Another book success for Jacob
Young author, Jacob Alexander, a student at Paston Sixth Form College, has just written his second novel. Jacob’s first novel, ‘A Town Called Hope’, was published through Amazon and has been very successful, receiving some outstanding reviews.
Unlike his first novel, which was based on a mid-west town, ‘The Utopians’ is a science fiction novel set in and around London.
The book explores people with powers and the conflict between good and evil. Jacob’s passion for storytelling again shines through. In his latest work, anyone interested can read a short section of the new, yet to be published, novel on the Kindle Scout Website run by Amazon and nominate it for publication kindlescout.amazon.com/search?q=the+utopians Jacob is already planning more novels and hopes his latest novel will be published as a paperback very soon.
Cantamus choir concerts
CANTAMUS choir, under the inspirational musical direction of Philip Adams, gave a marvellous concert at Thorpe Market Church on 19 May.
Celebrating female composers, in this centennial year of the female vote, the choir sang rarely heard pieces including the beautiful mass by Isabella Leonarda and the battle cries of the suffragettes. The rallying songs of composers such as Dame Ethel Smyth, who taught Emmeline Pankhurst how to hurl missiles more effectively, have almost been forgotten. Yet this sometimes rousing, sometimes reflective music has a hugely important place in our social history. Forthcoming Fundraising Concert : Cantamus will be repeating their applauded concert on 15 June in Itteringham Village Hall, NR11 7AX, at 7pm in support of the Itteringham Village Shop appeal. Philip Adams and the choir will be accompanied by renowned composer and pianist Michael Finissy, adding magic to works by Fauré and Messager, this unique concert is not to be missed. Entry will be by donations and a fundraising raffle will be held. Refreshments will also be available.
Membership : New members are positively welcome to join the choir from 7 September. We rehearse at Thorpe Market Church on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm for 2 hours and meet for the Autumn and Spring terms only. We are particularly interested in having more men join us. If you are interested in choral music then do contact the Secretary for further information on 01263 833847 or by email cantamussingers@gmail.com.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers moved into the 21st century with the arrival of a new Atlantic 85 on station last month. All the volunteers have been working hard to get up to speed with the operation of this new boat.
There have been three Atlantic 75 lifeboats at Happisburgh since the first arrived in 2009. This brand new Atlantic 85, which has larger engines, is longer and wider than the 75, has radar and DF and carries a fourth crew member, is well equipped to enable our crews to carry out rescues at sea more effectively.
This Atlantic 85 Number B-899 is named Howard Bell, who was part of the RNLI in Harwich and is the main benefactor for this boat.
The boat arrived at Happisburgh on Monday 8 May, after travelling from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, where it was built.
both Tuesday and Wednesday and recovered three times each day, then on Thursday it launched five times so all five helm could be assessed. Once all the helms were assessed, the new boat was fully equipped and placed on service at 8:30pm on 11 May.
On the first day the crew familiarised themselves with the boat’s lay-out and equipment, then the Tuesday was the first chance to take the boat to sea with our RNLI Inspector on board to train the helm and crew, along with shore crew, on the safe operation of the boat and equipment.
Tim Grimmer, senior helm at Happisburgh said “the crew have got used to the new boat and think it’s great and will allow them to, hopefully, save more lives at sea. It will also help to train our six new crew members”.
The boat was launched on

to talk about their experiences.

North Walsham and District Historical Society SKELETONS IN THE CUPBOARD by GREG BURROWS
Greg started his talk by explaining that he had always been fascinated by family histories, both good and bad, warts and all.
He has got back to relatives in the 1600 century - his family has always lived in the same locality. Some records are scant while others are better recorded, often because they practiced a trade that was essential to the small community, like brushmaker and weaver.
The Norfolk Records Society Book, a Who’s Who of Norfolk has been a great source of information of how people lived often in conditions that left a lot to be desired.
Army records are a good source for researching people’s history - Corporal John Bailey in Captain Kelly’s Company moved to Nova
Scotia after marrying his wife from Swanton Morley, in Norwich Cathedral.
Greg showed us a picture taken in 1862 of John Youngman’s 3rd wife Mary Flaxman. She was a ‘northender’ from Kings Lynn - this was the poor part of town, she was a great swearer. After a fracas in a house in True’s Yard, she was sentenced to nine months hard labour in Norwich Prison. While there she gave birth to a boy. Greg is a direct descendant of hers.
Another notable person was John Flynn, a London policeman 5’ 7½ tall aged 36 years, who was committed to a lunatic asylum in Norwich - he was prone to epileptic fits, often placed in a straight jacket and incarcerated in a padded cell. In reality he was probably suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Itteringham Open Gardens
Tucked away in North Norfolk, the beautiful village of Itteringham is holding its annual open gardens event on 11 June from 11am - 5pm.
Along with 10 gardens to visit, there will be plants for sale and homemade teas, cakes & light lunches available, both at the shop and the village hall.
All money raised on the day is going to support Itteringham Community Shop.
Organiser, Rachel Burbidge said "We have a wonderful selection of
Pamphlets advertising the contents of houses are of great value in determining who lived there. Property deeds are another valuable source. Some properties are recorded as a ‘Manor Incorporate’ and the residents as ‘Court Tenants’ or ‘Copy Holders’, both having a similar meaning.
Family life can be difficult to follow. Some names are repeated over several generations. Incest was also known and is very confusing, especially father daughter couplings.
In 1765, a lot of single ladies letters reflected the relationships of family members, especially in the distribution of their wills.
Glyn finished by saying his family was no better or worse than many others. He is fascinated by the detail, none of which any of us can change.
Next month’s talk is ‘Over Here’.
Mike Sothcott
gardens open for visitors to enjoy, including large rectory gardens, courtyards and small cottage gardens.
Following the success of last year's event we are expecting a bumper turnout on the day as we know how many people locally love gardens, and want to support our village shop".
The village shop became one of the country's first community run shops when Brian Fairhead, the last owner died, back in 1994. There has been a shop trading on the same site in Wolterton Road since 1637, and with the shop's future currently in doubt, this is one of the key fundraising events of the year.

Laser Therapy at Coltishall Clinic
Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping, and can be performed under local anaesthesia. This removes the need for invasive surgery under general anaesthetic.
Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 1525% of all adults.
Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.
EVLT treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. It involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut.
Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins. For more information or to book an appointment, Call 0800 0430737 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

2 Desserts for £9.00! THE SHOW MUST GO ON IN NORTH NORFOLK! Cinema goers in North Norfolk have been able to breathe a sigh of relief thanks to the efforts of a small group of volunteers supported by a local business.
When Arts North Norfolk ceased trading earlier this year, it looked like the popular film matinees it ran at the Atrium in North Walsham for up to 180 people might come to an end. However, local residents Richard & Paula Crossley, and other film enthusiasts wanted to ensure the show went on.
“We knew how popular the matinees were, and the enjoyment they brought to people throughout North Norfolk, so were happy to step in and do our bit,” said Richard Crossley.
“At the matinee people have been able to watch a film, meet up with friends and enjoy tea and cake for just £5 – a price only possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Hughes Electrical. So we were delighted when they agreed to continue.”
There is a matinee on the last Friday of the month, and some evening screenings booked in too, with a bar. They have a licence to show early-release films such as multi Oscar winning La La Land, and hope to screen some non-main stream films in the future.
Angela Hudson from Hughes’ North Walsham Branch added “As a business we have been operating in the town for decades so like to make sure we have a vibrant local community.
“Richard & Paula have done a tremendous job in not only keeping it all going but looking at ways to make

Flowers in Bloom
My garden now is a delight, It begins to look quite bright, Lilac and pink London Pride, Grow together side by side. Pansies, white, yellow and deep red Are popping up beside the shed. Forget-me-nots grow under the tree, A soft blue haze for all to see. Golden wallflowers scent the air, Red poppies pop up here and there, Oh, how I wish I had the room So I could get more flowers to bloom.

An Everyday Story of Country Folk? By Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr
After the last two months’ articles about probate court fee increases akin to a ‘death tax’ I am returning to the much safer territory of a good old family feud about inheritances.
Whatever intellectual spin I might put on it, such rifts and battles have a soap opera quality about them.
By any measure, the case of Ashcroft v Webster (2017) is extreme.
An Extended Civil Restraint Order (ECRO) made against Rupert Jolyon St. John Webster two years ago has been renewed for a further two years, in order to deter his repeated litigation against other members

of his family over a dispute about his late grandparents’ estates.
The legal fees in the case have cost Rupert his house, office and agricultural business; but still he is determined to battle on, even though his case is without merit.
Rupert’s original claim was dismissed in 2013 as it was groundless. It was his parents’ deaths in 2006 and 2007 which triggered the family dispute. Rupert alleged that his grandparents had promised to leave the farmhouse (named The Priory) to Rupert’s father and so therefore Rupert thought that it should now be his, by right of succession. The High Court dismissed his claim but Rupert continued his fight, and on three separate times sought leave to appeal, all of which were dismissed.
Back in 2015, under the ECRO, a judge issued an injunction forbidding Rupert to enter The Priory; to interfere with or prevent the marketing or sale of it; to publish or use words stating that he had to give permission for its sale or that he had any share in The Priory.
In late April 2017, upon application by the executors, another judge held that Rupert’s behaviour since the 2015 ECRO showed that

he will stop at nothing and so renewed the ECRO for another two years. The reasons given were that there is a serious risk to the executors, to the people who have recently bought the house from the estate, and generally to the administration of public justice. Part of the judge’s thinking was that Rupert’s persistent claims are imposing burdens on the stretched court system, to the disadvantage of other court users.

North Walsham Air Cadets – Archery to Flying
2110 (North Walsham) Squadron recently attended the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing Field Competition.
Eight North Walsham cadets joined cadets from all over Norfolk and Suffolk, and a team from Gibraltar, for a weekend of competition in Thetford Forest.
Events included archery, first aid, orienteering, aircraft recognition, leadership and field craft exercises and the extremely popular river crossing. For this, cadets built a makeshift raft to ferry the whole team across a river. North Walsham always does well at this event and another year has passed when the cadets stayed, mostly, dry!
After that exciting and tiring weekend, three North Walsham cadets headed off to the RAF College at Cranwell for training flights in the Grob Tutor aircraft. This is the same type that new RAF pilots learn to fly on. Cadets can experience controlling the aircraft and aerobatics if they wish all with an experienced RAF pilot.
We are currently recruiting cadets between 12 and 17 as well as adult staff and committee members. Anyone interested in joining, North Walsham Air Cadets parade every Monday and Thursday, at Squadron
Headquarters, North Walsham Primary School, Manor Road, North Walsham, NR28 9HG from 7pm till 9.30pm.
More information about the RAF Air Cadets can be found at www.raf.mod.uk/aircadets or by visiting the Squadron on a parade evening.

Big Society Fund wants your applications!
Growing popularity of Big Society Fund reflected in increased number of applications Nearly two thirds of parishes across North Norfolk have received at least one Big Society Fund grant from North Norfolk District Council during the first five years of the scheme being run.
And those local groups who have not yet submitted successful applications are being encouraged to do so after it was agreed to continue the fund for at least another year.
In the 2016/17 financial year, ten additional parishes who had not previously received funding made a successful grant application. This means that in total, 77 parishes in North Norfolk have received at least one BSF grant. This equates to 63% of parishes in North Norfolk.
The total handed out by the BSF in the financial year was £273,817.65, shared between 37 grants. The annual allocated budget for the BSF is £225,000. The additional figure of slightly more than £48,000 came from reserves accrued from previous years when the entire allocated grant fund was not used.
The number of applications to the BSF increased by 51% in the last year. Likely reasons for this include increased community need, reduction in the availability of other grants and funding, proactive promotion of the fund, publicity regarding grant awards, and
media publicity in relation to completed projects.
Since the fund started in 2012, 183 grant awards totalling approximately £1,400,000 have been made to 150 organisations. A recent meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet considered these figures and resolved that the BSF grant scheme should continue at its current level of funding (£225,000) for another year.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and chairman of its Big Society Fund Grants Panel, said “This is a very successful fund which has enabled a wide variety of projects to be implemented across an impressive percentage of parishes.
“The fund has particularly benefitted smaller parishes that may be less likely to receive funding for services and facilities from other sources, for example as a result of new housing.
“We would be very keen to receive applications from those parishes who have not yet made successful applications and we have a very professional and supportive team in place to give pre-application guidance to make sure applications meet the criteria.”
Grants from the fund have been used to complete projects of varied sizes. Some have been used as contributions to larger projects requiring significant funding such as those

undertaken by Sheringham Museum and the Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe. Grants offered by the Big Society Fund can be crucial in securing additional funding from organisations such as the Heritage Lottery Fund or Sport England.
Grants have funded projects that have increased volunteering opportunities, reduced social isolation, increased opportunities for people of all ages to participate in sports and activities - thereby improving their physical, mental and social wellbeing - and created sense of pride and cohesion within a community.
In addition, the second North Norfolk Big Society Awards event was held at Sheringham Little Theatre in March 2017. Members of the public as well as a range of organisations were able to nominate people, community projects and organisations for awards. Over 150 people attended the successful event.
Awards were made in the following categories: Outstanding Contribution by a Young Person to Their Community, Voluntary Services to Young People, Voluntary Services Award to Sport, Community Project Award, Voluntary Services to a Neighbourhood, Outstanding Contribution to a Big Society Funded Project, and Act of Heroism Award.
A special thank you was also given to organisations and individuals for their help and support during the tidal surge in January 2017.

Nissan Qualified Technician Success for Harry
Harry Pigott joined Crayford and Abbs in Year 10 at school, deciding to fulfil a lifetime ambition to be a mechanic, having lived with dyslexia all his life, alongside the stigma of being ‘thick’ (his quote).
Harry instantly felt at home in the mechanical environment and gained respect from his seniors very quickly. So much so that we offered him a three year manufacturing apprenticeship with Nissan, the qualifier being an online assessment in the first instance, which he passed without the prescribed assistance!
Harry’s journey has been one of massive success. Cromer Academy supported Kevin Abbs in offering him an extra six months’ evening tutorials and an exam to complete his
English to desired standards, and Crayford and Abbs funded some private tuition to assist him to pass his Maths.
Throughout the three year apprenticeship, Harry has continually proven his technical and electrical skills, passing every component of his qualification indeed his Nissan tutor praised his natural ability and supported this with confirming he would trust him to work on his own car and that he was one of his ‘success/star’ pupils.
Mark Wright stated what a pleasure Harry is to work with - he is always on time and arrives with a smile!
Harry graduated this year, taking his Service Manager, Mark Wright and DP, Kevin Abbs, alongside his girlfriend, Kimberly, to the
Nissan Graduation Ceremony at Donnington Race Park, where he was duly presented with his certificate and a present from Nissan Senior Manager, Mr James Deakin, Head of Network Training. Kevin Abbs added ‘what a pleasure it has been to watch Harry grow from a young 15 year old through to a fully qualified Nissan Technician, a young man and a credit to Crayford and Abbs.
The final step of the journey is for him to complete a Master Technician qualification, which should commence in a couple of years’ time.
Full programme for Holt Festival 2017 revealed
‘One of the most important cultural events in Norfolk’ Peter Wilson, former Chief Executive, Norwich Theatre Royal The full programme for Holt Festival 2017, North Norfolk’s award winning, multi-arts, international festival has been announced. Now in its 9th year, the Festival brings outstanding theatre, music, comedy, literature, children’s and visual art events to the picturesque Georgian town for eight days, from 22 to 30 July. This year’s festival is the final year of Charles Pugh’s tenure as Artistic Director, and he has delivered a programme that combines the best of na-

tional and international talents with some of the cream of our own Norfolk performers.
Major new announcements include former Today/ Women’s Hour anchor Sue MacGregor interviewed by Alan Johnson MP, an exclusive exhibition of original paintings by internationally renowned, Norwich born artist Edward Seago, and, by popular demand, a repeat appearance by Margaret Hodge, Luke Wright renowned as the scourge of the waste and inefficiency of successive governments. UEA graduate poet and broadcaster Luke Wright, who enjoyed massive multi award winning success with his first play ‘What I Learned From Johnny Bevan’ including a three week sell out season in London’s West End, performs his new show The Toll and Norfolk resident James McDermott brings his five star hit Rubber Ring back to the region that inspired it. There are lots of free events for families and children too, with a full day of outdoor family fun and an extensive programme of free activities and shows for children through the week.
Outgoing Artistic Director Charles Pugh said ‘I’m so proud of this programme. I think, perhaps the most diverse we’ve yet delivered. From the unabashed popularity of glam rocker Suzi Quatro and one of the country’s funniest comedians Jasper Carrott, to tales of warmongers, witch hunters, brain attacks and public money squanderers. We begin and end this year’s festival with tributes to radio broadcasting - my favourite medium and in between take in some of the finest music, theatre, comedy, cabaret/burlesque and literary events that Holt has seen’. Simply the best: North Norfolk’s beaches are top of the league Council scoops six Blue Flags and wins national recognition North Norfolk officially is the District with the best beaches in England, with no fewer than six of its beaches being awarded prestigious Blue Flags. East Runton and West Runton beaches have joined Cromer, Mundesley, Sea Palling and Sheringham in the top tier of English beaches.
The awards are given out only to those beaches that have the highest quality of water, facilities, environmental education and management, with superb levels of cleanliness and safety. The only other district that has six Blue Flags is Thanet. North Norfolk District Council Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “This is fantastic news and confirms something we already knew – our wonderful and well-managed beaches are the best in the country. “This is a great result given the amount of resources and services that need to be put in place in order to satisfy the strict criteria. Our staff have put in a
tremendous effort in a bid to secure these Blue Flags, and all their hard work has paid off.”
The stunning success comes as the internationallyrecognised awards celebrate their 30th birthday. As well as the six Blue Flags, the beach at Wells, which is owned by the Holkham Estate but jointly managed by NNDC and the RNLI, has won a Seaside Award, which means it guarantees visitors a clean, safe, attractive and wellmanaged coastal stretch.
Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure & Culture, said “This Blue Flags success is sure to prove a hit for the tourism industry and will help

There is evidence that the awards attract more visitors, with the number of people visiting the District’s beaches rising from 100,000 a year to 400,000 since they started being awarded Blue Flags.
Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the two new Blue Flag beaches at East and West Runton, said “I am delighted that both beaches in Runton have achieved Blue Flag status. It’s a great achievement by the council, but it’s also down in large part to the great work done by so many people in the community who take great pride in our beaches and help to keep them clean.”

Everyone loves walking our beautiful beaches but look a little closer and you will see washed up wet wipes, plastic bottles, broken helium balloons and pieces of plastic/styrofoam all of which cause injury to marine and land wildlife. Sadly inappropriately discarded poo bags are causing a slow starvation death to animals attracted to the cereal in the stool and eating the plastic bag (horses, deer and cattle are also dying because of this). Whilst birds and sea mammals entangled in balloon ribbon, discarded fishing line and ghost net die from slow strangulation.
don’t forget we also have an excellent selection of Blinds, including Roller, Roman, Wood, Venetian, and a Great range of Black Out Rollers!
At the recent Mundesley Parish Council event, a display showed the shocking amount of beach pollution collected on just three, one hour dog walks.
So next time you visit the beach please take a bag (or use your dog poo bag) and look behind the sea defences or in the piles of seaweed and help tackle our appalling sea pollution. If you visit Mundesley or West Runton beaches look out for the 2 Minute Beach Clean stations which provide litter pickers and bags and share your photos with the worldwide #2minutebeachclean community. Or join one of the forthcoming Marine Conservation beach clean events - they are a great way to meet your neighbours: • 8 June 4pm Keswick Beach Bacton Rudrams gap • 17 June 2pm Mundesley opposite Beach Hut Cafe Arcade by Coastwatch Tower • 2 July 10am Sea Palling ramp next to Reefs Bar
If you are unable to join us, there are other ways to help such as looking at your lifestyle and doing what you can to educate, minimise plastic use and never allow helium balloons to blow away. More information Michelle Duddy northnorfolkbeachcleans@gmail.com

Showcasing building excellence – nominate your favourite project Entry opens for 36th year of Graham Allen Awards Help to celebrate excellent design which complements the area by nominating a building for a Graham Allen Award.
North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and sensitive renovation projects that complement the district’s unique environment.
North Norfolk District Council’s Graham Allen Award has for the last 35 years celebrated best practice in design and conservation in the district and is now open for entries.
Cllr Sue Arnold, Cabinet Member for Planning, said “There is a long and impressive history of quality development and thoughtful renovation in north Norfolk and these awards are designed to celebrate that fact. The awards are an excellent chance to recognise projects which have made a standout contribution to the built environment, local communities and heritage. Whether it be a new build, extension, restoration or refurbishment, the Graham Allen Award recognises excellence in all design projects.” Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the awards scheme has recognised a diverse selection of north Norfolk’s finest architecture.
If you are aware of a building project that has helped to transform your village or town within the district, or if you have created a dream home or building we want to hear from you.
The closing date for entries is Friday 30 June. For more information go to www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/tasks/conservation/nominate-a-building-fora-conservation-design-award-2017/. If you are nominating a scheme please ensure you have the permission of the owner.
The Graham Allen Award is presented annually by the council to the scheme considered to make the most significant contribution to the built environment within the district. Schemes considered worthy of commendation are also acknowledged by the presentation of certificates. The panel of judges comprises of members elected from the Development Committee, the relevant Portfolio Member and Mr Edward Allen (who represents the Allen family). If you would like to nominate a scheme please go online and complete the entry form.
Winners have ranged from the extension to Binham Priory, to the refurbishment of the Gunton Arms, Thorpe Market.
Last year’s winner was Hootz House at Pensthorpe Natural Park. The imaginative play barn has been a huge success for the region and its unique design has added to its fame. As well as winning the Graham Allen Award, the project has also been nominated for a number of national awards including from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The project has created high quality children’s play facilities within a building that complements the naturalistic setting of the nature reserve and this has all been done whilst utilising sustainable methods of construction.
The People’s Choice Award went to the new tourist information centre and platform bridge at Sheringham Train Station. This project captured the unique character of the station and improved facilities for residents and visitors alike.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Nutsey’s eyes continue to show an improvement but at present we are unsure whether or not he will need to continue with his treatment to ensure the problem does not recur. He is a lovely friendly boy and does love to have a cuddle when you go in to clean his pen. Once he has had a fuss he will go and sit in his housing unit while we make his pen clean and tidy again.
We recently took in two cats and seven kittens from a home where the owner had health problems and could no longer look after them. One of the cats, and the oldest kitten, were re-homed shortly after they had been examined, vaccinated, chipped and given clean bills of health by our vets. The other kittens were quite small but, as Stephanie always has a waiting list of people looking to offer homes to kittens, we knew they would also be leaving us as soon as they had been checked over at the vets. They have all now left and are happily settled with their new families. Rae Rae, their mother, was a joy to look after, a lovely gentle little cat, very happy to be groomed and cuddled by everyone she came into contact with. She was also a very good mother and could often be found playing with her kittens and showing her “kittenish” side. Grooming Parlour We were therefore all delighted to learn that this lovely little cat Full Grooming & had been chosen Hydrobathing too and is now in Kerstin Rogers Available residence in her 01692 501212 new home. Westover Vets offer Keyhole Surgery
At Westover Vets we are able to offer keyhole spays and surgery for dogs, making us one of only a few practices nationwide using this fantastic technique. Keyhole surgery, or laparoscopy, involves the use of delicate instruments and small cameras to perform surgery through tiny holes in the abdomen. The advantages for our patients are huge.
Research has shown keyhole spaying is 70% less painful than traditional techniques.
We also recently had a call from our friend catching the feral cats to say that they had found a little kitten about two weeks old. About to leave to clean the cats at Dilham, I made a quick detour and picked her up. On returning home, there was another message to say that a second kitten Rae Rae, our lovely little mum with Fred, one had been caught and I of her delightful kittens, now settled in their therefore returned to the new homes site to collect it, but by the time I arrived to collect it another kitten had been found so there were two more kittens to come into care making, it three in all. These last two were about 6 weeks old and fortunately, after one day, they had started to eat both wet and dry kitten food, so are thriving and no doubt will soon be in new homes with people on the waiting list. It is now a priority to catch the remaining cats on this site before they become pregnant again.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Laser therapy helping pets at Toll Barn Vets
At Toll Barn Vets we believe in constantly providing the highest standard of care for our patients by utilising cutting edge technology to reduce reliance on medication. This is particularly beneficial for chronic conditions and significantly improves our pets’ quality of life.
As part of this commitment we offer our patients Laser Therapy which reduces inflammation and provides pain relief. It is effective at treating acute and chronic pain as well as improving wound healing. It is most frequently performed in contact with the area being treated, however, for nervous patients it can be used without contact with the body and can also be applied to acupuncture points to achieve similar responses to traditional acupuncture without requiring application of needles.
Laser therapy is safe, painless and fast with most sessions taking 5-10 minutes per area of treatment and most patients show significant improvement after 3-5 treatment sessions. Laser therapy stimulates the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity which reduces inflammation, provides pain relief, stimulates nerve regeneration and Freddie having treatment improves tissue repair often leading to a reduction in requirement for medication and reduced healing times. Laser therapy often forms part of the treatment for osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease (eg hip and elbow dysplasia), intervertebral disc disease (spinal pain), skin disease, post operative wound healing, sprains and strains, treatment of orthopaedic disease (eg cruciate ligament rupture) and periodontal disease. We are one of the few centres within East Anglia to have a Laser suitable to perform these treatments and are happy to discuss the suitability of laser therapy as part of your pet’s care.

Successful mental health week at Paston Sixth Form College
Paston Sixth Form College finished a very successful week of mental health activities with a talk by Norman Lamb MP.
Norman was invited by the Student Executive who were keen to listen to his views on mental health provision in the UK. Norman spoke candidly about his own family’s personal experience of mental health. He impressed the students with his knowledge and passion to support people in this region and throughout the country who suffer from mental health issues. The session included a range of questions from the students who questioned him on his views and mental health provision.
Bella Whitely-Tye, who organised the event, said “We were very grateful to Norman Lamb providing an inspiring talk on mental health issues. It was brilliant to see so many attending the event”.
Throughout the week, students had been engaged in a range of activities, including “Tea and Talk” every day in the Study Centre, a well-being drop in service, support for exam stress and a session from the charity, Mind. The students organised a cake bake and raised over £200 for Norwich Mind.
Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “The week has been a tremendous success with excellent participation from staff and students. It was very kind of Norman to give up his time to speak to the students on mental health issues”. North Walsham Times 520 June 3rd 2017

New ‘futureproofed’ play area, catering kiosk, toilets and showers near to completion as part of North Norfolk District Council’s £1m Cromer West Prom investment
North Norfolk District Council’s new facilities along Cromer’s West Promenade will be ready for use by residents and visitors in advance of the 2017 summer season.
The ‘futureproofed’ catering kiosk, toilets and showers units, as well as the new play equipment, are able to be craned out of the area to higher ground in the event of a storm surge warning.
The equipment for the themed children’s play area, featuring a shipwreck, is being constructed on site this week, with Wetpour safety surfacing being introduced once the structure is in place. It is hoped the play area will be ready for use in two to three weeks, dependent on weather and safety inspection.
The new catering kiosk and facilities, including accessible public toilets, beach showers and changing facilities are receiving their final touches and will be ready for use in advance of the summer season. These facilities are adjacent to the area of disabled parking which was provided last year.
refurbishment of the viewing turrets and the installation of solar lighting, opening up this end of the Prom to visitors parking at the Runton Road car park. Improvements costing £110,000 were also made to the Art Deco block, where a concession opportunity remains available.
As part of this further phase of investment, the white steps have been refurbished and new promenade lighting will also be installed before the summer. In addition, the children’s play area is set to have an underwater mural painted during June illustrating the flora and fauna of the Cromer Chalk Reef.
For all enquiries regarding the Art Deco concession opportunity, please contact Richard.Eardley@north-norfolk.gov.uk
Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Leisure said “These new facilities will be a superb addition to Cromer’s offering and we hope residents’ and visitors’ children will especially love Cromer’s very own shipwreck on dry land!
“We are committed to making a number of investments in Cromer to make the town more attractive for local people and visitors. We have a four-year programme to enhance jobs and the tourism economy and it’s great to see yet another element of this come to life.”
The new facilities are part of a £1million investment by North Norfolk District Council into Cromer’s West Promenade to increase the attraction of the whole of Cromer Promenade.
Last year improvements were made to the zigzag path, including North Walsham Times 520 June 3rd 2017

Bringing the Bard to the people – by bike
A pedal-powered theatre company is bringing a novel production of a Shakespeare comedy to a Norfolk college – by bicycle.
The Handlebards touring drama group has taken the classic plays of England’s most famous writer to two countries and three continents since it was set up on a shoestring four years ago.
A four-strong female cast will perform As You Like It in the grounds of Paston Sixth Form College (Lawns site) at North Walsham on Friday 9 June – in a picnic-style show organised by Sheringham Little Theatre.
The plays are billed as energetic, chaotic, full of laughter, and featuring lots of costume changes and cross-dressing for the single sex cast. Hand-crafted Pashley bikes are used in the show, and – with trailers – to provide sustainable transport for the show’s set, props and costumes as well as cast.

The Handlebards aim to take Shakespeare to communities in an eco-friendly, accessible way. They have also promoted British culture on tour in Africa and Asia.
As You Like It will tell the story of lovers Rosalind and Orlando who have been forced into exile in the Forest of Arden and find themselves entangled in a game of love, lust and mistaken identity.

Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “Our theatre has close links with Paston College, especially its drama department, and we are delighted to be able to link up with the college again to stage this novel outdoor Shakespeare production, which should be fun for students and local families alike.”
Doors open at 6pm, with audience members encouraged to pack a picnic and chairs – but to bring ponchos and raincoats, not umbrellas, in case the weather is wet. The show runs from 7pm to 9pm.
For tickets (£12, students £6) and more info contact the Little Theatre box office on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com
North Norfolk District Council holds Disability Sports Day
North Norfolk District Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs Project are holding a Disability Sports Day for adults on Wednesday 14 June at Cromer Lawn Tennis Club.
All the activities are free and there will be different sports for everyone to try. Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said “Last year’s event was met with great enthusiasm and everyone had fun, so we hope to repeat that success and encourage more people with disabilities to get active and participate in sports.
“We all know from the Paralympics that disability is no impediment to success and it’s vital everyone can have the opportunity to get the benefits that come from being active. Sport is good for both mind and body.” The activities available on the day will include:
• Boccia – this is just like boules and can be played from a chair, a wheelchair or standing • Tennis • Short tennis • Racquet ball • Table tennis • New Age Kurling - this is just like curling but on wheels
The Disability Sports Day will run from 10am until 12pm and is open to over18s with a disability. There will be a free BBQ for all participants and carers from 12.15pm.
28
If you would like to come along please contact 01263 516305 or email wyn.nurse@north-norfolk.gov.uk so numbers for the BBQ can be assessed.

Farke the man for Norwich? by Joel Lodge, our Football Correspondent
At the time of me writing this article the head coach search for Norwich City looks to be a near done deal, as Stuart Webber looks to have found his man. The coach in question is Borussia Dortmund’s U23s team manager, Daniel Farke. The news of this was first broken on Monday 22nd May by John Percy of the Telegraph, with reports saying he is close to signing a two year deal with Norwich as he leaves Borussia Dortmund U23s at the end of the current season. Farke seems to be very much cut from the same cloth as Wagner who Webber appointed as Huddersfield head coach in 2015. Since Wagner left, Farke has had good success at
Dortmund after turning them into promotion ready candidates in the German fourth division with the nest defensive record in the league; somewhere that Norwich certainly need to address. After doing some research myself, it seems as though Dortmund fans see him as a coach who is certainly on the up so it could potentially represent something of a coup for Norwich City. Farke has also been linked with two Bundesliga teams during his tenure with Dortmund U23s, as Bayer Leverkusen and Darmstadt have both been linked with the 40 year old German.
There was plenty to celebrate at the Club's end of season annual dinner : 4th place in the League and the Norfolk Senior Cup for the Vikings, a solid post promotion season for the Raiders rounded off by winning the Norfolk Bowl (2nd XV Cup) and a great season for the Youth & Minis, including an outstanding 40th Minis Festival in March and the Under 14s sharing the County Cup with Wymondham.
In terms of incomings there have been little rumours so far, however out of contract Barnsley winger, Marley Watkins, seems set for a move to Carrow Road after a very good season last year. The coming months should be a very interesting and exciting time to be a Norwich fans we await the start of next season. STOP PRESS: Norwich bag thier man just before we went to press - a 2-year contract to get Canaries back into the Premier League. Fun times ahead!
awards and is shown with Youth Player of the Season, Joe Fairweather. Playing Director Al Hepburn (on Joe's immediate left) and Head of Rugby James Brooks, who played alongside Shaw at Premiership side Wasps, are also pictured. The Vikings’ Player of the Year, chosen by the players and coaches, was second row forward Jono Lawson. "Jono was consistently one of our top players all season", said Brooks, "always at the forefront, his work rate was exceptional."
More than 200 attended the Dinner at Rossi's Leisure where guest speaker Simon Shaw talked about his professional career which spanned over 20 years, during which he won 71 caps for England and twice played in tests for the British Lions. He recalled how he did not start playing rugby seriously until well into his teens when he began in Cranleigh's Youth Teams. Shaw presented the
He chose flanker Ed Sampson as the Most Improved Player commenting "Ed has been a great find. He grabbed his opportunity when he got into the first team in October and has gone on improving as the season progressed."
North Walsham Velos members recently completed the Tour de Broads South Sportive, the majority of them completing the 100 mile route, starting and finishing at a very windy Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth.
Reuben Johnson, a Year 3 pupil from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, has just signed a contract to play and represent Norwich City Football Club in their Under 9 Academy Team.
North Walsham Velos
The wind was a real problem for many riders - gusting to 40mph it was, for the majority of the ride, either a head or cross wind, making the effort required significantly harder. But with three drink stops and a lunch break at Thorpe St Andrew by the river, the riders were never short of food, drinks and banter.
The friendly nature of these sportives means that support comes from everyone involved an encouraging word during a break, stopping to help fix punctures, to cheering your fellow riders over the finishing line.
Cycling is a very sociable way of keeping fit and group riding is the best way of venturing further afield, safe in the knowledge the group looks out for each other and keeps everyone safe and mobile.
If you are interested in getting a little fitter North Walsham Velos have beginners rides every Tuesday evening, meeting at the Town Clock in Market Place for a 6.30pm depart. See www.northwalshamvelos.co.uk for details
Further to the North Walsham Velos appeal for a base to train from back in February, we are still hoping someone can help, if you feel you can, please contact Duncan on 07551 005956 North Walsham Times 520 June 3rd 2017

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCE Win Handicap Doubles Cup
The team of James Lester (29), Ben Lester (35) and Andrew Weston (37) lined up for NWSCE in the Handicap Doubles Cup final while opponent’s Gresham’s School A were represented by Robin Thaxter (0), Haken Bennell (5) and Colin Humphries (25). Peter Ward reports on the Final that took place at Antingham Village Hall.
‘The first two battles saw NWSCE start 21 points ahead of their more experienced opponents and the NWSCE trio played very sensibly in mixing a pushing game with attacking well when opportunities arose as they ran out easy winners. In the third battle Gresham’s started 2-37 down against the Lesters but the combination of Bennell’s spin and Thaxter’s positional play proved too strong as they pulled one back with a 51-46 win. The next two battles both went to the golden point proving to be the tensest part of the evening with NWSCE caught at 45-45 in the fourth and 47-47 in the fifth and as often happens in handicap contests they matched the better team before losing. Gresham’s School A had recovered from a 0-2 deficit to lead the final 3-2 however the Lesters then found the composure they had at the start of the night to win the sixth battle easily. With the final locked at 3-3, unbeaten Thaxter and Bennell (2) took on Weston and Ben Lester (36). The Gresham’s duo looked favourites to win this encounter but their opponents were now having less trouble with Bennell’s spin and hence the pressure moved to the other end of the table. Gresham’s tried everything in their armoury but their opponents had all the answers and won 51-41. With confidence now high, the Lesters (32) faced Thaxter and Humphries (12) winning 51-39 at a canter and hence

sealing the Cup 5-3’
Jonas Lee took the place of Humphries as Gresham’s School A also battled NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and Howard Lupton in the Knockout Doubles Cup Final. The match took place at Trunch Village Hall with John Vaughan acting as umpire. Derek Philpott picks up the story with Gresham’s School A leading the Final 2-0 :
NWSCA won the set 12-10 on the cruellest of net-cords. The fourth was level at 5-5, then a run of three consecutive points including a glorious short angle shot from Bennell helped Gresham’s take it 11-7. The deciding fifth saw NWSCA change ends leading 5-3 before taking the next five points and their first win of the night 11-5, however Gresham’s punished any loose returns in the fifth contest to move one win from the Cup.
‘The third battle saw Thaxter and Bennell on the table against Beane and Baldock-Yaxley. Gresham’s led 7-5 before fast attacking play The sixth contest saw Thaxter and Bennell saw Baldock-Yaxley hit a winner and Beane and Beane and Lupton share the first two sets. do likewise to level.
