AGEWISE 5 April 10am - 2pm

A FREE Event promoting Living Well and Maintaining Independence A FREE tea/coffee and cake per person FREE shuttle bus service from the Market Square, Aylsham

ACT (Aylsham and District Care Trust) is organising a free event at the ACT Centre in Aylsham for people in the Broadland and North Norfolk area. There will be at least forty organisations providing information, advice, support and care for older people in the community and their family and carers.

Stand holders attending will include Fire Safety, Home Safety, Legal Issues, Trusted Handyperson, Housing, Care Options, Respite Care, Claiming Benefits, Hearing, Eyesight, Diabetes, Fraud Avoidance/Advice, Food Bank, Foot Care, Counselling, Help with Shopping/Meals, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Support Groups, Befriending, Mobility Aids, Assistive devices and many more. People who use the many services that ACT provides regularly ask about the different options that might be available to them and to have this extensive range of information in one place would be very beneficial.

For those people who do not have easy access to the internet it can be challenging to find out what is available. This ‘one stop shop’ will hopefully provide lots of help and information.

This is the first event of its kind in the area.

You can find the ACT Centre on St. Michael’s Avenue, Aylsham, NR11 6YA

There is a cafe and free parking available on site.

Aylsham and District Care Trust (ACT) have been providing care and support to older and/or vulnerable people in the community, as well as their family and carers for over 30 years. We offer lunch clubs, social outings, coffee mornings, transport to health care appointments, counselling, pastoral care, Dementia care and support, shopping trips, befriending, day care, and other activities at our centre.

You can contact ACT on 01263 733385, www.aylshamcaretrust.co.uk, Twitter @care_trust Facebook : Aylsham and District Care Trust

Millfield Goes Global!

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham is one of the few schools in Norfolk recognised for being an International linked school.

Millfield received the Full International Award for Outstanding Development of the International dimension in the curriculum in 2015.

Earlier this month the children took part in an International Links Day. Years 5 and 6 were linked to a school in Japan and sent letters about their school life, so they could compare and ‘Manga’ drawings of themselves.

Year 6 pupils also made vibrant and inspired Koi kites to send them. Some pupils sampled typical food from the chosen school’s country, which was Spain and India as well as learning about their traditions and typical school life.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and are now eagerly awaiting a response. We have now linked with schools in India, Spain, Holland, South Korea and Japan.

Big Society Fund latest round agreed Big Society Fund approaches ÂŁ1.5m total grant funding awarded

A heritage group, disabled people, film fans and users of several village halls across North Norfolk will all benefit from the latest round of grants from the Big Society Fund, run by North Norfolk District Council.

Eleven grants totalling more than ÂŁ80,000 were made in the latest round agreed this month.

This means 183 BSF grants have been awarded totalling ÂŁ1,439,526.87 since the fund started in 2012. Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Panel, said “Later this month we will be celebrating a wide range of volunteers at the Big Society Awards Night at Sheringham Little Theatre.

“It is appropriate timing, shortly before we celebrate the efforts of those hard working volunteers, to announce the next tranche of help we are able to give to groups of people working in their communities to improve the lives of so many people. The Big Society Awards Night were held at Sheringham Little Theatre on 23 March to celebrate the Big Society community spirit that helps to make North Norfolk such a great place to live. The Big Society Grant Fund Panel met on 6 March

and agreed the following: • North Walsham Heritage Group (£3,100.80) to purchase exhibition display panels and lockable exhibition cases.

2 Main Courses for ÂŁ14.00! FREE coffee with this voucher Promotion dishes available Monday-Friday Terms and Conditions apply

• Potter Heigham Playing Field and Village Hall (£8,484) to re-roof the outside store/garage, repair doors and walls to safely integrate into the Pavilion, and interconnect two changing rooms to provide a secure and appropriate changing space. • Edgefield Village Hall (£2,392) to install audio visual equipment to allow the hall to hold film nights and specialist talks with presentations.

• All Saints Community Rooms in Mundesley (£6,825) to renovate toilets to become disabled accessible and provide baby change facilities. Also for repairs to the roof and repointing of brickwork damaged by storms in early 2016. • Langham Parish Room (£3,850) for the refurbishment of the male toilets.

• The Raynhams and Helhoughton Village Hall (£9,882) to refurbish toilets and kitchen.

In 2001, a local history evening attracted a full church and lots of interest. Since then further pictures have been added to our collection.

It is hoped that enough material can be amassed for a power-point presentation using the church’s new cinema screen, maybe in the autumn. If anyone has Thorpe Market connections and access to family pictures we would be thrilled to make contact. Nowadays there is no need to be separated from precious photographs, they can be copied in their owners’ homes.

Our photos are from Anthony Beck’s Green Farm archive and are just the sort of anecdotal village history that we are seeking. Of course Thorpe Market was a ‘Suffield’ village, with many people employed on the Gunton estate. Photographic material from that era, to add to that which we already hold, would be most welcome.

• Overstrand Parish Council (£6,700) to refurbish the parish hall kitchen; replacement of old kitchen units, worktops, sink, taps and water heater. • Felbeck Trust at Sustead (£3,576) to purchase tools, fencing and associated equipment to restore and improve the habitat of the combined Sustead Common and Surveyor's Allotment site. • Swanton Novers Parish Council (£7,000) to purchase two pieces of adult fitness equipment and associated costs.

• North Walsham Rifle and Pistol Club (£15,000) to go towards a larger project involving a Sport England grant to replace the aging clubhouse.

• Felmingham Village Hall (£14,000) to help

Thorpe Market Church Local History Project

refurbish the village hall to include a redesigned interior to incorporate a community meeting space with lounge and mini kitchen, to remove damp, replace boiler and improved insulation, replace existing patched roof and purchase a projector for film shows.

Sunday School, Coronation, WW2 all make fascinating stories to be shared. Please contact us if you can add to our knowledge, or point us to someone who can. info@thorpemarket.org.uk

North Walsham - Dilham Canal by David Revill David began his talk by asking us to consider life in this country 200 years ago, when freight was brought to our locality by small ships, off loading their cargo into horse drawn carts on the beach. Later carriage was made easier and cheaper when barges assisted by horsepower could proceed inland along rivers and artificial waterways.

In 1812, 50 local business people decided a canal was required to transport goods to the water mills located up as far as Antingham. They petitioned for an act of Parliament to build such a canal. On the 5/5/1812 the bill was signed by King George 111. £30,000 pounds was raised to construct the canal, which took 100 men one year to dig from the River Ant near Dilham to Antingham pounds, nearly 8¾ miles on length. In 1826 it was found that a second Parliamentary bill was required to ensure the canal would never be closed. The canal has six locks each of 50ft long 12½ft wide and 3ft deep, that raised the water level 58 feet over its length, which is lined with grey clay to make it watertight. It is crossed by eight bridges, most were sited adjacent to mills, at Antingham, Swafield, Bacton Wood, Ebridge and Honing. Spillways (an overflow system) were provided over five sections, allowing excess water to bypass the nearby lock and join the canal lower down, thus preventing unnecessary flooding. The length above Swafield double locks silted up and was closed in 1893, and abandoned in 1927.

Traders over the canal area found that the canal took business away from them. In 1811 a coal merchant, trading at Dilham Staithe was paid £1500 in compensation for loss of earnings. The canal only has a short length of ‘tow

Mr Collect commented, "This was an opportunity for me to experience driving in a Nissan Leal Electric car. On a fine spring like day I found the test drive route, scenic and interesting. I found the interior spacious and easy on the eye. The instrument panel is bright and clear to read."

"The controls were readily accessible and simple to operate. Overall excellent drive and remarkably quiet. The quiet ride in the comfort of the leaf made the journey very enjoyable and I was quiet surprised to find I am a greener drive than I thought!"

"Many thanks to Nissan and Crayford and Abbs for sponsoring and organising this event and you look forward to enjoying my prizing winning day at the 02 courtesy of Nissan."

Ham Hock Terrine

Our homemade ham hock terrine is an old favourite that regularly appears on the evening menus and is a traditional dish that is simple but satisfying. It is one of our head chef, Matt Staceys’, favourite starters as it is a classic rustic dish which is best served with just some crusty bread and some piccalilli. Matt has always said that some of the best dishes are the simplest. 3 x ham hocks 6x bay leaves 1x onion (chopped) 2 x carrots ( peeled) 6x whole garlic clove

6x black peppercorns 50g mixed herbs 20g x flat leaf parsley 20ml grain mustard vinaigrette

1. Take a large saucepan and fill with the ham hocks, bay leaves, onion, carrots, peppercorns and garlic. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Once the water is boiling reduce to a simmer and leave to cook all day for roughly 5 hours. 2. After about 5 hours, when the meat is falling off the bone, Strain the pan off in a colander. When the ham is cool enough to handle, pick out the ham and pick off the bone. 3. Place the cooked ham in a mixing bowl and add the parsley, herbs and vinaigrette. Mix this all together with your hands. Set aside a baking tin lined with cling film and put the ham hock mixture in and press down firmly with

At a very well attended AGM of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership, held at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, on 28 February, Ted Gadsden formally retired after 10 years as chair. Jonathan Jonathan Denby presents a Denby, head of corporate affairs at retirement gift to Ted Gadsden, Greater Anglia, and Ian Dinmore, out-going chair of the Bittern chair of Community Rail Norfolk, Line CRP were present to mark the occasion.

Jonathan thanked Mr Gadsden for “his constant and unwavering support for the Bittern Line CRP over the last decade.” The CRP was created in 1997 and over those 20 years passenger journeys have tripled. “This is down to the commitment of many people who have played their part, in the CRP and more widely. One of the key players in the last 10 years has been Ted. He’s been a tireless supporter and advocate for line.”

Ted was presented with a gift voucher by Mr Denby, on behalf of the Partnership, for him and his wife Sheila to enjoy a day out on one of NENTA’s excursion trains.

Mr Gadsden intends to continue his involvement as a “community railer” supporting the Bittern Line, as Vice President, and Community Rail Norfolk, the body which oversees this work on the lines from Norwich to Sheringham, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Ted is succeeded as chair of the BLP by Peter Mayne, who is active in community rail as a director of Community Rail Norfolk. In 2011 he was instrumental in the Bittern Line winning the prestigious “Passengers Matter" award made by the national rail body, ACORP. He retired in 2012 as principal of Paston Sixth Form College, although he continues to support improvement in schools nationally, doing so - you’ve guessed it - by rail as his preferred mode of travel.

Peter looks forward to an exciting period ahead for the Bittern Line, not least with the arrival of brand new trains in 2019/20. A fleet of state-of-the-art three and four carriage trains, no less!

North Norfolk Chorale to perform for Holy Week Novel Success for Paston Student Paston Sixth Form College student Jacob Alexander has just received news that a novel he wrote is going to be published.

During Holy Week the North Norfolk Chorale will sing excerpts from Handel’s Messiah at St Nicholas’s Church, North Walsham on Wednesday 12 April at 6.30pm. This will be an act of worship so there is no admission fee - a retiring collection will be held in aid of Church and Choir funds.

The book, “A Town Called Hope”, is currently available as an e-book on www.amazon.co.uk. The unique crime story is set in a fictional 1870s Mid West Town in the USA. The central character mysteriously wakes up in the town square of Hope Falls. With no name, or memory, the newcomer befriends the town’s grizzled Sheriff and a kindly Preacher. As he begins to look into his past, a chain of events begins.

Jonathan Dodd, Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “the Messiah is so popular it needs no introduction from me. We shall be performing a selection of movements that give a good flavour of the work. And of course it will include the Hallelujah Chorus! Do come – everyone is most welcome”.

The story has numerous twists and turns, leading to a shocking conclusion. It is an amazing first novel and a brilliant read for young and old. Jacob, an ex Broadland High School pupil, is a first year student at Paston studying History, Biology and Chemistry. Jacob is already working on a new novel that he hopes to publish.

Three Fluffy Friends

completely mesmerised by this viewing experience are now enjoying watching the three little ducklings become a part of their setting.

Three new additions joined Swanton Abbott Pre-School earlier this month after a delivery of duck eggs just over a month ago.

All that is left is for the children to name their new fluffy friends and to enjoy watching the ducklings grow!

The pre-school were lucky enough to have the opportunity to have use of an incubator to show the children first hand how ducks develop. Just over a week into the incubation period, the children 'candled' the eggs. This is a process where you hold a torch to the egg in a dark place and can see the developing duckling and blood vessels, a fascinating observation for both children and staff.

Beyond Words

On day 28 the pre-school welcomed their first duckling and a day later, his two brothers arrived. The children and staff,

There’s some would say … and I suppose they’re right, We speak a different language, you and I. So conversation must be heart to heart, Which seems to work for us, and we get by. Vocabulary? Yes, it’s somewhat small, And lacks finesse and other fancy stuff. But when I say ‘I love you, love you so’ And you respond with ‘woof’ … well that’s enough

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station looked back at 2016 with the awards and dinner dance held at Royal Hotel Mundesley on Saturday 4 March.

Eighty people attended the dinner dance. After the meal, the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2016 before the band ‘Don’t Ask’ took to the stage. The evening raised £353 through the Raffle and Auction for the RNLI.

Happisburgh Lifeboat was called, along with Cromer and Sheringham Lifeboats, Happisburgh Lifeboat being first on scene with Cubitt at the helm and they soon found seven of the divers and picked them up. He recalled how tight it was to get all seven divers and equipment onto the D Class Lifeboat. Cubitt coordinated the other lifeboats and helicopter and the other two divers were soon found and picked up by Sheringham Lifeboat before being taken to Sea Palling. He remembers the great feeling of successful team work. 2009 brought the arrival of the Atlantic 75 on a two year trial, which in 2010 was made permanent.

The unconscious, but breathing casualty was taken by Air Ambulance to Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The two casualties with ‘near drowning’ symptoms were taken by Ambulance to hospital. The other casualty was transferred to an Ambulance by Happisburgh D Class.

Family Disputes after death: Where there’s a Will

by Tammy Parnell, Partner and Contentious Probate and Trusts Solicitor is an associate Member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists ( ACTAPS)

Coping with the grief and bereavement of losing a loved one is one of life's biggest challenges. Going through this process after a family member or friend has died is never easy, but matters can become even more difficult and emotive if there is an issue or dispute with the Will or Estate.

850,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK, increasing numbers of elderly people are vulnerable to financial abuse.

Clapham & Collinge are holding a series of legal briefings throughout March and April to examine many of the issues surrounding Wills, Probate and the administration of estates, and how and by whom they can be challenged. The briefing will highlight several of the most common difficulties we encounter when acting for our clients, and what we have learned about in the legal and regular press, including:

You may feel unfairly treated by the contents of a loved one's will or feel the deceased has failed to make adequate financial provision for those left behind. Alternatively, you may have had doubts about the mental capacity of the person signing the will or feel they were pressured into signing it by someone else. Our modern, complex families are causing some issues too. For example, what if a person re-marries and leaves their estate to their new spouse and child from that relationship, but not the children from their first marriage? This can result in you wanting to contest a will (this process is also referred to as contested or contentious probate).

• An update on recent developments and the most newsworthy cases • Abuse of the elderly : common signs, how to identify them and what to do when they are spotted

Contentious probate is on the rise, with the number of Will disputes now at record levels. All too commonly, people find themselves embroiled in a family war over the contents of a loved one’s Will. Furthermore, with our growing elderly population and approximately

Blue

Our case this month is Blue, a three year old female cat.

She first presented to the surgery with a history of being under the weather for 2 days, hiding up and not eating with her normal gusto. She was unusually quiet for a cat of her age and was running a very high temperature.

We are fortunate enough to have facilities to run blood tests immediately in the practice and these demonstrated high white cell counts, but apparently normal organ function. Her abdomen was uncomfortable on palpation so following a period of time on intravenous fluids and antibiotics Blue

FreeAds

had an ultrasound examination of her abdomen. Most of her organs were normal in appearance, but her right kidney was enlarged by 25% and rather unusually there was a large amount of fluid in the capsule surrounding the kidney. Even more unusually, this fluid was sampled and found to be purulent, indicating an infection. She was started on appropriate antibiotic treatment and miraculously improved within 48 hours. Since then she has gone from strength to strength and when scanned again 2 weeks later the kidney had returned to its normal size and all the fluid had resolved. Cats are not always the easiest pets to medicate, so her response to treatment is a great credit to the dedication and perseverance of her owner and her own will to pull through.

We had another piece of good news this month at Westover Vets we have been re-accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. To pass this assessment a practice must demonstrate the highest standards in veterinary care, customer service, cleanliness, staff training and development and facilities and equipment, so we are very proud of our team for reaching and maintaining these standards. Currently we are the only practice accredited for Small Animals in North Walsham and for Large Animals and Equine in Norfolk!

Songbird Survival Supporter Mina

Songbird Survival funds research into the dramatic decline in songbird numbers. Supporter Eddie Bullimore blames the decline on modern farming methods including the use of chemicals, not leaving margins around fields and the severe cutting back of hedgerows with mechanical cutters, along with the rising number of predators.

Eddie and his friend Lynn Frarey are always grateful for the support given to them through donations of cash and items for their various fundraising table top sales by members of the public, but were particularly pleased recently to learn of a very young supporter. Six year old Mina Fawkes has been putting her pocket money into a Songbird Survival charity box in Cromer and Eddie is delighted about Mina’s interest in the songbirds and their future. Well done Mina!

Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Get Grubby

By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Grown-ups: when was the last time you got grubby? No, not just a bit smelly from sitting around watching an entire series on Netflix in your jammies all day, I’m talking about a sloppy mud, grass stained, pocket full of sand, twigs in your hair kind of filthy. When was the last time you actually let rain fall on your head? Walked outdoors barefoot? When did we decide that dirt was no longer entertaining?

too) I’ve picked up are the Small Adventures Journal by Keiko Brodeur and My Extra Messy Adventure Notebook by Nicole Daw and Hannah Jones McVey for the National Trust.

Now I double dare you to go outside and pick up some mud. If you really need a reason then you can do a texture test to determine the quality of your garden soil, but really I just want you to get it all mushy in your hands and fingernails and remember what it’s like to be mucky. I promise it won’t hurt and that you’ll be able to wash it away once you’re done. You can even bring out a bowl of water and towel for your hands as a figurative comfort blanket. To do a soil texture test, dig about 15cm below the surface then follow this RHS created flow diagram: (source: schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/Resources/

Whenever you find the time make sure that you fit in activities that have no purpose, no ulterior motive other than hilarity and joy. Speaking from experience, it will enrich the quality of your life. Quoting Yes Man; “The world’s a playground. You know that when you are a kid and then somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.”

If you haven’t a penchant for squishing mud, but are intrigued at trying other icky escapades, two delightful books (aimed at children, but stuffed with fab, free ideas suitable for adults

My name’s Beckie and I live a grubby life. And I’m all the better for it.

Some of my particular favourites are: - Walk barefoot on a mud safari - Target practice with mud and a spoon - Dissect an owl pellet - Give a tree a face - Disappear into the landscape – camouflage yourself and disappear - Create a wild assault course - Go on a puddle hunt - who can find the biggest splash? And even the less messy: - Make patterns with sand - Build a scarecrow - Stop and listen - Identify the clouds - Take a breath… take note of the natural smells around you, and - Make a time capsule

new cat in your area that fits this description, please contact us. We would love to get her back and can lend a trap to catch her if necessary as she is very nervous so may not let you approach her. Fortunately she is chipped so easy to identify if successfully caught. We have recently been helping with the neutering cats at a local business site in North Walsham, with invaluable help in the catching being done by a gentleman working there. To date, three of these young cats have been caught and neutered. The last two caught have now left the site and are enjoying life at local stables where they have shelter and regular meals provided by the owner. Before continuing to catch the cats, plans were made to provide shelter for those left at the site and this did hold up the catching for a time. With somewhere safe to place the cats when they return from the vets, neutering them will now continue. All the vets we use for this type of work are very helpful and will hold cats overnight if necessary.

In the meantime, we had a call from our friend at the site advising that he had seen a young kitten there. With no mother or litter mates around we advised him to catch it, if possible, and we would take it into care. Early the next morning, I received a call from our friend to let us know he had caught the kitten and, after advising Stephanie, I went to collect it and take it to Dilham. As soon as we looked at the kitten, we saw it had a problem as it had a large lump of poo stuck to his bottom and,

as he was long haired, this would be difficult to remove. With an appointment to take another cat to the vets that morning Stephanie rang to see if they could see him too. As they were holding a nurses clinic that morning, they were happy to oblige and this little lad was left there to receive professional care. Poor little lad, he was Daisy, the little cat returned later that day with a missing from the very sore ulcerated bottom, Queensway area in and was given Manuka North Walsham Honey and Vaseline to make him more comfortable and antibiotics to help his recovery. Irene, one of our fosterers, was happy to take him under her wing and, one week later, he returned to see his vet who not only gave him a clean bill of health but also, subject to a satisfactory blood test when he is vaccinated at 9 weeks old, will be giving him a new home. A happy ending for this little kitten we called ‘Manuka’. Our friend at the site has been keeping an eye out but no further kittens have been seen.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

North Walsham Table Tennis Second decisive cup win for NWSCD In the second round of the Handicap Doubles Cup Crosscourt’s Derek Sidaway, John Welsh and Rod Goffin hosted NWSCD’s Andrew Tuddenham, Stuart Hook and Philip Stone. The handicaps were close with Crosscourts always starting on 31, except for the pairing of Welsh and Goffin who started on 26 while NWSCD always started on either 27 or 28 points. A significant turning point came as Sidaway and Welsh were a point away from giving the hosts a 3-0 lead, but Tuddenham and Stone won the golden point to win 51-50. Welsh and Goffin took the next battle but two 51-48 wins saw NWSCD draw level at 3-3. Welsh and Goffin beat Tuddenham and Stone 51-41 to move Crosscourts 4-3 ahead. The eighth battle saw Sidaway and Welsh win five points from 42-47 to draw level, but Tuddenham and Hook won the next four to set up NWSCD’s second decisive match in this years competition. Stone and Hook (27) beat Sidaway and Welsh

(31) 51-42 to seal NWSCD’s 5-4 win and the team will host Gresham’s School A in the quarter-finals.

Two second round ties in the Handicap Singles Cup took place at North Walsham Sports Centre as NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Andy Beane and Werner Zivna hosted Gresham’s School A’s Jonas Lee, Haken Bennell and Robin Thaxter. Beane’s booming forehands picked up a single against Bennell but the control of Thaxter and speed of Lee helped the visitors to a 5-1 win. On the adjoining table, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott and the Richard’s Westgate and Porritt hosted NWSCC’s Joel Lodge, Carrie Last and Stuart Hook. NWSCC led 2-1 but NWSCB soon found their rhythm with Westgate’s (16) 51-50 win against Hook (27) completing their 5-2 win. In the First Division, Dropshot’s Alf Greer, Wren Thatcher and Anne Armitage hosted NWSCE’s

Two close games for the Vikings

Ben Lester, Andrew Weston and James Lester. Thatcher beat Weston in five as did Greer in straight with the NWSCE player picking up a single against Armitage in four. The Lesters both took maximums with Ben taken the distance by Geer and a five set doubles concluded an 8-2 win for the visitors. NWSCE also beat LCC Crabs 7-3. In the Second Division, LCC Starfish’s Chris Taylor, Nigel Pegg and Neil Edwards hosted NWSCF’s Frank Weston, John Chapman and Edna Stone. Taylor took a brace with wins in four and five against Chapman and Stone respectively. Braces from Stone and Chapman – who beat Edwards in five after being two up – and a maximum from Weston helped NWSCF to an 8-2 win. Finally in the Premier Division NWSCA beat Backhanders 6-4 with John Vaughan winning a vital last singles from two down against Whil De Neve.

North Walsham Bowls and Snooker Club

At second placed Brentwood they looked well placed at 25 - 5 with 30 minutes left to win but the home side, playing down a steep slope, won 31 - 25.

North Walsham Bowls and Snooker Club will be holding Open Evenings in April on the first four Fridays, from 7.30pm.

The home match against Eton Manor, who are fifth, followed a similar pattern: the hosts were 20 - 0 up after the first quarter but thereafter were mainly on the defensive before winning 23 - 18. With four games left they remain fourth.

Please come and see the inside of our Club, have a drink and a chat and find out if the Club has any benefits for you.

Head of Rugby James Brooks (pictured), assisted by several first team players, is running a Rugby Camp for 6 -17 year olds from 11 - 13 April. Open to the Club's Youth and Minis and anyone not registered elsewhere - details are on the Club website.

We have two full size snooker tables, a pool table, dart board and our very special bowling green.

Skipper Ryan Oakes was February's Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month. Since returning from injury the 24 year old has led them to six wins from eight. "Ryan is a very consistent performer who works tirelessly in attack and defence," commented James Brooks. "Still young in terms of captaincy, he is a great leader and brings out the best in the guys around him."

This club is membership only - to join and have access to the Clubhouse facilities costs £35 a year. On joining an extra £5 is charged for your door entry swipe card. For further details please telephone 01692 500710 or e-mail widgetwilk@gmail.com

Ryan began at Scottow in the Under 13s and has played there ever since apart from three years at University. Equally adept in the second row, at flanker or number 8, he is also a major contributor in the lineout. "North Walsham is a brilliant club to play for," he said.

The Vikings next home game is against Thurrock on 1 April.
