ALICIA’S STEPS
The determination of terminally-ill lady from North Walsham provides access for young and old.
On 9 September Alicia Elliott (nee Webber and formerly Jenner), 77, from North Walsham realised her ambition to ensure visitors have access to the Chieftain and Centurion Main Battle Tanks at the Norfolk Tank Museum.
The unveiling of ‘Alicia's Steps’, a double platform , will allow members of the public who visit the Museum to have the chance to get inside the tanks on display, including a majestic Chieftan, and get the maximum enjoyment from them.

Continued from front cover... The unveiling will be the culmination of months of hard work and fundraising by Alicia and her family and friends. Although now very weak from treatment for inoperable cancer, Alicia was determined to be there as the platform is one of her legacies. Alicia will be accompanied at the opening ceremony by former British Army Chief of the General Staff, General The Lord Dannatt GCB, CBE, MC, DL, who learned of the efforts of Alicia and her family. Richard Dannatt, as a Patron of the museum, will be alongside Alicia as she cuts the ribbon during the ceremony. Alicia will also be accompanied by her entire family, the owners and volunteers of the Norfolk Tank Museum, and friends who have all contributed towards the fundraising efforts to make her wish a reality.
“Alicia visited the museum in February 2016 to begin her ‘bucket list’, top of which was a lifelong ambition to ride in a tank. She did so with aplomb, but she discovered that getting into the vehicle was not a simple task, particularly for those with physical impairments. We were all so moved by her enthusiasm and determination to fulfil her dream of getting in the tank and actually driving it, that with the physical assistance of three of our staff we ensured she got her wish!
On that day Alicia realised the benefits of access to these incredible machines, for everyone but particularly for former service men and women for whom revisiting the vehicles they have previously operated in can be part of a healing process, such as in PTSD cases” says Stephen MacHaye, Chairman of the Norfolk Tank Museum.
Alicia's Steps will carry a simple inscription, "In memory of a beautiful and kind lady who never gave up her own battle, Love and Laughter XXX Forever in our Hearts." The ‘Love Butterfly’, also engraved, will be for people to touch and send kisses to a loved lost one.

Age is Just a Number: Let’s celebrate 1 October will be the United Nations Day of the Elder Person. To recognise and celebrate the contribution of older people, we have joined together to put on a Free Fun Day.
North Norfolk Older People’s Forum, Age Concern North Norfolk, and the National Pensioners Convention and partners aim to make it an extra special event that will run over the course of the day at Sheringham Community Centre between 10am and 3pm. There will be lots to enjoy in the shape of exercise workshops run by Excel 2000, dance instruction and demonstrations by the Fitness League, a Sing-a-long and a local choir with plenty of opportunity for you to get involved and join in.
As well as all this, there will be fun and games for all the family to enjoy and the obligatory raffle. Refreshments, kindly sponsored by McCarthy and Stone, include tea, cake, sandwiches and a light lunch. (subject to availability)
For those wanting to share concerns or learn more about local groups and services, many organisations have volunteered their time to provide information stands with the opportunity of one to one support sessions. These include Norfolk Carers, Sheringham Patient Participation Group, Anglia Region Pensioners Association, Age Concern North Norfolk, Excel 2000 and The Older Peoples Forum. Everyone involved would love to see you there on the day to help promote our aim of proving age is just a number and that Norfolk leads the way in uniting different generations.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
On Thursday 4 August the Club’s meeting was an outing to the Tea Rooms at Hadfield Garden Centre, where members sat down to a lovely cream tea of assorted sandwiches, scones and cream.
Members also took the opportunity to look round the Garden Centre and buy some plants. This is the second year that the Club has taken its members to the Garden Centre and it is an outing loved by all. We would like to thank the staff at the Tea Rooms for their kind hospitality and fabulous food. Our July meeting was held at the Community Centre and was the Club’s Annual Quiz, supported by members of the committee on each table to help those with eyesight difficulties. When the Quiz was finished there were strawberry cream teas donated by two of the committee. The Club tries very hard to give members a good afternoon, whether it is at the Community Centre or on an outing. The seven strong committee works very hard throughout the year to keep the Club, which was formed in 1947, going. We are still looking for new members to join the Club - if you are interested in joining please do come along to the Community Centre on the first Thursday of every month and give it a go.
Norman Lamb demands answers over HSBC bank closure in North Walsham North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has written to the Chief Executive of HSBC Bank following the announcement of the planned closure of the bank’s branch in North Walsham.
“Losing HSBC from North Walsham would be a real blow. Hard on the heels of bank closures in Stalham, I am really worried that banks are not taking the needs of communities in rural Norfolk into account when they make these decisions. We need a full explanation of how they reached this decision,” says Mr Lamb. Mr Lamb has also written to the government’s ‘Minister for High Streets’ to seek reassurances that banks will be held to account for decisions about services provided in market towns like North Walsham.

Possibly one of the most revealing comments in Mark Little’s presentation on child slavery last month was that a child born into slavery in the American Deep South about 150 years ago, was probably better treated than many of the children involved in recent child trafficking cases in the UK. In the former case, the owner’s motives were almost certainly more economic than humanitarian since a slave in Alabama during the mid nineteenth century was the equivalent of about £4,000, while children may be passed on for less than £20 in modern Britain. Slavery has several definitions but is generally accepted as ‘being owned by another, and or, being forced to work for little or no wages’. Article 4 of the Human Rights Act, 1998, prohibits an individual being held in servitude, or made to do forced labour. It is estimated that there are about 46 million people enslaved in the world, a substantial proportion being children as young as three or four, passed through traffickers as a commodity, to satisfy the demand of the sex trade. Apart from the sex trade, child labour is used extensively in India in brick kilns, clothing and glass factories. Carpet manufacture is an industry in which boys are especially useful, because their fingers can handle the threads more adeptly.
An example of India’s problem was illustrated by Mark when he described the plight of Ashraf, whom he met on a visit to India. Ashraf had escaped from his master, bearing marks of various beatings. He is presently unable to return home for fear that he may be killed. Much of India’s problem is at least as much cultural as it is economic. The Indian government has passed legislation prohibiting slavery but finds difficulty in obtaining the necessary ratification. Unfortunately, the problem also exists in the UK where there are estimated to be at least ten to thirteen thousand children in a similar plight, of which recent events in Rotherham and Rochdale are examples. Unlike India, legislation in this country is clear and the authorities do not have any conflict of interest. One means by which ordinary people can express their concern is by boycotting goods, which are not subject to ethical audits to eliminate slave made goods

Sheringham Shantymen & Keith Skipper on Cromer Pier The Sheringham Shantymen are pleased to announce that they will be performing at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on Sunday 6 November for their last public performance of 2016. To make this yet another very special occasion, the Sheringham men have invited Cromer resident and well known raconteur Mr Keith Skipper as their very special guest.
Musical Director Mr Brian Farrow said “Following on from last year when, after much initial turbulent debate an amicable relationship was finally established, we thought it would make perfect sense to revisit this union of crab & lobster.”
The Chairman of the Shantymen Mr Bob Hawkins said “We are very much looking forward to working with Keith Skipper again where we will be able to witness first hand his particular brand of wonderful Norfolk squit”
With regard to their November performance on the Pier, Booking Secretary Chris Dolby said “Once again I know the lads are looking forward to performing at the Pier Pavilion Theatre where we have always been made to feel very at home by the Pier staff and the wonderful theatre audiences.”
This year, the Shantymen will be donating all of the profits from the show, to be split evenly, between the Cromer & Sheringham Lifeboats.
Autumn
There's a nip in the air, autumn is here. The countryside is beautiful at this time of year. Sunlight filters through the trees, making everywhere so bright, I watch the river sparkle, such a magical sight. I see a red squirrel whizzing up a tree, the speed that he is moving quite surprises me. Gold and brown leaves spiral down and crackle where I tread, the colours are amazing, sometimes the leaves are red. My spirits are lifted at the colours that I see, I long for days like this, they give such joy to me. Diane Berthelot

From Lunch to Brunch
Aylsham Food Festival’s three days of foodie fun From lunch on its first day to brunch on its last, Aylsham Food Festival 2016, running from Friday 30 September to Sunday 2 October and organised by Slow Food Aylsham, has something for all foodies. Before the weekend’s activities, Aylsham Library will be hosting a food related talk, ‘Wild Food from the Hedgerow’ with tickets at just ÂŁ3 available from the Library.
The town’s weekly Country Market, from 8.30am to midday in the Town Hall on Friday 30 September will have loads of lovely tasters from their usual variety of sweet and savoury foods, plus a prize draw to win a very special decorated Festival Cake. After the Market has closed, the Parish Church will host a ‘Harvest Lunch’ while that evening will see the High School’s Festival Gala Dinner. Five courses, prepared cooked and served by over 100 students, will be enjoyed by 120 diners in what is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the 3-day Festival. Saturday’s events start with Aylsham’s monthly Farmers Market, including guest stalls, in the Market Place. The Market will run from 8.30am to 2pm. Also during the morning, the Town Hall will see top local chefs, plus experts from Aylsham-based Coxfords Butchers, stage a series of cookery and butchery demonstrations. The demonstrations will be organised on a ‘drop-in’ basis, starting at 10am, and are completely free. Entertaining the crowds outside will be the Juggling Chef, Gordon Blur, who proved a
massive hit at the 2015 Festival. Meanwhile, you will have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw for a fabulous hamper which will include a set of saucepans. The hamper is sponsored by Neff and local electrical retailer J B Postle. Saturday evening’s entertainment comes in the form of a wine tasting at Aylsham Heritage Centre, where Brian Sullivan from Harper Wells in Eaton will introduce a number of wines from the company’s extensive selection. Aylsham Food Festival 2016’s final event will be the Big Slow Brunch in the Town Hall on Sunday 2nd October. Very much a family affair, the Brunch will run from 10.30am to 1pm with continuous service. Croissants, preserves, bread, fruit juice, muesli and of course, the ‘Full English’ will be on a menu cooked and served by members of Slow Food Aylsham.
Tickets for the Brunch, at ÂŁ7, and for the Gala Dinner (ÂŁ20) can be purchased by phoning 07519 361812 or from two shops in Aylsham: Barnwells Newsagents and Carousel Chocolates. If you would like to go to the Wine Tasting, tickets for that event are available online at www.aylshamheritage.com Aylsham Food Festival is supported by Woodforde’s Brewery and Broadland District Council. Councillor Stuart Clancy, portfolio holder for economic development for the Council, said: “We are pleased to be able to support the Festival through a Community Activities Grant. Our ambition for economic
success includes creating vibrant, engaged communities in Broadland. Through our grants programme we are helping local groups and organisations deliver projects and activities that build stronger and more cohesive communities.

FALCON Concerts
The 2016 FALCON Concerts programme is coming to an end for another year in October but rest assured they will be back. Held quarterly at St Andrews Church in Holt they are arranged to help raise funds for FALCON (the North Norfolk based arts initiative Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) and St Andrew's Church Development Fund. Performers once again are drawn from the pool of young professionals, all ex-pupils from the Purcell School (an international school for young musicians of exceptional talent), who very generously come for expenses only.
Garden Maintenance? Having a problem?
This year saw a wonderful range of concerts on offer, including, for the first time, a Chamber Orchestra concert, in early July, conducted by the internationally acclaimed conductor Peter Stark. This concert is part of an exciting and ambitious School’s Concert project which included a wider programme of related events and activities – composition workshops, children’s art and poetry workshops, exhibitions and competitions, visits to their local libraries all on the theme of ‘Carnival of the Animals’. All of which were developed in partnership with Holt Festival and 5 local Primary School’s (Langham, Holt, Gresham Village, Roughton and The Belfry in Overstrand), the North Norfolk Library Service, the acclaimed local poet and prize winning children’s author Kevin Crossley-Holland, and St. Andrews Church.
We’ll get it done! Norfolk Landscape Gardeners The next concert is on Saturday 15 October, at 6.30pm when Francina Moll

Salord and Margalida Moll Salord come to St Andrews Church in Holt. As many already know, the performances can be truly breath-taking, and we are, as always, confident you won't be disappointed…the next concert promises to be no exception.
We look www.norfolklandscapegardeners.co.uk forward to seeing everyone again in 2017 if not before. As usual pre-concert drinks will be available, as well as during the interval.
The Griffon has landed A new wood sculpture by talented local Artist, Luke Chapman, arrived at Paston Sixth Form College earlier this month.
The sculpture was commissioned by the Student Executive to celebrate 30 years of the founding of the Sixth Form College and the opening of the new Griffon Theatre. The students used donations kindly made by Old Pastonians and Paston College Foundation members.
The students ran a competition to design the sculpture and the Griffon was the most popular choice. Students worked with Luke Chapman to improve the design including the fine detail of the work. After a number of months, Luke produced the stunning Griffon sculpture.
The sculpture’s distinctive red colour comes from sourcing a Giant Sequoia Wellingtonia Redwood for the piece. This was sourced ecologically from an Estate in Norfolk, after recent storms blew the tree down.
Although this tree is not the tallest in the world, it is the largest by volume reaching up to 95m high. The trees were introduced to Britain in 1853 and were named Wellingtonia after the recently deceased Duke of Wellington. Luke worked on the sculpture in his studio in Matlaske, Norfolk.
Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “This is an amazing sculpture and brilliant way to commemorate the Sixth Form College and the new Theatre. Luke is an amazing artist and we are all extremely proud of what has been achieved”. Lewis Millard Student Executive President said “It was a brilliant idea by the Student Executive to commission the sculpture. Luke is very talented and we are pleased with the final result.”

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…’
We may only be only just past the Summer Bank Holiday, but attention is already turning to Christmas!
Whilst, for many, this is will be something to look forward to, Voluntary Norfolk is highlighting the plight of those for whom the prospect of the festive season may be a less happy occasion, and encouraging people across North Norfolk and Broadland to become part of the solution!
‘Christmas is often the focal point for many people experiencing loneliness’, according to Jonny Wood and Natalie Hickman, Voluntary Norfolk’s co-ordinators in North Norfolk, ‘but it is a year-round problem. Nowadays, when preparations for Christmas seem to begin

even before summer has ended, this just underlines people’s sense of loneliness as they contemplate the likelihood of spending autumn and winter alone’.
Jonny and Natalie run the North Norfolk Health Volunteers scheme, a befriending service run in partnership with North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which links volunteers with people who are experiencing long term health conditions which leave them socially isolated and less able to participate in their local community. The most popular activity is a simple coffee and chat, but, depending on what volunteers wish to offer, it could involve a short walk, a game or craft activity, a quick hand with something in the house or garden or even a short trip out in the car.
better! ‘Our enrolment and induction process means it takes a little time before we can introduce a new volunteer to someone. If, for instance, a new enquirer contacts us in early December, we may not be able to get them introduced before Christmas. We are encouraging people to think about getting involved now so that volunteers can get started well before the clocks go back and the festive season takes over!

Twinning Visit
North Walsham Town Twinning Association were once again in Friesenried, Germany for a six day visit in July. To be expected, the Brexit vote was a topic for discussion but we were able to reassure our friends that the friendship between our two communities would not change. This was borne out by us celebrating our official 25th anniversary since the signing of the Twinning Charters but as we know our partnership goes back 35 years. As ever, on arrival we were met by the Blöcktach brass band outside the Community Centre and we enjoyed their music before going inside for a grand welcome buffet and speeches. We all met our hosts, some for the first time, and a very social time was had by all. After our days travelling, the bedroom was a welcome sight. (I must be getting older!)
The next few days saw the visit programme kick off and we enjoyed a visit to the Isergebirgs museum in Neugablonz near Friesenried and learned about the history of the area especially how the refugees after the war were settled. For me, a fascinating story which was added to as I had a long talk with our guide and heard about his experiences. The next day we visited Linau on Lake Constance for a guided tour and free time. Sunday was a free day to experience what our hosts had organised, in my case a ‘few’ good walks in boiling conditions so the beer afterwards was very welcome.
Our last full day took us to Seeg to see how honey is produced and the ways that it is utilised in food and various drinks. The samples were all consumed with gusto. Our farewell evening followed and on Tuesday, on our way to the airport, we visited some highpoints in Munich. To mark the 25th anniversary, the Friesenrieders had pulled out all of the stops. The Friesenried Choir and Orchestra performed works by Bach and Vivaldi with Soprano and instrumental solos, which received a long ovation, well deserved. At the farewell evening, it was clear that our hosts had been busy going through their archives as all the people, visitors and hosts from day one along with founding members were honoured with presentation mugs. A fitting close to an excellent visit.
We were fortunate to take a few first time visitors with us but we would be very pleased to welcome more new members to help keep this connection alive. The AGM is on 30 September in the Salvation Army Rooms so do not be shy, please come along for a warm welcome. S. Wolstenholme
What a difference a year makes! Worstead Pre-school moved into its new premises a year ago and families choosing the facility have soared! The Pre-School has now expanded its hours to include an Early Club, 8am through to 3pm, each week day of term time. The Pre-School still retains its staff and ethos that brought the outstanding grading by Ofsted at their old premises in 2014, and its excellent reputation with Health Visitors and experts within the field continues.
All the staff at Worstead Pre-school are qualified, DBS checked, and these staff work directly with the children. The staff continue to keep up to date with training and research and reflect this in their practice.
All children are catered for at Worstead, including those with additional needs or those who are gifted and talented. Children never get bored at Worstead - having lots of fun, they don't realise how much they are learning, and truly reach their full potential. The Pre-school offer lots of interesting outings and visitors, and a multitude of exciting sessions that include multi-sports, fish and animal dissections, taking car engines apart, building dens, and many varied scientific experiments. If you would like to visit the Pre-school, please telephone Sue for an appointment on 01692 535692 and/or visit our website www.worsteadpreschool.co.uk

Crab & Lobster Festival toasts successful auction and crabbing championships
The 2016 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 28 August with the World Pier Crabbing Championships and annual auction in Cromer.
More than 100 dinky beach huts lined the pier forecourt, local food and craft stalls filled the promenade and lines were set ready for a fun-filled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding.
And the sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.
Prior to World Pier Crabbing Championships scores of people queued along the pier to register before nets and lines were dropped into the sea at 10.30am.
After three hours of competitive crabbing the World Pier Crabbing Champion title, which is won by the largest number of crabs caught on a line, was won by Team IDK from Norwich, who caught eight
crabs. The team of four – David Porter, Rachael Kirkham, 12-yearold Daisy Porter and 10-year-old Holly Porter - said “It’s amazing, we can’t believe we won!”
largest crab measuring 125mm and to Robyn Clarke who caught the most crabs in a net with a total of 35.
Under the hammer of auctioneer Tim Blythe, the 101 boats sold in just over 60 minutes to raise over £6,500.
The beach huts were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival
weekend and up until the Auction. Over 400 individuals had a hand in decorating the huts including 10 community groups and schools as well
as families and staff of local businesses.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “Seeing all the huts on show together for the first time was spectacular along the pier forecourt, I think it went very well and we are extremely pleased with the support the auction received and the amount raised.”
The Festival wishes to thank all the After furious bidding people who helped, on many of the lots the supported and bid hut that achieved the at the event. top price at auction was sponsored by The Next year’s Garden House Gallery Festival will take in Cromer and fetched place 20-21 May £1,000. Recently Asked Questions and Answers from the Clapham & Collinge Family team ‘Why do I need a Will?’ Q1. Do I need a solicitor to produce a Will? A. No you don't need a solicitor to produce a Will. However, to ensure that you have covered every angle, you should seek professional advice. All too often, homemade Wills do not cover all eventualities and/or are defective in some way. It can lead to expensive rectification or disappointed beneficiaries after death. Not only will solicitors ensure that all angles are covered but most also store your Will free of charge.
Q2. How do I know if I'm an executor of a Will? A. An executor is the person responsible for dealing with a person’s affairs once they have passed away. Hopefully the person who made the Will (the Testator), will have informed you at the time of making their Will if you are an executor. If the Testator made their Will through a solicitor and that solicitor has been informed of the death, they will contact the executors. If a solicitor is dealing with the estate or is holding the Will, you can expect to be told shortly after they had been informed. There may also be a copy of the Will with the deceased's private papers which will confirm who has been appointed as an executor.
like to act as their Guardians, if they were orphaned under 18. This will ensure certainty for your children at what will inevitably be a difficult time for all involved.
Q5. How often should I update my Will? A. You should review your Will at least every 5 years or sooner if your circumstances have changed. It is important to check that your Will still reflects your wishes. In some cases, an out of date Will can cause issues and result in a very different outcome than you originally anticipated. A change in circumstances such as marriage (a Will is automatically ‘revoked’ (cancelled) on marriage unless that Will specifically states

Q3. What happens to an estate if a Will's authenticity is questioned? A. Those dealing with the estate should stop work immediately or at least ensure that no distributions are made. If you are concerned about the authenticity of a Will and you feel that you are prejudiced by the contents of that Will, then you should contact a solicitor who is not acting for the executor immediately and as a matter of urgency. The longer this is left, the more difficult it is to unravel.
Q4. What information does my Will need to contain? A. There are many things to consider here. Your Will should contain your details and the details of the executor(s) you wish to appoint. You should provide full names (and if possible, addresses) for those you would like to benefit from your estate. It is important to carefully consider what each beneficiary is to receive from your estate and to specify this in your Will. You should also consider contingencies, so that you decide who will receive what if any of the beneficiaries pass away before you. If you have children under the age of 18 you should confirm who you would

The 2016 Countryside Alliance Awards, nicknamed the ‘Rural Oscars’ and a gold standard of rural business awards, have opened to public nomination at www.countryside-alliance.org and invite contributions across four categories. The award categories are:
• • • •
Local Food & Drink Village Shop/ Post Office Tourism Enterprise Farm Enterprise (new in 2016)
The Rural Oscars recognise hard working rural business men and women and those who routinely go the extra mile for their community or help to preserve and protect rural life. The Awards have become the definitive rural award to win because they celebrate the characters behind the business and the efforts they go to, not just the business itself. Where there are many ‘taste’ awards for produce, or dry business awards, no other scheme honours people in this way. Our Awards celebrate the unsung heroes of the countryside and the work they do. The Awards invite nominations across four categories. Winners will be announced at a Parliamentary reception in March 2017, which will be supported by cross party Parliamentarians.
The awards, now in their 12th year, start with nominations from the public – in 2015 we received over 4,500. Nominations will be accepted until 4 November, whereupon a list of finalists will be drawn up by the judges and judging visits will take place. All finalists are invited to a reception at the House of Lords early in the New Year, where they will hear if the judges, having visited them, have selected them as the British Champions.
Countryside Alliance Awards Director Jill Grieve said “The Rural Oscars have become the gold standard for rural business awards and I look forward to hearing the stories of this year’s nominees. These awards give a voice and a platform to rural businesses and bring them to national prominence, telling positive stories about the countryside. We can’t run these awards without the support of communities and their recommendations, so please get involved and tell us who we should be honouring this year.”
North Walsham and District Historical Society ‘Follies’ by Sylvia Barrett Sylvia explained that a ‘folly’ is usually a small building that appears to have no practical purpose, other than to display the owners wealth and status. Her presentation was one of many slide photographs within the British Isles, with an explanation of each together with the reason for their existence. Many estates had towers, ruins of monastic houses and castles, others lacking such buildings, constructed their own sham versions. A few are described below:
• Stour Head ‘King Alfred’s Tower’ is a triangular building in the care of the National Trust, which is completely hollow within except for the staircase at one corner. A low flying aircraft crashed into one of its corners, the site of which is marked by bricks of a different colour.
The Mausoleum at Blickling • The four sided obelisk at Farley Mount Country Park in Hampshire is dedicated to a horse. In 1733 this horse jumped down into an unseen chalk pit twenty five feet deep with his master, who was Fox Hunting at the time, on his back. In doing so he saved his master’s life. The master realised that he had a rather special horse, entered it for a race under the name of ‘Beware Chalk Pit’ which it won, making him a rich man. The horse is buried under the obelisk.

• John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore built the ‘Dunmore Pineapple’ at Falkirk Scotland, to appease the demands of his young wife. Construction was carried out while they were on ‘The Grand Tour’ in 1761. It is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. No expense was spared in its building. Shortly after the couples return from the tour, his wife left him.
• Nearer to home. The ‘Mausoleum’ at Blickling was built in 1793 by Lady Caroline Harbord, later Lady Suffield, after the death of her father, the second Earl of Buckinghamshire. It is a 45ft high four sided stone pyramid, with a domed interior containing the burial chambers of members of the Hobart family. Story has it that John Hobart, Earl of Buckingham was interred there to avoid being disturbed by his very talkative wife. Mike Sothcott

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
In the last article I mentioned that we had recently received calls from several people whose cats had gone missing, so am very happy to report that another cat is now safely back home. Reggie was re-homed with his brother, Ronnie, in June and because they were quite timid cats, had only just started to go out. When both cats went missing, their new family was very worried, so were delighted when Ronnie returned home after a few days. As Reggie was still missing, posters and flyers were put up, everyone was informed (including the radio) and his family continued searching for him, but he appeared to have completely disappeared. At last, four weeks after he went missing, we received a message to say that he was home. Tired, very hungry and much thinner, he was delighted to be back, as was his family, although his brother did hiss when he first saw him. Because of his condition we can only conclude that he was locked in somewhere for at least part of that time. Plenty of tender loving care, food and drink in little and often portions, plus lots of sleep, were the order of the day to help him recover from his ordeal. The brothers soon settled back into their routine and, when their family are not available, spend time cuddled up together on the sofa or bed. Their family are very relieved to have them home and it goes without question to say these very lucky little cats are being spoiled rotten. Let’s hope some of the other cats that are missing come back home soon.
We recently mentioned websites selling cats (and other animals) and how these websites are working with other organisations to identify the claims being made. A recent communication from our Head Office is now asking for help to identify people selling kittens in poor health and as we believe it is very important to stop this I have included their appeal here so that anyone who has been affected can contact them direct.
Animal Diabetes It’s been another busy summer here at Westover, both during normal hours and during the nights and weekends as well.
Animals don't chose when they fall ill so it can be very reassuring to know that there is someone able to see your loved one at short notice, and for

“Kittens need your help! Cats Protection wants better safeguards for the commercial sale of all kittens. We are concerned about kittens being sold underage or sick, for example, flea or worm infested, underweight or with an eye infection. If you recently bought a kitten online from an individual and you found out it was sick or under eight weeks old, please tell us about it and send Reginald who was a stray, still photos. Email: campaigns@cats.org.uk. Thanks, with your help we can change the quite young, very gentle boy who loves to play law on pet sales.” Rachel, our Fundraising Officer, has been very busy of late organising collections but this has not stopped her from looking at new ways to raise money to help pay for food, veterinary bills etc for the cats in care. She is organising a night out for Bingo lovers at the St Benet’s Hall on Saturday 24 September. This is a new venture for us, so if you enjoy playing Bingo please come along and support us. More details are available in the ‘What’s on Where’ column. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
the vets and nurses here it is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. It is also often when we see some of the most interesting and unusual cases as well. In fact I am writing in between in-patient checks at the surgery where we are currently hospitalising a critically ill diabetic patient and another who is recovering after surgery, having developed gangrenous mastitis (as painful as it sounds). Both are wonderful dogs and helping to nurse them hopefully to recovery is something we really enjoy doing. Such critically sick patients often require very intensive care and we are fortunate enough to have the facilities to allow continuous blood monitoring of organ function, electrolytes and blood glucose. Diabetes is a relatively common condition in cats and dogs and can lead to a life threatening secondary condition called keto-acidosis through the body’s digestion of fat supplies and creation of toxic bi-products.
This leads to a number of potentially fatal complications and means patients usually end up on two drips, one to rehydrate them and another to steadily infuse insulin, whilst requiring hourly blood glucose checks and intermittent electrolyte blood tests as well. Suffice to say nobody gets much sleep! It is devastating for both the owners and everyone else involved when patients do not pull through, but when they do it is one of the most rewarding parts of the job and makes all the tough days worthwhile.
For this reason we all feel very privileged to do what we do, and as a practice will continue to strive to provide the best care possible for our patients (whatever the time of day!). Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Veterinary Centre

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station 2015 Three of Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have been honoured by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution by being awarded the Institution’s Gold Badge for their service.
The three are Peter Poll, Rita Poll and Philip Smith.
Peter Poll joined the Happisburgh sales shop team in 1989, becoming responsible for ordering stock and pricing of all goods in the shop until its closure in 2011. In the early 1990s he joined the Station’s Management Committee and by 1999 was Vice Chairman. 2001 saw him take on the role of Box Secretary.
In 2006 Peter was awarded his Bronze badge, then in 2011 he took on the task of banking the shop money, which he is still doing. Over the years, assisted by his wife, he has taken souvenir stalls to many outside functions.
Rita Poll joined the shop sales team in June 1987 and is still there today. Over the years she has assisted

her husband, Peter, with stalls at many outside functions - she also helped with the emptying of collection boxes.
Philip Smith first got involved with the RNLI at Cromer Lifeboat Station, helping his grandfather, who was Boathouse Manager for the No 2 boat in the 1960s. Then in 1972 he started working for Richard Davies, who became the coxswain of Cromer Lifeboat. He joined the crew of the D Class boat, before joining the RAF on the Air Sea Rescue Launches, as a deckhand, rising to coxswain. He still helped at Cromer throughout his service. In 1984 he joined the crew at Happisburgh and in 1994 he took on the role of Station Press Officer, a role he still holds. In 2002, reaching the then retirement age for

crew, he stood down but carried on as Press Officer and helping with training. In 2009 he became Chairman of Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Management Group, a position he still holds, and is part of the Coastal Safety Team. Philip was awarded a Long Service award for twenty years on the crew and a RNLI Statuette for his valuable support of the lifeboat service. Philip is honoured to get this award, as his father Jim Smith received the same award in 2000 from the Princess Royal for 21 years service as Honorary Secretary of Cromer Lifeboat Station. The Presentation of Awards Ceremony took place on Thursday 8 September at Blackfriars Hall, St Andrews Plain Norwich the presentations were made by the RNLI chief executive Paul Boissier, there was a total of 38 people receiving awards on the night along with family and friends.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station 15 YEARS EXPERIENCE
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on the last day of August when the pagers sounded at 4.15pm to conflicting reports of an inflatable floating out to see at Sea Palling. Joan Mary the Station’s Atlantic lifeboat was launched with Cubitt Siely at the helm and Tim Grimmer and Gaby Hawker as crew. They proceeded to Sea Palling and found an orange inflatable dingy floating empty off the reefs. They returned the dingy to the beach but were unable to confirm if this was the one reported missing. The Atlantic was tasked to start a search for any persons in the water. The Station’s D Class lifeboat was also launched at 4.30pm to help with the search, with Tony Phenix on the helm and Dave Cato as crew. The D Class searched on the shoreline and the Atlantic did an expanding search on the seaward side. Sea Palling lifeboat also joined the search from reef one to nine but nothing was found. Happisburgh Atlantic lifeboat was then tasked to search the coast
south of Sea Palling from Horsey to Winterton, both out to sea and then close to shore - once again nothing was found. After this, the Coastguard stood down the lifeboat as no one had been found or reported missing.
Both Happisburgh lifeboats returned to Station - the D Class returning at 8pm followed by the Atlantic at 8.30pm. Both were ready for service again by 9pm. The call out had taken over 4 hours. Tim Grimmer senior helm said “this is one of the longest call-outs I’ve been on”.
This is the third call-out this month to inflatables that Happisburgh Lifeboat Station had had to deal with. People should be aware of the dangers of inflatables, especially with offshore winds. All inflatables should be tethered to the beach and if you should lose an inflatable it is advisable to notify the Coastguard with a good description and location of where you lost it.
Merchants’ Place celebrates 10th anniversary
The crowds gathered on Wednesday 10 August to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Merchants’ Place, a successful Community Resource and Learning Centre based in the heart of Cromer.
The day was attended by organisations that currently use the Centre and invited guests. MP Norman Lamb (Norfolk MP), Cllr Tim Adams (Mayor of Cromer), John Frosdick (Deputy Mayor) and Jason Bell (Town Crier) attended the formal ceremony. The ribbon was cut, the cake was eaten and the conversation flowed as our guests celebrated with us, making it a wonderful afternoon.

THE NORTH WALSHAM TIMES WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!
The previous day Happisburgh’s D Class lifeboat had attended the Eccles Beach Service and did a display after the service. Before attending the service, they did information leaflet drops on the beaches from Walcott to Sea Palling, talking to holiday makers giving them information on beach safety. Interested in becoming a crew member? The charity welcomes people from all walks of life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.
Happisburgh RNLI are always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello. Volunteers meet every Sunday morning at 9am and Tuesday evenings at 7pm for their weekly training exercises.
51 organisations have used the Centre this year alone.
For the small business we offer a range of services free business advice surgeries, workshops on a range of topics from Email Marketing to Understanding Profit and Loss all hosted by Genix. Lenny’s Match
On 9 August the young lads in Years 10 and 11 of North Walsham High School hosted a charity football match in honour of Lenny Minton, who was recently diagnosed with Crohn's disease after a period of ill health. It was organised by Tyler Byers and Nathan St Pierre to raise money for CICRA (Crohn's in Childhood Research Association).
All players paid to play, referee Andrew Weston paid to ref the match and spectators paid to watch. Rosie Phillips (Year 11) baked cakes to sell at the match adding to the total.
Together this wonderful group of local teenagers raised an amazing £249.71. The match ended 7-6 to the older boys but the year 10 lads fought to the bitter end.
The Year 10 team: Joe Cain, Ryan Osborn, Nathan St Pierre, James Parsons, Liam Pinder, Kai Underwood, Mike Murphy, Cameron Parker, Joshua Rose, Hayden Howes, Lenny Minton, Tyler Byers and Thomas Dugmore
Lenny was overwhelmed by the support and kindness of everyone who participated and contributed to make this event a success and the day almost certainly helped with Lenny's determination in fighting this horrible disease and he is

Norwich City Transfer Review
Many Norwich City fans were left feeling disappointed as the transfer window came to a close at the end of last month, with the Club not partaking in any business on the final day. Many fans felt another striker was needed however Norwich were unable to pull off any deals.
This has left quite a few fans feeling pessimistic about the upcoming season and questioning the ambition and desire of the Norwich City board.
They do have reason to be cautious however as the only striker Norwich signed this window was Nelson Oliveira on a 4-year deal from Benfica having spent a season on loan at Nottingham Forest, scoring nine goals in 24 starts.
Nelson could end up being a shrewd piece of business but he was not the proven Championship striker Norwich fans were
craving. Hopefully, Norwich have the firepower to get through the winter period ahead of the January window, where hopefully another striker can be added.
Norwich vs. Cardiff match Review
Norwich took on Cardiff City as the players returned after the two week international break. Norwich turned out to be 3-2 victors after a late scare from Cardiff.
This was just the result Norwich needed after an incredibly poor performance in their last game away at Birmingham as they lost 3-0. Norwich took the lead through Cameron Jerome as he poked the ball past keeper Ben Wilson from close range, after scuffing his initial chance.
The Canaries doubled their lead right before the hour mark as Russell Martin, starting for the first time this season, headed in from a corner by Jacob Murphy, who has a made a
massive difference since coming back into the side after a loan spell at Coventry last year.
Cardiff did manage to give Norwich a late scare as ex Canary Anthony Pilkington scored with five minutes left on the clock, capitalising on some poor defensive work.
After a nervy last few minutes, Josh Murphy reassured all home fans that the 3 points would be staying in Norfolk, with a beautiful goal curled into the bottom right corner, reminiscent of his effort vs. Blackpool 2 years ago.
However, more shocks were still to come as Pilkington got a brace as he bundled in a goal during the dying minutes of extra time to end what was a frantic finale to an otherwise relatively dull game.
Although it was not the best performance from Norwich they did the job that was required and that was to get all 3 points.

North Walsham Table Tennis North Walsham Derby gets new season underway
The new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League is underway – although there have been several changes to the team line-ups, all six North Walsham teams are back this year. Three clubs – the Trunch based Seaflames, Mundesley and the LCC at Sheringham – have all gained a team meaning that a total of twenty eight teams across three divisions will compete this season (the League is one of very few in the country to be growing and it is an impressive growth considering that a decade ago the League comprised of one division of eleven teams).
The opening League match took place in the Premier Division as NWSCD’s Andrew Tuddenham, Stuart Hook and Philip Stone
hosted NWSCA’s Howard Lupton, John Vaughan and Andy Beane. Tuddenham took Beane to four while on his debut in the top flight Hook did likewise and also went the distance with Lupton in a match where he benefited from some coaching from his opponent during battle! After losing his first two singles both in four, Stone had a handful of chances to take a two sets lead against Vaughan before later nearly making a recovery from 0-5 in the decider only to miss a crucial backhand at 7-9 as Vaughan won a classic final singles 6-11, 17-15, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7. Beane and Lupton won the doubles in straight against Tuddenham and Hook as NWSCA started their campaign with a 10-0 win.
The Vikings' season got off to an encouraging start with a 33 - 5 win at Old Priorians on 3 September.
They were then scheduled to play Sudbury away and Chelmsford at home. Newcomers include winger Jordan Mustard from Swaffham and prop Johnny Masters, with Tom Knight and Harry Downing rejoining. Adam Couzens, Wayne Williams and Andreas Robertson have left whilst Tom Lomax will be away at University. Jake Duffield (pictured), previously a full back or fly half, is now playing at scrum half.
The Youth and Minis' season has begun with training Sunday mornings starting at 10am. Newcomers are welcome, no need to have played before - just turn up at Scottow. The Club encourages use of its amenities by the community, and there have been further recent
