA came through 5-1 with close of play at 10:15pm! To round up the rest of the results starting with a 5-3 win for Sharks against NWSCE in the quarter-finals of the Handicap Doubles Cup. NWSCB continued their excellent season with a 5-0 win away against Gresham’s B and have also reached the semi-final of the Handicap
Singles with a 5-3 defeat of Dropshots, however NWSCD were beaten 5-2 by Gresham’s School A in their singles quarter-final. In the Premier Division NWSCA won a derby with NWSCD 9-1 – Stone taking the point for the lower team in five against Beane while NWSCB followed an 8-2 win against Aylsham A with a 9-1 defeat of Crosscourts. In the First Division NWSCC won their derby against NWSCE 6-4 and also beat Aylsham B 8-2 with Richard Porritt taking a maximum both times. Finally Andrew Weston picked up a good win in five against Fletcher Dyson as NWSCF lost 3-7 to Aylsham C in the Second Division.
As the season builds to a climax, NWSCB are still involved in all four Cups while NWSCA also have a presence in three of them. The two teams will meet in the final of the Knockout Doubles as well as the semi-final of the Handicap Singles. NWSCB also have a Knockout Singles final against Gresham’s School A to look forward to with the League champions hosting NWSCA in the semi-final of the Handicap Doubles with NWSCB away to Sharks in the other half of the draw.
With just one win from the last five, the Vikings have lost their way lately Home to relegation threatened Ruislip, they lost 29 -25 despite leading 20 - 12 entering the final quarter, whilst at fourth placed Thurrock, they went down 38 -26. With two games left they remain fifth, testament to their good form earlier in the season. The Raiders' good season continues. After defeating Wymondham they are in the final of the Norfolk 2nd XVs Cup.
Long-standing second row forward Chris Kent (pictured) was March's Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. He only returned to the side in February after breaking a leg in Summer 2014. "It is great to recognise his comeback in this way" said Coach Nick Greenhall. "Chris has worked incredibly hard for so long to get back to full fitness and is a great motivator." After eight seasons at Scottow, Chris is the twelfth highest points scorer in the Vikings' history with 240 points (48 tries). Amongst forwards, he is joint second with Gideon Rousseau, with only Kenny Dodds ahead.
The Vikings play their final League game at home to CS Rugby 1863 on 23 April. The winners meet Diss in the final at Crusaders ground in Little Melton on 7 May. Another date for the diary is the annual Rugby Sevens and Beer Festival at Scottow on Sunday 29 May starting at 11am.
