Swim Safe - don’t get caught in a Rip
Advice issued by the RNLI Happisburgh following the tragic events at the end of July at Sea Palling.
Rip Currents are strong currents running out to sea. They can take you from the shallows very quickly and leave you out of your depth.
If you are caught in a Rip: • Stay calm, don’t panic • If you can stand, wade – don’t try to swim • If you have an inflatable or board, keep hold of it to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help loudly • Don’t swim directly against the Rip or you will get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the Rip, then make for the shore

St Margaret’s Church, Thorpe Market has recycled since the 1980s. Starting with a paper bank in the stable (what a fire hazard in retrospect) loaded by a chain of volunteers, progressing to the current recycling centre on the church car park. Glass and paper are collected in more or less equal amounts totalling 20 tons each year. We are also happy to be hosting a Clothing Bank on behalf of the Salvation Army.
The reward to church funds is the Landfill Tax Rebate from the government amounting to over £50 a ton. It goes without saying that we welcome all donations of glass and papers. This is a vital part of the equation to help our small village church survive. We are very grateful to all who support this aspect of church-life.
‘The skips now on our car park have an appetite that's great, So pop your glass and papers in, we do appreciate. It helps us raise some money, to keep us from the ‘red’ So please, not in your wheelie bins, but in our skips instead! We'd love your glass and papers, contributions great and small, For us they mean REAL money, so let us have them all!
Millfield’s Talent Shines Through!
Napoleon Bonaparte once said ‘let the path be open to talent’ and that’s certainly what transpired during Millfield Primary’s Annual Talent Show last month.
Artiste accomplishment and natural ability shone throughout the afternoon as the ‘judges’ watched in awe at the individual acts.
The children of Millfield clapped and whooped every act that performed on the stage, showing a unity and appreciation of the amazing performances. Edward Liddiard from Willow Class started the show off with three fantastic songs on the violin followed by an array of acts ranging from puppet shows, dancers, singers, jokes and an amazing ballet and gymnastic routine! Also this year saw an amazing range of musical talent - groups played guitar, recorder and keyboard and we had many soloist performers on the piano, violin, and drums!
It was truly an exceptional year for talent and the children are already planning what they will be auditioning for next year.

Tragic call out at Sea Palling
Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action at 11:30am, when the pagers sounded. Two crews were on Station and afloat by 11:40am. The Spirit of Berkhamsted, the Station’s D Class, with Charlotte Siely at the helm and Tim Grimmer and Martin Gibbs as crew and the Atlantic 75 (Joan Mary) with Tony Phenix as helm and Will Baker and Gabby Hawker as crew. Reports were that two people had been pulled unconscious from the sea at Sea Palling with unknown other casualties. The D Class arrived 9 minutes later between Reefs 3 & 4, Sea Palling and the boat was run ashore and all the crew went to the aid of the two unconscious casualties. The Atlantic searched the sea for any other persons in the water before putting Tony Phenix ashore to help with casualties. There was one unconscious male, but breathing; the second male was also unconscious but not breathing
for himself (and subsequently did not survive). There was an off-duty doctor and fireman working together with RNLI Lifeguards, trying to preserve life. There were two other minor casualties with ’near drowning’ symptoms also being attended to . It appears that the four were swimming between the beach and the reef, when they were caught by a rip tide; a young male, aged approximately 14 had gone into the water and pulled the two unconscious casualties onto the beach, while others called for help. An Air Ambulance landed on the beach and worked with the Lifeboat crew, then the Humber Coastguard helicopter landed, followed by a second Air Ambulance with Coastguards and other emergency services. The unconscious, but breathing casualty, was taken by Air Ambulance to Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The two casualties with ‘near drowning’ symptoms were taken by Ambulance to hospital.
Interested in becoming a crew member at Happisburgh?
The other casualty was transferred to an Ambulance by Happisburgh D Class. The crew sorted out their equipment and returned to Station, being ready for service at 3pm. This was the first call-out for both Martin Gibbs and Gabby Walker, also the first time Charlotte Siely had helmed the D Class on a call-out. Senior Helmsman, Tim Grimmer said “The 14yr-old boy was very brave and quickthinking and gave the two men the best chance of survival but he could have been the third casualty. If you see someone in trouble in the sea or any water call 999 and ask for the Coastguard; avoid entering the water yourself”.
The charity welcomes people from all walks of life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.
Happisburgh RNLI is always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello.
Volunteers meet first and third Sunday mornings at 8.00am (each month) and second and fourth Tuesday evenings at 7.00pm (each month) for their training exercises.

Whole Baked Mackerel
We’re well into the summer now and the garden is throwing fresh, beautiful produce at us at 100mph, almost too much to keep up with! The highlight as always are John’s magnificent new potatoes, a triumph of modern engineering, absolutely delicious with a nutty, smooth bouquet and a delicate yet overwhelming finish. Perfect with a little bit of salted butter (and a couple of Davies’ massive Cromer lobsters of course).

John once brought a whole pail in, only to find an hour later one of the kitchen porters hacking away at them with a potatoes peeler. District Council-nominated building site supervisor wins coveted award
Martin Weavers has won the regional round of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Site Supervisor of the Year Award after being nominated by North Norfolk District Council.
Martin works for Norfolk Homes and was recognised for his outstanding work as site supervisor during work for 145 dwellings in Roughton Road, Cromer in partnership with NNDC.
Cllr Sue Arnold Cabinet Member for planning policy said “Our building team was incredibly impressed by Martin- the way he understood the facets of the job, the potential and actual challenges and his consideration of the bigger picture. His positive and can-do attitude was noted by everyone who worked with him.
“This is a well-deserved award and we can only wish Martin the very best of luck as

The 2016 “World Walk” for Brain Tumours is a project of the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA) and is in its tenth year. making the Festival a success.”
Norfolk Chief Executive Joseph Ballard.
The play was performed in different locations around the town centre and took place inside St Nicholas Church for its second show due to heavy rainfall. The play involved some Morris dancing from ‘Pedants Revolt’, some puppet, folk song, local actors and members of Arts North Norfolk’s adult acting group and North Walsham Community Choir.
The Mynx Soul Band played an energetic gig on the park, the Mamma Mia Sing-Along had people laughing and dancing down the aisles at the Atrium Theatre and the Festival Parade once again provided a colourful and loud display through the town centre.
St Nicholas Church was the venue for weekday events including the lunchtime recital series, and also the Festival Open Art exhibition which had 30 different artists involved. The North Walsham Festival was part of a wider project that has been funded by Arts Council England.
Joseph Ballard said “I am very proud of our Festival this year. It has grown significantly in just 12 months and we have also been presenting different experiences for the town, some that challenge and some that delight! I heartily thank all our volunteers who have been part of
Joseph also encourages people to support the charity throughout the year. “The North Walsham Festival is the biggest event in the town’s calendar – something we should be very proud of as its programme could rival many other arts festivals for towns of this size. But I do want to stress that we need the community to support us all year round – not just at Festival time.”
The charity presents film, theatre and workshops all year round. This summer includes a free open-air tour of Goldilocks and the Three Bears around North Norfolk, summer cinema and the annual Summer Theatre Academy where 8-17s make a show in just five days from 23 to 27 August at the Atrium Theatre. The charity is also recruiting new volunteers to help in the town centre box office and information point at No. 1 Market Place. Members of the community with some spare time are welcome to help out – even if it just for a few hours a month or a regular shift during the week.
More listings about events, films and workshops this summer can be found at www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.

Dear Margaret,
Just give a quick update to let you know that mum and I have reached our fund raising target of £4000 which, as mentioned previously, is now being donated equally between the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK.
This is the grand total from both the Charity Fun Day and all of its various activities and also a car boot sale we did at the Memoria Park on North Walsham Fun Day.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped and donated for their kindness and support.
Kind regards, Nathan (Hill)

Peter’s daredevil wing walk brings over £1000 to About With Friends
Peter White is a member of the Cromer-based charity About with Friends, who support adults with learning disabilities.
Peter works in their Community Shop in Garden Street twice a week and attends social activities with the group. When he heard that they needed to replace their ageing minibus with a new one, Peter decided he wanted to do something for the organisation that supports him. He had already parachuted out of a plane to raise money for another charity but this time Peter chose to be strapped to the top wing of a biplane and fly over the Gloucestershire countryside.
Peter admits he was very nervous about making the wing walk and almost dropped out especially when the first date was cancelled due to a poor weather forecast. However, when the day came, Peter rose to the challenge and rose to the skies. Afterwards Peter joked that if he ever suggested wing-walking again he wanted someone to shoot him in the leg! His incredible effort has so far earned £1100 for About with Friends and sponsorship money is still coming in.
About with Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships, engage in fun and active social activities, get involved in the community, have the chance to try new experiences, learn new skills both for life and work but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.
Classic Cars
Cromer based charity, About with Friends, have benefitted to the tune of £1250 by being the chosen charity for this year’s Charles Clarke Classic Car Rally. The event, which took place on Sunday 10th July, involved some 80 classic cars driving from the Goat Inn at Skeyton to the Cathedral in Norwich, where they were viewed by hundreds of visitors.

The Rally is in its 22nd year and was named for a car enthusiast who died in a boating accident in 1998. For the past eight years it has been organised by Brian Monks with the help of his family and friends. Brian is pictured presenting the cheque to About with Friends’ member Tony Edwards who acted as a marshal at the event. Other members and Brian’s family are also pictured.
The rally was also a social activity for a group from the charity who enjoyed looking at such classic vehicles as a Stanley Steam carriage and an Austin Healey. Fittingly, the donation will be used towards funding a new minibus for the organisation. Karen Funnell, who represented About with Friends at the Rally, said that the old minibus was quickly heading towards Classic status and any contributions towards a new one would be eagerly received.

Inner Wheel
The Cromer & Sheringham Inner Wheel ladies met during the summer at The Virginia Court Hotel for the monthly meetings and AGM. We all enjoyed a garden party to celebrate The Queens 90th birthday at member Jane's home at Kelling Heath. Jane provided good food and lovely summer weather. On July 13th we all met Maureen Ford MBE at Hamptons Restaurant in Bawdswell to say (standing) and Sybil Taylor, thank you to our president Carol for all she has members of the club. done this year; Shay presented her with a gift and flowers. Carol then thanked everyone for all the support she had received during the year and said that £425 had been raised for her chosen charity The Big C. Our next Social event will be a barbecue on 20th August at Rita Holland's home – this is the president’s gift to us to say thank you.
The next Club meeting will be on September 1st when Carol Selwyn will continue to be President for the coming year. We share a meal together at the Virginia Court Hotel in Cromer each month with a guest speaker afterwards. We have a lot of fun, enjoy fellowship and try to support those in need in this country and abroad. Our membership is open to any women who would be interested in joining us. For more information about our Inner Wheel club then please contact Carol Selwyn on 01263513717.

Keeping it in the Family By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr
Looking after one’s elderly, incapable or vulnerable family members is natural and has happened forever. Many would consider it outside the interference of the legal system. Being paid within the family has always taken place on an informal basis, especially where someone has given up work to look after a relative and needs money to live on whilst they do so.
These days ‘Family Care Payments’ (FCPs) or ‘gratuitous care payments’ are the formal terms for such arrangements. The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) has increasingly been requiring Deputies to seek authorisation to such packages. Its approach in the past has been over-zealous. The OPG has recently published useful guidance in the form of a practice note setting out the legal framework and the OPG’s approach to such payments. This applies only to Court of Protection appointed Deputies under a Finance and Property Order. It does not yet apply to the same sort of arrangements made in other circumstances.
In the 2015 case of Re HNL Senior Judge Lush lifted reporting restrictions and set in motion the issue of this guidance. In that case he commended the family on the ‘exemplary care’ which was provided on a ‘significantly cheaper’ basis than commercial care. Previously, he had held that the rate paid should be no more than the going commercial care but with a 20% reduction, largely to reflect the fact that no income tax is payable on FCPs. Inflation-proofing was authorised in advance so as to reduce the cost of returning to Court for a review.
It is good to see such a common-sense approach to an age-old situation.

GOOD FOOD, GOOD BEER, GOOD TIMES
When family members provide informal care for an individual lacking mental-capacity, it may involve anything from small scale care or providing companionship, to full-time care. The kind of care arrangement that might justify a FCP includes situations where there would not normally be any formal contractual relationship between the person and the family member providing care, as that care is given out of their natural love and affection.
Black Swan
Black Swan, Black Swan Loke, North Walsham NR28 9BX
The new guidance explains the OPG’s position on FCPs that Deputies make to such family members who provide care. It defines the arrangements and sets out the Deputy’s authority to make payments; including factors to consider when agreeing and calculating such payments. The OPG considered that FCPs can be in the person’s best interests, providing the FCP is properly set up and managed. The care must be of a good standard and required by the person in question. Guidance is provided as to increases in payments and record keeping.
Matters to be taken into account include: the care actually given, affordability, other contributions made to household upkeep, savings on the cost of commercial care and the overall family situation. Other family members should be consulted, wherever possible.
Although not applicable to those with Lasting or Enduring Powers of Attorney (LPAs and EPAs), the note is useful to families making bestinterests decisions in similar situations.

We enjoyed looking at the jaguars, macaws, cheeky monkeys (including a baby), the flamingos and birds of prey. We talked to one of the parrots and watched the iguanas, cockroaches and otter being fed. We played on the outdoor and indoor play area, had a picnic and went home exhausted - well the adults did anyway!

THE NORTH WALSHAM TIMES WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!
On Sunday 18 September from 10am to 12pm we aim to carry out a major clean up of the Pond and its surrounding area, prior to the visit by North Walsham Friday Cubs who will be Pond dipping on Friday evening 23 September. Due to the good weather, the plants have grown so fast, and high that you can hardly see the pond. The good side of this is that at the moment the fish have some protection from attacks by the Heron who visits each day.
If you would like to help, please arrive by 10-00am you will need to wear old clothing and wellingtons or boots. If possible please bring with you rake / fork and if you have one, a wheel barrow. Soft drinks will be available. Anybody wishing to join the Bluebell Pond Society can do so by contacting Roy Haynes, Chairman on 01692 405945 or check the web page www.northwalshamguide.co.uk/bluebell-pond_97.aspx.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have now been running our special £5 neutering campaign for more than a year and many people have taken up the offer. Although this does mean there will be less unwanted kittens being born there are still too many out there needing to come into care and being offered for sale. We usually ask the person where they obtained their cat/kitten to see if we can offer assistance to other cats/kittens from the same family. Very often they have been obtained from websites and the people concerned often comment on the poor condition of their new pet and the place it has come from.
Looking on line, we are amazed at the claims being made by the people who advertise there and know that these websites are working with other organisations to investigate the claims being made by the sellers and also identify people who are selling cats and kittens for profit.
Some cats and kittens are advertised as pedigree crosses when it is obvious they are not. Some also charge a higher amount for kittens of a certain colour which leads us to believe they could possibly be letting their cats have kittens to make money. To us, the colour of the cat is not important; it is far more important to ensure it is healthy Grooming Parlour and what its character and temperament is. So often we find it is ‘the little black Full Grooming & Hydrobathing kitten’ in the litter Kerstin Rogers Available that charms us all and is the one we

would love to offer a home to.
Adverts for kittens very often state they are litter trained. Although you may find the odd kitten might need to be encouraged to use a litter tray, the majority will find their way there without any guidance from the mother or their carers. Claims are also made that the cat/kitten has been treated for fleas and worms but so often people tell us that it is not the case. Mention of vaccinating, micro chipping and being checked by a vet to ensure they are healthy are very rare indeed but very important.
Although you may not get your cat or kitten from us we do hope that this information will help ensure that you give a home to a healthy, well adjusted animal and you are not encouraging someone to breed kittens for profit. We will continue to run our neutering campaign and in time we do hope this will mean there are less cats and kittens out there, unwanted and needing our help to find loving new homes.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered
North Walsham in Bloom would like to thank everyone who kindly gave money to our Street Collection on 16 June. A total of £130 was collected.

Get set for summer with Animal Magic Dog Club Now that the warmer weather is finally here, we are all looking forward to enjoying the summer but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke - which can be fatal.
Here are our Animal Magic top tips for a safe summer with your dog: • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven very quickly. Remember - dogs die in hot cars. • Try to walk your dog in the cool of the morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise excessively in hot weather. • Consider having your dog’s coat clipped for the summer, most breeds seem to really appreciate this. • Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors. • If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when
it is cooler and you will usually find their appetite returns. • Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days, and give your dog frequent small amounts. • Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe. It’ll help them keep cool, but after fun in the water always dry their ears and under collars to avoid irritations. but most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!

Norwich City's Championship Campaign
Norwich City pre-season so far and transfers update by Joel Lodge
After the stress of a tough season in the Premier league last year, the Norwich City squad re-grouped in late June to prepare for the promotion battle in the Championship next year. After a 6-week break for all the players who didn’t play at the Euro’s the players have come back looking quite fresh after judging the opening friendlies of pre-season. Norwich started off their pre-season campaign in positive fashion with a 2-1 win in a behind closed doors friendly vs. Walsall, followed by a 3-0 win away at a rather poor Peterborough side. Norwich then travelled to their weeklong training camp in Austria with 2 friendly matches against FK Dukla Prague and Rubin Kazan respectively. The first
game of the Austrian tour was against Dukla Prague, which unfortunately ended in 3-1 loss for Norwich against the well drilled Croatian side. Against Rubin Kazan however, Norwich fared better as they managed to beat the Russian side 2-1 in what was a well-fought victory against the 2 time Russian champions. As for the transfer window, Norwich have only sold two players in this transfer window with Nathan Redmond being sold to Southampton at the start of the transfer window for 11 million pounds and Jake Kean going to Sheffield Wednesday, the highest transfer fee Norwich have ever received for a player. After the sales of Redmond and Kean, Norwich needed a new right

winger and a new goalkeeper to provide competition with John Ruddy and Declan Rudd; this is why Liverpool youngster Sergi Canos came in to replace Redmond after starring on loan at Brentford in the Championship last season and the young winger comes in with a high reputation and a lot of promise as he will attempt to fill the void left by Redmond, meanwhile, Jake Kean has been replaced by the hero of Northern Ireland at the Euro’s, Michael McGovern who starred in particular against Germany as he put in a stellar performance in an attempt to keep Northern Ireland in the game.
NW Vikings in training
Pre-season training has been in full swing since early July under the direction of new Head of Rugby James Brooks. Fresh from contributing to England's historic series victory in Australia, Ben Youngs (pictured left) has been amongst those assisting at the Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions. Whilst his brother, fellow international Tom, briefly played for the Vikings, Ben never did, but the Leicester Tigers, England and British Lions scrum half was in the Youth section for a couple of seasons. His father Nick, also an international, was Coach at Scottow in the 1990s. With player numbers increasing North Walsham will be running a third team for the first time in many years. "The Warriors" will play sixteen matches in Eastern Counties Four North, two leagues below the club's 2nd XV "the Raiders", and have also been entered into the Norfolk 3rd XV Cup. New players are very welcome.
Ahead of the opening league fixture at Old Priorians on 3 September, two friendlies have been organised: home to Gravesend on 20 August and away to Kettering the following week. Like the Vikings both play at tier six in the nationwide league structure. The Vikings first home league fixture is against Chelmsford on 17 September.
