Mayor’s Presentation
Representatives of North Walsham Town Council gathered at the Cameo Cafe last month so that outgoing Town Mayor Cllr Barry Hester could fulfil the final official function of his year in office the presentation of cheques to his two nominated charities, North Walsham Dementia Support Group and St Nicholas Church World War I Memorial Window Restoration Fund.
In total Barry raised £1,925.84 meaning that each charity received a cheque for £962.92 - gratefully acknowledged by both.
The Dementia Support Group will be ploughing the money straight into activities for its regulars, whilst the Window Restoration Project is going ahead with a major grant application and this amount will be further evidence of strong local support. By George! Meet the many faces of comic genius Joyce
Her cut-glass middle-class accent patiently tried to keep order amid the chaos of nursery school.
But there is more to Joyce Grenfell than the long-suffering teacher constantly telling George “don’t do that!”
And a one woman show at Sheringham Little Theatre aims to highlight the acting, writing and singing talents of the comic genius who graced stage and screen during her heyday between the 1940s and 60s.
Joyce, the Victoria Wood of her day, is best known for her nursery sketches including the Nativity, with laugh out loud lines such as “Jimmy, you are my first shepherd, not a racing car you are.” She also has to deal with a cast member who is biting the school hamster and explaining why there are four kings – “we have four lovely crowns and it is a pity not to use them.”
But there will also be appearances by other characters such as frumpy Lumpy Latimer attending a girls school reunion and Shirley’s Cockney girlfriend.
Joyce is played by Cromer-based actress Loraine Metcalfe, a regular at the venue’s

Glazed Egg Custard Tart
Ian Wales is Sous Chef at the Links Hotel and this is one of his favourites
For the pastry 140g butter (diced and chilled) 250g Plain flour, 1 zest of lemon, 100g caster sugar, 1 egg (beaten) 1 tablespoon milk. For the egg custard 250g double cream, 250g milk, 1 vanilla pod split, whole nutmeg, 8 egg yolks, 100g caster sugar.
1. To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour with the lemon zest until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the sugar, egg and milk and bring together to form a dough. This can be made a couple of days in advance.
2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out and use it to line a 20cm tart tin, leave 2cm of pastry hanging over the edge. Rest the pastry in the fridge for 30 mins
3. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the case with baking beans, bake blind for 20 mins, then remove the beans and continue to cook for a further 20 mins until the base is light golden brown colour. Remove from oven and reduce the temperature to 140C/120C fan/gas 1.
Serving suggestions; Fresh berries & vanilla mascarpone cream. Poached rhubarb & crushed gingerbread biscuits
01263 824555 01263 838383 01263 579579
4. Bring the cream, milk, vanilla pod. Beat the egg yolks with the sugar until pale, then pour the hot milk and cream over, beating as you go. Strain custard into a jug, allow to settle for a few mins, then skim off any froth.
5. Carefully pour the custard into the tart case, grate some nutmeg over the top and bake for 40 mins or until just set with the very slightest wobble in the middle. Remove from the oven, trim the pastry edges off (away from the filling), then leave to cool. If putting the tart in the fridge allow to cool completely before hand as it could cause the tart to crack/split.

Sandi Starfish returns for the fourth year to help keep children for you or ideally approach someone in uniform, "We decided that this would be a great way for her safe this summer and tell them they are lost. legacy to live on and that's how Sandi the Starfish QRUIRON SROLFH XN

A five armed friend is returning to Norfolk beaches, lending an extra hand to families to help keep their children safe this summer.
Sandi the Starfish was launched in 2014 - with a seafront flag for families to use as a meeting point if they are separated and special Sandi the Starfish wristbands with space to write a parent's mobile number.
Sergeant Tom Stead explained that losing a child, even momentarily, can be a terrifying experience for the whole family.
"We see lots of families who come to Cromer and Sheringham to enjoy the beaches during the summer holidays, and occasionally a child can wander off or become disorientated as they are playing. Although the vast majority of missing children are found very quickly it is still a traumatic experience for all the family.
"The idea of having a flag with a recognisable character as a meeting point for families if one of them gets lost came from PCSO Sandi Greenacre, who was a member of the Hunstanton team before she sadly died in 2013. Sandi saw how distressing losing a child can be – both for the parents and the child. She was keen to develop ways to help families reunite and advice for parents on what to do if they lose their little one.
was born. SGT Stead added.
When visiting the Norfolk coast this summer, keep an eye out for Sandi in Hunstanton, Wells, Sheringham, Cromer, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston. Wristbands are available from a variety of locations within each seaside resort.
Helpful tips for families planning a trip to the beach include: • Designate a meeting spot and make sure the whole family know to go there to wait there if you are separated. • A Sandi the Starfish flag is located on the sea front and is designed to be seen by children from a distance. Show your child the picture of Sandi so they know what to look for. • Tell your child that if they get separated from you, they should go to the flag where they can wait
• Use a Sandi the Starfish wristband, write your phone number on the inside of the wristband so you can be contacted if your child is found. • Keep an up-to-date photo of them on your phone to show to officers so they know who they are looking for. Ideally take on a phone or a digital camera when you arrive at the beach to show exactly what they are wearing. It's vital to remember what they are wearing! Bright, eye catching clothing is ideal.

HUXTABLE MOWERS TEL: (01692) 406265 Council Tax collection - best performance for a decade by North Norfolk District Council
Collection targets beaten for both Council Tax and Non-Domestic Rates The revenues and benefits team at North Norfolk District Council collected 98.7% of Council Tax and 99.36% of Non-Domestic (Business) Rates according to year-end figures for 2016/17.
The Council Tax figure is the highest percentage collected for the past 10 years and the second highest ever collected by North Norfolk District Council. The Non-Domestic (Business) Rates figure is the highest percentage collected for the past nine years and the second highest ever collected by North Norfolk District Council.
The figures mean that the council has beaten its collection targets of 98.5% and 99.2% respectively.
Cllr Wyndham Northam, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Financial Services and Revenues and Benefits, said “This is fantastic news and is a reflection of a great deal of hard work put in by the teams responsible for collecting these monies.
“This revenue collected will make a real difference at a time when resources are limited and funding is reduced.” The data has been sent to the Department for Communities and Local Government as required by the Local Government Act 1972. The collection information is due to be brought to Cabinet on 5 June, Scrutiny on 14 June and Full Council on 21 June as part of the Debt Management Annual Report.
Haydn Summer Gala
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and orchestra are delighted to be returning to the Auden Theatre, Holt for their Summer Gala Concert on Saturday 15 July at 7.30 pm.
The choir, directed by David Ballard, will perform Joseph Haydn’s lyrical oratorio The Seasons. As the title suggests this exciting work takes us on a journey through the four seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter – with lively and atmospheric music very much in the style of his earlier, and perhaps better known, oratorio The Creation. The audience will get to experience the changing scene throughout a year in mid-Europe in the early 1800s.
Zaira Palumbo The work will be sung in English – as was the original performance – using the latest libretto which allows Haydn’s original wit, humour and musical genius to shine through. The choir will be joined by 3 splendid soloists: Zaira Palumbo (soprano), Lawrence Thackeray (tenor) and Tom Appleton (bass). Prior to the concert the audience are invited to picnic on the lawns between the Auden Theatre and the new Britten Building. The bar will be open from 6.30 pm.
Lawrence Thackeray Tickets (£15 under 18’s FREE) are available now from the Auden Theatre box office telephone 01263 713444 or online at www.audentheatre.co.uk

Ever thought about gardening with seaweed? By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners Seaweed fertilisers are deceptively named as they are not true fertilisers; their nutrient content is not standardised. You can purchase dried or liquid seaweed fertilisers from local garden centres, or if you are lucky (and check with your local council/ beach owner) you might have access to fresh seaweed. Here are some possible pros and cons for you to weigh up if you want to consider bringing some seaweedy goodness into your soil: - Alginates in seaweed help to bind the soil together, and it contains a wide range of soil nutrients, including lots of trace elements.
the salt content then rinse it before use, and a good watering or rain on the ground will quickly wash out any remaining salt.
- All products have different nutrient concentrations dependent on how they were processed, so be sure to read the packaging thoroughly. Even then, however, nutrient levels are not guaranteed. - If you have access to fresh seaweed it can be dug in to flower beds without prior decomposition or used as a mulch to suppress weeds and retain water. - Seaweed products are a great source of nutrients for organic gardeners.
- Calcified seaweed can be used as an alternative to lime to increase the alkalinity of your soil, although this is often more expensive and it’s advisable to look at the source of the product to check it is sustainably obtained.
- There is a potential for high salt content in fresh seaweed which won’t be good for your plants, although this should not be a problem with commercial products. If you’re concerned about M CO RE

Blickling unveils new family-friendly multi-use trail The National Trust has opened a new all-weather, multi-use trail at Blickling that will give families the opportunity to get active and discover the wider parkland and abundant wildlife that calls it home. Officially opened on 9 June, the route at Blickling offers a new 4-mile safe off-road path through the beautiful historic park and farmland. The new trail follows existing paths for all but 800m, with a new stretch completing a circular loop that avoids roads. The all-weather surface also means more people can explore the estate whatever the season.
Stuart Banks, Countryside Manager at Blickling, said “With more families visiting Blickling, it’s important for us to provide a safe place for them to enjoy the wider estate. Cycling is an activity that the whole family can enjoy together and this provides an easy,
safe route to get them started.
“It’s a traffic-free environment, and has an all-weather surface that’s suitable for pushchairs and buggies too, so we hope families with younger children will now find it easier to explore the wider estate. It’s also suitable for adapted wheelchair users and we hope to have a mobility scooter available to hire in the coming months. The park is Grade II listed, which meant that very careful consideration had to be given to the material used for the trail’s surface.
National Trust Project Manager, Katherine Mortlock, said “Carrstone is a local stone that weathers quickly and gives a suitable surface for cyclists, walkers, runners and adapted wheelchair users. The conservation benefits of the path are already being felt and were one of the prime considerations of the project.
The new trail has enabled Blickling’s countryside team to improve and repair many areas, which had previously been muddy or pot-holed from heavy use, making the park more accessible even in the wettest weather. There was also noticeably less damage during Blickling’s recent bluebell season, with visitors keeping to the wellmarked path, protecting these native wildflowers.
The National Trust would like to thank our members, supporters, donors and visitors, without whom projects like this would not be possible. And with the trail starting and finishing at the Muddy Boots CafĂŠ in the main car park, there's lots of opportunity for a well-earned treat too.
North Walsham and District Historical Society ‘Over Here’ by Greg Powles
Greg burst into the room and immediately introduced himself as ‘James Maitland Stewart’ in a very convincing imitation of the actor’s slow drawl. Born in Indiana Pennsylvania USA. His film career began at Princestead University where he was training to be an architect. He met and followed Henry Fonda to Hollywood where he signed up to MGM Studios for the princely sum of 35 dollars a week. In 1939 he joined Frank Copra in making ‘Mr Smith goes to Washington’. At this time, he cultivated his distinctive drawl. He went on to make a further five more films and won an Academy Award. ‘The Philadelphia Story’ won him an Oscar.
Having learned to fly in 1935, on the outbreak of the WWII, he foresaw America would become involved. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1940 as a private. He applied for an Air Corps commission and Service Pilot rating as both a college graduate and a licensed commercial pilot. Soon to be 33, he was almost six years beyond the maximum age restriction for Aviation Cadet training. He was transferred to the Army Air Corps and employed making recruiting films and training other pilots to fly various military aircraft.
In August 1943, Stewart was assigned to the 445th Bomb Group as operations officer, after three weeks becoming its commander. On October 12, 1943, judged ready to go overseas.. They flew

individually via South America and Africa, to RAF Tibenham, Norfolk. He flew several missions and was promoted to Major and awarded a second Distinguish Flying Cross, Transferred to Old Buckenham and become the Group Operations Officer of the 453rd Bombardment Group. On his first combat mission a rocket missed his plane by 12ft. One of his group went astray, he broke radio silence and diverted to keep the mission together, in doing so saved lots of aircraft. He flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on several missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. Promoted to full Colonel at the end of WWII, he sailed home on the Queen Elizabeth and back in Hollywood he continued his acting career - Frank Copra persuaded him to star in the film ‘This Wonderful Life’. In 1959, he was promoted to Brigadier General. Mike Sothcott

Case Study: Making a Lasting Power of Attorney Registering the document after a Diagnosis of Dementia Once the document has been registered with
If you've been diagnosed with dementia, it's a really good idea to make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and Will as soon as possible. To highlight the process, we have provided a real life example where an LPA is made following an early diagnosis of dementia to protect a family’s interests and wishes.
Case Study – Michael Michael has recently been diagnosed with dementia. Although he often shows signs of confusion and can be forgetful, his diagnosis is at the initial stage of and is mainly unrecognisable. Michael’s daughter Emily is concerned as Michael does not have an Lasting Power of Attorney in place so no one is able to look after his finances when he is no longer able to.
GP as certificate provider on the LPA. The role of the certificate provider is to confirm that the person making the LPA understands what they are doing and signs the document to certify this.
Before Michael signs the document he would have to read through the draft document and confirm that this is what he would like to put in place. He would then see the solicitor for another appointment where they would go through the document again with Michael ensuring that he understood it.
Once Michael has signed the LPA, the solicitor will send information to the attorneys on what their responsibilities will be and ask them to sign the LPA. If they have any queries they are then able to contact the solicitor.
What can they do? A person who has been diagnosed with dementia is still able to make a Lasting Power of Attorney provided that they have capacity. The two-tier test for capacity was set out in section 2(1) of the Mental Capacity Act 2005:• Does the person have an impairment of, or a disturbance in the functioning of, the mind or brain? • Does the impairment or disturbance mean that the person is unable to make the specific decision at that time that it needs to be made?
Although dementia amounts to the impairment of the brain, if Michael is able to understand the decision to have a Lasting Power of Attorney he can fulfil this test. For the solicitor to confirm that he has capacity they must ensure that:1. Michael understands the information relevant to making a Lasting Power of Attorney 2. Is able to retain this information, and 3. Is able to use and weigh up this in formation as part of the process of making the decision to make an LPA.
Seeing your Solicitor When attending the initial appointment with the solicitor Michael is able to bring Emily with him for support however when taking Michael’s instructions she will have to leave the room to ensure that they are Michael’s instructions and he is not being unduly influenced in any way. During this initial appointment the solicitor will ensure that Michael understands the responsibility that he is giving to his attorneys and when this will come into force. During the appointment the solicitor can assess whether he has capacity to instruct them to make a Lasting Power of Attorney.
If the solicitor is unsure in any way about his capacity they can appoint his
the Office of the Public Guardian the solicitor will provide Michael with 2 certified copies of the LPA which he will be able to give to his attorneys. Emily is therefore assured that when Michael’s dementia worsens he has a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and has the certified copy to take to Michael’s bank to allow her access to his finances.
If you have been diagnosed with Dementia, you may also wish to get advice on writing your will.

Rabbit Awareness Week
The 17th of June marks the start of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), and is a timely reminder to raise some of the summertime issues that we commonly encounter at the vets.
For the rabbit owners out there the RAW website is a great source of information on how to keep and feed your rabbit as husbandry issues account for most of the problems we see here at the vets. It is vital that your rabbit’s diet is made up predominantly of 80-95% roughage such as grass or hay. This ensures that they wear their teeth down properly to avoid dental

problems and provides them with the correct amount of fibre to ensure their delicate gastrointestinal tract is properly maintained. Although rabbits love sweet treats and pellet food, feeding too much of these can cause serious problems so should be avoided. Treating them with dandelion leaves and leafy greens is a much safer option.
Summer is unfortunately also the time that we see a high number of cases of fly strike. This is where flies lay their eggs in the rabbit’s fur, usually areas which are moist or dirty, making the tail and bottom most commonly affected. These eggs hatch into maggots which then eat away at the flesh, rapidly leading to infection and shock. It is a horrible condition that unfortunately can happen very quickly indeed. The best ways to avoid it are to keep your rabbit clean and
not overweight, so they are able to wash themselves, and to check their back end on a daily basis. There are also long lasting forms of fly repellent available from your vet that further reduce the likelihood of them being fly struck.
Aside from flystrike, we do also still see cases of myxomatosis and another life threatening condition known as viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). Both of these conditions can be vaccinated against, so if you have rabbits and they are not yet vaccinated I would recommend giving your local vets a call and booking them in!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When I last spoke to our friend catching the feral cats he advised that the previous week the four that went into the cat traps had already been neutered, easily identified having been ear tipped. He had also managed to catch two more that week and was hopeful that more would be caught soon.
As most of you will be aware, after taking in cats and finding them loving new homes, one of our main aims is to promote neutering. As well as offering vouchers to people on low income and benefit, on receipt of £5 we do still issue the fixed term voucher for other owners who need help with the cost of the operation. The vouchers are always issued direct to the vets concerned and forwarded to our Head Office for payment once the operation has taken place. Head Office then issue cheques on a monthly basis to all the vets concerned and advise us that payment will be taken from our Current Account within a set amount of time. This ensures we know how much will be taken and gives us time to transfer money if we need to do so. Our statement for May indicates that payments totalling roughly £6,000. have been made so far this year. This amount does not include operations taking place in May and any more that are in the pipeline. We urge people to continue to contact our neutering line to find out what help is available to them.
As all charities involved in cat rescue are aware, there are already far too many unwanted cats out there, many having been neglected and not receiving the care they deserve. By ensuring there are not so many unwanted cats and kittens, we can all help more of the cats that need help because of changes in their families’ circumstances. Very often the original cats that move to industrial sites have been abandoned/neglected by their owners and, because they have not been neutered, a colony quickly forms and we are left with the problems recently experienced where our friend works.
Plans are now going ahead for the Hog Roast at Dilham, which this year will be held on Sunday 9 July. Tickets are now available and, despite inflation, the price remains the same. If you would like to join us on the North Walsham Times 521 June 17th 2017

Sporting Centre of Excellence set to enter second year
First year pilot project produced high quality results North Norfolk District Council’s project to create a Sporting Centre of Excellence has been a huge success and is set to enter a second year.
The first year pilot project saw more than 70 young people aged 11 to 14 attending 24 weeks of coaching at Gresham’s School in Holt. They were given specialist coaching across four sports - hockey, netball, cricket and running. The project has been funded by NNDC and supported through the council’s sports and leisure team. It has been hosted by Gresham’s, which has high quality sporting facilities.
Successes included • Nine athletes selected to represent Norfolk in cross country
24
• A haul of medals at the Norfolk Track and Field Championships at the UEA Sportspark recently which included four golds, three silver and two bronze • Three cricketers picked for county squad training sessions • One hockey player spotted as a naturally gifted goalkeeper and invited to join a top Norfolk club • Two netball players invited to join a high standard team All participants showed improvement.
The aim of the project is to recruit young people with the potential to excel in a sport and give them an excellent coaching experience and the opportunity to achieve their sporting dreams.
Cllr Maggie Prior, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said “Year one has been a resounding success both in terms of individual success and in terms of the whole group improving their skills and abilities. The project has demonstrated a great need to deliver high quality sports coaching to the young people of North Norfolk, bridging a gap between participation and performance. Sport England has said the project is innovative and shows good practice, so there is formal recognition from the experts that this is a fantastic scheme.” All of the district’s secondary schools have had representation in the scheme.
If you would like to take part in the selection trials for the coaching sessions, or nominate someone to do so, please contact Wyn Nurse on 01263 516035.
North Walsham Times 521 June 17th 2017
on the last Sunday in May.
The season came to its traditional end at Scottow with the Dardan Security Sevens (pictured) and Beer Festival
A large crowd enjoyed seven hours of non-stop rugby and a lot more. Harwich & Dovercourt Owls won the Women's Cup, and Porky Blinders the Men's.
Reviewing the Vikings' season Head of Rugby James Brooks was encouraged by their progress. There were five more wins than 2015 -16 and a two place rise to fourth in the League. Supporters saw a more resilient side, defensively stronger, better at taking their chances and closing games out. Scoring 40% more points, they earned 16 try scoring bonus points, a 60% improvement and conceded four or more tries only four times. Brooks was particularly encouraged by performances against
the top three. "Tring were worthy champions and their coaches regarded us as the best team they'd played."
He is looking for further improvement next season. A larger squad to increase competition and guard against injuries is a priority. Only Jono Lawson and Ethan Benney are known to be leaving, both returning to New Zealand. Player of the Year Lawson leaves a big gap in the second row. The Club are committed to developing local talent so, whilst casting his net wide, Brooks is particularly looking for local players wanting to play at a higher level. "Jordan Mustard moved up three leagues from Swaffham, so it can be done. North Walsham is a very welcoming Club and they would be joining a great bunch of players."
HOLT NISSAN DEALERSHIP WINS COVETED GLOBAL AWARD
A YEAR of outstanding sales and customer care has earned a Holt Nissan dealership the coveted Nissan Global Award — the company’s highest worldwide award. Crayford & Abbs, on Gypsies Lane, was one of just three UK dealerships to win the award.
01692 615634 / 07970044599
It is the first time the dealership, which is known for its extensive charity work, has won the prize.
Director Kevin Abbs, who recently was invited to Buckingham Palace for the first Garden Party of the year for his charity work, received the award on behalf of the dealership from Nissan Motor GB’s Managing Director, Alex Smith, last week.
Alex said: “I’m delighted to present this Nissan Global Award 2017 to Crayford and Abbs. It’s the highest honour Nissan gives to its dealer partners around the world and recognises them for delivering a great overall performance and excellent customer service. So few dealers ever win it and so this really does go to show what a fantastic job Kevin and the team at Crayford and Abbs have been doing and they should all feel very proud of this achievement.”
Kevin said: “We always wanted to be the best we could be and have strived to achieve number one status — and it feels fantastic to say we now are! It’s testament to the teamwork of our staff and our brilliantly loyal customer base, and I want to thank them all for making this possible.”
To find out more about the Nissan range at Crayford & Abbs, visit their dealership on Gypsies Lane, Bodham, Holt, or call 01263 588160.

North Walsham Table Tennis Season concludes with glimpse of the future
The last action of the season saw Aylsham Enterprise beat Poachers 5-3 in the final of the Handicap Singles Cup and that was followed by the now traditional Junior Championships. Phil Mole reports:-
The annual Youth Tournament of the League was held at North Walsham Sports Centre. In total there were 24 players from Aylsham, Mundesley and North Walsham Table Tennis Clubs organised into two competitions – one for League players (under 18s) and one for non-League players (under 16s). The non-League players were organised into two groups on a round robin basis where everyone played two sets up to 11 against the rest of their groups, gaining three points for a win and one for a draw. The winners of each group were Thomas Mountain and Jim Crossley and they faced each other in a brilliant final, played over the best of three sets. Jim took the first on the golden point with intelligent defensive play, but Thomas came back to win the next two sets with powerful hitting on both his forehand and backhand. The two runners-up in each group should have been able to compete with Thomas and Jim in semi-finals, but it was impossible to separate a number of players in each group who had performed really well. There was also not enough time to hold semi-finals. Those who came close to being runners-up should congratulate themselves for getting so close to Thomas and Jim after quite a demanding set of fixtures. Overall the standard of play, commitment and behaviour of everyone who took part was impressive and all the players should take a great deal of credit for making the afternoon such a success. There were many stand-out performers but a special mention should go to Maisie Crossley who won the trophy for the most improved player

The quality of the table tennis played on this table was very high with Ben Lester, Fletcher Dyson and Thomas pushing Harley and James all the way. Congratulations go to all of them. Earlier in the evening Pat announced that next year will be her 25th and final year overseeing the annual Championships.
