North Walsham Brownies
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
At our first meeting this term, we had a small spikey visitor! Brown Owl’s neighbour, Marian, came with a small hedgehog to talk to the Brownies about the dangers hedgehogs face this time of year, and how we can all help them by checking piles of garden rubbish before having a bonfire, putting out food and water for them in our gardens and making small holes between gardens so they can move around looking for food.
Marian knits lovely colourful hedgehogs, which she sells for £1 and the money raised helps a little towards the hedgehog food bill. As you can see from the photo we all loved the knitted hedgehogs.
On Saturday 22 October we are having a Jumble Sale, from10am until 12noon, at the Guide HQ, to raise money for the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal. We are looking for nice clean stuff to sell and lots of lovely people to pop in and buy stuff so we can really make a difference.
Brownies, Rainbows, Guides and Rangers meet at the Guide HQ on Aylsham Road North Walsham - to find out more and to join go to www.girlguidesuk.org.

On 12 November Age Concern North Norfolk are turning back the clock and getting into the ’60s mood as part of their ongoing fundraising efforts in conjunction with the team from G.I.F.T. (the Good Intentions Fundraising Team).
Their ’60s-themed evening stars Norfolk’s very own Pat James. Fancy dress is optional – as the best costume wins a prize – but either way we hope to see everyone getting in the swing of the party and come and enjoy an evening of live music and dance. Tickets cost just £7.50 and that includes a buffet. The evening starts at
£5 per person and everyone is welcome. A raffle and light refreshments will be available on the night. It would be great to see you there for another fun filled evening, to challenge your little grey cells whilst helping to raise money for our much-needed local independent charity.
7.30pm and finishes around 11pm, and is being held at Aldborough Community Centre. For more information, or to reserve your ticket, please call GIFT organiser Yvonne Tiffany on 01263 768076 or by calling Age Concern North Norfolk on 01263 821188 or 01263 823126.
Our next fun quiz night is this coming month, also at Aldborough Community Centre, which is on Friday 28 October staring at 7pm. It costs
Age Concern North Norfolk provides care for the older person at our Day Services, which involves personal care, lunch, a bathing service as well as activities. We also have a Befriending scheme and three Keep-In-Touch Groups in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham respectively where an older person can meet new friends and get support. We organise regular events and intergenerational activities and are always on the lookout for new ways to expand and outreach to those who are most socially isolated.
Changes to State Pension Age 1950s Women
I would like to draw your readers’ attention to the 2.6 million women born in the 1950’s on or after 6 April 1951 who have had significant State Pension changes imposed on them by the Pensions Acts of 1995 and 2011. Changes which were made with little, or no, personal notification. Some women had only two years notice of a six-year increase to their State Pension age.
In Norfolk it will affect thousands of women in this age group. Many will not be aware that their circumstances have changed.
The issue is that the rise in 1950s women's State Pension age has been too rapid and has happened without sufficient notice being given, leaving no time to make alternative arrangements. Women born in this decade feel they have been seen as a soft target, financially. They have
worked hard, raised families, paid their tax and national insurance with the expectation that they would be financially secure when reaching 60. Historically these women had no state funded child-care so leaving work and often taking on part-time, low-paid employment (and unequal pay) as their children grew.
Many of these women are living in hardship. Retirement plans have been shattered with devastating consequences. Many are already out of the labour market, caring for sick husbands or elderly relatives, providing childcare for grandchildren. Many others suffer age-related illness and discrimination in the workplace, and are struggling to find employment. The inevitable consequences are less money circulating in the local economy a greater strain on local health services, and an underclass of ageing women.
Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is a national campaign asking for fair transitional arrangements for women affected by these changes. We are not against women’s pension age being equalised with that of men.
If any of your readers would like further information they can find it on the group website at waspi.co.uk. We have a Norfolk Waspi Group Facebook Page - Pension Action In Norfolk- PAIN/Waspi in Norfolk. This is a closed group, please send a request to join.

University Challenge Success for Paston Sixth Form College
The final of this year’s University of Lincoln, University Challenge took place on Friday 30 September.
The top 14 teams from the summer’s national heats including Paston Sixth Form College met in the final. There were teams from all over the country including Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Surrey, Kent and Norfolk. The quiz was very difficult with over 20 rounds of questions in the final. Even the teachers found it very challenging!
In the end the scores at the top were very close – The Paston team of Harriet Bradnock, Holly Clarkson, Toby Watts and Kate Constable came joint fifth, but were only three correct answers behind the winning team St Ivo School, Cambridge. So they did really well to get to the final and to be placed as one of the top teams in the country.
Paston has a very good record of supporting students going on to University and the quiz was a fun way to engage students. Each year 70% of students apply to University with 25% accepting places at Russell Group Universities.
Toby said “It was a really good day, very challenging but I think we did well”.
Holly said “I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and although we found the final challenging, I am proud of our team and what we achieved”.
Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes
The inaugural meeting of the new SSAFA fundraising action group, the Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes was well attended.
Jenny Lambert led the meeting, first introducing Stuart Fidler, the Norfolk SSAFA chairman who presented the aims of SSAFA and recounted the stories of local beneficiaries. The discussion continued as to how the ladies will work together to fundraise for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association (SSAFA).
The scheduled SSAFA Christmas Fayre on Saturday morning, 26 November in Coronation Hall, Mundesley, promises to be a preChristmas treat with new stalls, crafts and gifts – simply everything you need for Christmas. This event follows on from past, very successful RBLWS fayres. Please put the date in your diary and come and support us.
In the meantime, the next meeting of the Mundesley and District SSAFAgettes will be at 2pm on 16 November in Coronation Hall, Mundesley. Do come and join our merry band of ladies. Whether your interest is purely social or whether you have a talent for up-cycling, fundraising or helping at the Christmas Fayre, we would love to see you at the meeting.

The RNLI is only able to carry out its role of saving lives at sea by people supporting us with donations and fundraising. To this end Happisburgh Lifeboat Station is setting up a Fundraising Team to help raise funds for the Station and the RNLI as a whole. We are particularly interested to hear from someone who would be willing to take on the role of Fundraising Coordinator. We are looking for people to become part of this team, so if you have time to spare and would like to join our team of volunteers then please call Philip Smith on 07766 007936 evenings or weekends or E-mail on lofty273@googlemail.com with your details and what you can bring to the Team. The fundraising Team is as important as the crew manning the Lifeboat itself, so come and join the RNLI family.
Interested in becoming a crew member?
The charity welcomes people from all walks of life and no previous sea-going experience is needed to join the lifeboat crew. The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers. By volunteering with the RNLI people will gain some great experience, knowledge and skills.
Happisburgh RNLI are always looking for new volunteers to help run the lifesaving service. If you are aged 17 or over, physically fit, work or live within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station and eager to join a lifesaving organisation then please come by and say hello.
Volunteers meet every Sunday morning at 9am and Tuesday evenings at 7pm for their weekly training exercises. North Walsham Times 505 October 22nd 2016

October half-term and Christmas sports activities
North Norfolk District Council announces October half-term and Christmas holiday activity options.
Get ahead of the game and check out what is on offer at North Norfolk District Council’s community sports centres during October half term and the Christmas holidays.
Activities for both holidays have been included in the latest brochure, which is available online at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk and will be distributed via schools in the coming weeks. Events at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham sports centres include roller skating, football, street dance, trampolining, dodgeball, badminton, logic games, Christmas arts and crafts, playground games, ball games, pirates and capture the flag.
Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said “Planning for school holidays can be a challenge, but with these activities children can have a healthy and enjoyable time while making 8
new friends in a professionally run environment. “There is a wide range of choice, from the very active to the less so - such as logic games and crafts. “Check out the brochure, there are plenty of opportunities to be had.”
Costs range from £2.50 for sports sessions to £9.50 for day activities. Different activities are aimed at a range of age groups. The brochure also carries details of October half term events at Bacton Woods and Holt Country Park - Halloween trails and a fungi walk guided by an expert.
And there are also details of birthday party packages at the sports centres and plans for 2017. Planning in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Confused about planning and how to respond effectively to protect the character of your local community?
There is strong protection for ‘natural beauty’ within (and close to) the AONB within national and local planning policy and guidance, which might help you. The planning system is one of the most important tools for keeping the Norfolk Coast such a special place.
Information on how to get involved in planning consultations has recently been improved and updated on the Norfolk Coast Partnership web site – see www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/partnership/ get-involved-in-planning/1130
It includes ’10 top tips’ for involvement in planning decisions and links to our ‘planning and development’ section, with more detailed information on relevant local and national plans and policies, commenting on plans and proposals, developing a planning application in the AONB and Neighbourhood Plans, plus a link to information about work we are doing to try to keep the night skies in the AONB dark, so everyone can enjoy the constellations and wildlife is not affected.

Addition to car park and toilet plans on part of North Lodge Park
Specially designed toilet added to planning application.
A new Changing Places toilet for people to use in Cromer has been added into North Norfolk District Council’s plans for the new toilets and car park on part of North Lodge Park.
A campaign for the Changing Places toilet was launched on social media in recent weeks. After seeing the support for the initiative online, Cllr John Rest, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets, asked for the facility to be included in the designs for the new toilets.
Cllr Rest said “I’m delighted to say that we have altered our design for the new toilets to include a Changing Places toilet. These facilities are much-needed and offer a real benefit to Cromer.
“It made sense to change the designs especially to help people with disabilities who are visiting Cromer. Visitors would be able to park in the new car park, make use of the Changing Places toilet and get easily down to the seafront.
“Good public toilets that offer the range of facilities that visitors now need are essential – especially when we know more people are visiting north Norfolk than before. I’d like to thank campaigners for raising the issue and giving us the opportunity to provide a much needed facility in Cromer.”
The plans, amended to include the Changing Places toilet as part of the new public toilets and a 48 space car park, are currently out to consultation. Emma Spagnola, who started the Facebook group said “This is amazing news. It will make Cromer more accessible for many, locals and tourists alike. I would like to thank all the people that have supported the campaign, particularly Tony Clough MBE (Changing Places) and Jane Davis for putting up with my endless questions.”

Importance of a Will what will you leave behind?
Clapham & Collinge Solicitors support local Will scheme
Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to Lesley Ward Jennefer Nash your assets on your death. Without a Will, your estate, which is everything you own such as: your property, bank accounts, pensions and personal possessions, will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. These rules are arbitrary and take effect irrespective of whether or not you would have wanted the distribution. Everyone should consider whether or not they need a Will and then aim to review it at least every five years to check that it reflects any changes in their personal or financial circumstances.
Clapham & Collinge has always been a big supporter of charities and has previously taken part in Will Aid, as well as the Marie Curie Will Scheme that took place 1st May – 31st July this year. This October we are taking part in the scheme Norfolk Will Help. The scheme is a local Will scheme, supporting the following charities: Nelson's Journey, Age UK Norwich, The Benjamin Foundation, Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind (NNAB) and the Big C.
We can draft one of our basic Wills, and instead of our fees you will be asked to make a suggested donation of £100.00 for a single Will, and £150.00 for a couple, which will be split equally between the five charities. We have a number of appointments available through the Norfolk Will Help scheme across our offices in Norwich, North Walsham, Sheringham and Brooke.
Statistics collected in 2015 show only 47% of adults in the UK have written a Will. Out of those who have made a Will, 52% have not reviewed it in the last three years. If you have had a change in circumstances since creating your most recent Will such as, marriage, children or divorce it may mean that your Will is invalid or no longer reflects your wishes. Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department said ‘‘We encourage clients of all ages to consider making arrangements for the future. Having a Will allows you to decide what happens to your property and possessions. It puts you in control. If you die without a Will, your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules, which are old fashioned and can lead to disappointment and injustice. We are delighted to support Norfolk Will Help once again as it’s a great way to put your affairs in order while supporting 5 Norfolk charities.’’

Iron Horse back in the saddle
Over 350 members and shareholders had a special treat at an event held for them on 1 October at North Norfolk Railway.
Visitors to the railway’s Weybourne workshops were delighted to see the M&GN Society’s ‘Iron Horse’, War Department 2-10-0 locomotive 90775 boiler reunited with its chassis and wheels – a visual milestone in the process of the loco’s expected return to service early next year in time for the start of the 2017 season.
Society Chairman, Neil Sharpe, said ‘Trustees and members are really pleased with the progress being made. The ‘Iron horse’ really is back in the saddle’.
The Society awarded the contract for the locomotive’s overhaul to the recently established engineering division of the North Norfolk Railway, which has received
considerable investment from the Railway in new facilities and expertise to enable the complete overhaul of locomotives without the need to send them away. It can also undertake work for other heritage lines and locomotive owners. The work on the WD included the complete refurbishment of the horn guides, axle boxes and wheel sets. Optical alignment equipment was used to ensure the accuracy of these components and complex plate renewals were done in the new boiler shop.
Following the successful steam test earlier in the month, the boiler was reunited with the loco chassis in late September. This is a major step in the completion of the overhaul.
Mr Sharpe said ‘The Members and Shareholders’ Day was a huge success giving visitors a wonderful opportunity to see the railway at work and what goes on behind the scenes to make the operation of the railway so successful. The opportunity to see the newly ‘mated’ boiler and chassis was an added bonus and whetted appetites for its return to service in 2017’.
facility, which now has a growing order book for overhaul works including some from Europe’.
The locomotive WD 90775 was built at Glasgow in 1943 as part of an order for the Ministry of Supply. The engine from new was sent abroad to work, and never worked for British Railways. It was repatriated for preservation in 1984, and has been working on the NNR since 2003. It was purchased by the M&GN Society in 2006. The engine is numbered 90775, as the last engine of the same design in BR stock was numbered 90774.
Fundraising for the “Iron Horse Project” has so far raised almost 50% of the estimated cost of the overhaul and return of 90775 to traffic.
Trevor Eady General Manager added ‘the WD is the first complete locomotive overhaul to be processed by the newly established department at the North Norfolk Railway. Our staff have demonstrated the capabilities of the new

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
Last month’s presentation was given by former seafarer Karl Lumbers on the history and work of Trinity House.
His closing remark emphasised the survival of the charity over the past 500 years. Perhaps the most significant feature is that while the means of the organization achieving its objects have changed beyond recognition over that time, the task remains unaltered.
The Charity was granted a Royal Charter by Henry VIII in 1514 to a guild of mariners troubled by the poor conduct of Thames pilots. It is interesting to note that during that period French, Flemish or Scottish pilots were not accepted! The objects were to ‘improve the art and science of mariners’. and regulate the conduct of those who take upon themselves the charge of conducting ships. Later, in 1566 they were enabled to ‘make erect and set up so many beacons and signs for the sea.
While initially the concern was for the Thames, loss of shipping between Newcastle and London, caused the erection of the Lowestoft Lighthouse in1609. Trinity House is presently responsible for the English coast, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar.
Until the end of the 18th century, fires were used as illuminates, but oil was first introduced with the use of an Argand lamp in 1782. In 1836 Trinity House accepted powers to buy out the last remaining private lighthouses The first light vessels were established in 1732.
Probably the most famous incident in the annals of maritime rescue was the heroic effort of Grace Darling, the daughter of the Longstone lighthouse keeper, when she rescued nine members of the crew of a stricken cargo ship, the ‘Forfarshire’ off Farne Island in 1838. She died four years later, at the age of 26.

The work of the Trinity House Maritime Charity predates the operations of the guild of mariners, mentioned earlier. A benevolent ‘fraternity’ existed before 1514, based in Deptford, to care for distressed mariners, sometimes referred to as ‘decayed seamen’, and their widows and dependents. Initially it possessed 21 almshouses, but the activities of the Trinity House Maritime Charity presently extends itself to many other projects. These include providing education, training, cadetships and welfare. Among the latest projects is the construction of Walmer House, in Kent, replacing war damaged homes in the Mile End.
The next meeting of the Club will be on 26 October in the Community Centre. Retired or semi retired professional or business men, who wish to join will be very welcome. Ted Gadsden

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER DAHLIAS
Over a period of 18 months, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers at Blickling Hall have turned a neglected events field into a beautiful, productive walled garden, similar to the one that supported the estate up to the late 1930s.
The walled garden produces vegetables and cut flowers and is edged with over 150 fruit trees and it has been interesting to visit the garden regularly as the restoration takes shape. In each season there have been things of interest and the current star of the show is the display of dahlias.
Dahlias have been in and out of fashion since they arrived in Britain from Mexico some 200 years ago. However, current gardeners are again discovering that dahlias are easy to grow and bring wonderful colour to the late summer
garden. There are few other plants that produce flowers in such an array of colours reds, purples, mauves, pinks, yellows, magenta, orange, apricot and white. There are also the different sizes and flower shapes. The tightly packed perfectly formed petals of ball and pompon dahlias, the multi-spiked flower heads of the small, medium and giant cactus cultivars, the simple singleflowered forms, the water-lily varieties and many others.
Some people consider that dahlias can be garish but they come in such a variety of shapes, sizes and colours that there is a plant for every taste and varieties that will fit into every colour scheme.
Anyone with dahlias in their garden will now be preparing to protect them for the winter. There are many different ideas on how this should be done. Many gardeners lift their dahlia tubers at the beginning of November or after the first hard frost, whichever comes first. Lifting the tubers is also necessary if slugs are a problem but if the garden is
North Walsham Times 505 October 22nd 2016
relatively free of such pests, sheltered and with free draining soil you might get away with planting deeply and then giving winter protection with straw or bracken.
If you decide to bring the tubers in cut them down to 6 inches from the soil after the first frost blackens them and dig up the tubers carefully, shaking off any soil. Put them upside down in a seed tray or box for a week or so until any water drains from the hollow stems. When the stems are drained, turn the tubers the right way up and stack them together in a box, covered with old potting compost – keeping the crowns uncovered. They must be dry but not left to dry out completely and should be checked once a month and watered if they are getting too dry. Store the tubers in a dark, dry, frost and rodent free place.
About mid-February the tubers can be potted up and with a little heat shoots are produced to provide cuttings to grow on for next year’s plants. If you are not going to take cuttings, plant the overwintered tubers about 6 inches deep in early April in good rich soil in full sun. The new shoots will appear above the soil about a month later. NORMAN LAMB CALLS FOR CHANGE IN THE LAW TO REQUIRE MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID IN THE WORKPLACE Norman Lamb MP is calling on the government to commit to equality for mental health in the workplace by amending health and safety legislation to require all employers to provide Mental Health First Aid.
Mr. Lamb made the call in a Parliamentary Motion to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2016, which this year focuses on the importance of ‘psychological and mental health first aid for all’. The campaign was launched in collaboration with MHFA England, a leading provider of mental health first aid training across the country, with the support of the mental health charity Mind and leading businesses WH Smith and Unilever. Currently, the main legislation which relates to first aid provision in the workplace focuses on physical illnesses and injuries and is silent on the mental wellbeing of employees. Mr. Lamb’s Early Day Motion marks the first step in a new campaign urging the Government to address this lacuna in the law, and update guidance for employers to ensure that they are clear about their obligation to support workers’ mental health. Having staff trained in Mental Health First Aid can help to prevent someone’s condition deteriorating when they are experiencing a mental health problem, by providing initial support until professional help is received.
Secretary to request a meeting to discuss a possible change to the law, said “The bias towards physical health in first aid legislation is a clear example of the discrimination against mental health in society, which cannot possibly be justified at a time when more and more people are reporting that they have struggled with mental health problems at work. “If mental health is to be treated in exactly the same way as physical health, every organisation should have trained Mental Health First Aiders just like they have physical first aiders – and I am in no doubt that this important principle should be enshrined in law.
“On a personal level, my eye-opening experience of Mental Health First Aid training was not only incredibly helpful but also emotionally powerful. Most of all, it brought home the absolute importance of listening to people’s concerns,

Recently, a major new survey by Business in the Community, in collaboration with MHFA England, found that employers across the UK are failing to provide adequate support for employees or equip managers with the skills to help them. More than three quarters (77%) of employees have experienced poor mental health and nearly two thirds (62%) have identified work as a contributing factor, the Mental Health at Work report found. Despite this, over half of employees (56%) who disclosed symptoms of poor mental health said that their employer took no actions to address this and only 1 in 5 managers (22%) had received appropriate mental health training.
WHSmith and Unilever have now pledged to lead the way in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of employees, while also calling on the Government to act to bring parity to mental and physical health in the workplace. WHSmith has committed to training 1,100 line managers in Mental Health First Aid over the next 12 months, in a bid to ensure that the company has as many mental health first aiders as it does physical first aiders.
Mental Health First Aid training provides people with the skills to recognise the symptoms of common mental health problems, provide initial support to prevent the problem from getting worse, and effectively guide a person towards the right support services. To date, almost 150,000 people in England are trained in Mental Health First Aid.
Norman Lamb MP, who recently became a trained Mental Health First Aider, and has written to the Work and Pensions
giving them time to express themselves and making sure they understand that there’s nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about.
“If we can stop people’s condition deteriorating and guide them to help, we can have a big impact on their lives. Sickness absence and unemployment related to mental illness is an enormous burden on the economy, so the economic as well as the moral case for all employers to adopt Mental Health First Aid is overwhelming. “I was very pleased to highlight this important issue in Parliament on World Mental Health Day, particularly given this year’s theme of ‘psychological and mental first aid for all’. The Government should act without delay to amend first aid legislation to include mental health, and make it clear that employers’ responsibilities in the workplace relate to the mental as well as the physical wellbeing of staff.”

Youngsters Step into Panto Spotlight
Bright young stage talent sang, danced and acted their hearts out to earn a place in a seaside pantomime.
because we are the Little Theatre we cannot!” Selection was also down seeking a mixture of sizes to fill parts ranging from small Lost Boys to bigger pirates.
Fifty hopefuls stepped into the audition spotlight with dreams of landing a role in Peter Pan at Sheringham Little Theatre.
But the casting session also threw up the need for Mr Earnshaw to rewrite the script – when the girl who landed the Tiger Lily role – Rachel Feetham - was younger and smaller than the original plan.
The search was on for Lost Boys, pirates, plus the key parts of John, Michael and warrior princess Tiger Lily.
With numbers pinned to their clothes they were put through their paces learning lines, dance routines and songs under the eagle eyes of director Nick Earnshaw and his vocal and dance experts.
Young cast hopefuls at the Sheringham pantomime auditions
“We are looking for youngsters with stage presence who can connect with the audience, who can sing and dance on beat,” said Mr Earnshaw.
“It was a good turnout and they were all very good – and we could have taken on more, but 22
“She was so good and brought something different to the role – so I will rewrite the panto to fit.”
In October the youngsters – who, apart from Tiger Lily, are split into two teams - begin weekly rehearsals, before joining the main adult professional cast in late November for the final countdown to curtain up in December.
Mr Earnshaw is doing his fourth Sheringham panto, having directed it twice before and

He began writing it back in February and his recipe for a successful festive show was putting modern and local references into a traditional plot – with jokes for the adults as well as the children.”

The new 2016/17 season has got off to a flying start.
Although team fixtures have only just started, there is little movement in the leagues at present individual Club members have already managed to achieve amazing results.
In the first weekend of October, the Norfolk Championships were held at Tithe Barn, Horstead. Roy Hughes became Norfolk Champion for the second time after an exciting final game. David Owen won the Challengers cup. Several junior members of the Club also took part and performed to a high standard showing lots of promise for the future of local chess.
Over the summer months, the Club held a friendly tournament consisting of two rapid play games and two blitz games against each opponent. A blitz game consists of each player only having four minutes each on the clock - exciting stuff! This tournament was won by Henry Duncanson.
For more information on the club please visit https://sites.google.com/site/broadlandchessclub, we can also be found as Broadland Chess Club on either Facebook or Twitter.
The club meets at the Kings Head, Coltishall, Monday and Wednesday evenings. North Walsham Times 505 October 22nd 2016

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The branch has been very fortunate in recent years to have been left money by cat loving supporters who want to continue to help needy cats in our area. As the money has been left to the charity we do have to advise Cats Protection how it will be spent. When large amounts are received the money cannot be spent on day-to-day running expenses but used for specific purposes. One of the ways we have tried to make a difference is by running our £5 Neutering Campaign to ensure that we help people on low incomes and benefits to get their cats neutered. The money has also been used to pay for neutering feral colonies. At present, with the help of members of the public, we are dealing with three colonies. One of these colonies has been particularly challenging as we have, over the past 15 months, taken in over 50 kittens as well as neutering about 20 adults. Unfortunately, some of the kittens have eluded capture during this time and therefore, when they are eventually caught and neutered, need to be returned to site because they are too old to accept a change in lifestyle. With the help of a determined neighbour we will get them all in the end.
As a few of our pens are now quite old and need replacing, we are also using some of the money we have been left to purchase new pens. We are at present awaiting the delivery of new double pens at the homes of two of our fosterers. This means that, at present, we cannot take in as many cats because the existing pens have been dismantled, new bases have had to be laid as the new pens are bigger than the existing ones, and these have also been tiled. They should be in place by the time you read this, although we may still be waiting for electricity supplies to be reconnected. The new pens are made of UPVC rather than wood and should be easier to clean. If everything goes to plan we will include

diabetes. Being aware of the signs to look out for is very important, as are the things that we can do to reduce the incidence of the disease.
Our case this month, Molly, presented to the surgery with classic signs. She was an otherwise healthy female 12 year old cat who had suddenly started losing weight despite a ravenous appetite and she was drinking a great deal of water. Diabetes was first on our list of differentials and was confirmed through detecting glucose in a urine sample and then running a blood test to look at her blood glucose levels. Cats can develop Type II diabetes in the same way that people can and it happens that Molly was carrying rather a lot of weight prior to her illness and this is likely to be one of the contributing factors.

Once diagnosed we started her on twice daily insulin injections, her appetite and thirst have reduced and she has started to gain some weight again. Crucially we don't want her to gain too much weight as obesity increases the risk of diabetes and
there is a chance that once she is stabilised if we can keep her at a healthy weight the diabetes may even resolve completely without the need for continued medication.
November happens to be pet diabetes month, a nationwide scheme to raise awareness of the disease.
Their website www.petdiabetesmonth.co.uk has plenty of useful information on the condition. Alongside this we will be offering free diabetes clinics with our nursing team during the month of November, so if you are interested please call the surgery on 01692 403202.

Toll Barn Vets Macmillan Coffee Morning
Toll Barn Veterinary Centre opened its doors to a ‘coffee and cake’ lunch on Friday 30 September as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, and visitors of all ages came along and joined in by putting any diets to one side for a couple of hours, but all in a good cause!
A truly sumptuous selection of cakes from cream scones to apple tarts, custard tarts to ginger bread men, not to mention carrot cake, lemon drizzle cake and chocolate cake soon started to disappear (all of them voted as yummy), accompanied by a welcome cup of coffee or tea. A chat with friends old and new and a touch of sun meant that seating in the car park became quite popular for a while.
Phoenix Bird of Prey Rescue kindly brought
some of their owls and birds of prey along to add some spice and variety to the lunch, and became something of a photo attraction and to one of our lovely clients who made some boxes from which all proceeds went to Macmillans.
A huge thanks to all the bakers and helpers who gave so generously of their time and effort, and to North Walsham Times who kindly donated space to publicise the event, but above everything else, a HUGE vote of thanks to everyone who helped us to raise over £300 for the wonderful Macmillan cause.

This Girl Can Swim campaign proves great success at North Walsham
J’s WEDDING CARS
Twice weekly women-only sessions well-attended at local swimming pool
Surround your day with elegance and romance on your special day. Arrive in a beautiful authentic vintage car painted in ivory and black.
Swimming sessions for women only have been held since March this year at Victory Swim & Fitness Centre in North Walsham. The Friday morning sessions, part of the national This Girl Can campaign, have attracted up to 20 women per week.
The campaign, developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations, is a celebration of active women.
Victory is run by Places for People Leisure and owned by North Norfolk District Council. Cllr Becky Palmer, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said “It’s great to see these sessions are getting women and girls to the pool. It’s all about giving women opportunities to enjoy sports and exercise, whether very gentle or full-on, in a low-pressure environment.
1935 Austin Tickford Convertible
“There can be lots of different reasons why someone might not feel comfortable about exercising or about swimming, but this campaign is proving some of those barriers to exercising can be removed. We want to encourage and celebrate woman doing exercise – whatever their level.”

The women-only sessions take place Friday mornings from 9-10am at Victory Swim & Leisure Centre and cost £4.90 per session (the cost of a normal swim).
TEL:- 01263 587579
They are designed for women or girls of any age who want to exercise but may not usually take part in sport or exercise, feel self-conscious or can feel intimidated by sports-centred environments.
www.jweddingcars.co.uk
Stuart Jardine, General Manager at Victory Swim & Fitness Centre said “We are so pleased at how these sessions have grown, and that Places for People were able to secure this funding.
“From the moment ladies arrive at the pool, we want their experience to begin. We have considered every detail. Our friendly staff make sure everyone is shown where to go and make sure participants feel settled and comfortable.
“The sessions are relaxed, and fun, and a great way to start your day. The feedback has been amazing, This Girl Can Swim has certainly had a positive impact on these ladies’ wellbeing".
A trained activator is always on hand to greet participants at the sessions, guide them through how to get the most out of the swim session and is present throughout.
Participants can wear swimsuits, fitted t-shirts and Lycra-based leggings. And there’s no need to book. North Walsham Times 505 October 22nd 2016

North Walsham Table Tennis Key Doubles Win gives NWSCF a Draw
In the Second Division NWSCF’s John Chapman, Jake Woolston and Jack Bye hosted LCC Dolphin’s Steven Ratcliffe and Mick and Keegan Hammond. Chapman took his first League win in four against Ratcliffe and also for NWSCF Woolston beat Keegan Hammond in four. Bye took a brace and Woolston and Bye won a crucial doubles against the Hammonds in four to secure the draw. In the Premier Division at Hunworth Village Hall, Poacher’s David Foster and Andy and Laura Marsh hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Porritt and Werner Zivna. Elliott was edged out 15-13 in a terrific decider by Andy Marsh before finally overcoming Laura’s hitting to win 17-15, 7-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-1. Full houses from Foster and Andy Marsh saw Poachers to a 7-3 win.
In the First Division, LCC Crabs Kevin Cardy, Char Edwards and Robbie Birtwell hosted NWSCC’s Eric Dolden, Carrie Last and Joel Lodge. The first three battles went to the hosts with Edwards taken the distance by Last before later being beaten in four by Dolden. After originally leading the fourth 10-5 against
Lodge, Cardy took the set 14-12 to force a decider, which Lodge won 11-7. Last edged Birtwell 9-11, 12-10, 16-14, 12-10 and with a four set win for Lodge against Edwards, NWSCC went from trailing 0-3 to leading the match 4-3. However straight sets wins for Birtwell and Cardy against Dolden and Last respectively followed by a four set doubles win for the LCC pair meant Crabs clawed their way back to a 6-4 match win. NWSCE’s Andrew Weston and James and Ben Lester hosted LCC Lobster’s Chris Gould, David Thompson and Tim Dawson. Each Lobster took a brace while James Lester picked up a maximum for the hosts including a win in five against Dawson. Gould and Dawson won a see-saw doubles against the Lesters 6-11, 13-11, 3-11, 13-11, 11-7 to complete a 7-3 win for the Sheringham side.
A Knockout Singles Cup second round derby at North Walsham Sports Centre saw NWSCD’s Stuart Hook and the Phil’s Mole and Stone host NWSCA’s Andy Beane, John Vaughan and Tom Baldock-Yaxley with Beane winning the opener in four against Stone. Mole had a
Despite their recent heavy 40 -16 defeat at high flying Chingford, the Vikings have still made a good start to the season. After six games they were fourth in London One North, five points behind third placed Brentwood. Leaders Tring visited Scottow on 1 October and were fortunate to leave with a 10-9 victory. Under new Head of Rugby James Brooks the side are playing some exciting rugby enjoyed by both players and spectators, averaging five tries a game, twice running in nine.
Matt Hodgson (pictured) was September's Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. The twenty year old commented "I'm really enjoying the environment at Scottow. It is great to be part of such a tightknit team all working together to achieve our individual and collective potential."
The Raiders, who won promotion last year, have won two, lost two and

chance to take a two set lead against Vaughan but the former President uncorked a vintage shot from around the 1975 era to save the set. The match continued to fizz and ultimately saw Vaughan take his third match-point to win 10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8. NWSCA won the next three battles to take the tie but the highlight of the evening came in the dead rubber that was played between Vaughan and Hook. Vaughan tried everything in his power such as moving the table and adjusting the net but despite missing three match-point chances at 10-7 in the fourth, Hook fully deserved his 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-9 victory that concluded with a lucky edge. NWSCA are joined in the quarter-finals by NWSCF who thanks to a bye and then a walkover have yet to hit a ball!
