Star Wars Supports Kidney Research

Wednesday 16th August saw the return of Cromer Carnival, and this year, kidney transplant patient Paul Welsh enlisted the help of ‘The Norwich Star Wars Club’.

Paul Welsh, a father-of-two from North Walsham, is an ambassador for raising awareness for the need of organ donation. Diagnosed with kidney disease as a child, he had to have dialysis, which did the job of cleaning his blood. Family life was heavily disrupted, having to travel frequently to hospital for checks and for his three times a week dialysis; he was often left feeling unwell and tired.

Paul has been lucky enough to receive three transplants. The first, in 1997, failed after five years. His wife, Mandy, donated one of her kidneys in 2008, but his body rejected it after 18 months. Following numerous phone calls from Addenbrooke’s Hospital about possible donor organs, which, after further tests, were ruled out, he finally received another kidney on 2014, which is still going strong.

PASTON SURGERY WILL BE HOLDING A WALK IN SESSION FOR FLU VACCINATIONS (ELIGIBLE PATIENTS)

FRIDAY 13TH OCTOBER 08.45 a.m. - 16.30 p.m.

Star Wars Support Kidney Research

Continued from front cover... As a result of his experiences, Paul decided to raise awareness of kidney disease and the need for more organ donors. He has since become a Community Champion for Kidney Research UK, is part of The Organ Donation Services Team at Norwich, and works with other Kidney Charities endeavouring to raise funds and awareness of the disease and the issues surrounding it, including the misconception that a transplant is a complete cure; instead, it is only a treatment of a condition. Paul says he will often hear people say “Great you’re back to normal,” not realising he is reliant on taking various medications every day to suppress his immune system to stop his body rejecting the transplant, or the fear when anyone coughs or sneezes in his direction.

ONCE AGAIN WE WILL NOT BE SENDING OUT LETTERS TO PATIENTS

THE SURGERY WILL BE CLOSED FOR ROUTINE APPOINTMENTS ON THE ABOVE DAY, SHOULD YOU REQUIRE A DOCTOR IN AN EMERGENCY PLEASE CONTACT THE SURGERY IN THE USUAL WAY FOR ALL OTHER ENQUIRIES PLEASE CONTACT THE SURGERY AS USUAL

During the day, Paul, along with several members of his family, had a stand on the field. With competitions such as “Guess the number of sweets in the Jar” and “Guess the name of the Teddy”, the aim was to not only raise money for their cause, but to raise awareness of kidney failure, the lack of organs available on the Organ Donor register, and life after a kidney or any other organ transplant.

The real excitement came in the evening, when the greatly anticipated Grand Carnival Parade took place. Paul, along with some of the nurses and patients from the Cromer Dialysis Unit, where he was treated for many years, teamed up with The Norwich Star Wars club, creating a show stopping float for the parade. Amongst the team was Darth Vader dialysing, demonstrating that even the most evil of villains might need to rely on dialysis to live. Even Jar Jar Binks and Princess Leia made an appearance to show their support.

The float was a huge success; the team placing first in their group. But the battle for more organ donors continues.

• Over 6000 people are currently waiting for a transplant. • 22 people die every day while waiting for a transplant. • 1 organ donor can save 8 lives and change the lives of more than 50 people.

Norfolk to Africa

Originally from Africa’s Ivory Coast, Eunice Krokasset became the landlady of The Crown, a 15th Century Coaching Inn in Smallburgh and is a much-loved member of the village’s close-knit community. Through several conversations, she wanted to invite the locals to experience her country and culture. So in November, a group of 19 people of all ages from Smallburgh and surrounding areas are embarking on a cultural trip to the Cote D’Ivoire in West Africa (the people on the trip are paying for their trip! Many of the trippers have also donated massively in addition to their trip costs) Eunice had the vision to leave a legacy of the trip in the form of a double decker bus filled with resources to enable the children of the Ivory Coast to expand their knowledge and understanding of England. The resources, such as educational books, laptops, scientific equipment, sports kits and clothing, are being donated by sponsors, schools, local businesses and individuals. The plan is to pack them into the bus and be shipped to Abidjan prior to the trip taking place.

As the group tours the country, they will meet with the Chiefs of the villages, the Mayors of the towns and the people that live in Cote D’Ivoire. They intend to donate resources such as sports equipment, educational books and equipment, stationery and toys that have been boxed up ready to each of the towns and villages that are visited. They aim to give letters written by schoolchildren in Norfolk to the schools in Cote D’Ivoire to hopefully set up links that can enable a sharing of cultures. Their next fundraising event is on 9 September and will be An Auction of Promises at Smallburgh Village Hall – see website www.norfolk2africa.org.uk for details. There will also be food, drink music.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support takes place next month with many events both big and small taking place nationally and locally. Money raised not only goes towards funds to provide support for those suffering from cancer but also to those around them. Did you know that if you hold a Coffee Morning and the money is paid into the Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Bank Account then the money is ring-fenced to be spent in North Norfolk? If you would like the proceeds of your Coffee Morning - or any other fundraising event that you are holding for Macmillan - to stay in North Norfolk, please contact Diane Evans 01263 823889 or diane@opengolfclubcompettions.co.uk for more information. Grease 2 x 20cm/8in sandwich tins and line the bases. Blend the cocoa and boiling water together; add the remaining ingredients, except the chocolate and cream, and beat until mixture is smooth and thick. Divide the mixture between the two tins and level the mixture. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for 25-30 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and peel off the lining paper and leave until cold.

Make the filling and icing by breaking the chocolate into squares into a heat proof bowl and adding the cream, set over a saucepan of gently simmering water to melt together stirring constantly until completely smooth. (Do not allow the bowl to touch the simmering water). Allow to cool until it reaches a spreading consistency.

Sandwich the sponges together with some of the icing and spread the remainder on the top of the cake.

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Let me translate: Could a text become your Will?

Recent headlines have indicated that people will be able to use voicemail and text message to make their Wills, under a radical overhaul of law proposed by the Government’s legal advisors.

The Law Commission has branded the current system of Will-making as ‘outdated’ and recommends that it be revolutionised to keep up with the digital age. At present, to be valid a Will must be signed by the testator (the person making the Will) in the presence of two witnesses, who are all together at the time and also sign the Will.

The new proposals would allow a judge to decide, on the balance of probabilities, whether a recording or a note is an accurate summary of the deceased person’s wishes. Even deathbed changes of heart could be recorded and used to override an existing valid will.

This sounds like a heyday for contentious probate lawyers!

However, like all such things, it is not quite as it first appears. The consultation document argues that this should apply not only to traditional written documents, but also where testators express their testamentary intentions

in an electronic format, as well as in an audio or audio-visual recording.

The Law Commission admits that these proposed changes could increase family arguments as relatives trawl through their departed loved-one’s technology for evidence of a change of mind to their benefit.

The consultation adds that: “A person who is seriously ill in hospital may have more immediate access to a tablet or smartphone than to a pen or paper, and may be more able to speak than to write. On the other hand, the potential recognition of electronic documents could prove a treasure trove for dissatisfied relatives. They may be tempted to sift through a huge number of texts, emails and other records in order to find one that could be put forward as a will on the basis of a dispensing power.”

These powers already exist in Australia, Canada, South Africa and several US states.

In the wake of these announcements, caution has been urged both by lawyers and olderperson’s special-interest groups amid concerns that the elderly and vulnerable could be even more subject to undue influence. Questions of updating tests as to mental capacity have also been raised by replacing current Victorian-era law with the principles of the modern Mental

North Walsham Times 526 September 2nd 2017

Capacity Act.

One thing is certain, however, that the hasty and ill-judged making of a Will can only cause distress, cost and delay for those left to sort it out. It is not the preparation of the document that is the main cost of a professionally-drawn Will but the benefit of knowledge, experience, attention-to-detail and professional indemnity insurance.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.

Visions of Vienna

The concert, presents the men and boys’ choir of St Nicholas, North Walsham - the last amateur men and boys’ choir in Norfolk - in an exciting and varied programme of music, with a first half built around two of the pillars of classical music Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then a second half featuring compositions across the breadth of English composition over the centuries. There is guaranteed to be something for all tastes, whether a fan of classical music, choral singing or experiencing it for one the first times.

The ‘Little Organ Mass’ by Joseph Haydn is particularly renowned for its beautiful ‘Benedictus’ solo, which is normally sung by a solo soprano but in this concert will be sung by the boys line en-masse, adding a delicate beauty to it. The concert is accompanied by Matthew Bond and directed once again by David Ballard who has now been Director of Music at St Nicholas since 2012 and currently oversees the choir of 18 boys and 14 men.

It is an exciting time for the church, with visits to Leicester and Norwich Cathedrals planned in 2018, and advanced plans for the formation of a separate singing line for girl choristers in January 2017, meaning that all youngsters in North Walsham and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to participate in high quality music making for free. Admission is £7 for adults, and under 16’s are free. Refreshments will be available, and all proceeds from the concert go towards funding the choir’s future activities. 10

Bittern Line 20th Anniversary An organisation that promotes a Norfolk railway line celebrated its 20th anniversary by holding a week long series of events. The Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership CRP), which helps to promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham rail line, celebrated its 20th anniversary with special events, including live music, guided walks and craft sessions. More celebrations are planned for later in the year, too. Over the last 20 years, the CRP has played an invaluable role in supporting and developing projects to promote the line, build community links, improve station facilities and upgrade train services.

As a result, passenger journeys on the line have more than tripled since 1997 from around 200,000 journeys a year to more than 600,000 journeys a year.

Jonathan Denby, Head of Corporate Affairs for Greater Anglia said “We’re very pleased to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership. The CRP has been a great success, working closely with successive train operators to help promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham line. Its proactive support has strengthened local links and has helped to increase passenger journeys on the line over the last two decades. With the prospect of brand new, high quality trains in 2019/20, there are great opportunities for the CRP to help the line continue to thrive, to the benefit of both customers and local communities.”

Peter Mayne, Chairman of the Bittern Line CRP said "We are hugely proud and excited to be celebrating

our 20th birthday. 50 years after closure of the line was contemplated, the Partnership, with support from the communities we serve, has ensured that the line has gone from strength to strength. “This is an opportune time for rail travel between Norwich and Sheringham with a growing population in towns and villages along the route and brand new longer trains arriving shortly." The Bittern Line CRP was launched in 1997, as part of a joint initiative between Anglia Railways and Norfolk County Council, aimed at revitalising the important rail link between Norwich and the North Norfolk coast.

It has also helped successive train operators to significantly increase service frequency on weekday afternoons, evenings and at weekends, provide additional station facilities such as ticket machines, customer information screens and cycle parking and enhance community links, with additional capacity for special events and better coordination for Paston College students. The line is set to benefit from significant investment during Greater Anglia’s nine year franchise. The operator plans to introduce a complete new fleet of trains in 2019/20, with more seats, air conditioning, wi-fi and plug points. Greater Anglia also plans to install ticket machines at all stations on the route, providing even more opportunities to encourage rail travel and support tourism and the local economy.

as part of its new franchise, whilst the CRP also benefits from support from local authorities including Norfolk County Council, Broadland District Council and North Norfolk District Council. The CRP also works closely with attractions along the route including the Bure Valley Railway and the North Norfolk Railway and connects with the Coast Hopper bus service to make public transport a convenient option for many journeys in North Norfolk.

Outstanding A Level and BTEC Results including a record success. The College continues to improve pass rate for Paston students learning facilities for young people wanting to

Students at Paston Sixth Form College achieved impressive A Level and BTEC results when they were published on Thursday 17 August, improving yet again on the previous year.

Paston’s A Level pass rate improved from 98.4% to 99.3% with 80% achieving A*-C grades, up 2% on the previous year, and 52.8% achieving top A*-B top grades.

At BTEC, students achieved 100% pass rates, with 63% gaining top grades.

We were particularly pleased that 24 out of 28 A Level subjects had a 100% pass rate and 20 A Level subjects had over 50% of students achieving top A*-B grades.

Kevin Grieve, Principal, said “I am extremely proud of our wonderful students who achieved the challenge we set them to improve on last year’s results. Our 2017 results are outstanding and I am very proud of all the students and staff at the College.

The results clearly reflect our recent Ofsted

inspection report and what inspectors witnessed at our amazing College. Ofsted said

He continued “These outstanding results reflect our encouragement of students to work hard, have high aspirations and develop the skills to be extremely successful. Universities throughout the country will be receiving talented young graduates from Paston this autumn. We have also had a record number of students gaining a place at Oxbridge.

Outstanding A Level and BTEC results achieved by motivated hard working students expertly and enthusiastically taught by specialist teachers. Well done to all involved.

A Walk Alone

Victoria Mansbridge grew up in the Midlands, where her family and friends are all based and where she met her husband “but my husband and I always harboured a dream of living by the sea. About 14 years ago we were out for a walk one evening and we thought 'if we don't do this now, we never will!' we'd run out of excuses not to...so we packed our bags, sold the house and headed for the coast. Originally, we moved to Wales, transferring over to Norfolk around 13 years ago. We love this area, we love the sea, the countryside, the great big skies and how friendly everyone is.

Ever since I was little I’ve been writing short stories and little pieces here and there – I always dreamed of one day having a novel published. I actually wrote A Walk Alone over 10 years ago...it took me a long time to build up the courage to let anyone else read it. Now it is being published, I'm so happy and excited. Jarrold has very kindly agreed to stock the book - walking into the shop and seeing it on the shelf will be a lifelong dream come true!

A Walk Alone is about Emma, a woman struggling with a guilt that should not be hers. She is trapped in her own misplaced culpability and the book explores the choices she makes based on the path she has put herself on.

As mentioned above, the book is available at Jarrold, Amazon...and all good bookstores.

Pop Up People’s Theatre to launch in North Walsham Town Centre with spooky goings on evening economy in the town centre.”

Regular theatre will be making a comeback in North Walsham this October, with a season of shows all taking place in a new pop up theatre initiative, which will be run by a group of volunteers with New Stages, who currently run North Norfolk Youth Theatre, North Walsham People’s Choir and the town’s adult acting classes.

The function room of the Black Swan, down Black Swan Loke, will be transformed into a temporary theatre for October to December this year. The theatre will launch on 22 October with a ‘spooky season’ which will include theatre shows from the People’s Theatre Company in the form of Jack the Ripper: a radio play, a series of ghost stories with North Norfolk Youth Theatre called The House and the Infamous Covert

Cabaret night of song and comedy. The popular ghost walks around the town centre will also return to help with promotions and raise funds for the theatre programme.

Joseph Ballard, director of New Stages and the Pop Up People’s Theatre said “The Pop Up Theatre is all about presenting shows for North Walsham and the surrounding area - always ensuring a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and top shows that will be made in North Walsham for North Walsham. It’s great to be presenting home-grown live theatre in the town, which is something I have championed for a few years with different shows and events. This is a really exciting opportunity for the community to get involved and support us, to ensure that North Walsham is known for good things to attract visitors, entertain locals and start building the

After the Halloween events, the Pop Up People’s Theatre will keep going with the promise something big in the form of Jack And The Beanstalk in December as they hail the return of Christmas pantomime. All the Halloween shows and the pantomime will be written and directed by Joseph Ballard. The Black Swan have partnered with New Stages to bring the theatre to life and the Showcase Gallery, long supporters of past productions will continue to act as their town centre box office.

Tickets can be bought in person from the Showcase Gallery, online or by calling 01692 404533. More information about the shows can be found at www.northwalshampeoplestheatre.org.uk and from show leaflets which can be found around town in shops, cafes, the Showcase Gallery and the library.

music. Join in the glorious harmonies of world music, pop, spirituals and much more. There is no need to book in advance, you can just come along on the day. Refreshments including - chocolate biscuits! - are provided, and the sessions are free of charge, although donations are welcome.

SYHO is NOT a choir! The singing workshops are drop-in sessions to promote good mental health and well-being, and are open to anyone over 18 who likes the idea of singing in a group. Singing with others really lifts the spirits. People with experience of mental health problems and challenges are always especially welcome.

These award winning workshops have been running for 12 years, first in Norwich, then expanding to Attleborough, Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth. Now people in North Norfolk also have a chance to benefit from what SYHO offers.

SYHO is run by volunteers but the sessions are led by experienced, professional voice coaches used to working with varied groups in a community setting. You don’t need to have a good voice or be able to read

Salvation Army North Walsham Wanted - Budding Child Actors & Singers

The Salvation Army in North Walsham are looking for children aged 7-12 to take part in a new Christmas kids musical called 'It's a party' .

The musical will be performed at the Atrium Theatre in the town on Saturday 16 December, and rehearsals would be on Mondays at the Army Hall on Hall Lane, North Walsham. The first rehearsal and registration will take place on Monday 18 September at 4.30pm.

'We want children of all experience and abilities who enjoy having fun, singing and possibly drama to be part of this exciting project' says Major Richard Durrant of the Salvation Army Corps. The musical follows the success of two previous productions 'A Fishy Tale' in 2015 and then 'Giant Slayer' last summer.

'This time though we are to perform a Christmas musical' Richard says 'and it is packed with great script and lots of lively and fun songs'. Anyone interested can just turn up on Monday 18 September or if they want to know more can contact Richard on 01692 652263 or e-mail richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk

Charity shop goes from Strength to Strength

The Salvation Army charity shop in Church Street North Walsham is welcoming more and more customers in recent months, including lots of younger customers, thanks to many younger volunteers and the vision and ideas of manager Steve Mortlock, and a great team of volunteers. A new 'swing sign' is going up to help people find the shop, which is open six days per week, and prides itself on selling quality goods and clothing at bargain prices.

From September the shop are going to be selling very reasonable Christmas card packs including ones depicting the nativity scene which are not easy to come by now. 'It seems to me a real shame that Christmas cards these days so rarely depict the true meaning of Christmas' says Major Richard Durrant, of the Salvation Army ‘and so we are making these available with proceeds going to support our local community work, including helping many families through our 'Toys and Tins' campaign, which we do every Christmas' he adds.

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB

In July, Club Members gathered at The Beechwood Hotel for Afternoon Tea to ‘officially’ celebrate the birthday of Club President, Janet Attew. After a lovely tea (and the rain had stopped) some members enjoyed a look around the hotel gardens.

Last week, a group of members President receiving Bouquet from Marilyn enjoyed a very relaxing trip on the Broads, complete with a wonderful commentary - all of us learned things we hadn't known about. It was a lovely sunny afternoon with rain kindly holding off until later.

Our next Club Meeting is on 28 September at The Catholic Church Hall, when Linda Smith will be visiting us for the first time from her home in Nottingham. Her demonstration is called ‘The Italian Job’ doors open 1.30pm for refreshments. The demonstration begins at 2.30pm. All welcome.

Tickets have been selling very well for our Open Meeting/Afternoon Tea at The Atrium on 26 October. Lee Berrill Florist/Floral Designer is demonstrating ‘Let’s Dance’ at 2pm, which will be followed by full Afternoon Tea. This is a ticket only event so let me know if you are interested.

Recordings studios, videographers and a whole lot of rockabilly fever!

A 100 person clan of Norfolk residents prancing around the outskirts of Norwich, clad in leather jackets and singing their hearts out is not an image immediately conjured when painting a picture of the local area...

However, if you happen to peak behind the scenes of Invidia Voices, a growing choir currently based around Norfolk, you might happen upon some of the choir goers filming for their upcoming music video! The choir are filming a music video in an original arrangement based on the song ‘Happy’. This is a chance for the choir goers to feel like stars and show us all what they are made of in the process. The finished video shall be published online and the group plan to donate to Children in 24

Need from any proceeds.

Good news for all interested readers as the choir runs a weekly group in North Walsham on a Monday evening. There are no auditions and the group’s philosophy is fun! If you enjoy a good ol sing-a-long, are keen for karaoke or are just intrigued, book yourself in for a one of two free taster sessions in the Anex of the Atrium performance centre, North Walsham High School!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are always very busy at this time of year with lots of kittens coming into care for various reasons. Whatever the reason, we try to help as it is important to make sure that they get safe and caring homes. It is also important to make sure that the new family are aware that they are making a commitment for the lifetime of the cat and that they could be responsible for its welfare for up to 20 years.

Sometimes people’s circumstances change and they cannot continue to care for their pet and, in these instances, we are only too happy to help as, when a cat is re-homed, we always advise them to contact us if, for whatever reason, they are no longer able to look after their cat. Most other cat charities we have contact with prefer to take a cat back into their care too. However, we are aware this does not always happen and a recent example occurred when Irene, one of our fosterers, was visiting the vets with one of our cats. A lady came in with an older cat requesting that the cat be put to sleep as she did not want it. As Irene has been hoping to offer a home to an older pet, she was interested in taking the cat on and the lady, who was not the owner, kindly agreed to hand it over to us so that Irene could adopt it. On checking the paperwork, we discovered it had only recently been re-homed by another charity and, on contacting them; they were horrified to learn what had happened. Like us, they would have been only

too happy to take the cat back once they had a space.

When a cat is handed into our care that has previously been re-homed by another charity (or even another branch of Cats Protection) we always like to check up to make sure they are happy with the arrangement, and similarly, other charities and branches of Cats Protection Dolly and Barnaby just contact us when a cat is handed into their care. waiting to be chosen Our main point of contact for Cats Protection locally is the Dereham Adoption Centre with whom we have shared many calls recently, mainly about re-homing kittens, but that is another story.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.

Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.

body of the tick is removed. At Toll Barn Vets tick removal is one of our free of charge procedures for our clients to help keep your pets in tip top condition.

The Tick Tick List! • Ensure pets are treated regularly with an effective tick treatment as per manufacturers guidelines • Brush or wash pets after walks to remove unattached ticks • Check pets thoroughly daily and contact your vet if any attached ticks are found • Remove any attached ticks as soon as possible after finding them

Don’t forget, we are here to help so if you are battling with keeping your pet tick free this year please give the Toll Barn Vets team a call on 01692 407126.

How can we protect our pets? In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between four and 12 weeks depending on the product chosen. Many of the most effective treatments can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and so we would advise contacting your vet to discuss the most suitable treatment for your pet. At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we understand that choosing the correct flea and tick protection for your pet is a minefield and so offer our clients free of charge parasite protection consultations with our qualified veterinary nurses to enable us to formulate the perfect parasite prevention program for your pet.

Ticks found on your pet should be removed as soon as possible using a tick remover to ensure that the mouth parts do not remain within the skin once the

The Vikings start their campaign on 2 September with a tough home fixture against relegated Colchester kick off 3pm. They are also at home the following week to Saffron Walden.

There are changes in playing personnel. Those leaving include Ethan Benny and Jono Lawson (returned to New Zealand), Chris Kent (Sudbury) and John Younie (Bury St. Edmunds). Also absent will be the hugely influential Matt Hodgson, out injured for the season. Second row Lawson and fly half Hodgson will be particularly hard to replace, though in Jake Duffield the Club does have a very able replacement for the latter. Scrum half Will Findlay is available September only whilst Jordan Mustard is unlikely to figure due to work commitments. The Club is still looking for local players keen to step up

the Leagues as Mustard successfully did last season. "They are assured of a very warm welcome," said Head of Rugby James Brooks.

Amongst newcomers are New Zealander Roydon Miller ( second or back row forward), Australian Lachlan Brown - Bates (prop), South African UEA student Will Swart ( flanker or hooker) and hooker Jake Callender from Fullerians. Backs Freddie Henley - Hunter and Will Quinn have rejoined, brothers Hal (centre) and Jim Riley (winger/full back) have moved from Holt, Norfolk born winger Dan Smith from Winchester and Australian winger/ full back Adam Howell has just begun training. The Youth and Minis get underway on Sunday 3 September 10am at Scottow when newcomers are very welcome - no need to have played rugby before.

Pupils given the chance to benefit from top-class sports coaching North Norfolk District Council-funded scheme aims to build on last year’s fantastic success

Parents of children preparing to start secondary school are being encouraged to put forward nominations for a sporting excellence programme in North Norfolk.

Last year’s inaugural Sporting Centre of Excellence scheme proved to be a great success, and North Norfolk District Council is funding the project once again this September.

The aim is to recruit young people who have the potential to excel in a sport and give them an excellent coaching experience and the opportunity to achieve their sporting dreams. This year’s scheme will start at the beginning of the forthcoming academic year, with a focus on attracting Year 6 pupils starting high school.

The pilot in 2016 saw more than 70 youngsters, aged 11 to 14, attend 24 weeks of coaching at Gresham’s School, Holt. They were given specialist coaching across four sports - hockey, netball, cricket and running.

The success of the programme resulted in nine athletes being selected to represent Norfolk in cross-country, a haul of medals at the Norfolk Track and Field Championships, three cricketers picked for county squad training sessions and hockey and netball players invited to join top clubs. All the district’s secondary schools were represented and, perhaps most importantly,
