Hospitals Friends launch into future with new blood

A hospital league of friends group has opened a new chapter with a new team at its helm.

A question mark hung over the future of the group at North Walsham since long-serving duo Brian Elliott and Brian Blackburn said it could fold unless new blood came along to run it. But a new Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer have stepped forward and are urging the public to continue their support for the North Walsham War Memorial Hospital League of Friends.

Incoming Chairman Keith Jarvis, from Trunch, worked in the estates section of the health service for 29 years including dealing with North Walsham before retirement. He is also a governor at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and Chairman of North Walsham Rugby club.

He said "The two Brians have done a brilliant job, but the Friends are in good hands and will continue to be a link between the community and the hospital."

Hospitals Friends launch into future with new blood

Continued from front cover... New Secretary is Angela Batson, admissions assistant at Gresham's School, and Treasurer is Carol Willgress, a former catering equipment company office manager - both from Southrepps.

Mr Elliott, who has been chairman for the past 36 years, said it was the end of an era for him and Mr Blackburn, who had served for 31.

"I have been proud of what we have achieved, from providing equipment to helping save the hospital from closure threats - but we could not have done it without the support of the public."

The new-look hospital Friends committee at North Walsham

Mr Blackburn said that over his 31 years, the Friends had spent £714,328 on equipment for patients and staff as well as the new Dewing Suite training centre, but remarkably had never had to seek fund raising. It had all come from public donations, legacies and money in lieu of flowers at funerals.

At the annual meeting on Friday 15 September, which approved the new officers, Friends’ member Margaret Johnson praised the expertise, tenacity and commitment of the two Brians – who she called the “dynamic duo”.

People can support the friends by making donations and through legacies. Contact Mr Jarvis at k.jarvis155@btintenet.com or 07788 889853. Photos: Richard Batson

WARNING

Your local charity has heard from several local residents who have received telephone calls claiming to be from HMRC and warning them they will be charged and taken to court for tax discrepancies.

They are then asked to press 1 on their phone. This is a scam – HMRC DO NOT contact taxpayers in this way so if you receive a call of this nature cut it off and do not respond.

North Walsham Men (and Ladies) in Sheds

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden – a place where they feel at home and pursue practical interests with a high degree of autonomy.

A Men’s Shed offers this to its members who share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A place of leisure where members come together to work.

A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc), bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Reclamation, reuse and restoration will feature strongly – and some say that is true of the members too! Although Sheds mostly attract older men, they welcome men and women of any age as well as young people. Whichever activities are pursued, the essence of a Shed is not a building, which some do not have, but the network of relationships between the members.

is members who want to remain active, appreciate the social side of interacting with other like-minded shedders and gain satisfaction from seeing projects through to completion.

North Walsham is on the verge of creating its own Shed and is now actively looking for members. All are welcome, especially those interested in forming the Shed’s Committee. If you are interested in knowing more about the project the national website is www.menssheds.org.uk. Those interested in forming the Committee or if you would like to put your name down to receive further information as and when the Shed is up and running, please email northwalshamshed@gmail.com

As soon as we have amassed members we will call a meeting to explain how the project will work and to get your ideas on what sorts of scheme’s we will undertake, how many days a week we will be open etc.

Men in Sheds started in Australia but is now taking off around the country and the benefits are undeniable, so why not get involved?

New Arthritis Care Support Group A new Arthritis Care Support Group is starting up in North Walsham on Monday 16 October.

Arthritis Care is 70 years old this year and remains one of the UK’s leading charities, representing and supporting people with any form of arthritis whilst empowering people with this condition through selfmanagement. Figures suggest that Arthritis affects 1 in 10 of the population of the UK, and is one of the main reasons for visits to the GP and for people claiming benefits.

Arthritis Care’s Living Well with Arthritis Service includes local Arthritis Care Community Champions hosting hubs and attending events such as drop-in events in places such as Rheumatology Clinics, Libraries and GP Surgeries. Champions are not medically trained but are able to offer empathy to those affected by arthritis whilst offering peer support.

Arthritis Care believes there is always something people with arthritis can do to make informed choices to improve their daily lives. This improvement could stem from finding out information and gaining knowledge about their arthritis.

Self-management is seen as being very important for people to live well with a long-term health condition such as arthritis. This can include incorporating selfmanagement strategies into everyday life, aspects of which include exercise, healthy eating, pacing and communicating well with healthcare professionals. Self-management does not mean doing it on your own but working together with healthcare professionals and charities such as Arthritis Care. Arthritis Care has a local network of branches and support groups and the North Walsham Branch has been meeting for many years on a monthly basis on

the third Thursday of the month between 2.30pm and 4.30pm at North Walsham Community Centre.

There will be an inaugural meeting of the new North Walsham Arthritis Care Support Group on Monday 16 October from 10.30am until 12.30pm in the Nelson Room at North Walsham Community Centre. This group will offer a friendly setting offering social support and will be for those who wish to talk more about their arthritis, share ideas and tips about selfmanagement and look at subjects such as healthy lifestyles including exercise and healthy eating. Arthritis Care’s range of publications will be available at most meetings. The Group will run depending on what those attending are looking for from a Support Group. This could include guest speakers and arranging workshop sessions. Therefore, if anyone in the area is affected by arthritis and would like to be involved in this new group please feel free to come along on the Monday 16 October.

North Walsham Wings Appeal

Once again, I feel humbled by the kindness and generosity of the people of North Walsham. Although the weather was unpleasant, to say the least, our annual street collection on behalf of the Royal Air Forces Association Wings Appeal raised £180.41. A special thank you must be said to those that, not only donated, but spent a few minutes stood in the rain talking to the collectors - it makes all the difference when stood in the cold and wet when someone shows an interest. Once again, thank you all, those that kindly donated and those who braved the elements to stand there with the collection boxes. Weather with Ned Nimbus

The past three months have continued in a similar vein to April, May and June, when our weather was best described as 'a mixed bag, although overall the balance was in favour of fine weather. From October to December there will be quite an Atlantic influence as the extra moisture pumped out by an active tropical storm season further south, comes up into the North Atlantic. This activity has been pretty subdued for years and so far this year it has taken some time to get anything major going. These storms help high pressure to spread across the UK, so the first part of October at least could see us benefit from this. Thereafter average conditions and temperatures look to hold sway.

Rogues will be Rogues Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr

It is impossible to legislate for human nature. Financial and other abuse of the vulnerable, and even within families, has been everpresent. So what is so remarkable about retired Master of the Court of Protection Denzil Lush’s tirade about how he would never make a Lasting Power of Attorney (‘LPA’)?

He spent his working life seeing the ‘car-crashes’ of the LPA system, but probably had little to do with the happy cases where a timely LPA is a life-saver. Like an A+E doctor saying paracetamol should be totally banned because he’d seen too many cases where an overdose had been taken, misuse of a system by the few shouldn’t remove its availability from the many.

It doesn’t take an LPA for financial abuse to take place. In these days of internet banking, funds can be accessed/transferred and mis-spent without a scrap of paper.

Better that an LPA should be in place with the availability of the safeguards of the Office of the Public Guardian than the only route being that of a full-on, expensive and very slow application to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a Deputy.

My own late grandfather’s informal carer ‘persuaded’ him, when he was at the point of losing mental capacity in his 90s, to write a

cheque so her teenage son could buy a car. The Power of Attorney, by which he appointed me and my brothers, enabled us to have that £9,000 cheque cancelled at the bank. Without it, he would have been defrauded.

The current system could, of course, always be improved. One way would be to require a professional person (medical or legal) to act in the role of Certificate Provider at the point when the LPA is made.

Contrasting the LPA with Mr Lush’s expressed preference for the Deputyship route shows why the LPA is best in most cases. It can take 12 months for the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy, during which time their finances are frozen, things can get into a real muddle and even the care fees cannot be paid. Sadly, often the person dies before the Deputy is appointed.

Having more than one attorney appointed by your LPA enables them to keep an eye on each other. It is possible to require your attorneys to produce annual accounts to show where the money is going. There can be a restriction so as to place a cap on the amount that a single attorney can withdraw. Ensuring proper thought is better than avoiding an LPA altogether, as this may compound the problem.

A report last year from Action on Elder Abuse warned on the importance of specialist legal

advice. Look for a solicitor who is a member of Solicitors for the Elderly www.sfe.legal who will act as a safeguard against fraud and coercion.

Given the current levels of confusing and conflicting messages about making an LPA, Hayes + Storr have created an ‘easy to understand’ information guide on what the process involves and why it can be necessary. Call in to your nearest branch for a free copy.

October at the Museum of the Broads Our season is coming to a close at the end of October but that doesn't mean that things are winding down in Stalham!

Half term, Monday 23 – Friday 29 October, sees our very popular Hallowe’en trail with Broads related spooky goings on. A great event for the family and for our volunteers who love decorating the exhibits! Don't miss our Broadland in Pictures exhibition October is your very last chance to see this special collection of paintings, photographs, sculpture, brochures, and holiday souvenirs through the years.

Falcon, our steam boat, will be running up to the end of the season, Tuesday to Thursday each week and daily during half term week. It's such a unique trip and loads of wildlife to see along the way.

Finally, we are always looking for volunteers for now and for the new season in 2018. There are a variety of different roles - check out our website. Being a volunteer is a great addition to a CV, it gives the opportunity to learn something new and meet a great bunch of people. It comes highly recommended! North Walsham 2018 Calendar Launch

Bob and Jan White of Showcase Gallery are launching a new calendar for 2018 showing buildings and scenes, which play a significant role in the town, but are often overlooked. The calendar was conceived earlier this year when Bob was approached by photographer Paul Macro whose photographs feature in the calendar.

The launch was attended by representatives from the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust whose recent improvement work on the canal, included in the calendar, is encouraging local people to use the canal and helping to improve wildlife habitat. Reverend Paul Cubitt also attended and would like the July picture of St. Nicholas Church to encourage the church to be considered as a perfect wedding venue. Bob and Jan hope that the calendar will build year on year and continue to promote the town and its treasures.

Calendars are available from Showcase Gallery priced £6.50.

Golden leaves float before me And crackle under my feet Autumn in all its glory A magical scene you just cannot beat Winter is on the doorstep When cold north winds will blow So today is very precious As I embrace the sun’s warm glow There’s a rustle in the undergrowth A deer shows her gentle face Two squirrels rush round me Enjoying a chase I’m reluctant to leave this peace But can’t continue to roam The sun is going down now And I must make for home. The Walsham Writers group, who meet on the first Thursday of every month to share the fruits of their creativity with one another, have notched up another success.

Two members of the group were shortlisted in sections of the National Association of Writer’s Groups’ annual new writing competition.

Elizabeth Agar was shortlisted in the Formal Poem category, and Bob Bishop in both the Comedy Writing and Ghost Story sections.

Bob, who had previously won the Alan Ayckbourn playwriting trophy in 2013, was selected as this year’s winner of the Aine Maire Chadwick Trophy for his ghost story, Two Children. He is pictured receiving his award from Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes at a Gala Awards Ceremony held at The University of Warwick earlier this month.

The Walsham Writers meet monthly in the committee room of the North Walsham Sports Hall, from 7pm – 9pm.

North Walsham Christmas Lights

The shops are starting to get all the Christmas goods in and North Walsham Christmas Lights are no different.

Plans are well in advance for the lights to start being erected at the beginning of October. Although this will be the second time that they have been moved this year, due to the group relocating, separating from the Town Council and joining forces with the Funday Committee to form Walsham Community Events.

Special thanks goes to Michael Drury (Drurys) and Richard Harris for assisting in finding us a storage site.

Following the site being found, a shipping container was purchased and the task of moving all the lights commenced, assisted by a van kindly donated to us by Trevor Charles.

So, this year has seen some major expense, but we are pleased to confirm that the lights will once again be erected around the town, ready for the grand switch on Saturday 25 November.

You may well think why on earth are the lights going up in October? The answer is due to the lack of volunteers - the town’s lights are erected and maintained by a team of around ten.

If you have any time spare on Sunday mornings from 15 October, please contact the Chairman by text on 07748 030937 or email jeabol@aol.com.

We are also currently seeking stalls who would like to attend the switch on. To book a stall contact Andrea at nwchristmaslights@gmail.com &RQVHUYDWRU\ WRR KRW LQ VXPPHU WRR 7UDQVIRUP LW LQWR DQ H[WHQVLRQ ZLWK R /X[XU\ /LYLQJ 6SDFHV

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Dennis swaps slippers for steel-capped boots What has Norfolk’s Dennis Williams got in common with the Queen and the Pope?

They all put in a full day’s graft at an age when most of us are pulling on our slippers and puffing on our pipes. Now aged 85, Dennis is a hard-working and very valued member of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust’s regular volunteer work parties.

When he isn’t filling the cement mixer with shovels of sand, Dennis, from Blofield, is sawing up trees, clearing choking vegetation and burning it on bonfires, alongside other volunteers working to restore the 19th-century waterway, Norfolk’s only sailing canal with locks. Dennis began volunteering with the Trust three years ago, following the death of his wife. “I suddenly found myself on my own and I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I found out about the Trust on the internet and got in touch. I enjoy it - you have a good laugh. It’s physical work and it keeps you active.”

Work parties usually meet once a month on a Sunday, from 9.30am to about 4pm. Men, women and teenagers, with or without skills, are welcome. The Trust is working to improve the neglected Canal, once nearly nine miles long, and over the past 17 years, volunteers have helped the Old Canal Company, which owns part of the waterway, to restore structures which will bring 2.5 miles of the upper canal back into full navigable use. The Trust staged two open days as part of September's national Heritage Open Days. Visitors were able to watch Dennis and his fellow volunteers at work, restoring the spillway - overflow - at Ebridge.

Before retirement, Dennis worked for Shell, as a certification engineer on gas platforms. His working career took him all over the world, including the Falkland Islands, Brazil and Italy.

Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich pledge to continue listening as consultation confirms support for merger Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich have published a summary of the public consultation on the Colleges’ proposed merger, together with their responses to key themes that have emerged through the consultation process.

Leaders of the two Colleges are pleased with the overall positive response to the consultation, which saw more than half in support of the merger, whilst welcoming the opportunity to provide clarification and further detail on key aspects of the plans.

Response : Majority support for merger. There was overall support for the merger among the 159 responses to the public consultation, with 51% in favour of the merger and 43% against the proposal. This is a recognition that together the two Colleges could create a larger, more resilient organisation, safeguarding A-Level provision and increasing vocational and adult education provision in North East Norfolk. Consultation : “It is important that we continue to listen”

In a joint Foreword to the Response to the Public Consultation, Matt Colmer (Chair of City College Norwich Corporation) and Nicola Lucking (Chair of Paston Sixth Form College Corporation) write:

“We have listened to the positive, negative and neutral comments and all the advice given, which will help to shape our future plans for the merger and the new institution going forward. It is important that we continue to listen to your views and both Principals will therefore make themselves available to meet stakeholders and members of the public who wish to talk through our merger proposals.”

Identity and reputation : Paston name and heritage to be retained

The document confirms the intention to retain the Paston name, after the

consultation found that a clear majority of respondents favoured the name “Paston College”. Furthermore, the Paston College Foundation will “retain a strong association with the merged College as Landlord of part of the Paston site” and will “work closely with the new combined institution to preserve the strong heritage, identity and reputation of Paston”.

Student travel : Positive impact on travel to learn patterns

In relation to the impact on students, the Colleges say that an increased vocational offer in North East Norfolk “is likely to impact positively on the ‘travel to learn’ patterns for students.”

Both institutions understand that “it is not in the interests of the College and the students to spend time travelling at the expense of valuable study time.” Therefore, students enrolling at Paston or City College Norwich will remain at their chosen site. Additional travel between sites will only be required where agreed in advance.

Other key themes covered in the Response document relate to: the impact on the future of academic and vocational provision; leadership and management at Paston; the impact on staff; and the impact on the North Walsham economy

Next steps : Subject to the completion of legal and financial due diligence, the aim is to complete the merger on Friday 1st December 2017. The final decision on whether the merger will go ahead rests with the governing bodies of both Colleges.

During this process, the leaders of Paston Sixth Form College and City College Norwich are still committed to listening to views from those in the local community and have therefore made themselves available for discussions. Full details of dates and times can be found at www.pastonccn.co.uk

Kevin Grieve, Principal, Paston Sixth Form College, commented: “We are pleased with the results of the public consultation and would like to thank everyone who took part. This is all about meeting needs of the North East Norfolk community by providing an improved offer that is sustainable. By becoming one institution, we can work together to become an even stronger educational force than we currently are. We have a proud history and we are determined to build on this history by joining with City College Norwich to meet local needs in North East Norfolk.”

Corrienne Peasgood, Principal, City College Norwich, said: “Both institutions have a strong history and it is our aim to maintain, develop and celebrate their individual strengths and specialisms following the merger. After completion, we strongly believe the wider choice of courses and increased progression routes available will provide even more opportunities for young people to achieve their individual aspirations in North East Norfolk.”

About 850 North Norfolk businesses to benefit from more than their bills following rate revaluations earlier will be better off thanks to Pub Relief. £1m in rate relief this year. The decision by the District Council

Lower bills will be sent out automatically over the next few weeks.

About 850 businesses across North Norfolk are in line to benefit from rate relief of more than £1m over the next five years thanks to the introduction of three schemes.

Businesses that have seen their rates go up following recent revaluations, as well as pubs, are amongst the beneficiaries of the schemes, which have been given the green light by North Norfolk District Council. The money has come from central government but it is down to local authorities to draw up plans to distribute the funds.

The largest chunk of money will come in the form of the Local Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme. This fund – worth more than £900,000 in North Norfolk – is designed to help businesses that received steep rises in 16

means about 700 businesses should be receiving new, lower bills under this scheme alone, highlighting that North Norfolk is a better place to do business.

The bulk of this cash – more than £500,000 – will be distributed this year, with a tapering effect over the next few years. The vast majority of the beneficiaries of this relief will see their rate increases cut by between 25% and 50% this year.

Supporting Small Businesses Relief is also aimed at helping businesses that were hit by the recent change in rateable values. It is specifically targeted at businesses that saw the loss of Small Business Rates Relief or Rural Rate Relief as a result of the revaluation process.

Meanwhile, it is thought that about 80 pubs

Businesses that are due to benefit from these rate reliefs will be contacted automatically and sent amended bills over the next few weeks.

Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits, said “It is great news that about 700 businesses will benefit from the Local Discretionary Revaluation Relief scheme, with others benefiting from the two other reliefs.”

“We have acted promptly to find the best way to distribute this money, and businesses across the district should be receiving their amended bills soon.”

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is a great place to do business, and the fact that so many of our businesses will see a large reduction in their rate increases this year can only help the wider local economy.”

Upcycle ideas in North Walsham Happisburgh Lifeboat Station A new retail idea has moved into North Walsham.

Having seen on TV how many and varied objects can be upcycled into unusual and interesting lighting, local artist and musician Barry Holden, being a guitarist himself, started with two guitars and a violin and progressed towards designing household items and engineering/steampunk creations.

His artwork is on show at The Music Hut in the town. They kindly agreed to display the lights in their shop window, creating a splash of light in the evening, having already asked Barry if he could upcycle their own personal items.

More of Barry’s items can be viewed on his Facebook page ‘Evolution Upcycle’

Salvation Army Anniversary Celebrations

The Salvation Army North Walsham welcomes former Captain Jane Ward but now Church of England vicar Rev Jane Morris to lead its 132nd Anniversary Celebrations on 14 and 15 October at its Hall Lane base.

Jane was stationed at the Corps in the mid 1990s and has fond memories of her time there. She is looking forward to coming back.

As part of the celebrations, there is a Singing Company reunion on Saturday 14 October with rehearsals in the afternoon learning the songs which the then children would have sung. The Singing Company reunion will take part in an evening celebration at 7pm to which all are invited and at which the community band will also be taking part.

PART TIME VACANCY for a person to do counter work, restaurant service, food preparation and cleaning for 16 to 25 Hours a week. Some experience of serving the public would be an asset.

Happisburgh RNLI volunteers were on their normal Tuesday evening training last month when the station received a call from the UK Coastguard at 8pm to task the Station’s Atlantic Howard Bell to search between Cart Gap to Horsey, as they had reports of a powered hang glider ditching into the sea around Winterton. Helm was Christian Larter and crew Charlotte Siely, Sam Gillard and David Loveday. At 8.30pm, the Coastguard tasked the Station’s D Class Spirit of Berkhamsted with Helm Tim Grimmer crew Martin Gibbs and Sean Thurston to join Howard Bell with the search. Also involved were Sea Palling and Hemsby lifeboats and the coastguard helicopter.

By 10.30pm, the Spirit of Berkhamsted was forced to return to station due to the worsening sea conditions, along with Sea Palling and Hemsby lifeboats, Howard Bell and the helicopter carried on until 11.30pm when the Coastguard stood everybody down, Howard Bell returned to station by midnight. This was a genuine call out with good intent, any one seeing any at sea should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Anyone who used to be in the Singing Company are welcome to come along in the afternoon as well.

On Sunday 15 October, Rev Jane will be leading the morning worship at 10am and a special praise meeting at 4pm.

All are welcome to come and share throughout the weekend.

Trio of County medals for North Walsham Gymnasts

On Sunday 10 September, ten competitive gymnasts aged between 8-16 years old from North Walsham Gymnastics Club took part in the Norfolk County voluntary levels at the UEA in Norwich.

The Club won a full set of medals with a gold for Lola Gillett aged 8, silver for Olivia Shingles age 11 and bronze for Amy Mann age 16. All will be going to Ipswich later in October to compete in the regional finals.

Further county medal hopes for the Club will also be with another nine gymnasts competing in level 7 in early October.

“I am so proud of all the girls,” said head

coach Alexis Thurston, “they have all trained so hard and it is great to see them represent the Club at county level and progress to the regional finals”.

During September the Club moved into their own purpose built facility on the industrial estate in North Walsham, after a lot of hard work and fundraising their long term dream finally became reality. Alexis said, “It is amazing to finally have our own gym and in such a short space of time you can already see the benefits to the coaches and gymnasts”.

The Club has contacted over 200 future gymnasts on the waiting list and is also running

Ahead of their game at Fullerians (Watford) on 30 September, the Vikings were seventh in London One North. Their two fixtures since the previous article yielded one win, 62 -14 home to Ruislip in what was an astonishing match. At half time the Vikings were 19 -14 down, only to then completely overwhelm their opponents with a wonderful display of incisive running rugby, scoring eight unanswered second half tries including two each for Josh Brown, Dan Smith and Chalk Hill Brewery Player of the Month James Riley (pictured).

A week earlier the Vikings themselves suffering a heavy defeat at Chingford going down 43 -15 - 30 points behind at the break, they put in a much better second half performance. Chingford were second last season and many observers favourites for promotion.

The Raiders got their League season off to a good start with wins over Swaffham and Beccles.

pre-school, adult classes and much more. There will be an official opening before the end of the year where non members can come along and try the new facilities.

There have been plenty of new starters amongst the Youth and Minis who play on Sunday mornings with teams from under 6 to under 18. Newcomers are very welcome never too late to join! For more information contact Kim Hooker kmhooker9@gmail.com. The Youth teams will shortly be beginning their programme of fixtures around Norfolk and Suffolk, whilst the Minis will be participating in three Festivals in October.

The Vikings are home to Amersham & Chiltern on 7 October before visiting South Woodham Ferrers two weeks later. They have no fixture on the 14th, though there will be rugby at Scottow, the Raiders playing Norwich Medics.

'North Norfolk Mammals' talk with Francis Farrow 26 October 7.30pm – 9.30pm This talk will look at the mammals of Norfolk, in particular those species found in north Norfolk during the 21st century. North Norfolk has a diverse number of habitats that are fully exploited by mammals and, although many mammals are secretive, they often leave tell-tale signs or tracks; the talk will include some insights into this fascinating aspect. Francis Farrow has held a passionate life-long interest in the natural world. He is presently the honorary warden of Beeston Common SSSI/SAC and has been the county’s Mammal Recorder for the last five years. Venue is Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.

Leg Veins : Unsightly leg veins can be a problem for millions of men and women, the world over. It is estimated that in many areas, over 60 percent of the adult population suffers from varicose veins, thread veins or spider veins. Sometimes thread and spider veins are like the tip of an iceberg, but they can occur in absence of underlying problems. Often people who have had surgery for varicose veins are left with thread and spider veins and these can be treated very well too. Contrary to popular belief these tiny veins can cause symptoms and can be more difficult to treat then the larger veins.

For thread and spider veins sclerotherapy is usually undertaken- micro injections of medication into veins are performed. These destroy the vein lining and veins are subsequently slowly absorbed by the body. Anywhere between 50-80% of injected veins respond and further injections in the same area can be carried out 4-6 weeks later. Treated veins appear worse before they disintegrate and disappear. Sclerotherapy is considered ‘gold-standard’ treatment for thread and spider veins.

Lasers are also available and can be used in combination with sclerotherapy. We have

A medical history and clinical examination is undertaken. If this indicates problems with underlying venous valves and varicose veins then these have to be treated before addressing thread and spider veins. An ultrasound vein scan is ideal but not mandatory in every case.

Higher energies and deeper penetration are required which means that laser treatment can sometimes be painful. With careful patient selection these treatments can provide excellent outcomes as shown here.

Varicose Veins : Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.

More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface. The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem. Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of a laser fiber directly into the diseased vein using ultrasound guidance. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

So if you are bothered by painful, achy, unsightly and nuisance veins anywhere on your face or body, please do come and see us to see what we can do for you. Call 0800 0430737 or log on to www.veintreatments.org.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As most people are now aware, we offer help with cat neutering for people on low income or benefits. Irene deals with the initial enquiries on our special neutering line, which is listed below, and confirms whether or not they are eligible for one of these vouchers or, if not, offers a fixed price voucher depending on the sex of the cat/kitten. If the owner wants to take up the offer they send details of the cat, their address and telephone number and the payment to me to deal with. I then share this information with the vets, issue the voucher to them and advise the owner they can book their cat in for the operation. We always advise the owner that the information is not used for any other purpose and is not shared with any other organisations.

People are not always aware that their cat can become pregnant while still feeding an existing litter and it has been known for a cat to become pregnant again soon after giving birth. One worried owner recently contacted us because she had taken in a stray that had a litter of four kittens. She had found homes for two but decided to keep their litter mates. The mother had recently had another litter (this time of eight kittens) so she was desperate to get the first kittens neutered as the female could also become pregnant, possibly by her brother. She will also get the mother neutered as soon as the kittens are feeding independently to avoid a further litter. Not much of a life for the poor little mum and also the possibility of interbreeding which could mean unhealthy kittens.

We often get calls from people who have found an injured or ill cat, asking for advice. Because we do not have the skills and knowledge that our vets are able to give, we always ask the caller to contact their local vets for help. We will also suggest they check with their neighbours in case it is their pet. In the past we have had instances where people have contacted us, and the cat in question was owned by a neighbour and, although the cat seemed in poor health, it was already receiving veterinary care. If an owner cannot be found, help can sometimes be obtained from the RSPCA for treatment. However, the person concerned would need to contact the RSPCA first to obtain a special number to give to the vets.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please

Rotary Helps Disaster Victims

North Walsham Rotary Club held a collection on Thursday 21 September in North Walsham to aid those affected by Hurricane Irma.

Club President, Paul Ryall, said "The sum collected was £343 collected and we are grateful to the people of our town for their generous support."

The Club will augment this so as to provide a ‘shelter-box’, including a tent, in addition to the 10 water survival boxes already funded.

Disaster resources such as these are funded from contributions from Rotary Clubs across East Anglia, and are also currently being dispatched to help the victims of the South Asia Floods, and the Mexican earthquake.

Autumn is here

The sun filters through the trees And dances along my path, My dog has found an old brown boot, His antics make me laugh. Autumn has come early To our favourite lane With several days of heat We shall be wanting it to rain. I’m going to get my paint box out, And paint the colours seen, Glorious browns and yellows Not forgetting shades of green.

North Walsham Table Tennis

Aylsham Conquer NWSCF in First Round of Doubles Cup

The new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League has kicked off with an increase in teams to a total of 29.

Although there have been several changes in terms of who is playing where, all six North Walsham teams have returned – NWSCA and NWSCB will play in the Premier Division, NWSCD have been relegated to the First Division which also features NWSCC and NWSCE while NWSCF will again be playing in the Second Division.

NWSCB’s Richard Westgate, Werner Zivna and Dennis Elliott hosted Crosscourts’ Rod Goffin, John Welsh and Anne Armitage. Westgate and Zivna won the third battle against Goffin and Welsh 6-11, 16-14, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7 as NWSCB won 7-1 with the same Cromer pairing winning a dead rubber in four against Zivna and Elliott.

NWSCE’s Andrew Weston and James and Ben Lester hosted Mundesley A. The visiting trio of Simon Halliday, Peter Betts and Paul Price won 6-0 with Halliday and Betts taken the distance by the Lesters. Elsewhere NWSCD won 5-0 away to LCC Seals and NWSCA won a derby 6-0 against NWSCC.

As traditional the first fortnight was devoted to Cup matches and the opening week of the season saw the first round of the Knockout Doubles Cup completed.

Three ties took place on the same night at North Walsham Sports Centre with NWCF’s Edna Stone, Sarah Tudhope and Gudrun Scham hosting Aylsham Conqueror’s Dave Johns, Ashley Marsh and Roger Crouch.

With the opener going to the visitors in straight, Marsh and Crouch won the first two sets of the second 11-7, 11-3.

Scham and Stone hit back to take the third 12-10 and the fourth 11-8, but Conquerors won the decider 11-9.

The same North Walsham pairing also took a set from Johns and Crouch before the Aylsham side took an unassailable 5-0 lead.

Tudhope and Scham won one of the dead rubbers played in five against Marsh and Crouch but the night ended with a 6-1 win
