Volunteers Needed for Community Speed Watch Team in North Walsham
Volunteers are needed to help tackle the common complaint of speeding in North Walsham.
Speeding along New Road in North Walsham was adopted as priority following Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) meeting in March.
Community Speed Watch was launched in 2007 and is a project working across Norfolk empowering communities to play an active part alongside the Police and the Safety Camera Partnership in tackling the problem of speeding in their neighbourhoods. A team of volunteers (minimum of 6) are issued with a speed radar gun, Community Speed Watch signs and reflective jackets. Volunteers are given full training and site risk assessments are completed by the police.

Volunteers Needed for Community Speed Watch Team in North Walsham
Continued from front cover... Speed checks are carried out in 30 and 40mph limits, the volunteers record details of offending vehicles and these are sent to the Safety Camera Partnership team. A warning letter is sent to the registered keeper of offending vehicles and persistent offenders are visited by police.
Community Engagement Officer, PC Pete Davison said “Community Speed Watch is there to promote road safety, we would rather educate drivers than prosecute them. We have successful schemes set up in many towns and villages across North Norfolk, it really does reduce speeding and I feel that North Walsham would see real benefits from having a Community Speed Watch team. For those people who complain about speeding I would say please think about Community Speed Watch”.
If you would like to get involved or find out more please contact PC Pete Davison at North Walsham Police Station by dialling 101.
North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
Thursday 4 May was our Annual Spring Dinner at the Goat Inn Skeyton. We had a beautiful meal with a choice of beef or turkey and all the trimmings. The dessert was a choice of raspberry pavlova or apple crumble with tea or coffee to finish. We would like to thank all the staff at the Inn who helped with serving the meals and to the Chef who cooked it. This is the second year that we have had our annual meal at the Inn and it has been a pleasure both times.
The April meeting was held at the Community Centre on Thursday 6 April and we were entertained by The Squeegees, a singing duo who sang a medley of songs from the 50s 60s & 70s. This duo has been coming for quite some time now and it is always a pleasure to welcome them every time.
Thursday 2 March was our AGM and the committee was voted back. The Chairperson gave a wonderful speech and thanked everyone on the committee for the time they give to make this a successful Club.
Our fundraising to date from raffles and the second hand clothing stall is £70.
We are sure that all members would like to wish George, a long standing member of the Club, a very speedy recovery after suffering a stroke - we wish you well George and hope to see you back soon for your 100th birthday, which won't be long now.
The Club opens its doors at the Community Centre in North Walsham on the 1st Thursday of every month at 2pm.
SHAVE OR WAX?
Earlier this month, Town Clerk Nick Clancy and Deputy Town Mayor Sallie Stuckie went to unusual lengths to promote awareness and raise funds for this year’s Funday.
Nick winced his way through a full leg and back waxing in the Market Place and Sally bared
Nick Clancy receiving his waxing her head to the elements with a full head shave in JJ'S hairdressers.
The elements were not in their favour either! It was a cold day with a chilly wind! The brave duo!
Well done Nick and Sallie!

Haddock Benedict
This month's recipe is provided by Joe Stacey, demi-chef de partie at the Dales. It includes a bonus recipe for English Muffin. Try it and see what you think! Ingredients 1 block of butter 4 egg yolk 1tsp white wine vinegar 2 haddock fillets
Handful of spinach 2x eggs 1x half of savoury muffin
Method To make your hollandaise 1. Firstly melt the block of butter so the butter and milk separate and pour of the butter. This clarifies the butter. 2. Secondly prepare a bain marie of hot water. Take 4 eggs and separate the yolks and put into a mixing bowl. 3. Add a tsp of white wine vinegar to the yolks and mix together. Then place the bowl above the bain marie. 4. Next is the tricky and very important part. Very slowly and gently pour the butter into the yolk and vinegar ixture and mix vigorously until it starts to form a creamy consistency. Lastly, season to taste. 5. This is now ready to serve. Prepare this before
starting the rest of the dish.
1. Prepare a shallow pan of milk. This is to poach your haddock fillet. Bring this to a simmer. 2. Next, boil a pan of water to poach your eggs. When the milk is simmering place the haddock in the milk to poach. 3. When the haddock is nearly cooked, Bring the pan of water to a simmer and crack your eggs in to poach. While the eggs and fish are cooking, pre- heat a frying pan. 4. When the pan is hot, place a knob of butter in the pan and wilt the spinach with a little bit of seasoning. When the spinach is wilted, place onto a doubled up sheet of kitchen towel to drain excess oil. 5. Remove the eggs and the haddock from both the water and milk when cooked and also place on doubled up kitchen towel to drain excess liquid. 6. To plate, place half of one of your homemade muffins on a plate then top with your wilted spinach. On top of this place the poached haddock then the poached eggs on top. Finish with a generous helping of hollandaise over the top of the dish. Alternately to homemade muffins, you can buy English muffins and just toast before serving.
English Muffin
Ingredients (Makes 8) 150g strong white bread flour plus extra for flouring 6g fast-action yeast 6g salt 15g caster sugar 15g softened butter, cut into small pieces 1 medium free-range egg lightly beaten 170ml oz milk Oil for greasing 15g semolina or polenta, extra for dusting
Method 01263 824555 1. Firstly tip the flour into a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on one side of the flour and 01263 838383 the salt into the other side of the flour. Add the sugar, butter, egg and milk, then mix all the 01263 579579 ingredients together to form a soft dough. 2. Next move the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and then knead for 10 minutes or until soft and stretchy. 3. Now lightly grease a large with your oil and the place the dough in the bow. Cover this and leave to prove for an hour or until the dough has doubled in size. 4. Dust your work surface with a mixture of semolina/ polenta and flour. 5. Tip the dough onto the work surface and roll till it is roughly 2.5cm thick. 6. Lightly dust two baking trays with half of the semolina or polenta. 7. Using a 9cm/ 3 ½ oz straight sided cutter, cut out eight muffin. Place four muffins, evenly spaced apart on each of the dusted baking trays. Dust the remaining semolina or polenta over the top of the muffins. 8. Leave to prove for another 30 minutes. 9. Preheat the hot plate or a heavy-based frying pan on the hob to a very low heat. Griddle the muffins for approximately 5-6 minutes, then flip over and griddle for another 5-6 minutes on the other side. This is a staple on our breakfast menus which is a luxurious way to start the day. Also a lovely alternative to have at dinner time.

Thrills and Spills return to Cromer
Soapbox Derby Sunday 6 August
The third running of what is now becoming one of the dates in the North Norfolk ‘fun events’ sports calendar is set to bring another round of thrills and spills to the streets of Cromer on Sunday 6 August.
The event is already attracting interest with budding soapbox racers drawing up plans for their carts. The entry form and regulations are freely available from The Cottage in Cromer or from the Cromer Carnival website.
This year’s event has a new sponsor, The Westerleigh Group, who operate the newly opened Cromer Crematorium. Commenting on the sponsorship, Crematorium manager Sam Dellbridge said “We are delighted to support Cromer Carnival and wish everyone a fun packed week of entertainment."
Tony Shipp, Chairman of Cromer Carnival said “I am delighted to have the support of The Westerleigh Group as a new sponsor to
Cromer Carnival”.
Commenting on this year’s Soapbox Derby he said “We are excited about the way this year’s event is shaping up. We have retained last year’s higher jump and will be extending the landing ramp so that the carts that fly from the top of the ramp have a better chance of hitting the landing area, thus giving an even fast, and of course smother, landing.”
He continued “The start ramp is the same as last year with the usual tight chicane to allow the drivers to show their skills on the way to
North Walsham Times 519 May 20th 2017
the finish line.” Scrutineering for the event opens at 11.30am, with the first cart away at 2pm all entries will be given at least two runs so that they can try to improve their time and have a chance of lifting the Malcolm McGreadie Cup for the fastest driver.
There are also prizes for fastest cart in each of the three classes and a Concourse de Elegance competition with a certificate for the best soapbox in each class.
The three classes are two junior classes 10 – 15 years and 16 - 18 years with an adult class for those aged 19 and over. More than one driver can use the same cart as long as it passes scrutineering and all drivers who are racing have a fitting crash hat. The closing date for entries is 29 July, although subject to the number of entries on the day, late entries may be accepted.
So, if you want the thrill of racing in front of an audience of hundreds, and to be crowned fastest driver down the hill, pick up an entry form and start building. 9

Spines set to tingle this summer
A heady cocktail of spine-chilling premier, comedy, thriller and elegant wit will being served up during Sheringham Little Theatre’s summer drama season. The five-show programme, opening on 21 July and running until 13 September is aimed to amuse, bemuse and thrill. Sheringham remains one of a handful of remaining outposts of professional summer ‘repertory’ theatre, where cast members learn a range of different roles. This summer sees a mix ranging from bed-hopping farce to the wit of Noel Coward. But it also includes a premier of a play within a play ghost story - The Revival (Scared to Death) penned by James Cawood, whose drama Stone Cold Murder featured in last summer's summer programme. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “James was pleased with the way we produced it and sent us the new script to try. He will be involved with rehearsals - making it the first time we have had a playwright involved with a premier here. "This new play crosses and confuses the genres, which makes it fun to work with," she added. The theatre is proud of its ‘rep’ tradition stretching back 57 years and always tries to stage a mixture of popular comedy, thrillers and newer works. For more details and tickets call the box office on 01263 822347, or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com
Summer drama season
21 – 29 July - Intimate Exchanges (Events on a Hotel Terrace) - A bittersweet comedy by Alan Ayckbourn following Celia and Toby’s first holiday for years in a dead-end seaside resort – where Celia’s admirer Lionel is a waiter. Toby has had a heart tremor. Lionel is a hopeless incompetent. Celia is reduced tears and hiccups. 1 – 9 August - The Business of Murder - Two people meet to discuss a play script. Humourless host Stone and television playwright Dee. Then Supt Hallett, the man she is having an affair with, turns up for a different reason. The psychological thriller plot twists and turns as they share the business of murder. 11 – 22 August - The Revival (Scared to Death) - A spine-chilling premier. The cast of a ghost play are gathered for a final rehearsal – but things are not going well, with actors bickering and unable to learn lines, then the spooky plot of the play starts to become real and the cast find themselves amid supernatural drama that is not fiction. 24 August – 5 September - Bedfull of Foreigners - Stanley and Brenda Parker’s French

holiday descends into chaos. Stanley lowers an attractive naked girl from his room window. Her husband turns up – and the husband’s girlfriend. Everybody is in the wrong bed, and people are dressed as nuns and fish in a fast-paced farce. 7 – 13 September - Noel and Gertie - A comedy with music which traces the friendship of stage legends Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, whose joint performances included Private Lives. The show devised by Sheridan Morley captures his wit, their relationship and portrays the style and elegance of the era. Aylsham Open Gardens
There is always a fascination in visiting gardens hidden behind houses both large and small.
Aylsham will be offering the opportunity to look behind huge old houses, cottages, and modern homes to discover a fascinating array of design, colour and plantings.
On Saturday 3 June and Sunday 4 June you’ll be able to buy tickets from 11am – 4pm from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. A day ticket will cost £5 or a two day ticket for £8. There will be more than 15 gardens to visit. Most of them are opening for the first time, but there will be a few favourites to revisit, too.
Whatever your preference, there will be something to interest you. Take a look at

What to do when life gets boring By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners I’ve had plenty of hobbies in the past and, like so many people, have lost interest in pursuing them, be it because I got frustrated practicing it over and over, found something else that I was more engrossed in, or even that I was worried about what other people would think of my hobby. Was it cool? Did I look silly doing it? Were other people going to treat me differently because of it? We’re all guilty of disparaging somebody’s hobby because we think it’s weird or the person isn’t cool enough to do it. Just look at TV shows like The Big Bang Theory, whose comedy consistently depends on the idea that people who are passionate about science, trains or comic books aren’t to be taken seriously (thankfully their fantastic script and characters also helps us see otherwise).
Maintaining a fervour for learning is a truly difficult thing. Not only must you try to ignore those who make fun of you, but you need to feel like you are smart enough to learn in the first place when you might have previously been made to feel otherwise. Nobody has a set ‘level’ of intelligence, despite how we may have been made to feel in education when we were separated into our bands of the ‘bottom set’ or the ‘smart class’ - yuck! Also, not everybody has to learn at the same speed, or be good at the same things. You don’t even have to be good at something to want to learn it! I think that we should make a pact with ourselves to try and stop putting down other people who get

excited over their interests. Sure, the girl wearing a Justin Bieber t-shirt eagerly trying to win tickets to his show might seem like she should care about ‘more important’ things, or the people who race around on tiny BMX bikes might look like they’re trouble makers to you, but are they actually doing you any harm? Do you need to make them feel like their obsession isn’t worthwhile, who does that actually benefit? And if you witness anybody else doing it, genuinely ask them why they feel such a prejudice against it? We all have misconceptions, and not only is it okay to be wrong sometimes, but learning more can open up a whole lot of compassion and intrigue for something you might never have considered before. Now if you don’t think you have any interests at all, or if you have an interest but it seems like there’s too much of a barrier to pursuing it, my advice is short and simple. Get curious. Anything can be remarkable when you continually question it. I find myself trying to identify lichens growing on walls in the middle of town, or marvelling at ferns that have established themselves underneath a leaking drainpipe. It can make trips a bit slower when I stop to look at things all the time, and I recently discovered the endearing term ‘walking at the speed of botany’, but it keeps me caring about what’s around me.
My questions drive my articles and learning. I’ve researched the methods Wiccans and Pagans use plants in magic, the reasoning behind botanical names, how to make gardening more accessible to the disabled and elderly, and how plants can survive
underwater. I have quickly accumulated a plethora of books, with my wish-list ever expanding into the realms of: Paleobotany - Fossil plants Psychoactive plants - Plants that alter brain function Forensic Botany - The use of plants in criminal investigations Women in Horticulture – What have been/are their barriers? What are their successes? Marine Botany - Plants and algae that live in the sea Plant Consciousness - Are plants intelligent? Can they remember? Feel pain? Communicate? React to change? I’m just inescapably captivated by the broad and fascinating industry of horticulture.
The best method I’ve found to figure out if you’re interested in a subject is to seek out people who absolutely love it. They will be able to tell you loud and clear all of the reasons why their subject is so great and then you can decide for yourself. And even better, you don’t have to limit yourself to just one subject, ask around! A hobby or interest can quickly sweep you into a career path if you let it. Some people were quick to tell me that gardening was ‘just a hobby’ when I considered studying it, and for a while I believed them, but you’re going to be much better at a job, and live a much more fulfilling life, when you’re driven by curiosity. I’m plenty aware that horticulture is often not regarded as interesting or skilled, and I know there are countless people that could help convince you otherwise, myself included! So go on, give curiosity a try.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust
June Open Days
An important but little-known part of Norfolk’s heritage will take centre stage during a weekend aimed at encouraging people to enjoy a restored attraction.
Everyone is invited to Ebridge Mill Pond (NR28 9NG for satnav users), part of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal, on Saturday June 3 (11am-5pm) and Sunday June 4 (10am-4pm) to take part in a range of activities and to find out more about successful restoration work on the waterway.
Organisers, the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust, also hope visitors will sign a petition supporting future improvement work on the Canal.
Open days highlights will include : • Model boats in action on the pond • Walks beside the restored Canal from the mill pond to Swafield Bridge • Photos and information on restoration work and the huge variety of wildlife recorded on the Canal • Displays of objects found during restoration work, including coins, bottles and clay pipes • Vintage tractors
• Continuous showing of new DVDs which will be on sale, together with other Canal merchandise • Chance to peruse the Canal Trust’s archives • Refreshments The waterway, nearly nine miles long, is Norfolk’s only sailing canal with locks and was opened in 1826. It runs from Antingham, north west of North Walsham, to Wayford Bridge, north west of Stalham.
completely dry and its infrastructure of locks and bridges was crumbling by 2001 when volunteers from the East Anglian Waterways Association (EAWA) launched what have become regular working parties to rescue the Canal.
Wherries would sail its length transporting cargo to and from the mills and communities along its route.
Ivan Cane, interim Chairman of the Canal Trust, said “The restoration of a canal is not just for boaters. A restored canal corridor, as seen on the Ebridge reach, becomes a community asset, and a tourist attraction. The permissive paths, running alongside this stretch of water, are giving people the chance to relax, walk, picnic, pond dip, watch wildlife, fish or gongoozle at the passing canoeists or sail boats. Here, at Ebridge, Norfolk’s industrial archaeological gem is coming back to life, and open to all to enjoy.

The EAWA’s success led to the formation of the Canal Trust in 2008. Work carried out by supporters means that a two-and-a-half mile stretch of the Canal, from Ebridge Mill Pond to Swafield Bridge, is in use once more and it is proving popular for activities including walking, cycling, canoeing, sailing, fishing, and bird watching.
Laurie Ashton, whose Old Canal Company owns the section, has almost finished restoring the lock at his Bacton Wood Mill and the Environment Agency has given the go-ahead for a dry section of the Canal above the lock to be re-watered for a trial period later this year.
The work of Mr Ashton and volunteers earned the Trust a national award last year.
A copy of a petition supporting continued restoration of the Canal, already signed by more than 3,000 people, will be available at the open days.

Losing the plot with murder in a small town:
new theatre group launch their first show
A new theatre group for adults, called North Walsham People’s Theatre, will perform their first show on 20 May.
Titled ‘A Small Town For Murder’, the play has been written by the show’s director, Joseph Ballard, who had started up the group under the umbrella of New Stages, which also runs North Norfolk Youth Theatre and North Walsham People’s Choir. The performance is based on a live broadcast of a radio play in front of an audience, which tells the twisted tale of a series of murders, based on the gossip and hearsay of a small market town.
effects which are made in the old-fashioned way, we hope the audience will have as much fun as we’ve had making it!”
Joseph Ballard, the show’s director, said “The adult acting group is the new addition to the range of classes I’m leading here in North Walsham. We’re all looking forward to the first show, which is in the style of a radio play of the bygone era. For audience members who would like to make the most of an evening out, we’ve organised a fish and chip supper for before the show.
The actors, their microphones and live soundeffects will all be visible as the assembled actors get to grips with their characters – until things go wrong and they try and keep up with the plot!

We have supported him in characters in the play, said “We have had so many laughs during the past and will continue to do so by providing a town centre ticket rehearsals – parts of the script are very funny and along with the sound office where people can get their tickets here in person.”

The girls’ football team won the Norfolk Open Tournament with a plethora of amazing goals, ‘edge of your seat’ saves and fantastic teamwork.
On Saturday 20 May, the show begins at 7.30pm and takes place at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall on Park Lane in North Walsham. There’s also the optional addition of a fish and chipper supper before the show at 6.30pm. Tickets are priced £5 (show only) or £10 (which includes a fish and chip supper). Tickets must be booked in advance and are available in person from The Showcase Gallery in the Market Place or by calling the box office on 01692 404533 or online at www.new-stages.co.uk.
Tanisha Grayling and Isla Harrison both scored five goals each, along with the tenacious skills of Helen Maidment, and Grace Walker, Lily-Ella Hunt and Holly Browne displaying their penalty skills.
Robyn Burgess saved seven of the goals, which included the nail biting sudden death penalty shoot-out, which won them the trophy.
The matches were fierce and talent shone through with all the schools that competed.

The girls were extremely proud of their achievement and the school celebrated with them during a special assembly.

UNIVERSITY DEGREE SUCCESS FOR EX PASTON SIXTH FORM COLLEGE STUDENTS
Paston Sixth Form College is always very keen to keep up to date with the success of their students when they leave for University, employment or apprenticeships.
Data produced by the Sixth Form Colleges Association showed that ex Paston students who went on to university achieved some amazing results in 2016.
In total, 86% of ex students from Paston achieved a First or Upper Second Class (2:1) Degree. The figure for Paston Sixth Form College was significantly above other Sixth Form Colleges at 76% and 73% from School Sixth Forms. Paston students even out-scored students from the Independent sector who achieved 79%. Additional data linked to students from the lowest University participation wards showed 90% of Paston students achieved a Higher Degree or Upper Second Class Degree compared to 72% from other Sixth Forms and 69% from School Sixth Forms and 76% from the Independent sector.
The Principal, Kevin Grieve, said he was very impressed by the brilliant performance of ex-Paston students. “It clearly shows staff at Paston prepare our students well for future academic success”.

with a year abroad at the University of Copenhagen. He has just completed a PGCE History Secondary Teacher Training at the Institute of Education, University College, London, starting a history teaching post in June in London. He said “my time at Paston Sixth Form College helped prepare me for university through expanding my perspective on the world. This was done by highly engaging teachers who really pushed me to the limit and beyond. As well as this the Wednesday afternoon enrichment allowed me to volunteer at a local high school which helped me secure a place on a teacher training course at the Institute of Education”.
I went on to study Architecture at Norwich University of the Arts which the College has close links with. I achieved a First Class Degree there last June. At Paston Sixth Form College, I was encouraged to be independent and to be responsible for my own learning and time management which I believe is an important skill needed at both University and in working life.”
James Appleby, a former A Level student at the College, went on to Norwich University of the Arts to do a BA in Architecture. He is shortly taking up a post as an Architectural Assistant (Part 1) in Norwich. He said “I really enjoyed my time at Paston Sixth Form College. CITY OF NORWICH PIPE BAND TO JOIN IN THE FUN AT THIS SUMMER’S GREAT BRITISH PROM The great British Prom is returning to Blickling on 12 August and, as well as showcasing the likes of the National Symphony Orchestra, Brit award-winning Only Men Aloud and Soprano Annette Wardell, some of the performers will be coming from much closer to home.
The Norwich Pipe Band will be joining the great British musical tribute, bringing a special sense of tradition and uniqueness to the Scottish pieces, before walking up the centre of the crowd to mark the end of what will be a truly memorable first half.
The pipe band, comprising 8-10 pipers and around seven drummers, with ages ranging from 20s to over 70, will be performing in the first half of the concert which focuses on great British anthems from around the home nations and the Scottish part will include ‘Flower of Scotland’ and other Scottish favourites.
Procession in Norwich.
Although amateurs, several members have previous military experience and others have learned to play with the band. All are well used to the big occasions that provide opportunities to demonstrate the truly stirring sounds of the pipes and drums, which band members pride themselves on achieving. Several members of the band have played with a symphony orchestra in Norwich before at the annual New Year’s Day Concert and the full band has played alongside many military bands including The Coldstream Guards, the Royal Irish Regiment, The Pipes and Drums of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the Band of the Parachute Regiment. A few have also taken part in the Edinburgh Tattoo with other pipe
After featuring in the traditional round of New Year and Burns Night celebrations, the band began preparing for what turned out to be a highly successful three date tour of southern Germany taking part in musical displays in 5000 seat indoor arenas alongside military bands from Ukraine, Moldova, Germany and the Netherlands. Part of the preparations saw the band record its first CD, sales of which also added to the success of the tour. The Band is also honoured to be invited to play during the moving sunset ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres, in September later this year.
Local engagements are also keeping the band occupied with Armed Forces Day in Lowestoft and Wymondham, the Sandringham Flower Show and the ever-popular Lord Mayor’s
It is going to be a special evening, with stirring sounds to ensure another classically British outdoor concert experience is enjoyed by all. The second half will see a fabulous rendition of all the Proms favourites including ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Land of Hope & Glory’ and British anthem ‘Jerusalem’ before the fireworks spectacular over the lake.
Car parking is free and there will be food and drink available on site (including a hog roast and Carluccio’s hampers which can be ordered in advance). For more details on the events, visit www.greatbritishprom.co.uk or call 01630 674342. Tickets are £35 in advance (£38 on the night).

Pipe Sergeant John Welton MBE said “The City of Norwich Pipe Band is proud to be playing its part in the prestigious proms at Blickling Hall and contributing to what is sure to be a superb evening’s rousing entertainment. Playing alongside a full symphony orchestra, conducted by Anthony Inglis, who has featured in more concerts at the Royal Albert Hall than any other living conductor, a well-known choir and vocal soloist is the sort of challenge that band members relish. Blending the sounds of the pipes and drums with other instruments and voices is a way of showing the surprising range of our instruments and their players.” 2017 is proving to be a very busy and interesting season for the City of Norwich Pipe Band, which was formed in 1979.

Focus on Conveyancing - What should you consider when buying your own home?
Questions and answers compiled by Rosemary Farman, Solicitor and Head of Residential Property, and Gaynor Hay, Property Solicitor. According to an article by BBC News published in January 2017, last year was estimated to have seen the highest number of first time buyers since 2007.
Clapham & Collinge property experts understand the difficulties that can come with buying a property, particularly for first time buyers who are new to the process so we have put together five things that a first-time buyer should consider when purchasing their first home: Rosemary Farman
1. Should I buy Freehold or Leasehold property? Owning the freehold of a property means owning the property itself and the land it stands on outright. You own the title absolutely and are known as the 'freeholder'. Freehold is usually the preferred and more straightforward option. Owning a leasehold interest in a property means having a right of occupation for a certain period of time in return for paying a rent. These could be for a relatively short period of time, perhaps 10-20 years, and charge a regular monthly or quarterly rent. Alternatively, they could also be long term lease, often 90-100 years, and are bought for a lump sum, called a premium. 2. What to look for when inspecting a property and when to have a survey carried out? The seller has very limited duties to disclose matters regarding the property to you, and you should therefore always carry out a number of checks to find out as much about the property as you can. You can then make a fully informed decision as to whether to proceed and purchase the property. 3. Funding the purchase. What is involved? If you chose to take out a mortgage, your solicitor will report to you on the mortgage offer and will also act for the mortgage company during the transaction. Such loans are very likely to be secured against the property itself and the lender may have certain rights to enforce any default in payment, including applying for the property to be sold.
4. Why does my solicitor need to investigate the Title? It is important that your Gaynor Hay solicitor investigates the property title. This will reveal any covenants or restrictions to which the property is subject. For example, any rights of way or charges or restrictions that you would want the seller to remove prior to completion. Finally, any covenants that you as the owner would be subject to in relation to the use or development of the property. 5. Why should I instruct my solicitor to carry out conveyancing searches? Searches are used to identify additional information about a property that would not otherwise be known. A local search, for example, may ighlight planning permission issues or whether there are conservation areas, railway tracks or roadworks in the proximity of the property that may affect the quality of life in your new home. An environmental search will reveal, among other things, potential issues with subsidence or contaminated land.
For more details on any property related issues, please contact Clapham & Collinge Property Solicitors at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham office on 01263 823398.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The weather could hardly be described as ‘spring like’ for the Spring Sale on 6 May, although we did raise £650.35 for the cats in care. We would like to thank our volunteers for giving their time to help on the day, and our supporters who ventured out on such a horrible day. A special thank you to Andrea, Bren and Jennie who had been very busy prior to the sale making cakes, jams and all the lovely craft items. Their stalls would have been quite bare without their contributions.
How quickly situations do change. Recently, we actually had an empty pen and no waiting list of cats to come in. This most enviable situation arose because several of the cats went to new homes within a very short period of time. However, we are now back to our normal state, with all pens full and a waiting list that continues to grow each day.
Nutsey, one of the cats at present still with us, came in because his owner had died and he had been abandoned. This poor little lad had very sore eyes and was constantly rubbing them, which only made the situation worse. Initial treatment involved eye drops and steroids but unfortunately they did not improve, in fact the eyelids became more swollen, which resulted in his eyelashes irritating his eyes. David, his vet, decided that an operation was needed to resolve the situation, so off to the vets once more Nutsey went. Initially, he continued to rub the eyes and further medication was needed. However, once Stephanie saw that some of the dissolvable stitches were still in place, David removed these and his eyes are now looking much better. He is still on medication and
we are hoping that he will get a clean bill of health when he goes for his next appointment.
Two of the sites where cats are being caught and neutered are now down to the last few cats, which will make life a lot better for them as there will be no additional mouths looking for a meal, but also allows females to enjoy life without maternal responsibilities. We have also been able to help with another site where Nutsey, when he first someone ‘inherited’ 15 (a later count brought arrived in care the total to 20) unneutered cats. Apart from one, which has gone missing, all have now been neutered. As 13 of these cats were female, if they had all produced a litter of four kittens (which is an average number), the lady could have had an extra 52 mouths to feed before the end of the summer, by which time the adults could have been pregnant again!
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
As the weather warms up we see more and more itchy dogs walk through the doors of the practice
Some of our patients are suffering from skin parasites, commonly fleas, so it is important to rule these out first.
If your pet is treated properly for parasites and is repeatedly itchy there is a fair chance that they are suffering from allergic skin disease, although a number of tests are required to definitively make the diagnosis.
Atopy is one of the most common types of allergy in dogs, estimated to affect up to 15% dogs. It is hereditary and can lead to allergies against the pollen of some plants (eg grasses, weeds, trees), fungi or various dust and storage mites. Certain breeds appear to be at higher than average risk such as the Lhasa Apso, Schnauzer, Boxer, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Poodle, West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier and Jack Russell Terriers.
and suppressing the itchiness, but we do now have another option, which can reduce the allergy itself, rather than just leaving us treating the symptoms. This treatment is called “immunotherapy” and involves making specific vaccines for each individual to desensitise them to the allergens they test positive for. It is proven to reduce clinical signs in 75% of dogs and is proving to be a great help in many of our patients. It is, however, most useful when used early in the course of the disease, so if you Grooming Parlour think your pet may have a skin allergy then it would be best Full Grooming & to book them in with Hydrobathing your vet to discuss Kerstin Available things further.
Debonair Dogs
Toby Morrell MRCVS Westover Veterinary Centre The initial symptoms usually appear before three years of age and include frequent licking or biting of the paws and the rubbing of the head along the floor or other objects. Recurrent ear infections can also be caused by atopy (in over 75% of the cases). Sneezing, a discolouration of the fur (from licking) and eye infections are also observed in some patients.
Treatment is often aimed at keeping the skin and ears free of infection

Jubilant June at the Museum of the Broads
The longer days are upon us and it’s a great time to visit the Museum of the Broads at Stalham. The hours of opening are extending to 10am to 4.30pm Sunday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday.
Why not pop in and catch this year’s ‘Broadland in Pictures’ exhibition, featuring contemporary and historic art and souvenirs from the Broads? We also have a number of new exhibits this year including our airborne lifeboat simulator, so yet another reason to #makeitstalham this June.
Next month sees some of the two great events of the year, the Steam Day on 11 June and the Jazz evening on 24 June. Added into this is free entry to all accompanied fathers on 18 June for 24
Father’s Day.
The Steam Day focuses on everything steam from engines and vehicles to our lovely Victorian steam launch! Maybe it is a nostalgic thing, but what’s not to love about the smell of steam and the fascinating old engineering which formed the basis of the Industrial Revolution?
The Jazz evening is a great evening. We are delighted that Savoir Faire’s sublime jazz will again be floating across our beautiful riverside location and Tipple’s Brewery will be running a beer tent too. Personally, I hope that the lady with the 3 tier cake stand will be there! Why not bring a picnic and make an evening of it?
Dates for your diary – Sat 1 July is our 16th Art Challenge. Call the Museum if you want a day by the river, with expert tuition and a chance to win a prize! Sat 8 July is a charity auction of promises and items. If you have anything you can donate to the Museum, please let Nicola or Reg know. Every little helps, thank you.
Just check out our Trip Adviser reviews or keep up to date with all of our latest news at www.museumofthebroads.org.uk or Twitter @MuseumBroads or our Facebook page.

All change at Norwich City by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
The championship season came to a close on Sunday 7th May as Norwich defeated QPR in their final game of the season.
In what has been an overall poor season Norwich fans can look forward to hopefully exciting times ahead, as Stuart Webber and Steve Stone plan for a large summer rebuild as Norwich try and get back in the Premier League.
Watching the final game of the season it was frustrating to see the clear quality we have as Norwich thumped QPR 4-0 on mid Sunday and
it was an opportunity for the club to start a new chapter with the new structure in place; as canary fans said goodbye to one of their most loyal servants over the past 7 years, John Ruddy.
Earlier that week the club had announced 7 players would be released over the close season and those names being: John Ruddy, Ryan Bennett, Steven Whittaker, Sebastien Bassong, Youssouf Mulumbu, Kyle Lafferty and Michael Turner.
The surprise name on that list is John Ruddy, who has been a prominent figure over the last
7 years, however he will move onto pastures new come June 30th and was given the farewell he deserved against QPR.
Ruddy captained the side in his final appearance as he put in a MOM performance with a few good saves in the game as well as interacting with the crow in what will be a fond memory in years to come.
Although it is sad to see John go it is something I feel had to be done as Stuart Webber prepares for the appointment of the new head coach and overhaul of the squad.
Go on a National Trust adventure this May half-term in Norfolk As the days get warmer and evenings become longer, May half-term is the perfect time to head outdoors and get closer to nature. From huge birds of prey to tiny creepycrawlies, from den building to growing seeds and flying kites, there’s lots to celebrate at National Trust places in Norfolk. The National Trust offers some great places to let the little ones loose. And if you need inspiration for ways to get wild, there’s always our list of 50 things to do before you’re 11¾.
What’s more, every half-term adventure helps the National Trust care for special places for years to come. Here are some of our favourite places to go wild and explore this May half-term in the region: Blickling Estate - Sow and Grow, walled garden, 30 May - why not bring your bikes for

Everyone loves walking our beautiful beaches but look a little closer and you will see washed up wet wipes, plastic bottles, broken helium balloons and pieces of plastic/styrofoam all of which cause injury to marine and land wildlife. Sadly inappropriately discarded poo bags are causing a slow starvation death to animals attracted to the cereal in the stool and eating the plastic bag (horses, deer and cattle are also dying because of this). Whilst birds and sea mammals entangled in balloon ribbon, discarded fishing line and ghost net die from slow strangulation. At the recent Mundesley Parish Council event, a display showed the shocking amount of beach pollution collected on just three, one hour dog walks.
So next time you visit the beach please take a bag (or use your dog poo bag) and look behind the sea defences or in the piles of seaweed and help tackle our appalling sea pollution. If you visit Mundesley or West Runton beaches look out for the 2 Minute Beach Clean stations which provide litter pickers and bags and share your photos with the worldwide #2minutebeachclean community. Or join one of the forthcoming Marine Conservation beach clean events - they are a great way to meet your neighbours:

DAZZLING GLASS SHOW AT NORTH LODGE TEAROOMS Susan Purser Hope, a Cromer based glass artist, has chosen the North Lodge Tea Rooms as her venue for Open Studios this year. Running from 27 May until the end of June, the show features two distinct ranges of wall hung work in fused glass. The first is a series of abstract landscape and seascapes inspired by Susan’s love of the Norfolk that she discovered when she moved here four years ago to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition to live by the sea.
Susan’s other love is the extraordinary world of entertainment that she found in the area. As she explains, “I have always loved fairgrounds and circuses so I was delighted to discover the wonders at Thursford and the delights of the Water Circus at the Hippodrome at Great Yarmouth. My favourite book is J. B. Priestley’s The Good Companions and it was amazing to find the End of Pier show at the Pavilion Theatre here in Cromer!” Examples of her circus images are also included in the exhibition. Look out for news on workshops that Susan will be running during Open Studios for the chance to make your own piece of fused glass work.

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Gresham’s School a storm to K.O. singles cup victory The first of this season’s four Cup finals was the first of two meetings between Gresham’s School A and NWSCA in the showpiece matches. Derek Philpott reports:-
‘The Knockout Singles Cup final was played at Trunch Village Hall with Peter Ward as umpire. Howard Lupton was unable to play for North Walsham so John Vaughan was drafted in as a replacement at short notice to join Andy Beane and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. The Gresham’s team consisted of Jonas Lee, Robin Thaxter and Haken Bennell. The impressive skill of young Jonas Lee showed as he led 4-0. Beane then won his first point as he levelled the opening set at 5-5. Good serving in an attacking open game from Lee ensured his opponent only got two more points as he took the first 11-7. Very entertaining play over the next two sets saw Lee staying ahead to win them 11-9, 11-7. Next Vaughan was pitted against reigning six times North Norfolk Champion Thaxter who always had the edge in a very entertaining game. Angled play from Thaxter attacked Vaughan’s mobility to win in straight. Another good start was then made by Gresham’s as Bennell took the first from Baldock-Yaxley 11-7, but the NWSCA player fought back in the
second to win 11-8. The third was level at 5-5 when a shot from Baldock-Yaxley was replayed due to the uncertainty of an edge. Baldock-Yaxley only got one more point as Bennell took the set 11-6. A very close and entertaining fourth set stayed level before Baldock-Yaxley saved a match-point at 9-10 and then narrowly forced a deciding set by taking it 15-13. The deciding fifth again started very evenly with Bennell changing ends 5-4 ahead. The rallies were then dominated by Bennell with good spin and consistency as he won this crucial set 11-5 to put Gresham’s School A 3-0 up in the final. On the table next was the battle between Thaxter and Beane. Thaxter’s steady play and powerful hitting saw him in control as he registered a straight sets win to move Gresham’s one win from a successful Cup defence. Lee and BaldockYaxley contested the fifth battle with skill abundant from both players in an entertaining contest. Lee served short down the left side of the table followed up by a forehand kill, then he would serve a low fast deep serve and generally controlled the rallies. Good hitting, mistakes – the contest had it all, but Lee led the third 7-0 and secured the Cup with an 11-4, 11-5, 11-2 win.
The Vikings rounded off their successful campaign by retaining the Norfolk Senior Cup with a convincing 43 - 26 win over Diss who scored twelve points in the final five minutes.
Diss will be joining the Vikings in London One North from September, having had an outstanding promotion season with just one defeat. The game was Norfolk Cup under 14s Final v part of ‘Norfolk's Big Rugby Wymondham Weekend’ held at Holt, where all the finals of the various Norfolk Cups were held.
The Raiders were also in action defeating Wymondham 59 - 0 to win the

The night ended with an ‘exhibition’ dead rubber as Bennell beat Vaughan in five to end the night in an enjoyable, light-hearted contest.’
The last match in the Premier Division this season saw NWSCD’s Philip Stone, Stuart Hook and James Lester (playing up) host Poacher’s David Foster, Chris Fuller and Aaron Howell. Stone took Foster the distance in the opener and nearly came back from 0-6 down in the decider but the Poacher won a close battle 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7. Lester had chances to take a two sets lead against Foster but the North Norfolk finalist took a crucial second set as he came through 10-12, 16-14, 11-4, 11-5. Howell beat Lester in four, edged out Stone 15-13 in the third and beat Hook 11-8, 11-5, 13-15, 11-8. Fuller saved a match-point in the final singles as he beat Stone 14-12 in the fifth and there was more drama in the doubles as Hook and Lester had match-points in both the fourth and fifth, but Foster and Howell took both the last two sets again 14-12 to complete a 10-0 win for Poachers.

The Club's two Youth team finalists had mixed fortunes: the Under 14s shared the Cup after a hard fought 7 - 7 draw with Wymondham (see picture) whilst the under 15s, who had insufficient numbers to field a full team, lost to Norwich in the Plate Final 38 -17.
