Swim Safe - don’t get caught in a Rip

Advice issued by the RNLI Happisburgh following the tragic events at Sea Palling last year.

Rip Currents are strong currents running out to sea. They can take you from the shallows very quickly and leave you out of your depth.

If you are caught in a Rip: • Stay calm, don’t panic • If you can stand, wade – don’t try to swim • If you have an inflatable or board, keep hold of it to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help loudly • Don’t swim directly against the Rip or you will get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the Rip, then make for the shore For more information on Rip Currents go to www.ripcurrents.co.uk

Sleepless Night for Happisburgh Lifeboat Crew Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action at 2am on 2 July to reports of a missing swimmer at the back of reef two Sea Palling.

The crew were quickly out Happisburgh Atlantic 85 of their beds and the Station’s Howard Bell B-899 Atlantic 85 Howard Bell was on her way to Sea Palling with Tim Grimmer at the helm and crew of Cubitt Siely and Sam Gillard.

This was the first call out for the Howard Bell since arriving at the station in May this year - Tim Grimmer said “at first they were going to take the Station’s D class Lifeboat, but due to it being high tide with a strong ground swell it was not safe to launch”.

En route to Sea Palling they received an update that three people had gone swimming from a camp on the beach but only two had returned to the beach. Happisburgh Lifeboat carried out a shoreline search from Happisburgh to reef one at Sea Palling. They were joined by Sea Palling Lifeboat but after some time the crew were informed by the Coastguard that the missing person had been found safe and well.

The crew returned to Station, arriving back at 3.25am - the boat was recovered and ready for service again at 4am and the crew returned to their beds. Tim Grimmer said “the crew and I were very pleased with the way the new boat had handled and operated on its first service”.

It is never safe to swim in the sea at night, as you lose your bearings very quickly and can get swept away by the tide before you know it. It is also harder for the rescue services to find you. The best advice for swimmers is to always swim between the flags on life-guarded beaches or if this is not possible to always have someone ashore who is able to call for help if anything goes wrong.

FOUR DAYS OF FUN!

Treat yourself .........

2017 saw the welcome return of the ‘carnival’ style weekend.

Neil R Storey returned to his beloved North Walsham to enthral us with ‘Tales of Walsham’ in a manner that only Neil can deliver – ‘captivating’ is a word that was used by many of those who attended.

Razz & Auntie Pearl entertained the young ones in the marquee at the Family Fun Night, with the help of characters from Arnie's Attic. North Walsham Football Club hosted a football tournament at Greens Road, which was another success with ‘Walsham Willies’ winning the shield. We hope they realise that they have to come back next year to defend their title!

Beer & Bands exceeded all expectations. Detour, City of Stories, The Streamlines, Helen Bluebelle, Raw Edge & The Casemakers all gave their time freely to support this fantastic afternoon/night. Lots of memories

Rare flower blooms again near North Walsham

Naturalists are celebrating the return of a rare sight for Norfolk - an endangered wildflower is once again blooming at two sites near North Walsham thanks to a new project made possible by National Lottery players through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Local volunteers from the North Walsham Conservation Group, run by The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), have been working along two of the Norfolk Trails long-distance footpaths - the Paston Way and the Weavers Way – to stop the rare Small-flowered Catchfly from being shaded out by brambles.

The Small-flowered Catchfly (Silene gallica) is a type of campion, which grows on disturbed ground, which at these two sites is provided by rabbits burrowing into the sand. It has declined rapidly in recent decades, largely due to changing agricultural practices, so refuges like this are crucial to its survival in Britain. Once there were dozens of trains a day passing through now abandoned stations at these sites, but now anyone can walk along the old track beds to see the delicate wildflowers near the car parks at Felmingham and Knapton.

The North Walsham Conservation Group provides weekly opportunities for people in the North Walsham and Aylsham areas to meet new friends and learn new skills at any of a series of sessions which run each Wednesday afternoon. There are a mixture of practical

tasks (such as protecting orchids and rebuilding old railway fences) with learning to identify plants, animals and hidden features of the old railway. Participants do not need to be physically fit or have any previous experience – anyone over 18 can join in (16-17 year olds with parental permission). There is a free minibus from convenient points in Aylsham and North Walsham so that people without their own transport can join in too.

As well as conserving wildlife, the group are also working at the old Honing station near Briggate, which features a wide variety of very well preserved features, including platforms and the remains of several buildings, which are in danger of being overcome by vegetation. The aim here is to help the Norfolk Trails and the Norfolk Railway Heritage Group preserve the site and present it to the public.

TCV is an organisation which works every day across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where the activities have a lasting impact on people's health, prospects and outdoor places. Mark Webster, TCV’s Norfolk Health Projects Officer, said: “I was so delighted to walk west along the Weavers Way from the old Felmingham station and see the Small-flowered Catchfly in full bloom all over the open grassy areas. It’s

North Walsham Times 523 July 22nd 2017

great to see this species respond to positive habitat management: all of the group are really pleased to see it come back from the brink of disappearing from these sites. They may be small, but they are really beautiful!”

The project is supported through a £52,700 National Lottery grant through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF East of England, said: “It’s wonderful that this rare plant once again has the chance to bloom along the old railway lines near North Walsham – a fantastic example of how natural heritage and industrial heritage can be seen side by side. This was made possible by money raised by National Lottery players and the volunteers who worked hard on this project should be very proud of their success.”

Anyone wanting further information or a programme of activities should contact Mark on 07843 069 567 or m.webster@tcv.org.uk. More details about the activities can be found at www.tcv.org.uk/norfolk

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM North Walsham in Bloom had a very good Spring Planting fortnight, culminating in an excellent ‘After Planting Lunch’ at the Norwich Road Garden Centre.

We consider these lunches vital to review any problems we may have come across during the planting of some 1400 plants. There may be some things we could have done better.

We ourselves think the town has never looked better, and the towers and tubs this year are particularly spectacular.

Britain’s Most Expensive Divorce Lawyer and the Need for Pre-Nuptial Agreements

The Daily Mail recently ran an article on Ayesha Vardag who acted for the German heiress Katrin Radmacher in Neale Grearson 2010. This was the case that protected Miss Radmacher’s £100 million fortune from her ex-husband Nicolas Granatino because of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement they had entered into. This was a radical change in British divorce law since when the Courts have been much more willing to uphold Pre-Nuptial Agreements.

With the rate of divorces in this country now approaching 1 in 2 the significance and future importance of Pre-Nuptial Agreements has never been greater. For a couple getting married at an early stage in their lives when their financial positions are roughly equal they might conclude that a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is not necessary. For those that might be entering into a second marriage or have inherited wealth earlier in their life Pre-Nuptial Agreements become very important and arguably vital. The Daily Mail quotes Ayesha as saying that “it is like thinking you don’t need fire insurance because your house won’t ever burn down” and that is a fair analogy. The discussion between an engaged couple about having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement may be a difficult one but arguably a Pre-Nuptial Agreement should be part of the pre wedding planning list along with booking a venue and ordering flowers. Is that an over materialistic approach or reality?

The increase in the divorce rate is not necessarily because marriages are less stable. The reality however is that everyone is living longer and during a marriage people do fall out of love with one another. Each (or both) spouses change and it is not an admission of failure to accept that. Making a Will is now accepted as essential (although scarily not everybody does have a Will). Lasting Powers of Attorney are catching up but are still not as widely used as should be the case. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are the next big growth area because in very uncertain North Walsham Times 523 July 22nd 2017

times and the fear of what might happen on a divorce they are likely to become an even more essential part of pre-marriage planning. In fact there is an argument to say that with a Pre-Nuptial Agreement a couple should be even more confident about getting married as the fear about what might happen on a divorce and the financial repercussions is going to be safeguarded against.

The work of divorce lawyers could reduce substantially if everybody had a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Rather like lawyers earning more money from disputes over Wills where they are not drawn up correctly (or there being no Will at all). Without a Pre-Nuptial Agreement the danger is that a divorcing couple are left in the hands of a Judge with ultimate discretion and no guarantee as to how such things as inherited wealth or pre-owned assets should be taken into account. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are not yet completely enforceable and there is still no legislation to give them formal status but if a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is objectively “fair” and the following three “rules” are carried out the starting point should be that the Pre-Nuptial Agreement is enforceable and it would be for the person opposing it to show good reason why it should not be upheld:

1. Both of the couple take independent advice from a Solicitor. 2. There is an exchange of financial information so that each knows what the other is worth. 3. The Agreement is not entered into too close to the marriage and usually this should be more than 28 days beforehand.

There will always need to be provision for a change or at least a review should there be a fundamental alteration in the situation. In particular if the couple have children that could be a “deal changer” so there does need to be careful drafting of the Agreement.

A summer of sporting activities

Archery, street dance, multi-sports and football among a wide range of sports and activities on offer for youngsters this summer.

A huge range of children's activities will be on offer at North Norfolk District Council-managed community sports centres during the Summer school holidays. The sessions will offer healthy and fun activities for youngsters aged between 4 and 12 years.

Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham sports centres have drawn up their diary of activities, which can be viewed on Facebook, via the North Norfolk District Council website and on leaflets being distributed to local schools.

Activities begin on 24 July and run through to 1 September. Costs range from £3.50 for shorter sessions to £10 for all day sessions. Many of the days feature early drop off and late pick up if parents need to work, meaning wrap around care is often available from 8am to 4.30pm.

North Norfolk District Council is also offering beach events at Cromer, Sea Palling and the Runtons, countryside events at Holt Country Park, Sadlers Wood and Pretty Corner Woods, and the fifth annual Fun Day Out at Pretty Corner Woods.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure Health and Wellbeing, said “Whether your child is a trampolining or football fan, or they want to try something new, it is well worth looking at the long list of activities being made available. We’re delighted to be able to offer our community these sessions, which will be run by qualified and dedicated staff, at really affordable prices.”

Tickets can be booked via www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/book or call the sports centres Cromer 01263 515669; North Walsham 01692 402293; Stalham 01692 580864.

FREE TASTER SESSION WITH VOICEMALE

Voicemale is a friendly bunch of men who love to sing together. Not a male voice choir in the conventional sense, we have an exciting and eclectic repertoire from many traditions, including African-American Gospel music, and folk songs from Corsica, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Wales, Georgia and the Basque country. All our songs are unaccompanied and we learn them by ear, so there’s no need to read music, although sometimes this is available for those who want it. We’re led by Stephanie Anderson, who also leads Trinity Broads Singers and Scunsulata.

We meet in Aylsham on Saturday mornings - usually the 2nd, 4th and 5th Saturday of the month. After our summer break, we will be starting the new season with a free Taster Session on Saturday 9 September at the

Summer Solstice Yoga for Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund

Vee Zappia and Debbie Mason organised another Open Air Yoga event at Felbrigg Hall Estate to celebrate the summer solstice, which is when the sun reaches its peak in the sky creating the longest day and shortest night. It is a time to join together and celebrate.

This was a charity event in aid of The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK. A total of £400 was raised in just one hour.

Ellen’s grandmother attended and gave a small speech explaining about the charity. This was very emotional for her and touched everyone's hearts - it was a truly magical practise in surroundings so beautiful.

A big thank you goes out to all that helped and attended. There will be another at the same venue in September to celebrate the autumn equinox and to raise money for this local charity. Vee has been teaching yoga for 12 years and runs classes in various venues locally Her contact details are: Veronicazappia@hotmail.co.uk 07899 894581.

Norfolk Coast Bio Blitz

A partnership including the National Trust, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Natural England and the Holkham Estate, supported by the Norfolk Coast Partnership, have joined forces to undertake a BioBlitz of the North Norfolk Coast - a race against time to identify and record as many species as possible along the coast over a 24 hour period from Holme-next-the-Sea to Salthouse.

There are lots of fun ways in which to get involved and help with this landmark event, with no previous experience or knowledge necessary.

Friends

If you should need an angel Don’t sigh and search the skies, In truth they’re all about you Though often in disguise.

For, knowing that life’s burdens Are sometimes hard to bear, And seeing too that we might need A hand, just here and there.

Some providence took pity and, As though to make amends, Scattered angels on the earth And simply called them ‘friends’. Tricia Sturgeon

Raising a magnificent £800 towards the Save Itteringham Village Shop fund, the evening of music and song celebrated many female composers. Local Ambassadors Helping Politicians in the Fight Against Cancer

Whilst scientists look to find a cure, and amazing volunteers raise thousands of pounds for charity, local people have found a new way to help in the fight against cancer.

Nearly 300 people of all ages and walks of life across the country have joined Cancer Research UK’s Ambassador Programme. This branch of the charity involves a group of passionate volunteers, some of whom have a close experience of cancer, writing to and chatting to MPs, engaging in promotion online and on social media, to try to improve public health policy and help to beat cancer sooner.

The Ambassadors have been involved in campaigns to prevent cancer, and to keep it high on the government’s agenda. For example, they were involved in promoting plain packaging for tobacco, protecting children from sunbeds and protecting local stop smoking services.

Ryan Devlin, a student from Cromer and Ambassador in Edinburgh and North Norfolk, said “I joined the Ambassadors in November and am absolutely loving it. I was a bit apprehensive to start off with, but I’m part of a group of wonderful, friendly people who helped me to focus my efforts and develop my skills in speaking and writing. Plus it only takes a couple of hours a fortnight, so I could easily fit it around my studies.”

The Ambassadors are recruiting in North Norfolk now, so if you want to get involved, or want to learn a little more visit cruk.org/ambassadors, e-mail campaigning@cancer.org.uk or call on 07795 334929.

By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners

There’s a fun new craze all about making your food not only taste great, but look picture perfect too. People are finding ingenious ways to bring that flare and extra colour, and a large number of innovative home-chefs are decorating with edible flowers.

Now, of course, eating flowers is certainly not a new concept, but I’ve been seeing some great ways to incorporate them into your dinner party, or simply posh up your granola to give you a morning perk.

Putting flowers into ice cubes preserves their colour and shape and look fantastic dropped into a celebratory glass of something fizzy. This works well with the cucumber flavoured borage flowers in some chilled Pimms. Some people might choose to save time by simply floating fresh flowers atop a punch bowl.

VIPs get virtual reality tour of new housing scheme at Trunch in north Norfolk Guests celebrated the start of building work at Broadland Housing’s new scheme at Trunch earlier this month with a high-tech 3D preview, using new pilot technology, of how it will look when it’s finished – and the future of the construction industry.

Housing and the design team will provide the best opportunity to deliver this project to the quality and standard it deserves. The design from Ingleton Wood is both innovative and sympathetic to its surroundings - it has been great to see the ACCEPT 3D technology in action at the turf-turning today and it will be an added benefit during the building process. We look forward to working in A screenshot of one of the 3D north Norfolk and contributing models accessed from the towards the local community ACCEPT Project technology in Trunch.”

The Cornish Avenue scheme comprises 12 affordable homes: a mix of 3-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 1-bedroom houses, plus a 1-bedroom bungalow. The scheme design reflects traditional rural settlements in north Norfolk, with houses grouped informally and a green open space overlooking rural scenery beyond. Broadland Development Services will be carrying out the work, in association with architects Ingleton Wood and builders John Youngs. The scheme will be completed in 2018. Around 30 guests attended the turf-turning event, including representatives from North Norfolk District Council, the parish council, Ingleton Wood, John Youngs and Broadland Housing Association Board members. Michael Newey, Group Chief Executive, Broadland Housing, said “Affordable housing is vital for the survival of our rural communities and services. This innovative new scheme offers a lifeline to local people, making it possible for them to live near their families, friends and places of work.” Cllr Richard Price, North Norfolk District Council’s portfolio holder for housing, said “It’s especially fitting that we celebrate the start of works to build these new homes in Rural Housing Week. This housing scheme will deliver vital new affordable homes to meet the local housing need of Trunch and the adjoining parishes of Gimingham, Knapton, Mundesley, Southrepps and Swafield.” Visitors accessed stunning 3D panoramas of the new affordable housing scheme using a world-first Google Tango prototype device. They could also ‘view’ individual properties by scanning QR codes on posts dotted around the site, and try on smart glasses to view a sample instructional video for construction workers. Ed Godden, Scheme Architect at Ingleton Wood and Project Manager for the ACCEPT project, explained how this European Horizon 2020-funded project to develop this new set of apps for use on construction sites will improve overall quality and knowledge transfer.

Broadland Housing sites will pilot the new ACCEPT technology in real-life applications and provide valuable feedback, starting with Trunch.

Ed said “Communication is a critical part of the construction process. For centuries, architects, contractors and craftsmen have relied on paper drawings and site meetings, but the ACCEPT project is now working with people across the industry to bring the industry into the 21st century. Smartphones, tablets and wearable technologies like smart glasses will make it easier than ever for site workers to access design information. The effects will be significant - higher quality and more energy-efficient buildings.”

James Phillips, General Manager of John Youngs, added “Building relationships and working collaboratively with Broadland

North Walsham & District Historical Society Surprises from our own Collections A series of short talks given by our members

Mike Sothcott - “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” Mike visited New Orleans while serving onboard HMS Hermes in 1980. Mardi Gras means ‘Fat Tuesday’ and dates back to 1883. It takes place across the USA in the two weeks leading up to Ash Wednesday. In the final five days, one major parade takes place in the city each day. It consists of both highly decorated floats, also pedestrians lavishly dressed often with frames built into costumes to extend their dress. Participants often wear masks, those on the floats frequently toss ‘throws’ such as plastic bead necklaces, aluminium doubloons, plastic toys etc, into the watching crowd. Mike and his wife saw many parades, one taking three hours to pass.

On the final day, many of the spectators dressed in bazaar costumes as well, such as a nun with a beard smoking a cigar and carrying bottles of beer. Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, which has many bars and clip joints and is inhabited by Transvestites in lavish costumes, (rather like Danny La Rue wore on stage) had their own parade. The crowd was so dense it took you in one direction only.

The Mardi Gras Parades are organised and paid for by social clubs called Krewes, led by a King, the most prominent is King Rex, usually a leading businessman. The officers of HMS Hermes were invited to his ball, a DJ and black tie affair. The ball is a pageant in which ‘His Majesty Rex and Her Majesty the Queen’ (an attractive young unmarried woman), assisted by maids and dukes

in costume, presided over the evening, at which the debutants of the city are presented by their young male escorts to the King and Queen (rather like our Queen Charlotte’s Ball). At midnight the streets are rapidly cleared and cleaned for the beginning of Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent.

Joe Collier - “Donald Trump” Donald Trump’s grandfather, Frederick Trump, emigrated to the USA in 1859 during the Alaskan Gold rush, amassing a fortune by opening restaurants and hotels for gold seekers en route to the region. His son Frederick, married Elisabeth Christ from Stornoway, Isle Lewis. By using the money his father left, he become one of the biggest real estate developers in New York City. He and his mother amassed a 20 million dollar fortune by building houses. His mother kept asking the US government for more money than they needed, a total of 4 million dollars, thus founding the ‘Trump Organisation’.

Donald was born in 1946. As a youth, he mixed with a very rough crowd, showing a non caring outlook in getting his own way. He has married thrice and has four adult children from two of his previous marriages. On divorcing his second wife, he demanded the return of all presents and jewellery. Barbara Hankin - “Things Collected” Barbara presented a miscellanea of items that she had gathered over many years. She showed us a ‘pitch pipe’, used for tuning church organs, a

‘top hat shaper’, ‘Hokie Pokie’ gloves for handling ice cream sample pots making the sample look larger than it really was, a William IV truncheon used between 1830 to 1837, a wooden Judy doll from a ‘Punch and Judy show’ and finally a wooden chair used by Mrs Woods who attended George VI 1911 Coronation.

Connie Haddrell- “Living on a House Boat” In the 1960s Connie lived in Kent with her husband, an ex Merchant Navy officer, who had given up the sea. One day he suggested the family should have a holiday on the Norfolk Broads. They rented a boat called ‘The Pine’ and had such a lovely time, they decided to move into a bungalow in Rochester Marina where they had a small dinghy on the River Medway. He then suggested finding a boat to live on permanently. So, the search for a boat began, stretching over several months. Eventually they found a large white boat, an ex Air Sea Rescue Launch built for service during WWII. It was nicely fitted out, complete with two large diesel engines, so they moved onboard. It was a great life for her daughters, who learned to sail and navigate. Unfortunately, while moving onboard she fell off the gang plank into the ‘oozy’mud but fortunately it was low tide and her husband found her and dragged her out of the mud, where he promptly cleaned her up by hosing her down. It took three baths to make her look and smell human again. That was the first of many adventures and disasters to follow.

The subject of the next speaker on 7 September is ‘Cappadocia’. Mike Sothcott

New ‘Forget Me Not Club’ opens in Lessingham

Five years of planning, fundraising and redevelopment of Lessingham Methodist Chapel came together as the first meeting of the Lessingham Methodist Forget Me Not Group took place at the Chapel in June.

The Club is for people living with dementia and their carers and offers the opportunity for volunteers, members and their carers to share in fun activities together and for the carers to have a short time apart. Dementia Champion, Anita Miles, together with volunteer Dorothy Dodson, were available to speak privately with the carers to give both help and information as well as a listening ear. Speakers are being arranged for the Carers and information from a number of different sources is available

Members and carers have lunch together with the volunteers and the Group ends in the early afternoon with a sing-song together.

On the morning of the first meeting, Charlotte Marsters brought her own expertise as a skilled masseuse and gave hand and neck massages to members of the Club and carers. Other special activities are planned for the coming months. Activities for the members include dominoes, velcro darts, knitting, card making, jig saws, book browsing, memory boxes and, most importantly, conversation. Lunch was served and eaten together in a happy atmosphere with much shared laughter and the meeting finished with a singalong, including ‘When I’m sixty-four’ and ‘Show

Me the Way to Go Home’

The Forget Me-Not Club is built on the vision of members of Lessingham Methodist Chapel who strongly feel the need to offer something special to the local community from this beautifully refurbished building. The vision was supported by the Lay Pastor, Ros Peedle, who has gathered together an enthusiastic band of volunteers. Preparations for the start of the Group have been several months in the making and amongst other things have included extensive training of our team of volunteers in areas such as dementia awareness and safeguarding. The team includes professional carers as well as people with first hand experience of living with a loved one with dementia.

All volunteers - Trevor Fiddy, Rodney Mason, Margaret Bloom, Jane Mayhew, Chris McCrohon, Ros Peedle (cutting cake), Mary Mason, Dorothy Dodson and Anita Miles

please contact Ros Peedle on 01692 405591 or email ros.peedle@live.co.uk

The group will meet regularly on the third Thursday of the month. Numbers in the Group are limited but there are a few places left so please contact the Lay Pastor for more information.

If anyone is interested in membership, can offer any help or services or wishes to become a volunteer,

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

On 8th July we had another very enjoyable day at the Hog Roast at Stephanie’s home. As it was a lovely day the party tents this year provided welcome relief from the sun rather than, as on some occasions, offering shelter from the rain. It was lovely to share the day with our friends and fellow cat lovers and for them to have the opportunity to see some of the cats in our care. We would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the day a success but especially Stephanie and Andrea on the catering front and Kenny and Brian for putting the party tents up.

When responding to requests for help with neutering, we often get calls from people who have purchased their pet via one of the websites offering animals for sale. We hear of instances where people have taken a cat or kitten into their homes only to find that they have health issues as the animals have not been to the vets for a health check. They also find that the kitten is much younger than they were advised and should still be with its mother. We also see cats and kittens for sale at ridiculous prices because of their colour, breed, etc, while an identical cat or kitten may be offered for much less because the owner has not been able to find it a new home. For those looking for a pedigree pet, I would suggest they make sure they see the relevant paperwork giving the animal’s parentage and ensure that they receive the registration forms confirming its pedigree. For all other cats please bear in mind that most charities charge the same adoption fee irrespective of colour or breed. Cats’ Protection Advocacy Department, together with other animal welfare charities, are working hard to try and get changes in the law, which is one of the reasons we do monitor the activities taking place on these sites and can advise them accordingly.

Here at Westover Vets we are fortunate to be one of only a very small number of practices in Norfolk with access to keyhole surgery.

Otherwise known as laparoscopy, it involves the use of delicate instruments and small cameras to perform surgery through tiny holes in the abdomen (see photo). The advantages for our patients are huge. Research has shown key hole spaying is 70% less painful than traditional techniques, there is also less trauma associated with the surgery, which reduces the risks and speeds the recovery process. This is probably why key hole surgery is the first choice for human medicine. Having performed both techniques for a number of years I can say that there is little debate over which has the greater benefits, but this is not its only use in our pets.

In fact, we also utilise the technique to obtain biopsies of abdominal organs, particularly in patients with liver disease. Liver disease itself varies hugely in its severity and how it presents, but often the only way to get real information about the liver is to obtain a biopsy. For many people the idea of putting their pet through open surgical biopsies and the recovery period that follows is too much. However, we can obtain key hole biopsies far more quickly, less invasively and with fewer risks and the results we have obtained have enabled us to accurately and quickly treat our patients with liver disease. Not all conditions are curable, but we have recently treated a beautiful eight year old female Labrador who has completely recovered from her liver condition following accurate diagnosis.

If you would like any more information regarding key hole spays for your female dog or regarding any other condition, then do not hesitate to contact the surgery on 01692 403202.

and we do help if we can. However, as our pens are usually full and we always have a waiting list, it is highly unlikely that we will be able to take the cat in straight away or, in some instances, because of the timescale, not at all. Although Stephanie always explains the situation in detail and tries her best to help, either by putting the cat on our waiting list or offering alternative solutions, some people can only see the situation from their point of view and can be very rude. Please bear in Bailey came into care when her owner mind if you are ever in this situation, that we are moved and could not volunteers and there is only so much we can do. take her with her If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). Preparations for the new season are well advanced right across the Club.

The adult sides started training three weeks ago with the focus on fitness. Skipper Ryan Oakes is pictured leading by example. Head of Rugby James Brooks was pleased that 35 attended the first session, a few new faces amongst them. Increasing the squad's size is important if the Vikings are going to build upon their impressive fourth place finish in 2016 -17.

The main season begins for the Youth and Minis on Sunday 3 September but training is already underway for the Colts and Under 16s squads. Also, starting 23 July, there are fitness training and touch rugby sessions at Scottow every other Sunday. Newcomers are most welcome, no need to have played rugby before, just turn up for a 10am start. The Club is again hosting a Leicester Tigers Rugby Camp - this year it is week commencing 7 August.
