Charity Fund Presentation at Sunday Market The historic market town of North Walsham hosts two regular markets – the long-established market on Thursdays, and the more recently launched Sunday Market.

The latter was established in 2014 as a result of cooperation between North Walsham Town Council, which holds the market rights for the town, and Regenerate North Walsham. Nominally, a farmers’ market, it is in fact open to food and

craft stalls of all types, with a strong regular base that draws good footfall into the town centre on the last Sunday of each month. As well as the stalls, visitors will usually find live musical entertainment provided by local performers. The raison d’etre for the Sunday market is to raise funds for local charities, while remaining self-funding. To this end, half of the proceeds from each month’s market goes to a charity fund, and a presentation is made quarterly to a local group in accordance with the theme for the year. The charity theme for this year is ‘supporting the elderly’. Our photo show Town Mayor Barry Hester (2nd left), accompanied by Councillor Robert Murphy (far left) presenting a cheque for £800 to Linda Groves and members of The Voyager Group, which supports older residents in the town. In addition to the monthly Sunday markets, the annual Christmas market, this year scheduled for Sunday 18 December, gives 100% of its stall fees to the Town Mayors chosen charity for the year. For 2016/17, the current incumbent Councillor Barry Hester

is splitting his charity fund between the North Walsham Dementia Support Group and the St Nicholas Church East Window (World War I Memorial Window) Restoration Project.

The Sunday markets open from 10am and run until approximately 2pm in Market Place, with free parking at Vicarage Street Car Park provided through an arrangement between the Town Council and North Norfolk District Council. Further details, including pitch application forms, can be obtained from the Market Manager, Mr Nigel Clarke, at markets@northwalsham-town.co.uk or by contacting North Walsham Town Council on 01692 404114.

Sunflowers and Seeds

Eleven children from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham were thrilled to be invited on a tour around North Walsham Garden Centre.

The children had entered a ‘Grow a Sunflower’ competition over the summer holidays, which was organised by Deputy Head Mrs Ashby. It followed on from a ‘Mini Garden’ project in the summer term. The children’s gardens were displayed around the community including the garden centre, doctors’ surgeries and library. On hearing about the competition, the Garden Centre kindly donated prizes to all the entrants and a special prize was awarded to the tallest sunflower. This went to Grace Cutting, whose sunflower reached 3.2 metres. Ben Youngs, who took the children on the tour, presented Grace with a spade, gardening gloves, seeds and a special certificate.

The children were in awe the minute they walked through the door and were mesmerized by the array of plants and trees. Callum Gregory, one of the Year 5 entrants, could not hide his excitement and said ‘this is totally amazing! I never knew there were so many trees and plants’. The children thoroughly enjoyed their outing and were very grateful to North Walsham Garden Centre for their generosity.

North Walsham Mothers’ Union

The speaker at our October meeting was the Rev Rachael Dines, the newest member of our clergy team who joined us this summer as curate.

Rachael shared with us some of the experiences that helped to lead her to her current path. She spent the first 11 years of her life living in Glasgow where her father a Church of England minister had his first parish as the minister in an English Church. The wide spread congregation was very supportive and obviously made a lasting impression upon the young Rachael who was the eldest of three children. When Rachael was 11, the family moved to a parish in Lowestoft, which is where she lived until she left home at the age of 19. Rachael took a gap year before university and spent some of that time working as an au pair in Israel before going on to teacher training in Gloucestershire. With a wealth of experience behind her Rachael was ready to follow her present course and we all hope she will be very happy with us here in North Walsham.

Affordable Drainage Solutions

Our members got together at the end of October to fill shoe boxes with gifts for the charity Link to Hope. The boxes will be distributed to families and the elderly in Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria and the Ukraine. We exceeded last year’s total and managed to fill 60 boxes. Our next meeting will be our Annual Review on Tuesday 8 November followed by our Advent Carol Service on 13 December. We meet at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Room. New members and visitors can be sure of a warm welcome, for further details please contact Ann on 01692 402705.

Norman Lamb - NHS maternity care in crisis The Government must take urgent action reverse the growing crisis in NHS maternity care, Norman Lamb MP has warned, after ministers confirmed that the number of student midwives fell by more than 300 last year.

In response to a written parliamentary question from Mr. Lamb, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Health, the Minister of State for Health Philip Dunne revealed that there were just 6,350 student midwives training at the end of 2015/16. This compares to 6,662 in the previous year, amounting to fall in the number of student midwives of almost 5%.

The figures were revealed on the same day that new maternity ratings were published, showing that maternity services in 74% of CCGs are in need of improvement.

A recent report by the Royal College of Midwives also found that some maternity units are ‘dangerous’ as a result of overstretched staff and poor working conditions, warning that the NHS is facing an exodus of demoralised and overworked midwives.

The Government has published an action plan for ‘Safer maternity care’ to drive up the quality and safety of maternity services in the NHS, but Mr. Lamb has warned that ministers must provide evidence that the situation is improving quickly.

He said “The alarming decline in the number of student midwives could have dangerous consequences when maternity services are already buckling under pressure. It is even more concerning given the risk that fewer staff will come from other parts of Europe following the Brexit vote. The blunt truth is that the NHS will not be able to properly care for mothers and their babies unless we are training enough midwives. New mothers are not being given the care and attention they deserve because staff are exhausted and rushed off their feet, and this must be addressed as a number one priority. The recent measures announced by the Government are welcome, but there will need to be immediate evidence that progress is being made. We cannot afford to let this crisis turn into a catastrophe. The Secretary of State must provide cast-iron assurances that more midwives will be trained next year. After the removal of student bursaries, it is vital that new incentives are put in place to ensure that midwifery remains a viable, attractive and rewarding career path for people from all backgrounds.”

North Walsham Historical Society Social History of the Broads by Simon Partridge

Simon presented his talk with the aid of old Broads photographs.

The Broads are at least 2000 years old and are constantly changing. Their centre was St Benet’s Abbey, which was the only abbey not destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries. The Abbey was both rich and powerful and owned vast tracts of land, much of it yielded peat, the digging of which left pits that flooded forming the Broads. The current Bishop of Norwich is also the Abbot of St Benet’s.

We were then shown a picture of a reed lighter on Marsham Broad. Reed cutting was a major industry on the broads, as well as marsh hay, which was sent to London initially by wherry, as fodder for the Handsome cab horses. Wherries, known as ‘Black Sailed Traders’ are clinker built vessels with overlapping planks. In later years in summer, many were temporarily converted into pleasure vessels by sweeping out the hold and installing furniture and beds, even a piano. They, in turn, were superseded by the ‘Wherry Yacht’ with white sails.

Next, we saw a photo of the first ‘Sugar Beet Mill’, which was also an ice house, at Cantley, built by a Scandinavian company because of its proximity to both the river and railway. Another wooden ice house was built at Surlingham in 1833. A photo of ‘Braydon Viaduct’, a single track swing bridge, which carried a train mainly for early visitors to Norfolk by rail. It was controlled by signal boxes at each end. Its opening was further controlled by ships passing through it, and unusually having right of way.

In 1988 the Broads Authority was founded, they took over the responsibility for keeping the adjacent land dry, this was done by installing a variety of different sized types of pumps. Other Broads part time occupations were eel catching and shooting wild owl in large numbers, using a large muzzle loading gun mounted upon a punt. Lastly, the location of the ‘Red Light’ district in Norwich between Burr Street and Kings Street was no accident, but because it allowed the local prostitutes to ply their trade to the wherry men.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

‘One of the most familiar radio broadcasts is the shipping forecast, regularly broadcast four time daily, lasting three minutes and twenty seconds, comprising three hundred and fifty to three hundred seventy words’. This was the subject expounded upon by Tony Diamond at last month’s North Walsham Probus Club meeting.

Tony’s interest in meteorology was aroused during his school days when he discovered that his maths teacher could be distracted from his subject by questions relating to the weather. Not surprisingly perhaps, Tony’s presentation was strongly influenced by a sense of Irish humour.

Coastal shipping has traditionally played a vital part in the UK’s economy and the loss of shipping due to storm is still a major hazard. Lloyds of London were happy to assist in financing the first weather forecasting station based in Norwich in 1859, pioneered by Admiral Fitzroy. The area covered was known as Finisterre. It was relocated to Slough in 2001. At about the same period the barometer was introduced, known as the ‘Fitzroy Barometer.’ It also became associated with ‘Mad Hatters disease’ caused by the excessive exposure to mercury. It was previously confined mainly to employees working in the hat industry, which relied on mercury to work the felt.

Happisburgh lighthouse is the dividing point between sea area Humber, to the north and Thames to the south. Shipping forecasts have a strong connection to Henry Blogg, the Cromer lifeboatman, responsible for the saving of 873 lives during his long career as coxswain.

Gale warnings played a significant role in the Thames area in 1953 and more recently 2013, although radar is now an important feature. The weather forecasting station at Bawdsey, Suffolk, became the first radar station at the beginning of the Second World War and made a considerable contribution to the success of the Battle of Britain . Hitler hated the weather forecasts, something demonstrated by his desire to raze the Needles station, unsuccessfully.

Our speaker also reminded members that the sea area North Utsire was not only the ancestral home of Marilyn Monroe but also provided the Guano dung, a vital constituent of semtex. Sightings of the ‘Flying Dutchman’ in the vicinity of Dogger Bank and the German Bight were suggested or maybe this was simply Irish blarney!

The Club next meets on 23 November at Community Centre, when new members will be cordially welcomed. Ted Gadsden

Free Car Parking Boost for Christmas Shopping

Millfield Pre-school, South Rise, North Walsham, NR28 0EE, Charity No. 1072455!!

Free car parking will be provided across the district to encourage more people to come and shop in town centres in the run up to Christmas.

The free weekend car parking sessions will be at: • North Walsham - Saturday 26 November and Saturday 24 December • Cromer - Saturday 3 December and 10 December • Fakenham - Saturday 3 December and Sunday 4 December • Stalham – Saturday 10 December and Sunday 11 December • Wells – Saturday 3 December and Sunday 4 December • Holt – Sunday 11 December and Sunday 18 December • Sheringham – Saturday 17 December and Sunday 18 December

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “Encouraging more people into the high street is vital and these free Christmas car parking weekends are designed to do just that and make shopping less stressful by shopping locally. By providing the free car parking sessions my hope is that we help to attract more shoppers into our town centres and support our local economy by using our excellent local shops.”

The dates were agreed following consultation with the town councils. We would be so grateful if you would be able to help us with this worthy cause and donate a small gift, child’s book or toy, unwrapped from a baby to a teenager. All we ask, is that you pop it into the branch unwrapped by 10 December.

We really hope this year’s appeal will be even more successful than last year and we can make this Christmas an extra special one and put a smile on the faces of local children and families supported by Break.

Thank you in advance for your support.

With kind regards Nina and the team C.A.S. Travel, Sheringham.

1. Firstly make sure that you have boiled then mashed your potatoes to a 500g measurement. 2. When potatoes are ready, mix with the flour, eggs and salt into a dough. The dough should look like a loose pasta. 3. Pull off little amounts and roll into little balls. Put to the side in a bowl to rest.

4. While this is happening, reduce the cream in a 01263 824555 pan until it is a little thicker and then add the cooked bacon and mushrooms when 01263 838383 golden. Make sure you have pulled out your chicken breast and checked that is cooked 01263 579579 through but still lovely and moist. 5. Reduce this into a rich creamy carbonara and then add your cooked gnocchi and season to your preference. 6. To serve, pour your gnocchi into a bowl or plate of your preference, I would recommend a deep lipped bowl, and then slice the cooked chicken breast in half and serve on top.

Cantamus Choir: Christmas in a Small Country Church

Cantamus was the inspiration of Margaret Hunter, a member of the congregation at St Margaret's church in Thorpe Market. Founded in 1998 by Ro Curtis, the choir fast established its reputation by successive music directors, as a choir with a wide repertoire who performed great choral works. Their annual event came to be loved by all, the 'Christmas Concert’ - its setting quite iconic in the picturesque church at Thorpe Market, lit only by candlelight, holly-entwined wooden staves at the end of each pew, beautifully chosen carols and mulled wine to lend further warmth.

Philip will be presenting a Christmas Concert this year with an innovative programme, quite different from the usual year-in, year-out repertoire of concerts prior to Christmas. Cantamus will sing carols from early plainsong through the English and European mediaeval period, to the early carols of 18th century America. All these carols being interspersed around a Pastoral, Christmas Mass setting based on ancient elements of Slovak folk music, and European baroque music, by the Moravian For the last five years, the choir composer and monk had been based in a number of Edmund Pascha. other venues. Thorpe Market church, a venue well known for

its support of the arts and with vastly improved facilities to stage performances and exhibitions.

Cantamus is now led by a new Director of Music, Philip Adams. An experienced former chorister and organist who held a number of significant directorships across the country. Whilst in Brighton he organised concerts for the Brighton Festival, and sang with the Brighton Chamber Choir. He also taught music for 25 years at Cumnor House School, in Sussex.

This will take place in the candle-lit church of St Margaret's, Thorpe Market, and to complete that typical 'country church at Christmas' ambience and for everyone's further enjoyment, there will be a glass of mulled wine during the interval. It would be hard to find a more iconic setting. Do come along and join us. The Christmas Concert is on Friday 9th December at 7pm. £8 Fee on entry of which

Pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham were delighted to hear that one of their year 6 pupils, Oliver Davison, is to have one of his poems published!

Oliver recently submitted his poem, ‘The Sun is a Hungry Lion’, an original summer inspired poem, to be considered for a Young Writers ‘Summertime Rhymes’ collection.

Oliver’s poem was chosen for publication in a book called Summertime Rhymes’ – Fun In The Sun.

Oliver’s poem was chosen because it showcased his individual expression of imagination, perception, use of language and creativity.

Millfield is extremely proud of his success and hope to see many more of his poems in print. He is a true inspiration!

What you need to know about planning a Lasting Power of Attorney

By Lin Whitehead, Partner and Head of Wills, Trusts and Probate Department at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors

If you lose mental capacity because of dementia, you will need someone else to manage your legal, financial and health affairs. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place can be just as important as having a Will. It gives you the reassurance of knowing your wishes will be respected if at any time in the future you become unable to make decisions for yourself. Before you have your LPA prepared there are some important factors for you to consider.

Who should I choose to act as my Attorney/s? You should choose a person or people with whom you have a settled and easy relationship. The person or people chosen must be absolutely trustworthy and possess appropriate skills to make decisions on your behalf. They must be over 18 and not be an undischarged or interim bankrupt person, if you are making a Property and Affairs Power. How many Attorneys should I appoint? You can appoint one Attorney but it is advisable to appoint more than one or a replacement, to lessen the chance of abuse and ensure continuity in case your chosen Attorney cannot act. If you choose more than one, it is essential that those people get on with each other.

& Collinge Solicitors and AgeUK Norfolk will be delivering a training session for businesses and individuals to help understand Dementia and the legal consequences. Taking place from 1.00 – 2.30pm at Sheringham Golf Club, this session is designed to be of value and relevant to business owners, private individuals and professional advisers. This session is free to attend and refreshments are available on arrival. To book your place or for more information, contact Andrea Smith on 01603 693575 or email ASmith@clapham-collinge.co.uk To find out more about Lasting Powers of Attorney or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Lasting Power of Attorney solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact us today on 01263

What if my circumstances change? You should consider appointing a replacement Attorney to provide for a situation that your chosen Attorney is not able or is unwilling to act. If you appoint your spouse or civil partner, be aware that dissolution of the marriage or civil partnership terminates the appointment of your spouse/civil partner, unless you have indicated otherwise.

How should my Attorneys act? If you have more than one Attorney, you will need to decide whether you want them to act: Jointly - always together - If they are appointed together, they must always sign together and agree which can be difficult in practice. Additionally if one dies, loses mental capacity or becomes bankrupt (if the Power is a Financial Power), the document can no longer be used. Together and independently – they can act either together or entirely independently of each other. This works well when the Attorneys do not live near to each other or, if one were to retire or die, then the other Attorney could still act. A combination - you decide which decisions they have to make together and which independently.

How do the Attorneys know what to do? They must always act in your best interests as set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and follow the guidance contained in the Code of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers had an early morning call into action at the end of last month when the pagers sounded at 7.21am to reports of a yacht aground just off the station at Cart Gap. Joan Mary, the Station’s Atlantic lifeboat, was launched with Tim Grimmer at the helm and Cubitt Siely Jnr and Tony Phenix as crew.

They proceeded to the yacht. The sea was flat with poor visibility. The lifeboat was soon alongside the vessel, the lone sailor had been thrown ashore by the impact with the groynes. Other crew from the Station made their way along the beach and gave first aid to the sailor, who had cuts and bruises, before he was checked over by an Ambulance crew. The lifeboat crew were soon joined by the Coastguards from Mundesley and Happisburgh. Happisburgh lifeboat stayed on scene until 9.30am when they were stood down by the Coastguard, They then returned to Station and made ready for service again. The yacht was en route from Hull to the Thames Estuary when he lost wind and his engine failed to start and he ran into the groynes. The yachtsman regrets not calling for help until it was too late.

The RNLI would advise all yachtsmen to always inform the Coastguard of their route and time they intended to arrive at their destination, have a working radio and know how to use it and always wear a lifejacket when on deck or in rough weather.

22

The Coastguard remained with the Yacht and was joined by the Fire Service to remove diesel from the yacht as it was still aground (as at about 5pm) and holed with a rising tide.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We now have cats in all four of the new pens and both our fosterers are delighted to once again be helping needy cats. Although several cats and kittens have recently left for new homes, including Beth, one of our long term residents, their places have already been taken by cats from our waiting list. In a recent article I mentioned Cats Protection’s concern with regard to the problem of kittens being bred and sold in poor welfare conditions by individuals more motivated by money than their welfare. They are now asking for the help of like minded people to change the law to protect kittens sold that are underweight, under eight weeks old, in poor condition and flea and worm infested. The adverts are often misleading, some giving the impression that they are purchasing a pedigree cat, although there is no documentary evidence of this; some even claim the kitten is, for instance, a Ragdoll/British Shorthair cross (or other combination of breeds), when it is apparent from the photos that it is just an ordinary little moggy. Others will charge more for a certain colour, while the most important factor should be the kitten(s) temperament and sociability. It has also been noted that when a person is regularly advertising kittens on these websites, then it is not an instance where there was no intention for the cat to have kittens, but they are being deliberately bred to sell. Because Cats Protection sees so many abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens, we all believe it is important that legislation is in place to safeguard vulnerable animals. For cat lovers with computers you can

Reminders for the Festive Season

We’ve continued to see a wide and fascinating variety of cases over the last month, including a trip to Amazona Zoo to ultrasound a Spider Monkey and check on a pregnant Tapir (due imminently!).

We have also been getting plenty of use from our other diagnostic equipment including our video endoscopes. These are wonderful pieces of kit that enable us to pass tiny cameras into airways (bronchoscopes) and the intestinal tract (gastroscopes). One of the most rewarding procedures is the retrieval of foreign bodies that may otherwise go on to be very problematic to our patients.

read more about this at www.cats.org.uk/ truecostofkittens. Approaches will be made to the Minister responsible for animal welfare to (1) end sales of kittens under eight weeks old (2) regulate repeat breeding for sale from the family cat (3) define commercial pet sales to protect the welfare of kittens bred for sale. If you would like to support this action, please contact us via the Cats Protection website or at Skye, lovely friendly our Christmas Sale, where we will be able to go into girl about 5 years old more detail. We do feel strongly about this as there are so many cats and kittens out there needing homes, some of which have been abandoned because they are surplus to requirements, so deliberately breeding and selling kittens, just add to our workload. A recent instance of this was the little kitten, which had obviously originated from a home, which was found abandoned on the road. The person who found it initially thought it had been in an accident and was going to place it on the verge. When he discovered it was alive and not injured, he took it to one of the vets we use, where it was placed in intensive care. Thankfully, it has now recovered. If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. You can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

One such case was Chloe, an eight year old domestic long haired cat who had suddenly started violently sneezing and retching. Bronchoscopic examination under general anaesthetic revealed that she had vomited an enormous blade of grass into her nasal cavity, which had become lodged between her throat and her nose. Retrieving long, but delicate foreign bodies is not the easiest of tasks but, on this occasion, produced one of the most impressive I have seen in a long time! With Christmas just around the corner, I thought I would also use this opportunity to make a few timely reminders. Festive season means chocolate in abundance, which is toxic to dogs, as are raisins, sultanas and even currants (as one well informed client recently reminded me), so please be careful they don’t get access to these things.

For our feline companions out there, watch the tinsel and other decorations that may be played with and potentially swallowed, avoid having lilies in the house, which can cause kidney failure in cats, and keep the paracetamol locked away for our colds and hangovers only as it is highly toxic to cats! Dear Margaret,

Having completed this year’s Wings Appeal returns, I am pleased to announce that, thanks to the sterling work of my small band of helpers, and the support of several local businesses, the North Walsham Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association has this year raised the magnificent sum of £2616.30. On behalf of the Branch I would like to say a big thank you to all concerned, you know who you are. I am also pleased to announce that the Branch has its 70th birthday on 10 December and to celebrate this, we have a luncheon at the Bluebell Inn on Tuesday 29 November. Would anyone interested in attending this rather informal affair please contact me on 01692 405367 before Tuesday 22 November. Again thank you to my army of helpers and those who have supported the Branch both this year and in the past.

Bob Barker, Vice-Chairman, Wings appeal Organiser, Treasurer North Walsham Branch Royal Air Forces Association

The Flour Mill

A mist hangs over the river, All is calm and still, A swan glides past me As I walk to the mill. We are short of flour To bake our daily bread, And it's always a joy To chat to miller, Fred.

The mill is in a pretty spot, Cocooned by many trees, Fred keeps several hives For his beloved bees. It will soon be Christmas, I hope that it stays fine, When the villagers go to the mill, For carols, mince pies and wine. Diane Berthelot

With over 50% of staff having remained with the company for three years or more, both New Boundaries Group and Platinum 1 are keen to expand their dedicated teams across the group of care homes in order to continue ensuring the highest levels of care.

Day, night and flexible shifts are available and training is provided in-house to enable staff to keep up to date and in line with CQC requirements.

Recruitment Event For those interested in a job in care either with permanent hours or agency work, a recruitment event is taking place on Thursday 1st December between 10 am and 1 pm at the head office of both New Boundaries Group and Platinum 1 Recruitment at Unit 2 Cornish Way, Lyngate Industrial Estate, North Walsham NR28 0AW.

“We look forward to seeing as many people as possible who are thinking about a job in care, or who are looking to move on, to join us for a cup of tea and a slice of cake,” said Dee Mauree.

North Walsham Table Tennis Doubles thriller sees NWSCB beat backhanders

In the Premier Division, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott and the Richard’s Westgate and Porritt hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Elliott winning the opener against Wilson in four before Westgate edged out De Neve 12-10 in the fifth. After beating Porritt in straight, two wins in four saw Warner take a maximum for the visitors. Wilson won a dogged battle against Porritt from two down 9-11, 10-12, 14-12, 11-5, 11-4 but lost in four to Westgate. De Neve took a set from Porritt before being beaten in straight by a very calm Elliott in the final singles which gave the hosts a chance to claim the match in a crucial doubles. Elliott and Westgate took the first two sets 11-2, 13-11 but Wilson and De Neve levelled 11-7, 11-8, however the hosts won the decider 11-7 to win the match 6-4 for NWSCB and the team also beat Sharks by the same score,. NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Howard Lupton and Tom Baldock-Yaxley hosted Shark’s Simon Halliday (playing up) and Steve and Matt Hudson. NWSCA won 10-0 but there was five-

set agony for Halliday who lost a two set lead against Baldock-Yaxley before being beaten 11-3, 5-11, 14-12, 12-14, 11-4 by Lupton. Elliott played up for NWSCA and took a maximum as they won 7-3 away to Mundesley A. NWSCD’s Stuart Hook, Phil Mole and Andrew Tuddenham hosted Aylsham Hathor’s Peter Ward, Dave Johns and Ian Potter. Ward took a maximum recovering from two down against Mole and being played around the table in another fivesetter with Hook. Potter took a single in straight against Tuddenham who in turn beat Johns in five. Mole and Hook both took braces for the hosts including a key recovery from two down by Hook against Potter, but Ward and Potter won the doubles in four against Hook and Tuddenham to draw the match. NWSCC’s Joel Lodge, Carrie Last and Eric Dolden hosted Aylsham Enterprise in the First Division. For the visitors the experienced and steady play of Ray Gale combined with the great ball placement and speed and spin of

After winning at lowly Fullerians, the Vikings' promotion hopes took a dent losing at home to Brentwood 18-3 on 5 November.

They retained fourth place in London One North but are now just two points ahead of fifth placed Thurrock and five behind Brentwood; Tring remain top, twelve points ahead of the Vikings with Chingford second. The Brentwood match had a dreadful start when Vikings' skipper Ryan Oakes (pictured) suffered a serious leg injury in the first minute. This inevitably disrupted the Vikings but they still dominated the first half territorially only though being 3-0 ahead at the break. The second half was very different with Brentwood driving forward relentlessly and creating scoring opportunities.

The Raiders have won their last three games and moved up to third in

Calling all Norfolk Artists!

Be part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2017 Applications are now open to take part in one of the most successful Open Studios schemes in the country. Hundreds of artists across the region take part in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios each year, inviting the public into their private studios to reveal where and how they work.

The event attracts thousands of visitors and this year an estimated 28,000 people visited studios across the county. Artists have the opportunity to promote their work and meet their audience, and visitors see artwork as it happens.

This year 455 artists participated in the scheme across 255 venues - along with 16 Norfolk schools and artists came together to create 19 Art Trails in various areas across Norfolk, allowing the visitor to enjoy a number of studios all in one day. Art demonstrations, private views, workshops and talks also make up this well-loved event.

Well established artists, as well as artists showing their work for the first time, take part and for many it is not just about making artwork sales. Artists comment that it helps them to feel part of their local artist community, they value visitor feedback and the scheme helps raise the profile of Norfolk artists.

Breckland based artist Emma Wells, who took part in the scheme for the first time this year, said she was “very pleased to have taken part in this event, it has been a great launch pad for my new business”.

Norwich based company Wex Photographic will be supporting the scheme again in 2017. Events Manager Emma van Deventer said “We are delighted to be sponsoring Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios once more this year, reflecting our long-term commitment to supporting local arts programmes.

“The ethos of Open Studios is very much in line with our own values as a photographic company and we look forward to helping celebrate and promote artistic talent in Norfolk.”

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2017 will take place between 27 May and 11 June 2017.

Artists wanting to take part can apply online at nnopenstudios.org.uk. The cost for inclusion in the scheme is £100 for individual artists and £280 for groups of artists, and includes a listing in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios

North Walsham Times 507 November 19th 2016

brochure with a print run of 35,000.

Artists will also receive a listing on the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios website, as well as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to take part in the high profile Central Taster Exhibition at The Forum in Norwich in April 2017, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at the venue. The deadline for 2017 applications is Friday 9 December 2016.
