National effort to restore unique Norfolk canal Canal fans from across Britain, and even further afield, have been giving up their summer holidays to help restore part of Norfolk’s heritage. More than 30 volunteers have been taking part in a Waterways Recovery Group (WRG) camp on part of the unique North Walsham and Dilham Canal. The waterway is Norfolk’s only sailing canal with locks. The workforce has spent two weeks rebuilding the derelict spillway - or overflow - at Ebridge, just above the dilapidated lock. Once finished, the restored spillway will make it easier to control water levels along the 19th century waterway, which fell into disrepair after the last wherry sailed it in 1934.
The work at Ebridge, coupled with the newly-restored spillway 1.29 miles away at Royston and the almost-complete restoration of the lock at Bacton Wood Mill, means that it will soon be possible to water a dry section of the canal, between Pigney’s Wood and Spa Common.
The added section will mean that a 3.7km (2.3 mile) stretch of the canal, originally nearly nine miles long, will have been re-opened, thanks to supporters and canal owners, over the past 17 years. Work on the Royston spillway was carried out by volunteer work parties organised by the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust. They spent 851 hours over three months
clearing, levelling and bricking the spillway, working at an angle of 45 deg. A paid workforce on a basic wage would have earned about £6,000 in that time. Bob Crow, who led the second week of the WRG camp, said they would complete about 60% of the work needed to finish the Ebridge spillway.
Waterway Recovery Group Among the volunteers volunteers at work lining Ebridge spillway was Evelyne Laveaux slope with bricks. who had travelled from Continued on page 4... her home in north-east France to help.

National effort to restore unique Norfolk canal
Continued from front cover... “I am very much interested in conservation and restoration and I am a teacher of English in France so this allows me to combine both interests, and practise my English,” she said. “It’s varied work and it’s an opportunity to learn things I didn’t know - like bricklaying.” The WRG group stayed in North Walsham Scout Hut during their camp and fitted in trips to Norwich and Cromer.
Other volunteers, who included young people completing their Duke of Waterway Recovery Edinburgh Group volunteers clear some of gold awards, the weed clogged in and came from places around the derelict including Ebridge lock. Cardiff, Lichfield, London, Sheffield and Lancaster.
Tom Adams, from Lichfield, helps with the task of bricking the Ebridge spillway slope.
Mr Crow said they had spent the first part of the camp ripping out concrete and bricks placed over the spillway as part of Second World War defences. The hardest job had been rolling the ground to compact it, working on a 30 deg incline. They had then reinstated the French volunteer Evelyne crest wall at Laveaux (right) helping to reinstate the Ebridge spillway. the top of the structure and had finally worked on brick-facing the weir slope. Dom McKenna, from “I like to be outside doing something practical Lancaster, at work and as much bricking the Ebridge as anything it’s spillway slope. enjoyable because of the banter with everyone else,” said Mr Crow, from Brightlingsea. The WRG workers had attracted a lot of attention from the many dog walkers, canoeists, fishermen and other Canal users. Following the refusal of the planning applications for housing on farmland to the west of North Walsham, which raised serious traffic and road safety concerns and objections, we are pressing for safety improvements to Aylsham and Skeyton New Roads so children can walk and cycle safely to school and visit friends and playground - and parents can let them do this without fear and worry! A meeting of Councillors and the Police is to be held in early October with Norfolk County Council Highways Officers to discuss a list of actions we are proposing to calm traffic in the area and provide a safer environment for all road users - pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike A campaign to promote action supported by the Town Council, SNAP (Safer Neighbourhood Action Partnership) and local businesses, in particular local transport companies, as well as the national body, Living Streets, is being launched with local people at 9.30am on Wednesday 27 September at the junction of Aylsham and Station Roads where new campaign publicity on the streets will be unveiled

Our garden maintenance department is now open and we offer a full fence erection service with close board and fancy European & picket fence panels, plus gates.
North Norfolk District Council has received reports of people being asked to hand over their bank details by these third parties – all for providing a service that is actually free for householders. Employing one of these companies does not help or influence the outcome of an appeal, and is a complete waste of money.

Residents across North Norfolk are being warned to avoid paying private companies that charge for appealing against council-tax bands.
What makes matters even worse in this instance is that some of these third parties are trying to impose a fee simply for filling out a form, regardless of whether the application to lower the council-tax band proves successful or not.
For a very competitive and no obligation quote on all types of garden work call:Steve on 01692 406020 Mobile 07917 692291
Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Cabinet member for Revenues and Benefits, said “If you are a council-tax payer and you want to appeal your council-tax band, it is easy to do this yourself and there is absolutely no charge for doing so.
“Some private operators are very clever at selling their services, but signing up with them means paying an unnecessary fee and receiving absolutely nothing in return that council-tax payers can’t do themselves.
NNDC warns people to be wary of all cold-callers, especially those demanding bank details. People should never hand over their bank details or other personal information in situations such as this and should always make further inquiries if in any doubt.
To apply for a council-tax re-evaluation, visit www.gov.uk/council-tax-appeals/challengeyour-band or call 03000 501501.

North Walsham and District Historical Society Toc H ‘Its History and Origins’- Speaker : Steve Smith
Steve began his talk by giving us a brief explanation of Toc H and its origins.
Toc H is an international Christian movement. The name is an abbreviation for Talbot House, 'Toc' signifying the letter T in the signals spelling alphabet used by the British Army in World War I. A soldiers' rest and recreation centre named Talbot House was founded in December 1915 at Poperinge, Belgium by the Reverend Phillip (Tubby) Clayton an army Chaplin who was sent to France and then on to Belgium.
Located a few miles back from the trenches around Ypres, it was a busy transfer station where troops on their way to and from the battlefields were billeted. Clayton was instructed to set up some sort of rest house for the troops
Renting a hop merchant's house to set up his temporarily base, Tubby decided to steer away from the traditional church club and set up an Everyman’s House. Talbot House soon became known by its initials TH, and then, in the radio

Hedgehog Haven
Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals - they only come out during the day if there is a problem unless it seems to have a purpose and is going somewhere.
Second litters are now being born, so an active hedgehog could be a sign of a mother out foraging while her hoglets are asleep.
If in doubt please ring a rescue centre or BHPS for advice. Marian Grimes

01692 409082 n o r f o lk p o w e r w a s h i n g@ gm a il . c o m made the rest and assembled the chair”.
‘Take Your Seat ‘ - A History of Chairs by Tony Moore
Tony introduced himself and explained his talk would focus on ‘Country Chairs’. Initially he was a Primary School head master, and had always enjoyed working with his hands, especially in wood. While recuperating from an operation he saw an advertisement for a chair making course and signed up to it.
Many years ago, high back chairs were a status symbol, only the Master and his Lady would sit in chairs, everybody else sat on benches or stools. Strangers Hall in Norwich only contains one chair but many benches.
After the fire of London in 1666, seventy thousand people were made homeless and provided much work for various trades in manufacturing cloths and furnishings. Craftsmen such as Chippendale, who was a cabinet maker, were in great demand and
became famous for their quality of work. Much of his work survives and is to be found in large old grand houses.
By 1700, skilled craftsmen were making tables and chairs using green timber which necessitated them working in woodlands where material was plentiful. They produced turned items using a pole lathe. In particular, they were made in the beech from forests that surrounded places such as High Wycombe.
In 1900 ‘Country Chairs’ became popular, especially the all wooden wheel backed Windsor chair, which were assembled without using any nails.
Tony went on to explain the various tradesman manufacturing chairs, such as a “bodger shapes legs and spindles on a pole lathe, up to sixty a day, a bottomer shaping seats in wood and a former who
He displayed many of the tools used in chair making, such as an adze, drawknife, spokeshave, scoop or inershave (a very curved drawknife) and a trapping plane (rather like large pencil sharpeners) for making tapered spindles. Woods used in chair making are elm, ash, plane and beech but not oak, which is hard and splits easily. Yew chairs are highly prized.
In addition to the wheeled back Windsor chair, its curved back is achieved by steaming the wood and bending around a shaped wooden block, backed up by a bending iron on the outside. He also displayed two versions of ladder back chairs, all made by him. These are much lighter than the Windsor and have seats made of sea grass or reel ruch. The next months talk is ‘The Royal British Legion’.

Doust’s comedy has been written for a man to play Lady Bracknell, thus further emphasising the ‘pantomime dame’ elements of the character’s snobbery and obsession with social standing.

Car Boot Sale in North Walsham
The sun shone on Bank Holiday Monday 28 August on the 35+ pitches at the North Walsham Car Boot Sale (in aid of North Walsham Play).
The first car boot for some time in the town, saw the town centre closed off to traffic and instead filled with eager car boot sellers looking to do a brisk trade on the bank holiday. Stallholders lined the street from top to bottom with no spare space.
Buyers attended in their hundreds, with many estimating over 1000 people coming along to grab a bargain or two.
Trustee and Founder of North Walsham Play, Matthew Smith, said that he was over the moon to see the event be so well received by the local community. He added “it’s brilliant to be able to bring such a popular event to the town centre whilst at the same time raise much needed funds for the work of North Walsham Play. It’s always
hard to find new and different events to offer but I feel that this car boot has been just as successful as previous events the charity has run”.
Memorial Park (close to the Community Centre).
North Walsham Play wishes to pay thanks to North Walsham Town Council and the markets manager, Nigel Clarke, for the support given leading upto and during the event.
North Walsham Play (Charity Number 1167444) was formed in 2016 to raise much needed funds to bring about new and exciting play parks across the town, with a focus on ensuring accessibility to all and inclusive play for children of all ages. The first project was to bring about a small fully accessible play park at Woodville.
This was completed earlier this year. The committee are now working hard to raise £90,000 needed to completely replace the small play park within the

Mayor’s charity benefits from Sunday Market
NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
Everyone at North Walsham in Bloom is really looking forward to our Coffee Morning at St Benets Hall on Thursday 28 September. We now have some items for sale with photos of our flower beds and displays on them - ideal Christmas presents. The items range from two choices of mugs at £1.99 each to 7” teddies with vests showing our sunflower motto at £4.75 each. We will also have articles suitable for Christmas presents (not plants) for which we will only be asking for a donation. How good is that?
The North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme, which has now been operating for two years, was one of the Mayor’s chosen charities in 2016/17.
Recently a cheque for £550 raised by the monthly Sunday Farmers Market was presented to NWGNS Treasurer Linda Groves.
Peter Tobitt, NWGNS Chairman commented “We are very grateful to Barry Hester for choosing the scheme as one of his charities during his tenure as Mayor. As we only receive funds from grants and donations, the money is a very welcome boost to our finances.
As we go forward into the third year of providing assistance to North Walsham residents in many varied ways, we can look back on having helped 180 residents with 520 jobs. All this could only happen with the help of a growing core team of 24 volunteers.”
The Good Neighbour Scheme will be at the Sunday Farmers Market on 29 October. Do come along and see us either to find out more about how we can help local residents or how you can help as a volunteer.
We are now getting ready for our autumn planting which will start on 17 October, but we have a lot of work to do first. The planting this year will include a lot of cyclamen: there will be 120 in the cross and a total of nearly 300 around the town.
Walker raising money for RNLI reaches Cromer
We started on the Post Office bed on 5 September, so by the time you read this it should be looking a lot better.
Alex has always had a love of the water and spent a lot of his spare time either in the sea or inland. So he thought fundraising for the RNLI would be an excellent charity to support. With only 500 miles left to walk of his epic target, Alex is looking forward to finishing his task and returning home. In the past week he has raised over £1000 in Norfolk, which will be added to the £60000 he has had donated so far.
Alex Ellis-Roswell set off in 2014 to walk the coast of the UK to raise money for the RNLI. He left Margate to walk 9500 miles, hoping that sponsorship of £10 per mile would mean he could donate £95000 to the RNLI.
We have been given 250 crocuses by the Rotary Organisation and a further large quantity of daffodils from a supporter.
Finally, very many thanks to all the people who give us donations when we are working in the town. Now that we have these extra areas to prepare and plant up the gifts from our supporters are much appreciated.
With an estimated finish date of November, Alex will be walking onto Happisburgh, then Gorleston and the other stations along the Suffolk and Essex Coast. Alex was welcomed to Cromer RNLI by crew members and their offers of meals and overnight accommodation.
We hope to see as many of you as possible at the Coffee Morning on the 28th and wish you all the very best.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
In our last article I mentioned kittens, and our recent communications with Dereham Adoption Centre with regard to these. At the time, the Adoption Centre had no kittens available for re-homing so was sending enquiries to us as several new ones had come into care recently. As a consequence, more of our kittens have left for new homes outside our area. As it is now Cats’ Protection policy to pay for the neutering of any kitten which leaves before it is old enough for the operation, it will mean they will need to come back into the area for this to be done, and in some instances also to receive the second vaccination. All the new owners concerned have been only too happy to comply. We use several vets for this purpose, namely Bridge at Wroxham, Westover in North Walsham, Glaven in Holt, Miramar in Sheringham and Bure Valley (Taverham Vets) in Aylsham, with whom we hold accounts. They all understand the importance of getting the kittens neutered at an early age although there are instances when the operation may be deferred by mutual agreement with us. The first three veterinary surgeries named are also used for other veterinary care, a health check when they first come in, giving treatment as and when required, and for vaccinating and micro chipping them all before they leave for their new homes. We have been working with them for the benefit of the cats in our area for over 17 years now and regard them as friends who we can trust.
Brachycephalic Dog Breeds in Hot Weather
Although autumn is upon us and the days are drawing in, there remains the possibility of a few hot spells and with this in mind, I wanted to write about a case I saw during my latest weekend on call.
At the time we were experiencing some very warm weather, but nothing unusual for August. Unfortunately, our furry friends are less well equipped to deal with the heat and certain breeds of dog are especially affected.
On this occasion, it was a 3-year-old French Bulldog who had been struggling with his breathing for a day or two and this had led to him over heating and developing heat stroke. He presented to the practice collapsed, panting heavily and had a temperature of nearly 44C. He was immediately transferred to an oxygen tent, placed on a drip, given medications to reduce the inflammation of his airways and cooled down with wet towels and cold compresses. French Bulldogs are among a number of breeds classed as ‘brachycephalic’, this means they have shortened faces which has led to collapsing airways, excessive soft tissues obstructing their airways and inevitable breathing problems for many individuals. The knock-on effect in hot weather is their
At the time of writing we still have some lovely kittens in care that are all very friendly and have been given lots of love and attention by our volunteers. There are also more in the pipeline from another site on the industrial estate, quite close to the original although, from their description, our friend does not recognise them as being from there. At present the owner of the new site is feeding mum and kittens to get them used to contact with people and, hopefully, by the time the next article is due, they will all be in care and mum neutered and returned to site.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.
inability to cool down properly through panting and the increased risk of heat stroke. It took over four hours for his temperature to drop back to the normal range and he needed to be monitored intensively round the clock to ensure he was breathing properly and regulating his temperature adequately himself. Remarkably, he pulled through and was discharged the following morning unfortunately many dogs with heat stroke are not so lucky. So please remember to avoid walking your dogs in the heat of the day, always ensure they have access to water and don’t leave them in the car if the weather is hot- ‘not long is too long!’. Focus on Family Law
– commentary by Neale Grearson, Family Solicitor at Clapham & Collinge Solicitors
The divorce of Petra Ecclestone and husband Neale Grearson James Stunt is reported to have £5.5 billion at stake following the breakup of their marriage. Miss Ecclestone is the daughter of Bernie Ecclestone the Formula 1 tycoon.
The Judge in the case was reported as urging them to settle their divorce in private as he warned of the potential effect on their children of a public hearing and the need for compromise. Miss Ecclestone was stated to have tried to find a consensual approach to the ending of the marriage but that had been rejected by her husband. Sadly it is often one party who feels that they have tried everything to reach a compromise and it is the other that has not.
What has been suggested by newspapers as the longest divorce battle in Britain has hit the headlines. This relates to what has been quoted as a sixteen year “war” between a former British Airways Captain and his third wife arguing over money since they split in 2001. The Judge dealing with the case said that the length of time “beggars belief”.
The ex-wife told the Court of Appeal Judges that she just wanted the money her family was owed to be able to get on with her life. The ex-husband denied “playing technical games” and insisted that he was simply trying to protect his current (fourth) wife “from the wreckage of the past”!
Whilst this sixteen year divorce “battle” is thankfully a rarity delays are increasing with the Bury St Edmunds Divorce Centre who are
Petra and James had been arguing about whether their relationship had broken down and the Judge said it was a “very sad state of affairs” that the question of whether the relationship had broken down could not be determined between the parties. Miss Ecclestone’s Barrister said “it is more than unfortunate. It is absolutely scandalous. It is completely obvious this marriage has irretrievably broken down. What is going on is no more than a charade”. In the background appears to be the major issue over a Pre-Nuptial Agreement that had been signed but in the absence of any agreement the Judge dealing with the case had no alternative but to set down a framework for a series of hearings to take place.
Could this be the World’s Longest Divorce?
The Beginning of Autumn
I need a warm jacket To walk down the lane, Summer is over, We are threatened with rain. Autumn is anxious to come rolling in, The leaves on the trees Are getting quite thin. An owl on the church wall Blinks wisely at me, Then with a flourish flies into a tree. There are one or two poppies left in the field, The old apple tree has produced a good yield, The blackberries are ripening, I must sample a few, Tomorrow I’ll pick a punnet or two. Every month there is Something new in the lane, It’s a tranquil world Free from stress and strain.
Diane Berthelot
currently working on a delay of twenty-seven working days for dealing with incoming post. At a time when the Courts are making a profit the cynic would question whether this is at the cost of service levels with the pain of centralising work to a Divorce Centre still continuing.
The even bigger shock and concern to the parties involved in the sixteen year divorce battle is likely to be how much it has cost them in legal fees let alone emotional damage.

Weavers Morris
Weavers Morris of North Walsham are looking for new dancers and musicians.
We are a mixed Morris dancing side and meet every Wednesday evening at around 7.30pm at St Nicholas Rooms behind St Nicholas Church in North Walsham. We practice through the winter months and then dance out each week from May through to September at various hostelries to raise money for local charities. In the past we have collected monies for Break, Nelson's Journey, Riding for the Disabled and The Nancy Oldfield Trust to name but a few.
GIFT SHOP AND NEWSAGENTS 40a Market Place, North Walsham

Morris dancing is not as strenuous as you might think but is good exercise for young and old alike and is a very social activity. Look at our videos on our Facebook page Weavers Morris.
Our practice nights start again on Wednesday 4 October so why not come along and see what Morris dancing is all about. Just wear something casual that you are comfortable dancing in. You never know, you might enjoy it!

Holkham Hall for
BRAIN TUMOUR
Hopes of a winning start were dashed going down 37 -24 home to Colchester. They were 24 -20 ahead ten minutes into the second half but the visitors, relegated into London One North in April and expected to be amongst the League's leading teams, then took control.
Their second match was against Saffron Walden, again at home, and they overwhelmed the visitors scoring twelve tries to win 68-0, James Knight (pictured) and Will Hodgson both getting two. There was some really exhilarating attacking play but Head of Rugby, James Brooks, was equally delighted with their defensive work - few teams "nil" their opponents.
