S.O.S FROM NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Things are getting very desperate at North Walsham in Bloom on the helpers front. We are now down to nine people to do all our work. This is a very serious situation for us.
We are finding it impossible to keep up with all the work we need to do. At the moment, it is necessary for our helpers to go out for two mornings a week just to keep up. This is not ideal as we all have other commitments. If things do not improve soon, it will lead to a backlog of things to do and ultimately some of our beds and tubs will suffer.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that some of our areas will have to be abandoned. So, if anyone can help us, please do get in touch with either Muriel Moorhouse 01692 400717 or Marion Lane 01692 405211. We are not expecting total commitment or asking that you come every week, but whatever you can manage. It would be helpful to know when you would be available as we can then plan what work we do at that time. So if you would like a natter with a great bunch of people whilst tidying up our tubs and beds and helping your community at the same time, give us a ring On a different note we will be having our Coffee Morning at St Nicholas Hall on 8 September from 9am until 12noon, coffee, tea, chocolate and squash will be available along with fruit and cheese scones, biscuits and a tombola. Please come along and support us.
We hope you all agree that the town looks lovely at the moment. We are very proud of our town and would very much like to keep up our standard. It is also possible that we could have an Open Gardens next summer if we can get enough help. New Puzzle Page & Competition inside this issue

A North Norfolk food bank will provide a lifeline for even more families in crisis after cutting its running costs with the introduction of an all-electric Nissan e-NV200 van.
Cromer and District Food Bank, which covers an area of 200 square miles, supplied three-day emergency food packages to 2,409 people in need, including 920 children, last year.
And now it will be able to help even more vulnerable local people after taking delivery of its new 100% electric Nissan van, which has been funded by a grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and supplied and sponsored by local Nissan dealership, Crayford and Abbs. The Nissan e-NV200 costs just two pence per mile to run and has significantly lower maintenance costs. The charity will use the savings it makes to feed more families.
Ella King, Project Manager at Cromer and District Foodbank, said “We cover around 200 miles a day making deliveries and before we were spending a small fortune on diesel. Now though, the e-NV200 has cut our running costs significantly and that’s money we can plough straight back into providing food for the people we exist to support.
She added There’s a huge and growing need for food banks in and around this area so the addition of this van and the support of the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund and Crayford and Abbs is real boost.”
Kevin Abbs, Director at Crayford & Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Bodiham near Holt, said: “Foodbanks are so important to families across the country so we were delighted to be of help to Cromer and District Foodbank, whose work is having a great impact in the area.
“More and more businesses are making the switch to electric motoring and immediately seeing the benefits. We hope they will enjoy the vehicle as they continue to help more families and young people in need.” For more information visit www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk

Dales Summer Berry Eton Mess by Matt Stacey - Dales Head Chef
It’s definitely the time of year when the British summer berries are well and truly in season. When the summer temperature sore, the temptation for a cool and refreshing summer treat kicks in. And here at the Dales we like to treat our guests to as simple but elegant Summer Berry Eton Mess.
All of the products above can be found in your local supermarket... as well as a few cheats to help you along the way with your meringue.
Matt Stacey, head chef at the Dales produces this yummy desert for his lucky visitors to the Dales Hotel. Summer Berry Eton Mess - no more need be said, except prepare and enjoy! Ingredients
Meringue 4 x large egg whites at room temperature 115g caster sugar 115g icing sugar Chantilly Cream 200g Double cream 100g Sugar Tspn Vanilla Essence Fresh Summer Berries Berry Coulis Strawberries to garnish
Method
1. Preheat the oven to fan 100C/
01263 824555
conventional 110C/gas 1⁄4. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper (meringue can stick on greaseproof paper and foil). 01263 838383 2. Tip the 4 large egg whites into a large clean mixing bowl (not plastic). Beat them on medium speed with an electric hand whisk until the mixture resembles a fluffy cloud and stands 01263 579579 up in stiff peaks when the blades are lifted. 3. Now turn the speed up and start to add 115g caster sugar, a dessertspoonful at a time. Continue beating for 3-4 seconds between each addition. It’s important to add the sugar slowly at this stage as it helps prevent the meringue from weeping later. However, don’t over-beat. When ready, the mixture should be thick and glossy. 4. Sift one third of the 115g icing sugar over the mixture, then gently fold it in with a big metal spoon or rubber spatula. Continue to sift and fold in the remaining icing sugar a third at a time. Again, don’t over-mix. The mixture should now look smooth and billowy, almost like a snow drift. 5. Scoop up a heaped dessertspoonful of the mixture. Using another dessertspoon, ease it on to the baking sheet to make an oval shape (pic 3). Or just drop them in rough rounds, if you prefer. Bake for 1 1⁄2-1 3⁄4 hours in a fan oven, 1 1⁄4 hours in a conventional or gas oven, until the meringues sound crisp when tapped underneath and are a pale coffee colour. Leave to cool on the trays or a cooling rack. 6. In a bowl, beat the double cream with the sugar until you get fluffy stiff peaks on the whisk 7. Next add the vanilla essence to your cream and give it a quick mix. 8. Then fold in the berry coulis and crushed meringue. Fold in a few chopped strawberries 9. Add some large pieces of meringue to decorate

Excellence by design – Graham Allen Awards shortlist announced
North Norfolk District Council releases prestigious awards shortlist of 2016 design heroes
The Graham Allen Award is presented annually by NNDC to the project considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning said “This is the 35th year of North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award and the standard of entries has been excellent. The shortlist covers a wide range of very interesting design projects each with strong, specific merits and all a great contribution to our built environment and the awards themselves.”
The shortlisted entries are: • CROMER, Bus Station, Prince of Wales Road - erection of new bus shelter • CROMER, Victoria Heights, Roughton Road - restoration and conversion of former hospital into four houses and 21 flats • EAST RUSTON, Running Hare Barn, Mill Road - restoration and conversion of former threshing barn into holiday let • NORTHREPPS, The Stable Yard, Rectory Lane - restoration and conversion of stable block into new dwelling • PENSTHORPE, Pensthorpe Natural Park, Hootz House - erection of new 300m2 play barn • SHERINGHAM, Sheringham Station, Station Approach - erection of replacement rail station TIC, public conveniences and retail shop • STALHAM, Portalfield - erection of 19 sheltered housing units
Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the awards scheme has recognised a diverse selection of north Norfolk’s finest architecture.
Winners have ranged from the extension to Binham Priory, to the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.
Last year’s overall winner was Manor Farm Barns in The Street, Kettlestone. The barns are on the main entrance to the village and had been lying derelict for some time. The project involved the complete restoration and refurbishment of the barn complex into four new homes. The scheme successfully used traditional materials and to retain the character and original charm of the barns.
The shortlisted projects will now undergo site visits from the judging panel made up of NNDC’s Development Committee and Edward Allen, son of Graham. The award winner, highly commended and commended will then be decided.
A public vote will then be held over the Green Build Weekend 10-11 September to determine the People’s Choice Award.
All awards will be announced at the Graham Allen Awards ceremony on Wednesday 21 September at Oddfellows Hall, Sheringham.
A Norfolk Lane
Wild flowers line the Norfolk lane They glisten with dewdrops after the rain. Red poppies in the wheat stand tall A pheasant gives a mating call. It’s so peaceful in the evening light A blackbird sings – such a delight. Wild roses in abundance grow High in the hedge and trailing low. They sway gently in the breeze Oh dear! Their pollen makes me sneeze. There’s a ‘buzzing’ by the old church wall Bees on the ivy are having a ball. A rabbit hops across my path His large white tail makes me laugh. A kestrel swoops to catch his prey But the little mouse scuttles away. There is much to see in this pretty lane That’s why I come here again and again. Diane Berthelot

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB ‘For ever, for everyone’ - this was Dr Robert Knee’s introduction to his presentation to North Walsham Probus Club members last month.
Most people are probably aware of the National Trust, but it few may be familiar with its origins and the philosophy of the founder members, which was responsible for organization we know today.
Three individuals played a prominent role, namely Octavia Hill, Hardwicke Rawnsley and Sir Robert Hunter, all of whom were born during the early part of the Victorian era. Significantly, this was an age better known for the squalor and deprivation of urban living conditions as the industrial revolution was reaching its peak.
Foremost of these was Octavia Hill, who was born in Wisbech, of parents who were in fairly straightened financial circumstances, and was consequently forced to start work at fourteen. She soon displayed a strong reforming zeal, influenced by Christian principles.
Initially her focus was upon the development of social housing, aided by her friendship with John Ruskin. Her concern that everyone should have access to open spaces followed her involvement with social housing.
Her campaign to restrict the development of suburban woodlands was assisted by Robert Hunter, who was later knighted for his public services. Sir Robert was born in Camberwell and succeeded in gaining a degree. He eventually became articled to a firm of solicitors and was appointed as legal advisor to the Post Office. His legal expertise assisted in the preservation of numerous open spaces including Epping Forest, Berkhamsted, Plumstead, Wimbledon and Tooting commons.

Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, a disciple of John Ruskin, and friend of Jeremy Bentham, was Vicar of Ambleside, and concerned with preserving the Lake District from the rampant intrusion of the railway. This was probably the Trust’s first success.
The National Trust was officially recognized in 1894 and the National Trust Act, 1907 gave the Trust ‘inalienable right to possession’. Probate duty, later known as death duty or inheritance tax, was introduced in 1880 and made the upkeep of former stately homes financially embarrassing.
Currently the Trust owns 350 heritage properties, historic houses, industrial monuments and social history sites. It is one of the largest charities in the UK and relies for income on donations, membership fees and revenue from restaurants and sales of

North Walsham & District Historical Society - Edith Cavell by Rachael Duffield Rachael was dressed in nurse’s uniform of the period, and presented the story accompanied by appropriate pieces of music.
Edith Louisa Cavell was born on 4 December 1865 in Swardeston, Norwich, The eldest of the four children to the Reverend Frederick and Louisa Cavell, she was taught to share with those less fortunate. She was educated at Norwich High School for Girls and after a period as a governess in Brussels, aged 30 she trained as a nurse at the London Hospital and worked in various hospitals in England, including Shoreditch Infirmary. In 1907, she was recruited to be matron of a newly established nursing school, and, launched the nursing journal. One year later, she was training nurses for hospitals, schools, and kindergartens in Belgium. At the outbreak of the First World War, the Red Cross took over her clinic and nursing school. She began sheltering British soldiers and funneling them out of occupied Belgium to the neutral Netherlands. This placed her in violation of German military law, who became increasingly suspicious of her actions, further fuelled by her outspokenness. She was arrested on 3 August 1915 and charged with harboring Allied soldiers. She had been betrayed, and was held in Saint-Gilles prison for ten weeks, the last two of which were spent in solitary confinement. In her court martial she admitted her guilt when she signed a statement the day before the trial. In custody, she was questioned in French, but the session was minuted in German which gave the interrogator the opportunity to misinterpret her answers. Although she may have been misrepresented, she made no attempt to defend herself. The night before her execution, she told, the Anglican chaplain who gave her Holy Communion ‘Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone’. These words are inscribed on her statue in London. Her final words to the German prison chaplain, were recorded, ‘Ask Father Gahan to tell my loved ones that my soul, I believe, is safe, I am glad to die for my country’. Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad, aged 49.
Belgian women immediately buried her body next to the prison. After the war, her body was taken back to Britain for a memorial service at Westminster Abbey and then transferred to Norwich, and laid to rest at Life's Green on the eastern side of the cathedral. Mike Sothcott

Volunteers Needed
After a record year in 2015, the North Norfolk Railway continues to power ahead in 2016.
With a busy schedule of regular service trains and special events on the ever popular “Poppy Line”, the current year is shaping up to be another success.
Behind these achievements lies a dedicated and hard working team of volunteers who support a small number of permanent staff. Many of the Railways visitors are surprised when they learn that the vast majority of roles on the NNR are undertaken by volunteers. Like most heritage railways, the NNR relies heavily on its volunteers and with the continuing expansion of the railway, the need for volunteers to
support it continues to grow.
There are a huge variety of roles available for volunteers from the more traditional ones such as engine driver, guard, signaller and station staff to less obvious but equally important ones such as stewarding the increasingly popular Railway Cottage at Holt - a cottage faithfully converted from an old railway carriage, dressed and furnished just as it would have been in the 1930s. The gardens at the stations are lovingly tendered by volunteers who manage to combine two interests in one.
The NNR is constantly looking for new volunteers and whatever your aspirations or skills, we believe we can find a volunteer role in our team that you will find both rewarding and enjoyable. If you are interested in volunteering on the “Poppy Line”, please contact the NNR at enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk using the heading “Volunteering” in the subject field or telephone on 01263 820800.
North Norfolk businesses best in county at paying their rates
According to a table of council collection rates across Norfolk, North Norfolk District Council collects more than 99% of business rates.
Officers at NNDC have been working hard to ensure collection levels for both business rates and council tax across the district are high and making it as easy as possible for residents to keep up to date with council tax payments.
The table published for the county shows NNDC has the highest collection levels of any Council in Norfolk for non-domestic rates or business rates and had collected an impressive 99.3% for 2015/16.
The table also put North Norfolk District Council second in the county for collection of council tax at 98.6%.
Cllr Wyndham Northam Cabinet Member for financial services said “We do understand there are sometimes occasions when circumstances can change and paying council tax or business rates can drop down people’s priority list. Paying rates and council tax is the right thing to do and is a legal requirement, so the fact NNDC, our businesses and our residents are up at the top of the league table is a super achievement.”
NNDC offers residents and businesses access to ebilling, online services, text alert reminders, Direct Debit over a variety of payment dates, barcoded bills and a 24-7 automated payment line to suit different needs.
To let the council know about a change in circumstances or to discuss a more convenient way of paying your council tax, contact 01263 516071 or ctax@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Thornage Hall provides supported living accommodation and work-based learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties in the beautiful surroundings of a 70 acre biodynamic farm.
From 11.30am to 4pm on Sunday 4 September, this unique community will open its doors to the public, providing an opportunity for tenants to celebrate all that they have achieved through the year and for the general public to get a taste of their work.
A cooking demonstration by Richard Bainbridge of Benedict's restaurant and Thornage Hall's very own Kelby Light will showcase main ingredients tended and grown by tenants and work-based learners at Thornage Hall. All ingredients will be sourced from within a 20 mile radius of Thornage. The demonstration will take place between 2pm and 3pm and one lucky bidder will get the once in a lifetime chance to eat this fine three course meal prepared by the two chefs.
Richard Bainbridge has been delighted to champion Thornage produce at his British Bistro in Norwich which opened in June last year; ‘The vegetables enjoy the finest provenance you could expect locally, combining a sound understanding of biodynamic principles with learning opportunities for the wider community’.
Alison Hall, Director of Thornage Hall, is keen to share the work of the organisation with the wider community; ‘I am delighted to be opening the doors here at Thornage and allowing the wider community an opportunity to come and have a closer look at what we do. Fundamental to our Steiner based ethos is the principle that every individual has unique skills, our role is to celebrate these whilst at the same time providing opportunities to enhance and develop new ones’.
Other highlights on offer for visitors to the fair include: • Dog show, bring your pet and enter for various awards categories

Invitation to Merchant Navy Day at North Norfolk District Council headquarters Red Ensign will be raised
Anyone with connections to the Merchant Navy, including veterans and those currently serving, are being invited to NNDC's Cromer headquarters on 3 September for a flag hoisting ceremony of the Red Ensign.
The event will recognise the work of members of the Merchant Navy, including their role in the two world wars and our continuing reliance on modern day merchant seafarers who bring in 95% of our imports including half of the food we eat.
Local dignitaries and youth groups with sea connections will be invited, but there is also a general invitation to all who have connections to the Merchant Navy.
People attending are asked to arrive at the Holt Road offices at 10.45am for an 11am start. A small reception will follow the hoisting of the Red Ensign, which is the UK Merchant Navy's official flag.
The event will be hosted by North Norfolk District Council Chairman John Lee, who has many links with the sea as a working crab fisherman who comes from a family line of sea fishermen and a long heritage with the RNLI.
"Both Cromer and North Norfolk as a whole have a very long and close relationship with the sea and with people who work on or in the sea, whose efforts can sometimes go unrecognised," said Cllr Lee.
"The opportunity to show our respect for a hard working group of people who operate in a difficult environment for all of our benefit is very welcome."

Happisburgh Lifeboat Day & Fete
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have been working hard to organise this year’s Lifeboat Day & Fete.
The sun was shining, even though the wind was blowing. Hundreds of people turned out to support the Station. They enjoyed hog roast, a bar, games, tombolas and much, much more. They also had the opportunity to look over the Station’s two lifeboats and talk to the crew and RNLI Lifeguards and Coastguards. They were entertained by the Sheringham Shantymen. At 2pm both the Station’s lifeboats launched to put on a display for the crowds – unfortunately this was cut short due to the Coastguard Helicopter being diverted to an
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action for the second time in two days last month when at 4:12pm the pagers went off asking for the launch of the Atlantic lifeboat.
Humber Coastguard had received reports that two divers were overdue surfacing 12 miles off the coast of Happisburgh.
The crew quickly assembled and prepared the Station’s Atlantic 75, Joan Mary, for launch with Cubitt Siely at the helm with crew of Charlotte Siely and Will Baker, who were both involved in the previous day’s dramatic rescue at Sea Palling.
The boat was about to enter the water when the crew were informed by Humber Coastguard that both divers had surfaced and were well and did not need our services.
incident near Cromer. The two boats and RNLI Lifeguards put on a display for the public on the beach.
This year’s event was well attended and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all who attended and all our volunteers who made the day possible, which has enabled us to raise £6,000 for the RNLI over a period of just 4 hours.
At 4.30pm, as everybody was starting to clear up after the Fete, the Station was contacted by Humber Coastguard, with reports of an airbed floating out to see off Waxham. The Station’s Atlantic lifeboat, Joan Mary, launched with Cubitt Siely as helm, Christian Larter and Dave Cato as crew. They proceeded to Waxham, where they found an empty airbed 1½ miles off the coast. They commenced a search of the area and after an hour found nothing and as no one had been reported missing, the Coastguard stood the lifeboat down. They returned to Station at 6.30pm.
People should be aware of the dangers of inflatables, especially with offshore winds. All inflatables should be tethered to the beach and if you should lose an inflatable it is advisable to notify the Coastguard with a good description and location of where you lost it.
The boat was then returned to the boathouse ready for service again.
Interested in becoming a crew member?
The charity welcomes people from all walks of life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.
Happisburgh RNLI is always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello.
Volunteers meet first third Sunday mornings at 8am (each month) and second and fourth Tuesday evenings at 7pm (each month) for their training exercises.

About With Friends Allotment Opening
East Runton Parish Councillors, a District Councillor and church officials were amongst those who joined members, staff and volunteers from About with Friends when they opened their new allotment on Monday 1 August.
The organisation, who have gardening teams on their Workskills programme for adults with learning disabilities, took over a rundown allotment plot in East Runton earlier this year. Squeezing in visits between their regular, commercial customers, the teams have transformed the wasteland into a

beautiful space brimming with vegetables and fruits. The product, which will be used by the group’s Catering team and Community Cafe was ceremonially pulled by some of the community dignitaries present at the opening with the gardeners moving in to harvest the rest once they left.
CEO Helen Dalton-Hare and Development Manager Steve Smith spoke at the opening and emphasised the need for more volunteers and gardening equipment to help the group develop. Helen also noted that they were looking for local ‘Weekend Quail-Sitters’ to check for some quails they would like to keep

on the plot.
About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities the chance to lead the lives they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued part of society while enjoying life to the full.
Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family team By Neale Grearson, Partner and Head of the Family Department Q. If I'm talking about my provisions in a divorce in a court, can it be publicly reported in a newspaper?
A. It is very unusual for this to happen. Proceedings "in chambers" are private unless the Court allows reporting.
Q. How can I ensure I get my fair share in a divorce?
A. Make sure you see a specialist family Solicitor who is part of Resolution. Obtaining a divorce settlement in the right terms is vital and it is important that you have the right person or people working with you. There is only one "bite of the cherry" so getting this right is very important.
Q. Why should I use a solicitor instead of an online divorce service?
A. Most Solicitors will be able to give you a tailored service that is personalised to you and you have the reassurance of being able to ask questions. Many Solicitors will offer a fixed fee for an actual divorce which may be higher than the cost of an online divorce
Q. How do I ensure my children get what I want them to get following my divorce? How do I protect what they're entitled to?
A. When a divorce takes place the needs of children are a vital priority. The Family Court will take into account those needs but after a financial settlement is concluded it is left to individual parents to make sure they provide for the children and ensure they get what they want them to have following the divorce. Complications in particular arise when parents form new relationships and have children from that new relationship or marriage. The starting point is making a Will to have provision for your children. Also if investing money in property with another person (e.g. a new partner or new spouse) it is important to look at things like Declarations of Trust dealing with joint ownership as new relationships do not always work and that could mean that a new partner might be entitled to a share in property that you would want your children to have had. If you live with a new partner having a Cohabitation Agreement would be advisable but most importantly if you intend to remarry a Pre-Nuptial Agreement could be essential. This could set out that you wish to "ring fence" any assets that you receive from your divorce that you wish to ensure your children benefit from and not your new spouse or his/her children or family.
Q. Will I have to go to court to finalise my divorce?
A. The procedure for an actual divorce is straightforward so long as the husband and wife agree and co-operate. It is now usually unnecessary to attend Court at all. However if there is a disagreement over finances or your children a Hearing might be necessary to deal with those aspects.
service but you need to decide what type of service you want and what is included (or not included) in the online divorce service.

WELFARE VET CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF RESCUING HORSES Redwings Horse Sanctuary marks Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic de Brauwere’s 25th anniversary at the charity.
It was on Wednesday 28August 1991 that the newly qualified veterinary surgeon Nic de Brauwere joined Redwings Horse Sanctuary. Nic graduated from Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa earlier that year and brought to the Sanctuary unparalleled compassion and insight (as well as a curious penchant for fountain pens!). It is this understanding and skill that has seen Nic provide clinical care, herd health management, and round up and rescue expertise to both Redwings and fellow welfare organisations for the past 25 years. Indeed, as testament to Nic’s
extensive experience working in the field of equine welfare, in 2009 he was elected to be Chairman of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) – an umbrella organisation for equine rescue centres and sanctuaries across the UK and a role he fulfils alongside heading up Redwings’ welfare and behaviour teams.
As Head of Welfare and Behaviour, Nic’s knowledge is fundamental to Redwings’ rescue work, in particular specialising in the rounding-up and subsequent rehabilitation and long-term care of feral, unhandled or mistreated horses, and it is his expertise in this field that has spearheaded Redwings’ approach to not only equine health and welfare but equine behaviour and training too. Colleague and fellow veterinary surgeon Roxane Kirton explains:
“Nic has dedicated his career to the promotion and advancement of horse welfare. He has led the development of our behaviour programme at Redwings because he has the vision and conviction to drive forward change and make things happen, while always being open-minded and reflective of ways in which we can improve the lives of our horses. “I – and his whole team – are so proud to work alongside Nic and to be part of such a dynamic and forward-thinking department, plus his brilliant sense of humour and vivid shirt collection ensures there is never a dull day!”
Nic has also been involved in consultations on many areas of animal welfare policy; most notably he worked with the Welsh Government between 2012 and 2014 to help draft the Control of Horses (Wales) Act, which became law in 2014 and helped energise the commitment to an English equivalent that came into force the following year. However, it is his unwavering commitment and passion that those who work and have worked with Nic comment on most frequently. Nic has headed up several high profile rescue operations – including the notorious Spindle Farm in Amersham in 2008 where over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys were rescued over a gruelling 24-hour period – and he regularly lends his experience as an expert witness in prosecution cases.

Indeed, even those who are not fortunate enough to work alongside Nic shoulderto-shoulder in rescuing horses in need, cannot help but be inspired during his retelling of what he has experienced as a frequent event speaker. His compassion is tangible, and at a recent event both he and the whole audience were moved to tears while reflecting on Redwings’ largest ever rescue operation in 2013 where over 400 horses were found in South Wales in some of the most horrific scenes ever witnessed by the charity.
Commenting on Nic’s 25 years at Redwings, Chief Executive Lynn Cutress said “Nic has been instrumental in our landmark achievements as a charity and this is testament to his 25-year commitment to Redwings and helping horses in need. “Both within our own charity and in his partnership working with our fellow animal welfare organisations and key partners like local authorities and emergency services, Nic’s drive and determination are inspirational and demonstrate that when working together we can achieve the unachievable – from the Amersham rescue to the phenomenal work in Wales. When the chips are down for horses in dire need, I always know Nic and his team will deliver.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We have recently had several calls from people whose cat has gone missing and we always try to offer advice depending on the individual situation. Although not all cats get reunited with their owners, a high proportion are. We will always suggest that the owner contacts local vets to ensure they are aware of the situation and also to ask neighbours to check in their garages and sheds. Cats are very curious, will sneak in to have a look round, and may decide ‘this looks a nice place to have a little nap’. As the neighbours may not have reason to go into these buildings every day, it is a good starting point. We have on many occasions been advised that the cat has turned up after a few days, very hungry and thirsty and it is obvious that it has been shut in somewhere. However, it is worth noting that a nervous or timid cat will not immediately come out of its hiding place, so all nooks and crannies need to be checked.
There are also instances where a timid cat, even having been in its new home for some time, will decide not to come in for various reasons. Stephanie recently had a call about such a cat. The owner had seen it in the vicinity but could not entice it indoors. He borrowed one of our traps, placed some nice smelly food inside and within 24 hours the cat was back in its home, being made a great fuss of and cuddling up on her owners lap.

Working in a veterinary practice means we are fortunate to see unusual and often remarkable things on a fairly regular basis, but it is not every day that patients make the national news! For those who haven’t heard about Bobby Phillips, he is the young spaniel pictured who recently fell down an 82 foot well whilst out on a walk. Even more amazing than surviving the fall was that the incident happened when he went missing on a walk and he wasn’t found for nearly two weeks! During that time it is thought he survived by eating soil and licking condensation from the sides of the well. He was finally rescued by a specialist search and rescue team when a farmer heard his frantic yelps.

Although not all cats are reunited with Ditty Dotty, one of the younger their owners (and sometimes it can be cats in care years before this happens, as we know from past experience) a good few are. Some may have been unfortunate and been in an accident and some, having got lost, may have turned up some distance away as “a stray”. If you do see an unfamiliar cat in your garden please bear in mind it may be someone else’s cat and they will be desperate to be reunited with it. Your first course action should be to contact local vets to see if any are missing which fit the cat’s description and to get the cat checked to see if it is micro chipped. That way, more cats could be reunited with their owner.

know the way home. In these instances we would suggest the owner advises their neighbour of the situation and ask them to let them know if they see the cat in question. Once the cat has been spotted, the owner can try to entice it back home. If this does not work, we will gladly lend a trap to help reunite it with its owner. Although you may catch another cat (or even a hedgehog) before getting the ‘right cat’, this is often successful.
BED MAX
Miraculously when we examined him at the vets the following day he had lost 1.5kg in weight, but was otherwise unscathed. So we were somewhat surprised to see him back at the surgery 6 weeks later. On this occasion he had a very large, firm swelling under his tummy that was causing him some discomfort. There was no obvious reason for the mass, which had appeared very suddenly, so we booked Bobby in for a scan. The scan showed a foreign body deep within his abdominal muscle layers so we sedated him to investigate further. Surgery revealed a large grass seed that was migrating through the muscle and very close to entering his abdominal cavity where it would almost certainly have caused serious problems. We can’t be sure whether this was related in any way to his adventure down the well, but it is safe to say he is a very lucky dog to have come through both episodes without any problems. Hopefully now he’ll cause his owners a little less stress, for a while at least! Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Vets

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THYME
in ‘knocking things up’ cheaply and easily. At this time Geoff was actively involved in the campaign to stop the destruction of the limestone pavements – those unique habitats for plants, which were being rapidly depleted to provide the limestone for rock gardens.
A close up of Thymus 'Creeping Red'
It is hard to believe that it is 20 years since the sudden death of Geoff Hamilton, who died from a heart attack on a charity bike ride in the Brecon Beacons in 1996. He was buried, in his boots and jeans, on what would have been his 60th birthday.
Geoff’s impact was enormous - his down to earth and cost conscious approach turned many people onto gardening. Memorable amongst his projects were the £2-a-week garden in 1983, when he set himself a challenge. Could he maintain and improve a small garden roughly 10 x 14m with a lawn, borders, some fruit and vegetables and a small unheated greenhouse on just £2 a week? A second favourite with Gardeners’ World viewers was his creation of artificial rocks. This project, which had some of his nearest and dearest convinced that he had finally flipped, brought together two important strands in his work – his concern for the environment and his delight
I also remember the raised wooden bed he built to hold thyme plants. His thymes table! As a little tribute to Geoff I have planted an old tin bath with a selection of these herbs. The plants were bought from Norfolk Herbs at the Felbrigg Hall Chilli Festival. This is a nursery specialising in the growing of culinary, medicinal and aromatic herb plants based at Dillington near Gressenhall in Dereham.

have culinary and medicinal properties. All species of thyme contain the volatile oil, thymol, which is an antiseptic and perhaps it was some inkling of this quality which led to the herb being a key ingredient in judges’ posies and the Sovereign’s Maundy Thursday posy to give the carriers some protection from the infectious diseases of the poor.
In the Western Isles of Scotland wild thyme was put under the pillow or drunk as a tea to prevent nightmares or otherwise give a restful sleep. In areas where lavender would not grow well, women used flowering sprigs of thyme to scent their clothes, handkerchiefs and household linen.
There are hundreds of species and varieties to choose from and I picked Creeping Lemon, Pink Ripple, Golden Thyme, Creeping Red, Harlington Silver and Silver King. All are hardy if grown in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil in full sun. After flowering, vigorous growth will be cut back to maintain compactness.
Thymes are easily propagated either from seed sown in early spring or by cuttings. Divide plants in Spring, insert semi-ripe cuttings in mid or late Summer or softwood cuttings in early Summer. Separate rooted stem sections in Spring or Summer, and pot on until established.
Bees love thyme flowers and the plants also

Cromer gears up for World Pier Crabbing Championships and auction of 102 dinky beach huts
This August Bank Holiday Cromer will welcome the return of the World Pier Crabbing Championships where crowds of people will line the length of the pier to vie for the coveted title.
On the same day, 102 dinky beach huts will be displayed on the pier forecourt before they are auctioned off to the highest bidder for charity.
The two annual events, which will be held on Sunday, 28 August are organised by the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival and will be joined by an array of local craft stalls along the promenade. Throughout the summer, the dinky beach huts have been adorning shop windows, hotels, pubs and guesthouses across north Norfolk.
Decorated by over 400 local people, have been on display as part of the Festival’s annual art trail.
From a boathouse complete with slipway and lifeboat to a bookshop complete with replica newspapers and a potting shed filled with flowers to a fully operational Moulin Rouge, the
spectacular huts have collectively taken more than 2,000 hours to decorate.
Lining the pier forecourt, the spectacular huts will be auctioned off by master auctioneer Martyn Fox, who has presided over the last six festival auctions which have raised more than £33,000 for local good causes.
The auction, which has become a staple event for the festival, will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the huts displayed together.
The 102 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local people, include huts decorated by artists Dianne Lindsay, Samuel Thomas and Lizzie Riches as well as schools and community groups.
The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of spotting all the huts since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky huts. Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “hundreds of visitors and local families have
followed the Beach Hut Art Trail through the season, the auction is your chance to bid for your favourite and is the climax to this year’s festival which has proved the most popular yet. We hope that locals and visitors alike will spend the day with us in Cromer on 28 August and take part in the Crabbing Championships before attending and bidding at the Auction.” For the first time, people who are unable to attend the auction will be able to send in a sealed bid to festival organisers in advance.
For more information and to download a sealed bid registration form visit www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Iron Man Adventure by Joel Lodge
My Dad, Andrew Lodge, is an employee of Shell and over the past couple of years he has been doing triathlons around North Norfolk and he has also recently taken part in the Staffordshire half Iron Man in order to prepare himself for his biggest challenge yet, the Iron Man event in Maastricht. He started off doing triathlons to start being more active and too get into better shape, which he has been successful in doing after losing four stone over the past few years. Doing these triathlons has given him a new hobby to partake in and something that he can challenge himself to do.
On the 1st of August 2016, my Dad completed his first Iron Man in the Dutch town of Maastricht. After months and months of preparation, with early morning cycles, running and lake swimming to prepare him for the event which tests every competitor to the absolute limit.
The Iron Man course in Maastricht consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.2km run (a marathon). The event started at around seven in the morning and there was a cut off time in the evening, which was around midnight, meaning that anyone who finished after the designated cut off time unfortunately wouldn’t be counted as an Iron Man which would be absolutely devastating for someone who would’ve spent over 16 hours competing in the event, as well as countless hours of training for the event for it to all come too nothing.
Luckily after all my Dad’s hard work and dedication he managed to complete the Iron Man within the time bracket which is a fantastic achievement and one of which I am very proud of him for doing and completing, considering the fact he only started doing triathlons a couple of years ago.

Norwich City Transfer Roundup and first game thoughts by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
So far in the transfer window, Norwich have been quieter than perhaps expected, however since the last transfer roundup Norwich have made two further signings in the form of attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard and goalkeeper Paul Jones to provide competition for McGovern and John Ruddy. As far as departures are concerned, Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has left Norwich for an undisclosed fee to go back to Holland to play for Vitesse Arnhem, meanwhile, Declan Rudd has gone on a season long loan to League One side Charlton which seems like a step back in terms of his development.
Norwich also missed out on the signing of Ross McCormack as he ended up at Aston
Villa after Norwich were unable to salvage a deal with Fulham.
Norwich kicked off their Championship campaign against Blackburn away from home as they showed their dominance in a 4-1 win, blowing Blackburn away with attacking quality whilst remaining resilient at the back however they were unable to keep a clean sheet. Norwich started off brightly as Jacob Murphy scored one of the goals of the day with a 25 yard rocket in the top right corner to give City an early lead, shortly after Murphy’s screamer, Hoolahan doubled the Canaries lead with a wonderful solo goal proving that he still has it even at the age of 34. In the 25th minute Cameron Jerome slotted home from Ivo Pinto’s cross as his shot deflected in off Constitution Motors of Constitution Hill, Norwich has provided James Brooks, North Walsham's Head of Rugby, with a Series 5 Mitsubishi L200 as part of a sponsorship deal Managing Director Ian Coates is pictured handing over the keys. The Club's Marketing Director Bruce Rossi, also pictured, commented "we are thrilled to welcome Constitution Motors as a new sponsor and look forward to developing a mutually beneficial relationship. As the leading club in Norfolk, and one of East Anglia's premier teams, we enjoy fantastic support from many local businesses for which we are very grateful. I am always pleased to hear from businesses wishing to be associated with the club - we offer a range of opportunities suitable for
The Youth and Minis begin their season at Scottow on Sunday 4 September at 10am.
Newcomers are welcome, even if they have never played before - just turn up. Subscriptions are not payable for four weeks, giving newcomers ample opportunity to check that they enjoy rugby. There are teams from under 6 to under 18, each with a qualified coach. Travelling for the Minis is restricted to Norfolk, whereas the Youth sides (under 13s plus) occasionally go further afield.

Blackburn goalkeeper Jason Steele.
Norwich were the 3-0 victors at the break.
They carried on where they left off in the second half as Steven Naismith scored with a low-drilled finish into the bottom right corner after a sublime nutmeg from Wes Hoolahan who was a menace to the Blackburn defence all game.
Blackburn got a consolation goal from an Anthony Stokes after some poor marking from the Norwich defence.
Overall it was a good result for the Canaries as they start the season off at the top of the table and long may it continue!
