Yesterday’s Love and Laughter and now Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes

Did you know that there are two new books available set in a village not so very far from where you live?

The first one, Yesterday’s Love and Laughter, appeared about a year ago and is set in the 1950s and tells the tale of people who we all know. There is a young farm-worker who lives alone in a tied cottage until his sister comes to live with him. She is not easy to live with but, as usual, the days pass. He works on a small farm along with his workmates and it is fascinating to read about the kind of work that farm-workers did about 60 years ago. We pass a year on the farm and see the pattern of the changing seasons. Changes also take place in the home and these are easier to live with.

Yesterday’s Love and Laughter Get on board with the RNLI in and now Yesterday’s Hearts Happisburgh – they’re recruiting and Homes lifesaving volunteers now!

Continued from front cover... This book was enjoyed by many people and so more copies of this are now available. Having read it, there are many who wanted to know how the people in it got on and so a brand new book, Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes, will soon be available.

But don’t miss the first one.

Geoffrey Dixon, the author was born in a nearby village and lives nearby as he has retired locally. He has enjoyed an exciting and interesting career that has taken him to different parts of the county and country and indeed in countries far away. But his roots were so firmly planted in 1935 in a village near here that they cannot be pulled up. In his early years as the son of a smallholder, work on the fields and with the pigs and chickens was a natural and expected part of life and so time and memory remove any barriers to him revisiting places and faces of yesterday.

Both books will shortly be available in a shop near you now. If you do buy one, Geoffrey trusts that you will enjoy these gentle but interesting, crime-free but exciting, stories. If you are new to these books, it is important to read Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter first. If you buy both you have a treat in store for these dark winter nights.

Now available at Forrests Newsagents in Stalham, The Showcase Gallery in North Walsham and Jarrolds in Cromer.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR RIDING WITH THE DISABLED

We are friendly groups who meet either Tuesday or Wednesday mornings 9.30am to noon during term time at Squirrel Wood Riding School, Weybourne. For further information please contact Pamela, 01263 712192 or Gwynneth 01263 823188.

Volunteers from Happisburgh lifeboat station are looking for new crew members and shop volunteers to be part of their life saving team and are inviting you to one of two recruitment open days on Saturday 18 March and Tuesday 28 March.

The RNLI at Happisburgh is calling for people from all walks of life to help crew the lifeboats and assist with launch and recovery when they go on service. Charlotte Siely, one of the Helms at Happisburgh, is keen to stress that you don’t need to have sea-going experience to get involved with the RNLI.

She explained ‘Only 10 per cent of the RNLI’s new recruits come with professional maritime experience. Our lifeboat women and men come from all backgrounds.

‘We are looking for anyone aged 17 years and over who is living or working within 10 minutes of the lifeboat station. You need to be willing to volunteer some of your free time to join, which is what I believe to be one of the most exhilarating and rewarding voluntary services that is out there.’

The RNLI provides fantastic training to turn ordinary people into lifesavers and by volunteering; people will gain great experience, knowledge and skills.

For those who don’t want to get involved on the lifeboats, there are other support and fundraising opportunities with the RNLI in Happisburgh, including assisting with events, helping with publicity and selling souvenirs in the shop.

If you are interested in volunteering for the RNLI, you are invited to call in to the upcoming recruitment events at the lifeboat station in Happisburgh on Saturday 18 March anytime between 10am and 2pm or on Tuesday 28 March anytime between 6pm and 8pm. If you can’t make either of these events, please contact the station on happisburgh@rnli.org.uk or by calling 07901 891647.

Come and have a brew with the crew, a chat about what they do, have a tour of the lifeboat station and find out how you can help.

Worstead 'Tigers Tea'

Worstead Pre-schoolers have been looking at the book the 'Tiger Who Came To Tea' by Judith Kerr. They decided to ask their families to their very own café. They made sandwiches, served drinks and cake, washed up and even used the till to obtain some tips! A lovely time was had by all.

If you would like to visit pre-school with a view to your child starting or put them on our waiting list, please telephone Sue or Paula on 01692 535692, or visit our website: www.worsteadpreschool.co.uk

Aylsham Burns Night Supper

Burns Night Supper with a difference was organised by Cittaslow Aylsham and Slow Food Aylsham at the end of January. While most of the evening followed the timehonoured pattern, the Address to the Haggis was performed by local lady, Grizelda Tyler who, with her Sottish ancestry, added a female dimension to Alan O’Rourke Immortal Memory Alan O’Rourke proposed a toast to the a traditionally male event. immortal memory of Robbie Burns The customary menu of Haggis, Neeps & Tatties was supplemented by cottage pie for those whose taste does not extend to the mighty Scottish dish but everybody agreed that the dessert of Cranachan (whipped cream, oats, raspberries and a dash of whisky) was a great finale to a delicious meal.

Over 60 diners enjoyed the evening with proceeds going to support the work of Slow Food and Cittaslow in the town, including the annual Food Festival and summer cooking demonstrations in the Market Place as well as other, non-food-related activities.

North Norfolk District Council hosts exhibition of photography New print and canvas collection showcases local photographer

North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery welcomes local artist John Mezzetti with a collection of photographs.

Cromer resident John has been a photographer for 30 years.

This collection of prints and prints on canvas explore portraits with landscape, urban and environmental themes.

John said “I first became interested in photography in my late teens, and took an O level in it at Paston Sixth Form in North Walsham. My work comes out of where I live. North Norfolk offers so much material that can be interpreted in so many ways that there really never is a blank canvas here.

Roots taken at Felbrigg

“There is also a very particular light in North Norfolk, near the coast – the mornings and nightfall are a photographer’s friend, every day there is something new that can be caught by the lens. I’m so pleased to be able to exhibit at the District Council.”

John’s photographs will be for sale.

Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “It’s great to see photography in the Council’s exhibition space. Photography is something so many people have the technology to do these days and to see it done well can be hugely inspirational. Do come and see John’s exhibition, and if you are an artist yourself then apply to show your work in the Council gallery.”

The exhibition opened on 31 January and runs to 21 March at the

Dinosaur Adventure

The children from Worstead Pre School had a Jurassic time at the Dinosaur Park. Fun was had by parents and children and staff as they explored the grounds, finding out facts about the dinosaurs and how they lived.

We fed the pigs and looked at the farm animals and reptiles then headed to the big Lost World Amazing Adventure Indoor Play Area for a sliding and climbing experience.

Everyone was tired at the end of an adventurous and exciting day.

North Norfolk District Council calls for groups to join in the Great British Spring Clean

North Norfolk District Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about across Britain cleaning up their local communities in March 2017.

The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.

NNDC will be encouraging and supporting groups that want to help clear up litter that blights the streets, parks and beaches in our district. Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “We have been working hard with our communities to keep our beaches, villages and towns clean and tidy. The Great British Spring Clean is a chance to keep up the great work and encourage more people to take part in making North Norfolk an even better place to live.”

Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up 3-5 March, including the Women’s Institute, National Trust and RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses.

TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support to the campaign, which is backed by anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

If you want to take part in the campaign or to set up your own event, contact North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Team at cleansing@north-norfolk.gov.uk or 01263 516195.

looking for your dream home? Don’t forget to make sure your new property is not carrying any hidden liabilities.

When buying a house do you know what kind of issues are checked by your solicitor during the transaction? It is the role of your conveyancer to ensure that the property you are purchasing is legally sound, the rights of clients are protected during the transaction and your new property is not carrying any hidden liabilities.

Dangerous or Damaged Fencing? Get ready BEFORE the winds hit

We can help with all types of fencing! We’ll get it done! Call 01692 405301

For most of us, buying or selling a property is one of the most significant financial transactions we ever carry out, so it is vital to get the best possible expertise to guide you through all stages of the property transaction.

A lot of our legal work is reviewing properties in rural areas throughout Norfolk which do not have access to mains drainage i.e. sewers. In the absence of effluent infrastructure, a number of independent sewerage systems can be utilised to provide rural sanitation. However, each type brings with it a raft of regulations and potential pitfalls, with large sums of money at risk if they are not up to scratch.

A recent property transaction in rural Norfolk saw the discovery of a Septic tank that was over 100 years old buried in the garden! Bard and bullets in live orchestral concert

A magical mix of classical music and words by William Shakespeare are being conjured up in a live orchestral concert at Sheringham Little Theatre in March.

The Flights of Fantasy evening features Sinfonia Viva, well known in north Norfolk for their appearances at Blickling Hall's summer Proms concerts.

It combines two works of "storytelling bravado" - Der Freischutz by Weber is based on a German folk tale of romance, rivalry and marksmanship, and The Bard's dreamlike A Midsummer Night's Dream mingled with

Mendelssohn’s music.

Organisers say both works take a highlydramatic and carnivalesque approach to issues such as feminism, relationships and love.

Actor and producer Simon Hollingworth and the orchestra have reimagined the two classic tales through narration and chamber music. It is part of a series of high quality orchestral concerts developed by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with national charity Orchestras Live which aims to take top quality classical music to new people and places.

The concert is at Sheringham Little Theatre on Saturday March 4 at 7.30. Tickets are £18

Exciting things happening at Garden Centre Overstrand

Garden Centre Overstrand has seen a huge transformation over the last 9 months since the owner Victoria Sheridan has been in charge. The recent opening of the newly refurbished Coffee Shop, fittingly called The Potting Shed, is the newest addition to the fantastic improvements at the garden centre.

Serving locally and sustainably sourced produce, The Potting Shed offers an array of culinary delights.

Whether you fancy a warming bowl of soup, a scrummy slice of cake or something more substantial like a Sunday roast then you will

not be disappointed.

Garden Centre Manager, Sam Lowe said, ‘staff have worked tirelessly throughout January to refurbish the coffee shop, in order to offer our customers and visitors a warm and friendly environment. The Potting Shed is open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm and dogs are welcome in the walled courtyard’.

And if that wasn’t enough, the garden centre are now busy planning four market-style events throughout 2017. Dates for your diary: 4th June, 24th September, 5th November and 3rd December.

A newborn donkey foal stole the hearts of staff at Redwings Horse Sanctuary just in time for Valentine’s Day

At just two-weeks-old, an irresistibly cute newborn donkey foal called Amos arrived at Redwings’ headquarters in Hapton, near Norwich, on Wednesday 1 February alongside his mum Matilda and dad Jeremiah.

The tiny new addition to the Redwings family was so small that he had to be carried from the horse box into his stable where, after a quick look around, he was soon playfully jumping in the shavings and suckling from mum.

This adorable family unit was offered a home at the Sanctuary when their previous owner began to struggle to look after them due to ill health and contacted the charity for help.

Donkeys are sensitive souls who have complex care

needs, so Redwings has an open door policy for these lovable long-eared creatures.

Amos, Jeremiah and Matilda will remain under the watchful eye of Redwings’ veterinary and equine care teams at their headquarters for the next few months. While this site is closed to the public, it is hoped the gorgeous trio will be able to join a donkey herd at one of the charity’s visitor centres in the future.

Lynn Cutress, Redwings’ Chief Executive, said “Everyone at Redwings is absolutely smitten with Amos. He is only the fifth donkey foal to arrive at the Sanctuary in the past ten years so to say his arrival has caused a lot of excitement would be an understatement! We’re delighted that by offering

our help and expertise, this young family can remain together and receive the specialist care they need for the rest of their lives.

“It is thanks to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to provide a home for all three donkeys and we would welcome anyone who wishes to support us in their ongoing care and help Amos grow into a happy and healthy donkey to visit our website or call us to make a donation.”

If you would like to help Redwings help donkeys like Amos, Matilda and Jeremiah you can donate by calling 01508 481000 or visiting redwings.org.uk/ donating. Just £10 could fill a stable with bedding, while £15 could provide a donkey with hay for a month and £50 could cover the cost of a health check for a new arrival like Amos to the Sanctuary.

Romeo & Juliet Success

Paston Sixth Form College students performed Romeo & Juliet to packed audiences this week at the new Griffon Theatre. The play, directed and produced by Simon Thompson, George Norton and Jess Chamberlin, was a huge success.

Romeo & Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. The play was adapted where Verona is transported to modern day North Norfolk and the often oppositional worlds of North Walsham and Burnham Market.

The play was also adapted to include Romeo being played by a female character: Romea, and the issues that this raises within the world of the Play: This was very much the central starting point of the production. With February 2017 recognised as LGBT month, this opportunity highlighted relevant issues.

There were some extremely strong performances from all the cast. Special mention must go to Romea and Juliet, played by Emmie Wright and Emily Sidnell. They were supported by Lord Capulet Josh Hinds, Lady Capulet Kyla Harwood, and Lady Montague - Victoria Ing. Some of the fight scenes were extremely well performed with strong performances from Emily Palmer –

North Walsham Historical Society Royal British Legion – by Colin Chambers Colin began by giving a brief history of the Royal British Legion.

Since medieval times Camp Followers accompanying the troops to Battle set up a base just outside the battle area. After the battle, they would forage the dead for items of value. No provision was made for injured or sick soldiers or their families.

Neglect of the families was finally corrected 130 years ago when, in 1885, Major James Gildea wrote to the Times, and as a result the SSAFA (Soldiers Sailors, Airman Families Association) came into being. The British Legion was not formed until 15 May 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen established after the First World War. The Legion’s main purpose was to care for those who had suffered as a result of service in the Armed Forces during the war. Lancastrian Lance Bombardier Tom Lister was so moved that he decided, if the government was unable to do anything to improve the lives of ex-Servicemen, he would do something himself. This eventually led to the formation of The British Legion.

By the time of the Legion's formation in 1921, the tradition of an annual Two Minute Silence on Armistice Day in memory of the dead had been established. The first ever Poppy Appeal was held that year, with the first Poppy Day on 11 November 1921.

The Royal British Legion’s work is largely Representation – The Legion is very good at Representation bringing about The Armed Forces Covenant and the protection of War Pensions, Remembrance – The Legion is the National Custodian of Remembrance and Membership –

Tybalt, and Daisy Den Engelse – Mercutio. Others included in the feuding families were Ellen Smith as Benvolio, Isabella WhiteleyTye as Abraham, Kate Birkbeck as Balthasar, Gerard Earnshaw as Petruchio and Oli Bowling as Paris. There was also some wonderful support in a range of roles from Hatty Horscroft, Pippa Stebbings, Chris SaintonClark and Francesca Harker-York.

The play has played to all ages over the last week from local primary and secondary schools through to adults.

this is an area of concern, the Legion is losing more members than it is gaining (currently the UK membership is 236,000).

Welfare today is covered by SSAFA who are the UK Oldest National Tri Service Military Charity providing lifelong support for the Armed Forces and their families They have representatives throughout the world, and offices in most towns in the UK, our nearest is in Aylsham. Contact for assistance is generally through, for the Army the Regimental Associations in the first instance. For the Royal Navy the RN Benevolent Trust, and for the RAF the RAF Benevolent Fund, are approached. Mike Sothcott

Seeds

By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

Eating our lunch, a friend of mine asked, somewhat out of the blue, ‘Do those lotus seed heads make you feel uncomfortable?’ and pointed at a floral display. Looking at the curious, holed pods I replied, ‘no, not really’ and so he introduced me to the term Trypophobia – a proposed phobia of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. Lotus seed heads, along with other surfaces like honeycomb, makes his skin crawl and fills him with disgust. I hope he wasn’t put off his dinner too badly. This dark, bleak, time of year happens to be time for horticultural divulgence (or for some, restraint), poring through a plethora of seed catalogues, bringing new excitement and inspiration for the growing season. But what about the appreciation for the seed themselves? Well, did you know:

The oldest seed grown into a viable plant was Silene stenophylla (narrow-leafed campion), a flower native to Siberia of which more than 600,000 seed were found buried in squirrel hibernation burrows beneath the permafrost. Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the seed are 31,800 ±300 years old, from the Upper Palaeolithic, around the time early humans were creating cave art.

epiphytic orchids found in the rainforest and their size allows them to blow into the canopy to germinate. At 85 micrometres long (1 micrometre = 0.001 millimetre) they are below the resolving power of the human eye.

The largest seed in the world is produced by the Lodoicea maldivica palm (coco de mer) native to the Seychelles archipelago and surrounded by myth and legend. It can reach 30 cm long, with a 90cm circumference and weigh up to 25kg – oh, and it often resembles a human bottom, leading people to believe that the trees got up to make love on stormy nights. A historical botanical name for the plant was Lodoicea callipyge, with callipyge coming from the Greek meaning ‘beautiful buttocks’. If you want to incorporate seed heads as part of your garden’s interest, or as a boost for wildlife, here are some suggestions for you to grow at home: Dipsacus fullonum (teasel) Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) Lunaria annua (honesty) Helianthus (sunflower) Papaver somniferum (poppy) Phlomis russeliana (Turkish sage) Cynara cardunculus (cardoon)

01692 405301

The world’s smallest seeds are produced by certain tropical

Echinops ritro Allium Agapanthus Let us not forget ornamental grasses: Stipa gigantean (golden oats) Miscanthus sinensis

Some of these plants set lots of seed and spread quickly, so be sure to do some research before introducing them to your patch.

Clean and store your seed correctly to prevent mould, insect infestation or reduced viability (ability to germinate). It’s recommended that you dry your seeds thoroughly then store them in sealed jars in a dark, dry place with consistent cool temperatures. I shall collect and order in my seed with an additional gratitude this year, knowing that I will enjoy their forms and adaptations without the shudders, creeps or nausea of Trypophobia.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

I am delighted to be able to advise you that the two cats in care, mentioned in the last article, have now been chosen. Our lovely Harvey has been reserved and will be leaving at the end of the month. His new owner has only recently moved so wants to make sure everything is in place before Harvey takes up residence. Although we are pleased to know he will have a lovely home, we will miss this little character. Leo, the other cat mentioned, was given a clean bill of health when he went for a check up after his operation and, together with another new arrival called Ricky, has already left us for pastures new.

When people contact us to offer a cat a new home, Stephanie always checks to make sure that they have considered, not only the regular treatments for fleas and worms and yearly visits to the vets for vaccinations, but also how will they pay for those unexpected bills that can occur if a cat is ill and needs ongoing veterinary care. We have over the years been contacted, not only by distressed owners who cannot afford to pay for the treatment their cats need, either for illness or accidents, but also by vets when a cat has been signed over to them because the owner cannot afford to pay. We cannot stress enough how important it is to make contingency plans for these eventualities, either by taking out insurance or putting money aside to pay for unexpected bills.

The vets with whom we have accounts, all regularly provide their

Tommy

Our case this month is Tommy, he was a 12 year old German Shepherd who sadly passed away at the end of last year. His story though was an incredibly positive and remarkable one given that almost exactly a year before he was diagnosed with liver failure. At the time his owner brought him to us because she had noticed him being less active than usual and his abdomen appeared swollen. We immediately ran blood tests and carried out an abdominal ultrasound exam, all with Tommy’s owner

customers with Newsletters and we usually get copies of these sent to us. They usually give useful information on all small animals, either on general care or a specific problem that different animals may have and how it can be treated. We find these articles very useful and a recent one in the Westover Newsletter is one which we will share with all new owners of kittens (with their permission). This article gives excellent advice on how to integrate a kitten into its new home and can be viewed on the Westover Vets website.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

present for support as he was never my greatest fan!

Unfortunately his liver was cirrhotic and tests on the fluid that had built up in his abdomen, combined with his blood tests showed us that his liver was no longer functioning properly. Generally this diagnosis is not a very good one and the outlook for the patient not great, however, with medical support the liver does have some regenerative capacity and Tommy’s owner was keen to give him a chance. He was started on diuretics to remove the fluid that had built up around his internal organs and liver support supplements. Remarkably he improved quickly and through a lot of TLC and home cooking did

wonderfully well for a full 12 months. This was largely down to his owner’s care and his own will to survive, but is a fitting reminder that giving our animals a chance is always worthwhile as more often than not they surprise us!

We would also like to take this opportunity to make our readers aware that we are soon to be opening a new surgery in Caister-on-Sea. The idea is to provide a vets there for the local community as there is currently no other veterinary provision in Caister. We intend to replicate the friendly, caring, top-quality service that we currently provide at our main surgery and hope to be doing so by mid-April.

No Messing Campaign – Taking the Message To The Streets

A street stencilling and social media campaign to encourage dog owners to pick up after their dogs has helped to raise awareness of the issue and helped to reduce the amount of dog fouling in North Norfolk.

witnessed. Our communities know it’s difficult to get the right evidence to fine an irresponsible owner, but together we can make it less likely to happen in the first place.”

In the past four years reports of dog fouling has decreased by 27% since April 2012 to March 2016, with 182 reports in 2012/13 to 170 in 2013/14, 148 in 2014/15 and 133 in 2015/16.

Over the Christmas and New Year period North Norfolk District Council’s environmental services team were out and about stencilling no messing signs onto the Sheringham Promenade.

Looking at this information in calendar years it shows that reports of dog fouling does fluctuate – in 2016 there were 103 reports, in 2015 there were 121 reports and in 2014 85 reports. Over this period one fixed penalty notice has been successfully issued.

The stencilling campaign was run alongside a Christmas themed social media campaign that saw 13 tweets gain 14,106 twitter impressions and 15 Facebook posts reach more than 9,000 people with 472 Facebook clicks. The issue was debated on social media and the stencils were clearly visible on the Sheringham Promenade.

Over this time the council has taken part in national and local campaigns – including: ■ Taking part in the ‘Scooperhero’ campaign

Before the campaign monitoring was carried out along Sheringham Promenade – the area was visited 11 times between 29/11 to 16/12 and a total of 67 dog poos were recorded; after the stencils went down the area was visited 11 times between the 20/12 to 11/01 and 57 dog poos were recorded, a reduction of 15%.

Volunteer community dog wardens also support the education and engagement approach by going out and about patrolling neighbourhoods to remind dog owners of their responsibilities and help talk to pet owners about the need to always pick up after your dog.

■ Organised a competition with five schools designing poosters to put up in their neighbourhoods – the winning designs were then used on the sides of bin lorries.

North Norfolk District Council is part of the Norfolk wide Waste Enforcement Group and we work with colleagues across the county’s local authorities to share best practice and tackle issues effectively.

Our approach is to Educate, Engage and Enforce, and this approach is one that nationally is recognised as an effective way to change behaviour.

Offer valid until February 28th 2017

The Council has a zero-tolerance approach to environmental crimes and will issue fixed penalty notices where offences are witnessed with sufficient evidence to prosecute, should the offender fail to pay.

“North Norfolk is a great holiday destination for families and the vast majority of dog owners are aware of how important it is to pick up after their pets. Our focus is to educate those pet owners who don’t realise how important it is, to work with the community and ultimately to take enforcement action when an incident is

North Norfolk District Council has 16 volunteer community dog wardens who go out and about to educate dog owners and nine environmental protection officers trained to issue fixed penalty notices.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said: “We take this issue very seriously and we work with our communities to educate and engage people. We have had very positive feedback from the awareness-raising campaigns we have run on- and off-line, and residents do understand dog fouling is a very tricky problem that needs everyone to come together to solve.

Bradfield Cricket Building on Success

Bradfield Cricket Club have ambitious plans for their club house rebuild, as well as the upcoming cricket season at their beautiful ground near North Walsham. It also has big plans for more kids playing the game which needs the new changing facilities at the ground it has occupied since 1885. Plans went in this month for the rebuild which it is hoped will strengthen the club on and off the field.

North Norfolk District Council have provided the kickstart for the clubhouse project with a Big Society Grant, with the Club now in the midst of a major fundraising effort to reach the £75,000 required, and it hopes to start work before the new season begins.

And, whilst the new season for Champions Bradfield beckons on the pitch, the club are also looking to build relationships with local schools, with coaches available to help primary schools get cricket off the ground.

Club Chairmain, Pete Murphy said,”These are really exciting times for Bradfield Cricket. Whilst we won the league last year, we also think its

essential that we get more kids playing to sustain the club into the future. The extended Clubhouse will provide the extra changing rooms we need to do that, as well as allowing us better facilities for the Club in general. We are running kids cricket for all ages and, on the back of that, the Club can only go from strength to strength".

Next free introductory session for children in the North Walsham Sports Centre: Tuesday 4th April 6-9 year olds 1000 - 1130 10-11 year olds 1130 - 1300

Coltishall, Horning & Cantley, Neatishead, Rackheath, Salhouse, St John's (Hoveton) and Tunstead Schools entering. Over a hundred boys and girls took part.

March 19th will see the fortieth annual North Walsham Minis Festival, with Clubs across Norfolk and beyond participating.

The Vikings continued their good form winning 41 - 29 victory at resurgent Ruislip on 11 February, making it six wins from the last seven. They retained fourth place, five points behind third placed Chingford. Unbeaten Tring remain the runaway leaders, with Brentwood second.

The Vikings’ next home game is Eton Manor on 11 March, 3.00 pm kick off.
