CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS

This term, children from five primary schools in North Norfolk have been taking part in an exciting and ambitious music, art and poetry project based around the orchestral work ‘Carnival of the Animals’ by Camille SaintSaens.

On 13 July at 12.30pm the musicians from ‘Parnassus’, led by the internationally renowned conductor Peter Stark, will give a concert featuring ‘Carnival of the Animals’ at St Andrew’s Church, Holt, which up to fifty children from each of five partner primary schools - Holt, Gresham Village, Langham, Overstrand and Roughton - will be attending. There will also be a public performance at 6.30pm that evening.

During the first half of the summer term, children took part in art, music and poetry workshops, based on the animal theme, to inspire and add to the musical experience. These workshops have stimulated adventurous and imaginative ideas for the related art and poetry competitions.

The resulting art work will be exhibited in three local libraries - Cromer, Holt and Sheringham from 6-20 July and in St Andrew’s Church, Holt, from 2328 July as part of the Holt Festival.

Animals project is being organised and part-funded by FALCON, with generous funding from the Arts Council of England and the Norfolk Arts Fund. It is being run in partnership with Holt Festival (who are funding the school’s concert), and is made possible by support of the five partner primary schools, as well as the Norfolk Library Service and the Rector of St Andrew’s Church, Holt.

On the final day of the exhibition at St Andrew’s Church in Holt, on Thursday 28 July at 6.30pm there will be a Celebratory Event, during which a Improvements at Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and Gimingham selection of the village hall. A BSF grant of £8,000 was awarded to be used towards the costs of removing the existing tin shed, upgrading the existing timber building and construction of a 5m x 10m timber extension to double the size of the current table tennis building. The Club match funded the project. Chairman Nick Amis thanked North Norfolk District Council at the opening event, saying the project could not have gone ahead without the grant. Tom FitzPatrick, leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Grants Panel, cut the ribbon on the extension and said “This type of project encourages healthy physical activity for all ages and we were delighted to be able to help with the funding.”

On 21 May, improvements to Gimingham village hall were unveiled, including replacement of the front doors, 100 new steel framed stacking chairs with fabric padded seats and an upgraded kitchen. A BSF grant of £5,000 was agreed last September to go towards the work. North Norfolk District councillor Sue Arnold attended the event and said “The village hall, along with the church, is pivotal to the life of this community. “That community has come together to raise funds for the modernisation and it was very evident at the launch how positive this project has been for the people involved.” Since the BSF started in 2012, NNDC has awarded over £1,170,000 to 147 community projects that are meeting local need and making a real difference to communities in North Norfolk.

£1m fund helps local volunteer learn lifesaving skills

A new volunteer crew member at Happisburgh RNLI lifeboat station has had a vital part of their crew training funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Martin, who was inspired to join up as a volunteer crew member because he wanted to help his community, has since put his knowledge to good use in part of the ongoing training at Happisburgh Station. He now feels more equipped to carry out his role as part of the team.

Martin Gibbs, from Happisburgh, recently travelled to RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, to complete the charity’s Trainee Crew Course.

A key part of the course is the sea survival element, which enables new volunteer crew to be trained in a variety of crucial subjects including how to ‘abandon ship’ with a 4m jump into water, team survival swimming, coping in a life raft in simulated darkness, how to deal with fires aboard lifeboats, how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat and the importance of lifejackets.

Training took place in the Sea Survival Centre at the charity’s college, which includes a 25m wave-generating survival tank, allowing trainees to experience first-hand some of the scenarios they may encounter at sea should they ever need to abandon their lifeboat.

The training was funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LR Foundation), a UK registered charity that connects science, safety and

Martin Gibbs

society by supporting quality research and promoting skills and education. The Foundation is funding the Sea Survival element of RNLI’s Trainee Crew Courses for a further 5 year period from January 2016 to December 2020. This additional funding of £1.06m will bring their total support for RNLI crew training to just over £2.46m.

Talking about the training, Martin, who volunteers as a crew member, said ‘The training was very good, hard work, training with crews from all over the country gave us an idea of how other stations work. The training will stand me in good stead to be a valuable part of the team at Happisburgh’.

North Walsham Times 497 June 25th 2016

RNLI Training Coordinator Cubitt Siely at Happisburgh said ‘The support given by LR Foundation is hugely important to the RNLI. We are extremely grateful that the Foundation has chosen to continue to fund sea survival training, which teaches vital core skills to our volunteer crew. This training is vital to help keep volunteers as safe as possible while on rescue missions. It equips volunteers with essential sea survival skills; providing them with the courage, poise and self-confidence to save lives even in the most perilous seas.’

This donation is just the latest in LR Foundation’s relationship with the RNLI, which was recognised in 2010 when it received the Group Supporter Award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent in recognition of its valuable support of the charity.

Cromer Pier Show 2016 39 years of First Class Variety

From one of the UK’s most Famous Pier Theatres Bringing Audiences Talent from Norfolk to Australia Back for another recording breaking year, Cromer Pier Show is now the only ‘End-of-the-Pier’ show in the world and, if advance bookings are anything to go by, this year will see a high demand for tickets.

Headlining this year’s show is comedian Phil Butler, who last appeared in 1998 and 1999. Phil is truly a comedy act like no other, using his razor sharp wit to inject his hilarious take on entertainment. His stage skills include magic, juggling and ventriloquism which, added to his wealth of experience, has made Phil a hit at both mainstream and alternative venues.

Joining Phil is Australia’s favourite comedy juggler, James BuSTAR. James appeared on Australia’s Got Talent and is now a headline act at performances and festivals across the globe.

Making her first ever appearance at the Pavilion Theatre is Marea Smithson, a comedy impressionist from Norfolk. She has been impersonating people for as long as she can remember and began performing on stage at around the age of eighteen, after the girls at work (in the wage office at Rowntree Mackintosh) encouraged

her to enter the ‘Search for a Star’ talent contest at The Talk of The East in Norwich. Marea’s usual place of work is at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, as a secretary in the radiology department, where she has worked for the past 25 years and, although she enjoys it, the chance of doing a summer season in Cromer was so different and exciting Marea could not say no. The Norfolk and Norwich has kindly allowed Marea to take a sabbatical so she can to take part in The Cromer Pier Show, a challenge that she is really looking forward to.

be here for the summer.

Lead Vocalist Rob McVeigh makes a welcome return to Cromer after his performances in The Cromer Pier Show in 2011 and 2012. For female Lead Vocalist Emily Yarrow, this will be her very first visit to Cromer and she is delighted to

No variety show would be complete without its dancers and The Cromer Pier Show is no exception. The Seaside Special Dancers will be working as hard as ever and displaying their talents in all forms of dance from tap to ballet. Add to this fabulous mix of talent, colourful costumes, stunning sets, lights and music, and you have a show to remember – The FAMOUS Cromer Pier Show.

North Walsham Times 497 June 25th 2016

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT …

Following their successful production of the popular comedy 'Outside Edge' in January this year, North Norfolk-based amateur dramatic group Stage Direct's next production, 'The Thrill of Love' dramatises the story of the last woman to be hanged in Britain in 1955, and takes a new look at her final days.

When Ruth Ellis, a nightclub hostess meets wealthy, womanising David Blakely, the attraction is violent and ultimately, deadly. But why, when their relationship ends in murder, does she plead not guilty but offer no defence. Who is she protecting and who gave her the gun?

'The Thrill of Love' is a piece of modern criminal history, and although it was 1965 before hanging was finally abolished for murder, there is little doubt that the Ruth Ellis case raised questions as to whether hanging was an acceptable punishment for anyone in the 20th Century

Performances are at Aylsham High School, 22 and 23 July at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 are available from ticketsource.co.uk or at the door on the night.

The legal consequences of dementia

By Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department There may be a time when you can no longer share of communicate what you think, or you cannot make decision over your finances or legal affairs. This may be due to the development of a medical condition such as dementia. If you are affected by dementia you will need to consider the legal and financial implications for you and your family.

The Legal consequences of dementia When you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with dementia you should consider whether two legal documents are in place – a Will and a Lasting (LPA) Power of Attorney (LPA).

Why is a Will important? Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions and choose who they go to. Wills can be put in place using Trusts to protect your property and to ensure beneficiaries in receipt of means-tested benefits don’t lose their entitlements through an inheritance. You will need to have capacity to make or change an existing Will. If you have dementia you may still be able to make a new Will or change your Will, but you should speak to your solicitor who may also need to contact your GP to check you do have capacity.

Why is a Lasting or Enduring Power of Attorney important? If you lose the ability to manage your own financial affairs, a partner or family member cannot automatically deal with things on your behalf. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place is just as important as having a Will. It gives you the reassurance of knowing

your wishes will be respected if you become unable to make decisions for yourself and it enables people you choose to have access to your finances to make payments on your behalf. If you have not made an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney it is still possible for someone who care for you to be appointed on your behalf to take decisions for you. You would need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship. A Deputy does the same job as an Attorney, but the application is time consuming, expensive and may not result in the person / people you want managing your affairs, as the Deputy is chosen by the Court, not you. It is better to make a Lasting Power of Attorney as it is quicker, cheaper ad you choose your Attorney.

The Financial consequences of dementia Following a diagnosis of dementia you may be worried and it makes good sense to take steps to ensure financial matters are taken care of. You should check you are getting all the help and state benefits you are entitled to, e.g do you qualify for Attendance Allowance? If you have concerns about your legal affairs in later life, please call 01263 823398 and speak to Lin or email lin@clapham-collinge.co.uk

Clapham & Collinge regularly hold ‘Dementia Awareness Sessions’ with Dementia Friends, to help spread the word about dementia, understand what it’s like to live with dementia and create a dementia friendly community. Over the last 12 months we have created over 60 new Dementia Friends in Norfolk. The next session is taking place on Wednesday 15th June, from 5.45pm - 6.45pm. ‘Tangled Tales’ is a fun cocktail of much-loved yarns and characters that sees Hansel and Gretel meet The young cast of ‘Tangled Tales’ in Red Riding Hood's big bad wolf, action the Wicked Witch, Snow Queen and the Three Little Pigs. It will be performed by a young cast, who also wrote the show and have ambitions of carving out careers in the performing arts, either on or off stage. The drama will be staged at the Little Theatre from 2-5 August with its daytime shows laced into the venue's well-known summer repertory season which has now been running for 56 years. It is by the Spinning Wheel Theatre’s ‘Takeover’ company who first aired the show at Bury St Edmunds earlier is year. The company's artistic director Amy Wyllie said "Sheringham wanted to add a children's show to the summer season and this seemed ideal. There are twists to the characters with the wolf as a wimp and the little pigs as baddies’. It gets over a message for children not to judge people by appearances," said Ms Wyllie, who is also directing The Railway Children in the summer season.

The 15-strong cast, mostly from Suffolk, all aim to work in the theatre world and are gaining a variety of experiences to help them learn and decide what jobs they are best suited for.

The company is adapting the show, performed in the round previously, to the Little Theatre’s stage. They are also preparing sets and publicity material.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said "Tangled Tales is really exciting for us as it is the first time we have had a visiting youth company who will be residents for a week. Adapting the show to our theatre will be a challenge for them, and they will be doing other theatre takes while they are here such as running the carnival talent show."

Spinning wheel producer Becca Gibbs will also be devising the sets for the whole summer season, using a more simplistic approach to enable the children's shows to be slotted in, and giving a fresh look to the rep. The Theatre Company are also running a Drama Summer School in Sheringham during the first week of the holidays for young people aged 10-16 years.

‘Tangled Tales’ is aimed at children aged 5 to 12 years and their families. Shows from 2-5 August are at 3pm apart from 4 August when it is 10am. For tickets (priced £5) and more information on the show or Summer School please call the box office on 01263 822347, or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2016 - ROYAL CONNECTIONS

The Queen made her 51st visit to the Chelsea Flower Show this year and there were many floral tributes to mark her 90th birthday. This made it a special occasion for all of us lucky enough to attend.

A grand floral arch was erected at the Bull Ring Entrance, inspired by a painting in the Royal Collection of a floral arch created to celebrate a visit of Queen Victoria to Reigate and follows a worldwide tradition of building triumphal arches. The arch was festooned with Britishgrown flowers. The arch was created by Shane Connolly, who was the florist responsible for directing the horticultural elements of the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and who possesses a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen.

At the London Gate, the RHS created six ‘crowning’ moments, one on top of each of the six gate pillars. Each was planted with seasonal English favourites such as roses, clematis and foxgloves that spilt over the edges and climbed up the iron arches.

There was also a photographic exhibition of the Queen’s visits to Chelsea over the years and the celebrations continued in the Great Pavilion where a number of exhibitors tailored elements of their displays to mark the Queen’s birthday and the continuing connections between the Royal family and the Royal Horticultural Society.

First time exhibitors New Covent Garden Flower Market, managed to keep their creation secret until the last minute. On Saturday night, four florists from London company Veevers Carter spent nearly eight hours creating a 10ft high 3D portrait of Her Majesty, using more than 4000 blooms in bands of vibrant colours. The familiar postage-stamp head was an intricate design incorporating three profiles in ascending sizes from the smallest in yellow-orange flowers, the middle-sized in pink-red, and the largest in blue-purple. The flower heads used were relatively small so the large hydrangeas were divided into individual florets to create a tapestry feel.

This dramatic installation was built inside a wall made of 90 black flowermarket buckets and on the back of the wall were foliage and flowers in green and white arranged to look as natural as possible. To keep both sides of the display in mint condition throughout the week an extra 2000 stems were kept in reserve.

presented to her at the Sandringham Flower Show of 2014.

The National Chrysanthemum Society introduced the first pink and green indoor chrysanthemum, named ‘Princess Charlotte’ so that the youngest member of the family did not feel left out.

All-in-all there was much to see and enjoy at this year’s show and our day there was blessed with very warm weather. However, my lasting memory has nothing to do with royalty but is the display of hepaticas by Ashwood Nurseries. These are tricky perennials in the buttercup family requiring full sun in spring and deep shade in summer. I have lost my one and only hepatica but John Massey has mastered their cultivation and brought to Chelsea an enormous variety of these plants in many colours and, quite rightly, won the Diamond Jubilee Award for the best exhibit in the floral pavilion. Come! Rejoice!

As the concluding act of North Walsham’s second festival, the men and boys of the church choir at St Nicholas will be presenting their annual concert.

This time entitled ‘Come! Rejoice!’, the concert will include music by some of the greatest of all English composers. Locally educated Benjamin Britten’s masterwork ‘Rejoice in the Lamb’ will be heard, alongside music written by Henry Purcell for Queen Mary’s birthday in

1695, music from the big and small screens by Howard Goodall (the ‘Vicar of Dibley’ theme music) and Geoffrey Burgon (Nunc Dimittis, used as the theme music of ‘Brideshead revisited.) There will also be an opportunity for audience participation in a rousing rendition of C.H.H. Parry’s iconic piece, Jerusalem.

The concert is on Sunday 26 June, starting at 6.30pm. Admission is £5, with under 16s free.

Alongside the church choir top soloist talent Zaira Palumbo, from Sprowston and now studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire (London), will be singing Soprano solo, and Lawrence Blyth, who sang in the church choir as a youngster before becoming a singer at Exeter and Truro Cathedrals and singing solo across the South West, will be returning to ‘where it all began’. They will be joined by William Falconer and Steven Dorans of Norwich Cathedral Choir and Harry Castle, a former member of Durham Cathedral Choir. Once again, Laurence Caldecote, who has recently played for HRH Princess Anne, will be accompanying the choir.

Director David Ballard said “It is wonderful that such a great body of talent want to come and work with the choir

in producing what should be a spectacular concert. This music is wonderful in every way - it sparkles with memorable tunes, cutting rhythms, and will show off all who perform it in the best light. This is all music performed with the forces for which it was written particularly for the Purcell this is quite rare, which is a shame as it is a gloriously upbeat piece of music written for Queen Anne’s birthday, and certainly beats the ‘Happy Birthday’ I got last year! The church choir has been blessed in recent times with many new members, both youngsters and adults alike, and is in the best form I can remember in my 20 years with the choir. The choir has recently had a very successful trip to St Albans and Waltham Abbeys, and sold over 150 copies of a Christmas CD last year. Come and see what the fuss is all about!

A summer scene

I walked up the hill and down to the stream, and drew in my breath at the colourful scene. A field of corn stirred in the breeze, sheep quietly grazed beneath the trees. Poppies, daisies and buttercups too helped to form this wonderful view. I sat and enjoyed my bread and cheese whilst listening to the hum of bees. Much later, I felt a chill as the sun went down behind the hill. Now it was time to cycle home, there’ll be other days when I can roam. Diane Berthelot

You have goat to be kidding me!

North Norfolk District Council brings Britain’s oldest breed of goat to Cromer cliff to control scrubland

A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cliff under control with the introduction of goats.

Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced off area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species and excessive growth to a minimum.

In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromer will be able to enjoy two-fold – for the habitat management the goats will offer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in the town. Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard to keep the town beautiful.”

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the

English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame.

NNDC’s Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their time on Cromer cliff. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fences will be checked twice a day. Cllr Fitch-Tillett added “We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need them to not get distracted.”

The habitat grazing project was developed with support from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Council in April.

Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they are raised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group.

The goats will be released into the fenced-off area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to other NNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

North Norfolk District Council wins Empty Homes Award

The prestigious Empty Homes Innovation Award has been given to NNDC’s Enforcement Board for their innovative approach to bringing empty homes back into use.

The Award recognises the Board’s close working across Council departments to ensure projects are identified and plans actioned without delay. Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council Judy Oliver said “We are incredibly proud to be given this award and I would like to offer my congratulations to the Enforcement Board.

“The success of this group is about the momentum to make things happen. The Board is a significant strength of the Council, speeding up both actions and outcomes in relation to the most problematic empty or derelict sites.”

NNDC’s Enforcement Board has considered 127 cases since it was set up in 2012, with positive action being taken on 121 cases.

David Gibbens Secretary of the Empty Homes Network said “Congratulations on this well-deserved success which will be an inspiration to other authorities up and down the country.”

The Award was presented by the Empty Homes Network at their annual conference in Birmingham in May.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Now that Harvey is much better he will be having another blood test, which will be sent to an external laboratory to confirm whether or not he is FIV positive. Once the result comes back, and depending on the result, he will be put up for adoption, possibly as an indoor cat. We will update you on the outcome next time.

Garfie, one of the other cats mentioned last time as being confirmed as FIV positive, has now left for a new home with another FIV positive cat. As he came from a multi cat household and is used to having feline companions, this is the ideal home for this lovely little lad.

Last time we mentioned the two kittens which are being hand reared and the importance of ensuring that to compensate for being without their mother’s milk, they get the next best start in life by providing good quality cat milk and food. We also mentioned the need to provide them with opportunities to interact with people and other animals and also to learn hunting and playing skills.

Another priority, not only with kittens but also all the cats, is to ensure that they are vaccinated to protect them from some of the serious infectious diseases (including FELV) which can affect felines. All our cats and kittens will have had, at least, their first injection before leaving our care and we pay for the second to be done with one of the three veterinary practices with whom we have accounts and which hold supplies of our vaccines. When a cat or kitten leaves for a new home we advise the new family not to let them go outside until at least two weeks

Beware of Slug Pellets

after the second injection has been given. This is particularly important for kittens as the antibodies they received from their mothers milk will have depleted and they will be more susceptible to infection as a consequence. Booster injections are recommended to ensure the cat remains protected and the kitten/cat’s vet will be able to advise the new family when these should be given.

We had a steady flow of supporters and cat lovers to our Spring Sale on 14 May and raised £658 for the cats in care. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who came to our sale. Tickets are now available for the Hog Roast at Dilham which takes place on Sunday 10 July.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered

I thought I would take the opportunity this month to point out a potentially fatal doggy hazard that has reared its head in the last few weeks - slug pellets.

There are many types of slug pellet on the market, but there seems to be little distinguishing them externally in terms of the risk to animals, which I find amazing considering they are designed to be sprinkled onto the ground!

The most dangerous type of slug pellets are those containing Metaldehyde and, unfortunately, a number of dogs die every year as a result of eating them. The toxin causes seizures and works very quickly so often we do not see patients until they are already fitting. In fact, I saw two dogs who had ingested slug pellets last weekend, but thanks to their owners prompt response both are Grooming Parlour fine now. Personally, I think the safest think is not to use slug pellets containing Metaldehyde at all.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to point out a campaign that has risen in prominence recently. It is known as the ‘Yellow Dog Project’ and was created to bring awareness to dogs who need space while training, recovering from surgery, or being rehabilitated.

If you see a dog with a YELLOW ribbon, bandanna or similar on the leash or on the dog, this is a dog which needs some space. This may be due to a previous bad experience, a dog recovering from surgery, a bitch in heat or even just an elderly or arthritic dog. As an owner of a dog who does not always like being approached when he is on a lead, I think the project is a great idea. Once word gets round and people recognise the yellow markers I am hopeful it will help to reduce the number of dog bite inMIKE WILKINS juries we see here at the vets.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB Members were invited to reflect upon nineteenth century social and spiritual attitudes at May’s meeting. Much of the century was dominated by a class system, which demanded that the populace conformed to practices which were unfair, and morally corrupt. The era did produce reformists who were prepared to challenge the system, among them William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, whose work was described by John Dyall in his presentation to the Club.

Booth, who was born in Nottingham in 1829, was committed to the commandment ‘that mankind shall love one another’. He started his working life as a pawnbroker’s assistant, but adopted Methodism and became a lay preacher. He found that many of the poor people felt alienated from mainstream religion, and sometimes rejected. Indeed, when he tried to introduce less advantaged people to the local chapel the reaction was, ‘but you can’t bring them in here’.

During the 1850s he moved to London, still working as a pawnbroker, this time with a Mr Rabbit. It was at this time he met, and fell in love with Kathleen Mundford, whom he married in 1855. During this period he felt that he had found his destiny, and started the Christian Mission in 1865, in London’s east end . It was labelled ‘a volunteer army’ at a time when volunteer armies were usually associated with mercenaries, with an unpopular reputation. The Salvation Armynwas officially formed in 1878, and adopted a uniform, which gradually evolved to its present form.

It was vigorously opposed in certain areas, notably Worthing, because of its concern with alcohol abuse, which was responsible for much suffering and poverty. It founded the Mothers’ Hospital, in Lower Clapton Road, London. The Army tried also to provide a more compassionate alternative to the Poor Law, and also demonstrated

CLASP 'Walking Out Of Darkness' Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has handed over a giant cheque to one of two local charities for which he recently fundraised.

The former health minister managed to raise over £3,500 during a 10 mile sponsored walk through London and presented a cheque to Mancroft Advice Project (MAP) in Norwich at the beginning of the month. He is due to do the same for the Holt Youth Project sometime later in June.

Speaking about the charities Norman said “Each person doing the sponsored walk could raise funds for mental health charities of their choice and I decided that these two brilliant charities in Norfolk deserved my support as they do incredible work. The Holt Youth Project is an

that matches could be produced without the effect of ‘phossy jaw’ to the unfortunate women working in the factories.

Probably the most outstanding initiative was in 1882, when Bramwell Booth, William’s son, W. T. Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, together with Rebecca Jarrett, a reformed brothel keeper, bought a twelve year old girl from her mother and took her to France. Although no harm came to the girl, Eliza, Stead was sentenced to three months imprisonment, and Rebecca Jarrett, six months, notwithstanding that Rebecca had been persuaded to help against her better judgment. Dan Mobbs, CEO of MAP, praised Norman's efforts saying “It's great to see Norman showing his support for young people. We really appreciate how willing he is to promote our work with young people's mental health, so that young people can access expert help early on, preventing unnecessary distress and crisis.”

The sponsored walk, called 'Walking Out Of Darkness', took place on Saturday 14 May and saw thousands of people walk 10 miles through London to end the stigma surrounding mental illness and signalled the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 (16th to 22nd May).

Organised by Counselling Life Advice Suicide Prevention Charity (CLASP Charity), a charity which aims to confront the stigma surrounding mental and stress related illnesses, it was the third time the walk had been organised. It was supported by the Department of Health, NHS, Time to Change, Rethink Mental Illness, Bank of England, Legal & General and others.

Starting and finishing in Battersea Park walkers took in several of London's iconic landmarks including the London Eye, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and the Shard.

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival

Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival, which takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 7 July to Sunday 10 July.

Last year’s theme was ‘A Touch of Wonder’ and the theme was very cleverly interpreted.

The annual festival, which has been run for over 40 years, is a major event for both the church and the town and regularly attracts over 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.

This year’s theme is ‘I AM’ and over 25 arrangements will depict this theme, with titles such as ‘I AM going to the zoo’, ‘I AM a fisherman’ and ‘I AM a bake off contestant’. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, adds to the ambiance of the event.

lunches, cream teas and an extensive choice of cakes on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival is a thoroughly enjoyable way to pass a few hours.

Entry to the festival is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Proceeds from the festival go to church funds but each year a sizeable donation is given to a local charity, which this year is the Nook Appeal for EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospice).

In addition to being amazed by the floral arrangements, visitors will be able to browse the many stalls offering a superb variety of plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, Each year the flower arrangers design their souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, floral displays to a specific theme with Christian books, Traidcraft quality exceptional attention to detail and creativity. bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various CHORAL SOCIETY CELEBRATE quizzes. NORMAN LAMB CALLS FOR...

CHANGE IN THE MENTAL CAPACITY ACT CODE OF PRACTICE

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, is taking action with fellow East Anglia MPs Dr. Dan Poulter (Central Suffolk and North Ipswich) and Peter Aldous (Waveney) to call for a change in the law to improve support for benefits recipients who lack the mental capacity to manage their financial affairs.

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 established the Court of Protection to provide protection for individuals who lack mental capacity to make decisions about their own lives. This can include the appointment of a Deputy, who is authorised to make decisions for those unable to manage their financial affairs. However, the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act currently advises that people who are receiving benefits do not generally require the assistance of a Deputy – making it extremely difficult for these people to manage their finances, pay a mortgage, and authorise a range of basic day-to-day payments. Norman Lamb, together with Dan Poulter and Peter Aldous, has tabled a parliamentary motion calling for a change in the Code of Practice to allow the appointment of Deputies for people who are in receipt of benefits.

The Professional Deputy Service scheme in Suffolk currently offers a Deputy service to benefits recipients, allowing them ‘to manage their finances and to live as independently as possible’. This has had a huge impact on the lives of many vulnerable people in the county.

Norman Lamb MP said “I’m very pleased to work with Dan Poulter and Peter Aldous to highlight this unfairness. In its current form, the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act means that many people who are already in a vulnerable position miss out on crucial support for managing their finances. We should always aim to learn from best practice, and the Professional Deputy Service in Suffolk has shown the difference that the appointment of a Deputy can make to the lives of people who are receiving benefits. I hope that the Government will recognise the importance of this and implement the changes to the Code of Practice without delay.”

Dr. Dan Poulter MP said “I am very happy to jointly sponsor this Early Day Motion (EDM) and welcome the opportunity to raise this issue in Parliament. This is the first in a series of steps to address an undesirable and unintentional consequence of the Mental Health Act.”

Peter Aldous, MP said “It is important that there is an amendment to the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The work of the Professional Deputy Service shows a clear need for their services to help those most vulnerable who struggle to look after their own finances.”

URGENT ACTION TO COMMUNICATE RISKS OF 2015 DRUG IN PREGNANT WOMEN

Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, has tabled a parliamentary motion calling for urgent action to ensure that women are properly informed of the risks of a drug that can cause severe harm to an unborn child. Valproate is used for treating epilepsy and bipolar disorder – but has long been known to carry an increased risk of birth defects and developmental disorders in babies when taken by pregnant women. These can include spina bifida, malformations of the face, skull, limbs and organs, lower intelligence, poor speech and language skills, and memory problems.

Following a Europe-wide review, which came about following pressure from Norman Lamb and campaigners during his time as Health Minister, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has developed a Toolkit to ensure that women who are being prescribed valproate medicines are better informed about the risks of the drug during pregnancy. The Toolkit includes clearer warning labels on valproate packaging, information booklets for women, and a checklist to ensure that the risks have been properly discussed with the prescribing clinician. Although the Government says that the Toolkit should have been issued by the MHRA and the manufacturer in February 2016, there have been reports that many clinicians and pharmacies have not received these essential resources – meaning that women across the country remain at risk of taking the medicine without being fully aware of its dangers.

The motion tabled by Norman Lamb calls on the MHRA, UK Government, and NHS England to intervene urgently to ensure that the Valproate Toolkit is received and properly utilised by clinicians and pharmacists nationwide.

Norman Lamb said “It’s incredibly worrying that this crucial information Toolkit isn’t getting through to women as it should. Valproate can cause severe harm to an unborn child, and the decision to use the medicine should only be made when a woman is fully informed of its risks. These risks have been known by regulators for decades. Now that this Toolkit has finally been developed, the Government, MHRA and NHS England must waste absolutely no time in getting to the root of this problem. There has to be accountability.” Janet Williams and Emma Murphy from IN-FACT (The Independent Fetal Anti Convulsant Trust), which has campaigned for better communication of the risks of using valproate in pregnancy, said “IN-FACT worked closely with the MHRA to agree and disseminate the Valproate Toolkit. But because the MHRA has only sent the toolkit to pharmacies and surgeries that subscribe to its alerts system, it seems that its distribution has been left largely in the hands of the drugs company. “This has caused system failure with this vital information not reaching women of child-bearing age, and therefore around 30,000 women prescribed valproate unable to make that all-important informed choice.”

Dear Margaret,

I just thought I'd drop you a quick line to let you know that our charity fun day, which you kindly wrote an article for, was a huge success. In total we raised £2506.10 from the day and currently we've got around £900 from online auctions of football kit. In terms of the football match, North Walsham won 4-0 against the team made up of my friends from the University of Lincoln. On behalf of mum and I, we would like to express our thanks to everyone involved for making it such a wonderful day. Kind regards, Nathan Hill

European Championships 2016 by Joel Lodge, our football correspondent

England 1 Russia 1

England played well against an average Russian side to kick off their Euro 2016 campaign. However they could only come out with a draw after a header in the dying minutes of the game.

England started in positive fashion with chances coming through attempts by Adam Lallana, who perhaps could have done better with them as they didn’t test the Russian goalkeeper Akinfeev, with one shot being straight at him and the other going narrowly wide. One major talking point to come out of this game was the decision by Roy Hodgson to place Harry Kane on corners. This was because Harry Kane is definitely more of a force to be reckoned with inside the penalty area, rather than being the man who whips in the crosses from dead ball situations. Furthermore, Harry Kane stands over 6ft tall and is an aerial threat to opposing teams, meanwhile Raheem Sterling, who is a small player, was inside the box instead and he has a far less chance of reaching the ball from a corner than Harry Kane would.

In the second half England continued their pressure from the first half, with a big chance falling to England captain Wayne Rooney as he hit a beautiful right footed shot into the bottom left hand corner, only for it to be superbly turned onto the post by Akinfeev. The deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute as Eric Dier smashed an unstoppable 20 yard free-kick past the impressive Akinfeev to give England the lead their performance warranted. However, in typical England fashion in the dying embers of the game, some poor defending allowed Russian defender Berezutski to climb highest in the box to loop a header over Joe Hart to crush the hearts of the thousands of England fans watching at home and in the Stade Velodrome. Overall, there are positives that England can take from the game.

North Norfolk Speakers Club -

However the match will be forever over shadowed by the disturbing scenes at the end of the match with Russian fans storming into the England section and attacking fans as they tried to desperately escape.

England 2 Wales 1

In one of the early kick offs of the Euro’s, England fought brilliantly against a robust Welsh side in what was one of the best games of the tournament so far. In the opening minutes of the game a mistake by the Welsh defence allowed Dele Alli to race through on Stuurige is a winner goal and play a wonderful ball into the area for Raheem Sterling to pounce on however he put the ball over from close range when it seemed easier to hit the target. Another big chance for England came through Chris Smalling that narrowly went past the left hand side post. The game however took a turn for the worse from the perspective of an England fan as Gareth Bale hit a free kick from around 35 yards which crept into the bottom corner after some woeful goalkeeping from Joe Hart, who could do nothing else other than parry Bale’s effort into his net. England came back after the break with a bang, as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were replaced by Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy, after Sterling and Kane’s poor first half performances. Roy Hodgson’s half time subs paid dividends as Vardy capitalised on a mistake from an Ashley Williams header allowed to him to swivel on the half turn and place the ball past Wayne Hennessey. Finally, in the dying embers of the game, Daniel Sturridge topped off the best second half comeback England could’ve wished for as he worked his way into the area and poked the ball past Hennessey. After a poor first half, this result gives England some hope if they can make it through to the knockout stages as it will only take a point against Slovakia to secure their place in the next round.

North Walsham Table Tennis Season Concludes with a Glimpse of the Future

As is now traditional, the final action of the season provided a glimpse of the future with the Junior Championships as sixteen boys and girls from both the North Walsham and Aylsham clubs contested thirty-nine matches over three hours at North Walsham Sports Centre. There were two events held with one competition for the juniors who regularly compete in the League and another for those less experienced. The non-League players were split into two groups. Zara Last, Henry Wilkinson, Thomas Mountain, Charlieze Goff and Jasper Dyson made up Group 1 while Thomas Rooke, Zak Last, Freya Wilkinson, Harry Mountain, Louis Hancock and Daisy Bolton contested Group 2. Every point counted during this round robin stage with each player playing two sets against the other players in their group and the points totalled. Thomas Mountain dominated Group 1, winning each of his eight sets while Jasper Dyson finished as runner-up. In Group 2, Thomas Rooke won all of his ten sets but the battle for the runners-up spot was tight with Louis Hancock edging out Harry Mountain by eight points. The semifinals saw both Thomas’s win two sets to love as Rooke and Mountain beat Jasper Dyson and Louis Hancock respectively. The first set of the final was won by North Walsham’s Rooke

11-6, with the second set taken by Aylsham’s Mountain 11-8 – however as he had won the first a bit more comfortably, Thomas Rooke was the winner by two points – 19 to 17.

The League competition saw Harley Dyson, Ben Lester, Joel Lodge, Becky Wood and Fletcher Dyson compete in a round-robin format against each other with each match this time the best of three sets and the two players who topped the group meeting again in the final. As with the non-League competition, the final pitted one member of both clubs against each other as Aylsham’s Harley Dyson took on North Walsham’s Joel Lodge. Dyson had won both sets of their group meeting 11-9 and started confidently winning the first five points of the final, however Lodge hit back to take the next three. Dyson was the more consistent as he took his second set-point to claim the first 11-5. Lodge settled better into the second set which featured some good attacking play and one exceptional return of a smash from Dyson. Good smashes from Lodge kept him in contention but a miss at 6-9 gave Dyson four Championship points. All four were well saved by Lodge who continued to produce his best play when behind, but Dyson took the next two points to win 11-5, 12-10.

Looking back at the season that ended in May pride of place has to be given to the Under 12s. They went through the season unbeaten, not only against local sides, but also at the Kingswood, Market Harborough and Shelford festivals. The pinnacle of their achievements was winning the Leicester Tigers Land Rover Premiership Cup where in their six matches they scored 24 tries whilst conceding just three. The team are pictured on their visit to Twickenham for the Aviva Premiership Final between Saracens and Exeter, where they were part of the "Parade of Champions" introduced to the capacity crowd at half time.

The Vikings will have a new coaching set up next season with both Nick Greenhall and Spencer Williams moving on, the former to become Head
