Charity Fun Day in Memory of Mark Hill Many readers will recognise our photo of Mark Hill. Sadly, Mark died last year aged just 55 years. His wife Jackie and son Nathan are organising a Charity Fun Day in his memory on Saturday 11 June 11am – 5pm at Greens Road in North Walsham.
Mark was a North Walsham boy all his life, son of Nigel and Daphne Hill. His great passion was football - for three consecutive years he ran the North Walsham Angels Football Team for ages 8 – 11 years, who Jackie says ‘became our football family’.
Mark was also a devoted Norwich City fan. He and Nathan went regularly to Carrow Road to cheer on The Yellows from the Jarrold stand, very special father and son times.
Mark worked at the RAF Coltishall and when the base closed, Mark became a self-employed gardener and also part-time

Jackie continues “this was a really special quality about Mark - he would always listen and help where and when he could and ultimately this is what this Fun Day is about. It was Nathan's idea, because when Mark was 50 we did a surprise football party at Greens Road where the Lads took on their Dads. It was a fabulous day and one we said we wished to repeat - but please without the air ambulance and a player with a broken leg! It is those same North Walsham lads that Mark trained as youngsters, who are playing for the North Walsham side in his memory - a wonderful tribute.

Charity Fun Day in Memory of Mark Hill
Continued from front cover... “Nathan had the idea and said let's celebrate Dad's life. Poor Mark's life was cut short on 28 September 2015 due to a pulmonary embolism he was only 55. He was a very fit and strong individual and this really shocked not only Nathan and I but the whole family to the core. So between us we decided to return to Greens Road and honour our two charities, which are both very dear to our hearts - British Heart Foundation (in memory of Nigel Hill - Mark's Dad) and also Cancer Research UK (in memory of Maurice Carey - my Dad) - Nathan's two grandads. It has given Nathan and I a purpose - hoping to help others at this very sad time in our lives and also to give a bit of sunshine in our lives.
“We would love to see as many people there as possible and having FUN!”
Attractions include North Walsham Students v Lincoln Students football match, Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Strawberries & Cream, Cakes, Teas and coffee, BBQ, Car Boot, Name the Teddy, Penalty Shoot Out, Various Crafts, Tombola, Raffle and Ice Creams. In the evening there will be a Charity Disco, dancing to Silverlight Disco, from 7,30pm at Rossi’s Leisure Centre (tickets £5 under 10s free_ and halfway through the disco there will be a charity auction of football memorabilia, including shirts, boots, goalie gloves, etc., from the Premier League down to lower leagues. Tickets for the disco are available from Jackie on 01692 403393.
Celebrations took place recently for the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge. The event, which was marked by a White Table event attended by over 80 members, friends and family, took place at St Giles in Norwich.
The Lodge was founded in 1966, and was closely linked to the Paston Grammar School, North Walsham. In recent years it has opened its membership to those with no previous connection to the school, which became Officers of the Old Pastonian Lodge at their a college in 1984 celebratory evening following the merger of the Paston Grammar School with the North Walsham Girls High School.
Steve Baker (pictured centre) is the current Master of the Lodge, and said that the event was notable for a number of reasons “My father was one of the founding members back in 1966, so to be able to mark the occasion was also a tribute to those involved in the forming of that lodge at that time. Having the celebration also provided an opportunity to reminds us of the role of freemasonry in the local community by enjoying historic ceremony, and engaging with local and national organisations and charities, to help those in need.”
Although one of Norfolk’s younger lodges, it is one of 76 in the county, the oldest having met continuously in Norwich since 1736.

Thursday 5 May was our annual lunch but with a change of venue. Skeyton Goat put on a wonderful meal with a choice of turkey or roast beef followed by a choice of sweet & then coffee. It was our first visit to this lovely old inn deep in the Norfolk countryside, with its lovely garden & play area. We would like to thank all the staff for serving us such a lovely lunch, It was a great afternoon out that our members really enjoyed.
The meeting on 7 April at the Community Centre was also enjoyed by members when confirmed favourites ‘The Squeegees’ sang a medley of songs from the 50s & 60s. This singing duo have now become a regular date in our yearly calendar and never let us down with their songs and jokes.

Hip hip hooray! Cheer on donkey due at party where supporters can join in the fun and special birthday party festivities, while their Adoption Star tucks into
As the country prepares to cheer on Sir Bradley Wiggins at this year’s Rio Olympics, visitors to Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s Aylsham Visitor Centre are also being invited to cheer on two special donkeys at their birthday party this summer.
Outgoing and mischievous Wiggins was named in honour of Sir Bradley Wiggins, having arrived at Redwings shortly after the athlete cycled to victory at the London Olympics in 2012. Poor Wiggins was taken in by the charity, which cares for 1,500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules at centres across the UK, after being discovered abandoned. At the same time, the owner of a donkey called Wacko contacted Redwings asking for urgent help in finding him a new home after the livery yard he had been living at closed down. The two lonely donkeys were brought together by Redwings and struck gold by finding friendship in each other.
The inseparable duo proved such a hit with visitors that they quickly joined the charity’s Adoption Club, which allows supporters to sponsor an Adoption Star resident for just £12.50 a year, with every penny going directly towards their daily care and that of their friends. Supporters can visit their Adoption Star for free during any open day at the centre where they live and receive updates on their four-legged friend’s progress. They are even invited to celebrate their new friend’s birthday with a
Wiggins and Wacko
a specially made cake, just for them!
Wiggins and Wacko, who can be adopted jointly, will be celebrating their 12th birthday with a party at Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, on Sunday 12 June at 11am.
Gemma Walpole, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising, said “Having been lonely for so long, Wiggins and Wacko have flourished into lovable and mischievous donkeys since finding friendship in each other. We hope as many people as possible will be able to come along and cheer them on, just like Wiggins’ namesake!”
And if partying with such a fun pair wasn’t enough, Redwings Aylsham’s other resident Adoption Stars will also be celebrating their birthdays this summer, including:
• Cheeky Miniature Shetland ponies The Gangsters on Sunday 24 July • Handsome thoroughbred cross horse Gulliver on Sunday 28 August
Redwings Aylsham also provides a safe and happy home to 50 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules who would love a cuddle too!
Wiggins and Wacko’s birthday party will take place on Sunday 12 June at 11am. Join in the celebrations at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham, Norfolk NR11 6UE. For more information about the Adoption Club or to sponsor a Redwings Adoption Star, visit www.redwings.org.uk/adopting

Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios
For two weeks every May/June, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates the county’s artists and their creativity by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell, and talk about their work. It gives visitors the chance to experience new art, meet artists, and to buy original artworks directly from their creators.
North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists (NOVA) was formed in 2000 as a liaison group between the Open Studios organisation and the artists of North Norfolk, thus it's title. Membership is continually rising and is currently in excess of 60 artists, covering most if not all mediums.
‘Middle of NovaWhere’ is a collective of artists from the North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists (NOVA). For 2016 they have set up a group exhibition as part of the Open Studios event, in the wonderful setting of Thorpe Market Church, to give visitors the chance to experience a diverse amount of talent in one location.
Often the artists have little space to show people around their own studios and as a solitary artist they find the two weeks of ‘NovaWhere’ Open Studios a great opportunity to be inspired by their co-exhibitors, or by the setting in which they show their work.
Artists exhibiting are David Cottrell, Lesley Ash, Susanne Lakin, John Rance, Leslie Hawkes Nockels, Shane (arTEEsane) and Chris Sharpe

The Museum of the Broads in June
Overstrand Open Gardens
We bring the story of the Broads alive with fun trails and activities for all the family. Follow the sounds of Broadland’s birds, discover quirky facts, and dress up in clothes and hats – whatever your age!
This is a chance to see over the wall and gates of the private gardens of village residents. And to add to the fun of the day there is a ‘Flower Pot Sculpture Trail’ that is sure to keep the children amused and indeed delight a few of the ‘grown-ups’.
With the longer and warmer days, what could be better than a picnic by the river at Stalham Staithe?
If you enjoy nostalgic window shopping, then our famous exhibition, ‘Broadland’s High Streets Through Time’, is for you. See how our high streets and shops have changed over the years, hear personal stories, and discover how self-sufficient our villages and towns really were.
We have a great range of events in June: • on Sunday 12 June our annual Steam Day celebrates all things steam from models, to cars, lorries, boats and our own steam boat, ‘Falcon’. • and treat your Dad on Father’s Day, 19 June. Bring him along to the Museum for free and he’ll enjoy a free trip on ‘Falcon’ too. • our Annual Art Challenge is on Sunday 26 June. Places are limited, so, for £10, including Museum entry, tuition, and a chance to win our prestigious trophy, book now!
Calling all gardeners – it’s a must do day on Sunday 19 June when the gardens of Overstrand will be open to the public.
The event is organised by Overstrand Together and brings the spotlight to gardens, large and small, all with their very own character and charm. Tickets and maps will be available from the Overstrand Sport Ground on the day. The Sports Club Bar will be open for refreshments with stalls on the edge of the Cricket Field selling plants and garden sundries.
If you live in Overstrand there is still a chance to enter your garden or create a potty sculpture and join in the fun. Entry is free and who knows you might be able to sell the odd plant from your garden. Entry details can be obtained by emailing drolph@uwclub.net
Get close and personal to riverside wildlife on board our steam boat, ‘Falcon’. She steams Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Phone or see our website for full details. Museum of the Broads, Stalham Staithe, NR12 9DA Open daily, 10am to 4pm www.museumofthebroads.org.uk, 01692 581681
North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust
The fourth annual Open Days event will be held at Ebridge Mill Pond, Happisburgh Road, North Walsham, NR28 9NH on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June between 11am and 5pm each day by kind permission of the owner, The Old Canal Co.
Do come along and see exhibits of its history, old and new photographs and please bring along your treasured memories of the canal to share with the people actively working hard to bring this piece of our industrial heritage back to life again!
The Canoe-man of Wroxham will be there to tempt you to take to the water and paddle up as far as Spa Common. There may also be a couple of other boats present as well as the Ebridge Model Boating Club. Our new Wildlife Officer will make a presentation of his many, many finds showing how the restoration so far has had a major and undeniably beneficial effect on our natural inhabitants on the land, in the water and in the air.
A raffle will be held, including hand-made quilts, plus tombola, refreshments, ice cream, bric-a-brac and plenty of information available for you to make it a great day out beside and on your only locked Norfolk canal. North Walsham Times 496 June 4th 2016

We had a great weekend at the annual Crab and Lobster Festival in May; two of our top chefs Lewis and Simon put on some excellent demonstrations using some of the finest seafood in the world to packed audiences. We are so lucky to have such incredible fresh ingredients on our doorstep and a big thank you to John Davies and the whole Festival team for putting on a wonderful event. Roll on next year!
This gnocchi wasn’t on our demonstration stall but it is a really tasty, slightly unusual dish to prepare and enjoy (perhaps with something chilled and dry…!) as you sit out in the garden this summer. Alternatively, put the cooking to one side and come and see us for dinner; 6 – 9pm every evening!

Payment of a brother’s private school fees held to be in ‘best interests’ of his sister Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
In the case of David Ross v A [2015] a girl (called ‘A’ in the case) had been brain-damaged after birth as a result of medical negligence. The parents settled for an award of £5 million. A professional person was appointed by the Court of Protection (‘the Court’) to manage A’s finances (known as the ‘Deputy’ – ‘D’). He spoke warmly of the excellent care that A’s parents gave her at home. D approved various payments out of A’s award, including the costs of adapting the family home. D thought that external care packages would have been much more expensive and much less good.
A’s brother (‘B’) inevitably suffered as a result of his sister’s condition and had problems at his primary school and failed to get a place at the selective state senior school of his choice. B was described as having great potential to achieve with the right education.
D, at the request of the family, made an application to the Court to authorise the payment of private school fees for B out of A’s award. The application was lost in the Court system for nearly 2 years and, in that intervening period, D paid B’s school fees out of A’s fund, in the hope that the Court would retrospectively authorise the expenditure.
The Official Solicitor (“OS”) was appointed to represent A’s interests and opposed the application. He claimed repayment of the
Electrician
school fees that had already been paid.
The OS argued that A had never assumed the financial responsibility and was not responsible for causing harm to her brother, as a result of her condition. The OS argued that D had to represent the interests of A only, and not B’s and the wider family.
Senior Judge Lush allowed D’s application for the payment of B’s school fees and castigated the OS for his “unnecessary intrusive and hostile approach”. Judge Lush criticised the “microscopic scrutiny” by OS of D’s expenditure and the OS’s condemnation of the family’s dependence on the award. Judge Lush said that the family were dependent on A’s award in the same way as A was dependent upon her family for care and said that “it was insensitive and demeaning to stigmatise them for deciding to sacrifice their own careers and earning-potential by staying at home and caring for their profoundly disabled child on a full-time basis.”
Judge Lush noted a range of factors. These included that the family were living well within the awarded sum, which had in fact grown in size. It would continue to be sustainable, even with the payment of school fees. Mutual dependency was inevitable and B’s needs were important. If the parents went back to work and paid for external carers it would

A’s ‘best interests’ (as defined by the Mental Capacity Act) were difficult to determine, but the views of the parents and D were considered important. However, the case is not a precedent for the payment of school fees in similar situations.

Norfolk Dealer Raises £12,000 for ParalympicsGB
A North Norfolk Nissan dealership has raised more than £12,000 for the British Paralympic Association in support of the carmaker’s role as Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB. Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Holt, generated the cash through a series of fundraisers helping to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s assault on the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

A new service from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
First, staff, friends and customers of the dealership cycled, swam and ran almost 12,000 miles – the distance from North Norfolk to Rio and back – raising almost £6,000. They also completed a six-and-a-half hour cross trainer marathon at a nearby supermarket in Cromer.
www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk
Then, on Saturday evening, a black tie charity dinner and auction at the Links Hotel, West Runton, gave the coffers a further boost, taking the grand total beyond the £10,000 mark.
The charity dinner featured an inspiring talk by Duncan Slater an injured ex-serviceman who walked to the South Pole with Prince Harry and had just returned from running six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert for the charity Walking With the Wounded. The Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, Colonel Jamie Athill Rtd, also attended and gave the introductory speech.
Guests at the dinner were also thanked for their support in video messages recorded by two-time Paralympian and Nissan ambassador, Stef Reid, and James Wright, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB).
In her message, Stef Reid, a silver medallist in the long jump at London 2012, said “Thanks to all of you and to Crayford and Abbs for your fundraising efforts, which are amazing. Obviously money isn’t everything but it’s super important in our sport for performance and it feels really awesome to know that you guys are behind us and encouraging us the whole way. So thank you.”
James Wright added “The total raised by the dealership is magnificent and will make a massive difference to ParalympicsGB’s athletes as they prepare for Rio 2016. Raising this amount is an incredible achievement and my thanks go to everyone at Crayford and Abbs for the efforts they have gone to.”
Speaking after the dinner, Kevin Abbs, Managing Director at Crayford and Abbs, said “We’re very proud of what we achieved and we’re all massively looking forward to Rio 2016 and being able to cheer on our athletes knowing we’ve played a small part in their success.”

Rosehip Cottage Herbs: Herbalism and Nutrition
It was thirteen years ago when I had a business in North Walsham, a Holistic shop which I ran for over four years and then sold up when I was expecting my second child. I am Janeeta Carlos-Lawrence.
I completed my Nutrition course last year (and am currently studying Iridology). I can use it alongside my Herbalism qualification and work around my childrens' school day to build a good work/home balance.
I have always been interested in the flora and fauna all around us. I got my first book about medicinal herbs when I was just 10 years old which I still have and use. I became even more interested in herbs and their healing properties when I attended a workshop at the College of Phytotherapy, East Sussex in 1998 – it opened up a whole new avenue to how I wanted herbal medicine to be a bigger part of my everyday life.

Many of the complex molecules found in plants are very similar or even identical to those in our bodies. By providing a whole plant extract, we give our body the chance to choose what it needs. Our nutritional needs are as individual as our fingerprints and so good diet is the indispensable bedrock of all preventive and corrective medicine.
Among their many assets, herbs are foods in themselves and serve to supplement and assist other things that are being ingested – good nutritious food is the cornerstone of any healing programme.
I hope to help people to take responsibility for their own health care, appreciating, evaluating and treasuring their bodies – to be and feel happy and healthy.

The weather kept fine and all the children managed to walk approximately two miles, looking and counting mini-beasts as they went. The walk was further enhanced by the children limbing an old oak tree and swinging on a rope swing and

This year’s North Walsham Festival, organised by Arts North Norfolk, will run 18 to 26 June. It is the town’s second Festival, and this year will mark the town’s links with the 1381 Revolt and Battle of North Walsham.
Last year’s North Walsham Festival was a great success, engaging with 8,700 as audience members, artists, performers and participants. There is even more ways for people to get involved this year - from free workshops to get ready for the Festival Parade, the Battle Project (recreating the 1381 Battle using dance), North Walsham Knits, the Festival Open Art Exhibition and lots of work with local schools.
Joseph Ballard, Festival director said “A town Festival should be shaped, delivered and animated by its community and it’s only as strong as the people who support it. We’re helping develop the sense of community here in North Walsham even further with profiling the Festival, making the town an exciting place with innovative events and attractions to make everybody – residents and visitors alike – very proud.”
This year sees some new Festival events, like the lunchtime recital series in St Nicholas Parish Church. From harp, piano and flute there is a nice bit of variety with the informal concerts, and audiences are invited to come along, bring their sandwiches and enjoy their lunchbreak!
A new play The Good, the Bad and the Revolting will be premiered, which is a piece of free street theatre for all ages, which will start at the Market Cross and then lead the audience around to different town centre locations. The play will embrace some folk, elements of a Mummers Play, song and puppetry. There will also be some contemporary references as we explore the cognate elements of the people versus the state, which will be even more relevant being performed the week of the EU Referendum.
The Mynx Soul Band will headline the Festival Tent in the evening of Saturday 25 June and the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association will be camped in the park all weekend too, with free demos and activities representing medieval life. Lighter fun is also on offer, with Sing-Along Mamma Mia at the Atrium Theatre on the Friday night and the farcical comedy, Kindly Leave the Stage, presented by Baroque Theatre Company on Saturday 18 June also at the Atrium Theatre.
Joseph continued “Sometimes I’m hesitant in promising something for all
16
ages, but this year’s Festival holds to it. I hope the town will continue to support the Festival. I’m very proud that we can offer over 25 free events in just 8 days and it’s a great way for the town to come together for the biggest event of the year!”
The Festival HQ, at No. 1 Market Place has lots of brochures and posters at the ready. The local community are welcome to come and pick some up and help distribute them in workplaces, to neighbours, clubs and schools. For more information about the Festival and for other events, check out www.artsnorthnorfolk.org, call 01692 218060 or pop into No. 1 Market Place, North Walsham (open Wednesday to Saturday).
The North Walsham Festival is supported by Arts Council England, as part of Arts North Norfolk’s Inspiring Our Town project.
North Walsham Festival 2016 highlights :
The Festival Parade is on 26 June – it is free to take part and you can sign up at No. 1 or on the Festival website.
The Battle - this is your chance to take part in the recreation of the Battle of North Walsham of 1381. We are doing it differently, working with Glasshouse Dance. All abilities especially beginners and those who have not thought of doing something like this before - are welcome!
North Walsham Knits - Can you knit, sew or crochet? Or would you like to learn? We are asking everyone to donate hand-crafted pieces for a special Festival project. We are not after clothing as we’ll be using the bits as decoration, but garlands and long lengths would be great! Keep a look out during the Festival week to see how it all comes together!
Volunteer for Arts North Norfolk - Perhaps you would like to get involved in a different way? Behind the scenes, front of house as an usher or help with the Parade route as a steward on the day.

Walking in the air for Cromer charity
About With Friends member Peter White doesn’t let his disability stop him from reaching for the sky and so on 29 June he will be walking in the air to raise money for the Cromer based charity.
Peter is going to do a Wingwalk in the skies over Gloucestershire when he will be strapped standing to the top wing of a biplane flown by an experienced member of The Flying Circus Aerosuperbatics team.
Peter, who works in the About With Friends’ Community Shop in Garden Street, Cromer every Tuesday and Thursday had already done parachute jumps to raise money for other charities and he decided he would like to help
18
raise money towards a new minibus for the organisation which is well known in Norfolk.
As well as laying on a busy programme of social activities for children and adults, the charity also has a popular Workskills programme where more than 50 adults with a learning disability come to work on one or more days each week. This might be in the Community Café in Tucker Street, in the Catering or Gardening teams or in the Community team that provides lunch clubs for the over 55s and visits residents in Halsey House. Some members also make craft items and woodwork products, which are sold in the Community shop where Peter works.
The charity’s big red minibus has been a regular
sight across Norfolk (and as far afield as Belgium) for the past 8 years and is desperately in need of replacement. Peter’s brave Wingwalk will help raise a lot of money towards the new bus.
You can support Peter by sponsoring him at his MyDonate page mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/peterwingwalk

Can you Find Room in your Heart and Home to Foster or Adopt greyhound until he/she goes to their adopted family. It's also a good way to an Unwanted Greyhound? see whether you enjoy the company of a greyhound. Norfolk Greyhound Rescue are appealing for people to adopt unwanted racing greyhounds and are particularly seeking those wonderful souls who feel able to offer foster homes to these gentle creatures.
Their aim is to transport greyhounds from Ireland, where many of these hounds are bred. Whether they have raced or not, many end up unwanted and at serious risk. Unlike some charities, NGR pride themselves on the fact that everything is volunteer-led and nobody in the organisation takes payment for their efforts. They genuinely do it for our love of the hounds! NGR is also happy to be hosting the Cromer ‘leg’ of the Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday 19 June, starting at Runton Rd Car Park at 10.30am and walking the Promenade and Pier. This event takes place all over the UK and also abroad, when thousands of greyhounds are walked to raise awareness of greyhounds as lovely pets. See www.greatglobalgreyhoundwalk.co.uk for full details. Officially this walk is for Greyhounds and other Sighthounds only.
Happily, the message is gradually getting across about what lovely pets greyhounds make. Generally they are gentle, quiet and lazy pets, requiring much less exercise than you would think. They prefer sleeping to anything else, except perhaps for treats. They have occasional crazy, kooky moments where they show what clowns they can be! This combination is usually enough to steal the heart of any dogloving human.

Please pick up your dog’s waste – message from school children ‘Poosters’ formally unveiled at North Norfolk schools
Young people across North Norfolk have been turning their hand to designing posters urging people to clean up after their dogs. The ‘dog poosters’ have been created by children at Little Snoring Primary, Neatishead Primary, North Walsham Junior, Millfield Primary in North Walsham and Sheringham Primary.
They highlight the dangers of disease spread by dog fouling, encourage people to bag and bin their dog’s mess and point out the law governing the clearing up of dog waste. The work has been turned into small posters to be put up around schools, larger A2 boards to be put up in the vicinity of schools and signage for some of the district’s bin collection lorries. Each school produced three winning designs. From those 15 designs, three were chosen to create the lorry signage.
Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “The majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, but there are some owners still acting in an irresponsible way, leaving their dog’s waste as a health risk and nuisance to others. “We hope these wonderful posters made by young people who care about their local communities encourage those irresponsible dog owners to bag up their pet’s mess and put it in a bin.” Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Services visited schools last month to present winners with a professionally printed version of their poster.

Lasting Powers of Attorney
You may be aware of the importance of making a Will, but have you ever stopped to wonder what would happen if you became unable or incapable of dealing with your affairs?
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which allows you to appoint someone that you trust as an ‘attorney’ to make decisions on your behalf. This is often a spouse or a son or daughter over the age of 18. Attorneys can make decisions for you when you no longer wish to, or when you lack the mental capacity to do so. Who would you choose to look after your affairs if you were no longer able to do so?
There are two different types of Lasting Power of Attorney Property and financial decisions Health and welfare decisions *******************************
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY
If you are no longer able to look after your affairs then a special court called “The Court of Protection - Office of the Public Guardian” will supervise the control of your affairs. In many cases this could result in large legal bills often on an annual basis.
We are offering a SPECIAL 15% discount on the normal £99 fee, but only by presenting this voucher

North Walsham and District Historical Society Meet Sir William Paston Bart - presented by Dr Rob Nee (in costume as Sir William)
The story of Sir William Paston Bart, the richest man in North Walsham, is one of a family who wrote letters that survive to this day. The first Paston of note was Clement Paston, a ploughman who married Beatress Sommerton, whose wealthy father funded the education of their son William Paston, 1378 – 1444. He was sent to the Inns of London to study law and had a practice which included several prominent persons. He owned land at Cromer and his wife also owned lots of land in North Norfolk.
John Paston I 1421 – 1466 married Margaret Mautby, who also owned much land in Norfolk. They had a son William who was diagnosed mentally ill. John and Margaret’s second son,
Sir John Paston’s II and Sir William Paston IV, both of whom received financial settlements, coincidentally also both had sons who were diagnosed mentally ill (the Paston curse). Next in line was Sir William Paston IV who married Briget Heydon. Their son Edward (Admiral Clement) married the widow of the Sheriff of London, who owned several properties in Norfolk and also made a fortune from the bounty from seized ships.
Sir Erasmus Paston married Margaret Windham and added to the family fortunes by her inheritance. William Paston 1528 - 1610 married Frances Clere whose inheritance and land also came to the family. They built the Great Barn. He was knighted after supplying troops for the King, becoming Sir William in 1578. After the devastating fire in the town of North
Walsham, he was able to purchase a plot of land on which he built and founded the Paston (Grammar) School in 1606. Sir William’s tomb lies in the church of St Nicholas in North Walsham and his effigy is carved in alabaster with his coat of arms and epitaph.
Their son Christopher Paston 1554 married Anne Audley and she also brought inherited wealth to the family. Christopher was officially classified an idiot and was unable to inherit his father’s estates in 1610.
The inheritance then passed to Sir Edmund Paston 1581 who married Katherine Knyvett. She also increased the family’s wealth by her inheritance. Sir Edmond became Earl of Yarmouth in 1641. He was a royalist and escaped to Holland during the Civil War.
The next meeting is on 7 July with a talk entitled ‘Life behind the front with women at war’. Mike Sothcott

“As volunteers we have the opportunity to work in a beautiful walled garden, Victorian greenhouse and poly tunnel. We see the whole satisfying process from sowing, to planting, to cropping – of course we have to deal with a few weeds on the way!
Volunteering at Holt Hall isn’t all about work either – we enjoy each other’s company, have lots of laughs and also meet visitors and chat about the garden and Hall on Open Days.” – written by some of the Holt Hall volunteers who work in the garden on Mondays.

Our Open Days help to raise money for a Bursary Fund, which supports Norfolk children on residential visits to Holt Hall.

Brand New Rock & Soul Choir started in North Walsham
If you love singing, you’ll love this! Invidia Voices - Rock & Soul Choir have a brand new rehearsal group right here in North Walsham. Rehearsing every Monday evening at the Atrium, the group is led by local singer, vocal coach and Brittish Blues Awards Nominee, Charlotte Joyce who invites singers of all abilities to come down and give it a go. Founded in 2013 by husband and wife team Matt and Alex Emmerson, Invidia Voices has fast become one of Norfolk’s largest vocal groups growing to over 300 members in just a few years. With rehearsal groups available in North Walsham, Norwich, Acle, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham and now West Runton, Invidia owes its popularity to it’s fun and easy going approach to singing, but Matt says “the best thing about this choir is our members. I’ve never met such a lovely, friendly and supportive bunch of people!
He went on to explain “There's no audition required and no need for any musical background, just a love of singing. We’re so lucky to have Charlotte on board as her experience and enthusiasm makes rehearsals not just fun but an opportunity to develop your voice and improve your singing. Uplifting, fun and incredibly social, Invidia Voices is a non-religious singing group whose aim is simply to smile, laugh and sing with like minded people. And who knows, you might discover that you’re not a bad singer after all!
To find out more about groups in your area or upcoming workshops, visit www.invidiavoices.co.uk or call 01603 464532.

Cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats for Help the Heroes James Daintree from Aylmerton is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Help for Heroes.
James served in the Royal Navy for over 10 years and spent most of his time on board the HMS Gloucester but also served alongside the Royal Marines at RNAS Yeovilton. During his service, he completed tours in various countries including the Falklands, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan.
His brother served in the RAF and both his parents and uncle in the Army. Having experienced war zones and their effect on people first hand, James chose to support the charity Help for Heroes for his cycle ride.
He will start from Land’s End on 30 August and finish in John O’Groats on 11 September covering a distance of approximately 1000 miles over 12 days. He has been training for the event for about a year and has lost around four stone in weight!
Prior to the event, James will be aiming to cycle 200 miles on his trainer at Morrisons in Cromer on 9 July and would be grateful for any donations in his bucket so please do look out for him.

New Mayor and Deputy Mayor
North Walsham’s new Town Mayor is Barry Hester and Deputy Mayor is Sallie Stuckey.
They were both elected at last month’s Annual Meeting of North Walsham Town Council.
Laser treatment of excessive underarm sweating Until now, there were very few long-term solutions for treating excessive underarm sweating.
Surgical treatments include removal of sweat glands, which could be associated with complications. Any surgery can be associated with prolonged recovery time and issues with healing and scarring. Other treatment operations involve interrupting major nerves inside the thorax. This operation was often associated with unacceptable complications, and is rarely performed.
Now there is a minimally invasive quick solution for long-term reduction of excessive underarm sweating. Lasers have revolutionized all areas of medicine and surgery. Now we have a minimally invasive laser procedure, to selectively destroy the sweat glands without requiring incisions.
KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk
So how is laser sweat reduction performed? This is performed purely under a local anaesthetic. A special test is used to delineate and mark the overactive sweat glands. A solution of anaesthetic is used to numb the areas of excessive sweating. When the area has been numbed up, a tiny laser fiber is introduced under the skin and the laser is activated. The laser energy destroys the sweat glands without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues. In some cases, a tiny hollow tube is introduced and the destroyed sweat glands are easily sucked out. The procedure only takes about one hour.
What is the recovery like? Most patients are back to normal within 48 hours. There can be a minor degree of swelling and discomfort. Generally, the procedure is very well tolerated with reduction in sweating of up to 70 to 80%. Patients who had the procedure comment that first time in years they have been able to wear T-shirts without having to change them regularly.

‘Lots’ of Promises to Keep Walking
There is a great chance to bid for all sorts of items on offer at the North Norfolk Fit Together Auction of Promises at Gresham Village Hall on the evening of 4 June, 6.30pm registration for a 7pm start.
Businesses and individuals from all over north Norfolk have contributed, from a sponge cake you can secretly enjoy on your own through to afternoon tea on the terrace of the House of Commons with local MP Norman Lamb. Afternoon out at various venues, vouchers from local supermarkets, a day trip on the Broads and brewery tours are all amongst the lots in the catalogue. Top photographer David Morris has contributed a signed print, which would grace the wall of any home or business. Chairman John Tomlinson and Walks Co-Ordinator Mel Brown show off the picture in our photo.
Fit Together is a registered charity that grew out of the Active Norfolk programme, once reliant on funding from District and County Councils but now responsible for its own fund-raising. Regular and supported health walks across the region are the most popular part of the programme. Also offered are other physical activities aimed at improving health including tea dances, circuit training for the older person, badminton and line dancing. However, for the auction you will
The Vikings' resounding victories in the Norfolk Cup confirmed their status as the County's leading club but could not mask a disappointing run of results since the turn of the year. In the first half of the season, they won ten out of thirteen, in the second four, to finish seventh in London Division One North. Amersham & Chiltern were the League's winners pipping Tring to promotion. Barking, Harrow and Luton were relegated.
Ethan Benney (pictured) was April's Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. The winger/full back played in all the Vikings' games except one in this his first season at Scottow. "His rate of improvement increased as the season progressed so he is now a very potent attacker" said Coach Nick Greenhall.
"He has worked hard at his speed, agility and stepping. He communicates well too, organising the back three."
Ethan, who is from Whangarei on the northern tip of New Zealand, said "my whole family, especially my grandfather Les Donaldson, is rugby mad and follow the Vikings' games closely. I'm loving working and playing here and signed up for next season months ago. I've felt at home ever since I arrived with the players, club officials and supporters all so welcoming."
be able to be reasonably sedentary – though hopefully with a lot of raising of the arm to indicate you would like to bid for one of the promises!
Norwich City
End of Season Roundup
by Joel Lodge
Norwich City endured a season of what could have been. They missed out on plenty of opportunities to gain points throughout the season and have ultimately come up short, finishing in 19th place along with Aston Villa and Newcastle.
There were a few games in particular that had large contributions in Norwich’s downfall - the first of which being a 6-2 loss against Newcastle away in mid-October.
I believe this was pivotal as it was our first major loss of the season in terms of the amount of goals we conceded.
I believe this really psychologically damaged the teams spirit going into the rest of the season. Another key game that contributed to the relegation of Norwich was in late January when they fell to a 5-4 loss at home to Liverpool, I feel as though this game was the one that changed the season of Norwich the most, this was due to the weird nature of the game and how intense it felt throughout. Norwich were 3-1 up by the 54th minute and allowed Liverpool to lead through conceding three goals in the space of 20 minutes. Everyone thought that Norwich had salvaged a point after Bassong scored a wonderful goal in stoppage time, to eventually have all their work undone by Lallana crushing the hearts of 25,000 plus fans inside Carrow Road. I feel that this result demoralised Norwich so much as it came at a point where Norwich could have and should have picked up three points after a poor run of games.
Overall Norwich could not handle with the quality of the Premier League due to still having a very similar squad to the one that was previously relegated in 2014. This is why Norwich City needs to have a summer of transition and an overhaul in the boardroom as well as with the playing staff. Norwich have already made progress by sacking David McNally and they need to stop being sentimental with players if they want to progress as a club and turn into a secure and stable Premier League side rather than being a yo-yo club.

North Walsham Table Tennis NWCSCA Win Handicap Doubles Cup
The NWSCA team of Andy Beane (12), Tom Baldock-Yaxley (2) and Howard Lupton (0) battled out the Handicap Doubles Cup final against the NWSCB trio of Dennis Elliott (13), Paul Price (8) and Joe Kirkup (10). Despite some good serving from NWSCB, NWSCA were ultimately the more consistent as they took a 4-1 lead. It looked as though the final would be all over in the sixth battle as Baldock-Yaxley and Lupton won the first three points and levelled at 13-13 against Elliott and Price (+9), however after mis-firing earlier in the night Price’s backhand was back on song in this one and combined with some clever shot-making from Elliott, it gave NWSCB a chance as they won seven straight points from 25-30. Soon NWSCB had three match-points at 34-32 (two normal chances followed by the sudden death shoot-out that is the 34-34 golden point). The two normal chances were saved by BaldockYaxley – the first with the serve and the second with a forehand winner that ended one of the best points of the night. That meant NWSCB’s third match-point at 34-34 also just happened to be Cup point to NWSCA but Price took his chance with a glorious backhand winner to continue the contest. The comeback seemed to give NWSCB a new lease of life as Price and Kirkup (+2) took a 9-2 lead in the seventh battle only for Beane and Baldock-Yaxley to win the next seven points. Good counter-hitting and great angles from Beane combined with powerful forehands from Baldock-Yaxley as NWSCA moved 30-20 ahead. NWSCB again

started to get back into the contest as they took the next six points but this time it was not to be as a return winner from Beane on NWSCA’s first match-point and second Cup point of the night sealed their 5-2 win.
The same NWSCA trio also featured in the Handicap Singles Cup final where this time they faced the Gresham’s School A team of Robin Thaxter (0), Haken Bennell (1) and Hubert Cheng (0). Thaxter (+0) won an enthralling tactical contest against Lupton 35-27. Next Beane (+11) was unsettled by the serve of Bennell early on and then later unforced errors cost the NWSCA player from 32-32 as Bennell took the last three points. Next Cheng seemed able at times to hit winners at will, but he also added good change of pace at critical moments as he won a fast and furious battle that was a joy to watch against Baldock-Yaxley (+2) 35-30. Thaxter then had all the answers against Beane (+12) as Gresham’s moved 4-0 ahead.
tent enough against a solid opponent as Lupton’s 35-22 win kept NWSCA in the contest. Baldock-Yaxley (+1) started against Bennell by giving his opponent a taste of his own medicine with three unreturned serves. This was another of those battles you simply could not take your eyes off and was close throughout with the players level at 8-8, 16-16, 23-23 and 28-28. Baldock-Yaxley had three match-points at 34-31 plus another on the sudden death point, but Bennell saved the first three to force the golden point that would also be Cup point to Gresham’s. On the critical 34-34 point, Bennell’s serve looked to have done the early damage only for Baldock-Yaxley to get back in the rally – however twenty strokes later Bennell hit a forehand winner to seal Gresham’s 5-1 win. NWSCA still had unfinished business as they returned to Trunch Village Hall in the last League fixture of the season that had been put on hold by the finals, where they beat Sharks 9-1.
The next battle started on evens and some vintage play from Lupton saw him win four straight points from 7-7 and good variations and lovely forehands kept Cheng at bay in the first half as he led 17-12 at POOL 1 POOL 2 change of ends.
