North Walsham leisure and entertainment operator Rossis raise over £3000 for charity in just one week

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

“It’s not how much we give but how much we put into giving” This quote, accredited to Mother Teresa hits home with Bruce Rossi, owner of Rossis North Walsham, who says he views Rossis as a “community” – with a sense of belonging where everyone is welcome - and in just one busy week they have helped to raise more than £3,000 for charity in a series of fitness challenges encompassing rowing, cycling and squash.

In a joint event with Sainsbury’s, teams from Rossis and Sainsbury’s took to rowing machines in the foyer of the North Walsham supermarket on 3 September and covered 77 miles, raising almost £400 for East Anglian Air Ambulance. Rossis Fitness Manager, Liam Killington, was proud of their achievement and commented “Having seen first-hand how vital a resource EAAA is, we wanted to continue our fundraising efforts and the collaboration with Sainsbury’s worked perfectly. We managed to cover more than 77 miles over the day, that’s almost four times across the English Channel”.

North Walsham leisure and entertainment operator Rossis raise over £3000 for charity in just one week

Continued from front cover... A day of events took place at Rossis on 10 September to remember popular Rossis Fitness Instructor, Dave Butler, who joined Rossis after taking early retirement from working in insurance. His Spinning Classes were legendary and he is sorely missed by staff and members alike. Dave’s Day saw members and visitors take part in activities reflecting some of Dave’s favourite things and joined a Coffee & Cake Morning, Spinning sessions and a Quiz & Curry night raising £1745 for The Brain Tumour Charity.

While Squash Coach, Tom Smith, took on a huge challenge with a 24 hour long Squash Coachathon at Rossis in memory of Sarah Harmer, a popular member of the Rossis team, who lost her battle with cancer this year. Tom set up a total of 48 sessions each lasting 30 minutes, followed by a handicap tournament and fun quiz, raising £1200 for The Big C, Norfolk’s Cancer Charity.

One Giant Leap for Air Cadet

Sixteen year old Cpl Lucas Gardner has just completed a parachute jump from 3500 feet. This was the climax of a week long training course at RAF Weston-onthe-Green which included aerobatics in a glider flight at RAF Halton and a day of water sports on the Thames. The packed week ended with a solo, static line parachute jump from a single engine light aircraft.

Lucas has been a cadet at 2110 North Walsham Squadron, Air Training Corps since 2013. He was recently promoted to cadet corporal in recognition of his hard work within the Squadron. He applied for the parachute course and Pre-jump training was lucky to be selected from the many applicants throughout the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing. Lucas was particularly lucky in that, unfortunately, after his flight had made their end of course jump, deteriorating weather and technical problems prevented the other course students undertaking their jumps.

Lucas, who hopes to join the RAF, said “This was a fantastic experience, one of the best things I’ve ever done”.

The jump!

Any young people who want the chance to be involved in these and many other exciting opportunities please contact us at the Squadron.

North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm and welcomes all young people aged between 12 and 18 years. They are currently recruiting cadets and adult volunteers.

Paston Sixth Form College Awards Evening 2016

Kevin Grieve welcomed over 200 students and their parents to a packed St Nicholas Church, North Walsham on the evening of Thursday 15 September. He told the audience “It had been a brilliant year for the College, with the students achieving some of our best ever A level and BTEC results.” In his address, Kevin spoke about the excellent Ofsted report the College received in January 2016 and thanked all the staff and students for their contribution to the success.

He was particularly pleased with a 98.4% A level pass rate and a 100% pass rate on BTEC courses. The results at A level included an incredible A*-B pass rate of 50% and an A*-C rate of 78%.In BTEC 60% of the students achieved high grades with many students achieving triple star distinction level.

“It is not surprising that over 200 students are going to University after A level and BTEC courses, with over 15% going on to top Russell Group Universities including Oxbridge. All over the country Universities will be receiving some talented people from Norfolk” said the Principal.

He also celebrated the number of students going straight in to employment and apprenticeships. He said “many have been highly ambitious and secured some fantastic opportunities in the local area.

The guest speaker this year was Professor Susan J Smith, Mistress of Girton College, Cambridge. She spoke to students about their career paths and having the ambition, confidence and determination to aim for the very best. She made the point that through hard work anyone can achieve their dreams. Then she presented the certificates and prizes to all the students including over 80 Norfolk County Scholars. These students had achieved ABB grades or better at A level and distinctions on their BTEC courses. Students enjoyed the citations from teachers who explained the reasons for the awards. Special prizes included the Ivan Palfrey Cup presented to Oliver Church by Ted Gadsden for the Rotary Club and also the Kristopher Harper prize to Toby Watts for

Coffee Morning for Macmillan

On behalf of Norfolk Wellbeing Service and Norfolk Recovery Partnership, thank you very much to everyone in North Walsham who donated during our coffee morning in aid of Macmillan on Tuesday 20 September.

The event was held in our offices in the precinct by the church but we also took cakes up in to the Market Place and local businesses where people gave very generously and helped us raise a fantastic total of £160 for a great cause.

More volunteers needed for Aylsham, Holt, North Walsham and Stalham Foodbanks

Having successfully opened two new distribution centres in the last twelve months, Cromer and District Foodbank is appealing for additional volunteers in its distribution centres in Aylsham, Holt, North Walsham and Stalham.

“Volunteers are the life blood of our foodbank,” says Ella King, Project Manager. “Volunteering offers a chance to make a real difference to the lives of local people in financial crisis.”

Founded in 2012, the foodbank now works with over 95 partner agencies and met more than a thousand requests for food in the last financial year. The charity offers food, support and signposting across 200 square miles of North Norfolk.

“145 volunteers help us get emergency food to people in real need,” Ella says. “We want people to enjoy volunteering and there are lots of ways to get involved.”

Anyone who might be able to help is invited to contact Ella by email info@cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk or telephone 07826 376343.

North Norfolk Different Strokes Association - Charity Angling Event

Anglers were invited to a charity fish at Glenn Farm Fishery in Sustead last month.

Fishery manager, Claire Barrett, provided breakfast rolls and drinks and Rite Gear Angling Centre of West Runton sponsored bait for the event, which was organised by Douglas Hoy, Chairman of NNDSA. Fishing on the day was slow with plenty of rain from lunchtime onwards but competitors braved the wet conditions to take a few small carp and silver fish - heaviest weight on the day went to Martin Chase of Cross Street, Cromer.

Next Generation Tackle Ltd sponsored prizes, a travel rod and holdall, reel and landing net and handle, which was presented to Martin Chase. A total of £450 was raised by the attending anglers, which goes to NNDSA for use by members with rehabilitation activities such as gym with trained coach, aquarobics and the occasional social trip.

Crab and Lobster Quiche but also filling, and it’s fairly easy to prepare to boot.

This recipe is a real favourite on our Sunday lunch menu and makes the most of the fabulous shell fish we get in from John Davies in Cromer, recent recipient of Norfolk Food and Drink’s Outstanding Achievement award and very well deserved too! It’s perfect for these autumnal days when one still needs something quite light,

Mix flour and butter into breadcrumbs, gradually add water to form a smooth ball. Roll out and place over a tin, gently mould into shape with your fingers. For perfect edges use the rolling pin to nip off extra pastry. Use a fork to prick the bottom of the pastry, place baking powder then some rice or beans on top and put in the oven at 180c until nice and firm (about 20 mins) Put the crab and lobster in the bowl and season. Separately, mix the eggs and cream. Once the pastry is done, replace the rice and beans with the crab mix in and add the cream mix on top. Then simply sprinkle with the cheese. Food Market & Craft Fair at Garden Centre Overstrand is a huge success

On Sunday 25 September Garden Centre Overstrand, supported by Sheringham based events company Ruth Elizabeth Events, hosted its first ever Food Market & Craft Fair, and what a huge success it was.

Over 600 people attended the event, packed with over 20 local exhibitor stalls, along with Radio Norfolk who featured the event on the popular Sunday morning show, Treasure Quest, where David & Sophie found the treasure hiding in a trick by local magician Robert Rathbone.

The event raised £128 for Break Charity and the lucky winner of the hamper packed full of £100 worth of garden goodies was Mrs H from Cromer.

Victoria Sheridan, new owner at Garden Centre Overstrand, said ‘As this was the first time we had held an event like this we did not know what sort of turnout to expect but it is clear we need not have worried. It was fantastic to see so many people at the event’. A Christmas event is now being planned for Sunday 6th November so make a note of the date in your diaries. Cromer and District Food Bank ‘electrified' by Sheringham Shoal

Sheringham Shoal Community Fund has awarded a grant to the Cromer and District Food Bank to enable the purchase of a Nissan e-NV 200 van. This economic work horse, which has been supplied and sponsored by the Nissan dealership Crayford and Abbs in Bodham, North Norfolk, will cut C&DFB's vehicle running costs significantly. The Food Bank covers an area of 200 square miles, and last year supplied 3-day emergency food packages to 2409 people in need, including 920 children. At a running cost of just 2p per mile and with low maintenance costs, the electric van will make savings which will be used to feed more families in need.

12

Ella King, Project Manager at the Food Bank said "We are very grateful to the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund for making this purchase possible. Every penny we save on running costs means more help to local families in need of support."

The keys to the vehicle were presented to Ms King by Timothy Hardy, Financial Controller of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm at Wind Farm Place, the wind farm's O&M base at Egmere near Wells-next-the-Sea in North Norfolk.

Graham Allen 2016 awards announced

Pensthorpe play barn wins prestigious North Norfolk District Council conservation and design award

Hootz House in Penthorpe has been awarded the 2016 Graham Allen Award for its exceptional design and contribution to the built environment of the District.

Pensthorpe Natural Parks new play barn incorporates a 300m2 indoor adventure centre and was commended by the judging panel for its innovative approach to design and sustainability.

Chair of the judging panel and Cabinet Member for Planning Cllr Sue Arnold said “This project has really excelled, not only in its unique architectural design but also in achieving its goal of being truly sustainable and providing an exciting new attraction for the District.

Affordable Drainage Solutions From start to finish, we will go to any depth to fix your drainage problem

“The standard of entries in this 35th year of the Graham Allen Awards has been excellent. There was extremely stiff opposition and all those shortlisted can be incredibly proud.”

Ninety per cent of the timber used in Hootz House construction was sustainably sourced, with the cedar cladding including 50mm-holes for insects and birds. The energy used on site is also provided by a new ground source heat pump.

During the Council’s annual Greenbuild event, members of the public were also invited to vote for their favourite shortlisted 2016 Graham Allen project for the People’s Choice Award. The vote attracted more than 1,000 votes.

The winner of the People’s Choice Award was Sheringham Rail Station for the development of the town’s new tourist information centre, public toilets, platform footbridge and new retail units. The project was praised for its attention to detail, quality of workmanship and for improving the town’s services.

Sheringham Rail Station also won the Commended Award from the Judging Panel.

The Highly Commended Award went to The Stable Yard, Rectory Lane, Northrepps. The project involved the difficult challenge of converting a pair of derelict Grade II listed stables for new use whilst maintaining their original character and appearance.

The judging panel commended the scheme for its success in securing the long-term conservation of the run-down stables and for adopting a traditional approach to repair and restoration.

The awards were presented at Oddfellows Hall, Sheringham on 21 September by Edward Allen, the eldest son of the late Graham Allen who was the first chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

Court fines school run taxi driver after driving without appropriate licence or insurance

North Norfolk District Council wins case against Happisburgh taxi driver

Norwich magistrates’ court last month ordered Michael Hunniball to pay £530 for driving his taxi without the appropriate NNDC licence or insurance.

The court heard that Mr Hunniball’s Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Driver’s licence had expired on 13 May 2016, but that the defendant had driven passengers as part of his Norfolk County Council school passenger transport contract on 20 June 2016.

Cllr Judy Oliver Cabinet Member for Licensing said “This outcome is very important for the Council in ensuring public safety. The penalty awarded in the case shows that these breaches of licensing regulation will not be tolerated and are taken seriously by the courts.”

Mr Hunniball, who owns Black Knight Cars, was fined: • £100 for not having an appropriate North Norfolk District Council licence • £200 for not having insurance, plus 6 points added to his DVLA driver’s licence • £200 costs awarded • £30 victim surcharge North Walsham Times 504 October 8th 2016

Golden Bullet, Silver Screen?

By Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

In a discussion document entitled Strengthening Tax Avoidance Sanctions and Deterrents, the government has provided more information following its announcement in the Budget that it would ‘explore options to introduce downsides for those who enable tax avoidance’. Ministers are said to be frustrated that even when HM Revenue and Customs defeat schemes such as the vehicles designed to exploit tax reliefs for film-making, as are beloved by glamorous celebrities and successful people in all walks of life, the advisers to the schemes can still pocket their professional fees.

More than 1,600 people were named in the Liberty £1.2billion tax avoidance scheme, making it the largest avoidance scheme ever marketed. Investors included celebrities, top businessmen, criminals, doctors, lawyers and even a judge. It centred on a music industry investment scheme. Another company Ingenious marketed tax-efficient film industry investment schemes. Many celebrities with ‘right on’ credentials have been exposed, to the delight of the media.

But, have the General Anti-Avoidance Regulations now gone too far? The developments are disquieting. The bill raises the spectre of retrospective penalties against advice given in good faith.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury has stated that those who provide the services that enable aggressive tax avoidance ‘should bear real risks and costs for their choices’. The Financial Times commented that ‘taking battle to the supply side of the tax avoidance industry is sensible’. Existing sanctions do nothing to deter the sale of ‘off-the-shelfschemes’, as a barrister’s opinion backing them has to-date been enough to validate them.

The proposals for how the new regime will work have prompted widespread unease in the financial professions. There has always been a fundamental principle that arranging ones affairs in such a way as to pay less tax is not If you require advice on this matter please illegal. The theatre has one of the last surviving repertory seasons in the country and is led by Director Debbie Thompson. Her roots are in Norfolk and her heart and passion are in theatre. Her mission is to develop and promote this valued community resource.

The Hub is the theatre’s bar. It offers a variety of food and drink and is run by an army of volunteers. Apart from being a facility for people in the community, tourists and visitors, the Hub also hosts events of its own. One of these is a monthly Sunday evening jazz concert which features local musicians. The term local is loosely applied and covers much of East Anglia. The point, however, is to try to regularly involve local and regional talent. The occasional big name does, however, appear on the gig list and on Sunday 30 October at 7.30pm Alan Barnes will be appearing for a special event and the Hub will move into the auditorium.

Alan is one of the country’s top jazz musicians. He studied saxophone, woodwinds and arranging at Leeds College of Music in the late nineteen seventies before moving to London and embarking on an outstanding career. He has played with some of the top names in world jazz, e.g. Freddie Hubbard, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Ken Peplowski and more. He was recognised and booked by the established British jazz greats of the time including Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker and Humphrey Lyttleton and is respected for his longstanding and fruitful collaborations with contemporaries such as David Newton, Bruce Adams and Martin Taylor.

There is no point trying to put a label on Alan Barnes. His experience and repertoire are vast but whether he is playing traditional jazz standards or hard post-bop it is his passion, enthusiasm and humour that creates the rapport with the audience. Alan will be accompanied by three of the region’s outstanding jazz musicians. Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums). Tickets are £12 from the box office Tel 01263 822347 or on-line at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com (transaction fee applies). North Walsham Times 504 October 8th 2016

NORTH WALSHAM & DILHAM CANAL TRUST – HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

The Trust took part in the nationwide Heritage Open Days on the weekend of 10/11 September at Ebridge Lock.

The main intention of this exhibition was to provide information to the general public about the history, decline and plans to revive this, the only locked canal in Norfolk.

The first important point to make is that this canal is NOT a canalization of the River Ant. By the enabling Act of Parliament of 1812, the canal was to be cut separate from the River Ant and so it was constructed as an artificial waterway. This is evidenced by the straightness and gentle curves of the banks, which can now be seen between Ebridge and Swafield. The old River Ant wandered erratically and had no real depth of water to support the passage of vessels such as the wherries, which were used extensively here in days gone by.

The weather on the Saturday was a little on the damp side and therefore not so many folk came by, but on the Sunday, the exhibits and other attractions were well visited.

On the lock chamber island, Ebridge Model Boat Club members were exercising their skills in controlling and showing off their models to the great interest of the many.

Also on that island were a number of canoes from The CanoeMan of Wroxham, and these

were taken out during most of the Sunday in the wonderful sunshine to paddle up as far as Spa Common and Bacton Wood Lock. The Trust brought a boat along in the hope of being able to take visitors and members for a trip up the canal but this could, unfortunately, not be carried out due to so much weed being present in the water, fouling the propeller.

The Trust’s Wildlife Officer occupied a tent on his own to show photos and examples of some of the moths, which he caught during some late night Moth Studies. All of these examples were kept in perfectly safe and good conditions, for later release back into the wild. Of great interest were two photos - one of a cricket and the other a moth, both of which have only recently been seen in this area and, according to some, are very rare in other parts of the UK.

Also on the nature side was the spectacle of the two parent swans teaching their cygnets to fly! A veritably rare sight to behold.

clay pipes and any amount of crockery – mostly broken.

Old photos brought back many happy memories to some folk who used to use the canal to learn to swim, row a boat, fish or just sit and relax – all of which are now once more possible at this location, although swimming may not be recommended (but was it ever?).

A number of people signed up to become members of the Trust and many more signed the petition to continue restoration of the canal – the list is now well over 3,200 long. It is now possible to walk from Ebridge to Swafield along the eastern bank of the canal, courtesy of the owner, Mr Laurie Ashton. There is no access to the water or banks of the canal between Ebridge and Honing Staithe Cut.

On both days the ‘inner man/woman’ was looked after by the refreshments available such as hot and cool drinks, snacks and wonderful ice creams, partaken sitting in the sunshine viewing the expanse of blue water of the mill-pond and canal, fields, flora and fauna, now regenerated by the restoration of this pound. David Revill, PRO/Trustee

One Trustee braved the sunshine to have a table full of books for sale, whilst the true heart of the day was the exhibition of maps, books, photos and archaeological finds made during the maintenance of the canal so far - old lemonade bottles with the ‘marble’ stopper; Another success for North Walsham beer bottles of a hundred years ago, & Dilham Canal Trust in the

Silver Linings Gala Ball Celebrates Break Charity Supporters

On Friday 14 October at Sprowston Manor Hotel, Break Charity is celebrating individuals, groups and businesses who currently support and have supported the charity in the past, at a sparkling Silver Linings’ Gala Ball hosted by Break Patron and BT Sports presenter, Jake Humphrey.

This is the inaugural year for the Silver Lining awards which it is hoped will become an annual event in the autumn calendar.

Bluebell Pond

The autumn clean up of the Bluebell Pond and its surrounding area took place on Sunday 18 September.

Four of our volunteers were away on holiday, but this was no problem because their places were taken up by new volunteers.

Due to the fine weather, the plants around the periphery and the oxygenating plants within the pond had become overgrown. The volunteers worked like there was no tomorrow in order to sort out the problem. Team work was of the upmost importance, and I must say I am full of praise for the way in which the work was successfully carried out.

A Break ‘Silver Lining Award’ is recognition for a group, individual or organisation that has achieved outstanding results for Break Charity through key initiatives, helping the charity to change young lives across East Anglia. The event has been kindly sponsored by ShredStation, Aspiration Europe and Smith & Pinching, in conjunction with Sheringham based events business Ruth Elizabeth Events. Tickets for this gala evening are available priced at £47.50 per person and include an arrival drink, 3 course meal and dancing to Atomic band.

For more information or to book a ticket please contact Ruth Lowe on 07747 161880 or ruth@break-charity.org

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

We welcomed a very special NAFAS Demonstrator to our meeting on 22 September.

Many thanks to George Blackburn, Rebecca Richardson, Kevin Richardson, Chris Hicks, Andy Creasey, Tony Thirtle, Andy Brown, Keith Hall, Stephen Earl and Ian Smith for a job well done. My friend Chris Stokes even came along to give his support.

It goes without saying that without support from Cliff & Chris Cushion, Mike Kirby, Adam & Adam and Granville Yaxley this work would not have been possible. Roy Haynes, Chairman

Elizabeth Bishop lives and works in Sheffield but, in this age of Facebook, had become a ‘friend’ to many of us. This led to her paying us a visit and staying for a couple of days to celebrate her birthday.

Elizabeth has a warm personality and, as well as her passion for flowers, she also loves animals of all kinds. It was no surprise then that she demonstrated ‘The Bird from Paradise’ for us. Colourful, spectacular and exotic, all her designs would have graced a hotel lobby anywhere in the world.

OPEN MEETING - Friday 28 October at 2pm - Julia Knights - Music is my Therapy followed by Full Afternoon Tea at The Atrium, North Walsham. Tickets £12 - from Sue Bloomfield - 01692 500440.

ART EXHIBITION BY SAMUEL THOMAS Norfolk & Suffolk pop-art inspired paintings

Keep the spirit of summer alive with artwork that is truly unique, euphoric and mesmerising, designed to lift our spirits all year round.

With winter approaching, this is a great opportunity to meet the artist, browse or purchase summer inspired artworks, or consider that extra special gift for someone this Christmas. This imaginative solo exhibition includes an extensive & diverse collection of original paintings, framed and unframed limited edition prints starting from £95 each and greeting cards.

Twenty-nine-year-old, Norfolk-based artist Samuel Thomas has been exhibiting for eight years and prides himself on being a self-taught artist, as he is constantly developing and experimenting with his painting techniques and subject matter. You may be a little surprised to discover some of the artist’s paintings are produced using sand collected from Cromer beach. He has also used coffee to paint with.

18

Samuel enjoys abandoning the traditional flat canvas and instead paints onto used surfboards, life rings washed up on the beach and on old floor boards ripped up from the studio. ‘Although my collection is diverse in terms of style and subject, the main theme that runs throughout all of my paintings is that of ‘escapism’, in regard to the fact that all of the paintings capture idealistic perfect moments in life,’ explains Samuel Thomas. You can view or purchase artwork direct from the website: www.samuelthomasart.co.uk

The exhibition is from 22 - 30 October in the Function Room, Red Lion, Brook St, Cromer, NR27 9HD and is open 10am – 5pm every day with free admission

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery presents an exhibition of mixed media by Cromer resident Nigel Pearce.

The new collection of work focuses on British aircraft in mixed media, from pencil drawings to painting, photography and modelling. A selection of other work by the artist is also on display.

Nigel Pearce was born in Hammersmith, London and moved to Norfolk in 1990. He is a serving Cromer District Councillor.

Nigel’s aeronautical fascination started at the age of four when he experienced the immense size and noise of a de Havilland Comet, the first commercial jetliner, flying low over his London home.

North Walsham Community Centre are now taking bookings for their forthcoming Arts, Crafts and Hobbies exhibition which takes place at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 15th October 10am - 5pm.

supported by a three-year arts appreciation course, Nigel’s aim has always been to produce a lifetime collection of work that demonstrates his passion for flight and the strong aeronautical history associated with East Anglia.

Nigel said “East Anglia has links to the dawn of aviation that Britain has maintained to the modern day. Aircraft are beautifully manufactured by man and the models here also make them extremely interesting to even the casual observer.”

Nigel’s passion has also been expressed in his book Target Taranto, published in 2013, detailing a lesser-known Second World War air raid that potentially changed the shape of warfare.

interesting exhibition with very wide appeal. It is great to be able to offer new or established artists a space to exhibit their works. It is often the boost they need to gain a wider audience or to develop their talents further.”

Flight+ runs 23 September to 22 November at the NNDC offices gallery in Holt Road, Cromer. The 1st Floor Gallery is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8.30am-5pm; Wednesday 10am-5pm; Friday 8.30am-4.30pm.

NNDC seeks to offer free opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit gallery and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually.

with Ned Nimbus

The summer did not disappoint - not here anyway – and, as we progressed through the months from May to September, each month showed an improvement .

We also escaped the majority of the thundery showers that followed the hotter days, and we had lost the cold northerlies by the time we got to mid June.

The outcome so far this year has been very much in line with predictions made. October to December will be very much dominated by below average temperatures and although there will be some warm/milder days, they will be very much in the minority.

Whether this is all a precursor for a full blown cold winter remains to be seen, as there are signs that towards the end of this period and into early next year, things will have become milder.

A strategic business review will now need to consider the future management structure of the authority following three senior resignations.

Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “We received notice of resignations from the three officers concerned. North Norfolk had entered into the interim shared management arrangements on the basis of good faith, openness and transparency. I have now written to GYBC Council Leader ending the interim shared management agreement in order that North Norfolk can focus on the handover to the new management structure we will need to put in place. As an authority North Norfolk remains totally committed to delivering on our four year plan for our communities and that’s where our focus will remain. Cabinet believes that, as an authority, North Norfolk District Council requires its own dedicated management team. We will carry out a strategic

management review to ensure we can deliver the programme of work we are elected to deliver and the savings we need.”

Statement from Labour Party following resignation of three senior council officers: The Leader of North Norfolk District Council has been told to ‘get a grip or resign’ after a three senior officers at the council walked away to work for neighbouring Great Yarmouth Borough Council instead.

The Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council quit after a job-sharing arrangement came to an end in September. She will now be joined by North Norfolk District Council's Head of Finance and Head of HR at the council in Great Yarmouth. The local Labour Party has called on the Leader of the ruling Tory group to "get a grip" after a string of embarrassing news stories pushed the local council into the spotlight, which they believe has led to "chaos". The Tory administration has been accused of sitting on large reserves while making big cuts to local services, and awarding themselves a 23% pay rise while

some have failed to pay their council tax.

Stephen Burke, Chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “Losing one senior officer is careless, losing half of the senior management team is completely incompetent. This story follows the bad press over councillors awarding themselves 23% pay rises while making cuts to local services, and a number of councillors being in council tax arrears for a number of years. The ruling Conservative group has left our district council in chaos. The loss of our local council’s most senior staff raises massive questions about the costs and impact of the sharing arrangement with Great Yarmouth. Why have they resigned? What will councillors do to ensure proper leadership at the top of the council? What has been the cost to taxpayers in North Norfolk? Was there not a clause in place in the agreement to stop the poaching of staff? And how much will be spent filling the gaps in staff?

These are questions which Cllr FitzPatrick as Leader of the Council must answer. He must very quickly get a grip on our local council or do the honourable thing and resign.”

District Councillor to scale Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity

Cllr Hilary Cox will climb to 5,795m in five-day challenge for Multiple Sclerosis centre

Councillor Hilary Cox is set to ascend Africa’s largest mountain just four months after having knee-replacement surgery at the age of 65. The Cromer District Councillor has already reached Everest Base Camp in an expedition five years ago, but will now fly to Tanzania to conquer dormant volcano Kilimanjaro.

Cllr Cox said “I am always up for a challenge especially when it’s for a good cause. If you keep yourself well and fit you have the potential to do more. My doctor wouldn’t give me a medical certificate for the trip because I had problems with my knee, so I had to have a new knee, and it’s working very well at the moment.” Cllr Cox has been in training by walking as much as possible and recently walked the Yorkshire Three Peaks. She added “The main training I’m doing is breathing. When I did the Everest Base Camp I had a bit of altitude sickness, so I am trying to make sure I can control that as much as possible while I am going up Kilimanjaro.” The trek up Kilimanjaro has different climate zones with tropical forest, volcanic and arctic conditions. For the five-day ascent and one-day descent Cllr Cox will be sleeping in a tent.

Cllr Cox is raising money for The Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre in Norwich, the chosen charity of a friend who is also ascending Kilimanjaro. She said “I have been to the centre and it’s brilliant. It offers training for all types of neurological conditions, supporting people to keep moving through the learning of skills and crafts.

Tourism boost for North Norfolk’s economy

North Norfolk’s popularity as a tourist destination is booming with day trippers and people enjoying ‘staycations’ boosting the region’s economy - that’s the verdict from the latest tourism report.

The Destination Research report on the Economic Impact of Tourism for 2015 released last month shows that in north Norfolk more than 10,000 people are employed in tourism related roles (either part-time or full-time) and that tourism is worth more than £484m to the area annually.

That figure has been growing year on year according to previous annual reports, from £415m in 2012, £434m in 2013 and £470m in 2014. This equates to more than a 16% increase across four years. During that same time period, the number of full time equivalent jobs in the sector has increased from 6,550 to 7,831, a rise of nearly 20%.

With more people visiting the area the sector supports local shops, pubs, cafes and transport services, bringing income to suppliers and producers and fuelling the wider north Norfolk economy.

The report highlights that in 2015 there were 7,950,700 trips to North Norfolk with 7,392,000 day trips and 558,700 staying trips (2,383,000 staying nights).

The report estimates that the value of overnight trips is more than £139m with day trippers spending more than £259m.

economy and it is essential to ensure north Norfolk continues to attract people and welcome them back time and time again.”

Cllr Nigel Dixon, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “Anecdotally lots of people tell me – and I have seen it myself – that our towns and villages are attracting more and more visitors. These statistics back that up and help measure that growth in black and white.

“I’m not surprised that more and more people are waking up to the beauty of our district and deciding to spend their holiday time on our doorstep. North Norfolk is quite simply delightful and inspirational.”

Kayla Dunne, Brand Manager of Visit North

Norfolk, said “Our marketing campaign this year, Nip to North Norfolk, focused on how to enjoy the unique attributes of the north Norfolk coast and countryside, such as big skies, beaches and the Broads National Park, through a series of ‘how to’ films.

“Our campaign has reached a wide audience through TV adverts, radio promotion, PR and a social media campaign, which carries on throughout the winter and spring months, encouraging people to visit the area.”

North Norfolk District Council has supported Visit North Norfolk’s 2016 Nip To Norfolk Campaign to attract more people to the area to enjoy all the pleasures of the English coast – for example how to build a sandcastle, how to catch a crab and how to spot clouds.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Most people are now aware that our branch is run completely by volunteers with no paid staff involved in the work that we do. We give our time willingly but, obviously, this time is precious. We cannot always respond immediately to requests for help but do the best we can within the time we have available. When Stephanie receives calls for urgent help she will often spend hours trying to arrange something to help the caller and to find a solution. Sometimes people ask for help but do not answer calls when she rings back. This means that she has wasted a great deal of time which she could have used to better purpose, especially bearing in mind that, not only does she care for some of the cats, answer and deal with the calls to the cat phone, but she also works. A recent call from someone requesting urgent help for a stray cat with newborn kittens, because she would be moving that week, was something that could not be left. Although all the pens were full and some fosterers were

going on holiday, so cats were being moved temporarily to a cattery, she decided this was an instance where we could use the temporary pen in the shed to house this needy little family. Several phone calls were needed to ensure care would be in place and the pen and shed had to be made ready to take the temporary occupants. She advised the person caring for this mum and kittens that we could help but she would need Panda to get them to us. The person indicated she could not respond at that particular moment due to a health problem within the family and would get back to us. When she did not return the call, because of the urgency of the situation, Stephanie rang her back and left a message on the answer-phone. This and several more calls went unanswered. We can therefore assume that the person managed to find a place for the cats elsewhere. We have no problem with this as our concern was to make sure the cats would be safe. However, we regard it as being extremely rude of the person for not responding to our calls as this wasted a lot of time.

If you should ever need help, please do not hesitate to ask us. If we are unable to give this we may, in some instances, suggest another solution or someone else who may be able to assist. However, having asked for help, please let us know if it is no longer required, as our free time is precious and we hate wasting it.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wi shing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

The concerts, now in their sixth year, will take place in North Walsham in October, followed by Holt in February 2017 and concluding with Sheringham in March.

Cllr Becky Palmer Cabinet Member for Culture said “We are delighted to host such a talented group of musicians. This new programme of public concerts promoted by local community groups with the support of Orchestras Live is incredibly exciting. This year’s concert series continues to make a major contribution to the cultural life of the district and firmly underlines North Norfolk District Council’s commitment to the arts.”

The 2016-17 series reflects a wide range of concert music, with a repertoire which stretches from the 15th to 21st century.

Highlights for this year include October’s performance of new works by Manchester Camerata’s current artist in residence Deborah Pritchard, including a concerto for leading trumpet soloist Tine Thing Helseth.

In February, City of London Sinfonia will join renowned violinist Alexandra Wood for an exciting performance including Vivaldi’s classics.

The concert series concludes in March with Sinfonia Viva, featuring soloist clarinet and director Chris Swann. This collaboration will include a narrative version of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Covering the full spectrum of classical performance this series is in partnership with local community partners Arts North Norfolk, FALCON (Facilitating Arts and Literature for the Children of Norfolk) with St Andrews Church in Holt, and Sheringham Little Theatre.

Cllr Palmer added “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Orchestras Live which does so much to produce orchestral events and projects across England and, through their long-standing partnership with North Norfolk, offers our audiences the opportunity to experience a series of orchestral concerts of the highest quality.”

The first concert at the Atrium Theatre with the Manchester Camerata takes place at 7.30pm Saturday October 29. Tickets cost £16 for adults and £12 for 16 years and under and are available at www.artsnorfolk.org or 01692 218060.

Stay Well This Winter – book your flu vaccination now GP practices in North Norfolk and rural Broadland are urging people to help themselves stay well this winter by booking in for a free NHS flu vaccination.

Flu clinics are currently taking place so now is the time to ask at your GP practice if you think you are eligible. The message is: don’t put it off, take up the offer from your GP as soon as you can.

Flu is not like a bad cold; it is a debilitating condition that affects the whole body. It can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and it can also make existing conditions worse. Serious cases of flu can result in being admitted to hospital, and in some instances could be fatal.

Dr Anoop Dhesi, chairman of North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group and a GP in Stalham, said: “Dedicated ‘flu clinics are run by almost all GP practices up and down the country. If you book a slot at a special clinic, or even during a normal practice day, you can ensure you get the vaccine early and have the maximum benefit through the autumn and winter months”

“We strongly urge everyone who meets the NHS eligibility criteria to ring their GP practice and

26

make sure they get vaccinated promptly.”

GP practice clinics – as experienced patients will know – are usually very busy and wellcoordinated. Doctors and nurses are on hand to vaccinate a patient every two minutes or so.

During the clinics, many practices also check patients aged over 65 for atrial fibrillation, looking for any signs that their heart may be starting to beat irregularly. This is another important way of looking after their patients’ health.

Also, don’t forget that if you’re aged 65 or over, you are eligible for the pneumococcal vaccine, which will help protect you from pneumococcal diseases.

The flu jab for adults – and nasal spray for children – can be a lifesaver. It is safe and it cannot give you flu, because it does not contain live viruses.

People with serious health conditions, adults over 65, pregnant women, some carers and many healthy children, all qualify for a jab free from the NHS.

ADULTS You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you: • are 65 years of age or over • are pregnant

• have certain medical conditions • are very overweight • are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility • receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill • are a front-line health and social care worker. (It is your employer's responsibility to arrange vaccination for you)

CHILDREN The flu vaccine is recommended for: • children over the age of six months with a long-term health condition • children aged two, three and four plus those in school years one, two or three • children aged between six months and two years who are eligible for the flu vaccine (this group should have the flu jab) • children eligible for the flu vaccine aged between two and 17 (this group usually have the flu vaccine nasal spray). Your GP practice, health visitor or school nurse can provide more information, or there is much more detailed guidance available online at www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pages/ who-should-have-flu-vaccine.aspx

SHANTYMEN IN A SHARING MOOD

Sheringham Shantymen have hatched a cunning plan to avoid accusations of reigniting fiery “Crab Wars” passions as they plan another daring cross-border raid under the cloak of darkness.

The popular singing group staged a sell-out concert on Cromer Pier last year to crown 25th anniversary celebrations. Several local charities collected handsome cheques as a result.

Now the Shantymen are looking forward to a rousing return to the Pavilion Theatre in early November – with proceeds being shared equally between Sheringham and

Cromer Lifeboats.

“I think this arrangement shows that not only do we come in peace, but that we are determined to build as many new bridges as possible. It’s not only Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft who need them!” quipped musical director Brian Farrow.

“We have savoured another highly successful season of gigs near and far after those anniversary jollifications and we’re delighted to return to our neighbouring town to set the seal

on continued success.”

Making Waves Again promises another top class musical treat on Sunday, 6 November at 7.30pm. Tickets are available now at £10 (concessions £9) from the Pier Pavilion Theatre Box Office on 01263 512495.

Cromer-based writer, broadcaster and entertainer Keith Skipper has again been invited to make the Shantymen feel welcome and remind them how to behave in what many consider to be north Norfolk’s premier seaside resort.

“There’s a very thin line between healthy rivalry and open conflict. It’s my job to ensure all goes as smoothly as possible. A few cheap laughs at the Shantymen’s expense could well creep into proceedings” said Mr Skipper.

Thread lift goes non-surgical. A unique non-surgical facelift from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic ones-same as used in fillers.

We have been using a variety of face and neck lift techniques at the Coltishall Clinic. From Surgical face-lifts, laser facelifts, liquid facelifts to very gentle no needle radiofrequency lifts. Thread lifts have been around in various forms for last many years. Recent refinements however make this procedure very attractive.

So what has changed? Dr Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCCAM Medical director and laser surgeon explains- ‘three things’1] The procedure has changed from a surgical procedure to nonsurgical. We do not need to use a knife anymore. 2] The threads have changed from permanent threads to reabsorbable

3] The price has come down. In the past you could have a surgical face-lift for not very much more so I was reluctant to do a thread lift at such a higher price point. Now these advantages have resultant in a resurgence of interest in thread lifts. A thread lift enables two joint actions: • A lift effect as soon as threads are applied for an immediate and discreet result. • A regenerative effect, for progressive and natural results.

How is the procedure performed? No special preparation is required prior to Silhouette Soft® treatment. After a small local anaesthetic, the doctor inserts the thread under the skin to a depth of about three to five millimeters. No incision is required, as the suture is inserted using a fine needle. It is held in place with absorbable cones. Once the suture as been applied, the doctor performs slight compression of the tissue to reshape it by hand and to obtain the desired lifting effect. The non-inserted ends of the suture are cut off. One or more sutures may be applied, depending on the patient and treated area. What is the recovery like? After Silhouette Soft© treatment, as with any cosmetic treatment, some slight swelling, redness or bruising may sometimes be observed, but these disappear within days. There is sometimes a slight wrinkling of the skin (required for optimisation of the treatment), which disappears very quickly.

Norwich City FC Review

Since my last review of Norwich’s home game against Cardiff, the Canaries have been flying high, ever since going on an unbeaten run of five games in all competitions.

After Cardiff, Norwich were paid a visit by newly promoted Wigan in the midweek kick off. Norwich played quite poorly on the day, however bright spark Jacob Murphy, who is having a real breakout season this year alongside twin Josh, scored two goals to give Norwich a 2-1 home win after Jordi Gomez pulled one back for Wigan late in the second half.

After the win against Wigan, Norwich then faced tough opposition in the form of Nottingham Forest as they travelled away.

Norwich had a very poor start to the game as they went behind just before half time, as Greek striker Vellios prodded Forest ahead after a defensive lapse in concentration by Norwich. However Norwich performed a remarkable comeback as they came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1, after goals from Howson and Dorrans, with the latter’s goal being a fine volley from the edge of the box with the Forest keeper stranded.

After beating Forest, Norwich then faced a trip to Merseyside to face Everton in the League cup, a game which not many Norwich fans expected to progress past. Steven Naismith scored against his old club as his scuffed shot managed to loop over

The Vikings have made a brilliant start to the season, winning their first four games and, on each occasion, scoring four or more tries to gain a bonus point.

At the end of September they were top of London North One, one point ahead of Tring and three of Chingford, the league's other unbeaten teams. The Vikings next two fixtures were against these sides on the first two Saturdays in October, so by the time this article is published it may be a little clearer who are going to be frontrunners at this early stage. Jordan Mustard - pictured on the right with fellow newcomer ex UEA captain Nick Hartshorn - has had an amazing start to his career at Scottow. The winger joined pre-season from Swaffham who play three leagues below the Vikings, but far from being over-awed he has played

the helpless Marten Stekelenburg. After the break, Norwich continued to resist the swarm of Everton attacks as Josh Murphy scored an absolute wonder goal, taking the ball past two players before rifling home a 20 yard shot.

Most recently, Norwich faced newly promoted Burton Albion, a game which, if they won and other results went in their favour, could put them top of the table. Norwich won 3-1 after goals from Olsson, Jacob Murphy and a first ever career goal for fan favourite Ivo Pinto, as he topped off a good home performance with a nice run and finish in the dying embers of the match.

every game scoring a try in each one.

The Raiders have won two from three, whilst the Warriors’ (3rd XV) first game was cancelled by their opponents. The latter are still recruiting, contact Ed Salmon 07769 976123. Competitive fixtures have started for the Youth & Minis. Newcomers are welcome, contact mikestmack@gmail.com

The Vikings next home fixture is on 22 October versus Ruislip.

Yoga at Autumn Equinox

On Thursday 22 September Vee Zappia along with two friends, Ruth Hedges and Debbie Mason, organised an open air yoga event to celebrate the Autumn Equinox, to raise funds for the Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK.

Around 60 people attended and the weather, the environment and the whole feel of the occasion was truly magical. Ages ranged from 3 years to 75 years. There was also a small raffle for which a few local small Andreas Yiasimi businesses had donated prizes – our grateful thanks to them. The total raised in just over an hour was an amazing £500.

Vee teaches at FFMA Gym on Louden Road in Cromer on Tuesdays 10am and on Wednesdays at 7.30pm, at The Belfry Centre in Grooming Parlour Overstrand on Wednesdays 10am and Thursdays 6pm Full Grooming & and at Cromer Hydrobathing Kerstin Rogers Country Club on Available Tuesdays at 11.30am. 01692 501212 All classes are £4. 07817 179228 Veronica Zappier debonairdogs@btinternet.com

North Walsham Table Tennis Derby Night at the Sports Centre

The League got into full swing with derby night at North Walsham Sports Centre. In the First Division NWSCC’s Eric Dolden, Carrie Last and Joel Lodge fought out a hard fought derby draw with NWSCE’s Andrew Weston and James and Ben Lester with James taking a maximum dropping just one set to Last.

Dolden beat Ben Lester in four but lost out to Weston in five. After beating Last in five, Ben Lester came back from four match-points at 6-10 down in the decider against Lodge only to miss his serve and give the game away at 10-11! Last and Lodge won the doubles also in five against Weston and James Lester to secure the draw. On the adjoining table and in the Premier Division NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott and the Richard’s Westgate and Porritt hosted NWSCD’s Andrew Tuddenham and the Phil’s Mole and Stone in another Sports Centre derby. NWSCB won 10-0 but it was another marathon affair for NWSCD with many lengthy sets – examples included
