Community Archive Exhibition Continued from front cover...
The success of the group has allowed us access to the extensive collections of local photographer Fred Mace, the archives of the North Walsham Historical Society, collections from renowned historians and members of the archive group Mike Ling, Brian Hedge and David Ling as well as many private collections shared by the generous and enthusiastic members of the public.
Central to this year's exhibition, by popular request, we aim to focus on industries in North Walsham, to include organisations most of us have either worked at or know people who have worked at, such as The Steam Laundry, The Canning Factory, Crane Fruehauf, The Cottage Hospital, public houses and shops. As always, we will have facilities on site for providing a 'while you wait' service of capturing any interesting additions to the archive that visitors may be able to bring along. In the past this has been a highly successful way of growing the North Walsham Archive and the group are grateful for any contributions, as are members of our Facebook community who cannot make it to our exhibition and can enjoy the photos online.
We are delighted that, once again, Barry Holden will be presenting his very popular collection of ‘Then and Now’ photographs. Barry has taken images from our archive group and, using his lifetime of local knowledge, revisited the spots where the photos were taken to re-photograph them today and display them side-by-side to give those of us not lucky enough to see the original view, a clear understanding of past layouts of the town. Barry’s collection is growing all the time so even if you have seen it before there are guaranteed to be new and interesting photos added in the meantime. This has been a fascinating addition to our Facebook group now available to see all together in one place.
The archive group is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers with the aim of collecting the town’s history and making it available for everybody. We do this via our lively Facebook group at
www.facebook.com/groups/NorthWalshamArchive and via our dedicated website at
www.northwalshamarchive.co.uk
and you can contact us via either websites. We are always interested in adding to the collection and do not keep originals, we just borrow them to scan so we can share them with the community and keep them safe for future generations. Please get in touch if you think you may have something of interest.
Entry has been free in the past with costs being covered by requesting voluntary donations by visitors, but this year we have opted to request a £1 donation as entry fee, rather than rattling the cans at visitors. As a group, we felt this entry fee was small enough to be affordable by everybody and guarantee future exhibitions making our annual exhibition more sustainable. We appreciate the public's support on this.

From Muffins to Macmillan
The Eco Club at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham decided they wanted to raise money for a worthy cause - their aim was to make a difference in the community and help people.
They unanimously decided on Macmillan Nurses.
Twenty one pupils from years 5 and 6, who are learning Latin, entered this year’s competition, with various entries in art or creative writing. Every year the entries had either born a winner or a runner up but this year Millfield was delighted to receive the news that they had four ‘Runners Up’ Prizes and a ‘Special Prize’ awarded. They were also awarded a Whole School Prize (Runners-up) for the best set of entries.
The three art category prizes went to Xi Wang, James Weston and Isla Harrison. Anya Quinn won a runners up prize in the creative writing category for a play script, which was written using both Latin and English. The judges commented on how ‘detailed, well thought out and sophisticated’ the play script was. Helen Maidment won a Special Prize in creative writing, for her story told from many perspectives of Demeter and Persephone. The judges also commented saying, ‘A complex piece with sophisticated vocabulary which is well used and each character has a distinctive voice. A very well-written piece.’
Amongst themselves they came up with a plan to hold a cake and tea sale after school. Some children baked cakes and muffins of all shapes and flavours and others donated shop bought cakes. All cakes were gone within minutes of opening the doors much to their delight.
Mrs Smith, who runs Eco Club, was proud of their generosity and organisation skills. Although she oversaw their endeavour. they set to the job in hand and needed little guidance. The children were proud that they managed to raise over £140!
Mrs Price, who teaches Latin at the school, said “I am so proud of everyone that entered the competition and the high standard of entries this year. The children absolutely love learning Latin and it is great to see that their enthusiasm has flowed in their entries and the judges have recognised this. Well done, I can’t wait to see what you produce next year!”
Thanks
Betty Silvester would like to express her gratitude to ‘the kind lady who returned my lost handbag to the Salvation Army Care Home on Happisburgh Road in North Walsham on Wednesday 19 July.
I would really like to meet this kind, honest lady and hope that she may be one of your readers.

RNLI appeal for waterside volunteers to help of being on or near water. It is part of the save lives on Broads waterways charity efforts towards the goal of halving the
Staffs at pubs, bars and shops in the Broads National Park are being offered free training and equipment by the RNLI that could ultimately help prevent people drowning on the area’s waterways.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the charity that saves lives at sea, is running a pilot scheme, which will supply potentially lifesaving “throw bags” to pubs at key locations, and train staff to use them when people get into distress in the water.
The ‘Waterside Community Responder’ scheme comes in the wake of official statistics that show in the last three years, 20 people drowned around the Broads.
Ben Mitchell, Community Safety Partner for the RNLI, said “This scheme is very straightforward – we’re offering to provide free training in how to use these throw bags, to the people and businesses that are most likely to witness people getting into difficulty in the water.”
A throw bag is essentially a 20m floating line that when packed its own bag is weighted enough to be thrown to a casualty, it can then be used to pull the casualty to safety by the person throwing the bag.
Ben, who will deliver the training along with fellow members of Happisburgh RNLI Community Safety Team, continued: ‘Research shows that a significant proportion of
number of accidental coastal deaths by 2024.
drownings involve people visiting pubs and bars near water and then getting into distress. It could be someone taking a seemingly innocent swim and suffering cold water shock, or it could be through an accident where someone never intended to be in the water.’
‘Staff at these places will be our advocates in waterside environments, and are the ones most likely to be there at times where risk is most prevalent. The idea behind training staff or volunteers at pubs bars and restaurants is they will be able to encourage good behaviours in that environment by giving the public knowledge and advice, and they will ultimately know what to do if someone did enter the water.’
The initiative coincides with the RNLI’s annual national drowning prevention campaign, Respect the Water. The campaign aims to encourage people to make themselves aware of the potential dangers of the water and take steps wherever possible to minimise the risk
North Walsham Times 524 August 5th 2017
Some basic safety information the RNLI is urging people to remember is: ■ People who fall into cold water follow the same instinct, to gasp, thrash about and swim hard. But this is the worst thing to do – it increases chances of water entering your lungs and increases strain on your heart. ■ If you fall into cold water, fight your instinct to swim hard. Instead just float until you can regain control of your breathing before then trying to swim to safety or call for help. You’ll have a far better chance of staying alive. ■ If you see someone else in trouble in the water, fight the instinct to go in yourself. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
Broads Authority Chief Executive, John Packman welcomed the Waterside Community Responder initiative when he said ‘We want everyone to enjoy the waterways within our National Park safely. Thankfully the vast majority of the 8 million visits to the Broads every year pass without incident but any move that can help minimise the risk of tragic accidents has to be a good thing.’
The RNLI is now appealing for managers and staff at pubs, bars and restaurants to come forward and register their interest for training. More information can be found by visiting rnli.org/pages/throw-bag-training

Happy Birthday
Henleys Estate Agents in Cromer are celebrating their first year in business. Directors Ryan Ratcliffe and Jeff Cox have firmly established themselves in the town and have had an incredible year.
Ryan says “It has been absolutely fantastic, we have not only far exceeded our first-year targets but we are now the top selling agent in the town (statistics provided by Rightmove). Our reviews say it all, very happy buyers and very happy sellers. It is all about going that extra mile for our clients.”
Jeff goes on to say “We have given our clients the service they expect when selling their biggest asset. We work longer and harder to find buyers who will pay the amount our clients want for their properties.

Hansel and Gretel
Free open-air family show in the Memorial Park
North Walsham Memorial Park will set the scene for a vibrant retelling of the classic fairy tale Hansel and Gretel.
Expect catchy songs, larger than life characters and a plot with a twist as New Stages (who run theatre shows and classes locally) will present a new adaptation of the famous story, written by show director Joseph Ballard.
Joseph said “Hansel and Gretel is a great story and we’ve given it a bit of a twist to present some family theatre for free in the park. The summer is a great time to make the most of the beautiful setting that is our park and spend the time as a family in sharing some live theatre. It’s great to be able to inspire the local area with live theatre through our regular classes and our performances in town and I hope the community will come and support us.”
Actors will be accompanied by members of North Norfolk Youth Theatre who will play some of the children who have been captured by the greedy witch. Andrew Burrell, 12, and Megan Howlett, 17, who both live in North Walsham, will play the title characters. North Walsham Town Council have supported the project to bring free theatre alive in the summer holidays.
The show will take place on Wednesday 9 August at 2pm and 6pm in the Memorial Park. Audiences are advices to bring seating or blankets and a picnic – just don’t eat the children! More information about the show and New Stages can be found at www.new-stages.co.uk.

The speaker at our June meeting was Gerry Foster, her subject Sheep Dog Trials.
The husband of one of Gerry's friends had an accident and was housebound, moping around and testing his wife's patience. Gerry took pity and offered to take him out for a spin. Whilst driving they saw a sign ‘Sheep Dog Trials’ and decided to give it a whirl. It proved to be a life changing decision. She was entranced and could not tear herself away. Gerry was fascinated by the bond between shepherd and dog. Her career in the electronics industry paled into insignificance - sheep dog trialling beckoned.
Several years of hard work followed before determination eventually enabled her to compete on level terms with established shepherds at trials. Since then she has added Border Collie training to her CV.
Gerry has reached the pinnacle of her profession as a Sheep Dog Trial Judge. She has, in this capacity, travelled the world - Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many European countries. She is articulate, dynamic and above all loves her work.
I will not elaborate on dog training or judging, it will be best to hear it from Gerry's own lips when you invite her to your own meeting. However, I will tell you one gem. Excluding the human factor shepherding is unique in nature - one animal controlling an animal of another species. Tom Reid

Grandparents are special - but what are their legal rights? By Robert Colwell, Head of Family Law, Hayes + Storr
When it comes to legal rights in relation to children, the all-important words are ‘parental responsibility’ – or PR as it’s more simply referred to. In most cases this means only people with PR can make an application in relation to a child – and that applies to the birth parents as named on the birth certificate, step-parents if applied for after marriage, or legal guardians. You’ll notice that an important group who could be considered to have ‘parental responsibility’ (the clue is in the name) are missing from that list – grandparents. Sadly, grandparents do not have any automatic rights with regards to their grandchildren.
However, family courts often recognise the vital role grandparents play in their grandchildren’s lives – and whilst their rights are limited, they can apply to the court for permission (leave) to apply for a Child Arrangement Order. The court will then take the following matters into consideration;
• The applicant’s connection with the child(ren) in question
• The nature of the application itself
• Whether the application could be harmful to the child(ren)’s wellbeing in any way. This may include whether the court feels a grandparent’s continued contact with the child(ren) might have a negative impact on the rest of the family.
Although the court will only refuse an application in extreme circumstances, it’s almost always best to see it as a last resort. The effective use of an amicable solicitor’s letter and mediation can prevent family differences escalating, enabling all parties to move forward and act in the best interests of the grandchild(ren). In fact, attending mediation is a legal requirement for both grandparents and parents prior to court proceedings, although in a limited number of situations mediation can be made exempt.
If mediation fails, grandparents can then apply for permission (leave) of the court to consider a Child Arrangement Order, and this permission is normally given at the first hearing. At this hearing, the court will set down directions at the same time. Any safeguarding concerns will also be raised by a CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services) child welfare officer at the initial hearing.
The court will have already provided notice of the application to all those with parental responsibility. There may be objections to the application, so it’s important that grandparents obtain good quality legal advice – and obtain it early.
If the grandparents’ son or daughter (the person with parental responsibility for the child) is estranged from the family, the court will expect

that parent to reunite with the child and make the application on behalf of the grandparent(s) in the first instance – with the aim of reintroducing them back into the child’s life gradually. The grandparent should not be the one making the initial attempt – unless they are left with absolutely no alternative.
Hayes + Storr has helped many grandparents reunite with their grandchildren and we offer a reduced rate to discuss all options, which includes clear advice in writing after the meeting.

Marett’s Chariots opens new commercial garage
Marett's Chariots, Norfolk’s friendly coach company, have just opened Marett’s Chariots Commercial Garage on the site of the old SDS Autos premises on Laundry Loke, North Walsham.
Now, as well as maintaining their own fleet of executive coaches, Marett's Chariots have opened the new premises to the local business community and fleet owners who are looking for a high quality, competitive and friendly service from a commercial garage.
Based on the same facilities as the old DWH Commercial garage (where Marett's Chariots had their vehicles maintained when they first started), this new service to the area means an end to the trip Norwich for repairs and the high cost of paying city and main dealer rates.
The new facilities boast an impressive four bay workshop and offers a rolling road, brake testing, smoke emissions and head light adjustment machines With six fully qualified mechanics on duty, offering over
70 years’ experience between them, your vehicle is in safe and knowledgeable hands. With an Operator Compliance Record Score of green zero green zero with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (as good as it gets) for their own fleet of coaches, this would appear to be the case.
Managing Director, Anthony Marett said "when the opportunity to take over the old SDS Autos premises arose, it was too good an opportunity to turn down. Since the demise of DWH Commercials, I have always felt there was a need for a really good quality commercial garage in the area and hope we can fill that need. Running our own fleet of coaches we know the importance of keeping vehicles on the road with the wheels turning and the vehicle earning".
To enquire about having your vehicles maintained, contact Marett's Chariots on 01692 406818 or email info@marettschariots.co.uk
North Walsham Town Twinning Every two years we experience the fastest week when our friends from Friesenried, Germany pay us a visit.
This year they arrived in June at Stansted to be collected by coach to take part in the visit programme organized by the committee and association members.
The meeting of visitors and hosts took place at the Atrium, North Walsham High school but more importantly, after the speeches, to enjoy the excellent buffet prepared by hosts and presented by members of the committee. Feeling tired from a day’s travel we dispersed to our various homes to relax and have a good night’s sleep before embarking on the visit programme.
The first outing was to Southwold to visit a typical English seaside town,

always popular as our guests live at least a full day’s travel from the sea. There the lighthouse was visited with a guided talk about the history of the Southwold Lighthouse and Lighthouses in general. Free time, a pier visit and of course, fish and chips completed the day. A full day visit to Houghton Hall was next and this also proved to be a hit, especially the grounds and gardens. Sunday was a free day for the hosts to show their various guests the high lights of Norfolk of which there are many. The evening was organized for the youngsters to enjoy canoeing and a BBQ at the Mike Thurston Water Centre.
Monday, due to the tide times, required an early start to arrive at Blakeney to have a boat trip to visit the seals. A bit choppy but nevertheless enjoyed by all. After this, the day was completed by a visit to Walsingham for free time. This was also the day for our farewell celebrations at the Community Centre for a hot meal and dancing afterwards to The Squeegees.
Tuesday saw us all together once again at the Community Centre but this time to say our farewells as our friends departed for their return journey to Germany.
I always like to finish with a few statistics so here goes. Thirty five visitors were accommodated by 16 host families and of the 35 first time visitors numbered 17, among them several youngsters.
Accolades must be given to Sanders Coaches, The Flying Cockerel, The Squeegees, all hosts, the Committee and everyone who helped make this visit, under difficult circumstances, a great success.
Sadly we lost a couple of members this year which cast its inevitable shadow on the visit, but all credit to those involved for their stoicism. More than ever we would like to welcome new members and anyone interested is invited, in the interim, to ring 01953 607119 and speak to Steve.
We believe this offer will save you at least £100.00 per year (based on 7 days a week delvery charge). After that time, our delivery charges will still be cheaper than our nearest town centre competitor, which gives a saving of £25 per year to our existing customers. Erpingham with Calthorpe WI Village Map Project
In 1987 members of Erpingham with Calthorpe WI worked together with Norfolk County Council to produce a map of walks around our village. Recently a copy of this map came to light. It is a fascinating document, well researched, that includes tantalising bits of historical information about our village, for instance that William Joyce, (Lord Haw Haw) stayed in the local pub before the Second World War. Fascinating!
Our regular WI walking group used it as the basis of one of our regular Tuesday walks. It was one of the best attended walks we have conducted, the weather was very kind and we were able to see that many of the highlights of the walk were still in place. We also spotted the changes wrought over the last 30 years and decided to update the map.
This was not going to be as straight forward as we had imagined. Because times have changed over the 30 years since its conception we have decided to focus the walks in the new map on our village hall, where there is now ample parking.. To encourage non car users, we decided to extend the map to take in the main bus stop on the A140. The scope of the map will be extended to include the whole of the delightful Thwaite Common - a protected area for wildlife. We will add more detail in that area and the layout of the paths, some of which had altered over the years will be updated.
We were fascinated by the brief detail given about some of the notable places seen on the walks, and began fact checking and updating the information. Soon we had almost enough material to write a book. This has resulted in the formation of the History Group, a whole new group whose members, including some non-WI members will do research in depth on the stuff that most interests them and will report on its findings in due course. Documents, photos and artefacts are emerging, as well as stories from older residents.
The imagination of the crafters and needlewomen amongst us was fired up by the walk and subsequent discussion about the map design. We had been looking for a new and ambitious creative work for some time and the possibilities of a large co-operative multimedia version of the redesigned map of the walk will be our next long term project.
A date has been fixed to unveil the new map, nothing like a bit
of time pressure to focus the mind : 2 September 2017.
Our WI plan to take over the village hall for the day, open a WI cafe with cake, snacks and a place to enjoy a cup of tea with fellow walkers. We are also going to display some of our many “historic” finds and photos, with information about notable sites of historic interest. The walkers could take in the historic local church, St Mary’s, (Open 10am -4pm) where amid medieval splendour, the WI sponsored “Erpingham Embroidery” is permanently on display. Members of The Friends of Thwaite Common will be on hand to talk about the wildlife you might hope to see, and the conservation measures that are taking place and are offering guided walks on the Common at 11am, 1pm and 3pm
We are hoping that WI Members from around Norfolk will join us to celebrate walking in our lovely county, and we would like to inspire other WIs to research and create their own local walking map. Could this be the start of a Federation-wide idea? After all, our walking group is always looking for new areas to explore.
Information about the launch and regular updates on the activities of the map designers, the History Society and the Map Embroidery group will appear on our newly redesigned website, so please check on our progress on erpinghamwithcalthorpe.co.uk

Blickling Proms weekend – a time for celebrations
It’s time to shake out those picnic blankets and prepare yourselves for the musical sensations of both Classic Ibiza and the Great British Prom events at Blickling 11-12 August. The latter is now in its 7th year and has become a huge favourite in Norfolk’s social calendar, so much so, that some guests are using the occasion to bring family and friends together to celebrate some of the biggest moments of their lives!
Step forward, Suzanne Cooper and Michael Gaffaney who became engaged back in 2015 and were looking for something really special for their big day. Suzanne explained “We saw the event advertised and immediately both had the same idea! My parents had always wanted to go to the event and Mike’s parents, who are from Wellington in New Zealand, now in the 70s were planning to travel over for what may be their last visit to the UK, so we thought that the Blickling Proms would provide such a wonderful memory for us all to enjoy on the eve of our wedding as it’s such a fantastically British event that’s enjoyed by all ages. We approached the organisers to see if it was a possibility to have a marquee and were told that it would be an honour to host the reception there.”
Following this, Suzanne and Mike contacted Blickling Hall to see if the marriage ceremony could be conducted at the Hall and from there, their dream, wedding day plans came together. “We’re having our wedding ceremony at midday in The Temple behind Blickling Hall;
it’s a wonderful, intimate venue which will be ideal for us as we will just have both sets of parents and grown up children attending the ceremony; sadly, many of Mike’s family are unable to join us because of the distance.”
The marriage ceremony will be followed by lunch at The Buckinghamshire Arms and then, in the early evening, their wedding car will pick them up and gently approach the concert site, dropping them outside the marquee, which will look down over the lake and stage. “We have around 40 other friends and family who will be joining us for the evening and I can’t wait! We’re so excited!”
The concert lends itself well to special occasions, with previous special birthdays and corporate celebrations being hosted in marquees at the concert. And it’s not just the Great British Prom as Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said “This year we also have celebratory groups coming to the Classic Ibiza event which is fantastic, including Adrian and Amanda Dunham who founded the awardwinning Gallery Haircutters in Norwich; they are bringing a party of around 40 to celebrate their special anniversary.”
Adrian said “We came to Classic Ibiza last year and it was such a fun evening we thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate our special anniversary. It’s a great way for us to treat our staff of 28 and others who have worked with us and supported us over the last 30 years, including photographers and make-up

artists. We’re going to give the marquee an Ibiza theme and we’ve also invited clients who are coming to the event to join us for a glass of bubbly so it should be a really fun night and we’re really looking forward to it.”
The “Ibiza” marquee will be in good use on the Saturday evening too with a different group of concert-goers. Jack Baxter and his wife Valerie from Taverham have been to all the Proms concerts “We have been coming with family and friends every year, since the first concert was put on. The deal is that I book the marquee through the organisers and then family and friends buy their own tickets and we all meet up there. It’s a great excuse to get the extended family and different generations together whilst enjoying a few glasses of Pimms and taking in the atmosphere. We all thoroughly enjoy it!”
Lisa said “We are taking more and more group bookings each year. I think it’s the atmosphere that attracts groups of people. It’s such a fantastic setting to enjoy a special, memorable evening with friends.”

INTRODUCING REDWINGS’ OWN FANTASTIC MR FOX Meet Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s brand-new Adoption Star!
A special rescued resident at Redwings is putting big smiles on visitors’ faces while also helping to raise vital funds for horses in need.
Handsome black Shire Cross Fox, who lives at the charity’s Caldecott Visitor Centre near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, has been announced as the charity’s latest Adoption Star.
Redwings’ popular Adoption Scheme, which has been running for over 30 years, allows supporters to sponsor one of its 24 Adoption Star horses or donkeys for just £12.50 per year, which goes towards their care and that of their fellow rescued friends.
Sponsors are kept up-to-date with letters or online diary entries, and

Fox was selected for the scheme over the summer following the heart-breaking loss of the charity’s beautiful Shire horse Adoption Star Poppy due to sudden and severe colic.
This friendly gent, who stands at an impressive 17.1 hands high (that’s about 174cm just to his shoulder), arrived at Redwings in 2010 as part of a large group of horses when he was just a few months old. Their owner had sadly passed away and no one was able to look after them. While some of his friends were able to find new homes through Redwings’ rehoming scheme, unfortunately Fox has a condition which means he experiences stiffness in his legs from time-to-time and so he needs to stay at the Sanctuary, where he can be kept a close eye on by the vet team. However, this certainly does not stop him enjoying a game of chase with his best friend Bungle or running to the fence whenever the offer of a scratch arises!
Lynn Cutress, Redwings’ Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to introduce Fox as our new Adoption Star and we hope our supporters will love him as much as we do! He’s a real gentle giant who’s always first to the fence to greet visitors making him the perfect ambassador for Redwings and the Adoption Scheme. “By supporting him, his sponsors will also be helping the hundreds of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in our care nationwide making him our very own fantastic Mr Fox!”
To meet Fox, visit Redwings Caldecott – Beccles Road, Fritton, NR31 9EY – open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, 10am to 4pm, and entry is free.

Dear Margaret,
I went to the second hand bookshop at Felbrigg Hall and bought an old book called 'The Wonderful Year'. Someone had inscribed in the front of the book 'with love to our dear son on his return March 15th 1918'.
I became intrigued and wondered what the circumstances were - it was 242 days before the first war ended. It was about a week before the second battle of the Somme. Was he a soldier, home on leave from the hideous First World War? Was he injured and never went back to the front? Or was this a brief episode in his life - did he go back to die?
I looked up the date and found that Wilfred Owen was in a military hospital in Ripon and wrote a letter to his own mother on that day. He complained about blood on his sheets and mud on his blankets. Well, cutting a long story short, that stranger whose mother or father wrote an inscription in a book inspired me to write this poem. It has been an adventure - like finding out that Heart of The World by D.W Griffith was the blockbuster film of that day and Lillian Gish who starred in the film said in a television interview in 1980. ‘I believe that film is the most powerful of things' or something like that and I believe that she was right.
Most of all, it has brought this person to life for me, in my imagination. I wonder if the million to one chance exists of someone knowing who this young son was just from the inscription in that book, ‘The Wonderful Year’? Graham Jones

Friday March 15th 1918
It was a Friday, someone waited; someone who loved you. They were elated. Wilfred Owen wrote, ill with a fever, to his mother, from Ripon barracks on that same Friday. Woodrow Wilson was was still president; the sign was Pisces, you were a dear son. What was your name? Five thousand eight hundred
and eight hours to go; and did you return, to those that loved you and brought you that book, The Wonderful Year? Or, was it again the curdling screams, the shattering dreams, the ear piercing shells; the mud and the blood, of Wilfred’s letter to his dear mother, dated 15th March of nineteen eighteen.

Special
Everyone is somebody to someone, Really, there’s no arguing with that. Maybe it’s your dog who thinks you’re gorgeous, Or failing that, the goldfish or the cat. Perhaps it’s the lady on the checkout, The one you complimented on her smile, Or else the person feeling rather lonesome With whom you stopped and chatted for a while. Maybe there are folk who’ve never met you, Grateful that you cared enough to give. And don’t forget the snail plucked from the pathway And set upon the grass, that it might live. Everyone is special, that’s the message, That is all I really want to say. Never doubt your power or your glory, Somehow you are making someone’s day. Tricia Sturgeon

PEOPLE WATCHING
I sat on the bench in the Churchyard In the middle of the seaside town, People of different ages Had decidedly 'dressed down'.
Men who usually wore a suit Now had shorts above knee high Which together with Bermuda shirts Would make the bosses sigh.
• FREE measuring and FREE Estimating • free local delivery!
don’t forget we also have an excellent selection of Blinds, including Roller, Roman, Wood, Venetian, and a Great range of Black Out Rollers!
Ladies, well I never, Wore shorts that were – well – short And tight into the bargain Shrunk or like that bought? Teenagers were just teenagers Scruffy and unkempt Slogan printed T-shirts Told people where they went.
There is one thing that I noticed With you I ought to share, Those smiling laughing faces Showed they were happy there.
Above the noise and chatter A memorial is stood For those who died for our country In the hope to make it good. People going into Church Just to look around, And to salve their conscience Buy a postcard I'll be bound.
A row of shops across the road Are doing a roaring trade, Selling newspapers and grotty gifts That do not make the grade. A hardware and a clothes shop Stop the passers- by The windows dressed in such a way To catch the people's eye.
Ice creams seem to be replaced By coffee in paper cups The price they charge for this today Makes me think they're sold a pup. And so I sit here watching As all the world goes by, And wishing I could join them I give a little sigh.

A total of 85 people attended Walcott Village Hall on 12 July and a further 70 people visited Bacton Village Hall on 13 July to find out more about the project, which would see approximately 1.5 million cubic metres of sand pumped onto the beach.
The drop in sessions were open from 2pm to 8pm each day with experts from North Norfolk District Council’s Coastal Management Team, Coastal Partnership East and Royal Haskoning DHV on hand to answer people’s questions and queries.
Cllr John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Coastal Management said “I attended the session at Bacton and people were genuinely interested in the project and keen to find out more. I was pleased with how positive the feedback was and overall people were very supportive. We are working closely 26

with the Bacton Terminal Operators to make this project happen.”
People were asked for their views on the scheme and gave their feedback on the proposals – here are some of the comments received:
As well as holding the drop in sessions people are being invited to demonstrate community support for the project through the JustGiving page, and register to receive regular email updates on the project.
The next stage of the project will see a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment carried out before applications for consents and licenses are submitted.
• Make it happen
• Bring it on!
• The sooner the better
• This will make Bacton more attractive and give stability to small businesses to invest and bring employment to this part of north Norfolk
• Increase tourism with enhanced views and landscape
• While it will not affect my use of the beach area I can see the long term benefits of stopping/slowing down the coastal erosion
Queries were raised regarding how the scheme would work and how it would perform during storm events.
The proposal relies on funding from a number of sources including the Bacton Terminal Operators and National Flood and Coastal Erosion Funding.
NNDC has committed £500,000 to the construction of the scheme, the Regional Flood and Coast Defence Committee (Eastern) through the local levy has committed £500,000 and the National Natural Flood Management Fund has committed £120,000.

STREET SCENES
A Major One-Man Exhibition by Trevor Woods at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea Saturday 19 August – Saturday 2 September
This exhibition, featuring the latest series of paintings, sees North Norfolk artist Trevor Woods take a fresh look at street scenes.
Whilst on his travels, Trevor has always recorded the places that inspire him to interpret them in a unique way, from colourful hillside towns in the South of France, to the wonders of the Venetian waterways.

Trevor says: “I have been looking at street scenes, and Venice’s tight canals in particular, and concentrating on the angles and lines, but more importantly the colours that make up a view. I will also be showing paintings of some of the other amazing places I have visited over the years, such as colourful Collioure in the South of France. Having looked back at reference photos, I’m exploring them in the way I paint today. So expect lots of crisp, clean lines and plenty of vibrant colours.”
Also featured, for the first time, is a set of hand-made, hand-painted shards assembled
This latest series of paintings has gone beyond breaking down these scenes from what is familiar, to abstracting elements of what you see, resulting in fantasy alleyways, avenues, and buildings all expressed in myriad colours. North Walsham Times 524 August 5th 2017

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
By the time you read this, a new cat will have taken up residence in our home. We thought long and hard before making the decision as we felt, due to our ages, it would not be appropriate to offer a home to a kitten and we also felt that as Maxwell, our neighbour’s cat, is a frequent visitor, we had to make sure he would be happy to share his space with another feline. Mylee ticks all the boxes as she is a very gentle cat and came into care with her kittens from a multi cat household. As she is female she will not pose a threat to Maxwell when he visits and we hope they will soon be good friends. She was a super little mum and we were delighted that all her kittens found lovely new homes.
However, before she could take up residence, we realised that she had a problem in her mouth as she started to dribble quite heavily and was obviously very sore. Cats that live in multi cat households have often been in contact with the calicivirus which can cause gingivitis and, because it can reoccur, the recommended treatment is to remove the teeth to prevent further episodes. Mylee had an operation to remove the teeth in the infected area and will be going back for her pre op check before coming home. Hopefully, once her gums become less inflamed and sore she will feel a much happier little cat and, indeed, she is already tucking into her food, including the biscuits. Although it seems a drastic action to have to take, a nice healthy mouth will give her a better quality of life. Mylee will never be clear of the virus, but the vaccines she has had will help protect her in the future.
Mowgli, one of our younger residents, has also been in the wars with serious breathing problems and needed injections to help with this. X-rays indicate his lungs are now much better, but that he still has an infected larynx. He has needed more treatment to help with his recovery and is due to go back for a check soon to see what progress has been made. As he joined us from an industrial site and his coat was full of
Mylee, with Donald, one of our kittens
cement dust, this may be the root cause of the problem. His appetite has improved and he is full of mischief, so we are feeling quite optimistic that he will make a good recovery.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Summer Tips from Animal Magic
Well it looks like summer is finally here, but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke, which can be fatal to our four legged friends.
Here are our top tips for a safe summer with your dog :
them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetites return.
• Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water
water intoxication is a real danger, always supervise your dog to ensure they don’t ingest too much water whilst playing.
• If at all concerned about your dog’s health, always consult your vet as soon as possible. But most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!
If you want to treat your dog to some homemade ice cream, it’s really easy to make:
• Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven. Remember - dogs die in hot cars. If you can’t take them with you then leave them at home.
•
• •
• Try to walk your dog in the cooler morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood. Never allow your dog to exercise or play excessively in hot weather.
River, preparing to cool off in her favourite way
• Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors.
• If your dog goes off their food try to feed
with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.
• Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe but please be aware
Mash 1 tub of strawberries with a potato masher
Mix in 3 cups of fat free, unsweetened plain yoghurt Pour into moulds, ice cube trays or a muffin tray and freeze overnight

Len Wilmot (third from left in picture) recently made a flying visit to Norfolk where he met up with some of his former team mates.
The South African centre was a Vikings regular for much of 2001 - 03. Amongst those pictured are John Marlee, Chris Greenhall, Matt Scott, Nick Greenhall, Dave Smith, Tim Malone, Aidan Brand, Chris Borrett, Andy Thorpe, Phil Friel, Matt Purling, Kenny Dodds and Jeff van Poortvliet.
The current squad have been training hard every Tuesday & Thursday since early July in advance of the new season. So far the emphasis has been on fitness, and Head of Rugby James Brooks has been pleased with average attendances of well over thirty. The Vikings first two League games
