Issue no 512 February 11th 2017

Masons Boost to North Walsham Play Masonic Lodges across the Country have recently been urged to become more involved with their local communities, particularly in 2017, as this year is the 300th Anniversary of the formation of the United Grand Lodge of England. So, when Matthew Smith from North Walsham Play contacted the ‘Lodge of Unanimity No 102’ last February to see if any funding was available, it came at an ideal time. The Worshipful Master W.Bro Martin Howes agreed to adopt this project, for new playground equipment in the town, as his charity for the year. At the Lodge’s 2017 January meeting, held in the towns Community Centre, Matthew was invited as a guest at the dinner and was presented with a cheque for £3388.20.

Masons Boost to North Walsham Play Continued from front cover...

Accepting the cheque on behalf of North Walsham Play, Matthew Smith addressed all present and thanked them for their generosity and support in raising this very substantial donation. He added that “he strongly believed that all children in North Walsham should be able to have free access to the highest quality play parks within the county. Every child has the right to enjoy play and playing; regardless of skill and/or ability. The donation now allows for the first play park to be ordered and installed at Woodville Park, North Walsham (just off Hadfield Road). The new park will include play equipment accessible to all including the town’s first wheelchair accessible roundabout. This will be the first of many play parks that North Walsham Play hopes to raise funds for in the coming years. Lodge Charity Steward Ian Walker said “This is the biggest single donation we have ever made from our Lodge to a local project and we are impressed with the efforts of Matthew along with his committee and considered it very worthy of our support.

Public drop-in session success at Mundesley

Hundreds of people attended the Mundesley Coast Management Scheme public drop-in session and exhibition at at Coronation Hall in Mundesley on Tuesday 17 January from 2pm to 7.30pm.

An outline business case for Mundesley Coast Management Scheme is being developed to help attract funding and gain approval for the work. It is expected that the final scheme will cost between ÂŁ1 million and ÂŁ1.5 million pounds.

The public drop-in session helped to explain what options have been shortlisted for further consideration for the scheme and what the next steps will be. The event explained the need for the scheme, what is and isn’t possible; helped raise awareness of how coastal management schemes are funded and what the next steps are, and enabled people to give feedback on the shortlisted options.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for the Coastal Management and Environmental Services at North Norfolk District Council said “I would like to thank people for attending in the numbers they did. All the information from the day is now on our website and we will be contacting people shortly to keep them updated.

“We spend around ÂŁ310,000 every year to maintain 21 miles of coastline that’s ÂŁ14,700 a mile. On top of this defences do require more substantial investment and in order to do this we have put an additional ÂŁ300,000 of district council funding towards this scheme to help secure further government funds.â€?

The scheme is in the outline stage and the more detailed proposals are being finalised this Spring.

Council calls on ‘Absent Voters’ to refresh their signatures - Keep your right to a vote -

More than 2,500 people defined as ‘long-term absent voters’ will receive letters from North Norfolk District Council asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.

The letters have been sent out to postal voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years and not updated in that time. Anyone in this category who wants to remain an ‘absent voter’ will need to send in a new signature.

Returning the completed form by 2 March will ensure absent voters remain eligible to vote by post in future elections. If the deadline of 2 March is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.

Anyone with concerns about the process should contact Electoral Services at register@north-norfolk.gov.uk or by telephone on 01263 516046.

An Audience with the North Walsham & District Community Archive Have you got photos of North Walsham and the area which you'd like to find out more about? How would you like to come and spend an afternoon in the comfortable surroundings of the North Walsham Atrium Theatre and find out more about the history of our town? And it’s free!

Please dust off those old photos and bring them along!

We have held many photo exhibitions and film shows in the town over the years but thought it might be nice if the public could attend an event where they could join in, ask questions and even present their own photographs for discussion. We hope to have all the members of the Archive Committee present, along with some specially selected VIPs. We will have the facility of the theatre’s big screen to show items for discussion, while some of our group members face the audience to answer questions about all aspects of the archive and the town's history.

We already have a very successful Facebook Group www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive which acts as a great forum for this kind of interaction but we are aware that many people in the town would like to participate in the discussions but have no access to the internet or our Facebook group.

We hope this free event will be a fantastic opportunity to not only make the group more accessible to the public but we may also acquire new material for the archive (which will be scanned on the day if visitors are willing) and fill in gaps in our own knowledge of the town's history.

This event is the brainchild of long-time committee member Brian Hedge, who has presented many film shows about local history over the years. It is planned to be in the format of the popular "An audience with..." TV shows, where roaming microphones will be used enable everybody to hear audience members’ questions. We will then try and answer those questions as best we can - with the combined knowledge of the committee, our extensive computer-based archive (which will be on site and connected to the big screen to show examples, if possible) and hopefully the knowledge of other audience members!

We will have other committee members taking notes and recording the event so we don't miss anything.

This special event will be held on the afternoon of Saturday 25 February between 2pm and 5pm at the Atrium Theatre, North Walsham, Spenser Avenue, NR28 9HZ. From 2pm to 2.30pm there will be tea, coffee and biscuits available in the foyer, where we will also have scanning facilities in case anybody has any specific images they would like included in the show.

Also Barry Holden's extensive "Then & Now" collection of photographs will be available to browse. We then move into the theatre for a 2.30pm start.

Entry is free to ticket holders. 160 tickets will be available from Saturday 11 February on a “first come, first served” basis by calling in to Express Printing & Stationery in the Market Place, North Walsham in person. Tickets cannot be reserved via phone.

Don't forget you can view around 700 photos of North Walsham and the district via our main website at www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk

Take your Cue to Support Seaside Theatre

It takes more than acting and creative talent to keep a community theatre in the spotlight – it also requires funding.

And Sheringham Little Theatre is appealing for more business sponsors to support its work staging of the performing arts.

The venue generates income from a widening programme of events – from drama and music to cinema and live arts screenings – as well as its popular Hub coffee bar. But it also relies on support from the community it serves, including businesses, groups and individuals.

The Little Theatre is stepping up its drive to find more sponsors – including seeking its first ever “gold” backer.

Sponsorship can be for a full year with packages ranging from bronze (£695 a year plus VAT), through silver (£1250) to gold (£4950). But it can also include individual events or seasons, such as summer drama and pantomime, with backers gaining publicity through programme and in-venue advertising.

During the recent pantomime season, sponsors dropped in to meet the cast during rehearsals and after shows. And they spoke of how backing the popular theatre also provided the businesses with a stage for entertaining and informing existing and potential clients.

01692 405301

Mark Loveday from financial planners Loveday and Partners said “I enjoy being involved with Sheringham Little Theatre because of the wonderful work they do in the community. The quality of the performances combined with the passion and enthusiasm of all the support cast makes this a real gem in our society. Playing a small role in the ongoing success of the theatre is truly a pleasure for our firm.”

Solicitors Clapham and Collinge have used the venue for a breakfast seminar advising businesses and individuals how to avoid common legal pitfalls which can ruin commercial and family lives.

Marketing manager Louis Hilldrup-Boorman said “The award-winning theatre, which is down the road from our office, offers year-round entertainment for all the family is incredibly important to our community. We are proud sponsors of our neighbours.”

The Hub coffee bar also provides a friendly meeting space which Clapham and Collinge regularly uses for client meetings and legal seminars.

Theatre trustee Peter Davies, who deals with sponsorship, said "Sponsorship is absolutely key to the long-term sustainability of the theatre and we are so grateful for the support of backers who enable us to continue to offer a wide variety of both professional and

amateur productions.”

Other sponsors are Dardan Security, Breakwater IT, Swains PLC, Paston Sixth Form College, Lawrences Garages, Loveday and Partners, M+A Partners, Sharps, EBS, Beeston Regis Holiday Park, and Norfolk Country Cottages.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said sponsorship was vital in keeping the theatre running, even more so during a time of grant cutbacks.

“We are so grateful for the monetary support given by our sponsors, but in return our venue provides them with an ideal fully equipped venue where they can entertain clients, or stage corporate events.”

Salmon en papillote (in a paper bag)

We’ve finally come out of our winter hibernation and, complete with a lick of paint and various other refurbishments, re-opened for business at the end of January. Our first big occasion was Burn’s Night, complete with authentic Scottish piper, who was excellent but rather loud. The new sea defences on the seafront took quite a battering from the decibel count and the windows shook as he strode

majestically though the hallways. It brought to mind the old Scottish saying that a gentleman is someone who plays the bagpipes… and doesn’t. It also becomes clear why bagpipes are mainly heard in the still of dawn beside an empty loch; we surmise it’s because the piper’s wife has told him to get as far away from her as possible. Joking aside Peter was absolutely superb, and the evening was a great success.

More full days of children’s activities offered by North Norfolk District Council during half term Kids’ Zone : jump, run and play all day - February half term sporting timetable altered to help families

The regular school holiday programme of sporting activities for children run by North Norfolk District Council has been given a fresh look for February half term.

A new focus on full days of activities running from 9.30am to 3pm has been adopted after feedback from parents, instead of a mix of mainly shorter sessions and an occasional full day.

The same feedback has also led to the sports teams offering early drop off and late pick up, meaning the day can be extended to 8am to 4.30pm.

The full days are priced at £10, plus £2 for each of the extended 90 minutes at either end of the day.

Full days will be held at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham community sports centres, with one half day at Stalham. Activities include ball games, football fun day, multisports and street dance. The days will serve different age groups ranging from four to 12 years old.

Full details of locations, dates, times and costs can be found at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/sports/docs/Sports-and-winter-17.pdf Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said “We have listened to the views of both parents and young people, and used that information to change what we offer in our sports centres during half term and holidays.

Escaping Hitler – Joe Stirling tells his life story

Students and staff at Paston Sixth Form College were honoured to receive a visit from local Kindertransport refugee survivor, Mr Joe Stirling, on 25 January.

Joe visited the college along with his biographer Phyllida Scrivens, author of ‘Escaping Hitler, a Jewish Boy’s Quest for Freedom and his Future’. Together they delivered a talk that was incredibly powerful and moving.

Over 100 students gathered to hear Joe tell the story of how he escaped from Nazi Germany – a story filled with drama and tension. As a 14 year old boy, Joe walked from Germany to Holland in an attempt to escape Nazi Germany. However, he had to return to Germany to catch a place on one of the last Kindertransport - the trains which evacuated Jewish children from the perils of Nazi Germany.

Phyllida then went on to explain the process of writing a biography and discuss the impact meeting Joe has had on her life. One fortunate group of students also had lunch with Joe, Phyllida and Principal Kevin Grieve, and so had the opportunity to discuss Joe's experiences with him further.

The visit was organised by the English department as English Language and Literature students have been studying the play ‘Kindertransport’, a moving drama which addresses the impact being part of the Kindertransport has had both on survivors and future generations.

English teacher Naomi Hardman said “Joe and Phyllida’s visit was an amazing experience. Hearing Joe talk about his life was moving and

humbling for all concerned. The students will also now be able to interpret the play ‘Kindertransport’ in a new and more personal context”.

Student Abby Simm added “Listening to such a powerful talk about how it personally affected Joe really put the play into perspective and

emotionally hit everyone in the room.”

Student Alice Skippings also added “Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity, it was wonderful! I would say that listening to his experiences gave both historical and personal context to an already emotionally charged play, and meeting someone who's seen so much in his life made it easier to be empathetic towards the characters' decisions throughout the story”.

Phyllida Scrivens’ biography of Joe Stirling ‘Escaping Hitler : A Jewish Boy’s Quest for Freedom and His Future’ - is published by Pen and Sword Books (January 2016). Further information can be found on her website, “escapinghitler.com”.

Sheringham Shoal helps About with Friends become ‘green'

A small group of supporters, trustees and members of the Cromer-based organisation, About with Friends, gathered with representatives of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm at its operational base on 24 January, to witness the ‘Grand Switch On' of a new lighting system.

Ross McMillan (far right) addresses guests of About with Friends at the Grand Switch On

The replacement of old fluorescent tubing with modern, long-lasting LED tubes was made possible by a £5,000 grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund.

Responding to thanks from Helen Dalton-Hare, founder and CEO of About with Friends, Ross McMillan, Head of Operations at Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm said "The company set up its Community Fund in 2010 to help North Norfolk community groups finance projects that focus on renewable energy, marine environment and safety, sustainability or education in these areas. The About with Friends project to install LED lighting fell neatly within these parameters, and the Fund panel was very pleased to be able to play a part in the successful changeover."

The speeches were followed by canapés served by members of ‘About with Friends'.

Safe and effective Laser Hair Removal for all skin types Why it is a great idea to see us.

When it comes to laser hair and tattoo removal it is the wild west in this country. There is no shortage of new places opening up at every corner. We are seeing increasing number of patients who are either dissatisfied or have been harmed because of poorly trained and unregulated providers and cheap copycat or downright dangerous and unapproved machines.

As we all know one size does not fit all. There is simply no machine which is suitable for every person's needs. With this in mind we have invested heavily in modern high-end medical machines that have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. All our therapists also undergo rigorous initial and on going training in laser safety.

We have helped thousands of patients remove unwanted hair, ingrowing hair and rashes, pseudofolliculitis barbae North Walsham Times 512 February 11th 2017

Caucasian patients are generally treated with Alexandrite laser or IPL machine made by worlds leading medical laser company- Lumenis corporation.

Sometimes additional lasers are required so we also have a selection of diode lasers. In general though we prefer our three "big-boys" as pictured here.

So if you have wanted safe and effective Laser Hair Removal at an affordable price-come and see us. It simply is not worth taking chances and trying anything other than a reputable clinic with lot's of experience and FDA approved medical lasers. 13

Coastal Community Funding Boost for Sheringham and Blakeney Welcomed

Two bids supported by North Norfolk District Council to fund ‘Coastal Community Teams’ have been given the green light by Government. The successful bids for Sheringham and Blakeney Channel will receive £10,000 each from Government and become part of a nationwide network of Coastal Community Teams.

The announcement brings the total number of Coastal Community Teams to four in North Norfolk. Back in 2015 CCT funding was approved for Wells-next-the-Sea and the ‘Deep History Coast’ (Weybourne to Cart Gap – centred on Cromer). The bid for Blakeney is a consortium of local organisations primarily concerned with addressing the navigation of the Channel. The Sheringham bid is for a wide range of community organisations to work together to develop innovative ways of maintaining the vitality of the town centre.

In Sheringham, the money for the Coastal Community Team will be used to develop ideas to help keep the town centre and the seafront vibrant and attractive, for example by exploring options for improving lighting on the promenade and possible measures to better accommodate pedestrians in the town centre.

The Sheringham Coastal Community Team will involve Sheringham Town Council, Sheringham Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Norfolk County Council.

In Blakeney the grant will be used to develop a plan for the management of the marine waters inland of Blakeney Point. The first stage of the project will be to develop an Economic Plan, which has to be submitted to the Department by 31 March.

The Blakeney team is keen to involve stakeholders and other interested parties of the local community in this project. The Team membership and structure is currently being developed, with an initial public meeting planned for 21 February in order to communicate the objectives of the project and to invite comments and volunteers.

The Team plans to communicate further details of this project once the membership of the Team has been formed and following feedback from the community.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

The Coastal Community Team initiative is to provide a catalyst for local people to get together to address the needs of their areas and help improve local economic prospects. North Norfolk District Council is happy to support these new teams, to provide help and advice and further assistance in applying for further funding to help put the ideas into action.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “Sheringham and Blakeney are great locations. North Norfolk has fantastic towns and coastline and has such a lot to offer residents and tourists alike.

“These grants will help Sheringham and Blakeney to develop new projects and schemes which will benefit the economy of the area.”

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB

North Walsham Probus Club members received a presentation last month on the City of Norwich by Brian Hedges.

While many people, visitors and residents alike appreciate the City’s architecture and medieval atmosphere, one may suspect that far less understand the historical depth it has to offer.

The building of the cathedral was commenced at the end of the 11th century, shortly after the conquest, using stone imported from Caen in France, using water borne transport up the Wensum. The city wall was begun about a century later using local carstone, and completed during the early part of the twelfth century. During this period Norwich ranked

Crayford and Abbs Ltd

second only to London as city of importance.

The 19th century saw major changes, when the city became industrialized, causing people to migrate from areas of rural poverty to the cities. The landscape changed with the appearance of factory chimneys, breweries, dyers and shoe manufacturing.

Perhaps the most prominent was Colman’s mustard factory. Colman’s proved to be a philanthropic employer providing education, at the rate of one penny for the first child and a halfpenny for siblings. A pension scheme was also introduced, yielding eight shillings per week upon retirement. It may be relevant to note that compulsory free education did not

become available until 1870 and state pensions were not introduced until the beginning of the 20th century.

Another significant feature of that period was the mobility offered by means of transport, other than walking. Initially, this may have been the horse drawn carriage, but during the latter part of the century steam was having an impact, not only upon manufacturing but also transport with the introduction of the railways. Brian showed shots of many former buildings, and their replacements, adding to the knowledge of members. Two buildings were especially prominent, Norwich Union, now Aviva, and the Royal Arcade.

On Cloud 9

Nine Paston Sixth Form College students, a record for the College, received a very special New Year’s present when they learned that they had won places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities for September 2017.

The nine had to demonstrate outstanding academic ability in their GCSE and AS results and in their predicted A level grades. These, together with their personal statement and College reference, got them an interview. Winning a place was down to their own performance in the highly competitive interviews. They clearly were successful in convincing interviewers of their academic credentials and potential. Being part of the College A+ and Oxbridge Programmes run by Katharine Day supported the students in their ambition to aim for the very top. The scheme has been very successful, increasing the numbers each year aiming for Oxbridge or the top Russell Group Universities. What does a solicitor do? By Miranda Marshall - Director, Hayes + Storr

This article follows on from my last article on how to become a lawyer. The next step is to explain the work that a solicitor does.

A solicitor is a confidential legal adviser who combines legal expertise and people-skills to provide expert legal advice and assistance in range of situations.

Our work covers the following:

Everyday matters for private clients, such as buying and selling a house, making a Will and winding up people’s affairs when they have died. It also covers advice when relationships break-down and other family matters. Helping with the legal side of business and its transactions.

Protecting people, by advising them on their rights and making sure that they are treated fairly. This includes bringing and enforcing claims through the Courts and tribunals.

industry, local and central government, the Courts, the Armed Forces and Charities.

Solicitors are employed at all levels of seniority. A solicitor in private practice may well become a partner, i.e. a proprietor who owns a share in and runs their own business. This means that they take a share in profits but also take the risk of market-forces and fluctuating success, just like any other business.

Solicitors work across all of England and Wales and there are firms in every town. Conversely, work in overseas offices brings the opportunity to travel and would involve advising clients abroad on English, EU or foreign law.

Of the 130,000 solicitors in England and Wales, two-thirds work in private practice. Scotland has its own legal system. They range from sole practitioners (who work on their own with support staff) through to multi-national firms with hundreds of partners, thousands of staff and offices across the world.

The law, as a career, is hugely varied and offers chances for those with wide-ranging interests, skills and ambitions. It stretches geographically from major-conurbations to country practices, from litigious court work through to non-contentious advisory and transactional work. It is as varied as the wealth and diversity of the people and businesses it advises.

Other work is in specialist areas: insurance, intellectual property (“I.P.”) i.e. advising on patents and copyrights, shipping, banking, the media and entertainment.

If you require advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you require advice on any other legal matter please telephone our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or email law@hayesstorr.com.

Some solicitors work with individual people; including representing them in the Courts and tribunals. Or, they might work advising businesses and corporate clients in areas ranging from employment law to contracts, through to company mergers and acquisitions. In counties such as Norfolk, there are thriving practices specialising in advising farmers on all aspects of agricultural legal matters.

The remaining third of solicitors work ‘in house’ in commerce and

Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. Norman Lamb welcomes 'constructive' meeting with Prime Minister on NHS and Care Convention

A cross party group of MPs co-coordinated by Norman Lamb have welcomed the outcome of a meeting with the Prime Minister on the future of the NHS and Social Care.

In a meeting with a delegation of MPs from the Lib Dems, Labour and the Conservatives earlier this month, the Prime Minister agreed to initiate a cross-party dialogue with her newly-appointed Health Adviser, James Kent.

The meeting was attended by Norman Lamb, Sarah Wollaston, Dan Poulter, Hugo Swire, Meg Hillier, and Frank Field, representing a much wider group of colleagues who have called on the government to establish an NHS and Care Convention.

Commenting after the meeting, Norman Lamb MP said: “I very much welcomed the positive and constructive discussion with the Prime 18

Minister. Mrs May appeared seemed willing to engage in a serious dialogue about how best to secure the future of our NHS and social care services. The future of the NHS and Social Care is more important than party politics, which has completely failed to come up with real solutions. The public are crying out for politicians to stop shouting at each other, and instead work together to make difficult decisions to ensure that patients get the right care and treatment when they need it. There is a real urgency to this situation, and now is the time to act. Today’s meeting was an encouraging first step, and I look forward to meeting with her advisers as soon as possible.”

Sarah Wollaston said "The scale of the challenge across health and social care is so great that we have to take a cross party approach to finding solutions and setting out the options to the public, including the consequences of inaction." North Walsham Times 512 February 11th 2017

North Norfolk District Council calls for groups to join in the Great British Spring Clean

North Norfolk District Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about across Britain cleaning up their local communities in March 2017.

North Norfolk Volunteer Car Schemes to come together

North Norfolk Community Transport has announced that it will be merging its volunteer car scheme ‘MediRide’ with a similar car scheme operated by Norfolk County Council. Over the next few weeks MediRide passengers will be gradually redirected to Norfolk County Council’s Transport Plus service, part funded by North Norfolk CCG.

MediRide has helped transport hundreds of people to medical appointments at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Cromer Hospital, local doctors’ surgeries and other medical establishments. Transport Plus provides a similar service across the whole of Norfolk. Both schemes operate using volunteer drivers in their own cars.

The cost of using Transport Plus will remain the same, with passengers giving the volunteer drivers 45p per mile allowance, paid at the end of each journey. Passengers need to book their journey with Transport Plus minimum three days in advance.

Matt Townsend, North Norfolk Community Transport Chief Executive “This change has come as a result of our strong working relationship with Norfolk County Council where we have identified an overlap in services. By bringing MediRide and Transport Plus together we will free up capacity to improve and develop our minibus-based transport schemes including Dial-a-Ride which now has more demand than ever before, whilst ensuring the people of North Norfolk can still access essential medical appointments.”

“We wish to sincerely thank all the volunteers who have driven for MediRide over the last few years and helped the people of North Norfolk access medical appointments.”

North Norfolk Community Transport is currently working with existing volunteers to arrange a smooth transition to the Transport Plus service. To book a journey with Transport Plus please contact 0344 800 8020.

The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.

NNDC will be encouraging and supporting groups that want to help clear up litter that blights the streets, parks and beaches in our district.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “We have been working hard with our communities to keep our beaches, villages and towns clean and tidy. The Great British Spring Clean is a chance to keep up the great work and encourage more people to take part in making North Norfolk an even better place to live.”

Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up 3-5 March, including the Women’s Institute, National Trust and RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses.

TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support to the campaign, which is backed by anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

If you want to take part in the campaign or to set up your own event, contact North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Team at cleansing@north-norfolk.gov.uk or 01263 516195.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have mentioned the actions people need to take when they see a stray cat in their garden to ensure they are not stealing someone’s beloved companion. However, after taking appropriate action, there are some that are indeed strays and need to come into care. It may be that we cannot take them into care straight away because all our pens are full so we will ask the person who has contacted us to ensure the cat is fed and has shelter until we are in a position to do so.

Because we do not have any background information on the cat once we have space to take it in, we will get our vets to blood test for FIV and FELV. If this provides a positive result, further investigations are made at specialist centres to confirm the diagnosis. Fortunately, the result from these will often come back negative. However, if the result is positive, we can only rehome cats with FIV to indoor homes, either by themselves, or with other FIV cats. Unfortunately, if the cat is FELV positive, it will need to be put to sleep, something we have rarely needed to do. Last year 3 cats tested positive for FIV but none for FELV.

Two of the cats, both ginger boys, quickly found new homes with people who wanted indoor cats because they lived on busy roads. Grooming Parlour Garfie, the second of these to arrive, came into care with other cats. When his blood Full Grooming & tests indicated he was Hydrobathing Kerstin Rogers Available FIV positive, the other cats were also 01692 501212 tested but their tests 07817 179228 proved negative. debonairdogs@btinternet.com Herard, the last to

arrive, was a stray and would have been offered a home by the people who handed him in but they were unable to do this because they had cats already. He too was with us for a very short time. Harvey, who arrived first, was also a stray, and in very bad condition when he arrived. Here again he would have had a home with the people handing him in if they had not already had two cats. Although it took a few weeks for him to recover, today he is a picture of health and we now have to watch his weight as he loves his food. If he sees you with a dish of food in your hands he will jump up and down on his back legs with Harvey, our lovely FIV boy excitement. Harvey is a little older than the other two but a great favourite with everyone who comes to Dilham. We would all dearly love to see him settled.

Although not a stray, Leo another cat who came into care recently, needed an operation as his eyelashes were ingrown and causing serious discomfort. He has now had “cosmetic surgery” to rectify the situation and should get a clean bill of health from his vet next week. He will then be available for re-homing. Leo is a lovely friendly cat, finally receiving the treatment he needed, who is appreciating the attention and loving care he is having and is another favourite with us all.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

A fishy encounter at Toll Barn Vets!

You could be mistaken for thinking that the life of a goldfish is not a particularly exciting affair and usually doesn’t involve venturing outside of their aquarium or pond. However, we would like you to meet Bob!

Goldfish are known to live to over 25 years old when properly cared for and Bob is at the ripe age of 20 years old.

He was brought in to see the Toll Barn Vets team when his owner noticed a large lump growing on his fin.

therefore depth of anaesthetic and a catheter placed into Bob’s mouth to allow administration of carefully titrated doses of anaesthetic water in order to keep him safely anaesthetised. His scales were kept moist throughout as drying out damages the mucus layer that covers the scales and risks post operative complications.

Examination confirmed this lump was unfortunately a tumour. We believe that all pets should have the highest possible standards of care regardless of their age and species so we acted swiftly to operate and remove the lump. Bob was anaesthetised by gradually adding a powder based anaesthetic agent to a small amount of his normal water whilst monitoring his depth of Ovenclean will transform your oven and anaesthesia. put the sparkle back into your kitchen!

Once he was anaesthetised he was removed from the water and placed on a waterproof drape. Our nursing team sprung into action using a Doppler to monitor Bob’s heart rate and

Public Space Protection Order consultation underway

North Norfolk District Council calls on public to comment on locations of new Public Space Protection Orders

Public Space Protection Orders impose conditions on the use of an area, such as restrictions on dogs or the drinking alcohol in a public place. North Norfolk District Council is currently consulting with residents on a large number of Public Space Protection Orders.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “This is a great chance for residents to have their say on protection of local areas from behaviours that could affect enjoyment of their environment.

“It is vital we all strike a balance as a community between tolerance and ensuring a few individuals don’t spoil our public spaces for the rest of us or endanger our environment. Please take part in the consultation and have your say.”

Public Space Protection Orders or PSPOs were introduced under the Government’s Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, 2014. The Orders forbid certain activities in a geographical area and replace Gating Orders, Dog Control Orders and Designated Public Place Orders.

Activities covered by PSPOs include restricting the use of a highway late at night, the drinking of alcohol in a public space or restricting dogs from a particular, designated location.

The Council proposes to introduce three district-wide PSPOs. These are: ■ No dog fouling (this is currently in place under previous legislation): any person seen not clearing up after their dog on any publicly accessible land

New for 2017 - Norfolk Artisan Fair

Norfolk Artisan Fair is set to launch on Easter Sunday 2017.

The co-ordinator, Glyn, ran the predecessor Weybourne Meet the Producers Market and said: “the fair will host up to 40 artisans from across Norfolk displaying their handmade crafts and foods to up to 3000 holidaymakers plus local visitors at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, with extended opening hours from 10-4. 2016 was a record season for tourism in North Norfolk and this year is forecast to be even better – Kelling Heath has been supportive to small artisan businesses over the years with its sustainable-sourcing and hosting of our events. When the management were kind enough welcome us back this season, we were very keen

to accept. There is so much to do in the heart of the park, our fairs offer a great day out for all the family”.

Details of the events can be seen in the 2017 flyer to the left.

On the Up?

by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent

Too many times this season Norwich have given fans a sense of false hope by winning in around three games however things seem to be on the up although that is something I have felt many a time this season.

If city can mount the same kind of promotion charge we did back in 2015 then there could be hope for us making the playoffs however the automatics seem like a pipe dream with Newcastle and Brighton steadily distancing themselves from the pack of teams behind them.

Norwich seem to be taking steps in the right direction though, with two wins in the last two games against Wolves (3-1) and Birmingham (2-0) respectively, have pushed Norwich up the table. By no stretch of the imagination does this mean that good form is guaranteed as the Championship is amongst the toughest and most unpredictable leagues in the world, Alex Neil has also managed to keep his jib after losing to bottom table Rotherham proving that the board are hesitant to change manager at this point in the season and by now, its too late anyway and if some of Norwich’s key players

January's last two games saw the Vikings face top three opposition and they put in outstanding performances in both. They lost 27 -10 at Tring but, whilst the runaway League leaders were worthy winners, the score line flattered them. The Vikings then showed great resilience to beat Chingford at home. Just after the break, the score was 8 - 7 to the visitors and there it stayed for the next 35 minutes, Chingford virtually camping deep in Vikings' territory. Two minutes from time though Matt Hodgson kicked a 40 metre penalty to give them victory and lift them to fourth place.

Tom Browes (pictured) joined a select group when he made his 100th appearance for the Vikings in the Tring game ; just 26 other players have reached that landmark in the past quarter of a century. The versatile 30 year old - he can play at prop or hooker - began

can regain form coupled with replacements for Martin Olsson who’s left for Swansea and Brady who appears to be off to Burnley then Norwich should be able to make the play offs this season.

As for replacements for Brady and Olsson, at the time of writing this (January 30th) it appears that Ajax full back Mitchell Dijks could join on loan and Yanic Wildschut from Wigan who is a left winger.

playing rugby at the age of four ; he made his Vikings debut in 2008 and is in his second spell at Scottow. A Manager in the Medical Supplies industry, Tom lives in Mulbarton with his wife and two young children. The under 13s remain unbeaten; at a recent County Festival they didn't even concede a try! Planning is well advanced for the annual Minis Tour, which this year sees them stay at an Outdoor Activity Centre on Mersea Island and concludes with the Chelmsford Minis Festival.

The Vikings next home game is 18 February versus Fullerians, 3pm start.

North Walsham Table Tennis Dolphins take NWSCD the distance

A busy night at North Walsham Sports Centre saw three first round matches in the Handicap Doubles Cup take place with NWSCD’s Stuart Hook (27), Andy Tuddenham (29) and Phil Mole (28) hosting LCC Dolphin’s Keegan Hammond (38), Chris Francis (44) and Mick Hammond (36). The handicapping meant the hosts started on either 27 or 28 points with the visitors starting on either 37, 40 or 41.

NWSCD won the first three battles – two of them 51-49 and the other on the golden point at 50-50 – however Dolphins fought back to level the tie at 3-3. Tuddenham and Mole beat Keegan Hammond and Francis 51-50 before the Hammonds forced a nail-biting decider with a 51-49 defeat of Hook and Tuddenham. Hook and Mole started the ninth battle 27-40 down against Francis and Mick Hammond but came through 51-48 to seal NWSCD’s 5-4 win. On the adjoining table, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott (16), Richard Westgate (16) and Richard Porritt (18) hosted Mundesley D’s Sarah Tudhope (42), Sheila Prime (45) and Gudrun Scham (39) with the hosts always starting on 16 or 17 and the visitors in the early forties. NWSCB got off to a slow start but soon found their momentum winning the match
