NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM We are very sorry to be losing one of the stalwart members of North Walsham In Bloom, Sandra Bonney.
Sandra has been with us for a long time and up until now has been the driving force behind the Grammar School Road beds - among other sites having designed these two beds from scratch and overseen the maintenance and development with great knowledge and enthusiasm. However grandparent duties come to many of us and Sandra is no exception. We wish her all the best, and hope that perhaps when the grandchildren are older she will once again be able to be part of us. We will miss her.
We are now looking forward to working on the first of the Post Office beds in the town. We have been in touch with Brian Skinner who originally set the bed up. Brian is going to advise on how to care for and maintain the mostly South African plants that are in this bed, which has been somewhat neglected for the last few year. What a wonderful opportunity for us to do something different.
We will also shortly be creating a new display to replace the small trough near the 30 mph sign on the Norwich Road. Continued on page 4...

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM Continued from front cover...
This, although seemingly straightforward is anything but. The display will require permission from Highways and consideration given to line of sight for the nearby houses. When was being in North Walsham in Bloom ever simple? We will be holding our annual coffee morning on 28 September in St Nicholas Hall and this year for the first time we will be selling ‘In Bloom’ merchandise, which we hope will be very popular as presents etc. Lastly, I would like to thank all the very kind people who come up to us when we are working about the town and compliment us on the displays, some even give us money for our funds. This is much appreciated and just goes to show that all or efforts are appreciated.
Two Norfolk headteachers named as at top of their profession Two of the region's headteachers have been recognised as among the country's best by the profession's governing body.
Geoff Baker, principal at Cromer Academy, and Claire Heald, principal at Jane Austen College in Norwich, have been declared National Leaders of Education by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. The designation recognises their skills as teachers and leaders and as people who can lend their expertise to nearby schools that need help.
Geoff Baker, As part of the award, their schools also become principal National Support Schools in recognition of their strong at Cromer Academy track records of high pupil progress and performance. Chair of the National College for Teaching and Leadership Roger Pope said “I’d like to congratulate Claire and Geoff and their academies on being appointed as national leaders of education and national support schools. They should be very proud of this achievement.
“National leaders of education are at the heart of school improvement. They’re supporting other schools and developing the next generation of leaders. At NCTL, we want to do all we can to support their work.“
Both Cromer Academy and Jane Austen College are part of the Inspiration Trust family of schools, which brings together 14 schools in Norfolk and north Suffolk.
Jane Austen College is one of the most over-subscribed schools in the county at Year 7 and its sixth form students recorded the best A Level results of any Norfolk state school last year.
Cromer Academy was recently rated as Good overall by Ofsted, with Outstanding grades for personal development, behaviour, and welfare; and for leadership and management. It is in the top 10 schools in Norfolk for attainment at GCSE.
Trust chief executive Dame Rachel de Souza said "This is a fantastic achievement by Claire and Geoff, supported by the staff in their schools. These new designations add to our National Teaching School at Hethersett Academy, and are an important part of our work to improve education for young people not just in our own schools but more widely across the region."

Our £50,000 Fundraising Milestone
When our daughter Daisy was born in 2005, we eventually found out that the blisters appearing on her skin were Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). We were put in touch with the Charity DEBRA who supported sufferers of EB, and also the area Fund Raising Manager John Parker. By 2007 we were fundraising for the DEBRA Charity.
The first sale we held was at the Table Top Sale in Holt Community Centre - it was hard work but myself and my Dad Peter raised a small amount of money and awareness for DEBRA. We continued with our sales in other places and a really positive event for Michael and I was an Easter car boot sale held in the car park at Sainsbury’s in North Walsham. Since then we have been busy fund raising for DEBRA at every available opportunity!
We have had so much support from family and friends. A favourite memory for us is being cold at an event on a windy field in Weybourne and Mum Christine arriving with delicious warm freshly baked cheese scones. A stall held once at Sheringham Carnival saw me and Dad get absolutely soaked as I kept saying ‘’I think the weather will hold a little longer’’. Dad was sure it was about to pour, and he was correct! We threw everything into the car and then couldn’t get in ourselves, which was the wettest I’ve ever been! We have had fundraising competitions with each other where Michael and our son Joseph were at a car boot in Wells and me and Dad at a car boot in Sheringham and Mum was left to look after Daisy and her poorly blistered feet. I can’t remember who won, but we raised lots of money and awareness!
Thanks to Holt Parish Church for allowing us to use the Church Hall for our Jumble Sales, and without the support of all our wonderful helpers we wouldn’t be able to hold these Sue, Peter and June are amazing helpers, everyone’s help is always very much appreciated. The night before a Jumble Sale

A lovely evening was held at the Auden Theatre in Holt, with the Charles Chambers Trio. It was a truly amazing evening with lots of monies raised.
We regularly join the car boots at Bodham and Cookies in Sheringham - it’s lovely to see the regular customers! Stalls at Holt Primary School and Astley Primary School are always enjoyable.
In 2010 we were charity of the day at Mannington Hall, which was possible due to the kindness of Lord and Lady Walpole. It was one of my favourite fundraising days, and our biggest fundraiser. We were included in the Radio Norfolk Treasure Hunt, and had the clue hidden on an alpaca. The garage was turned into an Art Gallery, our friends and family helped on various stalls and it was a wonderful day.
A special memory was releasing 25 DEBRA balloons at Budgens of Holt with Mr Baker and Sandra when they celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Budgens being open in Holt, where we were then chosen as charity of the year.
Lodges in the area have also been generous.
Collection boxes on checkouts in Budgens and Nobbys all add up throughout the years.
Dubs at Holt Hall holds some great memories, from enjoying strawberries in the sunshine to pulling welly boots out of the mud, whilst Razz the Clown still continued to try and entertain!
Friends Sharon, Pauline and Peter have arranged quizzes for us which is very much appreciated. We have ladies who knit and sew the most wonderful crafts for us to sell.
Without all the kind donations, we wouldn’t be able to hold so many events, a big thank you to everyone.
There have been so many very special moments, meeting others in similar positions, hearing peoples stories, being part of a special team and of course raising awareness of EB and much needed funds which goes towards research to help find a cure for EB sufferers. Now into our tenth year of fundraising, we have just been presented with a certificate from DEBRA having raised £50,000, which we are very proud of. Veronica & Michael Pearson & Family.
Christmas Tree Festivals are another significant part of our fundraising. Rotary Clubs and Masonic

Thornage Hall Garden Fete
On Sunday 3 September Thornage Hall will open its gardens to the general public from 11.30am to 4pm.
The annual Garden Fete is an opportunity for those who live and work in and around the Hall to share their experience of this unique community in the heart of North Norfolk.
Thornage Hall provides supported living accommodation and work based learning opportunities for adults with learning difficulties in the beautiful surroundings of a 70 acre biodynamic farm.
Living, learning and working together
Garden Fete Sunday 3rd September • 11:30am to 4pm
This year’s fete will include a cooking demonstration by Richard Bainbridge of Benedict's Restaurant, showcasing ingredients tended and grown on our biodynamic farm. Richard Bainbridge has been delighted to champion Thornage produce at his British Bistro in Norwich – ‘The vegetables enjoy the finest provenance you could expect locally, combining a sound understanding of biodynamic principles with learning opportunities for the wider community’.
A recipe from Thornage Hall also features in ‘The Norfolk Cook Book’, championed by Richard and launched at a gala event in Norwich earlier this year. Signed copies of the cook book, ideal for your Christmas list, will be available for purchase on the day.
With plenty for the whole family to see and do, our garden fete is a great day out for the whole family.
As well as a range of stalls selling arts and crafts, biodynamic meat and vegetables direct from our farm, we also have a range of music and entertainment including:
• Music from Sam Smith singers • Fun kids activities
• East Coast and Cromer gospel choir • ‘Bramble ramble’ creative trail
Alison Hall, Director of Thornage Hall, is keen to share the work of the organisation with the wider community and said ‘I am delighted to be opening the doors here at Thornage and allowing the wider community an opportunity to come and have a closer look at what we do. A fundamental part of our ethos is the principle that every individual has unique skills, our role is to celebrate these whilst at the same time providing opportunities to enhance and develop new ones’.

North Norfolk visitors encouraged to take home a taste of the county
Tourist Information Centres are selling popular local cook book Visitors to North Norfolk are being encouraged to take a taste of the county home with them.
A cook book packed full of recipes and stories from people at the heart of Norfolk’s gastronomic scene is on sale at Tourist Information Centres in Cromer and Holt.
The Norfolk Cook Book, which includes more than 50 recipes, has contributions from bakers, cooks, butchers and others. The likes of No 10 Restaurant, in Sheringham, and Cromer crabs are featured, and Great British Menu winner Richard Bainbridge has made an exclusive contribution.
Chef Charlie Hodson, one of the book’s contributors and the man behind the award-winning Nelson sausage roll, said it was aimed at “folk who really care about provenance”. He added “It’s all based around the best suppliers, retailers, restaurants and chefs in Norfolk, and the feedback has been amazing.”

Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business & Economic Development and Tourism, said: “The gastronomic scene in North Norfolk is something we are very proud of, and it’s part of a countywide success story.
“It is great that visitors to our Tourist Information Centres, which already offer a huge range of local information and advice, can now take a taste of the county home with them.”
The arrival of the book in the Tourist Information Centres comes as North Norfolk District Council promotes Norfolk Food Month, which includes selling produce in the TICs. Amongst the businesses that are involved in the campaign are Norfolk Saffron, Ollands Farm Foods (including its award-winning marmalades), the Nelson & Norfolk Tea Company, and Crush Foods (which makes oils, dressings, granola and Charlie Hodson’s sauces).
Your legal matters in safe hands Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of legal matters with care and professionalism.
The Norfolk Cook Book, published by Meze Publishing, has been produced in association with Norfolk Food & Drink.
Sarah de Chair, of Norfolk Food & Drink, said “The book is a collaboration of some of Norfolk’s finest food and drink businesses, from restaurants to 01692 409705 producers, coffee shops to cafes – it 07917 433700 really does offer www.richardwyliedecorator.co.uk something for everyone and Norfolk Trusted Trader highlights what a wonderful county 100% rating Norfolk is.” See website for further details North Walsham Times 525 August 19th 2017

Night Flying Aircraft
I am of the age that I can well remember being scared out of my wits as a child by RAF Lightnings from Coltishall going over our house in the middle of the night, very low and very fast. Those days are long gone but we still get some low-flying aircraft at night in north Norfolk.
I work with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which operates its helicopters from Norwich and Cambridge. We were the first air ambulance charity to get clearance to do night air ambulance work. This involves a lot of training and a lot of specialist equipment such as night vision goggles for the pilots and a large floodlight, which can be steered by one of the pilots.
The training is carried out all over East Anglia including around and into the grass airfield at Northrepps operated by Chris Gurney. So if you hear or see a comparatively quiet helicopter lit up like a Christmas tree going around that area, the chances are it’s our EAAA pilots being put through their paces – all in the name of saving lives.
Making more noise but definitely not lit up like a Christmas tree, you may occasionally see one of the rare and incredible USAF V22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft operating out of Mildenhall. It is half helicopter, half aircraft, with a giant rotor at the end of each wing. At night, all you might see is two huge green circles flying along – tiny lights at the end of each rotor blade give that effect.
These aircraft are solely for Special Operations missions, usually delivering or recovering special forces behind enemy lines. Their training is without doubt of vital importance as part of NATO’s capability. I do have a connection – I am the honorary commander of the maintenance squadron that looks after these amazing machines, so I get to meet the flight and ground crews. They are all well aware of the impact their operations can have on the community and are grateful for our tolerance and understanding.
Finally, we sometimes see another twin-rotor aircraft – the mighty RAF Chinook transport helicopter. These occasionally visit this area, again for training purposes, often unlit and operating in pairs. It can be quite spooky to hear the deep sound and just make out dark shapes perhaps with a single red flashing light visible. They don’t stay for long and we should all be reassured that these nocturnal visitors are making sure they are fully prepared to defend this country and the free world wherever and whenever they may be deployed.

And now she has designed Cromer-themed shoe clips for sale exclusively in the Tourist Information Centre, including a clip sporting Cromer crabs.
Milly said “It’s been an amazing couple of years and it’s very important to me to keep a strong link with the community I’m part of in Norfolk.” “Making a shoe clip for Cromer seems exactly the right thing to do – a souvenir that is unconventional but that can be worn easily. Happisburgh Lifeboat Station- Lifeboat Day and Fete 2017
The sun was out and so were lots of people at the annual Lifeboat Day and Fete.
The crew had an early 7.30am start with a crew off to Sea Palling to give safety cover for the Sea Palling Reef swim; all went well. Then back to station to set up for the fete.
Midday and it all started with hundreds of people turning out to support the station having fun, learning more about the RNLI, listening to live music, playing games, eating and being merry.
At 2pm the displays started with the East
Anglian Working Newfoundland dogs, then a display by Cromer Lifeboat, Lester, which joined Happisburgh’s Atlantic 85, Howard Bell, which arrived in May this year, and D Class, Spirit of Berkhamstead, which has been on station since 2003 and due to be replaced next month by a new D Class, Russell Pickering. The station will be sad to see Spirit of Berkhamstead go after 14 years service at Happisburgh,
North Walsham Probus Club Life Boat Rescues by Jim Page
Jim introduced himself as a lifeboat shore crew volunteer based at the Cromer Station where they operate a Tamar class all weather craft, also a D and Y Class, both inshore boats.
In total, the RNLI has 238 stations located at various positions round our coasts. Each boat is allocated to one of six divisions .They also have a reserve fleet of over 100 reserve boats which replace permanent boats when recalled for major maintenance. Altogether they have 344 boats of various classes. They consist of six all weather class of self-righting boats, each named after rivers, carrying crews of seven. The D and B classes are fast inshore inflatable boats carrying a crew of two or three. There are also four hovercraft, which operate on soft sand or muddy estuaries, with a crew of three or four.
Cromer Soapbox Derby 2017 The third Soapbox Derby has proved popular once again. Hundreds of spectators lined the barriers, every possible viewing angle covered by eager viewers. Toddlers on parents’ shoulders got the best views of all. The weather and spectator turnout was splendid. Chairman Tony Shipp commented that he was pleased with the result. No doubt we can expect a return next year of what is fast becoming an essential overture to the Cromer Carnival.
Winners: • Overall Fastest Kart : Christopher Daykin, from King’s Lynn • Concourse Winner : Adam Cock of Boston, in Fireman Sam Soapbox • Junior Winner : James Chare, Age 13 • Junior Runner-Up : Sam Flowerdew, from Buxton
Story by Isaac C-Knight Photos by Isaac above and John Ast, the brilliant Over & Out pics
now being the oldest of its kind in the RNLI fleet.
The fun carried on after the displays with the hog roast, bar and music on tap until 6pm.
The Station would like to thank all our supporters, volunteers and local companies and organisations for making the day a great success, raising £8,000.00 on the day with more still to come in, which makes it a very good year. All the money goes to help us Save Lives at Sea. Next year’s Lifeboat Day will be Sunday 5 August 2018 - please put in your diaries. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!
The Thames Station has an E class of boat, which is manned by a full time crew, often responding to three or more calls per day. They are powered by a water jet making them very suitable for the shallow waters of the Thames.
Lifeboat crews are summoned by pager and have a target of 11 minutes to arrive and be dressed ready for action at their station. They all undergo training at the purpose built facility at Poole, Bournemouth, which includes a building and repair facility for the all-weather class of boats and has a special swimming pool where every boat is tested for its self-righting ability.
There are over 900 lifeguard centres dotted around our coasts. They rescue people from the water, monitor sea conditions and set up appropriate warning flags, watch over people on the beach, and offer safety advice both on the beach and in classroom. In addition they also are trained first aiders and people who look and care for missing children. Jim gave us a warning - never attempt to rescue a person in distress ourselves, but raise the alarm by dialling 999 to call out the life boat and let the professionals deal with the incident, thus preventing us also becoming a casualty. More recently, the RNLI has undertaken the rescue of people on flood inland areas. A recent rescue was at Corkermouth, where flooding caused considerable damage to property.
Jim then called for two volunteers to come forward - Mike Brown was dressed in a two piece suit plus a helmet, while Graham Bunn put on a ‘oncer’ or dry suit. Both suits are water and chemical proof but not fireproof. He also called for another person to come forward (me) and be dressed in a lifeguard’s distinctive clothing.
Finally, he showed a short film of the Cromer and Sheringham Life Boats exercising together, also launching and recovery by different methods.
The next months talk is “Take Your Seat, The History of Chairs”

Norfolk marmalade is a Great Taste 2017 winner
The team at Happisburgh-based Ollands Farm Foods is celebrating yet again after being awarded two stars for their Seville Orange Marmalade at the prestigious Great Taste Awards.
Great Taste, billed as “the world’s most coveted food awards celebrates the very best in food and drink. This is the first time Ollands Farm Foods has received Great Taste stars and owner, Mary Ann Stuart, is understandably thrilled.
“Out of over 12,300 products being judged, just over 1,000 received a 2star award. The awards are judged by over 500 of the most demanding food critics, chefs, restauranteurs and food writers, so to be recognised in this way is really fantastic.
Being awarded two Great Taste stars, out of a possible three, means the judges dubbed the marmalade “outstanding. It’s the first time in several years that a Norfolk marmalade has been recognised in this way. Mary Ann continues:
“We make all our products by hand in small batches in our own kitchen using traditional methods. It’s hard work, but it really pays off. We get lots of lovely comments from our regular customers, but it’s a nice bonus when that commitment to quality is recognised by industry greats.
The award follows hot on the heels of multiple wins at the World’s Original Marmalade Awards in March, where the Seville Orange Marmalade won a gold award.
MP GETS ACTIVE FOR LOCAL CHARITIES
North Norfolk Member of Parliament Norman Lamb has raised around ÂŁ4,000 for local charities by taking part in a sponsored Zumba fitness session.
The MP donned his Lycra after being challenged in the recent General Election to join a session at North Walsham by a local resident.
“I wrote a promise on the back of one of my Norman Lamb takes part in the Zumba fitness posters that if I was re-elected on 8 June session at North Walsham Sports Centre I would take part in the Photo: Pierre Butikofer Zumba session. Once we got the session fixed I set up an online fundraising appeal and I have been thrilled by the response from people who sponsored me. It was also great fun! says the MP.
The funds raised will go to Norwich and Central Norfolk MIND and to Cromer Food Bank.
“We’ve had lots of interest from local hotels and restaurants who want to use the very best local produce. Customers are increasingly
interested in where their food comes from and appreciate that kind of attention to detail. Scooping this award will hopefully encourage even more people to give our marmalade a taste. We’re sure they won’t be disappointed!
So, what’s next for Ollands Farm Foods? “We’ve still got a busy summer ahead of us. We will be at the Summer Fair at Wolterton Hall on Sunday 20 August and the North Norfolk Food and Drink Festival at Holkham on 2 and 3 September, as well as the usual farmer’s markets. So there’ll be plenty of opportunity for people to come along and have a taste of our award-winning marmalade, and lots of other goodies!
Ollands Farm Foods products can be found at several farm shops across Norfolk, and at selected farmer’s markets. You can also order online. Visit their website ollands-farm-foods.co.uk for more details.

Shared Parental Leave Father wins Employment Tribunal ‘he couldn’t give birth’.
Nicola Stretford, Head of Employment Law at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors.
In a recent case, the first of its kind, a father has won a case against his employer after they denied him more than two weeks paternity leave and therefore failed to allow him the full paternity rights of which he was entitled. His employer argued that Mr Ali was not entitled to additional leave because
Mr Ali won his case, after the Tribunal said that his employer had gone against the Equality Act 2010 and had not applied the new Shared Parental Leave rules. The new parental leave rules were introduced in April 2015, and mean that parents can now share up to 50 weeks of leave and 37 weeks of pay, between them. This also applies to those who are adopting.
The Shared Parental Leave (SPL) scheme allow parents to decide how best to split their parental leave based on their

circumstances and creates equal opportunity for both mum and dad.
So long as you are eligible, your employer cannot lawfully deny you shared parental leave. You should first check whether you are eligible and then give notice of your intentions to your employer. In order to ascertain whether or not you are eligible they will require the following information; • your employment status (e.g. employed or worker) • the date you started your current job • the date you finished work (if you’ve finished) • how much you earn • when you want your leave to start • how much leave you want to take
Parents are not obliged to take Shared Parental Leave. Unless they qualify for and opt into the SPL scheme the only entitlement that the child’s father (or mother’s partner) has is two weeks’ ordinary paternity leave and pay.
The SPL scheme enables mothers and primary adopters to return to work before the end of their maternity leave entitlement. The unclaimed leave can then be taken up by the other parent under the shared parental leave rules, meaning they do not have to sacrifice any remaining leave that would otherwise be available to them.
Where both parents are employed and wish to utilise shared parental leave, it is important they notify their employer at an early stage and discuss this with them in order to ensure the required steps are followed. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors have an experienced and growing Employment Law team that can advise on all areas of Employment law for businesses and individuals. RAF Air Defence Radar Museum appoints Cromer man as new manager
Gregory Hayman has been appointed as the new manager of the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum, based on the once Top Secret Neatishead RAF site at Horning in Norfolk.
The museum charts the history of Radar and Air Defence and includes 20 rooms and external exhibits from mobile radar units to a Bloodhound surface to air missile that formed the backbone of our last resort defence capability during the Cold War.
The site itself dates from the Second World War and includes a reconstructed World War II operations room and its star exhibit is the fully intact Cold War Operations Room, which is exactly as it had been when Communism collapsed in the former Soviet Union and it gradually became redundant.
Gregory has a career working for major UK institutions where he has headed up communications, most notably for Cambridge University and the British Library. Before that Gregory worked in broadcasting at the BBC, ITV and Sky News in communications and journalism roles. At the British Library, Gregory was instrumental in promoting the new building in London as a major tourist attraction. At Cambridge, Gregory headed a team responsible for, among other things, promoting the university's eight museums. Gregory has also worked in the museum and
archive sector serving as a board member for the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) in the East of England. Additionally, he has curated exhibitions across the UK and helped with the transfer of exhibitions across the world.
Gregory says: “I am thrilled to be joining this wonderful museum. It really is a tremendous honour to be leading the team here. We have over 1000 world class exhibits and the fact that the museum is housed on the original site gives it an authenticity and unique quality that some museums can only dream of. One of the first challenges is to try and open our doors on additional days so that even more people can visit. Currently, we open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the second Saturday of the month. And during this August, we will be opening on Wednesdays too.
“The museum is a bit like the Tardis, much bigger on the inside than it is appears on the outside and you can travel back in time every day to the 1940s and capture the atmosphere of the height of the Cold War. We have tremendous exhibits too including a Jaguar and a Victor cockpit".
Sir John Allison, Chairman of the Trustees and Patron of the museum said “ It is wonderful to welcome Gregory to the museum as we
embark on building on the successes of the past and to look at exciting ways of attracting new audiences including securing visits from more school groups. The museum is entirely self-funding and as well as comprising listed buildings has a unique story to tell”.
The museum, which is located on the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar site, provides a unique window into the history of radar. The base was established in 1941, and played a pivotal role in the Second World War and monitoring hostile activity in the skies until the end of the Cold War. The museum is the largest museum in North Norfolk and is a great day out for all the family. The museum is located close to Horning Village on the Broads.

National exhibition featuring First World War lifeboat rescues coming to Cromer The exhibition is touring until A national touring exhibition which recounts inspirational RNLI lifeboat rescues during the First World War will be based at the charity’s Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer this summer.
The free Hope in the Great War exhibition, which commemorates the centenary of the First World War, will be open to the public until 10 September 2017.
Funded by Arts Council England, Hope in the Great War honours the bravery of volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews who risked their lives to save others during between 1914-19, by raising awareness of six heroic lifeboat rescues.
Opening to the public from 5 August at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museum, Hope in the Great War features Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue to the ‘Pyrin and Fernebo’, which saw 33 people saved from the sea on 9 January 1917.
Hope in the Great War highlights the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the war, conveying a sense of hope with many lives saved at sea by the charity. The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during the First World War.
Other lifeboat services to feature within the exhibition include:
• The 1914 Whitby RNLI crew rescue to the wrecked hospital ship ‘HMHS Rohilla’ which saw 144 people saved from the sea. • Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer ‘SS Glenravel’ which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 Auust 1915. • RNLI Port Eynon crew’s service to the ‘Dunvegan’ that took place 1 January 1916. • The saving of 20 lives from the tanker ‘Ponus’ on 3 November 1916 by Falmouth RNLI lifeboat crew and service men. • The rescue of 23 survivors from the ‘SS Alondra’ which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two trawlers.
Jacqui Palmer, RNLI Heritage Development Manager said ‘This exhibition highlights just a few of the many volunteers who saved others while the world was at war. Bravery and volunteering is central to the ethos of the RNLI and is as relevant today as it was during World War I. RNLI volunteers answer the call for help whenever it comes. Modern crews are fully equipped and trained thanks only to donations from a generous public. We hope that this exhibition will help to inspire current and future generations of supporters and lifesavers to enable the RNLI to continue to save lives at sea.’
North Walsham Times 525 August 19th 2017
December 1918 and has already proven popular at almost 20 venues. The RNLI worked with local community groups to create inspirational artwork that interprets their own local lifesaving story. These items, The wreck of HMHS Rohilla. Whitby including a giant jigsaw, a RNLI Coxswain Thomas Langlands podcast and animation, are was awarded an RNLI Gold Medal for included in the exhibition and allow the fullest story of the Gallantry for the Rohilla rescue rescues to be told nationally, in an interactive and engaging manner.

Safe Rescue for Dogs is a locally based registered charity (registered number 1157320) which specialises in the rescue and rehabilitation of traumatised, sick and injured dogs from the UK and Romania. We believe that all dogs are equal
and all equally deserve the good things in life. We do not shy away from the old…the broken… the wonky or the damaged and our determination to help is not thwarted by geographical boundaries. We endeavour to fix what is broken…find homes for the homeless and be a voice for the voiceless. We strongly believe that every life deserves a chance and where there is life there is hope. North Walsham Times 525 August 19th 2017
North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When Mylee went back to see David for her check up, it was a relief to see that her gums were looking much healthier and she could finally come to live with us. As is often the case, moving to a new home can be slightly overwhelming for a cat and it did take a little time for her to settle. Although she and Maxwell are not yet best buddies they are gradually getting used to each other.
Mowgli, the young cat also mentioned last time, responded well to treatment and he too was given a clean bill of health and has now left for pastures new with another young cat. Both cats received excellent veterinary care from two of our very experienced and skilful vets, namely David at the Bridge and Toby at Westover.
Although we do have a waiting list for cats to come into care, sometimes we receive a plea for help that means we have to pull out all the stops and do what we can to help the person concerned and also their cats. A recent cry for help was received from a gentleman who had seen an explosion in numbers of cats in his home, from three to 30 over two years, while he had been in poor health. He contacted us in desperation asking for guidance as he did not know what to do. Stephanie called him as soon as she received the information and discovered that there were 12 kittens, young enough to come into care, plus 18 cats, all unneutered. This happened on the Wednesday. She contacted the local vets to confirm that we would pay for the adults to be neutered and for the mother cats to be blood tested, and arranged to pick up most of the kittens on the Saturday. By the time the kittens were collected, the gentleman had already taken 7 of the cats to the vets (all that they
could cope with due to other operations) and had a further four booked in for Monday. By the following Friday all cats will have been neutered. The gentleman was very grateful for our help, as he had not known who to contact and it was also helpful, from our point of view, to work with someone who recognised that he could not Violet, talkative little cat, very friendly cope and cooperated with us to who enjoys her food reach a satisfactory conclusion. He had realised that, without help, he could easily have had 90 cats to care for by the end of the year. Thankfully his health has now improved and, with help from a friend, he is now able to cope. The kittens are all in our temporary emergency pens but will move to permanent pens as and when they become vacant.

Witnessing a seizure is a difficult thing for anyone, particularly when it happening to your own beloved pets, but it is unfortunately something many owners have to see
There are a number of causes for seizuring in animals, some are unavoidable such as epilepsy or those relating to brain disorders in older pets. However, there are some instances of fitting in our patients that, with care, can be avoided.
One such case was Bramble, an 8 year old Border Terrier. Bramble was rushed into the practice after she started seizuring in the garden at home. She had no history of fits before, but on careful questioning it was found that she had eaten some mouldy food a couple of hours before. This doesn’t sound too serious, but mould produces

mycotoxins which are very poisonous to animals. We immediately instigated treatment to control the seizures, but unfortunately the first line of treatment failed to have the desired effect. The next step was to use an intravenous infusion of a stronger anti-seizure medication whilst continually monitoring her vital signs to Bramble ensure she was stable and receiving the correct dose. This heavy sedation is used to relax the muscles and the brain in the hope that once the toxins have passed the body can recover. It took over 6 hours before Bramble could be taken off the infusion and as the dose was reduced we had to monitor her for any neurological signs that may indicate the mycotoxins were still affecting her brain.

Fortunately, she recovered well and was able to go home the following day with no lasting effects.
Unfortunately, not all dogs are so lucky so it is vital that any mouldy food is disposed of carefully so that our pets can’t get access to it. The other very common cause of fitting in dogs are slug pellets. Many forms of slug pellets contain metaldehyde, which is incredibly toxic to dogs, yet there is limited warning on the packaging so please be careful and check the small print before using it. If in doubt just make sure that no pets can get access to it either on the garden or when it is in storage.

Two North Norfolk swimmers, Mark Claxton, a heating engineer from Sheringham, and Paul Robson, a swimming instructor from Trunch, are prepared for their solo English Channel swims at the end of August.
mentally. To swim the channel you have to be a member of the Channel Swimming Association, and book a pilot boat to escort you across the channel safely - this was booked 18 months ago to secure a slot for this year as a limited number of boats and dates to swim. As we are both swimming solo we have different pilots. Our projected swim time is approximately 12 hours, weather depending. This is with no contact with the boat and feeds are achieved while treading water until you reach the shores of France wearing only swim trunks, one hat and a pair of goggles. Our chosen charity is Cystic Fibrosis which is very close to Mark’s heart, as his niece has this condition’.
Mark and Paul, members of North Norfolk Crawlers have increased their training over the last year in preparation for swimming 21 miles solo across the English Channel.
Training has involved both sea and swimming pool. Pool training with distances of up to 10km swims once a week, with an overall distance of 30km a week. Sea training has consisted of short swims over the winter months of up to 15 mins in 5o C water temperature to help with cold water acclimatisation. ‘Swim times in the sea have lengthened as the water temperature has risen to achieve our qualifying swim of 6 hours in water temperature 15.5o C and under, which is required before any attempt. Our maximum swim time is a continuous 8 hours. After achieving these swims, you are ready to go, physically and

It has since been proven that not only carbon is shared, but a myriad of nutrients and chemical signals.
By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
Have you heard of mycorrhiza? These are beneficial fungal networks that connect to tree roots and provide them with nutrients from the soil in exchange for food that the tree produces. This beneficial relationship between organisms is called a symbiosis. This network of fungus does more than just help out a tree. Entire forests are connected by these fungal
