North Walsham Festival – The Battle Project
This year’s North Walsham Festival, organised by Arts North Norfolk, will run 18 to 26th June. Last year’s event attracted over 8,000 people to its events and this year there is much more to look forward to and many more ways to take part.
The 2016 Festival will mark the events of the 1381 Peasant’s Revolt and the Battle of North Walsham of the same year. The final weekend will see a recreation of the great Battle – without swords and armour but with dance!
Members of the local community, in and around North Walsham, are invited to take part in the Battle Project. A Medieval Camp taking place in the park over the weekend of the 25-26th June but the battle recreation to be different – a different way of interpreting the battle using dance. Anyone can take part, but the project will initially focus on engaging with boys and men in the project.

Continued from front cover... Workshops and choreography will be led by Glasshouse Dance, an outstanding dance company who specialise in working with contemporary dance in community settings. A series of workshops will take place which will lead up to the performance, to take place on the evening of Saturday 25 June in North Walsham Memorial Park. All workshops and elements of the project are free.
Individuals, groups, sports teams, schools clubs and families are all welcome to take part. More information can be found on the project website (where you can also sign up) at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org/ thebattle or email thebattle@artsnorthnorfolk.org. No experience of dance, performance or history is needed – it will be a fund project and something very different for everyone to take part in!
Joseph Ballard, director of the North Walsham Festival and CEO for Arts North Norfolk said “The Battle Project is a great way to get involved in your local Festival. We want lots of people to take part and learn a very simple piece of dance and then come together for the performance. The North Walsham Festival is about profiling the town and most important its people and local community. This is a big call out to everyone, including group leaders to help make the project a success. Everyone and anyone can take part of any age, any group or even business. We’re putting a focus on recruiting men and boys too we want our town to be known for doing things differently, embracing a warm community spirit.”
Other take part opportunities include North Walsham Knits, where people are asked to donate hand-knitted or crocheted items that will contribute towards a big art project, the Festival Parade (Sunday 26 June which leads to the Fun Day), Parade and costume workshops and there are volunteer opportunities to make it all happen.
For more information about the Festival and for other events, check out www.artsnorthnorfolk.org, call 01692 218060 or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday).

Council rewards Christmas ‘Dinner Lady’
At its meeting on Tuesday 25 April, North Walsham’s Town Mayor, Brenda West surprised Pauline Vincent when she invited her and all Councillors to step out into the evening sunshine, where she was presented with the Town Council’s Community Award for 2016.
Mrs Vincent, who had been brought to the meeting under false pretences through the collusion of the Council and her husband Roger, was presented with the award for her voluntary work over 20 years, helping to prepare the annual Christmas Day dinners held at the North Walsham Community Centre for those in the town living on their own, and from which she is now stepping down.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Water Awareness Training
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station Community Safety Team volunteers have been working with Richardson’s Boating Holidays, Stalham to deliver a Water Awareness session to their boatyard team. This training is part of the RNLI Respect the Water Campaign to reduce the number of deaths from drowning.
To this end on Thursday 14 April, the community safety team of Bob Mann, Dave Cato and Philip Smith were joined by Paul Barker - RNLI Community Incident Reduction Manager, Ady Barker - RNLI Trainer, and Liz Hustler and Jeremy Littlewood from HM Coastguard.
This team delivered Water Awareness training
to 15 members of the team from Richardson’s Boating Holidays, giving information on cold water shock and how it effects people falling into water, basic first aid information, hypothermia and how and who to call for help.
Then they moved onto the practical of line throwing and recovering people from water while not putting themselves in danger. The team spent two and a half hours on this training. To finish the session there was an exercise with multiple people in the water to be rescued with all the Richardson’s team working together to reinforce their training.
Chris Clarke, boatyard manager said “All the team members who attended were fully engaged and their feedback was really positive.
From a training point of view I can see that this will improve safety onsite should either a guest or team member enter the water.”
Paul Barker, RNLI Community Incident Reduction Manager said “To see organisations engaging in safety awareness training is very positive and demonstrates how important safety is to organisations on the broads. Working with the community is the best way to ensure continued and improved safe water usage. It’s about practicing skills and developing safety awareness, which is what has been proven today so that more people can enjoy and respect the water.”

Bluebell Pond Spring Clean
Although it was raining early morning on Sunday 24 April, by 10am we had blue skies and the volunteers had arrived ready to start the Spring clean. Great care had to be taken to make sure we protected the frogspawn and the other wildlife within and around the pond.
We had George Blackburn & Tony Thirtle (Town Councillor) working in the pond removing dead leaves and other rubbish. The rubbish was then transported by Tony Wiles, Eric Seward (County & District Councillor), Kevin Hogger (volunteer from Cromer), Danny Lincoln, Micky Gotts and Roy Haynes to the skip. Rita Smith was on hand at NAAFI break to hand out drinks and refreshments
I would like to thank Cliff & Chris Cushion, Mike Kirby, Adam and Chris, who are all great supporters of the Bluebell Pond Society. Finally many thanks to Granville Yaxley who keeps the grass in good order.

Over the last year, local people donated 25 tonnes of food to Cromer & District Foodbank, and over 100 people volunteered. Local schools, businesses and faith groups have provided vital support to the foodbank, enabling us to give three days’ nutritionally balanced food and support to people in crisis.
As well as providing emergency food, Cromer & District foodbank provides essentials like washing powder, nappies and hygiene products to families who are struggling, as well as signposting them to other services in the local area. Cromer & District foodbank are partnering with Citizens Advice to provide additional services such as welfare advice, budgeting help and debt support at the foodbank itself, helping people to break out of crisis.
Ella King, Cromer & District Foodbank Manager, says “Behind these statistics are real people in real crisis through no fault of their own.”

Trusts have received all sorts of bad press over the last few weeks. They have become emblematic of underhand arrangements designed to deprive HM Treasury of their dues by those more than able to pay.
The best and most frequent reason is to leave assets, often by Will on death, to children, the young or financially-immature. This way the funds can be used to help with their upbringing or education, at the discretion of those with their best interests at heart. Often, the funds are held back until they reach not just 18 or 21 but more often 25. I have seen ‘vesting ages’ of as late as 30, where the parent or grandparent fears for the child and/or there is much growing up to be done. In the meantime, the trustees can make payments to or for the benefit of the eventual recipient.
Let us examine some of the common misunderstandings.
• Trusts are only for the wealthy: wrong.
• Trusts are a way of concealing the true ownership : ah well, there is more than a grain of truth in this; but the purpose of setting up a trust is often primarily protective and is usually with the best intentions.
Indeed, trusts can be a way of continuing to exercise control ‘from the grave’; but usually with kind intentions.
• Trusts are for avoiding tax : generally, this is not the case. Trusts have their own tax system which, put simply, often taxes them as severely as the very highest earners. If the income is paid out to beneficiaries, then usually they can claim back that higher rate tax so the income they receive is taxed at the same level as their own income.
Trusts are also a way of making gifts to those who are vulnerable so as to be able to drip-feed funds to them throughout their life without making them ineligible for state benefits.
Trusts can be managed so that beneficiaries with drink, drug or other difficulties, which it is hoped they will in time overcome, can have the funds paid to them when they will make better use of them.
What is certain is that trusts are complicated and the law behind them is often misunderstood or poorly grasped, including by financial journalists eager for a quick headline.
The main use of trusts in tax planning is to pass assets on, without any reservation of benefit by the giver, without losing control and without seeing the funds dissipated or otherwise
So, why create a trust, if not for nefarious reasons?

Trusts arose as a legal concept when the Crusaders left their castles to others to look after whilst they went off to the Holy Land and in case they did not come back. Trusts have an honourable English legal tradition and must continue to do so.

Asparagus and parmesan risotto
What a lovely time of year here in Cromer, with the blossom through on the apple trees and the new herb garden flourishing under the watchful eyes of Estate Manager Nigel and Head of Herbs Ann Graveling. The chefs wander through the Orangery to harvest the fresh leaves and flowers (without stopping at the bar of course…!) and get them straight onto the plates and into the restaurant. Delicious.

Bacton to Walcott Coastal Scheme – Downing Street Meeting Mob: 07900 252168
A high-level meeting with Government was held last month to discuss the Bacton to Walcott Coastal Management Scheme and its potential funding.
North Norfolk District Council, Norman Lamb MP, the Environment Agency, The Crown Estate and the Operators of Bacton Gas Terminal met with the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, The Right Hon Oliver Letwin MP.
The meeting, held at 9 Downing Street, discussed the potential funding and sought wider Government support for the coastal management project for the terminal and the adjacent villages of Bacton and Walcott.
The scheme, if it is delivered, could involve ‘sandscaping’ the shoreline, effectively using high volumes of additional sand and natural processes to protect the coast.
It is hoped that the scheme may attract further government funding to overcome an estimated shortfall in funds. Costs could be significantly reduced if sand could be taken from a new site offshore from Bacton.
consider going ahead with their self-funded coastal protection scheme if funds cannot be found for a wider public scheme. This would be subject to the normal planning and consent processes and need to demonstrate mitigation for the wider coastal frontage.
Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council, Cllr Angie FitchTillett said “This was a good opportunity for us to present our case at the highest level of Government so there is a clear understanding of why this work is vital for the community.”
The scheme has been modelled and work is currently underway on the environmental considerations.
The Bacton Terminal Operators may have to
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “I believe it is essential to find a way to ensure that Bacton and Walcott benefit. It would not be acceptable for the project to be limited to protecting the gas terminal. I am grateful to Oliver Letwin for seeing us. Now the government must find a way of ensuring that the full scheme can go ahead.”

Leave Campaign North Norfolk Co-ordinator
Norfolk Power Wash
Following designation of the official ‘Leave’ campaign in the upcoming EU referendum, Jack Smith has been appointed the ‘Vote Leave’ North Norfolk coordinator.
Renew your Driveway or Paving Clean your Roof and Gutters Renovate your Patio or Conservatory
The campaign will focus on street stalls in the various market and seaside towns of North Norfolk.
We use the latest modern equipment to clean your exteriors.
Successful stalls have already been held in Sheringham and Wroxham. Jack Smith said “I look forward to working hard with anyone, from any political persuasion, to get a Leave vote on 23 June. This is the biggest decision the British people will ever make. We’ve a clear choice, do we want to stay in the ever federalising EU, which has plans for an EU Army, police force and border force, or do we break away, make our own future and regain independence, making our own trade deals, policing our own borders and protecting our NHS?”
Paving Driveways Roofs Gutters Patios Conservatories
Why Vote Leave? To stop sending £350 million to Brussels each week, and use the money more wisely, on our priorities, such as the NHS and schools. We can truly regain control over our borders, and make the British laws and courts supreme again in this country.

The Award was made for the team’s quality and innovation, promotion and best use of resources in service to the District Council’s Chairman, and is designed to recognise the contribution to the Council’s overall service provided to the community.
NNDC Chairman Annie Claussen-Reynolds said “I am delighted the Democratic Services Team has been recognised for the support and hard work they consistently put in. They are a small, dedicated team and were up against much larger City Councils for this award. This is a significant achievement.”
The Civic Office of the Year 2016 was awarded to the following teams: 1st Place: Cornwall Council 2nd Place: Rugby Borough Council 3rd Place: North Norfolk District Council
A spokesperson from the National Association of Civic Officers said “Our congratulations go to North Norfolk District Council for their very thoughtful and interesting submission.”
The National Association of Civic Officers has promoted the Civic Office of the Year Award for the past 15 years and the Award has been won by a range of Councils from a very large City Council to a small Town Council with a part time Civic Officer.
Cllr Judy Oliver Cabinet Member for Legal, Electoral and Democratic Services said “Local councils across the country are facing difficult times and everyone’s resources are being stretched. So, to not only do a job well, but to be acknowledged as one of the best teams in their field, is an outstanding accolade for the Democratic Services Team. I’m incredibly proud of their work.”

VACANCIES Elite Care are based in Cromer and we have both Full-time and Part-time vacancies for domiciliary support workers to join our growing team.
This is not an easy job but it is an extremely rewarding role undertaking the support of vulnerable adults within the community. This involves every aspect of their needs - personal care, emotional support, companionship, shopping, assistance with eating, medication etc.

Elite Care Cromer have moved from Louden Road to Brook Street in Cromer. Larger premises will prove an asset for the company in many ways. "This was absolutely key for me," said owner Tee Carver. "We now have all the space and facilities we need in one place. This allows us to ensure
You must be a dedicated individual and genuinely want to do the work, it is not a light hearted undertaking. The work varies from a day’s worth of pop-in visits, to longer sits, to live in and night sits.
A car is essential, we cover much of North Norfolk. Experience is preferred, but we would give full training to the right individual. Persons with criminal records cannot be accepted. our hand-picked staff are properly supported with training and mentoring centrally. Our objective is to provide the kind of care that is delivered with empathy for those we serve, supporting independence, respecting individuality and privacy. It is for that reason we have never undertaken 15 minute visits; we view them as worthless; 15 minutes is simply not enough time to fulfil any task efficiently. Above all we listen and pay attention to detail, we ask ourselves how would we want to be treated in your shoes." Tee continued, "Our staff love the new premises with nice kitchen at the back - it's so much more comfortable, staff are able to pop in during the day and have a break, they are already using the training room for study sessions. Our clients will also feel more comfortable in the spacious reception area. The recent ‘Open Day’ proved a huge success and Tee has resolved to make this an annual event. “It has been lovely to welcome service users back since the Open Day day who simply called in for a cup of tea” she said. Elite Care was formed to fill a perceived gap in the Home Care sector, Tee, the Registered Manager, had difficulty in securing the kind of care she wanted for her mother, a Dementia sufferer. "As a growing enthusiastic team we aim to serve as your competent, enthusiastic and reliable care team. Our staff will always accommodate your needs with professional, attentive service, the focus will be on your abilities rather than something you cannot do. We are registered with the Care Quality commission and all our staff are DBS checked and undertake mandatory training including the New Care Certificate." "Come in and have a cup of tea soon."

New guide to care and support in Norfolk – a crucial how to stay independent for as in spoken word. Further help and information time for information long as possible, the different care can be accessed via the guide’s free telephone
A new, updated Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults has been published in association with Norfolk County Council. It gives readers crucial information on how to access, and pay for, care services throughout Norfolk.
With Government plans to cap the costs of social care now postponed, it’s never been more important to have impartial information to guide you through choosing and paying for care and support. The guide helps readers to understand their options, highlights where to go for advice and gives information on how the paying for care system works.
With no cap on care costs at present, this independent information is invaluable to help navigate the system.
The new edition of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults and accompanying website give information on all aspects of arranging care and support in Norfolk. It includes
and support options available and what to look for when choosing a care provider. It also offers guidance on important issues such as paying for care and what financial assistance may be available from the local authority. There are comprehensive listings of all registered care services throughout Norfolk, plus checklists to help you ask the right questions when visiting services.
For free copies of the Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults contact Norfolk County Council on 0344 800 8020. It is also available throughout the region from outlets including Community Service Centre’s, hospitals, Careers Support Centre’s, Age UK and the Alzheimer’s Society. It can be downloaded from www.carechoices.co.uk and is available
helpline on 0800 389 2077.
Robert Chamberlain, Managing Director of the guide’s publisher, Care Choices, commented “This is an invaluable source of information for anyone considering short or long term care in Norfolk, and contains vital information to help people decide what type of care and support is best for them.
“With no cap on the cost of care, finding a care service for yourself or a loved one that meets their needs and is affordable can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. This new Norfolk Guide to Care and Support for Adults has been compiled to help people understand the process and offer them reassurance at every step of their journey.”
Room available at Rose Meadow in North Walsham
Mothers’ Union
Jim Page from Cromer Lifeboat came to our April meeting and gave a most enlightening talk on the history of Cromer Lifeboat and the RNLI.
Cromer had a lifeboat and crew in 1804, long before the formation of the RNLI, who took over responsibility for the station in 1857. Back in 1830 the new lifeboat cost in the region of £160 - today the high tech self-righting boats cost approximately £3.5million.
The most celebrated member of the Cromer lifeboat crew is Henry Blogg, who was coxswain for 38 years and is still the most highly decorated coxswain on record.
The modern Tamar Class lifeboat can right itself in rough seas in two minutes and has the capacity to carry 105 casualties plus a crew of seven and, at times, a medic. The time taken, from receiving an alert on their pagers to launching the boat, is approximately eleven minutes, day or night.

North Walsham Live Aid Massive Weekend of Rock It was another huge feast of rock music at the North Walsham Live Aid weekend last month.
Friday night saw The Burning Crows, who are about to start their UK tour, kick off with hot rock followed by Cluel Folk with their dark folk music. Next on stage was the incredible Rolling Stones tribute band, The Rollin Clones, possibly the best tribute act on the circuit.
Saturday evening began with some acoustic guitar and vocals from local act Ace, then more classic rock with Raw Edge then a music mix from Pure Passion, ‘excellent vocals from these ladies and their bass man and keys player’.
The lycra- clad Glamtastics wowed the crowd with ‘the vocals of angels and music from the glam era’. Walkway took time out to play for North Walsham Live Aid following a very successful tour backing Status Quo, closing one of the best Live Aid events ever.
The secret and rock memorabilia auctions were hugely successful. Top item was a guitar bearing the signature of the. late B.B.King, raising £1,700.
Bidding was brisk, and brilliantly handled by regular auctioneer Charles Homer Glister, with lot descriptions from Barry Holden. The auction items were displayed by members of the Holden family.
Walsham girl Jorja Smith was also presented with a signed photo of her hero Bear Grylls via ‘Wish upon a Star’, part of North Walsham Live Aid.
This year the event was dedicated to local DJ Gary James who sadly passed away last year.

Unique and beautiful cushions inspired by the Norfolk landscape to go on show
Stunning cushions inspired by some of Norfolk's most beautiful vistas will go on show at a unique exhibition later this month.
birth of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, who was responsible for the design of many of the charity's most stunning gardens.
The Spirit of Felbrigg Landscape exhibition features more than 40 beautiful cushions especially created by local textile artists and stitchers from across Norfolk.
Organised by the Norwich branch of the Embroiderers' Guild, the exhibition will see the custom-made creations displayed around the famous National Trust property which inspired them.
During the exhibition, which runs from Saturday, 30 April to Wednesday 29 June some of the artists who created the cushions will also be demonstrating their skills to visitors.
On Wednesday 25 May and Sunday 12 June exhibition goers will be able to meet and see adult stitchers from the Guild in action, while on 2 June a special half-term event will be held by the award-winning Young Embroiderers' group.
The event is part of a nationwide collaboration between the National Trust and the Embroiderers' Guild to mark the 300th anniversary of the
designers.
At Felbrigg, the gardens are thought to have been influenced by Suffolk-born and Norwich-educated Humphry Repton, who lived nearby. Repton is often regarded as the spiritual heir to Brown, and one of the last great English landscape
The diverse cushions produced for the exhibition reflect many aspects of the Felbrigg estate including its formal lawns and borders, its woodland, and the Grade II listed walled kitchen garden, as well as the surrounding north Norfolk landscape.
"Our members have produced dozens of unique works of art for this fantastic anniversary exhibition, and it is a real delight for them to be shown off in the historic surroundings of Felbrigg Hall," said Embroiderers’ Guild committee member Jacqueline Goffin.
"Lush textiles have long been associated with our grand
country houses, from pieces of tapestry and fabric art in their own right to impressive upholstery, curtains, and other soft furnishings.
"That tradition is well alive at Felbrigg, as shown by the recent restoration of their ornate tapestry carpet in the library, produced using replica traditional looms. There are so many techniques and styles that are intimately interwoven with a place like Felbrigg, and it is an honour for us to be a small part of that heritage."
The exhibition is open daily from 30 April to 29 June. Entry to the exhibition is included within the normal admission charges for Felbrigg Hall.

Cromer Sea Defence Work Comes to a Close
Work to help protect Cromer from rising sea levels and potential storm damage has come to a close more than two years after it started on site in January 2014.
The £8million pound scheme, carried out by contractors VolkerStevin, was increased significantly to include repairs to the sea defences and foreshore infrastructure caused by the exceptional storm surge of December 2013.
With a pause for the summer seasons (end of April to end of September 2014 and 2015) the focus has been on ensuring Cromer Promenade, the sea defence foundations, walls and groynes are strong enough to help protect the town for future years.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett said “This has been a major piece of work and it’s been important to the district council to make sure that access has been maintained to the pier and the RNLI lifeboat station during the 18
work, and I’m pleased to say we have achieved that.
“I would like to thank the traders and businesses for their understanding throughout this work, which has been focused on protecting the town for future years.”
The groynes and parts of the sea wall date back to 1836 which although they have been regularly maintained and enhanced over the years need regular works to ensure they remain fit for purpose.
Particular care has been taken in both designing and constructing the new seawalls, many of which are listed structures. The work to maintain and refurbish the promenade and embedded artwork has improved the appearance of the promenade as well as providing a stronger surface. A smaller project to enhance the groynes will now be worked on following the completion of the major works to Cromer sea defences. North Walsham Times 494 May 7th 2016

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Our lovely Harvey gave us some cause for concern recently as he had a nasty tummy upset and was very quiet, not his normal self. He was not coming to the front of his pen for a fuss when his carers arrive, which was very unusual. As he was in such poor condition when he arrived this is not really surprising, so a visit to the vets was needed to get his recovery back on track. He had a scan to rule out any underlying problems and thankfully nothing was found. He is now on medication and is such a good boy as he regards his tablets as a treat so they quickly disappear. Chicken and fish meals have been offered to him, and although he liked the fish, it is evident that he prefers chicken.

As she was still debonairdogs@btinternet.com aggressive at this stage, it was decided the best course of action was to get her neutered and blood tested straight away. Thankfully, the blood test was negative and since her operation she has once again become a friendly little cat. It is fortunate that she came into care as there were children in her previous home and they could have been badly bitten. Although we have never experienced a situation like this before it is something that can happen when a cat is pregnant or has kittens.
Our friend and fellow cat lovers will be delighted to learn that we are once again holding a sale in the St Benets Hall on 14 May. For details please check the ‘What’s on Where’ section.

Outdoor Event - Pigney’s Wood & Dilham Canal 15 May 09:00 - 13:00 a walk along the Dilham Canal, with visits to Pigney’s Wood NR, Witton Heath and Bacton Woods.
This event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders. Meet at 0900 at the car park for Pigney’s Wood (TG 297322). Take the Bacton Road (B1159) north from North Walsham, and then the left turn (Hall Lane) immediately after crossing the Dilham Canal (brown sign for Pigney’s Wood). Follow Hall Lane to the car park for Pigney’s Wood, NR just past Stone Cottage (about 1 km). The postcode for Stone Cottage is NR28 0SH. We will walk through the wood, down to the canal and then loop back to the car park; the duration will be about 2 hours and we will encounter woodland, arable and river valley habitats.
Because the section of the Dilham Canal south from the B1159 bridge is undergoing renovation (and hence is rather difficult walking and relatively birdless), we will then drive to Bacton Woods for a walk through there and Witton Heath. This section should also be just about two hours, and the car-park is on the NE side of Bacton Wood (postcode NR28

Honeymoon couple donate wedding money to Cromer RNLI
John and Carole Cheshire, who hail from Nottingham, were married last month after many years together. The couple, both in their seventies, had been together for many years but decided to tie the knot whilst on holiday in Venice last year.
Carole had proposed to John on three successive Leap Years but with no success, then whilst they were on a gondola last year, John popped the question.
Having both been married before and with their house furnished with all they need, they decided to ask wedding guests to give donations to the RNLI. A poem was used in the wedding invitations which included the lines:

COME AND TRY CROQUET
It’s Spring! The ideal time to learn how to play croquet – or to take it up again if you have played it before. Bodham Croquet Club – tucked up the corner of Bodham playing field – is providing instruction and an opportunity to try out this fascinating game on each Wednesday afternoon during May, June and July. Croquet comes in many different forms. However, there are two’official’ forms of the game, each played to international level - ‘Association Croquet’ and ‘Golf Croquet’. Both forms have a handicap system permitting balanced games between people of different ability. They also use the same equipment (mallets and hoops) and the same lawn, but the two forms have very different natures and can be attractive to people with different personalities. ‘Association’ has ancient roots. For the game as we know it, the first set of official rules was defined in the 1860s, the heyday of the game, particularly favoured by ladies looking for partners. A form of croquet with a high strategic element, ‘Association’ can be likened to snooker - the person in play on the lawn, by obtaining extra shots, can build up

‘breaks’ and go through several (or many) hoops in his turn. When no more progress is possible the opponent can then be left in an almost impossible position! ‘Golf’ croquet, on the other hand, is much more of a sociable game. All players congregate together on the lawn and take it in turns to have one hit at their ball. Technically, however, it can be as skilful as ‘Association’. It is a much newer game than ‘Association’ but has grown enormously in popularity in the last two decades. Both forms of the game are played at Bodham and will be covered in the Wednesday afternoon sessions. Anyone interested should turn up for a 2pm start, wearing softish shoes. Attendance for the first three sessions is absolutely free and all equipment will be provided. For more information call Barry on 01263 715878.

SUMMER ACTOR HAS NURSING CAREER IN WINGS TOO
A young actor is learning nursing skills as well as lines as he prepares for a summer drama season in his native Norfolk.
as schoolboy Salty in Teechers during the 2013 summer season when he also appeared in the farce Tom Dick and Harry. Ryan returned in 2014 for parts in Neville’s Island, Irma Vep, and Kiss of Death.
Ryan Starling is taking two roles in the Rep programme at Sheringham Little Theatre. But he is also studying a nursing degree to help bolster his finances, and “do something worthwhile,” during the spells between acting jobs, so the 24-year-old from North Walsham has been appearing in operating theatres as well as community arts theatres as he pursues his twin careers.
Ryan stressed that although he is working hard towards his nursing degree, drama remained his main goal and love.
“Acting is the main thing and always will be. It is just a case of there being no guarantees and I don’t want to end up struggling for money all my life,” he said.
Ryan explained “It is difficult to support yourself financially as an actor. Some people do bar and restaurant work, but I wanted to do something useful which also gave me the flexibility to put acting first.”
He is in the first year of a three year adult nursing degree course at the University of East Anglia which has also seen him gaining experience in operating theatres and community hospitals. He aims to be a ‘bank nurse’ - picking up stand-by hospital work when he is free, but also able to head off to auditions at the drop of a hat.
This summer Ryan will play Peter, one of the Railway Children in the classic adventure story, which is one of the Sheringham venue’s fivestrong summer drama line-up. He is also Tristram in the Alan Ayckbourn farce Taking Steps.
It will be Ryan’s third season at the theatre, whose youth outreach work has helped him
Sheringham Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “We are pleased and proud that our outreach work helped Ryan towards his chosen career – and delighted to showcase his skills again in our summer season. “It can be tough for young actors and Ryan has shown a lot of maturity by adding nursing skills to help him provide finances while he furthers his dream.”

forge his acting career.
Ryan was born and raised in North Walsham where dad Keith Starling is an electrical engineer and mum Diane a secretary at the junior school.
He first took to the stage at North Walsham High School, where he loved drama lessons and took the lead role in Macbeth. He joined the Sheringham Little Theatre’s outreach group, and went on to help run sessions for them.
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
Ryan also got involved with productions at Paston Sixth Form College and its Far East Theatre Company before heading to the Rose Bruford Drama School in Kent.
His first job as a newly-qualified professional actor was back at the Sheringham theatre
Theatre director Debbie Thompson said: "The roles are voluntary and would suit experienced actors who would like the opportunity to work in a professional environment. It could be a competent amateur from a community drama group, or a young person on a gap year before going to drama school."
The roles are a big commitment, with rehearsals in August and shows running from August 10-16 (7.30pm daily and matinees on the 11 and 13).
Specific requirements are: • One female aged 40 plus to play various characters • One female aged 18-30 with roles including a child • A male aged 18-30 playing a variety of roles including a child.
Auditions are on May 8 at Sheringham Little Theatre from 11am to 1pm. Applicants are asked to email a brief resume in advance to debbie@sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Evolution of dermal fillers - do we now have something that delays ageing?
• • • • • • • • • •
Dermal filler treatments are non-surgical treatments Fillers can soften lines and wrinkles Fillers can be used to restore lost facial volume Fillers can be used to provide a three-dimensional facelift New research shows they can hold back years There are more than 200 fillers in use, not all are safe Most experts recommend avoiding permanent fillers Improper use can cause problems Treatments are largely unregulated so choose your practitioner wisely At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we specialise in providing a natural look and work hard to provide a safe and comfortable treatment.
Restylane range of dermal fillers has been used for 20 years and 28 million treatments have been carried out worldwide.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic says “they come and they go, but Restylane has stood the test of time. It is not that we shy away from new treatments. For those of you who know us-we have invested heavily in new technology and have 18 state-of-the-art lasers and light devices.”
Dr Gheyi has personally carried out thousands of Restylane treatments over the last ten years and it works, is very cost effective and it lasts longer than many other products on the market.
“When we first started doing dermal filler treatments the emphasis was on filling lines and wrinkles, I saw with interest as gradually we began to understand how our face ages and deflate with time. So the focus shifted to replacing lost volume. We moved from filling lines and wrinkles to adding volume. We also knew that in addition to loss of volume, gravity takes its toll and face begins to sag. We never thought
This Girl Can Swim campaign at North Walsham swimming pool
that using fillers could fight gravity-un till new research came out just now that shows it is possible. We now have evidence that using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers strengthens the deeper layer of the face. This firms up deeper tissue, which resists gravitational descent. We can say with confidence that use of our treatments can delay ageing”.
What are the risks? In general these are safe treatments when performed by reputable and experienced doctors. This area is however largely unregulated so choose wisely. Although there are many voluntary regulators, the only legitimate regulator of health care in England is Care Quality Commission so using a CQC registered clinic should guarantee minimum safeguards. Experience and results of your practitioner is the most important factor.

Twice weekly women-only sessions set to begin Swimming sessions for women only are being launched at Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham as part of the national This Girl Can campaign.
The campaign, developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations, is a celebration of active women. The womenonly sessions will soon be running twice a week at Victory, on Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons. They are designed for women of any age who want to exercise but may not usually take part in sport or exercise, feel self-conscious or are intimidated by ‘sporty’ environments.
Victory is run by Places for People Leisure and owned by North Norfolk District Council.
“This Girl Can Swim is about giving women low pressure opportunities to do more exercise,” said Cllr Becky Palmer, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing. “Exercise can be challenging for lots of people for many different reasons. This scheme, which has been very successful around the country, is about removing some of those challenges and opening doors which have perhaps previously been closed to some individuals. We want to celebrate women taking exercise, whatever their abilities. A trained activator will be on hand to greet participants at the sessions, will guide them through how to get the most out of the swim session and will be present throughout. “Victory will provide spotlessly clean changing rooms with a new high powered hair dryer and tea or coffee at the end for those that want to stay and socialise,” added Stuart Jardine, general manager at Victory Swim & Fitness Centre.
Sessions will be weekly on Fridays from 9am to 10am, starting on 15 April, and on Saturdays from 5pm to 6pm, starting on 7 May. Cost is £4.90 per session, although participants can bring a friend for free. Participants can wear swimsuits, fitted tee-shirts and lycra based leggings. Book your place on 01692 409370. STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis North Walsham to feature in all four cup finals All four Handicap Cup semi-finals have taken place starting with the Doubles as Gresham’s School A’s Haken Bennell, Seamus Chambers and Robin Thaxter hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Howard Lupton and John Vaughan. With two decisive 34-34 points split elsewhere, Chambers and Thaxter won their opening two battles, but lost out 35-33 as Beane and Lupton (+2) sealed NWSCA’s 5-2 win. The other semi-final saw NWSCB’s Paul Price, Joe Kirkup and Dennis Elliott win 5-0 away to Shark’s Steve Hudson, Steve Patterson and Chris Marshall. NWSCB won the five games 35-30, 35-29, 35-27, 35-28 and 35-26 (swap the third and fourth and there would have been some sort of pattern there!). In the Singles NWSCA won a semi-final derby 5-2 against NWSCB with Gresham’s School A beating Crosscourts in the other half of the draw. Hence the line-ups for all four Cup finals are now known with just three teams making it through this year to the showpiece matches – both the Knockout and Handicap Doubles finals will see NWSCA meet NWSCB while Gresham’s School A have made it to both Singles finals facing NWSCB in the Knockout
and NWSCA in the Handicap.
win for Elliott and Kirkup against Patterson and Hudson clinched NWSCB’s 6-4 win. Also in the division NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Terry Lawes hosted Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Keith Beswick and Terry Lawes winning 10-0.
At Cromer in the First Division, NWSCE’s Eric Dolden and Ben and James Lester won 10-0 away to Dropshots. After beating Sue Lawes in three and Sally Homfray-Davies in four, Ben Lester completed his maximum by recovering from 2-8 down in the decider to beat Alf Greer 11-9 with the doubles also going the distance. A night earlier Ben had joined the Phil’s Mole and Stone as NWSCD hosted Aylsham A’s Peter Ward, Dave Johns and Ian Potter in the Premier Division. Ward took a maximum including his second win from two down against Stone this season. Mole beat Potter in straight and picked up a set in both of his other battles. Stone beat Johns from a set down and Potter in an entertaining five-setter, but Aylsham A won the match 7-3. NWSCB hosted Sharks with the line-ups the same as in the Handicap. Patterson took a brace beating Elliott and Price in three and five respectively. A 14-12 first set helped Kirkup on his way to a win in four against Patterson but he was denied his maximum by Hudson who won in five. The Shark beat Price but lost to Elliott in two four-set affairs. An 11-9 in the fifth doubles
Back in the First Division, Mundesley A’s Paul Light, Peter Betts and Jonathan Care hosted NWSCC’s Richard Porritt, Paul Brown and Joel Lodge. Porritt took a brace for the visitors with two wins in three but lost out to maximum man Betts in three. Brown took a set from Care and went the distance with Light whose cracking forehands made the difference. The doubles saw Betts and Care edge Porritt and Brown 12-10 in the fifth. NWSCF finished their Second Division campaign ending up a respectable fifth after drawing with Mundesley C. The side also lost 9-1 to LCC Crabs which meant the Sheringham side ended up winning the division beating Mundesley B by a single point!
The Vikings' poor late season form continued as they concluded their League season with two home games.
Their 13 all draw with Old Priorians was a fairly drab affair, but the 29 -21 defeat by CS Rugby was a good advert for rugby at this level. They finished a respectable 6th in London North One, two places higher than last season.
The Club's second string, the Raiders, unbeaten since 3 October, crowned their successful season by winning their League and being promoted to Eastern Counties North Two.
There was plenty of success too in the Youth and Minis section. The Colts recently won the Eastern Counties Plate Cup defeating Colchester 26 -24 in a pulsating final, so emulating both the Under 16s and Under 13s who won Norfolk Cup competitions. On the second weekend in April the Minis (pictured) enjoyed their annual tour weekend. It began with a coaching session from past and present Vikings players and
