Christmas Lights

This year’s Christmas lights were switched on in the town at the end of last month.

The lights were turned on by Her Britannic Majesty's former ambassador to Colombia, Sir Thomas Duggin and his wife, Lady Jeanette, who were accompanied by Barry Hestor, the town’s Mayor and Roger Hopkinson, the Town Crier.

Sir Thomas, who served as ambassador between 2001 and 2004, and his wife have lived in North Walsham for six years. Lady Duggin runs a business, My Specialities Ltd, making 'Lady Jay's preserves'. They were joined by hundreds of people in the market place for the laser led countdown, which saw the market cross illuminated with icicles and jets of snow.

The day began with the volunteers meeting at 8am to get everything set up in time for the entertainment to start at 3pm.

Christmas Lights

Continued from front cover... The afternoon's entertainment included singer guitarist Helen Bloomfield, Two's Company, Manor Road school choir and The Invidia choir, with Dick Hutchinson from North Norfolk radio acting as the compere throughout the afternoon until the switch on, which was then followed by carol singing, accompanied by the town’s Salvation Army Band.

Father Christmas was also in attendance and rode through the town on his sleigh provided by the town’s Round Table. New lights this year included features made by students at Yarmouth College, including a tree on top of St Nicholas Church. There was also a Christmas tree on 4a Market Street, which was kindly donated to The Lights Committee by North Walsham Garden Centre.

This year’s window competition saw more businesses entering and after judging took place, Good Reflections in the Market Mews were announced as this year’s winner.

Lights Chairman Colin Jeary added 'Due to the fact we had more lights this year, it meant that the volunteers, normally around ten, started erecting the lights in mid October to make sure that the lights were ready for the switch on.'

He added 'The Lights are funded entirely by donations from businesses in the town and on the industrial estate, and from the street fair. The Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who donated especially NNDC for free parking and barriers, NWTC, North Walsham Garden Centre, Trevor Charles Van Hire, The Music Hut, North Norfolk Radio, The White Swan & Café Kitale.

As Chairman, I would like to thank all the committee and volunteers, many of whom have been involved for over 10 years, for their support over the past year, which have seen us move storage locations as well as erecting this year’s lights. All of us are volunteers and do what we do for the people of the town and visitors, so we hope our work is appreciated. The committee are now taking a few well-earned Sunday's off before we start dismantling once again on Sunday 8 January to store them for 2017. Colin Jeary, Chairman, North Walsham Christmas Lights

ANOTHER FANTASTIC YEAR

Once again, the generosity of the residents of North Walsham and the surrounding area has enabled the Poppy Appeal to achieve a remarkable total. To date we have raised over ÂŁ16.250.

As well as praising the local residents’ and visitors’ generosity, I must express my gratitude to all the shops and businesses who hosted our collection tins, the local schools who raised an incredible amount this year and a great team of helpers who, together with staff from Sainsbury and Waitrose, manned collection points in both stores for two weeks.

We have already passed the total raised in the year to 1 September 2016 and this helps ensure the Royal British Legion can continue to serve present and former members of our armed services whenever the need arises. David Audley, North Walsham Poppy Appeal Organiser

Do something amazing this year and support an older person in Norfolk

For some people, growing older can bring about social isolation, anxiety, frailty and loss of independence.

Age UK Norfolk is the first and most trusted port of call for so many older people and their families. Volunteers are the lifeblood and backbone of the local charity, which is calling for new volunteers to help them continue supporting older people in Norfolk, just like Roger Parsons.

Roger retired to Sheringham after a long and varied career in the ministry. He was ordained in 1969 and led two London parishes, in Clerkenwell and Hoxton. Today, Roger lives in a care home in North Walsham and finds that he now needs some support from others. Roger has regular visits from Brenda Barnes, an Age UK Norfolk Advocacy volunteer. Brenda helps to keep his finances and paper work in check – including tracking down his will.

Brenda said, “From my work in banking, I was used to dealing with money and filling in forms and I thought, ‘I could do this for other people’, so I decided to become a volunteer.

Last year, the Age UK Norfolk Advocacy service carried out 3,487 home visits and helped people to deal with a combined total of ÂŁ27,440, of personal debt, which for some older people could mean the difference between heating and eating.

Mundesley Brownies Gain Their Badges

Animal Magic Dog Club were delighted to host visits from Mundesley Brownies in order that they could gain their Friends to Animals badge. The Brownies attended sessions hosted by Animal Magic trainers where they learnt how to look after a dog, from grooming, feeding and exercise to when to go to the vets. They learnt about the importance of training dogs and enjoyed putting their new found skills into practice around an agility course. They were also taught about the needs of puppies, which was particularly appropriate for one lucky Brownie, who’s fortunate enough to be collecting her very own puppy in December.

Group leader Debbie Wright said “the Brownies all thoroughly enjoyed their visits to Animal Magic, we are very grateful that they generously donate their time to us”

Mundesley Brownies were awarded their Friends to Animals badge on 17 November.

For more information please visit the Girlguiding website at www.girlguiding.org.uk or call Debbie Wright on 01263 720540.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and will return in the New Year for another term of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. Kernowland to Millfield

The pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, enjoyed a thrilling visit from Jack Trelawney the author of ‘Kernowland’ and ‘Thirteen Series’ books. Mr Trelawney captivated the children with a slide show about his stories and presented his website, which showed how to create Surround your day with elegance and their own ‘animal’ romance on your special day. mutant characters.

J’s WEDDING CARS

The children were so fascinated by the creative and imaginative stories, which Mr Trewlawney read out to them, that they were more than happy to sit and listen through break time!

After the presentation Mr Trewlaney dedicated and signed copies of his books to some of the children, some of whom brought the whole series!

Many of our small furries are kept outside all year round. Luckily these little pets have amazing digestive systems that contain the ability for fermentation and heat production. However in order to do so it's important to ensure that they have access to water and good food 24hrs a day. Here are some helpful tips to keep your furry little ones warm this winter. 1. If possible move the hutch into the garage or shed. If not, increase the insulation around the hutch by raising the hutch from the ground, covering with a thick blanket and tarpaulin to protect it from the elements.

2. Ensure that the hutch has plenty of soft dry bedding such as straw and hay that your pet can get cosy in. 3. Check that your pets water bottle doesn't freeze.

4. Provide food and water to last throughout the night.

5. Give your small furry a microwaveable heat pad to last the night, these are safer than electric heat pads.

Short afternoon rehearsal is planned. Sat 24 Dec 11.30pm a celebratory Midnight Mass. All of these events take place in the warm, candlelit atmosphere of one of our small village churches. All welcome to join us at this special time of the year

Candle of Hope

I'm just a little candle But I can shed a nice bright light, Over the Christmas tree and presents On this very special night. It is time to say 'thank you' For all the good things we have had, And the help that has been given Through the good times and the bad. What are the risks of DIY Wills?

A recent report from the Solicitors for the Elderly has focused on the risks of Kerri-Anne DIY Lasting Watson Powers of Attorneys and Wills. With the ever growing power of the internet and the constant desire to make financial savings, the amount of DIY legal forms on offer has never been greater, so what are the risks and is the potential short-term financial benefit worth not seeking professional advice?

Why is my Will important? Having a Will ensures that all of the savings and assets that make up your estate are distributed in the manner that you intend after your death. Making sure that your friends and family are provided for in whatever way you see fit. If you die before making a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which can be unjust and unfair.

What are the risks of a DIY Will? Many DIY Will making facilities are now offered online and by several companies allowing you to do it yourself. You can buy 'Will making kits' from high street shops or fill out online forms. The seeming benefit of this DIY method is primarily the cost. • Mistakes in drafting your Will Inaccuracies in drafting can lead to partial intestacy i.e only some of your estate goes where you want and the rest is distributed under the intestacy rules. For example: "I leave £10,000 to my daughter" but your estate is worth £50,000 and you haven't specified where the rest should go then the £50,000 would fall under intestacy rules to dictate who receives the remainder. • Not witnessed correctly If a Will is not witnessed correctly then it can be rendered invalid, often with the error being irreparable, as the mistake is only discovered post death. • Potential risk of being contested A DIY Will may be more susceptible to potentially being contested on grounds that at the time of making the Will you did not have the capacity to do so. A solicitor can get a doctor to provide a capacity assessment to prevent this and ensure the correct legal test of capacity is applied. The DIY drafting may well be somewhat ambiguous and thus leave the Will open to being contested by jealous family members or the like. • Complex family situations

With the increase of blended families and second marriages the 'simple' Will concept is becoming less common and the complexity of a Will may well depend on the make-up of your family. For example, if you cohabitate but are not married then you will not automatically have rights to a partners estate if the Will fails to stipulate what should pass to the survivor. If you get married after making a Will then the Will can be automatically revoked unless it expressly states otherwise. • Changes in circumstances Sometimes, you might not consider a change in your circumstances requires your Will to be updated, but lawyers will know. Take for example a scenario where you own an old piano which you would like your nephew to inherit the piano upon your death. You draft the Will yourself and gift the piano to him. A few years later you purchase a newer, much more expensive piano and sell the previous one you owned when you drafted the will, you don't think this is a problem

Merry Christmas everyone!

Christmas Poem

In a troubled world Of uncertainties, riots Wars and unrest We need a Christmas That ranks high Amongst the best. So with your family and friends Create those memories That we all hold so dear And above all, have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS And a HAPPY NEW YEAR Derek Philpott

as you refer to a piano in your will. Right? Wrong! Upon your death if you have not changed the Will your nephew may not receive the newer piano as that was not the piano you owned when you drafted the original will. The newer piano could fall under intestacy rules and go to someone who you never intended it to. For most people the purpose of drafting a Will is to give peace of mind and reassurance that your wishes will be respected in the future and to relieve the stress for family and friends during emotional times. The danger with a DIY Will is that you risk not doing either, leaving them instead with a costly legal minefield.

North Walsham Historical Society

The Living History of Blickling Hall by R and E Scott

The December talk was in two parts. Part 1 The presentation was in the form of a short play based on two characters from Blickling’s past. Cath the Kitchen Maid and Lord Lothian. Both in costume of the 1930s.

Suddenly Cath (Liz Scott) burst onto the scene, she was very talkative in her broad Norfolk accent, and amusingly rambled between her origins, duties in the hall and various people with whom she came into contact.

She lived at Alderford, one of four sisters, all of whom slept together in the same bed. At Blickling Hall, her duties necessitated rising at 0600 to prepare the kitchen for the Cook. When Lady Astor visited the utensils had to be laid out in a special sequence. Lady Astor, an American, liked Marmalade and other exotic preserves, the sugar for which came from Fortnum and Masons and was collected from Aylsham Station by the Under Gardner, “Everybody should have an Under Gardner!”

Lord Lothian was a diplomat, when living at Blickling, he just liked to eat simple foods. For special four course dinners he liked to have Consume soup, (a word she had difficulty in pronouncing) which necessitated soaking and boiling beef stock for two days to reduce it to a clear liquid before serving. This resulted in his Lordship and guests having brown water, while the kitchen staff dined on meat and vegetables, ha! Lady Astor insisted in having her menus written in French and particularly likes Souflas (again a difficult word) and sausage rolls, also Hors d’oeuvres (just as difficult).

For her weeks work she received 5/- plus one half day off (which she often didn’t get). She tried to encourage the ladies in the audience to join her on a Saturday evening at a dance at Aylsham, if they wished to meet a nice young man! One Saturday night she gained a criminal record by riding her bicycle without lights, for which she was fined 10/.

Suddenly Lord Lothian (Bob Scott) appeared in the doorway, saying that he believed he was in Blickling; not somewhere else. At this. Cath asked him if he was satisfied with her services, to which he replied “He was”, this prompted her to suggest that she be promoted, to which he replied “No”!

Part 2 At this point both character suddenly shed their play acting personas and revealed who they really are. Cath took off her maids cap and apron and spoke without her strong accent to explain that she is a Magistrate also a volunteer guide in the Hall specialising in the kitchen. She also has a GCE ‘A’ level in French. Lord Lothian explained that he is a Restoration Engineer, restoring old estate machinery to an as new condition for displaying in and around the Hall. Some of which were shown on the screen, a cupboard that hides a modern electric cooker, the Ruston and Hornsby oil engine and its associated water pump, plus the turn style gate that gives pedestrian access to the park. Liz then asked us how much of the past half an hour was true - all of it, only half, or none of it. She then said that all of it was true, with the one exception of the fine Cath received for riding her bike without lights. She explained that it was not Cath but Flo Widlow the former cook. From there on, all of the information has come

from Post Cards, which have been turned into slides. Many areas shown have been completely neglected over the years or had been changed. They are now being brought back into use.

Because the house is built on the footprint of the earlier Jacobean House, the perspective is incorrect, the side we see from the drive embracing the main entrance is in fact the side, the side seen from the garden is much linger and fits the front better. Also the servant’s quarters and the service areas are the two wings extending on each side of the drive, should have been placed at the back of the Hall. The walled garden is being restored under the guidance of its specialist gardener Mike Owers. Once it employed 17 gardeners, when peaches cost 2/6 d. Also some of the extensive green houses have been restored.

Several pictures showing how the gardens once looked, this included Lady Constance who ideas were very progressive, many of her ideas are still in evidence today, especial in the Parterre garden that leads on to the temple. Young people are very much encouraged to participate in the activities.

A photograph showing Cath on her wedding day when she became Mrs Cathleen Grover nee Watts, The real Cath, is still with us at the age of 94, her character is very much as seen displayed this evening.

The Mausoleum located in the Great Wood, is the final resting place of Sir John Hobart 2nd Earl of Buckingham and both of his wives. Finally, the brick kilns still exist in the woods, they produced most of the bricks used for building the estate houses. Mike Sothcott

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Four Decades of Lifeboat Service comes to an End

At midnight on 22 November, Happisburgh RNLI Station saw the end of an era when Cubitt Siely retired from the crew after 38 year service, which is the maximum time any crew member can spend on the crew of an inshore lifeboat.

In this time there has been 251 service launches saving 40 lives at Happisburgh. Cubitt almost stood down twice before, when he was 45 and 50 when each time the retirement age had been put up but this has not happened this time so after all these years he is retiring from the crew but not the station.

Cubitt joined the crew at the start of the season in 1979, this was when Happisburgh Lifeboat only operated from Easter to October each year and only in daylight. One of his first callouts was to an inflatable boat drifting off the coast at Walcott; on arrival on scene the crew spotted the inflatable, ½ mile off the beach. When they got alongside they found a seven year-old little girl crying in the bottom of the boat. This brought home to Cubitt why he had joined the crew and became part of the RNLI family.

In the late 80s he was passed out as a Helmsman by the Divisional Inspector. Cubitt has always taken a full part in the

crew, working hard to improve on his own skills and help others do the same; in 1994 he was appointed to Senior Helmsman. There have been many changes over the years - the D Class Lifeboat operating all year round and 24hrs a day with improvement in equipment.

Another callout that sticks in his mind was to a Dive Boat 2.5 miles off the coast, which had lost nine divers. Happisburgh Lifeboat was called, along with Cromer and Sheringham Lifeboats, Happisburgh Lifeboat being first on scene with Cubitt at the helm and they soon found seven of the divers and picked them up. He recalled how tight it was to get all seven divers and equipment onto the D Class Lifeboat. Cubitt coordinated the other lifeboats and helicopter and the other two divers were soon found and picked up by Sheringham Lifeboat before being taken to Sea Palling. He remembers the great feeling of successful team work.

2009 brought the arrival of the Atlantic 75 on a two year trial, which in 2010 was made permanent. This meant more new skills to learn and the thrill of working as part of a team with the best equipment helped the station achieve their goal by pulling together. Cubitt remembers a call out on the Atlantic, with two other helmsmen as his crew, launching into a north-easterly force seven wind to the aid of a wind surfer - the launch was textbook with the boat and crew performing as one even though they were stood down by the Coastguard as the wind surfers had made it ashore safely. Cubitt has never been far from the sea or Lifeboat - even on

Cubitt bringing Joan Mary safely back ashore for the last time

holidays he has spent time visiting other Stations around the country. He would start by speaking to the souvenir seller and after a few calls the crew would be there to show him round and chat about the way they work. He has always been impressed by the way in which the RNLI “family” support each other.

Cubitt will be missed from the crew. The Siely name will still be on the crew list with his daughter Charlotte, who has just passed out as Helm of the Atlantic Lifeboat, living up to her father’s high standards. She was joined by her brother on 16th November 2011, as soon as he turned seventeen; Cubitt junior is now working towards becoming a helm of the D Class lifeboat.

Cubitt had his last Sunday training exercise on 20 November, when he took the helm of Joan Mary with Charlotte Siely and Martin Gibbs as crew. They were to be joined by a Coastguard search and rescue helicopter but due to operational commitments were unable to join Cubitt. Cromer Lifeboat did come to Happisburgh to carry out an exercise before giving Cubitt the chance to take command of their Tamar lifeboat.

On returning to the beach Cubitt was sad to have arrived at retirement, “I will miss the team work, it’s not only on callouts that it makes a difference but also on exercises; not being part of the crew will be sad but I will remain on the station as part of the operation team”.

Tim Grimmer senior helm said “this is a fantastic commitment to life saving on the North Norfolk coast. Cubitt will be missed on the crew but we are glad he is staying part of the team at Happisburgh”.

To celebrate his retirement the Crew surprised Cubitt with a presentation party following his last training night on the crew.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER MUM, DO I HAVE TO EAT BRUSSELS SPROUTS?

This is said to be the most popular whine at Christmas but why were Brussels sprouts voted the most hated vegetable in Britain? There are, in fact, many reasons why we should all eat more sprouts and they are also a very interesting vegetable, for example

• Sprouts contain high levels of vitamins A and C, folic acid and dietary fibre, and can help protect against colon and stomach fibre. • An 80g serving of sprouts contains more vitamin C than an orange, and a cup of cooked Brussels sprouts contains only about 60 calories. • The area covered by Brussels sprouts fields in the UK is the equivalent of 3, 420 football pitches. • A team of scientist s and schoolchildren used the energy from 1000 sprouts to light a Christmas tree in London. • In 2010, a new vegetable was created called

• • •

the Flowersprout, a hybrid with kale that contained double the amount of vitamin B6 and vitamin C of an ordinary sprout. A man once pushed a sprout to the top of Mt. Snowdon using only his nose. A man from Sweden swallowed 31 sprouts in one minute. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reportedly ate Brussels sprouts on their honeymoon in the Seychelles – the vegetable is supposed to be an aid to fertility. Supplies are threatened this year due to the invasion of the diamond-back or cabbage moth. Bernard Lavery of Wales grew a monster sprout that weighed in at 8.19 kg.

The freshest sprouts are green with a white base. If they are slightly yellow or brown it means they are getting old. Overcooking sprouts makes them smell like rotten eggs due to the high levels of sulforaphane they contain. Sprouts are not the easiest vegetable to grow ourselves but if you fancy a go sow the seeds in April, in a small pot and germinate under cover or outside in an open cold frame. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into modules or into a Knitters all over North Walsham have been busy making Christmas tray of multi-purpose Angels and bringing them to St Nicholas Church in North Walsham.

Christmas Angels

Each Angel carries a Christmas message. On 18 December they will be blessed and then distributed all over the area.

compost 7-8cm deep. Do not touch the stems, pick up the plants by their leaves only. Grow the young sprouts on until they are 10-12cm tall.

Prepare the previously manured land by forking it over and then tread firmly on the soil before planting the seedlings. Make holes with a dibber or trowel, 80-90cm apart, and set out your plants so that the seed leaves are level with the soil. Water thoroughly and let the water drain away. Press the soil back around the roots very firmly.

Keep the sprouts well hoed and protected from all the usual brassica pests. If you have pigeons in your garden or allotment, netting is essential.

As it is Christmas do you know...

‘What is green and goes camping?’ – A Brussels scout

‘Which vegetable is the strongest?’ – A muscle sprout

‘Why was the Brussels sprout sent to prison?’ – Because it was a repeat offender

Finally, If you are bored over the holiday there is a paper and pencil game called ‘Sprouts’ which looks interesting, see Wikipedia for the rules. Bob Wilkinson

These little angels are a gift from ‘Churches Together’. They have been knitted and labelled with love. It is hoped that they will be found and taken home and kept as a reminder that we live in a kind, caring community.

Christmas can be difficult for so many, missing loved ones, feeling lonely, or that Christmas just has too many expectations today that we cannot meet.

If you find one of our angels, please look after it, keep it warm and dry and hopefully the message you find will mean something very special to you.

What a hoot!

Worstead Preschool recently enjoyed a visit from Happisburgh Owls.

‘We had a fantastic time getting up close to these beautiful birds. The children all got the chance to touch and hold the owls. We learnt so much about them and even got the chance to dissect an owl pellet. We have been reading the book Owl Babies written by Martin Waddell, so having this visit brought the book to life.

and all the children thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you to Sandra and her team for letting us meet her wonderful owls - we had a very owlie time!’

One of the children said "I liked them coming, will they be here tomorrow?".

AIR CADETS REMEMBER

Cadets from 2110 (North Walsham) Squadron Air Training Corps took part in the Remembrance Commemorations last month.

After selling poppies in Sainsbury’s on the Saturday, they attended the Remembrance Day service on the Sunday at St Edward’s Church, Badersfield, site of the World War Two RAF Coltishall. They marched to the church behind pipes and drum leading the veterans, with Cadet Corporal Elisha Drake carrying the Squadron banner, her first time performing this duty.

Olivia’s Letter from the Queen

North Norfolk Used Cars We are a new to North Walsham family business offering good value vehicles for all budgets.

Way back in May, the children at Kingfisher Kids Club were celebrating the Queen’s 90th Birthday.

They made crowns, baked and decorated cakes, dressed up, coloured pictures and made cards using various gems and craft resources. This was followed by a party for the children and party games. One of the children Olivia Bush, said to a member of staff “I wish I could really send my card to the Queen” as she drafted her own personal message to the Queen inside. As this was such an honourable request a member of our staff team sent the card to the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Having both forgotten about the card, the staff and children were very surprised when they received a letter with the Royal Crest on the envelope. It was from Buckingham Palace addressed to Olivia Bush, it was from the Queen Elizabeth with a thank you message “I send you my grateful thanks for the kind words you have sent to me on the occasion of my ninetieth birthday – Elizabeth R 2016”.

To the side of the card it said “The Queen hopes you will understand that, because of the enormous numbers of letters, cards and messages she has received in the last few months, it has not been possible to reply until now”.

Sue Shepheard –Club Supervisor said “We are very proud of the children at Kingfisher and were all very excited when Olivia opened the envelope, it was like Christmas coming early”.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Helps The Spirit of Coltishall Association

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers came to the aid of The Spirit of Coltishall Association, not at sea, but with technical aid. Happisburgh Lifeboat Station was donated a laptop computer by some American friends of Bronson Fargo, the previous Chairman who sadly died suddenly. As we all know, computers are advancing all the time & the Station’s computer needed updating. Happisburgh Station were aware that The Spirit of Coltishall Association were in need of a computer to help run their Jaguar flight simulator video link. This was a great way to help other volunteers and keep Bronson’s memory alive. On 12 November members of Happisburgh Crew went to the museum at Neatishead and had a very informative tour around and experienced the Jaguar flight simulator for themselves, before handing the computer over to the Association. The Spirit of Coltishall Association was formed to foster the memory of RAF Coltishall and to maintain the station’s renowned spirit through providing members with social and other occasions to celebrate their comradeship through their connection with the station. The Association will also play a role in the preservation of the history and memory of RAF Coltishall. Happisburgh RNLI, like many other lifeboat stations in the area, have a close connection to RAF Coltishall as the SAR helicopters were based at the station, which worked with all the local RNLI stations. Happisburgh RNLI were pleased to come to the aid of The Spirit of Coltishall Association volunteers. 15

Creativity, originality and invention were the three principles behind a Latin project set for the Year 6 pupils studying Latin at Millfield Primary School this term. Mrs Price, who teaches the group of eleven, wanted to bring out the pupils’ creative side and produce a Roman game of their own design. The children are part of the ‘Classics for All’ programme and are using Barbara Bell’s Minimus books. Some of the children took inspiration from this and they each created imaginative games which included: Roman ‘Cluedo’ using the characters from the book, ‘Old Medusa’ card game, revamped Latin Game of Life, two children created their own version of games similar to Trivial Pursuit complete with

homemade models, Latin Snap, Roman Snakes and Swords and a quiz board game complete with a spinning dial and counters to name but a few. Mrs Price organised an afternoon inviting the children from the Year 5 Latin group to play and experience the games. Each child was awarded a certificate for their hard work and creativity with three children receiving an Outstanding Achievement certificate. Todd Mitchell and Anya Quinn both received the awards for ‘Outstanding Design and Originality’ and Tilly Mason-Loan received the award for ‘Outstanding Design and Creativity.’ Mrs Price said, “I am so proud of the group, all of their ideas were absolutely amazing and so creative. It’s great to see how much they love the subject and I am looking forward to next terms masterpieces!”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Hopefully, by the time you read this you will be looking forward to spending Christmas with families, friends (and pets if you have them) and wondering what 2017 will bring. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

As we look back over the year, we remember the challenges we have all faced and also the things we have achieved. Cats and kittens that have come into care have found lovely new homes and it is always a pleasure to learn how they have adapted to the changes in their lives. Nevertheless, we still have many waiting for that special person to come and claim them. In the meantime, we have had the pleasure of caring for them, watching the timid ones learn to trust people, the ones with health problems recover, and the kittens develop their individual characters. Although we miss them when they leave, we are happy to know that they can continue to thrive and grow in a home environment.

We have also been able to help many in our area by offering our special neutering vouchers for those people on low incomes and benefits and, during 2016, have already helped over 250 cats and kittens. When money is left to the branch we have to plan how it should be spent and we believe this is one way of making good use of any money we receive. While there is still money in this “kitty” we will continue to do so. We have also used money left to the branch to replace some of our pens, which makes life easier for our fosterers and gives the cats more space. One of our supporters recently overheard a remark that their charity, unlike Cats Protection, spent the money they received on their cats and not on administration.

Anaemia

Rest assured, any money that we receive is spent entirely on the cats. We are all volunteers, and n one of us claim any expenses for the work that we undertake on behalf of the charity. The bulk of the money we raise is spent on veterinary costs, special food for cats that have health problems and cat litter. None is wasted.

Rachel, Ant and friends and family had a very busy time at the Christmas Lights event and raised £295 from their stall. We are also happy to advise everyone who supports Sharon’s stall at High Hedges on Lyngate Millie Mo, nice friendly Road, that during the year she has raised £465 to help girl, 7 years young care for the cats. When the weather is good, she has lots of interesting items on sale, including continually changing supply of books and pet carriers at very reasonable prices. We continue to look for new ways to raise money for the cats and do welcome fresh ideas and new volunteers for this.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Or visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Our case this month is Samson, a Clumber Spaniel, who is now 10 years and 4 months of age. Samson had been very fit and healthy for his first eight years of life until he presented to the surgery just over two years ago.

01692 501212 07817 179228

Kerstin Rogers

debonairdogs@btinternet.com

At the time he was lethargic, had a poor appetite and was running a temperature. As his condition had deteriorated he was admitted for further tests including ultrasound examination and blood tests. These tests demonstrated a rare and life threatening condition known as Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia. Effectively his own immune system was back firing and destroying his own red blood cells causing severe anaemia, which if not addressed is rapidly fatal. He was immediately started on treatment, which involves suppressing his immune system, but the effects of treatment are not guaranteed and many patients require further blood transfusions and some unfortunately do still not pull through. Fortunately Samson did respond to the treatment, but it took a very long time to return to normal and during that time he had to contend with the side effects of the medication and had some tough times. However, one year after diagnosis his medication was stopped- just in time for Christmas last year, and another year on he is still off medications and doing well ready for another Christmas which his owner didn't know whether he'd have.

It is cases like Samson's that make up for the tough times at the vets and I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all our caring clients and their wonderful animals and to all our staff here at Westover and the hard work they put in everyday. Happy Christmas! Toby Morrell MRCVS

North Walsham Table Tennis Cup Exit for NWSCB

The final second round match in the Knockout Singles Cup saw NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott and the Richard’s Westgate and Porritt host Shark’s Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson for a place in the quarter-finals with Patterson winning the opener in straight against Elliott. Westgate came back from trailing 2-5 to win the deciding fifth 11-7 against Matt Hudson before Steve Hudson beat Porritt in four after dropping the first 11-2. Patterson then beat Westgate 17-19, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5 to move Sharks 3-1 ahead but Elliott pulled one back for the hosts in four tough sets with no quarter given in long rallies with Steve Hudson. Matt Hudson moved Sharks one win away with a win in five against Porritt, but Westgate kept NWSCB’s hopes alive in four against Steve Hudson. Patterson sealed Shark’s 5-3 win in

three close sets against Porritt. NWSCB also hosted Outlaws in the Premier Division for whom Colin Humphries beat Porritt in five but lost a two set lead to Elliott and was also beaten by Westgate in four. Although a trio of encounters went to four the hosts could not handle the speed of Lee and the spin of Bennell as the visitors won 8-2. Also in the Division, Shark’s won 10-0 at home to NWSCD. Matt Hudson won the last six points from 5-9 as he beat Philip Stone in four while Steve Hudson beat Phil Mole 12-10, 10-12, 15-13, 11-5 and saved four set-points as he won the last six points from 6-10 to close out his win in straight against Stone.

In the First Division, NWSCC’s Mary Sawyer, Joel Lodge and Carrie Last hosted Crosscourts. The visitors moved 5-0 up with no sets dropped but then the hosts started to play better

as Last was edged out 14-12 in the fourth by Rod Goffin before Keith Beswick beat Lodge in four. Last then picked up a terrific win in five against John Welsh before Sawyer beat Goffin 12-10, 11-6, 11-7. Welsh and Goffin won the doubles 4-11, 12-14, 11-8, 11-6, 13-11 against Sawyer and Lodge to conclude Crosscourt’s 8-2 win. In the Second Division, NWSCF’s Frank Weston, John Chapman and Edna Stone won 10-0 away to LCC Seals with Rob Templeman picking up a set in each of his three singles and daughter Robyn also taking Weston to four. Finally NWSCA reached the semi-finals of the Knockout Doubles Cup following an 8-0 win against Aylsham Albion.

North Norfolk District Council ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ MEETING OF THE MINDS

There will be a meeting at Felmingham Village Hall for NNDCs Sports Clubs and Hubs project which will be coming to your area very soon. This will be an opportunity for you to give your ideas on the type of sporting activities that you would like to attend in Felmingham Village Hall.

This is a great opportunity for Felmingham and the surrounding villages to come together and create a Community Hub for the future. So come along and join us on 10 January 2017 at 10am for a chat.

For more information please contact Wyn 01263 516305 or email wyn.nurse@north-norfolk.gov.uk Free teas and coffees will be served. A home win over Letchworth followed by defeat at Thurrock saw the Vikings drop to sixth place - five points separate places four to six.

Against Letchworth they scored eight tries winning 54 -12, but it was much tighter versus Thurrock losing 25 -15. They showed great resilience to come back from 18-5 at half time, especially as they only had fourteen players for the final thirty minutes after a bemused Tom Coller was sent off.
