North Walsham Play

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

North Walsham Play is a registered Charity (1167444) set up to improve the play parks in and around North Walsham. We are working hard to on our first priority which is to see a £40,000 play project installed on Woodville Park (Off Hadfield Road and accessible via the bypass underpass). Of the £40,000 funding target in excess of £34,000 has already been raised via a mixture of donations, grants and charitable gift aid contributions. North Walsham Town Council has also given the charity its full approval and has been very supportive so far in terms of financial pledges of support and advice.

The proposed play park for Woodville (see photo) has been designed taking into account the work undertaken by school pupils in the past 18-24 months.

After Woodville, North Walsham Play will be focusing on the Memorial Park – to redevelop the small play area near the community centre entrance/ exit whilst also looking to improve the outside exercise equipment plus much more. After this, we will focus our efforts on Trackside.

North Walsham Play is passionate about ensuring North Walsham children (and their families) have access to exciting, innovative and inclusive play parks for all that are easily accessible come rain or shine! We recently had a stand outside Sainsbury’s. A massive thank you to everyone who supported us. We raised an impressive £184.10, which has

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Christmas is getting closer so Happisburgh Lifeboat Station is coming to your aid with a Christmas Mince Pie and Open Day on Saturday 12 November, to get your Christmas cards, calendars, diaries and lots of stocking filler ideas. You will also have the opportunity to tour the Station Boat House, to have a close up view of the Lifeboats. After all that, there will be mince pies, pastries, coffee and tea available. So make a note of Saturday 12 November, 1pm to 4pm at Happisburgh Lifeboat Station and Shop, Cart Gap, Happisburgh. Hope to see you there. If you are unable to come on the day don’t worry as the shop will be open 10am to 4pm daily until 30 October and from 31t October till Christmas 11am till 3pm daily. The RNLI is only able to carry out its role of saving lives at sea by people supporting us with donations and fundraising. To this end Happisburgh Lifeboat Station is setting up a Fundraising Team to help raise funds for the Station and the RNLI as a whole. We are particularly interested to hear from someone who would be willing to take on the role of Fundraising Coordinator. We are looking for people to become part of this team, so if you have time to spare and would like to join our team of volunteers then please call Philip Smith on 07766007936 evenings or weekends or E-mail on lofty273@googlemail.com with your details and what you can bring to the Team. The fundraising Team is as important as the crew manning the Lifeboat itself, so come and join the RNLI family. PLEASE PUT ME UP IN YOUR CAR, AT WORK OR AT HOME!

Pumpkin Walk

Swanton Abbott Pre-School held its annual 'Sponsored Pumpkin Walk' on the last day of term.

During the week, the children hand-picked a pumpkin from a local field and then took them back to Pre-School where they designed and carved them themselves. On the night, the children dressed up and walked twice around the playing field where their pumpkins, lit by tea lights, brightened the dark night and guided them along the way.

of the Pre-School.

Afterwards, children and parents/carers enjoyed home-made pumpkin soup and delicious cakes kindly donated by families

Lots of fun was had by parents/carers, staff and especially the children who took part in apple-bobbing and had spooky spiders and ghastly ghouls painted on their excited faces.

Swanton Abbott Pre-School is open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm and Fridays 9am to 12noon. If you would like further information or to arrange a visit please contact Teresa on 01692 538987.

Harvest at Kingfisher

Last month the children at Kingfisher Kids Club Pre-School took in vegetables for their Harvest Festival Collection. As each child brought a new fruit or vegetable in, this was used as a learning opportunity at circle times, using their senses, to smell, touch, see and taste. Sally Lee from Kingfisher continues ‘we read stories about vegetables and peeled and chopped as we made vegetable soup, we used the vegetables for crafts and painting. Some of the children had never seen some of the vegetables before like squash and pumpkin but even the babies under 1 enjoyed feeling the bright red peppers and chillies, the orange pumpkins and the peachy squash, alongside the usual cabbage, carrots, apples and potatoes. At the end of two weeks of collecting vegetables, we arranged a visit to Furze Hill Salvation Army home and took five children with our two baskets of food donations to the home to give to the residents. This turned out to be as enjoyable, if not more rewarding, as the children took pieces of fruit and vegetables and spoke to the residents one by one about what they had brought in their baskets. The residents were overjoyed at these little smiling faces and communicated very well with the children. We finished off our visit with the children singing a variety of nursery rhymes, some pre rehearsed and some requested by the residents who in turn sang along, some at the top of their voices. As the Manager of Kingfisher Kids Club, I felt that this was so fulfilling to both the children and the residents as we shared our community spirit. The Manager of Furze Hill, also delighted with the interaction, requested further visits from the children and the event was rewarded with a thank you email from Furze Hill : “A huge thank you to you and all the children who visited our residents at Furze Hill House this morning. It really gave a lot of pleasure to the residents interacting with the children and listening to them sing! Wonderful!” We look forward to visiting again in the very near future.

New 2016 Sir William Paston Scholars receive their awards

In 2006 the Trustees of the Paston Foundation created a scholarship scheme to mark Paston’s 400th birthday, bearing the name of our founder, Sir William Paston. Ten years on, the awards are still an important part of the Sixth Form College.

This year, 25 scholarships worth £500 were awarded to new gifted and talented students. The Paston Sixth Form College students study A levels and BTEC courses as a preliminary to going to a top university. This year, 25% of students at Paston went on to top Universities, including three going on to Oxbridge. In the current year, 18 students have sent applications into Oxbridge.

The scholars had a special lunch to receive their scholarships. At the lunch, Richard Dennison, Corporation and Paston College Foundation member, presented the awards.

The students use the awards in a range of different ways to support their learning at Paston.

Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “It is good to remind students of the legacy left by Sir William Paston. Again, this year, we have a large number of students gaining the awards”. The Scholars this year are :

Tom Nudd Cathy Sole Katie Burt Laurence Fenn Rosie Hallatt Amy Patterson Chloe Tovell Florence Bates Kieran Davis Samuel Goddard Theo Oxley

NEWLY QUALIFIED ENGINE DRIVER PRESENTS TOP AWARDS TO SCOUTS

On Sunday 9 October, the North East Norfolk District Scouts Top Awards Celebration took place at the Bure Valley Railway in Aylsham, courtesy of the Bure Valley Railway Team.

Forty young people, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers, received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, and a Young Leader from 1st Aylsham Group, Rebecca Morgan, received her very special Young Leader Belt, for completing all of her Young Leader training, from District Young Leader Manager, Tom Hadley (himself a Platinum Chief Scout Award Holder).

Parents and family members also attended. Two groups of Beavers,

Cubs and Scouts were each given a fascinating insight into the workings of steam engines and a tour of the engine sheds and workshops, and several of the youngsters had a chance to be drivers and firemen, and of course to blow the whistle several times!

They were also able to enjoy Thomas the Tank Engine displays, have photos taken with the many steam engines and take a 45 minute train ride through to Wroxham Station, where they were given a special tour of the signal box before their

This year District Commissioner Paul Henriksen was joined by newly qualified Bure Valley Driver, 25 year old Scott Bunting, who presented the Certificates and special ‘Bure Valley’ goodie bags to the young people. Scott qualified as a driver in April 2016 and has been volunteering with the railway for the past four years.

Norfolk Coast Partnership Ponds Project - volunteers required

We are looking for volunteers to take part in pond survey work in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

In the first instance, we are looking for 2-3 people this year into next to work on a pilot to test a recording methodology. This will be followed next year in the spring by a survey of the coast's ponds for which we seek assistance from several volunteers. Ponds are such an important habitat, serving as stepping stones in the wider landscape linking areas and providing refuges for wildlife. We need to know more about them, 12

where they are, what condition they are in and what wildlife they are supporting.

If you would like to find out more or be involved in this work - either the 2016 pilot, the 2017 survey, or both - contact Gemma Clark gemma.clark@norfolk.gov.uk You do not need to have an ecological background as the survey isn't long and is very straightforward, a briefing session can be provided beforehand. North Walsham & District Community Archive

North Walsham & District Community Archive has always endeavoured to collect as much photographic history of the town as possible, to keep it safe for future generations and to make it available to the public. Last year we produced a high quality calendar for 2016. This seemed like a great idea for several reasons:

Firstly it's a great way to safeguard photos for future generations because it doesn't matter how you store photos, all types of media can deteriorate, become damaged or be lost. We digitise all the photos we find to the best possible quality we can and then we make back-up copies, but the more copies of these photos that exist, spread over so many locations, means their chances of survival are that much greater.

Secondly, a calendar also supports our mission statement to make the photos available for all. We have a very successful website and Facebook group but we are aware that not everybody has access to the internet so the calendar will allow absolutely anybody to own copies of these photos.

Finally, a calendar is a great way to raise funds for the Archive group.

Our hunch was proved right last year and the calendar was a fantastic success! There has been great demand to produce one for 2017 so that is what we have done. We received lots of favourable feedback from the first calendar plus a couple of suggestions to make it even better. These have been implemented into this year's edition. We also

ran a poll on our Facebook group (which has around 4,400 members now) to find whether people preferred the sepia photo reproductions (as last year) or purely black & white. As the majority asked for black & white that is what we have produced.

We picked 12 gorgeous historic photos of the North Walsham area, from our collection of thousands, taken by respected local photographers such as Les Edwards and Fred Mace. We then scanned them professionally, directly from the original negatives where possible. Choosing the photos to use - to create an interesting and attractive set - was a vigorous process, making sure we included iconic scenes, lost scenes and people. Final choices were mainly based on the popularity of the photos that have been shared on our Facebook group over the last few years.

Each photo is litho printed at full A4 size on coated paper (to give the best possible quality reproduction) with a well-designed, A4 calendar below for each month. We are really proud to say this is a 100% local product. years and took over North Walsham printers Rounce & Wortley a few years back.)

This year we have produced a limited run of only 400 copies which are available from our website www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk or from House of Hobbies and Express Printing & Stationery in the Market Place. They will also be available at local events between now and Christmas including events at The Community Centre and The Atrium. Calendars are £6 each. In addition, we still have Christmas cards featuring four suitably festive North Walsham scenes and a handful of the popular DVD "Memories of North Walsham" available. All can be found on our website.

The North Walsham & District Community Archive has been running many years now, managed by a hard working group of volunteers with backgrounds in history, photographs and the local area but it does incur costs from time to time for equipment, insurance, stationery, organisation of exhibitions, etc. It is hoped this calendar will raise the money to keep the group functioning productively for some time to come. Our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/ NorthWalshamArchive/ has now been running for three years and is as active as ever! Enjoyed your summer? Now it is time to clear up sun-damaged skin

A nice tan can make your skin glow in the summer, but as the golden colour fades our skin is left a little more damaged and we enter autumn looking a little older than last year. As we age, these factors take an increasing toll on our skin, and the effects are especially noticeable on our faces, neck, hands and décolletage.

This is why autumn is a good time to assess your skin care regimen. As temperatures drop and the air becomes drier, your skin naturally loses more moisture, especially when the central heating kicks in.

We see patients present with dry, wrinkled, uneven and sun-damaged skin. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take and simple procedures are available that protect your skin, correct issues resulting from sun damage, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The following products and procedures will help boost your skin’s health and appearance and carry you with confidence into the winter months.

Use sun protection creams with good SPF. Perhaps the best anti-aging products available today are those that contain some kind of retinoid. This is a class of vitamin A derivatives that really do help to improve the appearance of your skin. You can also treat mild cases at home by using facial cleansers and creams containing miniscule “grains” to exfoliate and mimic the effects of microdermabrasion. Look for glycolic acid in cleansers and peels to help smooth out your complexion. For better results you can try these cost effective procedures of microdermabrasion, gycolic peels and LED light in the clinic also.

You might also consider IPL and laser photo rejuvenation and skin toning. This virtually painless, non-invasive treatment addresses a variety of skin issues from sun damage and uneven skin tone to hyperpigmentation. It is a very effective procedure for evening out skin tone and reducing signs of sun damage such as brown spots and freckles.

A combination of aging, sun exposure and lack of hydration can result in dry skin that makes fine lines, wrinkles and other imperfections more noticeable. Over time, the skin tends to visibly lack fullness and elasticity.

While over-the-counter products are great for maintenance and fine for minor issues, injectable dermal fillers and skin boosters offer a more intensive treatment. There are quite a few options available, some more effective than others and each offering a slightly different result.

• Restylane is an injectable filler that smooths out wrinkles and facial folds. It is also used as a skin booster to hydrate and plump up dry skin. • Radiesse is a dermal filler that smooths out fine lines, adds dimension and fullness to skin, and helps smooth acne scars. • Emervel volume is the newest injectable filler on the market that adds fullness to areas of the face and temples that have lost volume, sunken cheeks, and deep wrinkles.

All of these non-surgical procedures have short recovery times and very noticeable results. We can go over the best options to help you achieve your specific goals.

Happisburgh church. On 18 February 1807 the Yarmouth Revenue Cutter Hunter was caught in a storm which dashed her onto Haisbro Sand. She was then driven towards the shore and beached at Cart Gap. All hands were lost.

High Spirits, Ghosts and Legends by David Stannard

David presented his talk with the aid of slides and text, reflecting the stories of many strange occurrences, fables and legends all associated with North Norfolk.

His first story was of the Wandering Knights of Ingham, depicted in the panelling of St Nicholas Church in Ingham, in which monks are dancing around and destroying the gravestones, which are said to have been built into the fabric of Waxham Barn.

He then turned to the dreadful prophecy of the Hempstead Seer, a kennel man whose hounds devoured him while he was drunk.

Then the strange case of the 1570 Eccles Church, which disappeared during a very bad storm, leaving

the steeple to stand for many years until finally in 1895 it toppled into the sea. Many local residents gather on the site annually on the last Sunday in August to commemorate its fall.

Happisburgh has many strange tales. One is the apparition of the legless Smuggler, which appears from nowhere and disappears into a well, where a severed head was once discovered. On 20 December 1770, HMS Peggy a 14 ton sloop grounded near Town Gap - 59 men survived but 32 were lost and lie buried in Happisburgh’s Churchyard. On 16 March 1801 HMS Invincible, a third rate 74 gun ship, sailed from Great Yarmouth heavily laden and struck Hammond's Knoll near Haisbro Sand - 400 men perished. Their bodies washed up along the coast, and were given a mass grave on the north side of

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at the Hill House Happisburgh. He is credited with inspiring the legend of Black Shuck, the name given to a ghostly black dog that roams the coastline and countryside of East Anglia.

Jonathan Balls was a mass-poisoner in the l830s/40s. He lived in Happisburgh and was murdering everyone in his family as well as work colleagues and people from the village. It was discovered he had even done away with himself, thereby avoiding the Law.

schemes in the ‘dark corners’ of our financial system and removing the ‘veil of secrecy’ under which criminals operate. The language has a strangely JK Rowling quality to it. The utterances of Donald J. Trump have once again brought the question of whether paying tax is optional/stupid/moral into the arena. Or, put the other way, whether not paying tax is optional/clever/immoral.

The distinction between the terms ‘tax avoidance’ and ‘tax evasion’ is becoming ever more distorted. The terms are now often used interchangeably, altering what has historically been a clear distinction. In the past, tax avoidance has been viewed as a lawful means of reducing a person’s tax liability. It has been a long-established principle since the 1936 case of IRC -v- Duke of Westminster. This has been the subject of much public criticism in recent times, as well-known entertainers and large multinational corporations seek to mitigate their tax liabilities, acting entirely within the law. The use by politicians of the word ‘morality’ has crept into the tax arena.

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice”.

If you require advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you

require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

A hard-working tradesman who under-declares his income might been found guilty of tax evasion, whereas the wily business-man who set up a ‘genius’ scheme (with the help of his professional advisers) would argue (Trump-like) that he is cleverly arranging his affairs ‘tax-efficiently’.

Offences of fraudulently evading various taxes are not limited to prescribed law, but are retained within the common law offence of cheating the public revenue. The courts have prison-sentencing powers up to life imprisonment in England and Wales (but not in Scotland!). This broad offence dates back to medieval times. Most ‘cheating’ offences now fall under the Theft Act 1968 which created the offence of obtaining property by deception. This offence has been retained for cases where there may not be a specific statutory tax-evasion offence, and most likely will be reserved for high-profile cases involving scams or well-known personalities.

The international objective is floridly described as eliminating tax avoidance and ‘aggressive’ tax

Local charity Support Cambodia, which helps disadvantaged communities in North-West Cambodia, is currently running their annual Appeal.

All the money donated will provide vitamins and basic necessities (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, sanitary towels, tissues, combs, pens, pencils, notebooks etc). The vitamins will be bought in bulk in the UK and the toiletries/stationery bought in Cambodia. Everything will be distributed during the charity's project visit in January 2017, mostly in rural villages to families who are unable to afford these 'luxuries' on a regular basis. Support Cambodia takes no administration costs from charitable donations so every penny given to the Appeal will go directly to the neediest families.

To contribute to the Appeal please go to www.supportcambodia.org.uk or phone 01263 577784 for details. Support Cambodia will have a stall at North Walsham Christmas Fair on 26 November selling Carol's famous mulled wine and mince pies. See you there!

New Norfolk Beers Shop now open in Sheringham The Giddy Goat shop owner John Morgan opened the doors to his store for the first time in mid-September.

John himself comes from Berkshire. Attracted by Norfolk’s beautiful beaches and, of course the beers, he has settled in North Norfolk. The Giddy Goat is John’s first beer shop.

The shop offers beers and ciders from over 15 local breweries in the Norfolk area. John’s rule for his suppliers is that they must be small and Norfolk based.

The Giddy Goat’s suppliers include the popular Beeston Brewery, well respected, with a range of year round and winter ales on the shelves and the Wagtail Brewery, which is based in Attleborough which has many strong Ales to try and has been going strong for 8 or 9

years and, like many local breweries, started as a hobby and blossomed into a thriving business. Some of the interestingly named beers like ‘Chocolate Nutter’ and ‘Hare of the Dog’ are from The Whynot Brewery which is based in Norwich. The Tipples Brewery from Salhouse has a large range and their ‘Black Moth Stout’ at 7.6% is one of the strongest drinks available in the shop.

There is also Cider from The Norfolk Cider Company from Wroxham, which has been in production for over 30 years, and Whin Hill Cider who are based in Wells.

Poppyland is based in Cromer whilst relatively recent to the market they have already won awards for their beers and do

a changing and interesting range of gluten free ales.

The beers in the shop are arranged vertically by supplier on the shop shelves. The bottles are further arranged vertically by beer type with lighter beers to the top and the dark beers to the bottom, and go from 3.2% up to 7.6%. Come on by for a look. All beers are bottle conditioned, 80-90% are vegan suitable. The beers are sold in presentation boxes or can be bought as single bottles.

‘Stubbs Mugs’ and various Breweries beer glasses are also sold as associated products again from Norfolk suppliers.

The Giddy Goat is situated on 2, The Courtyard, Station Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RF.

To check stock call John Morgan on 01263 478600 or mobile 07786 288916. Opening hours Mon – Saturday 10-5 Sunday 11 – 4. 23

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

The new bases were laid and tiled and the new pens have arrived and, at the time of writing, electricity has been reconnected at one site, and the cats should be back inside by the time you read this. I have been to see these pens today and the photo which accompanies this article does not do them justice. The pens are much bigger than our original ones, have non slip tiles on the floors and will be very easy to clean. There have been a few challenges at the other site but hopefully the electrical work will be completed soon and these pens too will be back in operation.

Although we still have several cats to catch at the feral colony mentioned last time, we are getting close to catching all the cats at another colony, with only one, or possibly two, more cats to catch. However, the last ones are always the hardest as they will be wary of going into one of the traps, having seen several companions caught in this way. Results are often achieved in these circumstances if the trap is taken away for a few days, but there are no guarantees. Two of our fosterers have been actively involved in catching the cats in this colony as they live close by. Unfortunately we, ourselves, are not always able to help in this way due to distances involved and rely on cat caring people to help. We have now been Grooming Parlour advised of another colony which needs our help and are Full Grooming & investigating the Hydrobathing possibility of helping Kerstin Rogers Available cats in yet another 01692 501212 area. Norwich City FC Review

Will this result come to haunt us at the end of the season, writes Joel Lodge?

Norwich have endured a month of mixed results after a heart-breaking stoppage.

The game started off with Newcastle absolutely dominating the opening stages of the game and the entire first half really, as Dwight Gayle went close on a number of occasions to try and put Newcastle ahead.

Gayle finally broke the deadlock after 24 minutes after some poor defensive work by Sebastien Bassong, who has become more of a liability for Norwich over the past few years.

Newcastle absolutely dominated Norwich for the remainder of the half, however, in the last minute of the first half, Newcastle conceded a penalty which Graham Dorrans then swiftly converted, giving the Canaries a lifeline to get back into the game after what can only be described as a dismal first half performance.

Norwich then scored 2 goals after the break, as Jerome curled in a beautiful effort from a tight angle, with the third goal coming after Jacob Murphy’s shot took a deflection and left Karl

Darlow with no chance.

Norwich seemed to be plain sailing but immediately after the 3rd goal Newcastle got another back to put the pressure was on Norwich in what was a frantic end to the game. Newcastle managed to win the game in the last couple of minutes in extra time, which was a heart wrenching moment for the Norwich fans who made the long trip up there as Gouffran and Gayle were the architects to Norwich’s downfall.

Medal success for North Walsham Gymnastics Club

This year has been very busy and successful for North Walsham Gymnastics Club.

Head Coach Alexis Thurston said she was so proud of her gymnasts and “our regional finalists really proved that they deserved beyond a doubt to be part of the competition, lifting their game to the highest level”.

They continue to progress with their plans to move to a purpose built gym in the town, whilst both the general and competitive gymnasts have represented the Club in various competitions. Earlier this year, 25 girls and 5 boys competed in a general competition at Easton where an amazing total of 27 medals were won on individual apparatus.

More recently, congratulations go to the 17 competition gymnasts who competed at the Norfolk County Levels Championships during September and October. By spending up to nine hours a week training, Amy Mann, Olivia Owen, Olivia Shingles and Layla Terry success came with overall medals being won by Lola Gillett, Layla Terry, Olivia Owen, Olivia Shingles and Amy Mann. All medallists, except the younger age level 7 (Lola), went on to represent the Club and county at the regional finals in Ipswich over the weekend of 15/16 October. Special congratulations go to Amy, who has been with the Club for over 10 years, for being crowned regional champion on the tricky beam apparatus.

The girls have been well supported by parents, fellow gymnasts and coaches, who have all shown a fantastic team spirit throughout the year.

North Walsham Table Tennis Six got the distance as NWSCA beat Poachers

A marathon match in the Premier Division saw NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Howard Lupton host Poacher’s Chris Fuller, Andy Marsh and David Foster with Fuller winning the opener 13-11 in the fourth against Beane. Six battles went to five sets including all three of Foster’s who beat Lupton from two down before losing from two up against Beane. Foster also won a hard-hitting contest against Baldock-Yaxley 12-10, 11-4, 5-11, 5-11, 11-7. Baldock-Yaxley picked up a brace with another two wins in five and joined Beane to edge the doubles 12-10, 8-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-9 against Fuller and Foster to conclude NWSCA’s 7-3 win. NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Werner Zivna and Richard Westgate hosted Mundesley A’s Peter Betts and the Paul’s Light and Price with Light’s backhand snaps proving decisive in the opener as he beat Elliott in five. Price took a brace but lost out in four to maximum man Westgate. NWSCB won 7-3 with Zivna and Elliott taken

the distance by Light and Betts respectively. Frank Weston made his debut playing up two divisions and stepping in with just two hours notice as he joined the Phil’s Mole and Stone – but what an introduction to have as NWSCD travelled to Gresham’s School A to face the strong all-round game of Robin Thaxter, the lightning returns of Jonas Lee (playing up) and the wit of Haken Bennell. Bennell’s serve won the key points as he edged Stone 9-11, 11-7, 14-12, 11-8 but the hosts were in control during the rest of their 10-0 win.

Weston returned to action later in the week playing up this time in the First Division as he joined NWSCE’s James and Ben Lester away to Crosscourts and he picked up his first win in straight against Derek Sidaway. Rod Goffin took a maximum for the hosts but Ben Lester was involved in some dramatic contests as firstly he recovered from 0-5 down in the decider to edge out Keith Beswick 17-15 before joining James Lester for a crucial

The Vikings bounced back from two successive defeats to overwhelm Ruislip 61 - 0 on 22 October, Jordan Mustard

After the score had been stuck on 19 - 0 for more than half an hour they suddenly went up a gear to run in six tries in the final 20 minutes. This victory kept them fourth in London North One, just a point behind Brentwood who visit Scottow on 5 November.

The Ruislip game was Will Hodgson's (pictured) 100th game for the Club. In his sixth season he is now playing no 8 rather than centre, following the departure of last season's captain Tom Williams who has moved to London.

The Raiders are fourth in their league too after beating Great YarmouthBroadland 29 -3.
